Historic farming equipment from the founding family of Keilor’s market gardens has been donated to the Keilor Historical Society. The Milburn family, who began Keilor’s market gardening tradition when David Milburn settled in the valley in 1857, recently donated a range of farming tools and artefacts that date back to early farming operations. Also included in the donation was an impressive cast iron sewing machine which would have been used to sow bags. The historical society’s Fred Ackerman said family was in the process of selling its property, known as The Grange, and wanted artefacts stored in its shed to be preserved. Mr Ackerman said family matriarch, Dorothy Milburn, was particularly keen for the historic items to kept for prosperity. He said the tools were a very important addition to the society’s collection. “Keilor Historical Society seek to preserve and promote the heritage of the market gardens,” he said. “David Milburn was the first one to undertake irrigation of farmland in Victoria.” Details: keilorhistoricalsociety.org.au
Businesses close By Tara Murray Nine properties have been acquired near Sunshine train station as part of the construction of Melbourne Airport Rail. The acquisition of properties will help make space for the new Sunshine Superhub, which will feature two new regional platforms, new tracks, an extended concourse, new western forecourt and a new access road into the station car park. As work progresses on the first stage of the rail link, several businesses have closed their doors for the final time. Dragon Express and Dum Matka Sunshine both announced on social media
that they are closing after their properties were acquired as part of Melbourne Airport Rail link Both finished trading on 24 May and were based in a strip of shops on City Place near the entrance to the station. Dragon Express had been open for 15 years. “As part of the Melbourne Airport Rail development, our location has been selected to support this important project,” Dragon Express said on social media. “From the bottom of our hearts, we are incredibly grateful for the support, loyalty and memories shared with us over the years.” Dum Matka said in a comment on its post
that it was searching for a new location. It had been open for nearly eight years. Star Weekly understands that seven commercial properties on City Place have been acquired along with two vacant properties on Sun Crescent as part of the Melbourne Airport Rail Link. The project team is also in discussions with one business leasing VicTrack land along Hampshire Road. Compensation for affected property owners and impacted parties will be determined in accordance with the Major Transport Projects Facilitation Act 2009 and the Land Acquisition and Compensation Act 1986, and based on independent valuations
by the Valuer-General Victoria. Star Weekly understands that no residential properties are being acquired as part of the Sunshine Superhub works, and no private residential or commercial properties are being acquired to build the new Albion station. A Melbourne Airport Rail spokesperson said the acquisitions were necessary to make space for the new Sunshine Superhub. “Property acquisition is never taken lightly, and we are working closely with the property and business owners to minimise impacts and provide support throughout the acquisition process,“ the spokesperson said.
