Heroes behind 3D masks

A Williamstown coffee roaster has joined a group of community-spirited “makers and hackers” using 3D printing to help save lives in the coronavirus pandemic. James Davison is among a group of innovators using 3D printers, laser cutters and other manufacturing equipment at the FAB9 makerspace in Footscray to create face masks and shields for medical personnel ighting COVID-19. “We’re trying to get as much of this stuff ready to go before we have our maximum caseload,” Mr Davison said. “It could potentially save a lot of lives.” He hopes others will get involved in the global movement using open-source designs posted on the internet by HP, Formlabs and other tech companies. “Guys like myself can download … designs for masks or face shields and hit ‘print’ and you’ve got that sitting in your living room,” Mr Davison said. “It’s decentralised manufacturing.” FAB9 was founded by former Silicon Valley product manager, Hans Chang. “The current pandemic has made clear the incredible beneits that can come from a community of makers and hackers like ours, who can quickly come up with inventive ideas,” Mr Chang said. Businesses on the brink he national lockdown is taking a massive toll on Wyndham businesses. Level three government-imposed restrictions were put in place on Monday to combat the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic. Latest health department igures reported 21 cases of coronavirus in Wyndham and 821 statewide. Under the new restrictions, gatherings of more than two people are now banned across the state with on-the-spot ines of $1652 for individuals and $9913 for businesses. Members of households are exempt, as are places of employment and education. Premier Daniel Andrews said people should

only leave their homes to get food and supplies, receive medical care, undertake limited exercise, or to work or study. As businesses were forced to shut up shop, many feared they would not not reopen. Among them was Point Cook’s Martial Fitness Australia. Owners Allan and Kelly Malachowski broke the news to their members last week. “We must close our doors indeinitely to our wonderful members in the government’s latest attempts to crush the spread of the COVID-19 virus,” Mr Malachowski said in a Facebook post. “We knew that this day would eventually come, and we tried our very best to keep the doors open for as long as we could.” Numerous Wyndham cafes, food outlets

and supermarkets are still open for takeaway orders only. Owner of Notorious Espresso in Werribee, Hadi Chami, said the cafe would be ofering free cofees for health service workers, such as doctors, nurses and paramedics, plus employees from Woolworths, Coles and IGA. “It’s important to support local businesses at this time,” Mr Chami said. “It’s all about getting the community to stick together, rather than being every person for themselves.” Andrew Vourvahakis, director of Laverton North small goods supplier Andew’s Choice, said he feared for the future of his business. “We are totally devastated to watch the ramiications of the total shutdown of all pubs, clubs, restaurants, cafes and venues,” Mr Vourvahakis said.

“Chances are most of us won’t even be paid the debts owed to us … What’s most heartbreaking, is to see so many people’s livelihood and years of hard work stripped away overnight. We are all ighting very hard to keep aloat.” Healthcare workers are battling COVID-19 on the front line with Werribee Mercy last week conirming four cases among its staf. As reported irst in Star Weekly a staf member at the hospital was diagnosed with the virus. hree other staf members from the hospital also tested positive. Health Minister Jenny Mikakos said the hospital workers were all in a stable condition. Mercy Health said the afected staf were all self-isolating and recovering at home.

Wyndham vets adapt to new world Veterinary practices across Wyndham are adjusting the way they operate, to keep both pets and humans safe during the COVID-19 pandemic. While there is no evidence that dogs or cats can catch coronavirus, or pass it on to humans, measures have been put in place to reduce the likelihood of vets and their staf potentially catching the illness from pet owners. U-Vet Werribee Animal Hospital will remain open but will only accept urgent cases, and will no longer allow the public into the building. Direct Vet Services (DVS) in Point Cook is ofering telemedicine consultations and virtual consultations via remote conferencing services such as Skype or Zoom, where possible.

