ART SPACE CELEBRATES 2 YEARS KINGSCOTE
A
Little Art Space in Kingscote recently marked its second anniversary. Kingscote’s newest little arts venue was born in 2024 after Fine Art KI closed. In a novel collaboration two artists and a curator joined forces to operate their respective businesses from the single shared space on Dauncey Street. For the visitor it is a seamless presentation of intriguing art forms, local creations, handmade gifts and authentic KI keepsakes across all price points - always with a warm welcome from one of the three founders. Patti Blucher of By Blu, has lived on KI all her life, previously exhibiting 12 times with the Kangaroo Island exhibitions for SALA at National Wine Centre. Patti is at heart a maker and a multi-disciplinary artist. She specialises in unique sterling silver and salvaged metal jewellery and conveys heartfelt moments of island life into vivid paintings, some which feature on seasonal clothing and printed textiles. She takes her inspiration from the natural world, her sense of place and an abiding environmental connection. Patti’s innate creativity can also be seen 24/7 on the front window of A little Art Space.
Her constantly changing window art is a living storybook of Kangaroo Island’s seasons and spirit in hand drawn wonder. Jane Anders has been beachcombing on the island since her retirement in 2014, collecting sea glass, vintage pottery shards, and various found objects. After six years of gathering these into a vast collection, she
began incorporating them into artwork, leading to the creation of Kangaroo Island Tidal Treasures. Whimsical pictures and mandalas are assembled from sea glass and ceramic shards as found, shaped by mother nature and crafted with imagination and love. Tidal Treasures are collected worldwide as meaningful mementos and gifts, attracting
visitors who are enthralled by the island’s history and provenance of some of the pieces. Jane started her journey at the Penneshaw markets and is delighted to now be regularly located within A little Art Space. Curator Fleur Peters of Art By Design KI represents silversmith husband Fred Peters and showcases an outstanding selection of original artworks; including sculpture, textiles and glass, by other well-known island and SA artists. With 18 years as a Gallerista, Fleur has presented more than 100 art events on island, and 13 mainland shows in Adelaide. She knows the island’s artists personally and has a depth and breadth of knowledge of the local art scene. Her portfolio includes the re-selling of exciting island produced artworks spanning 30 years. Since opening, A little Art Space’s collaboration between its makers and curator has resulted in a unique gallery. Visitors and locals have responded enthusiastically, especially appreciating the affordable, authentic Kangaroo Island art on display. We are open even when we’re closed. ENNESHAW IGA is a one stop shop for islanders and visitors alike, being open from 8am until 8pm every day, and literally one minute from the ferry. It has gone through a huge transformation since owners Sue and Mark McLeay took over the store in 2017, culminating in a complete refurbishment late last year. It offers a great range of products including groceries, giftware, barbecue needs, beach and outdoor items, homewares, hardware, and souvenirs. It also has a comprehensive range of local and SA produce and is always looking to source new lines from local producers. Sue and Mark find their click and collect service to be popular with time-poor residents and visitors alike. The service makes it easier for customers to pre order and collect their shopping on their way through Penneshaw. It could be locals short on time or holiday makers wanting to collect their groceries on arrival, Sue said. “The new rewards program offers extra discounts and cash back to card holders, another initiative to reward our regular IGA shoppers.” Penneshaw IGA has become an integral part of the Island community. PLACE where couples, friends and family can enjoy a quiet drink, a tasting paddle and delicious food, False Cape Wines is the cellar door for every occasion. Julie and Jamie Helyar have created an ambience and experience where people of all ages can kick back and enjoy. “Our cellar door is like driving into an Australian oasis that is surrounded by gum trees, gardens, and vineyards on the picturesque Willson River,” Julie said. “Visitors can immerse themselves in the natural surroundings and truly relax from the stresses of daily life. “Our favourite thing about the cellar door is the visitor’s smiles and appreciation as they enjoy a few hours of the simple things in life - good wine, food, nature and friends.” The use of limestone and recycled timber creates a fantastic relaxed atmosphere. There is a large deck, lawn areas, kids playground, farm animals, basketball backboard, shaded areas, plus indoor and outdoor wood fires, making it the ideal family destination all year round.
