Call to open Whitten Oval Maribyrnong residents are calling on the Western Bulldogs to open Whitten Oval to the public for exercising and dog walking during the coronavirus lockdown. Footscray resident Deb Bain-King said many people in the area had used the oval for walking, running and dog walking, and the community need now was greater than ever. “It’s so important to so many people’s health and it is a community-owned asset,” she said. “They’re really big on their community outreach and their place within the community, I think if we could work out something … that would really prove how their hearts are in the right place.” Ms Bain-King has contacted the Bulldogs but in a written response was told the oval couldn’t be opened to the public “to protect the oval and stands while there is no one at Whitten Oval due to the shutdown”. Maribyrnong council’s planning services director Nigel Higgins said it was up to the Bulldogs’ discretion. He said other open spaces and dog off-lead areas in Maribyrnong remained open. Rates rise slammed By Goya Dmytryshchak Hobsons Bay council has deferred its annual drat budget amid an outcry over a proposed 2 per cent rates rise as households battle coronavirus hardship. Cr Tony Brifa, who did not attend last week’s budget meeting because of health risks associated with COVID-19, took to social media to express outrage at plans to increase rates when “unemployment is around 10 per cent and the country is about to experience the greatest recession in generations”.

he council agenda, released before the meeting, stated: “Rapid and unprecedented changes resulting from the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic have been seen around the world. Council proposes to increase its general rates by 2 per cent, in accordance with the Victorian Government rate cap legislation.” he 2020-21 budet is premised on an operational surplus of $26.454 million. Cr Brifa said the council had time to revise the “disturbing and irresponsible” budget. “I do not accept that there has not been suicient time to review the proposed budget,”

Cr Brifa said. “he Federal government has had suicient time to close our borders … and to introduce many measures including the $130 billion JobKeeper program.” At the meeting, attended by Mayor Colleen Gates and councillors Peter Hemphill, Sandra Wilson and Jonathon Marsden, an alternative motion to defer and revise the drat budget by August 31 was approved unanimously. Cr Hemphill moved that council, “due to current uncertainty attributed to the COVID-19 outbreak, delays the exhibition of any drat budget for 2020-21 and use the

additional time provided by the Victorian government to analyse and further revise the drat budget.” Cr Sandra Wilson said had council known the government would grant an extension of time “before our agenda had gone to print, I think that we would have had a very diferent recommendation before us.” Cr Jonathon Marsden said “We know that, … a number of households are experiencing hardship … any revised budget or revised hardship policy ought to take that into account.”

Meals on wheels kitchen ‘bailed out’ by state Altona’s meals-on-wheels kitchen serving more than 20 Victorian councils could be bought out by the state government due to multimillion dollar debt. Community Chef was started in 2010 and has 16 council shareholders, including Brimbank, Hobsons Bay, Hume, Melton and Wyndham. he state government is remaining tight-lipped about its reported plans to buy the council-owned business for a “peppercorn” price to bail it out of more than $7 million debt. Participating councils took out a loan and secured state and federal funding to establish

the $24 million kitchen. Community Chef soon moved beyond cooking meals for metropolitan councils to supplying aged care homes and hospitals. It also supplies NDIS clients and last year won the contract to cater for the Joan Kirner Women’s and Children’s public hospital. A state government spokesperson on Wednesday would only give a one-line statement about reported plans to buy out Community Chef. “he Department of Health and Human Services is examining a range of ways to boost

capacity in our hospitals – including ensuring appropriate meal services are available,” the spokesperson said. Community Chef chief executive Joe Ciccarone declined to comment on the proposed sale. Opposition health spokeswoman Georgie Crozier has called for a parliamentary inquiry into the proposed sale. “he Andrews government has many questions to answer including plans to buy Community Chef for the reported peppercorn amount of just $1,” she said.

Maribyrnong council’s community services director Clem Gillings said its contract with Community Chef expires this year. “Whilst we contract the provision of meals from Community Chef, Maribyrnong City Council is not a shareholder in the business. “Our delivered meals service remains operational, and the changes to Community Chef should not impact the provision of meals for our clients.” Hobsons Bay council was contacted.

