A drive-thru coronavirus clinic in Melton West is helping to ease the strain on local health services. The fever clinic opened on March 17 and is running from 9am until 9pm, but is only testing people who meet the set criteria from the Department of Health and Human Services. Djerriwarrh Health chief executive Belinda Scott said more than 350 people were tested in the irst two days the clinic was open. “It’s enabled us to keep our main health services running as normal, while still looking after people who may be worried and meet the criteria to be tested,” Ms Scott said. To qualify for swab testing you have to have travelled overseas in the past 14 days or had close contact with a conirmed COVID-19 case, and also display symptoms of the virus. A call centre has also been set up for those that are unable to drive to the centre, or are concerned. “This [COVID-19] is likely to overwhelm health services in the coming weeks, so we’re doing our part to manage our part of the system,” Ms Scott said. A similar clinic has also opened in Bacchus Marsh.

Virus shuts down region By Ewen McRae Schools have closed and all pubs, clubs, casinos, cinemas, gyms and places of worship have been shut as the state battles the COVID-19 pandemic. he state government announced that essential services would continue to operate, including banks, supermarkets, chemists and service stations. he prime minister on Sunday asked all Australians to cancel non-essential travel. Local business groups last week called on residents to shop local as the impact of the

coronavirus hit hard. With many residents self isolating as the crisis intensiies, small businesses in Melton and Moorabool have been among the most afected, with shopping strips quieter and spending down. BizConnect Moorabool president Ian Prince said while the initial impact of the virus was high spending, the long-term efects were starting to be felt. “My irst thought was that business would thrive as people went bulk buying of stock, but that doesn’t last long,” Mr Prince said.

“Eventually people have spent what they have to, they’ve stocked up, and we end up with a fair downturn. “It’s going to be tough for local business as people stop buying items that aren’t essential.” Mr Prince said he had noticed a considerable drop in foot traic in the town centres, but said it was important for residents to continue to support small business wherever possible. “We’re not set up for a town that could shut down tomorrow, so we have to support our local business,” he said. “If we can support each other through this it will help business, but it

will also help the towns that are going to be doing it tough.” Melton council’s engagement and advocacy manager Sean McManus echoed the shop local message. “Supporting local businesses has an enormous impact on the people who run them, their staf and their families, as well as our local economy,” he said. “Consider shopping online or over the phone at a local business, buy a git card, or order takeaway from your favourite local restaurant.” Melton council on Monday closed all of its community facilities. Maternal and child health services will continue via phone.

Crime rate rises in Melton By Ewen McRae Crime across Melton has risen again according to the latest data. Latest igures from the Crime Statistics Agency showed a 13.1 per cent rise in overall criminal incidences in Melton for the year to December 2019, with thet and criminal damage ofences leading the way. Melton (1506 ofences) and Melton South (1431) were the hardest hit suburbs, however third placed Melton West (1405) saw a drop in ofending. Melton local area commander Zorka Dunstan said the data was a relection of a

- Zorka Dunstan statewide trend. “It’s happening everywhere, we’ve seen an increase in crime across the state,” Inspector Dunstan said. “We’re seeing a lot more people reporting thet through our online portal than we used to, so part of the rise is down to that, and we are deinitely detecting more drug ofences, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing as it means we’re

making more arrests as well. “We also ind that assault and thet ofences oten go hand in hand, and we’ve seen a slow increase in robberies that we’ve dedicated operations towards to try and nip that in the bud.” According to the data, an ofence was nearly three times more likely to occur in a house than on the street, while sexual ofences recorded their lowest numbers since 2017. Inspector Dunstan said growth in the region, as well as changing demographics played a part in ofending as well. “We see with the rising cost of housing in places like Brimbank are pushing people into

these areas and growth is always a consideration with our resourcing,” she said. “We’re always having to be smart with our resources and making sure we are as eicient as possible.” Inspector Dunstan said recent operations targeting thets at gyms as well as another focusing on liquor thet had yielded positive results. For Moorabool, criminal ofences for the December 2019 year were down 9.2 per cent. Bacchus Marsh was the hardest hit area with 570 ofences, however that was an improvement on the previous year. Darley, Ballan and Maddingley also recorded lower crime than the previous year.

