In the heart of Kimba sits a fine stone building on once-consecrated church grounds. Pat Beinke has transformed this land into a gardener’s delight, and the church into a warm home, with plant life prominent in almost every nook. The church, built of limestone quarried from the Kimba district, was off icially opened in 1931 and served the local community until it was sold to the Beinkes in 1990.

At the table on her back verandah, Pat sits with an effortless air of elegance; her silver bob is flawless, her blue eyes - sharp behind chic black frames - miss nothing, and her words hold history in them.

With her husband Allan, the Beinkes purchased the St John’s Anglican Church building in 1990.

It has since been the locale of Pat’s sewing business, a fashion retail space, a wood workshop for her father and, eventually, an

exciting renovation project.

“In 2002, we decided we would do it up as a bed and breakfast,” Pat said.

“There were builders from Ceduna here at the time renovating the hotel and I approached them and said what we wanted to do inside, and they took it on.”

Pat and Allan travelled to Adelaide to source materials for the project at a salvage yard.

“We ordered all this secondhand timber, because I didn’t want new,” she smiled.

“And then we found a gorgeous old staircase that I thought would be good for the mezzanine and we went from there.”

Back downstairs, the spacious living, dining and kitchen area is tastefully decorated with touches of vintage charm. This is Pat’s favourite part of the house.

“It’s just the openness,” she said.

“It’s still one big room, only divided up by furniture, it’s just the openness is what I like.”

Careful thought has gone into not crowding the open space, ensuring unity through colour and texture.

Looking out through the double entrance doors, one spots a rare luxury in Kimba - a large swimming pool.

“You don’t normally entertain at the front of the house,” she laughed.

“But when the grandkids are in it they couldn’t care two hoots where it is.”

Back inside, the old vestry now houses the laundry, bathroom and spare bedroom - clean and crisp whites throughout.

All these interior renovations were completed before the Beinkes moved into the home.

In 2010, the bed and breakfast wrapped up after Allan experienced a life-changing medical incident.

Pat and Allan retired from the Millbrae family farm, passing it down to the next generation and turning their Kimba property into a home.

This is when the garden - until then mostly bushlandbecame a source and subject of energy exchange for Pat.

“I love gardening, I could spend all day in the garden, that’s my happy place,” she said.

“I can lose myself out here, I can be in a not good state of mind, I come out and do stuff and it’s good for the soul.

Sadly, in 2021, Allan passed away. Pat has continued in the home, and in the town of Kimba - walking and swimming in the warmer months, and spending countless hours in her garden.

“Although the results may go unnoticed by others, I find gardening rewarding,” she said.

For Pat, gardening carries both therapeutic and physical benefits.

The back verandah opens to a paved patio area, where you can stand in the sun, surrounded by trees and layers of wildflowers.

This is what Pat described as a “ramshackle garden”.

An old timber dining chair, a bench seat with a wreath of twined branches hanging from its ear, clay pots, an old shop sign, a rusty saw, a huge metal bell and the beloved beehive are little surprises as you wander along the path.

Pat has only had honey bees

for two years, finding the courage after discovering the Flow Hive system.

“I’ve always been interested in bees and always wanted to have a beehive but sort of talked myself out of it,” she explained.

“It’s been marvellous; not only am I pollinating everyone’s trees but we’ve got that beautiful golden honey.”

Once the garden has been explored, the shed is the final surprise.

As the door opens, the keen crafter’s senses stir at the sight of

a potter’s wheel, a usable workspace, wall cupboards filled with pottery on display, and a solid little kiln in the corner.

“I pot when I want to, and if someone wants some coffee cups or something, they contact me and I’ll make some for them,” Pat said modestly.

Word is that Pat also runs workshops during the school holidays.

“I’ve got to an age in my life where I don’t want to be committed, I want to do things as I want to do them,” she laughed.

When Astyn Reid met her future husband Ben, he already had his heart set on one day living on a farm at Kellidie Bay.

By a stroke of luck, the exact property Ben had admired for years came up for sale while Astyn was still living in Mount Gambier - and the couple jumped at the chance to make it their own.

“My husband fell in love with this farm before we met, and fortunately for Ben, the property came up for sale and he was able to buy it,” Astyn said.

“I was living in Mount Gambier when we met, and deciding where we would settle was really

“We both love this little piece of the world and are so grateful that we’ve been able to build and settle here.”

After two years of planning, the slab for their dream home was poured in April, and by November they - Ben, Astyn and daughter Izzy - had moved in; a remarkably quick build considering the project’s remote location.

The home carries a deep sense of family history. After the

Ash Wednesday fires devastated the Limestone Coast in 1983 and burnt through Astyn’s family farm, her father and a friend milled some blackwood trees salvaged from the blaze, setting the timber aside for something special one day.

“The wood sat untouched for 40 years until we came up with the perfect way to bring a little of my family history to the Eyre Peninsula,” Astyn explained.

“The stone has a similar look to Mount Gambier limestone, which reminds us both of where we grew up.”

One of the home’s standout features is the striking stone pillar with a double-sided fireplace separating the living and dining areas - a design Astyn had always envisioned.

“Our builder and stonemason did an incredible job engineering it,” she said.

Other thoughtful details include pine barn doors sourced from Melbourne, which Astyn stained to match the flooring.

“One of our favourite parts are the soft-close runners and the giant brass handmade handles,” she said.

“Some of my favourite features are the floor-to-ceiling windows, the one-way glass in the