Pet registrations waived By Goya Dmytryshchak Pet owners in Maribyrnong won’t have to pay cat and dog registrations for the next year because of hardship caused by COVID-19. Maribyrnong council has waived pet registrations that were due by April 10, and will refund fees already paid on request. here are currently 6582 dogs and 3047 cats registered in the municipality. Standard fees for desexed dogs and cats would normally be $55, with some animal categories costing as much as $210. “Our furry friends are there to keep us company during these times of physical distancing,” mayor Sarah Carter said. “hey are our companions on walks and while we are at home. “In response to the hardship felt by many as a result of COVID-19, we will refund any 2020-21 pet registrations which have been processed and paid for. “Residents just need to visit our website to apply for the refund. “We ask the community to please be patient as we process the refunds as there are a high number of pet owners in the municipality.” Pet registrations from last year will be automatically renewed free of charge for the period up to April 10 next year. he council is asking people whose details have changed to notify the council so it can update its records. All new registrations, which are required for cats and dogs aged more than three months, will be free this year. Dozens caught louting lockdown rules Six people playing tennis on a closed public court in Maribyrnong have been caught by police for breaching coronavirus restrictions. Police issued 52 ines in a 24-hour period on April 14 as part of Operation Sentinel. Ten youths at a Dandenong skate park and eight youths gathered at a closed school were also caught, while oicers detected multiple private gatherings at residential properties. Police conducted 824 spot checks at homes, businesses and non-essential services across Victoria in the 24 hours. On-the-spot ines of $1652 for individuals and $9913 for businesses may apply for those ignoring lockdown rules. It comes a day ater Deputy Commissioner Shane Patton said he would personally review all the infringement notices issued in the state to date. “Every infringement that had been issued will be reviewed by the superintendent that’s in charge of the operation,” he said. “I will review every one of those personally to ensure they have been appropriately issued and that common sense is being applied.” He said on April 14 that “hundreds and hundreds” of warnings and cautions were being given out daily. Social distancing measures may have put an end to Max’s dreams of a Harry Potter-themed ith birthday party, but there was still plenty of magic in the air thanks to the Footscray ire brigade. Max’s mother Susie Kelly said months of planning had gone into the Harry Potter birthday, only for the coronavirus pandemic to scuttle the day. With traditional birthday parties now impossible, she was trying to think of ways she could still do something special for Max. “A friend of mine sent a link to a Facebook post where someone did a drive past birthday, so I put a little message out to see if anyone was free who could do that,” she said. “I also put a little note through the ire station

Bid to bin fortnight cycle By Goya Dmytryshchak A petition containing 1120 signatures is calling for the reinstatement of a weekly garbage collection in Hobsons Bay. It comes as the council declares it sought medical advice on whether current fortnightly collections pose a coronavirus risk. In February, the council cut garbage collections from weekly to fortnightly under a new four-bin recycling system. he petition states: “We believe the removal of the weekly general rubbish waste collection is both inadequate and unsatisfactory, and should not have been done without widespread community consultation and engagement”. Lead petitioner and Hobsons Bay Talking Garbage group founder, Amanda Hill said residents understood the need to reduce the amount of waste going to landill and were not against the introduction of bins for green waste and glass. However, she said residents were concerned about overlowing garbage bins and hygiene. “I’d prefer to put out my 120-litre bin with two bags of rubbish in it a week than my 120-litre bin overlowing every fortnight,” Ms Hill said. She said that with the existing yellow recycling bins not taking plastic codes 3-7 and UHT/Tetra-Paks, more items were going in the garbage bins. he petition was tabled at last week’s council meeting, at which councillor Sandra Wilson asked sustainable communities director Penelope Winslade if the council had “received any advice around hygiene issues relating to rubbish and the fortnightly collection and particularly in light of the pandemic situation that we are in”. Ms Winslade replied that the council had

At the start of April, the council introduced an interim rubbish drop-of service for residents at its operations centre on Saturdays “to support households that may generate higher volumes of household waste due to working from home or self isolating”. A council spokesperson said advice from the state government, and the Chief Medical Oicer has conirmed, that council waste drop-ofs (including the interim drop-of) are deemed an essential service in the state of emergency.

