It’s something I’ve never felt before.

Broman from front

you are a good leader, and I like to achieve respect from those I lead and others around me.

Tell us about the athletics and activities you are involved in at SRRHS. I am involved in volleyball, basketball, and track and field. I enjoy being part of a team and having connectivity with others my age. Working together to achieve a common goal through athletics teaches a person to support those you work with. Activities I’m a part of include Storm Leaders, Minnesota Honor Society, Storm Buddies and Green Team. I enjoy participating in these activities because I need to teach and encourage others which allows me to obtain skills to become a better leader.

Does being a leader come naturally to you, or is it something you have had to work on? I feel being a leader comes naturally for me with past experiences and a proper foundation. Yet, there is always room for improvement in being a leader, so I continue to work on improving my leadership skills.

What type of leadership roles do you have in the community? I volunteer at the humane society and went on a mission trip to Mexico over the summer with my youth group. I enjoy helping the animals at the humane society find homes, and I was honored to construct homes for two families in Mexico. Why is being a leader important to you? Being a leader is important to me because I can influence those I am teaching and direct them in a positive way so they will succeed. Respect is appreciated and expected when

Janorschke from front Tell us about the athletics and activities you are involved in at SRRHS. I would have surprised my younger self with my shift from sports to other activities. I try to involve myself in every type of band opportunity like pep band, marching band and jazz band, but I also tried math league for the first time and am really enjoying it. What type of leadership roles do you have in the community? A lot of my leadership comes from band where I am the junior representative on the band council and the low brass section leader in marching band. In other classes, I don’t have any designated leadership role, but many people tend to follow my lead. Why is being a leader important to you? I like being a leader because it gives me a chance to form the world around me to what I want it to be. If I work hard and to a high standard, those who follow me will do the same, and world will be a better place because of it. Does being a leader come naturally to you, or is it something you have had to work on? I’ve always had groups form around me, but I had to learn to guide those groups in the right direction. I went from having a group

Living or dead, local or international, name one leader you look up to and tell us what you have learned from that person. I look up to Abraham Lincoln because of his ability to persevere through hard times and his ability to make difficult decisions. He came up with compromises that benefitted both sides. Being a great leader includes seeing and understanding both sides of an argument and being flexible when making a decision on how to proceed, like Lincoln. As a member of the school and community, what is one thing you would change if you had the power? I would put more effort into supporting local businesses. I would push to have athletic teams receive their apparel from local businesses to support the community.

around me that I would get in trouble with to having a group that looks up to me and is willing to follow my lead for the better of everyone. Living or dead, local or international, name one leader you look up to and tell us what you have learned from that person. Surprisingly, it would have to be the section leader I had in my first high school marching band season, Nathan. He showed me aspects of leadership I hadn’t previously thought of. He didn’t only lead others to where he wanted to be, he helped them get there and enjoy the journey if they were struggling. He also made leading seem easy as I never felt like I was forced to follow him, but that I was just coming along with him as a friend. I have been trying to do the same thing anytime I lead now. As a member of the school and community, what is one thing you would change if you had the power? I wish people would try new activities. Many activities seem to slowly be losing members, and it would be sad to lose an activity that could be really fun. I had always brushed off math league as something that was too nerdy or awkward for even me, but after joining this year, I wish I would have started earlier. I think other people would realize the same thing if only they stepped out of their comfort zone and tried.

the re ghters of what the role entailed prior to the technology of today. Schlichting explained re numbers and how rather than GPS, re ghters had a card system. When a call came in, re ghters matched a re number to a card on le at the hall that gave directions to the address. Schlichting said re ghters who were also milk haulers were bene cial to the department as they traveled area routes and knew locations of rural properties. In addition to the history of equipment and trucks, Schlichting reviewed fundraisers, events and how the department began its equipment fund which remains strong today. But, perhaps the most poignant moment was Schlichting’s gratitude for the re ghters and families keeping the 30-member department strong today. He said he was proud of the members and

commended re departments for pivoting and pushing ahead. “Great work comes from the re service, and the re service always rises to the occasion,” Swenson said.

Included in the 228 calls are false alarms, canceled or good intent calls, situations such as gas leaks and downed power lines, and motor vehicle accident responses as well as res, of which 13 were structure res. The department celebrated four retirements at the event, honoring the mens’ years of service with their helmet and a plaque. Retiring in 2020 were Mike Golembeski (34 years on the department), Rob Calhoun (24 years) and Dan Cote (20 years). Wayne Seward, not present, retired with 24 years on the department in 2021. Prior to the awards and honors, two speakers treated the group to a few words. Dennis “Jock” Schlichting, who served as SRFD re chief from 1978-90 and was a re ghter beginning in 1962, recapped some of the history of the 114-year-old department and educated

You leave your job, you leave your wife anytime no matter what’s going on. When the alarm sounds, you have to go.” Amanda Swenson, chief deputy state re marshal, reminded the re ghters of their importance and their resilience. Swenson, who has been in the re service for 12 years, was hit with numerous hurdles in her rst years at the Minnesota State Fire Marshal Division – from the Northern Metals re, the coronavirus pandemic, civil unrest to exceptional drought.
