Goodbye to brick and mortar The Outpost Mercantile to close July 29 BY BEN SONNEK | STAFF WRITER

For nearly nine years, The Outpost Mercantile has offered locals and visitors a wide range of natural products, inviting people with their sign on Main Street and their location off the Lake Wobegon Trail in Sauk Centre. Ron and Sue Meyer have decided to close the Outpost July 29 as they prepare to move to Florida and dedicate more time to broader-reaching homeopathic work, although they plan to be frequent visitors to their Minnesotan friends and family. “It was a hard decision because we have such wonderful customers,” Sue said. “It’s what’s going to be best for our family at this time.” Ron and Sue founded The Outpost Mercantile Sept. 8, 2014, after Ron lost his job and wanted to run a smaller vacation-type store. Around the same time, Sue had grown an interest in homeopathy and earned a degree in naturop-

Jacob Holck reads his opening prayer for the Minnesota Senate May 10 at the Minnesota Capitol in St. Paul. Holck has served as chaplain for both the Minnesota House and Senate, starting with the House in 2022.

Holck serves as chaplain for state House, Senate BY BEN SONNEK | STAFF WRITER

Politics and policymaking have long been an interest of Jacob Holck, pastor of United Methodist Church in Sauk Centre and Grey Eagle. Thanks to his service as a chaplain for the Minnesota House and Senate, he has been able to get an up-close perspective on the state’s legislative process as well as the legislators themselves. “I preach every Sunday to my congregations, but this, you’re in the Capitol,” Holck said. “Both chambers are absolutely gorgeous, magnificent, and the legislators are there; these are people who’ve been elected by the people of Minnesota. They have the authority to do these things, and you’re just this pastor serving Sauk Centre and Grey Eagle. It’s a little nerve-wracking, but they’re kind people.” The Capitol used to have formally appointed annual chaplains, but nowadays, state legislators select their guest chaplains; Holck’s uncle, David Webster, a Lutheran pastor, had previously been a chaplain at the Capitol. Holck recently moved to Sauk Centre, but when he lived in Paynesville, District 13A Representative Lisa Demuth, now the Minnesota House minority leader, put in Holck’s name for House chaplain. He accepted and served in that role in 2022, and after that, District 13 Senator Jeff Howe put in Holck’s name to be a Senate chaplain, and Holck accepted when he was contacted by the senate secretary.

Going green on the greens and residential members with their electrification Lynx is proving ground needs into the future,” said John Pantzke, SEA business development representative. “Additionally, we anticipate the data will benefit Mean Green Electric for electric lawnmower Mowers, too.” BY BEN SONNEK | STAFF WRITER

Cutting the greens is going green at Lynx National Golf Course south of Sauk Centre. Stearns Electric Association, partnering with their wholesale power provider Great River Energy, has leased an electric lawnmower to the golf course for the summer to learn more about its energy usage, charge time, mowing capability and more. “This local, real-time data and end-user feedback will benefit us as we help other commercial

The lawnmower is a Mean Green Machine EVO mower, with a 74-inch cutting width, a 13 mph top speed, a 37 horsepower equivalent and a lithium battery fixed to the machine that can last up to eight hours on a single charge. It features a touchscreen display with a passcode and administrator mode, so it needs no keys and can be started with a button. With its low center of gravity – the battery being only eight inches above the ground – the EVO is stable on slopes of up to 20 degrees.