he practice is also asking people who bring their pets to the clinic to leave them in a bank of cages, provided outside the door. he veterinarians will check and treat the pet, while their owners remain in their vehicle. he animals will then be returned to the cages, for owners to collect. Due to the size of the DVS facility, one pet owner may be allowed inside at a time, provided the owner remains a safe distance from all staf. he practice is asking all clients to use a hand sanitiser provided and maintain a distance of more than one metre from staf where possible. he federal government has declared veterinarians are an essential service, and has

not put any restrictions on them other than the practice of social distancing and hygiene practices during the COVID-19 crisis. he volunteer-run Purrs of Point Cook group has called for more foster carers for its cats and kittens. In a Facebook post, the group said its existing foster carers “are stretched to the limit”. Potential foster carers are subject to approval screening and are asked to provide food, litter, water, shelter, worm and lea treatment for the cats. From doughnuts to dough By Esther Lauaki Two Point Cook chefs are making the best of a bad situation – with doughnuts. Alex Lam Cheung and James Huynh, who moved from New Zealand to further their culinary careers, were among the thousands of workers stood down or laid of because of the COVID-19 pandemic. More than a million workers face losing their jobs as the federal government forces business closures to stop the spread of the virus. Outside Werribee Centrelink last week, hundreds of newly unemployed people lined up in a queue that snaked from Synnot Street to Watton Street.

Alex and James, both permanent employees, were stood down from Oh Happy Day Cafe last Friday, along with eight of their co-workers. he duo immediately launched an online business, Crucial Dough, selling doughnuts for pick up from pop-up locations in Point Cook and Melbourne CBD. Alex said it was the “Kiwi” thing to do. “We knew the day was going to come that [Oh Happy Day Cafe] would close and we can’t get any government help,” he said. “But we can’t sit here crying about it. We’ve gotta get up and do something. “Being Kiwis, we always ind a way to get over a sticky situation. We’re not going to let fear make decisions for us.”

he 25 year-old mates started their careers together in New Zealand eight years ago. Alex relocated to Australia in 2015 and James joined him just nine months ago. hey said the name of their pop-up business, Crucial Dough, relected their needs and current situation. Werribee RSL sub-branch president Daryl Ryan has urged Wyndham residents to mark Anzac Day at home this year. he RSL’s traditional Anzac Day dawn service, gunire salute and breakfast have been cancelled this year due to COVID-19 concerns, but Mr Ryan said it was still important to pay tribute to the Australians who have served in wars and conlicts. “Just remember what the day is about,” he said. Mr Ryan said the COVID-19 pandemic had meant that RSL members have not been able to sell Anzac Day badges in the lead-up to April 25. Werribee RSL normally would use the money raised through the sale of badges to support its welfare program for veterans in need. “People oten don’t realise we have veterans in the community who come to us when they can’t buy food, can’t pay the rent or their rates,” Mr Ryan said. “We use the funds raised through Anzac Day activities to help them out – this year, we’ll just have to ind the funds from somewhere else.” he Werribee RSL sub-branch has temporarily closed to the public because of restrictions imposed on public gatherings. Police are trying to identify a man after a sexual assault was committed on a Werribee line train on January 29. Police said a man, who boarded the train between the city and Newport railway station about 6.20pm, rubbed himself against a female passenger before exiting the train at Laverton. The man is perceived to be of subcontinental appearance, aged between 35 and 40 years old, about 178cm tall and was wearing glasses and headphones at the time of the incident. By Esther Lauaki Fully stocked shelves were a sight to behold at the opening of Tarneit’s newest supermarket. he brand-new Coles at Davis Road opened last Wednesday creating 149 jobs for Wyndham. Store manager Mona Elhaouli said she was thrilled to be creating new local jobs and ofering the community a tailored local product range. “It’s fantastic to be able to contribute to job creation in the local community at a time of such uncertainty,” Ms Elhaouli said. “We hope our brand-new supermarket and tailored product range will be welcomed by the community and our customers.” Tarneit’s new convenience-focused supermarket also welcomed 40 team members transferring from other Coles stores across Melbourne, bringing the team total to 189. Ms Elhaouli said for almost 109 new recruits, it would be their irst time entering the workforce. “[hese jobs] are in addition to Coles’ initiative to recruit more than 5000 casual team members to work in supermarkets across Australia, allowing the company to serve more customers and replenish shelves faster, while ofering employment opportunities for Australians working in other industries impacted by COVID-19,” she said. he new store will support Tarneit P-9 College’s Breakfast Club through food donations, providing healthy and nutritious breakfasts for students who otherwise may not be able to aford it. A social media group has been set up encouraging residents in the Woodville Estate in Hoppers Crossing to check in on each other and ofer assistance to neighbours who are doing it tough. he Woodville Residents Facebook group administrator Andrew Elsbury said the community needed to stay connected more than ever before. “As a community we can work together to ensure our neighbours are OK and have the supplies they need during the COVID-19 crisis,” Mr Elsbury said. “Check in on the elderly to ensure they are well and have what they need to get through. “If needed, do their shopping for them and then leave it at their doorstep to both protect them and yourself.” Mr Elsbury also urged residents to download the VicEmergency App on their phones for regular state and federal government updates. “I would strongly encourage other neighbourhoods to follow the Woodville example and coordinate assistance for the vulnerable,” he said. “Who knows the silver lining could be new friendships and a new sense of community across Wyndham. “We are also encouraging the support of local business during this time of diiculty and ater this crisis passes.” Details: https://bit.ly/2vPI3hz Esther Lauaki

