Bringing renovation ideas to life PLANNING a bathroom or kitchen renovation can be exciting but knowing where to start can also be a little overwhelming. Having a local team you can talk to, see products in person and get advice from can make the process much easier. That is where Highgrove Bathrooms Rockhampton comes in. Located at 161 Musgrave Street, Berserker, the showroom is the largest bathroom and kitchen showroom in Central Queensland. You will also know you have found it when you spot the two big blue inflatable ducks on the roof. Owner Simon Moore opened the business in February 2022 after seeing an opportunity to offer locals more choice when it came to bathroom and kitchen products. “I wanted to create a place where people could come in, have a chat and find beautiful, affordable products locally,” Simon said. Today, Highgrove Bathrooms services customers, builders and tradespeople throughout Rockhampton and Central Queensland, offering a wide range of bathroom, kitchen and laundry products including vanities, tapware, shower screens, baths, basins and accessories. The large showroom allows customers to see products in person, compare styles and finishes and talk through their project with the team. “We work with a lot of local builders and tradespeople in the region,” Simon said.

For Simon, the people behind the business are just as important as the products. “We’ve got a fantastic team in the store, and we genuinely love helping people bring their ideas to life,” he said. Whether it is a complete renovation or simply giving a bathroom a refresh, the dedicated team is there to answer questions, offer advice and help customers find products that suit their home and budget. Proud to be part of Rockhampton Being part of the local community is something Simon is particularly passionate about. “We’ve got a great community here in Rockhampton, and I really enjoy being part of it,” he said. “I love seeing people come into the showroom with an idea and then helping them turn it into something they’re really excited about.” The business has developed strong relationships with local homeowners, builders and tradespeople, and Simon says those connections are a big part of what makes the business special. “We’ve built some great relationships with our customers and local tradies, and that’s something we’re really proud of. We’re lucky to do what we do and to be part of such a great community,” he said. For anyone starting a renovation, Simon recommends having a plan and budget before visiting the showroom. “Have a plan in place and a budget, then visit our extensive showroom where our highly skilled team can assist you further,” he said.

Matchmaking to matrimony By Breanna Lloyd AFTER a love story that began with a little matchmaking and a carefully crafted Facebook message, Loyandi De Jager (Lou) and Danie Swanepoel became husband and wife on Saturday, 16 May. Lou and Danie chose Rockhampton’s Botanic Gardens for their ceremony, where they shared their vows privately before celebrating with family and friends, with Michael from Married by Michael officiating. The newlyweds then headed to the Rockhampton Leagues Club for their reception, with photographer Davie Van Staden there to document the day. “I get to call my best friend my husband, and I still can’t believe how lucky I am,” Lou said. “Standing beside Danie on our wedding day was the easiest and most beautiful ‘yes’ of my life. “I can’t wait to do life with him, hand in hand, forever.”

Looking back to where it all began, Lou and Danie’s story started in a much less traditional way. Lou’s mum, Yolanda, played matchmaker when she and her youngest daughter, Leanell, visited Danie’s parents on 5 November 2022. At the time, Danie lived in a small cabin at the top of the hill on his parents’ property and rarely ventured down to the main house. But for some reason, that afternoon he did. Danie soon found himself being questioned by Yolanda about his work and hobbies.
The happy couple celebrated their reception at the Rockhampton Leagues Club.
“Oh, my daughter is very into those hobbies too,” Yolanda said. By the time she arrived home, she had made up her mind. “I have found someone for you,” Yolanda told Lou. Curiosity got the better of Lou, who enlisted Leanell to help track down the mystery man on Facebook. After messaging back and forth and playing online games together, the pair agreed to go on their first date on 19 November 2022. While Danie waited to pick Lou up after a lamp-making class, he said the nerves had well and truly kicked in. “When she walked out, she was looking around trying to find me, so I called her and said, ‘Look right’,” he said. “She immediately turned left. “I chuckled and thought to myself, ‘This will be a fun adventure with her’.” Their first date, originally only supposed to be brunch at CocoBrew Rockhampton, eventually took them to Pebble Beach at Rosslyn Bay. “While we were waiting for pizza, Lou saw some cool-looking Dungeons and Dragons dice on her phone, but little did she know I had already bought her a gift, which ended up being the exact same set of dice,” Danie said.

