Stepping towards wellbeing THIS weekend sees the culmination of both Botanic Gardens Week – and Volunteers Week. And that has particularly focused the spotlight on one volunteer group involved with both annual events: the Friends of Noosa Botanic Gardens (FNBG), who are celebrating in conjunction with Noosa Council. The 120-strong Friends group can be found each Thursday morning tending the eighthectare gardens with loving care – and some of their numbers will be on hand this weekend to assist with some of the events happening at the gardens. The main activity will be a one-hour Autumn Guided Walk through the gardens on Sunday from 8.30am to view some of the highlights for this time of year – which are surprisingly more than one might expect in the cooler months. Houseboats stay By Margie Maccoll A number of live-aboard houseboat owners on Noosa River have signed five-year contracts with Sovereign Native Tribes of the Kabi First Nation Elders with the understanding the contracts will enable them to remain living on their boats as guardians of the river. Maritime Safety Queensland (MSQ) has told boat owners, under Queensland marine safety laws, as part of the implementation of the Noosa River Management Plan which began in 2023,
from 1 January 2026, vessels over 5 metres in length, which do not have registered moorings, will be limited to a maximum of 28 days anchoring per financial year across the Noosa River and adjoining waters. An MSQ spokesperson said most vessel owners have complied with the new 28-day anchoring regulations for the Noosa River, introduced on 1 January. “Maritime Safety Queensland (MSQ) is working with those yet to comply and is aware of claims that some owners have received “contracts” from
a group claiming to represent traditional owners, allowing extended anchoring,” the spokesperson said. “MSQ has not sighted formal documentation and reminds all vessel owners that private agreements do not override Queensland marine safety laws or the Noosa River restrictions. “MSQ will continue monitoring compliance to ensure safe and fair use of the river for the entire community.” Since the laws were introduced on 1 January
some liveaboard boat owners including Sally Hayes have sought an alternative solution. “I went and sat with the Kabi people (Sovereign Native Tribes of the Kabi First Nation), the traditional owners here. It was their understanding the river was for everyone not just for a select few. They didn’t like the fact a certain group of people were being targeted,” she said. “They offered us contracts for staying on the river.” Continued page 6