Rubbish pick up questioned hree Hobsons Bay councillors have publicly expressed concerns about cutting the municipality’s garbage collection to a fortnightly service. It comes as a petition signed by 1120 people calls for the reinstatement of a weekly collection. Cr Peter Hemphill told last week’s council meeting the system was being reviewed. “I’ve made it clear from the start that I’m not quite sure whether we got the general waste collection right,” he said. “But until you have a few months of the collection, it’s hard to work out whether we did get it right or whether it needs further tweaking.” Cr Jonathon Marsden said the council’s decision not to accept plastic codes 3-7 in the recycling bins, and resident’s coninement to their households due to the coronavirus pandemic, had resulted in fuller garbage bins. “I hope as a result of this petition we look closely at accelerating the rollout of larger bins for those households that need it.” Cr Tony Brifa, who did not attend the meeting due to health risks associated with COVID-19, said the council should increase the capacity of the general waste collection. “Given the feedback … I do not believe the standard general waste collection service is enough.” he council will consider a report on the petition at a future meeting. By Goya Dmytryshchak A global pandemic and social distancing rules didn’t stop a man popping the question in a public proposal at Williamstown’s Commonwealth Reserve. Sunbury’s Julia Gammon and Jason Dunn got engaged on a white jumping castle emblazoned with the words, ‘Will you marry me Julia?’ Mr Dunn said when he planned the proposal to his partner of just over two years, there was no way he could have forecast the emergence of a coronavirus.

But nothing could get in the way of love. “I had it set up for a while knowing the long weekend would be the ideal time – not to know that the COVID restrictions would come into play,” Mr Dunn said. “I decided to push ahead with the proposal anyway and decided on a bike ride from Brimbank Park to Williamstown. “On Google Maps, it said it would only be an hour ride. “With the weather not being the best and the trip turning into a longer than expected one – 35 kilometres and closer to an hour and a half – it was hard to convince Julia to go to

Williamstown as it was a fair bit more of a ride. Luckily we got there in the end.” As they approached the castle in the park, Julia’s reluctance turned to joy. “It was very unexpected for Julia,” Mr Dunn said. “She was very emotional and taken aback by it all. Just glad I could get down on one knee and get the right answer. “We have been very overwhelmed by all the love and support from our family and friends but also the strangers in the park at the time of the proposal. “It was very nice to put a smile on peoples faces during an isolated time for many.”

A $1.4 million playground upgrade and landscaping works will be undertaken at Newport’s Paine Reserve. Hobsons Bay council last week awarded a contract to Ace Landscaping Services for works, using funds from the annual capital works budget for over two years. Situated close to Newport Community Hub and library, the train station, cafes and shops, the park is used for many outdoor events and provides a thoroughfare through the area. Councillor Jonathon Marsden told last week’s council meeting that works would include new play equipment, furniture and structures, footpaths and lighting. “It’s a key part of Newport – it’s really the heart of Newport in so many ways,” he said. “But because of … the general design of the park having been let until all the other bits were in place, there’s plenty of potential for helping people move around Newport, particularly the community hub and he Substation, which is currently not an inviting or ideal place to walk. “It’s got a lot of potential to be revitalised and made into an area that people want to dwell in. Local Roads report which pointed to feedback suggesting that three in four residents felt unsafe walking or cycling in local streets because of the speed of cars. he council also cited a recent study by the Curtin-Monash Accident Research Centre,

which found that by reducing speed from 50km/h to 40km/h the chance of fatal injury for pedestrians and cyclists fell from 80 per cent to 26 per cent. Speed limits will remain unchanged on major VicRoads’ arterials, including Ballarat, Geelong, Somerville and Williamstown roads. Existing limits will also remain in Buckley, Francis, Gordon, Hopkins, Moore, Napier and Whitehall streets. Works are expected to take up to eight weeks.

Confusion has reigned over whether it is permissible to use Altona and Williamstown beaches for activities such as windsuring and stand up paddleboarding (SUP) under the state’s stage three restrictions. A Department of Health and Human Services spokesperson this week conirmed they are allowed. “he Victorian Chief Health Oicer has provided advice that canoeing, kayaking, stand up paddleboarding, rowing and surf skiing are permitted as long as physical distancing is complied with and people don’t travel large distances to do them,” the spokesperson said. Windsuring Victoria posted in a statement that members of the community were required to self manage efectively. “Stay in closer to shore and sail only in conditions that are self rescue [ie. no extreme or ofshore winds],” it said. “No heroics please. Victoria’s state of emergency has been extended to May 11 to help continue to contain the spread of COVID-19. At Altona North, Dr Mukesh Haikerwal and partners run the Blackshaws Road pop-up clinic which was assembled from portables and tents over 10 days. Dr Haikerwal said the respiratory clinic enabled treatment of multiple patients with breathing conditions, including COVID-19, who were unable to be seen in a normal GP practice. Tests can be conducted without a change of personal protective gowns and masks, or shutting down and deep cleaning rooms between patients. he clinic had been the irst in Victoria to start swabbing people for coronavirus in the carpark until it ran out of gear. “here were no masks and then there were no gowns and then there were no swabs, so we had to do something diferent,” Dr Haikerwal said. “What we are doing now is … 50 or 60 tests