Seafood shake-up ‘dire’ By Esther Lauaki he seafood industry is in danger of “disappearing” unless the state government intervenes, Western Victoria MP Bev McArthur says. In Parliament last week, Ms McArthur said ishers and their employees face zero cash-low and inancial ruin as a result of COVID-19. “Wild catch, farmed ishing, and processing are now in near total shutdown,” she said. She said the industry had seen a collapse in domestic sales to restaurants and individuals on top of the failure of the Chinese market in January, the beginning of the coronavirus crisis.

New ways to see art Wyndham council is using innovation to bring art to the community, ater the COVID-19 pandemic forced its galleries to close. he council recently hosted its irst digital exhibition opening. “We had the REVEAL exhibition hung and we knew the community was excited to see all of council’s artwork on display at the Wyndham Art Gallery,” arts and heritage portfolio holder, Cr Tony Hooper said. “With the closure of the Wyndham Art Gallery, due to health preventative measures, we had to ind another way for the community to view these works. “On hursday night, Wyndham residents and people across the globe had the opportunity to experience the opening night online with a video tour of the exhibition, while enjoying the comfort of their own homes.” Cr Hooper said the online video showed the council’s newly-acquired artworks, such as Mirka Mora’s Young Devil with Rabbit charcoal drawing, which has been on loan to the Heide Museum of Modern Art; a photograph by Leilani Fuimaono; a painting by Sue Anderson; and a new collaborative work created by Jessie Deane and community members. Volunteers lend a hand

By Alesha Capone It’s mostly business as usual for the farms in Werribee South. Agricultural producers in the suburb are adjusting to COVID-19 regulations as they continue with day-to-day operations. Sisters Renay Ahmed and Danyel Cucinotta, who are third-generation farmers at LT’s Egg Farm and the adjoining Wyndham Cache Deli and Cafe, said they became “very busy” as the large supermarkets ran out of produce last month. “However, our customers have been thoughtful and if everyone is patient and only purchases what they need, our chickens will continue to lay daily,” Ms Ahmed said.

She said that although the business has always followed a strict quality assurance program and food safety plan, they have now increased cleaning to an hourly timetable. Ms Ahmed said they were also encouraging social distancing within the café, which is only permitted to do takeaway. “his is the time for us as a community to go to the butcher, bread shop, egg farm and utilise small local business,” Ms Ahmed said. “If we do, more people will stay in a job, who then can continue spending money in the community.” At Velisha Farms – a wholesaler of vegetables such as broccoli, lettuce, caulilower and kale – managing director Catherine Velisha said demand from supermarkets had remained

“relatively steady” in the past few weeks. “Last week there was deinitely an increase in demand, I think that was spurred on by panic buying,” she said. “hat seems to have settled a bit, ater the weekend, particularly in Victoria, I think due to the assurances from the government and suppliers that we grow enough food.”

