Shop local to ight fallout Sunbury and Macedon Ranges residents are being urged to buy from their local businesses to help save jobs and minimise the impact the COVID-19 pandemic has on traders. Sunbury Business Association president Michael Osborne said local shopping was now more important than ever because small businesses could take a “big hit” inancially as a result of the virus. “I would suggest, where possible, using local businesses to ensure that they survive,” he said. “Even if it’s online, use their online facilities, purchase gift cards for future use down the track. “Lots of businesses survive week to week and they are not going to be able to keep their doors open unless we can support them in any way we can.” Mr Osborne said shopping at local businesses did extend to supermarket giants such as Coles and Woolworths. “They hire local employees,” he said. “Having said that, don’t forget about the local corner store. You’d be surprised that they’ll have the things you need that the big supermarkets don’t.” Jessica Micallef

Virus shuts down region By Jessica Micallef Schools have closed and all pubs, clubs, casinos, cinemas, gyms and places of worship have been shut as the state battles the COVID-19 pandemic. he state government announced that essential services would continue to operate, including banks, supermarkets, chemists and service stations. he prime minister on Sunday asked all Australians to cancel non-essential travel. Many public facilities and services in the Macedon Ranges and Sunbury have closed and events have been cancelled or postponed. he shutdown comes as Macedon Ranges recorded two cases of COVID-19.
Last week, Macedon Ranges council made the decision to close all council-run pools, gyms and leisure centres, libraries in Kyneton, Gisborne and Woodend, council service desks in Kyneton, Gisborne, Woodend and Romsey and the Kyneton Museum, for at least one month. All arts and culture events at the Kyneton Town Hall have been cancelled or postponed. Visitor information centres did not open on March 14 and 15 and will remain closed until further notice. he council said its kindergartens and maternal and child health centres would remain open until it is notiied by health authorities and the state government to close. Residents who have memberships, programs
or tickets for council facilities or centres will be contacted directly regarding future arrangements. he council’s chief executive oicer Margot Stork said the council was taking a proactive approach in order to protect the health and wellbeing of the community. Meanwhile, Riddells Creek Foodworks has been forced to limit the store to local shoppers only, with reports of “busloads” of city shoppers making their way to regional supermarkets to panic buy. Store manager Joanna Bodsworth said security guards have been placed outside the store to check shoppers’ identiication before entering the store. “We are reducing entry to the store to locals only that live in a radius
of about 12 kilometres of Riddells Creek,” she said. Residents from Riddells Creek, Clarkeield, Monegeetta, Bolinda, Romsey, Lanceield, Gisborne, New Gisborne, Cherokee and Sunbury from Riddell Road up to and including Settlement Road will only be allowed to shop at the Riddells Creek Foodworks on Station Street. Williamson’s Foodworks in Gisborne has reduced its store hours to 9am-8pm, with the irst hour of trade reserved for pensioners. Closures were also put in place across Hume last week. he council closed its three senior centres, including the Sunbury facility on O’Shanassy Street. Hume council has provided a detailed list of cancelled events on its website.

Thefts drive rise in crime rate By Jessica Micallef Crime in Macedon Ranges rose by almost ive per cent in the year to December 2019, new igures show. he latest data from the Crime Statistics Agency reveal a total of 2443 ofences were recorded across the municipality, an increase from 2332 in the previous year. Of the ofences recorded, 47.9 per cent resulted in arrests or summons and 38.9 per cent of the recorded ofences remain unsolved. According to the agency, property and deception ofences – including arson, property damage, burglary and breaking and entering,

thet and deception – have risen by 9 per cent (from 1222 ofences to 1332) in the year to December 2019. Macedon Ranges Police Inspector Chris Large said while the region had “relatively low” crime rates, petrol thet, shopping centre burglaries and thet from homes and motor vehicles continued to be a concern. “A lot of the thets are in regards to thet of
petrol and from shopping centres,” Inspector Large said. “But we have been working hard … to try and reduce this. “We urge the community to make sure their house is prepared as best as it possibly can be … and well lit. “Get someone to look ater the property. It’s also probably not the best option to post on social media when you are not going to be at home.” Crimes against the person – including assault, robbery, stalking and harassment, dangerous and negligent acts, abduction and sexual ofences – rose by almost three per cent
in the same period (from 342 ofences to 352 ofences). Kyneton recorded the highest number of criminal ofences across the Macedon Ranges, with 495 ofences reported in the year to December 2019, compared to 511 ofences in the previous year. It was followed by Gisborne (435), Woodend (267), Romsey (267) and Macedon (185). In Hume recorded ofences rose 3.6 per cent (from 20,705 to 21,445) in the year to December 2019. Sunbury recorded the third highest number criminal ofence across Hume, with 3051 ofences reported, compared to 2796 in the previous year.