coping mechanisms of households. Dr Settle said the pandemic had laid bare the vulnerabilities that have been building up on the balance sheets of Australian households over the past two decades. “At issue is high levels of debt, stagnating wages and job insecurity. But on top of this

costs have been steadily rising over the last two decades in categories like health, education, and housing, as well as power and insurance,” she said. “With the COVID-19 pandemic, a huge number of Australian households are taking a hit on their incomes and, as a result, are running into really signiicant trouble keeping up with basic due payments. “his is especially so for casuals, freelancers and small businesses but is a problem for a really diverse set of households, right up and down the income spectrum.” Dr Settle said the study sought to understand

how households are coping with economic pressure and better understand how economic insecurity can be addressed. Participants are asked to take part in a fortnightly phone interview about their household income and expenditure for eight to 10 months. Interviews are conidential and participants can withdraw at any time. Participants will be reimbursed for their time with a $30 gitcard at the end of each interview. VU employee jailed A Victoria University employee has been sentenced to prison following an investigation by the Independent Broad-based Anti-corruption Commission (IBAC) into the misappropriation of more than half a million dollars of university funds. Kamaljeet Kaur Gill was sentenced to three years and six months jail on March 27 ater pleading guilty at the Melbourne County Court to misconduct in public oice and obtaining property by deception and thet. he court heard that Gill had fraudulently obtained almost 200 EFTPOS git cards to the value of $614,261.50 using Victoria University funds ater submitting falsiied invoices via a university procurement system. A further 102 Coles Myer git cards belonging to Victoria University, with a value of $36,650.00, were also stolen by Gill, who was employed in an administrative position at the time. A Tarneit mother has called for more testing of the 5G network to be done before it is rolled out across more of the state. 5G, the term used to describe the next-generation of mobile network technology, is available to some Telstra customers in 32 cities and regional areas across Australia. Optus has also made the network available in some suburbs, including Hoppers Crossing, Laverton and Williams Landing. Across the globe, there have been concerns about the potential health impacts of the 5G network. Tarneit mother Katharine Butterworth said that, as someone with an open mind, she was “desperate for this 5G network to be stopped until further testing is completed”. “I understand there are a lot of conlicting stories both backed scientiically and medically but that alone should be enough for this to be recognised as a serious concern to us all,” she said. Call for breast cancer survivors By Alesha Capone A world-renowned Victoria University professor is inviting breast cancer survivors from across the west to participate in a research study. Professor Vasso Apostolopoulos, who grew up in St Albans and now lives in Wyndham, is Pro Vice-Chancellor of Research Partnerships at the university. Professor Apostolopoulos was the irst person in the world to develop the concept of immunotherapy for cancer in the 1990s, which today is used by hundreds of labs around the world. She has been recognised with more than

100 awards, including the Premier’s Award for Medical Research and Young Australian of the Year (Victoria). Professor Apostolopoulos is now conducting a study into the advantages of 24 weeks self-directed physical activity combined with motivational interviewing on mental health, quality of life and improvements to immune cells, in breast cancer survivors. Professor Apostolopoulos said motivational interviewing is a conversational technique used by professionals, to help patients make changes to their eating, alcohol consumption and activity levels. “he study aims to deliver important

information on whether physical activity is adhered, using a pedometer and motivational interviewing,” she said. “Being active has been shown to correlate to enhanced quality of life, improved psychological health and boost the immune system which would improve prognosis of breast cancer survivors.” Professor Apostolopoulos said the study started recruiting in January, and was looking for a total of 64 women to take part. “With the fear of COVID-19, I believe that the study will get delayed,” Ms Apostolopoulos said. “But, this study is a self-directed physical activity intervention and even if Australia takes on further restrictions, being home in

