Culture rebuild delivers success By Steve Linnell A major cultural rebuild at Cooroy Gymnastics is paying dividends, with the club producing historic results at the 2026 Senior WAG State Championships. After several challenging years, the club has undergone significant change in 2026, including a new leadership structure, stronger governance, a renewed committee and a complete shift in coaching direction and club culture. Club leaders told Noosa Today the focus this year has been on rebuilding stability, professionalism and trust across the organisation. Continued page 14
Vandalism fight By Steve Linnell Noosa Council says repeated vandalism by youths at the sand recycling intake jetty near the Spit has forced the shutdown of electricity to the site and prompted calls for police assistance. According to Council, the gate at the jetty has been targeted for more than six months, with repeated attempts to secure the area ending in further damage. Public Realm Infrastructure Manager Craig Young said the ongoing destruction of public infrastructure was frustrating and costly for the community. “Youths repeatedly destroying public facilities is frustrating and has a significant cost impact on the community,” Mr Young said.
“Attempts to secure the gate have resulted in further vandalism shortly after installation.” Council says reports indicate young people have continued accessing the restricted area by damaging the gate, climbing up from the water and scaling fencing surrounding the site. As a result of the repeated break-ins and damage, electricity to the jetty infrastructure has now been switched off. Mr Young said Council was also seeking support from Queensland Police to move unauthorised people away from the jetty. “A new fence completely surrounding the jetty equipment is on order, however, there have been delays from the contractor, due to inability to source materials,” he said.
Council confirmed a replacement fence had been ordered, but installation had been delayed because contractors had been unable to source the necessary materials. Noosa resident Ray Giddins says he has been raising concerns about unsafe access at the sand recycling intake jetty for more than seven months, but claims little has been done to address the issue. Mr Giddins said children were regularly gaining access through the damaged gate and climbing around the restricted area, creating what he believes is a serious safety hazard. “Kids have been getting access through that gate. Kids could be killed. It’s dangerous,” he said. “They need to make it safe.”
He said children were also climbing underneath the platform to gain entry to the jetty, before jumping from the handrails into the river. “It’s so unsafe. Kids get up on the handrail and jump. They could easily slip and fall on the concrete,” Mr Giddins said. Mr Giddins said he had repeatedly contacted Council and even emailed Mayor Frank Wilkie, urging authorities to secure the site by adding an extra chain and lock at the bottom of the gate. “All they need to do is put a lock and chain at the bottom, but they haven’t even done that,” he said. “I’ve contacted the Council so many times. It really makes me angry that nothing has been done. I walk past it every day and I’ll take this further. It’s been a safety hazard for seven months.”