Mental health carers in Sunbury and the Macedon Ranges can be assured they are being looked ater. Gisborne organisation PS My Family Matters ofers support to carers and family members of individuals with mental illnesses in Sunbury and the Macedon Ranges. he organisation last month received $13,500 as part of the state government’s Supporting Carers Locally Grants Program, which supports carers in regional areas and under-recognised groups. he money will be used to run peer social support groups, Cofee4Carers and Pizza4Carers, which enable carers to meet and socialise with other carers. he grant will also support the employment of a facilitator and coordinator. PS My Family Matters president Tamara Wilson said the money would go a long way. “his grant is invaluable to helping us ofer a service to the Macedon Ranges to the numerous carers that our organisation has come into contact with,” she said. Speeding driver caught

A 26-year-old Melton man had his vehicle impounded earlier this month after allegedly driving at 41km/h over the speed limit on the Calder Freeway. The man was allegedly driving 151km/h in a 110km/h zone. Macedon Ranges Highway Patrol oficers intercepted the driver, who also tested positive to amphetamines. The man will face the Melbourne Magistrates Court at a later date.

Changes to voting wards
By Jessica Micallef A Lanceield winery is one of the great wineries in Australia. Wilimee Winery was one of three Macedon Ranges wineries named on the Young Gun of Wine’s 2020 list of the top 50 Australian winemakers. Lyons Will Estate in Lanceield and Dilworth and Allain in Romsey also made the top 50. Wilimee Winery owner and winemaker Ben Ranken said it was an honour to be recognised in such a “high regard” for a third year running. “It’s pretty exciting, it’s lovely,” he said. “We are fortunate enough to be in the top 50 in the last three years and each time it’s with a diferent group of other Macedon Ranges wineries.” he Lanceield winery is no stranger to success – it made the inal 12 of the Young Gun of Wine award last year for its chardonnay and pinot noir. Mr Ranken said the secret to the perfect glass of wine was balance. “You need great quality grapes,” he said. “In the Macedon Ranges, we are the coolest region in mainland Australia, from a climate point of view. “It gives our fruit more time to mature, to become richer to create interesting lavours. “It’s also a great place to drink some wine.” Mr Ranken has been a winemaker for 20 years and has owned his Lanceield winery for six years. “I enjoy the variety of the job,” he said. “One day you are inside, doing oice work. hen the next day you are outside in the vineyards or the winery. Voters in Hume could ind themselves in diferent wards ahead of the council’s October elections. he Victorian Electoral Commission (VEC) is reviewing Hume’s boundary structure and in a preliminary report released last month recommended changes to all of Hume’s wards – Jacksons Creek, Aitken and Meadow Valley. According to the VEC, the change is required due to the voter-to-councillor ratios in all wards being more than 10 per cent above or below the average voter-to-councillor ratio. Based on current enrolments, proposed boundary changes would impact 12,464 voters in Hume. he VEC suggests sections of Attwood and Westmeadows (Meadow Valley ward) located to the west of Mickleham Road, sit in the Jacksons Creek ward. he report also proposes parts of the Aitken ward, including Roxburgh Park, the area east of the Craigieburn railway line and south of Craigieburn Road East, comprising of Campbellield, Somerton and part of Craigieburn, become part of the Meadow Valley ward As a result of the changes, 15.1 per cent of Aitken ward voters would be in Meadow Valley ward and 4.8 per cent of Meadow Valley voters would fall into the Jacksons Creek ward. he report does not propose any changes to councillor representation of any ward. Police boost for Macedon By Jessica Micallef Nine extra police oicers will be added across the Macedon Ranges as part of a state government plan to deploy more than 3000 new oicers across Victoria by April 2022. he nine oicers will be among 788 additional police and 25 protective service oicers to be deployed across Victoria over 12 months, starting from May. he Bendigo police service area which covers the Macedon Ranges, Goldields and Campaspe areas will share 14 divisional oicers including