Victoria’s upper house has voted to oppose the dumping of contaminated soil near Bacchus Marsh. A motion to oppose the soil dump from Liberal MP David Davis was introduced to the chamber on March 18, and received support from all opposition and cross bench members to win the vote 19 to 15. All Labor Party MPs in the house voted against the motion. “I know that this is an issue that is so close to the heart of many people in Bacchus Marsh,” Mr Davis said. “For a series of reasons this (proposal) is completely unacceptable. It is very close to the town, it is very close to schools … and it is important for people to understand that this site is very near to signiicant agriculture. “he risk of contamination is considerable.” he motion also stated that “proper community consultation and a full environmental assessment has not been undertaken by the West Gate Tunnel Authority, Transurban or other entities associated with the project” and also “that the site of the proposed dump site, near Bacchus Marsh Grammar School and the town centre, makes it inappropriate to foist the transport and dumping of the contaminated soil on the Bacchus Marsh community.” he Maddingley Brown Coal tender for storing the soil is currently with Transurban, who are yet to decide on their preferred site for the soil.

Worksafe are investigating following a death at a Cobblebank property last week. A 52-year-old man died in hospital following an incident in which a circular saw cut into his leg during landscaping works about 9am on March 16. It is believed the labourer was using the saw to cut timber posts when the incident occurred. The fatality bring the number of workplace deaths in Victoria this year to 13, which is seven more than at the same time last year.

Polices have charged a man following a non-fatal shooting in Melton last week. The 27-year-old Melton man has been charged with intentionally causing injury, reckless conduct endangering life and being a prohibited person using a irearm. The charges follow the alleged shooting of a 25-year-old Melton man in the driveway of a property on Faye Street about 4pm on March 16. The victim was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries and police believe the parties are known to each other. A handgun was recovered from an address in Coburns Road, Melton and investigators are not searching for anyone else in relation to the incident

Service hit by coronavirus By Ewen McRae he impact of coronavirus on some of the most vulnerable in the community is starting to be felt. Hope Street Youth and Family Services helps provide emergency accommodation and assistance for those in need locally, and was due to open their irst response youth refuge home next month. Due to the ongoing pandemic, the completion and opening of the refuge has now been postponed.

he purpose-designed refuge will eventually provide short-term 24/7 crisis accommodation and wrap-around support to 100 young people and young families each year. Hope Street chief executive Donna Bennett said they would continue to operate on their current model to help locals in need. “Our team in Melton continues to operate an interim refuge model utilising two private rental properties, providing crisis accommodation and 24/7 wrap around support to young people and young families who are experiencing homelessness,” Ms Bennett said.

“We know this news will come as a disappointment to the many incredible partners and community members who have contributed to get this project of the ground. “However we also know that, at this unprecedented moment in time, our top priorities are the continuation of services to our clients as well as protecting one another and especially those most vulnerable in our community.” Meanwhile, the state government last week announced a $6 million funding package for homelessness organisations impacted by the

coronavirus pandemic. he funding is designed to help organisations like Hope Street get people back on their feet, or ind temporary housing during the crisis. he government also announced alternative pop-up accommodation will be established for homeless people requiring quarantine or self-isolation in Melbourne. “he COVID-19 pandemic is going to have wide-ranging impacts across our community, but those experiencing homelessness who have nowhere else to go, will be hit particularly hard,” Housing Minister Richard Wynne said.

Sign for the future Visitors to Rockbank station are now getting a more colourful welcome, with the unveiling of a mosaic sign last week. he work of artist Stavroula Gouros, the sign includes local volcanic rocks as well as indigenous art designed by a local Aboriginal elder which draws on both past and present aspects of the community. “All of the tiles have a meaning for Rockbank,” Gouros said. “We focused on the past, present and future for this, and I’m so honoured to be a part of this. To see it here ater all the hard work of the community is just fantastic.” Among the images depicted are a ram (for the local football club), local wildlife, a lion (for the lion park that used to exist in the area) and, of course, a train. More than 200 locals participated in surveys and community discussions and workshops about the sign, with more than 80 directly involved in its creation.