shutdown will cause anxiety in people. “It is important to be physically active even at home and being part of this study is a way to keep motivated.” he study’s target group is English-literate breast cancer survivors within three years of diagnosis and at least six months ater breast cancer treatments, who may be undergoing hormonal treatments and/or Herceptin treatment. Ideal ix for tough times A Kealba-based drapery business on the cusp of inancial ruin has turned things around and is giving back to the community. Ideal Drape Makers has operated in Melbourne’s western suburbs for many years and, according to business owner Nancy Vamvakas, looked likely to be another casualty of the COVID-19 pandemic. She says the company was kept aloat largely thanks to the federal government’s job-keeper package, allowing her to keep her employees on. Realising they needed to adapt, the team came up with a plan to protect the business and give back to the community at the same time. “We have re-purposed our factory to enable us to manufacture reusable, washable, cloth face masks,” Ms Vamvakas said. “Utilising hundreds of rolls of remnant fabrics from across the world’s premier fabric

houses … each one is unique and very stylish.” Ms Vamvakas said ater a couple of weeks of testing prototypes, production is currently at 1000 fabric face masks and the team is rapidly closing in on 2000 fabric face masks per week to help in the ight against COVID-19. She said she hopes to get the masks out to those performing essential services within the community. “Whilst we make no medical claims about our beautiful masks, they will certainly help to stop the wearer from spreading anything and they’ll look very stylish too,” she said. “We also want to donate our reusable, unique and completely sustainable face masks to the local ‘meals on wheels’ and charity organisations.” Tate Papworth

Virus a ‘time bomb’ ticking By Benjamin Millar A coronavirus “time bomb” is ticking in communities across Melbourne’s west, according to a community leader who is calling for more resources to tackle the looming threat. Dr Berhan Ahmed, chief executive of African Australian Multicultural Employment and Youth Services, said many families with young children, the elderly, people with disabilities and those sufering poor mental health are among those missing out on vital information and most at risk. confusing messaging around social isolation and diiculty obtaining key food staples has triggered a sharp rise in people seeking help. “here has been a lack of clear information about distancing and self isolation and the coronavirus,” he said. “People are not sure what to do and where to go; you see people walking together and talking

and that is my worry – that this is a time bomb.” Dr Ahmed said the situation has been especially diicult for mothers who don’t have a strong command of English. “hey are inding it hard to communicate because of the social isolation rules. Most of these people are inding it hard also with food, with people having limited income.” Families are also worried about education as term two schooling moves online. “Some of the families with children don’t have internet and that has been part of the crisis, that kids will have no access to schooling at home,” Dr Ahmed said.

“hey don’t know how they will be able to give their kids access in terms of continuity of studies.” Some translated materials have been made available, but many of these are not reaching the intended communities. Dr Ahmed said support hubs have been established in places such as the Somali Star Cafe in Footscray, helping link people with vital information and ensuring those let hungry do not go entirely without. “he goal was to reach out with some restaurants to deliver food and help ensure that these people are protected,” he said.

