Club tees off at bans Golfers should be allowed back on to Victoria’s fairways for exercise, according to Goonawarra Golf Club chairman Hans van Pelt. Earlier this month, the state government introduced new rules outlawing the sport and forcing clubs to shut their doors. However, Victoria is the only state to introduce a ban on golf, with the sport able to continue on greens interstate, as long as social distancing regulations are followed. Mr van Pelt said the Victorian ban had caused a lot of frustration among golfers. He has called for the state government to reverse its decision. “Golf is an outdoor activity that can be run in line with the isolation requirements,” he said. Mr van Pelt said the golf club, like many other supporting organisations, had been impacted inancially by the coronavirus pandemic. Council virus support plan By Laura Michell Financial support measures aimed at easing the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on Macedon Ranges residents, businesses and sporting clubs have been adopted by council. he new support measures included the suspension of late payment penalties on animal registrations until September 30; not charging interest on overdue rates or other payments until September 30; and ceasing debt collecting activities on unpaid rates until September 30. Chief executive oicer Margot Stork said
the new measures, which came into efect on April 3, would support the community during the crisis. “hese are unprecedented times for council, our community and businesses,” she said. “We are all in this together, supporting each other at this very challenging time.” Ms Stork said the council also had existing measures to help residents, businesses and sporting clubs, including allowing suppliers to request earlier payments and enabling groups to request a waiver of their lease fees. “We have been working on ways to reduce the pressure on our community, businesses
and sporting clubs. Please contact us so we can help,” she said. “We will also review our current budget to redirect funding to assist small business and our community groups in recovery. his will be an ongoing project – we are in this together, and for as long as necessary.” he new inancial measures are part of the council’s #InhisTogether campaign, which aims to support the wellbeing of the community by inding innovative ways to deliver services while council-run centres are closed. “Already our itness staf at the Kyneton Toyota Sports & Aquatic Centre are sharing

Four ined for COVID-19 breach By Laura Michell Police have ined four people in the Macedon Ranges for breaching the directive to stay at home without a valid reason. Police conducting spot checks in Gisborne earlier this month issued more than $6000 in ines ater four people were found outside their place of residence. people in isolation. A Kyneton charity has hailed the generosity of the local community during the coronavirus pandemic. Kyneton Caring Community operations manager Karen Wildenburg said a number of locals had donated to the charity’s food bank in recent weeks, while others had reached out to inquire how they could lend a hand. “In the last two weeks, I’ve had more phone calls from people calling to ask how they can help out than I’ve ever had,” Ms Wildenburg said. “It makes me proud to be a part of such a community … it is heartwarming.
Hundreds of Hume council employees have been stood down as the COVID-19 pandemic continues to impact council services. Council chief executive Domenic Isola conirmed to Star Weekly that 300 casual staf have been temporarily stood down. Mr Isola said it was a “diicult decision”, which was the result of state and federal government restrictions requiring council to close a number of services and facilities. “he coronavirus is having a devastating impact on our community, and Hume City Council as an organisation is not immune,” he said. “We have had to close our leisure centres, libraries, community facilities and learning centres … and we anticipate that more facilities may need to close as we all do our bit to ight against the spread [of COVID-19]. “We are providing daily updates to our staf as the situation evolves.” Mr Isola said afected staf would be provided with a special payment of two weeks’ pay and would be able to access their long service leave entitlements during the stand down period. It comes as the council continues to look for ways to keep services running during the lockdown. he Sunbury Aquatic and Leisure Centre is streaming regular group itness classes, while Hume libraries are ofering online storytime sessions via Facebook. he council has also created an advice hub to provide information and support for local bsuinesses. Sanitiser is Top Shelf A Campbellield distillery has started brewing hand sanitiser to help keep its factory open. Top Shelf International’s NED Whisky came up with the idea late last month as it looked for ways to soten the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on its business. Top Shelf International executive chairman Adem Karaili said the switch to hand sanitiser had not only been good for the business but had also improved the mental wellbeing of staf. “It has kept a lot of people employed who otherwise would have been stood down. We wanted to ensure we kept our doors open and utilise the assets we have,” he said.