However, Ms Velisha said that wholesale markets might notice a reduction in demand as restaurants and cafes begin to close. She said that while Velisha Farms had always maintained a high standard of hygiene, it has introduced working from home programs for employees; social distancing in its sheds; and staggered work times for staf.

Wyndham volunteers are spreading kindness by running deliveries, helping the elderly at the supermarket and distributing toilet rolls to families in lockdown. Salvation Army Wyndham City members have spent their mornings assisting elderly and disabled shoppers at Werribee Woolworths, as well as making free meals for locals to take away. “We’re living, loving and ighting alongside others that need some extra assistance,” one volunteer said. Meanwhile, residents of Eynesbury received a git of toilet rolls on their doorsteps last week. Volunteers from property developer Resimax Group distributed more than 6000 rolls in an efort to unite and support the local community. Virus raises family violence risk By Alesha Capone Women’s Health West says it is expecting to see a “spike” in reports of family violence as the COVID-19 pandemic continues. he not-for-proit organisation provides services such as court support, crisis housing and case management to women and children who experience violence in Wyndham, Hobsons Bay, Maribyrnong, Melton, Brimbank, Moonee Valley and Melbourne. WHW’s chief executive Dr Robyn Gregory said: “Our expectation is that we will see a rise in demand over the coming months.

“Due to local and international research, we expect there to be a spike in family violence.” Dr Gregory said reports of family violence oten increased during times of disaster and emergency. She said an example of this was research, conducted by the Gender & Disaster (GAD) Pod – a partnership of two Victorian Women’s Health organisations and the Monash University Disaster Resilience Initiative – which found there was an increase of family violence reports made during and ater the Black Saturday bushires. Dr Gregory said it was “absolutely normal” to feel out of control at a time when people

were going into isolation, losing jobs and experiencing inancial hardship, but that individuals could choose how they responded to such a situation. “Violence is never acceptable in the home and a pandemic is not an excuse for violence,” she said. Dr Gregory said it was important for those who needed assistance with family violence to realise they could still seek help, even under coronavirus regulations. “Women’s Health West is continuing to deliver services to women and children who experience family violence, including

gender-diverse and non-binary communities,” she said. Dr Gregory said WHW was using phone calls, video-conferencing and online assistance to communicate with clients, when possible. Some WHW employees, especially those involved with refuges and crisis accommodation, still needed to attend work in person. “Ater hours, there still might be a time when women and kids have to leave home with absolutely nothing,” she said. Paw-fect cheerleaders Samantha Neil and her cavoodle Rusty have been bringing a dose of doggy cheer to patients at St Vincent’s Private Hospital Werribee for the past eight months. Ms Neil and Rusty, who is 3.5 years old, volunteer with the Delta Society, a not-for-proit organisation which aims to help animals bring joy to patients at places such as hospitals, aged care facilities and schools. “Ater being a full-time stay-at-home mum for seven years, I was ready to get out and about once both my children went of to school at the start of last year,” Ms Neil said. “I didn’t want to leave Rusty at home on his own and I already knew he had a great temperament and loved people.” Ms Neil said ater hearing about Delta Dogs, she decided to get Rusty assessed to see if he could become a doggy volunteer with the organisation.

“He passed and then we got placement at St Vincent’s Hospital Werribee where we visit patients and staf on a weekly basis,” she said. “I love volunteering at St Vincent’s, because I love seeing Rusty light up the room. “If I can brighten someone’s day just a little bit during their diicult time then I am happy. “Rusty loves going because he gets cuddles of everyone, he gets to sit up on chairs and snuggle with the patients in their beds.” Ms Neil said she and Rusty have also visited university libraries and workplaces, as part of Delta Dogs’ programs. Teen’s bald ambitions A Hoppers Crossing teen has again gone bald for blood cancer. Brayden Koropeckyj, 15, recently participated in the World’s Greatest Shave for the third time. he year 10 homas Carr College student has raised just over $4000 for blood cancer research in the past three years. his year he honoured his grandfather who he lost last year to leukemia. “he fact that I know I could be potentially saving a life is why I have done it three times,” Brayden said. “It’s just one small thing that I am doing – shaving my hair and asking others to donate – it’s more their donations that help [towards cancer research]. “I know my family support me 100 per cent