Panic buying lushed with issues

By Ewen McRae Moorabool council has called for decisions on three major potential projects to be put of, in light of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Moorabool mayor David Edwards said it was impossible for proper public consultation to occur during this time and it would be unfair for decisions to be made without adequate input from the local community. Major projects currently being considered for the region include Maddingley Brown Coal’s tender to accept contaminated soil from the West Gate Tunnel project; the potential amalgamation of Djerriwarrh Health Services and Western Health; and a proposal to build a high voltage transmission line across the shire. Council said public consultation on the high voltage transmission line was to begin last week and a decision to award the contract to store the contaminated soil is imminent. “Given the State-of-Emergency declared by Premier Daniel Andrews, the Victorian government and other decision-makers should hit the pause button until the situation allows for proper community consultation to occur,” Cr Edwards said. “he priority for our residents at this time must be protecting the health and wellbeing of themselves and their loved ones. “To ask them to also consider the impacts of contaminated soil, giant transmission towers and potential local job losses due to a health merger, is expecting too much of our community.” Meanwhile, Moorabool council has closed a number of buildings and services to try and slow the spread of the virus. Among the closures are libraries in Darley and Ballan, occasional care, Darley Early Years Hub, senior citizens centres, Bacchus Marsh

Leisure Centre, and the Bacchus Marsh visitor information centre. Maternal child health, immunisations, meals on wheels, and waste collection will still occur as normal. Council chief executive Derek Madden urged residents to stay up to date on the latest

information surrounding the virus. “he measures we are putting in place, we believe, are essential to slowing the spread of the virus,” Mr Madden said. “We refer anyone with concerns around COVID-19 to the Health and Human Services departmental website: www.dhhs.vic.gov.au/coronavirus.”

Western Water has reminded its customers that toilet paper is the only kind of paper that should be lushed. Panic buying triggered by the COVID-19 pandemic has stripped many supermarket shelves of toilet paper and people have stocked up on tissues, paper towel and baby wipes as alternatives. However Western Water acting chief operating oicer Paul Clark said those products are not designed for their sewerage systems and could lead to sewer spills. “Toilet paper is the only product that is designed to break down properly in our sewerage network,” Mr Clark said. “Paper towels, tissues and wipes don’t disintegrate the same way as toilet paper and can get stuck in the pipes or cause fatbergs to form in the pipes. “his can lead to sewer spills in the home or in public spaces, like parks and waterways.” Western Water also said customers should avoid ‘lushable’ wipes as there is no current Australian industry standard that provides criteria to manufacturers on how to make them compatible with our sewer systems. “While we wait for the development of a nationally agreed standard, our advice is to play it safe and only lush the three P’s – Pee, Poo and [Toilet] Paper”, said Mr Clark. New focus on farm crime

By Ewen McRae Beck Nixon had almost inished her move away from her Rockbank home when she got a call she never expected. Ms Nixon, who had lived at her Rockbank property for 20 years, has moved to Ulupna Island, near Strathmerton, but had let her three pet cows behind for one extra week while transport was arranged for them. Earlier this month she got a call to say they had been stolen from their paddock. “My nephew was looking ater them for me, and noticed they were missing when he went to feed them,” Ms Nixon said. “I was hoping they might have just gotten out somehow, but we found the boundary fence had been cut, and a makeshit race had been let behind, and it looked like the cows had been really roughed up looking at the pawing marks on the ground. “I’ve been looking for them ever since, but we’ve had no leads and police haven’t found anything since.” With all three cows quite large, Ms Nixon estimated they could be worth up to $2000 each. he three animals – Daisy (black and white friesian cow), Miralda (black angus cross), and Delilah (red angus) – have been Ms Nixon’s pets since they were just weeks old, and hold a special place in her family. “My mum bought Daisy for us initially, and I really liked Delilah, who Miralda was always following around, so I took both of them,” she said. “Both Miralda and Delilah ended up getting quite sick early, we didn’t think they’d make it, but we bottle reared them from the time they were a week old and they pulled through. “hey’re just really friendly cows, and they

mean everything to me. We never wanted to sell them and always hoped to take them to calf, so it’s not about money. “hey’re like my kids, fantastic family pets and I miss them dearly.”