Puppy school goes online Puppy school has gone online during the coronavirus crisis. Hairy Hounds, based at Williamstown North, is ofering a virtual puppy school course for canine pupils aged 8-16 weeks. The world can wait By Goya Dmytryshchak A female boxer from Williamtown is waiting for her chance to take on the world. Stephanie Mfongwot, 26, has always been a ighter but now she’s yearning for a diferent battle. She and her family escaped violence in Cameroon to arrive in Australia in 2009. Mfongwot moved to Melbourne in 2012, the same year she won her irst national title representing the Northern Territory. “he main reason [I moved] was for boxing because being in Darwin I was the only female boxing there,” she said. While coronavirus has put her dreams on hold, she continues training towards her goal of giving something back to Australia by representing the country in boxing. Ater more than 20 amateur ights and winning numerous titles, Mfongwot is turning professional. She aims to ight Australian female middleweight champion and AFLW star Tayla Harris. “Of course I want to because she’s got what I want, which is the Australian title,” Mfongwot said. “I really want to ight her.” For the past ive months, Mfongwot has been living in Williamstown’s high-rise public housing lats, which she says can be pretty rough. Before the lockdown, she had been providing free boxing clinics for women. She hopes boxing may ofer a way to a better life. “I believe that, I believe that,” Mfongwot said. “Boxing is something that I enjoy doing, I love it. “Since I’ve been doing boxing, I’ve found peace in my soul. “I think I can make a living out of doing it.” hat would be putting it mildly, according to Williamstown’s Barry Michael. Michael reached the pinnacle of his career by beating Lester Ellis for the IBF super featherweight world title in 1985. But the late Melbourne gangster Alphonse Gangitano and his cohorts attacked Michael following his win, resulting in career-ending injuries. So, he turned his hand to promoting. Youth encouraged to speak up Mission Australia wants youth across the west to make their voice heard. he Christian charity has extended the opening period of its annual youth survey to encourage as many young people aged between 15-19 to have their say. Now in its 19th year, the survey is the largest online survey of its kind in Australia and provides a snapshot into the experiences and views of young people. his year, in the midst of the COVID-19 public health challenge, Mission Australia state leader Michele Leonard said the survey was more important than ever. “In this rapidly changing world, young voices matter. Now more than ever, we need to hear from young people about the issues that are afecting them,” she said. “During this period where many young people are adapting to change, it’s important that they have meaningful opportunities … to share their thoughts, concerns and aspirations. “In times of increasing uncertainty it is crucial we take the time to listen to what young people have to say on issues that afect them, their networks and our nation.” In 2019, more than 25,000 young people completed the survey across the country. Mental health, the environment and equity and discrimination were raised as the most important issues facing Australia at the time. Survey results also found that only about one in 15 young Victorians feel they have a voice all of the time in public afairs. “In a climate where young people are actively seeking out opportunities to make their views known, the Youth Survey 2020 ofers a safe and reliable platform to speak up. heir valuable insights provide up-to-date evidence to inform advocacy and policy change on the issues,” Ms Leonard said. Keeping it from home Inventive staf and students of Victoria University have started using chairs and books as make-shit gym equipment, during free virtual group workouts ofered by VU Sport. With the VU itness centres forced to close to the public due to the coronavirus, staf and students have launched the online workout sessions. Every weekday at noon, dozens of people – some accompanied by their children – join in the 40-minute virtual workouts, which are run through Zoom. he participants can all see each other on screen, and even send questions to their instructor. Team trainer Brooke Olsen runs sessions from her Werribee garage, which she has set up as a gym. She focuses on a diferent theme every day including cardio, upper body, legs and posterior chain. “We wanted to ofer a service that would keep the VU community happy and positive while

providing them with a healthy and fun way to connect to others,” Ms Olsen said. Within less than a week, 135 people registered for the virtual workout sessions, which will continue until VU’s sport centres can re-open. “he feedback has been great – we’re considering ofering more sessions at diferent times if the interest keeps building,” Ms Olsen said. Family’s driveway Anzac tribute By Alesha Capone Many families across the west will pay their respects on Anzac Day by standing in their driveways to observe a minute’s silence on Saturday morning. Although the Covid-19 pandemic means most residents cannot attend a traditional dawn service, a community-led campaign for Australians to mark Anzac Day on their driveways or balconies has taken of across the nation. Sisters Megan and Sarah Bamforth will both be standing in their family’s Hoppers Crossing driveway on Saturday morning. he girls will be joined by their mother Sherryn and cousin Kylie Walker, who is the executive oicer and squadron leader of the Australian Air Force Cadets (AAFC). Megan, 15, is an AAFC Cadet Sergeant, while her sister is a former Cadet Flight Sergeant (young people age out of the cadets ater they turn 18). heir family has a strong history of military service. “My great-grandfather’s name was Bruce Walker, he was a corporal in the army and served in Papa New Guinea during WWII,” Megan said. “My great-nanny Gene was in the Air Force as general service, at the Laverton Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) Base. “My other great-grandfather, from my grandfather’s side, was a merchant in the navy during WWI.” Megan said she and her family usually attended the Anzac Day March in Melbourne, and the dawn services in Werribee

or Sunshine. “Anzac Day, to me, is about remembering the soldiers that sacriiced their lives for our country and also for those who came back from protecting our country,” she said. “Each year the Air Force Cadets go to the top of the Shrine of Remembrance and we form the guard of honour with the Australian lags at the end of the march, being a part of Anzac Day is a very personal thing to my whole family and we will do it for many years to come.” Megan said that on Saturday morning, she and her family were planning to listen to ABC radio’s broadcast of the Melbourne dawn service, as they stood in their driveway.