Originally a teacher and shearer, the Helyars had family connections to Lake Breeze Wines, located at Langhorne Creek, who encouraged them to start their vineyard. “We take pride in showcasing premium, authentic Kangaroo Island wines where the grapes are all dry grown, only relying on rainfall,” Julie said. “This ensures intense flavours and colours in our wines.” For more than 20 years, the
winery has been producing incredible wines to the highest standard. Their recent vintages rates over 90 points by James Halliday, with their cabernet merlot, cabernet sauvignon and riesling all scoring 94 points. Their brother and brotherin-law, Greg Follett, who is an award winning winemaker, has taken the Kangaroo Island cool climate grapes and handcrafted them into a fantastic selection of premium wines. False Cape Cellar Door came
to fruition to showcase the wines as well as their beautiful location on the Dudley Peninsula. Off the grid and completely relying on solar power, Julie said that there is also limited mobile reception, which they love. “It’s phones down, which creates conversation and laughter instead,” she said. actus Kangaroo Island is a friendly and vibrant cafe located in the heart of Kingscote. The cafe and restaurant, located on Dauncey Street, offers lots of indoor and alfresco seating. We pride ourselves on our friendly service, menus filled with simple fresh options, house made cakes and great fair-trade coffee. Fresh pressed juices and a large selection of local wines,
cider and craft beer are also available. Cactus was founded by Yen Leow, and Louis Lark – who met working at Southern Ocean Lodge and became friends through a shared passion of enjoying great food. The concept of Cactus was born through a desire to enhance the Island’s food scene and bring a taste of city cafe culture to KI. lifford’s Honey Farm started its journey as one of Kangaroo Island’s pioneer tourism businesses 33 years ago. It all started when local tour guide Anna Howard brought visitors on her Odyssey 4WD tours to the farm down Elsegood Road at Haines. David Clifford would set up a table with honey near the house and tell the tourists the story of how Ligurian bees made it to the island. Since then the Cliffords have added an office and a honey packing room to the building and now serve more than 200 honey ice-creams on a busy day. They offer food, drinks and locally made art and food products, their own Drunken Drone Honey Wheat Ale, and artwork and products from local artists, including prints, pottery
and silver jewellery. Over the years, the shop has played host to a multitude of travel program presenters and celebrity chefs. The family has grown and the six grandchildren have also worked in the shop, alongside the other locals, so it’s a real family enterprise. Dave and Jenny along with their daughters, grandchildren and local staff are happy to share their knowledge and love of honey with you. SWEEPING VIEWS AT DUDLEY PENNESHAW
E
xperience the essence of Kangaroo Island at Dudley Wines. Sweeping cliff top views surround you as you sample Dudley’s fine Kangaroo Island wines accompanied by gourmet pizzas and platters. There’s a nature play area with plenty of space for young ones to run around. Try your hand at “golf across the gully”, an opportunity to practise your golf skills for the young ones and young at heart! Dudley Wines is run and owned by Jeff and Val Howard, their three children and their families. The Howard family’s history on Kangaroo Island dates back more than 140 years. In the 1960s, Jeff, a fourth generation ‘Islander’, purchased a block, known as Porky Flat, on the south coast of the Peninsula, which he gradually turned into a successful merino sheep and cattle farm. With the collapse of the wool industry in the early 1990s, Jeff
planted vines as an experiment, and made their first red wine in part of the old shearing shed. They named it “Shearing Shed Red” and it was purely for their own use. The following year they made their first commercial vintage wine, and Dudley Wines grew from there. Dudley Wines’ vineyard is in a beautiful valley at Porky Flat. The vines are dry-grown and thrive in the rich limestone soils. The fresh Southern Ocean breezes ensure a slow ripening season, leading to enhanced fruit concentration. About 30 per cent of the property is still untouched native bushland and it is the isolated nature, and the pristine surrounds of the vineyard that contribute to the unique characteristics of Dudley’s Wines. Jeff’s son Brodie took over the role of winemaker in 2000. Being the owner/winemaker for over 20 years has given him the freedom to explore many techniques and develop his own winemaking style. His range of wines are diverse, and carefully crafted
to capture and emphasise the abundant fruit characteristics presented by the Island’s terroir. Dudley Wines are proud to produce a 100 per cent Kangaroo Island product, grown and handcrafted just 15km from the cellar door. It embraces sustainable practices in the vineyard and winery, including the use of animals to control weeds and pests - limiting chemical use, using solar power and no irrigation. All of the wines are low in sulphur and vegan friendly.