Lou said when she got home, she went straight to her parents’ room, even though they were asleep, to tell them about the wonderful date. “Mum was right... again,” Lou said.
“I said, ‘Wanna see a magic trick?’ and pretended to pull the dice out of her phone.
Their relationship continued to grow and it didn’t take long for Danie to realise he had found someone special.
“She laughed in disbelief when she saw the metallic set of dice in

With their blessing secured, he enlisted Yolanda and Lou’s sisters, Leandri and Leanell, to help plan a Christmas Day surprise. A small card reading “Be my Mrs Swanepoel” was hidden inside a wrapped present as part of a family game, leaving Danie with the task of steering everyone else away from the
all-important box. The plan worked and, after swapping presents with Lou, Danie waited as she slowly opened the gift. As she tried to make sense of the card, he dropped to one knee with the ring. And just like that, Lou and Danie marked another special chapter in their story on 25 December 2024. It turns out Yolanda’s matchmaking instincts were pretty spot on.

Based in Central Queensland and travelling across the state, owner and photographer Sinead Kirkels specialises in creating timeless, elegant images that allow couples to relive their wedding day for years to come. Hello Mae Studio began in 2019 as a wedding signage and invitation design studio, inspired by Sinead’s endless love of art and creativity.

A breathtaking place to wed SET among the rolling mountains north of Yeppoon, Ambrym Estate has quickly established itself as a distinctive destination for couples wanting to turn their wedding into an experience that extends well beyond the ceremony. With uninterrupted panoramic views stretching from Rosslyn Bay to Corio Bay and the Keppel Islands forming a spectacular backdrop, the family-owned estate combines the tranquillity of a hinterland retreat with everything the Capricorn Coast has to offer. Owner and manager Alicia Thorpe said Ambrym Estate officially launched as a wedding and event venue in 2024, but its story began before the family ever considered opening it to the public. After hosting three weddings at the property while living there, Alicia and her family fell in love with seeing the space transformed for celebrations. When they later moved to a larger farm about 2km away to be closer to their cattle, they decided they did not want to part with the property. Instead, Ambrym Estate was born. The family added a private, architecturally designed honeymoon suite and pavilion to the existing property, creating a destination where couples could celebrate, stay and spend quality time with the people closest to them. Today, the estate can accommodate everything from luxury weddings to intimate celebrations where couples bring their own ideas to life with DIY styling and their choice of suppliers.

Accommodation is one of Ambrym Estate’s defining features. The private, self-contained honeymoon suite is tucked into the hillside away from the activity of the main event spaces, while the farmhouse and left wing can accommodate another 10 guests. A large resort-style swimming pool sits between the accommodation areas, giving guests another place to relax and continue enjoying the celebrations throughout the weekend. The estate also offers furniture, a fully equipped bar and liquor licence, a preparation kitchen with a commercial dishwasher, crockery and glassware, and state-of-the-art parrilla and barbecue facilities. Alicia said the attention to detail throughout the property, from its buildings to its beautifully maintained gardens, helped create the relaxed atmosphere Ambrym had become known for. Guests often comment that arriving at the estate feels like escaping to the Sunshine Coast hinterland, despite remaining right here in Central Queensland. Ambrym’s name also carries an important connection to Alicia’s family history. Named after Ambrym Island in Vanuatu, it pays tribute to the South Sea Islander people who were blackbirded and brought to the region to work in the sugar cane industry during the late 1800s. Alicia’s ancestors were part of that

history, making the values of family, love and connection particularly meaningful to the estate and the experience the Thorpe family hopes to create for its guests.
The venue has grown rapidly since opening, hosting three weddings within its first six months, followed by 10 the next year and 20 in 2026.
Ambrym remains very much a family operation, with Alicia working alongside her husband Kris, children Lilli, Ethan and Isla and a dedicated team including venue manager James Skuthorp, events planner Gina Enkuzis, social media and marketing manager Penny Hunt, and administration team Theresa King and Stephanie Vass.
But 20 weddings a year is where Alicia intends to keep it. The limit allows the family to maintain Ambrym’s exclusivity, keep the property immaculate and give the estate time to breathe between celebrations. While Ambrym has traditionally operated strictly as a venue hire business, its offering is continuing to
evolve, with an in-house wedding planner now incorporated into its 2028 packages. The estate also works alongside the region’s talented photographers, florists, caterers, stylists and event professionals, while weddings attract couples and guests from throughout Central Queensland and further afield. For Alicia, that means Ambrym is not only creating memorable celebrations, but also encouraging visitors to stay, dine and explore the Capricorn Coast.

Nikki-Lee Calder, owner of Doo Town, a business located in Townsville, North Queensland, is a well experienced resin artist with over eight years of practical hands-on knowledge and skills. She specialises in wedding flowers, but also preserves flowers from other special occasions.

Each resin piece is custom made, and the variety of shapes and resin moulds available provides clients with a great selection of choices for their flower arrangements. The resin preservation process from drying the flowers, creating layouts, pouring the resin, then sanding and polishing, usually takes around six months to complete.