“[It] has kept people motivated and upbeat.” he distillery is producing hand sanitiser that is 65 per cent ethanol and is available in 100ml and 750ml bottles Mr Karailli said the distillery was aiming to have produced 100,000 bottles of hand sanitiser by the end of the week. “here is obviously a community need for it,” he said. Fire danger period ends
By Laura Michell A Gisborne GP is providing the community with regular updates about COVID-19 on Facebook in a bid to stop the “scaremongering” and spread of incorrect information. Neal Street Medical Clinic’s Dr Umair Masood began writing the daily updates in early March in response to the growing number of questions patients had about coronavirus. “We were getting so many questions from so many patients … there is a lot of scaremongering and false information out there,” Dr Masood said. “I wanted to inform people about what is happening locally.” Dr Masood said he was “blown away” by the popularity of his updates, with the posts reaching thousands of people each day as patients share his information with their friends and family. He said that even though the Macedon Ranges has only recorded a small number of COVID-19 cases, it was important that everyone abided by state and federal government regulations and did their part to stop the spread of the virus. “I tell people that you should assume everyone has got it and behave accordingly,” Dr Masood said. “Just because there are ive cases, it doesn’t mean you can take your foot of the pedal.” Dr Masood said the most common question people had was ‘when is it going to inish?’ “In my opinion, it will last six months,” he said. he Neal Street Medical Clinic has also set up a respiratory clinic in its basement to enable it to treat patients with respiratory issues. he ire danger period for the Macedon Ranges has oicially ended. Residents can now burn-of on their properties without a permit, subject to local regulations. Macedon Ranges council prohibits burn-ofs on land less than 4000 square metres. he council’s assets and operations director Shane Walden said residents should consider several factors before planning a burn-of on their property. “Even though the weather’s cooled of, conditions can change and that’s particularly important to remember when it comes to burning of,” he said. “Remain vigilant … monitor your ire, don’t burn directly under overhanging branches and more importantly, monitor your burn-of for at least seven days aterwards to ensure it is fully extinguished. “Burn-ofs must be extinguished with water, not by burial.” Free disposal of larger loads of green waste is available at the council’s transfer station at Kyneton, Romsey and Woodend. Local winemakers have advised the council that local grape crops have not yet been harvested, due to a wet February. he council urges residents to postpone a burn-of to allow local wineries to harvest their crop without the risk of smoke. Council push for remote meetings By Laura Michell Macedon Ranges council has cancelled its next council meeting in a bid to reduce the risk to councillors and staf during the COVID-19 pandemic. he council is also investigating the possibility of conducting virtual council meetings while Victoria is in a state of emergency. At the March 25 council meeting, councillors voted to defer all items on the agenda, except for urgent business, to a future meeting and authorised chief executive Margot
Stork to introduce virtual council meetings. Councillors made the decision during a short meeting held outside the council chamber to enable social distancing regulations to be met. Councillors also agreed to cancel the April submitters committee meeting, which was scheduled for last Wednesday, and the April 22 council meeting. Ms Stork said she was working through how the councillors’ request for virtual meetings could be achieved within the conines of the Local Government Act. Under the act, councillors must be physically present in a
room to vote on decisions. Ms Stork said the council had raised the risk of in-person council meetings with the state government and the Municipal Association of Victoria. he MAV has since called for the state government to amend the Local Government Act to allow council meetings to be held remotely via methods such as video conferencing. MAV president, Cr Coral Ross said in-person council meetings were neither practical nor safe. “Inlexible council meeting requirements under state legislation is a signiicant concern
for local governments across the country as many council chambers do not allow for appropriate social distancing. his is an unprecedented situation which requires collaboration and innovative thinking,” she said. “With streaming and virtual meetings now widely available, we call on the Minister for Local Government Adem Somyurek and the state government to make this common sense decision and enable one of these options to be implemented as as an alternative to meeting face-to-face.”