and are very proud of me, especially ater our loss of my grandfather mid last year from leukemia.” Brayden’s locks were just above his shoulders when he decided to shave down to a “zero” for the cause. “My hair at the back was down to the back of my neck and on the sides it was growing over my ears and similar length on top. “I’ll keep on taking part in the World’s Greatest Shave … maybe not next year, but in future years to come I deinitely see myself doing it again.” Brayden has raised $1560 this time around. Eight arrests over gym thefts By Esther Lauaki Eight youths have been arrested following an investigation into a series of crimes linked to thets from itness centres in the western suburbs. Victoria Police’s Wayward taskforce and Altona North Divisional Response Unit detectives executed warrants in Tarneit, Truganina, Werribee, Wyndham Vale, Point Cook and Sunbury on March 20. Seven males and one female are facing more than 30 charges in relation to ofences

including home invasion, burglary, armed robbery, assault, thet of motor vehicles, petrol drive-ofs and other traic-related ofences. hose charged are aged between 14 and 20 years-old. Two were released pending further inquiries. Six of the youths were remanded to appear at a children’s court. hey included a 15-year-old Sunbury boy and a 16-year-old Tarneit boy both charged following an alleged violent armed robbery in Tarneit on March 2 which resulted in a

teenage victim being taken to hospital with serious head injuries. he teens have been charged with intentionally causing serious injury in circumstances of gross violence, robbery and other ofences. Westgate Investigation and Response Inspector Rhonda Brown said police had been working around the clock to bring those targeting gyms to steal cars and commit further serious crimes before the courts. “his ofending has led to serious high-harm ofences being committed, which

have a signiicant impact on the community’s safety and feelings of safety. “Our message to those committing these ofences is clear – police will hunt you down and we will ensure you do not continue to inlict harm on the Victorian community.” Police are working with itness centres across Melbourne to address security issues and implement crime prevention measures such as lockable storage devices and CCTV. Victoria Police is asking the community to exercise caution and secure their valuables when attending gyms and leisure centres.

Keep walking this May Wyndham residents and their pooches are being encouraged to hit the pavement in their own backyards and neighbourhoods as part of the RSPCA’s Million Paws Walk. he annual public walk, scheduled for May 17, has been cancelled in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the RSPCA is asking people to put on their walking shoes and take their four-legged friends on a walk in their local area during May, while still following the rules of social distancing. he RSPCA said the new event format, now known as Million Paws Walk: Walk his May, will encourage people to spend time with their dogs while still providing a pathway for participants to contribute to animal welfare and support RSPCA’s work to help end animal cruelty. RSPCA Victoria chief executive Liz Walker said participants can still donate and raise

Petition urges action on buses By Alesha Capone A petition calling for upgraded bus services in Tarneit has been presented to State Parliament. Western Metropolitan MP Catherine Cumming tabled the petition, containing 330 signatures, last month. Dr Cumming said the petition highlights “the escalating commuting issues caused by a lack of new bus routes and poor bus frequency in Tarneit”. “With patronage at Tarneit train station increasing at an exponential rate, there is an immediate need for more bus routes to cover

residential estates like Habitat, he Grove, Haven, Newhaven, Little Green, Riverdale Village, Allura, Elements, Albright and Rothwell,” she said. “he Western Rail Plan project that includes electriication of the Wyndham Vale train line, as part of Victoria’s Big Build project, could easily take a decade or more to complete and is not expected to start before 2022. “Residents are not ready to wait another 10 to 12 years to solve the current commuting issues.” Dr Cumming also said that residents of some estates faced a “considerable safety