When Maribyrnong track cyclist Luke Plapp received the most welcome phone call of his life – informing him he had been named in the squad to represent Australia at the Tokyo Olympics – he was dumbstruck. “I had a little tear in my eye when I found out I made the Tokyo team, it was a pretty special moment and I was just speechless,” he said. “For me personally, there is no bigger event than the Olympics for track cycling, this is what everyone works towards.” Still just 19 years old, Plapp was going to be the youngest member on the 2020 Track Team heading to the Olympics this July. But just two days later, his dream was in

tatters. “he Australian Olympic Committee had a group call with us and said even if the games were going ahead, Australia would not be sending a team,” he said. “hat was a pretty tough phone call to take because at that time the Olympics were still going ahead this year.” Plapp said it was an immense relief when the International Olympic Committee announced the Games would be postponed by 12 months, to July and August 2021. All athletes who have already qualiied for the Games will retain their qualiication for 2021. “I’ve gone from the biggest high of my life to one of my biggest lows,” he said.

“But now that goal is set in stone I’ve got something to work towards.” Plapp’s rise on the cycling world stage has been meteoric, his Olympic selection coming just over a year ater scooping of junior track cyclist of the year, junior road cyclist of the year and overall junior cyclist of the year Cycling Australia awards. Plapp said there are mental and physical challenges he must overcome to ensure he is at his peak by the time the Games roll around, but the extra year could give him the time to further develop and hone his performance. “With another 16 months of training I really think as a team we can get faster and stronger.”

Western Health has launched an emergency relief fund to fast-track support for staf and patients across the health service in the ight against COVID-19. he dedicated fund will direct donations towards the purchase of new equipment to cover increased demand during the crisis situation. It will also fund new healthcare initiatives such as telehealth and other digital platforms, and a wellbeing program for staf working on the frontline. Western Health Foundation director Julia White said unprecedented times called for unprecedented measures. “Although the health service has budgets in place, our resources will be tested and stretched to the limit,” she said. “he Emergency Response Fund will empower us to purchase those items we may not even know we need yet, and to do so quickly when we need to.” Western Health has put a number of measures in place to make sure it gets through the expected tough months ahead. A dedicated respiratory assessment clinic has been established at Sunshine Hospital, new wards have been prepared with additional acute and intensive care capacity to manage the expected increase in demand, and recruitment is underway for additional staf. Lockdown recipes Looking for a way to pass the time at home? Why not try working on your culinary skills? A Facebook community, #lockdownlarderAustralia, is rapidly building with people showing of their latest creations. We picked a few for you to try. Renée Biewer’s homemade ricotta gnocchi with asparagus pesto Ricotta gnocchi: 400g ricotta cheese ¼ cup parmesan cheese 1 cup plain lour 1 large egg 1 egg yolk ¼ tsp salt ¼ tsp pepper

For the dipping sauce: 1 small pot natural low-fat yoghurt 10 fresh mint leaves ¼ cucumber ½ clove garlic Juice of ½ lime For the meatballs: 250g lean minced lamb Juice of 1 lime 1 small clove garlic 1cm fresh root ginger Small handful fresh coriander leaves 1½ tsp curry powder

Asparagus pesto: 500g asparagus spears ¼ cup slithered almonds ½ cup parmesan cheese 3 cloves garlic 1 pinch crushed red pepper ¼ cup extra virgin olive oil 4 rashers bacon ¼ cup shaved parmesan 1 lemon Ricotta gnocchi: 1. Place the ricotta on a triple layer of paper towels. Cover it with another triple layer and press down, releasing liquid from the cheese. Scoop the cheese into a bowl and weigh out exactly 8 ounces for the gnocchi. If there is any leftover, use it for another dish! (or spread it on bread. Mmmm) 2. In a bowl, stir together the ricotta, 3/4 cup lour, grated parmesan, beaten eggs, salt and pepper until just combined – using a rubber spatula. Add the remaining lour 1 tablespoon at a time until the dough comes together, form a ball. Press it into a disk on a loured surface and cut it into four equal pieces. Take each piece and roll it into a log about 16 to 18 inches long. Cut 1-inch pieces with a sharp knife. 3. To cook, bring a pot of salted water to a boil. Once it’s simmering, add the gnocchi and cook about 2 to 3 minutes, until it loats for about 30 seconds. Remove with a large slotted spoon or sieve to drain. Reserve about 1/2 cup of the pasta water. Asparagus pesto: 1. Bring a pot of water to a boil. Cut the asparagus spears into thirds. Take a handful of asparagus and set it off to the side – we will toss the spears and pieces in the pasta. Add the remaining pieces to the boiling water and cook