one highway patrol oicer and ive criminal investigation oicers. No additional oicers were allocated to Hume. Victoria Police said several factors were taken into consideration when allocating new police oicers to stations, including calls for assistance, reported crime, event management, traic incidents and the time required to provide these services. Deputy Commissioner Rick Nugent said the additional police oicers would be a welcome relief.
“he additional numbers will assist our oicers tackle key issues we face in rural areas such as family violence, drugs, road trauma and natural disasters,” he said. “It also means more police on the beat than ever before, who will be working around the clock to protect the community, prevent crime and hold ofenders to account. “he inlux of oicers in regional areas will also assist us in enhancing or ability to provide immediate assistance when state disasters occur, such as bushires or loods.” Police and Emergency Services Minister Lisa
Neville said the rollout of additional oicers included an extra 208 oicers who will go into specialists roles such as state emergency support, road policing and family violence units. Macedon MP Mary-Anne homas said the nine extra oicers were a “major boost” for the area. “hese police will be out in the community protecting and serving residents to reduce crime, backed by the resources they need to target and prevent burglaries, violent crime and family violence.”
Mass shave takes off Grade 6 pupil homas was among many who recently got into the shave of things. he Woodend Primary School pupil shaved of his long locks earlier this month as part of the World’s Greatest Shave to raise money for the Leukaemia Foundation. homas, 11, grew his hair for 18 months prior to the shave. “I started growing my hair because I didn’t want to go to the hairdressers,” he said. “It grew long and eventually I thought that I could do the World’s Greatest Shave. “It [my hair] was a little more than 32 centimetres.” homas raised $3450 for the Leukaemia Foundation and decided to donate his hair to Sustainable Salons to turn into a wig. “I am happy that I went along with the decision,” homas said. “It’s an amazing cause and I am proud.” Macedon Ranges Health chief executive Sandra Hills last month also provided haircuts
to ive local participants. She said it was an honour to take part in the international event for the fourth year. “I might not be the best hairdresser around, but it’s wonderful to be part of a local event like this that brings so many people in the community together to raise charitable funds and give back to important health causes,” she said. “Ken Reither from the Gisborne Men’s Shed, has done a great job yet again in spreading the word and helping to showcase Gisborne’s vibrant community spirit.” Men’s shed members organised a barbecue and rale on the day, raising more than $7000. Two towns, one house
Young people to have a say
By Jessica Micallef A group of residents is rallying to save an abandoned house in Macedon. Known as the Macedon and Mount Macedon Community House Group, members have created on online crowdfunding campaign to renovate the building at 47 Victoria Street, Macedon. he weatherboard house was constructed in the 1940s, and was used as a maternal and child health facility from the 1960s to 2016. It has been vacant since 2016. A community campaign last year by the Victoria Street Neighbourhood Working Group successfully stopped an impending sale of the house. Macedon Ranges council voted to return the building to the community to be transformed into a hub for residents. Now, the Macedon and Mount Macedon Community House group is trying to raise $43,000 to renovate the building. Committee of management president Samara Hodson said the council would contribute $143,000 to the project. “We’re just hoping that with a show of support from the community, it will show the council that this is something we want and that we want to reopen the house for community use,” she said. Ms Hodson said the group had surveyed residents, asking for suggestions on how to use the house. She said there were no plans to turn the building into another maternal and child health facility. “Some of the ideas have been for playgroups and community gardens, as well as co-working space, classes, art classes, literacy training [and] homework clubs,” she said. “We’ve been working closely with the