Ms Nixon urged anyone with information to contact Caroline Springs Police or Crime Stoppers. Ms Nixon said they were taken between March 5 and 8 from Iramoo Circuit in Rockbank.

Farm crime is the focus of a new Crime Stoppers campaign, with locals reminded to stay vigilant. he ‘Locals Get Vocal’ campaign is run in partnership with Victoria Police and the Victorian Farmers Federation, and targets criminal activity on Victorian farms, predominantly thet. According to Crime Stoppers, farms are a target for criminals, with ofences ranging from illegal hunting to the thet of stock, equipment, irearms and diesel. Crime Stoppers chief executive Stella Smith said the crimes afected farmers as well as their communities. “Rural crime is having a signiicant impact on farm owners and towns where this type of criminal activity is taking place,” Ms Smith said. “It hurts the victim’s hip pocket which afects how much they have to spend in their community. his crime is not isolated to one or two geographical regions, we are receiving reports of this taking place statewide. “We urge locals to get vocal to help stop the crime in regional Victoria.” Ms Smith said it was important for the community to report all crimes and help police. “Local knowledge also can be highly efective in identifying perpetrators of these crimes as locals may have a better idea of suspicious behaviour taking place in your local region than anyone else.” Ewen McRae

Plea for urgent road upgrade By Alesha Capone Hundreds of people have thrown their support behind a petition calling for the upgrade of a “dangerous” road which runs between the Melton and Wyndham. he Change.org petition, which is calling for action on Troups Road South, has been signed by more than 710 people. A resident who has lived on Troups Road South for about 30 years, Michelle (who asked for her surname to be withheld), started the petition and a Facebook page called the Troups

Road South Action Page. he petition states: “he current condition of the road is extremely dangerous as there are dust plumes that are generated by vehicles which causes traic to be blinded. It’s like playing Russian Roulette in your car. “Also, the gravel topping means that vehicles are losing control, with accidents occurring on a daily basis.” Michelle said that within the past ive years, the amount of traic using Troups Road South – which runs between Boundary Road and Greigs Road – had increased signiicantly,

including heavy articulated vehicles and commercial vehicles. Michelle said Troups Road South was also used as a detour whenever Hopkins Road was closed. She said residents were lobbying for the Troups Road South speed limit to be lowered from 80km/h to 60km/h and for the road to be sealed. “he dust isn’t settling, it’s getting worse – when it rains, it becomes a pothole-ridden road,” she said. Michelle said she worried about the safety of her two sons, who are on their P-plates, while

driving on the road. “If we didn’t live on the road, I would tell them to avoid it at all costs,” she said. Melton council’s manager of engineering services, Sam Romaszko, said: “he upgrade of Troups Road South to a sealed rural road standard is a priority for council. “It’s included in our long-term capital works program and has been referred to the 2020-21 budget for funding consideration. “Council will continue to maintain Troups Road South in accordance with our Road Management Plan.”

ince opening her cafe ive months ago, Rebecca – and her family who helps her – has won many fans with her lavish spread of continental cakes and pastries, but there’s other deliciousness to discover at That’s Amore Café as well. Add to that one of our constantly praised gelati choices, or a refreshing sorbet, and that’s a mighty tempting feast. “We have dairy-based ice cream, too, for the traditionalists – and usually the kids, who love choosing their favourite lavour.” Once you’ve sampled the café’s treats, you’re going to want one of those cakes or other dolci to be the star at your next get-together. Continental cakes just have that touch more sophistication, but even kids can like them. Or just cheekily save it all for the grown-ups, is Rebecca’s advice. Business has ‘grown up’ with town Ken Morton and Melton Timber have been a mainstay of the town for decades, with last year marking 50 years since Ken irst started trading.