until slightly tender but still bright green, about 5 to 6 minutes. Strain the asparagus. 2. Add the asparagus, toasted almonds, garlic, grated parmesan and crushed red pepper to a food processor. Pulse until the mixture begins to come together, then stream the olive oil in while the processor is running. Taste and season with salt and pepper if desired. (Note: this will make enough pesto that you will have some leftover – keep it in a sealed jar in the fridge and use it on everything! Toast, eggs, salads, sandwiches, chicken, shrimp, etc!) 3. Heat a skillet over medium-low heat and add the chopped bacon. Cook until completely crispy and the fat is rendered. Remove the bacon with a slotted spoon and place it on a paper towel to drain excess grease. Remove all but 1 tablespoon of the bacon fat from the skillet. Add the asparagus pieces that you set aside and toss. Cook for 2 to 3 minutes, until slightly tender. To serve: Serve the pasta, add it to the skillet with the asparagus. Toss the hot gnocchi with the pesto and a touch of pasta water – I add about 1/4 cup irst until I get the consistency I like. Add to a bowl with the asparagus pieces and spritz with lemon. Sprinkle the bacon on top. Top with shaved parmesan and a lemon wedge.

To make the dipping sauce: 1. Place the yoghurt in a bowl. 2. Wash the mint leaves, chop them inely and add to the bowl. 3. Wash, dry and chop the cucumber and add to the bowl. 4. Peel and inely chop or crush the garlic and add to the bowl. 5. Add the juice of ½ lime and stir. 6. Refrigerate. To make the meat balls: 1. Place the minced meat in a mixing bowl with 2 teaspoons of the lime juice and stir well. 2. Peel and inely chop or crush the garlic. 3. Peel and grate the ginger. 4. Wash, dry and chop the fresh coriander leaves.

5. In a small bowl, mix the chopped garlic and grated ginger with the curry powder and the remaining lime juice. 6. Add the spice paste to the meat and add the chopped fresh coriander leaves. 7. Using wet hands, divide the meat and roll into 16 small balls. 8. Thread the balls onto 4 skewers and refrigerate until ready to cook. 9. When ready to cook, pre-heat the grill. 10. Grill the spicy lamb balls under a medium heat, turning often, until cooked right through. 11. Serve with the dipping sauce.

Renée Biewer’s Za’atar Lamb Burgers with fried zucchini, baby spinach, tomato, onions and yoghurt Za’atar burgers: Mix all ingredients together, make into patties, refrigerate for an hour before frying. 500g lamb mine 1 red onion ½ cup continental parsley, fresh 4 cloves garlic 1 tsp ground cumin 1 tsp ground coriander ½ tsp ground cinnamon 1 tbsp tomato paste 1 egg ½ cup breadcrumbs, fresh if you have them ½ cup plain lour Salt & freshly ground black pepper, to taste

Burger illing: 100ml natural yoghurt 2 zucchini 4 bake-at-home long rolls 1 bag baby spinach 2 tomatoes Make the burgers, cook the rolls (or lightly toast any rolls you have on hand), grill the zucchini, assemble and eat. I would spread yoghurt in the bottom and top, mum would do one side, the other with hummus and start with spinach, tomatoes, patties, zucchini. (I add raw onion because I like it).

1. Bring all ingredients to the boil and pour over your choice of vegetables/ fruit and seal. This amount of pickling liquid was plenty enough for all three of these jars. 2. The eggplant and tomato were grilled over ire for approx 10 minutes irst, just to change it up and for extra lavour. The cucumber was fresh. 3. I threw some garlic and onion in for lavour and prettiness!

We’ve particularly been missing going out for brunch, so today we made our own. 1. Peel and grate 300g of sweet potato. Combine potato, two eggs and salt and pepper. 2. Heat 1cm of oil in a frying pan and when hot add your potato mix in whatever shape you’d like your rosti (we used a round pastry cutter). Cook for about four minutes each side or until golden and crispy. 3. Dry rosti on some kitchen towel and put your poached egg on top.