council. We are discussing plans with the council oicers. It’s been a really great process.” Ms Hodson said the money raised, together with the council’s contribution, would make the building “it for purpose”. “here has to be disabled toilet access and the house needs to be re-stumped. Young people across the Macedon Ranges are being encouraged to take apply for a youth council to help empower them. he Macedon Youth Council, now in its second year, comprises of 12 young people aged 16-22, to help build a better understanding of government and play a more active role in public life. he council will meet ive times during the year to discuss local issues, learn about the democratic system and how young people can participate in decision-making processes. A visit to Parliament House is also included as part of the council’s activities. Macedon MP Mary-Anne homas said issues raised by 2019’s youth council included local advocacy, single use plastic bags, political apathy, youth mental health and renewable energy. “We are so lucky to have such incredibly talented young people in our community,” she said. “he Macedon Youth Council is a chance for our future leaders to bring their ideas directly to me and to build their skills. “Now more than ever, our young people are crying out to have their voices heard I’m proud to be able to provide young people in our community with a platform and the knowledge to raise issues that are important to them.” Applications close on Sunday, March 29. MY PLACE What is your connection to Sunbury and/or the Macedon Ranges? I irst came to Sunbury in 1972 as a policeman. I spent two years here, I went away for 12 months and then went back to Riddells Creek police station for 25 years. I had bought a block of land in 1967 and had planned to come live here in Sunbury. At the time, I looked at several places and Sunbury was the winner. What are you passionate about? I am passionate about my Nashos – the National Servicemen’s Association of Australia – and that’s probably it right now. I was heavily involved in cricket. I was playing and then umpiring and was president of the GDCA before retirement. I am just passionate about the people in the community and making sure everyone gets looked ater.
Australia Day for the dawn service. But we are getting a bit older and we will be passing the baton to the Sunbury RSL as of 2021. We’ve done the past six dawn services. You’re the president of the Nashos in Sunbury, what do you enjoy most about being a part of the group?

Just seeing the Nashos and our social members have a good time. We go out once a month on a bus trip or we have a couple of times a year we go locally to hotels and clubs. I just want everybody to be happy and have fun and the blokes who did their service to be looked ater. We do look ater each other as best as we can and we do put a fair bit of money into the community as a result of doing sausage sizzles at Bunnings. If there was one thing about Sunbury you could change, what would that be?
How long have you been with Nashos? I joined in 2008, the Sunbury branch … and it was just by chance. he story goes, I was on holidays in Queensland looking ater a mate’s house and I saw this National Serviceman sticker on his caravan and I asked him what it was about. I came home, made some inquiries and the rest is history. Just a group of blokes got together and decided to start a national servicemen group up here in Sunbury. We are responsible for the dawn service and recently we won an award for event of the year on
I think the parking, the parking needs ixing. But that’s a worldwide problem not just a Sunbury problem. What would people be most surprised to know about you? Everybody seems to know more about me than I do. When you have been a local cop and that covers 27 years of my life, you grow up with a lot of people. hey wouldn’t be surprised I barrack for Carlton because they all know that.

Wave bye-bye to fear of the dentist Wouldn’t it be nice to just drift away into relaxed comfort when you’re in the dentist’s chair? That can happen these days through the use of sleep dentistry, a method highly effective for patients – including children – who feel anxious, scared or downright phobic about anything dentist-related.

r Ayman Abdelghany, who runs Advanced Dental Group in Riddells Creek, explains how sleep dentistry works. “If we administer minimal sedation, our patient will be awake but feel no tension or anxiety,” Dr Ayman says. “With moderate sedation, they can speak during the procedure but won’t remember anything later. “Deep sedation puts our patient in an almost unconscious state, although they can be awakened if the need arises. The only sedation deeper is general anaesthetic. “Patients are continuously monitored, with the treating dentist able to adjust levels as required.” Apart from sleep dentistry, the family-focused practice offers a range of services, including general dentistry, wisdom teeth extractions, and cosmetic dentistry and oral surgery. Dr Ayman also advises that eligible children, 17 and under, will be bulk billed under the government dental beneits scheme, and after-hours emergency appointments are available. Principal dentist Dr Aymed, in practice for the past 15 years – four in Riddells Creek – has a special interest in dental implants and wisdom teeth extraction. Steven Power, Primary Care Co-ordinator at Macedon Ranges Health (MRH) believes it’s important to get the message out that the not-for-proit health centre in Gisborne offers a range of subsidies for people of all ages and inancial situations. “People expect a rebate from a GP visit, but are often unaware of the many state and federal subsidies which can cover or reduce the cost of other health care services available to them,” says Mr Power. “One of those subsidies is the Victorian government’s Home and Community Care Package for Younger People. “It provides people who have an injury, short-term health need, chronic illness or are acting as a carer, with affordable services.” Mr Power says that going to a physio for an injured back or seeking advice on weight management from a dietitian can seem inancially out of reach for some. “Depending on a client’s eligibility and need, these subsidies can help cover physio or podiatry treatment, and provide access to dietetics and nutrition advice, in-home nursing and continence nursing, as well as exercise classes. Award-winning not-for-proit MRH also offers allied health such as psychology, occupational therapy, massage, speech therapy and social activities to stay connected.