risk” because they had to “walk unsafely” on Dohertys and Derrimut roads to reach Tarneit station, while roadworks are taking place. “he petitioners therefore request that the Legislative Council call on the government to prioritise pedestrian safety, review existing bus routes in Tarneit and increase their frequency to every 15 to 20 minutes and prioritise new bus routes to and from Tarneit train station, especially for estates that have experienced large population growth,” she said. A Department of Transport spokesperson said it was continuing to “evaluate and review our bus routes to look

for improvements and deliver the best possible services for passengers”. “We know how important public transport is to growing outer metropolitan regions and that’s why we’re currently looking at how we can improve bus services right across Wyndham.” A state government spokesperson said: “Bus services are vital in the outer suburbs and we recognise the need to continue growing the network as our suburbs grow … We’re working hard to get more buses on the roads, more oten, in the outer growth corridors across the west.”

MY WYNDHAM Point Cook’s Leesa Gray-Pitt is an artist, is studying a masters of ine arts and is a board member of the RedWest Creatives Co-Op, which aims to share knowledge, auspice grants and grow the arts scene in the west. She chats with Alesha Capone. How long have you lived in Wyndham? I lived in Tarneit for a while, then Williamstown for a bit and then I came to Point Cook, over 12 years ago.

of the area, it was hell for a while there. I do love Wyndham council, too. I think we have a very vibrant arts community in Wyndham, and with RedWest. I think Wyndham council realises how valuable arts are in the community. What do you enjoy most about being an artist?

My second husband and I just missed out on buying a house in Williamstown, and we started thinking, ‘let’s build’. Between us we had seven children and then I became pregnant. We thought that we would like to be on the water, we came out to the area – I think it was called Point Cook Waterside then – to look at buying some land. It was very much like Williamstown then, you could walk around the wetlands and everyone would say hello.

It’s just something I have to do. I am always surprised by how much people love my art. I was lucky enough to sell two paintings in two weeks, at the start of the year. It always astounds me that people are willing to put their hard-earned cash into the things I create. I do put my heart and soul into my life, my art is like a visual diary of my life.

What do you like about Point Cook?

How has the coronavirus afected the creative industry?

I love how close it is to the coast, I love the Great Ocean Road and Torquay. It’s still on the water, to an extent. I have to be close to the beach, that is my grounding spot. he facilities and schools are great, it’s a pity they didn’t keep up with how much the suburb was booming then. At least now we have four entries and exits out

Many events have been cancelled and so many people have had their incomes stripped, everything gone. I was supposed to have my irst solo exhibition in May, I don’t think that’s going to go ahead. I just want everyone to look ater each other, we are all in this together and we can share the love.

Mercedes pulls out the big guns By Ewan Kennedy, Marque Motoring Two new Mercedes-AMG models featuring the world’s most powerful 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine in series production are on their way to Australia. he Mercedes-AMG A 45 S 4MATIC+ hatch and Mercedes-AMG CLA 45 S 4MATIC+ four-door coupé not only turn up the power but have been thoroughly redesigned. “We have completely redesigned our 45 models – from the engine and transmission through the chassis, the elaborately constructed drivetrain to the body structure and of course the design itself – all with one goal: to raise vehicle dynamics and the sporty driving experience to a level previously unimaginable in the compact class,” said Mercedes-AMG chief executive Tobias Moers. he engine generates 310 kW of power and 500 Nm of torque and transmits it to all four wheels by way of an AMG SPEEDSHIFT DCT-8G transmission with eight ratios and gearshits measured in milliseconds. he hatch sprints from zero to 100km/h in just 3.9 seconds, the coupe takes an extra tenth due to it being a little heavier, but 4.0 seconds is still pretty quick. Both models feature an extensively reinforced bodyshell with a lightweight aluminium plate bolted beneath the engine to increase front-end torsional rigidity. Further reinforcement supports the suspension system. his results in highly precise responses even at the physical limits, giving the driver clearly deined feedback, plus less rolling and pitching on bends, when braking and during load cycles. he AMG RIDE CONTROL adaptive damping system is itted as standard, and enables the driver to choose between three diferent suspension control modes, from