isa and Jared Karran are determined to make Kangala Co a happy, positive, fun space offering not only much-needed items on Kangaroo Island, but also supporting worthwhile causes. The couple that founded and operate Kangala Wildlife & Animal Rescue at Nepean Bay operate the shop on Telegraph Road in Kingscote. They wanted to keep the variety shop aspect going, with homewares, toys, books and puzzles, pet treats and now Christmas decorations, as KI locals just don’t have that many shopping options. But Kangala Co is much more than a shop. It’s named in honour of their wildlife rescue operation that began in earnest after the devastating 2019/2020 bushfire disaster. In the six years since, the couple and their Kangala volunteers have rescued more than 200 kangaroos, as well as numerous wallabies, possums and koalas.
K There is a special Kangala Rescue section in the shop offering related merchandise with 100 per cent of proceeds going to local wildlife & animal rescue. Kangala Co is also now a dropoff point for injured wildlife and animals, with a variety of wildlife & domestic animals coming in. There is also a special section for the Dachshund Rescue Australia, offering dachshund related merchandise for sale, with proceeds going to that organisation. Lisa said it was her way of giving back to the dachshund community after the trials and tribulations of the whole Valerie experience.

Les Douceurs de Sooz has really taken off with a new shop and commercial kitchen on Kohinoor Road at the entrance to Kingscote. Susie was born and raised in the small city of Metz in the Lorraine region of northeast France, before moving to KI just before the 2020 bushfires.
She now opens every Friday morning making a lot of varieties of savoury pies and sweet pastries. She also sets up her stall during the high season October to April - at other events and markets, every first Sunday of the month at the Penneshaw local and some cruise ship markets in Penneshaw as well.

Just recently, Bev and Larry have taken a well-deserved break and handed over daily operations to children Tristan, Tiffany and Mel. In 1991, the Turner family faced a big question: what should traditional sheep farmers do given a downturn of wool prices? The couple came up with an answer, not realising that it would lead them to become one of the few remaining commercial eucalyptus oil distilleries in Australia. “We are extremely proud of our family-owned business and keeping this Aussie industry alive,” Emu Ridge owner Bev Turner said. Eucalyptus oil was Australia’s first true export overseas, but these days around 90 per cent of the world’s supply comes from countries like China and Brazil. Today, more than 35 years

o most people honey is just another spread on the supermarket shelf, nestled somewhere between the jams and peanut butter. But not this honey. For a start, this honey comes from Kangaroo Island, a pristine, GM free, bee sanctuary 13 kilometres off the coast of South Australia. Kangaroo Island is the oldest bee sanctuary in the world and home to the purest Ligurian bees on Earth. Renowned for their gentle nature, they were brought to the island in the 1880s, protected by a special act of parliament in 1885 and have been fortunate to avoid most of the diseases and contaminants that have affected other bees around the world.