Zooming in on choir he Cobaw With One Voice Central Victoria choir has taken its singing sessions online to help members stay connected. Cobaw community connections manager Carly Visscher said the choir, which is funded by Creativity Australia, aims to promote social connectedness and inclusion and improve the health and wellbeing of participants through singing. So it made sense for choir members to connect online using video conferencing platform Zoom during the coronavirus crisis, she said. “Connecting with each other, even if it has to be online for the time being, has never been more important,” Ms Visscher said. “If we can provide a safe space where people can laugh and enjoy the health beneits of singing, then we are doing the best we can in a time where we are more isolated than ever.” he choir, which is led by internationally
acclaimed singer and musician Gabriel Macura, recently marked its irst birthday with an online celebration. Ms Visscher said the switch to online rehearsals had resulted in new members joining the choir. Family violence fears increase By Laura Michell he state and federal governments are being urged to provide more support for family violence support services, with women’s health groups anticipating a surge in family violence incidents as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Women’s Health in the North, which supports women in Hume, and Women’s Health Loddon Mallee, which services the Macedon Ranges, has joined 48 other women’s health and gender equity groups in calling for
more funding for specialist family violence services. he groups, led by Gender Equity Victoria, issued a joint statement raising concerns that women will be at risk of family violence while self-isolating at home. hey say the research shows that family violence incidents spike during and ater “catastrophic” events. “Gender and disaster experts know that during and ater a signiicant catastrophic event that the pressure on families becomes enormous,” the statement said.
“here can be a return to rigid stereotypes which see men assume far more dominant roles in the household. In a pandemic with long periods of quarantine, these issues are more acute. “Family violence incidents are anticipated to rise, as is the severity of those incidents.” Gender Equity Victoria said the state and federal governments needed to fund specialist support services and emergency responders to help services respond to requests for help. It comes as the Interface Councils, which includes Hume, call on the state government to
open Orange Door Hubs in growth areas. he hubs and their associated outreach services are a recommendation from the Royal Commission into Family Violence and provides support to people experiencing family violence. Interface Councils spokeswoman Karen Egan said there are no Orange Door Hubs in the Interface Councils region. “Melbourne’s outer suburbs already have higher rates of family violence compared to the Melbourne metropolitan average,” Cr Egan said.
Brides embrace technology Brides across Australia had plans for their special day thrown into disarray ater the government announced tight restrictions to slow the spread of COVID-19. Weddings can be conducted with no more than ive people; including the couple, the celebrant and the witnesses. But like so many industries during these times, people are adapting. Aneta Pazeski who owns the Bridesmaids Dressing room in Keilor East said technology has played a massive part in helping brides plan their weddings. “We’ve taken measurements over video chat, shown colour and designs … pretty much everything we’d do in person,” Ms Pazeski said. “Some brides have opted to actually even have their weddings online, some have had smaller ceremonies, while others have postponed.” Bride-to-be, Lauren said she was still unsure what to do.
“I was supposed to get married in July, so it’s not far away, but there’s so much information constantly changing, that it’s hard to follow. “When reality hit I was let wondering if we want a ive person thing or do we wait and do it properly? “For now we’re planning as if it might happen, but aware it might not … there’s a lot worse things happening in the world right now and ways to get around these things.” For Bianca Spagnolo it was a diferent story. “We were meant to get married in Italy in June, so that’s deinitely cancelled,” Ms Spagnolo said. “We had over 100 people coming and 30 of my family members all booked lights … we’re scrambling for refunds at the moment.” Ms Spagnolo has rescheduled her pending nuptials for June, 2021. It’s a growing thing, gardening. According to Nursery and Gardens Australia, some 1.9 billion plants were sold in 2018 and 32 per cent of those customers were private consumers. Perhaps it’s that we’re more aware of the environment, maybe it’s the rise of online nurseries and ‘plantluencers’. Either way, Australians love surrounding themselves with plants. And a good thing too, because plants allow us to decorate, camoulage, screen, insulate and sustain the environment, all while keeping ourselves healthy.
Decoration and camoulage Plants make any space more attractive, whether indoors or disguising a dreary corner of the yard. The colours, scents, shapes, patterns and textures energise and simply encourage you to enjoy being in natural surroundings. On a balcony or in an apartment, grouping and staggering a few succulents together with lofty shrubs such as the rubber plant, can make a striking arrangement, says Plant Life Balance’s Jason Chongue. “When clustering plants, make sure to stick to
plants that require similar lighting levels,” he says. Privacy and insulation A few large palm fronds or even Ivy threading its way through trellis or up walls can help provide privacy, while a curtain of cascading spider plants and ferns may help ilter light and, through trans-evaporation, even help to naturally cool a space.