By Tara Murray Gisborne has been declared the Gisborne and District Cricket Association McIntyre Cup premiers, ater the grand inal was cancelled. he Dragons were due to face Diggers Rest Bulla at the weekend, but the game was called of due to the growing COVID-19 pandemic. he association decided to cancel all grand inals, in line with recommendations from both Cricket Australia and Cricket Victoria. he highest ranked team in each grand inal has been declared premiers, with the Dragons inishing on top ater going through undefeated. Gisborne coach Gavin Mackay said it was a diferent situation and one which probably wouldn’t be seen again. He said it was a diferent feeling to the other premierships everyone had won. “You have to feel for Diggers’ terrible way to lose a inal,” he said. “he GDCA has made a decision, along with Cricket Australia. It’s a hollow feeling and we would have liked to play in the grand inal. “Ater winning 10-15 matches this season, it would have been nice to show it wasn’t a luke.” Mackay said he thought they had been the better team all season, which meant they could sleep comfortably with the decision that had been made. “At the same time, pretty happy and proud for the season that we’ve had,” he said. Mackay said overall they had been really pleased with the season and the development that had come from within the group. he club had continued its focus on the Gisborne skipper Jarryd Vernon. By Tara Murray Sunbury’s premiership dreams were ended when the Victorian Turf Cricket Association cancelled all grand inals last week due to the increasing COVID-19 pandemic. he Roar were just two wickets from getting a irst innings result ater the irst two days in the division 5 grand inal. Ater a lot of discussion about possibly continuing the matches, the association made the call on Wednesday. Both Cricket Australia and Cricket Victoria had recommended the cancellation of matches. he decision means the Roar’s match with Moonee Valley was abandoned. Sunbury had Moonee Valley 8-78 ater making 232. As Moonee Valley inished higher on the ladder, they were awarded the premiership. Sunbury captain-coach Craig Ballinger said they were keen to get out on the ield and inish the match. “We were training on Tuesday night and going to train tonight [hursday] and we held onto hope,” he said. “We hoped the VTCA would hold its ground with professional sports going ahead. “With cricket there is minimal contact. We have no closure as we didn’t win and we haven’t lost.” Ballinger said it was credit to Moonee Valley pair Anthony Cafari and Josh Gorry, who dug in late on day two, and kept their side from collapsing. He said the way the season inished summed up their year. He said they gave it everything they had. “We were two wickets shy of a pretty much guaranteed result,” he said. “We had Sanctuary Lakes at 9-27 when the rain fell [having made 200] and then all the other washouts.” he one positive for the Roar is that they’ve

Football, netball, soccer and basketball leagues are among those that have been postponed for at least a month due to restrictions in place as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. With recommendations for large crowds not to gather together, it let leagues and associations with no choice but to push back seasons. Football and netball leagues will be back in action in May at the earliest. he Western Region and Essendon District football leagues have set May 2 as the earliest return date. hey will reassess the situation on April 14. he Riddell District, Ballarat and Bendigo football netball leagues, along with the NAB League won’t be back until June. he Big V, which had already postponed round one last weekend, is now on hold until at least May 15. he under-18 national championships due to be held in April have been postponed, with no new date set. Originally, Football Victoria state league competitions were going to go ahead as scheduled on the weekend, but Football Australia later changed their stance. All state league competitions have been postponed to April 14. Rugby League and Rugby Union matches have also been postponed.