This particular variety of honey was collected by the bees in 2019 from flowering gum trees called Eucalyptus Remota that only grow in one location on the planet: the western end of Kangaroo Island. But if that wasn’t special enough, nearly all these trees were destroyed by the bushfires on the island in 2020 and will now take up to 7 years to fully regenerate. You won’t find this honey in a single supermarket, or store, anywhere in the world. There is simply not enough to go around. The limited quantity of jars have
been hand packed on Kangaroo Island and they are only available in 300 gram numbered jars from one website, ours. As you can imagine, this honey has an authentic, pure, beautiful flavour. But taste isn’t the only benefit provided by these unique bees. They also make propolis, a natural substance shown in University of Sydney research to be effective in the treatment of human cancer cells. Further investigation is being undertaken to determine the therapeutic benefits. By purchasing this honey, you will also be helping to save the bees of Kangaroo Island. HE late Neil ‘Shep’ Sheppard started his art career as a pen and ink artist, but did not discover colour until the last 18 years of his life. He was very adventurous, experimenting with themes, media and subject matter, ranging from traditional landscapes, seascapes and buildings to abstract and naive depictions of daily life. Having always sketched in black and white, the former teacher started painting with acrylic and oil, with numerous solo and shared exhibitions following. KIWN is a volunteer-run notfor-profit wildlife conservation organisation that responds to requests for emergency rescues, and provides direct care for orphaned, injured or displaced wildlife. It also initiates and supports environmental protection programs, plants trees and shrubs for habitat restoration, builds sanctuary support on private land, and organises specialised carer training and advice. Starting as a fitter and turner, he earned the prestigious “Dux Award” at the School of Mechanical Engineering in Adelaide. This early achievement laid the foundation for his precision and his talent for transforming raw materials into meaningful creations. In 2015, Mark and his wife, Robyn moved to Kangaroo Island, marking the start of an exciting new chapter, with Robyn’s steadfast support and the Island’s rugged natural beauty of nature. In early 2026 Mark and Robyn opened their outdoor and indoor gallery where a lot of Mark’s creations are on display. You can admire an array of different art techniques in the form of garden art sculptures and interior art decor.
You may be even lucky enough to view a sculpture in the making. Today Mark’s journey is still unfolding. He sees endless opportunities to create, innovate and push the boundaries of what is possible with metal. This is just the beginning of a story filled with potential. ryar’s Kangaroo Island Free Range Eggs is a family owned-andoperated business situated on Kangaroo Island’s pristine farming land, producing pastured, free range eggs. Tom and Fiona Fryar established the business in 1992, with just 400 hens on 40 hectares of land. Today, the couple and their sons, Thomas and Jason and their wives Kirby and Bonnie, run full-beaked true free range hens over their 2000-hectare farm and employ over 25 people. The hens live in 80 individual custom built mobile sheds on the farm, which are designed so that the hens are never locked in and are continuously free to roam as they please. The mobile sheds provide roosting rails, nest boxes and shelter for the hens. The hens’ welfare is of the utmost importance to the Fryar family, which is why they run them at no more than 190 hens per hectare. The mobile sheds are placed on fresh pasture giving the hens plenty of space to scratch and peck at seeds, grass and insects. The hens’ nutrition is also enhanced by a mixture of grains that are grown, harvested and crushed all on the farm. Kangaroo Island Free Range Eggs have maremma stock guardian dogs that live with the hens. The dogs love living out
with the hens and do a brilliant job guarding them from any predators, such as eagles and feral cats. Eggs are collected daily and stored in a cool room to ensure they are a product of excellent freshness and quality. The eggs are then graded and packed on the farm. Each week, the eggs are sold and transported in refrigerated transport to stores and outlets on Kangaroo Island, Adelaide, regional South Australia, Melbourne, Sydney. Kangaroo Island Free Range Eggs is a growing business, which the Fryar family recognise would not be where it is today without its wonderful
staff members. The team consists of 25 employees from the people who collect the eggs, tend to the dogs’ and hens’ needs, work in the egg-processing facility, feed the birds, perform maintenance and farm duties around the farm and look after the egg sales. Every team member is vital to the business and is the reason KI Free Range Eggs are able to produce such a high-quality product. The business is externally audited so customers can be assured that the pastured free range hens are true free range. KI Free Range Eggs is certified by Humane Choice and PROOF (Pasture Raised On

22 YEARS OF MAKING CIDER HAINES