hat began as a small cabinet-making business in 1969, Melton Home Timber and Hardware is now a success story that has grown with the township, with Ken and his sons bringing up their milestone in style. “I originally started in the garage of my parents’ house, that’s where all this started,” Ken said. “The neighbours started to complain about the noise, so I had to ind somewhere to go. “The council said if I was going to do this sort of work it had to be in an industrial area, which there wasn’t one in Melton back then … So when I bought this place it was the start of this industrial precinct.” While the early years of the business had Ken largely making cabinets, the demand for timber in the fast-growing region enabled him to expand his business, soon growing to the large site he occupies today. “I got asked too many times about timber, so it made sense to expand,” he said. “There was a hardware shop in the main street, they were our neighbours so we didn’t want to upset them too much, but they soon retired so it was just us. “The town has changed a lot, and we’ve grown with it. It’s been a great town for us, and while we’ve had some tough times, like all businesses, the town has always been there for us.” Ken and Bob Kirby (42 years service) ran much of the business themselves for years, with sons Brad and Scott also coming on

board when they got older. “I don’t think that was ever the plan, but it’s been nice how it’s worked out,” Ken said. “All of our kids had the chance to go to uni and I don’t think they ever thought they’d be doing this, but the boys – Scott and Brad – have now been working here for 23 and 27 years respectively, which has been beneicial.” As Melton grew, Ken was often at the forefront, serving on several committees and always willing to assist in many different parts of the town. “We’ve always been community-minded. I sat on the irst Melton Business Association committee, which lasted for a long time and did some really good things. “I was chairman of the building committee for Mowbray College, so we took a lot of pride in that school and seeing it grow. Those things really helped bring people into Melton, which meant more jobs in the town, which was the real name of the game.” While Ken is less hands-on these days, he takes great pride in seeing the next generation continue the legacy he’s built over the past ive decades. “We’ve now got grandsons, who are 16 and 13, who say that they’ll run it eventually, so we’ll wait and see, but it could stay in the family for a long time yet.”

Eynesbury has claimed its irst Gisborne and District Cricket Association premiership, albeit in unusual circumstances. he Eagles were due to face Romsey in the Jensen Shield grand inal at the weekend, but all matches were cancelled due to the growing COVID-19 pandemic. he association decided to cancel all grand inals on recommendation from both Cricket Australia and Cricket Victoria. he highest ranked team in each grand inal has been declared premiers, which in this case was Eynesbury. Eagles captain-coach Tristian Francis said for the side it was a rags to riches story. “Going from being the whipping boys in the Johnstone Shield to inishing second in the Jensen Shield,” he said. “We then somehow get a home grand inal and then are told two days later we are the premiers. “I don’t know how to feel, it’s bittersweet.” Francis said normally you play in a grand inal and then you get to celebrate accordingly, but in this case they don’t even know if they should all get together. He said everyone was excited but at the same time confused by it all. He said they would rather have won the premiership having played in a grand inal. “I really feel for Diggers Rest, who were the minor premiers,” he said. “Had this happened four days earlier, they are the premiers. hey were the best team in the competition, having lost one game during the regular season and they beat us twice.” Francis said while the premiership is nice, for the club it was much more about making it an enjoyable place to be ater a tough year the

Darley has won its irst Ballarat Cricket Association irst grade premiership ater one of the more stranger weeks in local cricket. he Lions, who went through the season undefeated, were awarded the premiership ater the grand inal was cancelled due to the growing COVID-19 pandemic. For much of last week, the grand inal looked set to go ahead, albeit shortened from four days to two. Despite Cricket Victoria and Cricket Australia recommending that all local cricket be cancelled, the BCA was set to play all of its grand inals. Ater receiving more information, the association made the call to cancel the grand inals on Wednesday night. Lions coach Brian Wheelahan said while they would have preferred to win the premiership on ield, it was well deserved. He said they were pushing for the grand inal to be played. “We have created history as we had never won a premiership in the BCA competition,” he said. “We couldn’t have done any more and we were conident that we could have got the job done and gone through undefeated. “No one wants to win it this way. I’ve been picturing the winning runs being hit or that last wicket being taken. “here’s mixed emotions.” Wheelahan said there was a nervous wait while the BCA made its decision and conirmed that they would be awarded the premiership. Once that came through on hursday aternoon, his phone rang of the hook. Wheelahan said they were conident that things would go in their favour. “We worked tirelessly on and of the ield and