raham and Mary Jones have followed through with their dream of making authentic ciders on Kangaroo Island, beginning planting an apple orchard on their property in 2004, and so 2026 marks the 22nd birthday of the orchards. Why? To be able to make a top quality cider. In 2012, the pair saw through their dream and officially set up Kangaroo Island Ciders. Graham has been teaching cider making and making cider with his students for many years as part of the winemaking programs at the University of Adelaide. Wanting to take his passion for premium quality ciders to the next level, he and Mary planted 30 different cider apple varieties, together with a few dessert apple varieties. They now have more than 800 trees in their orchards. Among the orchards you can spot old English varieties, such as Yarlington Mill, Somerset
Red Streak, Kingston Black and Golden Harvey. Planting a vast range of varieties means Kangaroo Island Ciders are able to create many different flavours, with bittersweet and bittersharp apples adding to the complexity of the ciders. While Graham manages the cider productions, there’s no doubt Kangaroo Island Ciders is a family affair. Son, Gavin, assists in processing and blending the

ciders, while Mary is involved in maintaining the orchard, organising the apple picking and even designing the labels for the cider - which are based on the coastal views of Kangaroo Island. This year, the Jones family again had the assistance of the KI Dragons, based in American River, together with members of the Bicycle Users Group (BUG) to pick the apples. The trees were loaded with apples but the lack of water for
irrigation made the apples small and the crop was well down on previous years but the quality was excellent. “The cider has again turned out to be one of the best we have made - a great vintage,” Graham said. Penneshaw community markets are held on the first Sunday annually from October to April, plus Easter Sunday. In the event of adverse weather, the markets fall back to Penneshaw Hall, adjacent the oval, to provide shelter for visitors to browse the range of items on display, sheltered from wind and rain. Tasting Notes ‘The Captain’ refers to Captain Matthew Flinders who chartered much of the Australian coastline before stumbling across Kangaroo Island in 1802 and named it after the large number of a particular marsupial he saw hopping about (any guesses!?). Cabernet Sauvignon thrives on Kangaroo Island thanks to the slow even ripening influenced by the cooling sea breezes coupled with our ancient terra rossa soils, producing wines of great character but also finesse. SCULPTURE TRAIL INSPIRES PENNESHAW
T
he Penneshaw Progress Association has embraced and developed the inspirational concept of a Sculpture Trail that was first envisioned by a small group of islanders, passionate about the arts, community, and custodianship of the Island’s story. The trail is positioned on 4.5 hectares of dunes overlooking Hog Bay; the beach at the heart of Penneshaw, the little town where the ferry docks. In fact, it is only a short walk from the ferry terminal, which is the main arrival and departure point for both visitors and locals. The trail aims to distil and protect the unique story of Kangaroo Island, its natural environment, and its people through the art of sculpture, inspiring deeper connections and enriching the cultural experience. Both human stories and nature in its various forms have been interpreted with a range of sculptural and landscape elements, comprising natural materials, found or reclaimed objects, or materials sympathetic to the site. The area is also home to a significant population of wildlife and local endemic plant species. But the journey has only just begun. The trail will be ever evolving as it grows and develops with the addition of sculpture and landscape form over the years to come. Each time you visit it will present a new surprise. After some years of planning

The growth of the trail and installation of new sculptures continues to be attributed to generous donations and patron funding. The energy of community volunteers has been boundless. Each one is passionate about the environment, their community and the project. Their commitment has not waned. From seeking funding and sculpture installations, to maintaining the infrastructure and environment through installing artworks, trimming, weeding, carting tons of limestone rocks, and revegetating the area with more than 1000 trees and other native plants. The 1.5 kms of the trail, winds
through the dunes and features lookouts, steps, boardwalks, a swing bridge, seating and scenic views with a surprise at every turn. The grace and form of ancient Blackthorn trees, the majestic ravine where the swing bridge is installed, and the ghost tree that sits atop a rise are some off the features. The design of the trail, by local artist and landscape gardener, Bryon Buick, is a sculpture in itself. Bryon captured the essence of the site with a sympathetic approach to the extraordinary elements within the area which comprises four main character precincts: sand dunes, a deep ravine formed in a massive flood over 100 years ago, bursia heath and woodland, allowing considerable interpretive scope for sculpture artists in the future. Local artist/sculptor, Dave Clark, and committed volunteers
have transformed the trail with stone walling, hand crafted seats, and impressive entrance signs. He has also embraced the essence of the site with beautiful creations and attention to detail. The natural materials used complement the existing environment. It has been a labour of love for all those concerned to produce a trail planned to be a leading cultural landmark of the region which captures and preserves the unique and evolving story of Kangaroo Island, and enriches the experience of visitors and locals alike. Construction began in early 2018 and we officially opened the trail in July 2018. Each season, there are new things to see, new additional sculptures being installed, and always a surprise to be found in nature along the trail.
