Ascot Vale Heights School
Empowering Every Student to Thrive FOR families seeking a school where every child is valued, supported and encouraged to reach their full potential, Ascot Vale Heights School stands as a shining example of inclusive education in Victoria.
Located in Melbourne’s inner north-west, Ascot Vale Heights School is a specialist government school dedicated to educating students aged five to eighteen with mild to moderate cognitive disabilities. More than simply providing an education, the school is committed to nurturing confident, capable and engaged young people who are well prepared for life beyond the classroom.
At the heart of the school’s philosophy is a belief that every student learns differently. Individual Education Plans (IEPs) are developed for every learner, ensuring teaching is personalised to each student’s strengths, goals and aspirations. Regular Student Support Group meetings bring families and educators together, creating strong partnerships that help students achieve meaningful progress both academically and personally.
The learning environment has also been carefully designed to promote independence, accessibility and wellbeing. Recent upgrades have transformed the campus into a modern, flexible learning space featuring specialist classrooms, breakout areas, sensory-friendly spaces, accessible facilities and collaborative teaching environments that allow students to learn in ways that best suit their individual needs.
Education at Ascot Vale Heights School extends well beyond traditional classroom learning. Students participate in a broad range of specialist programs including Music, Performing Arts, Visual Arts, Physical Education, Bike Education, and the popular Kitchen Garden Program. These experiences encourage creativity, communication, teamwork and practical life skills while building confidence and self-esteem. Technology also plays an important role, with assistive technologies and a one-to-one iPad program supporting engagement and personalised learning.
Preparing students for life after school is another key priority. The curriculum focuses on developing independence, social skills, communication and real-world learning experiences that equip students with the confidence to participate actively in their communities. Whether progressing to further education, employment or community participation, students are supported every step of the way.
Equally important is the school’s welcoming and inclusive culture. Families are recognised as essential partners in education and are encouraged to be actively involved through regular communication, school events and celebrations of student achievement. With a culturally diverse community and a strong commitment to equity, respect and inclusion, Ascot Vale Heights School creates an environment where every student and family feels they belong.
For the disability community, choosing the right school is about far more than academics—it’s about finding a place where children are understood, celebrated and empowered. Starting with Confidence
STARTING school is an exciting milestone, but for families of children with a disability, it can also bring extra questions about how to ensure your child feels supported, included, and ready to thrive.
Fortunately schools, both government and non-government, offer a growing range of programs and resources to help children with diverse learning needs transition confidently into the classroom.
The first step is understanding the supports available.
Many schools provide specialist learning support, integration aides, and tailored education plans to ensure each child can access the curriculum fully.
Parents can work with teachers, learning specialists, and allied health professionals such as occupational therapists and speech pathologists to develop strategies that meet their child’s individual needs.
This collaboration is central to creating an environment where children with disabilities feel capable and included.
For families exploring private or Catholic schools, it’s important to ask about the specific support they offer.
Parents can work with teachers, learning specialists, and allied health professionals such as occupational therapists and speech pathologists to develop strategies that meet their child’s individual needs.
Many schools have dedicated learning support coordinators, personalised learning plans, and transition programs that help children adjust socially and academically.
Visiting schools and asking detailed questions about how they accommodate different abilities, support classroom participation, and promote inclusion can make a huge difference in finding the right fit.
Victoria also offers a wealth of community resources to complement school-based support.
Early engagement with these programs can smooth the transition to school life and provide additional avenues for learning and play in a safe, supportive environment.
Parents play a vital role in supporting their child. Open communication with teachers, regular check-ins on progress, and reinforcing school routines at home can help children feel secure.
Preparing children by practising daily routines, discussing what school will be like, and highlighting their strengths fosters confidence and independence from the very first day.
Connecting with other families of children with disabilities is equally valuable. Victoria’s parent networks and advocacy groups offer advice, encouragement, and shared experiences that can help you navigate challenges and celebrate milestones.

Meet our team
We believe learning success happens when everyone works together. That’s why we:
• Collaborate with schools and teachers
• Communicate with allied health professionals (psychologists, speech therapists, OTs)
• Support families with practical strategies for home and school
This ensures consistency across all environments and creates a wrap-around support system for each learner.
The real transformation goes beyond academics. Students begin to:
Feel understood
Build confidence
Reduce anxiety
Reconnect with learning
Families often describe the experience as life-changing, not just because results improve, but because their child begins to believe in themselves again.
Our Mission
We are part of a movement reshaping education. We ask: “How can we teach the way this child learns?”
BETTER MULTISENSORY LEARNING
Transforming Education Through Understanding, Expertise & Heart
Every Brain is Different. Every Learner Matters.
In a world designed for the “average learner,” Better Multisensory Learning is redefining education because there is no average mind. We support students with dyslexia, ADHD, autism, and diverse learning profiles by meeting them exactly where they are. We don’t change the child, we transform the way learning is delivered.
A Centre Built on Understanding Individualised One-on-One Support
Our philosophy is simple yet powerful. Students thrive when teaching aligns with how their brain processes information. Using structured, evidence-based multisensory methods, students:
• See • Touch
• Hear
• Move
• Speak
This strengthens neural pathways, builds memory, and creates meaningful learning experiences that last.
Every session at Better Multisensory Learning is: One-on-one
Fully individualised Tailored to each learner’s profile, pace, and goals
There is no one-size-fits-all approach. Each program is carefully designed based on assessment, observation, and ongoing progress monitoring.
Flexible Support: Weekly Sessions & School Holiday Intensives
We understand that consistency and timing matter. That’s why we offer:
Weekly Sessions
• Ongoing structured support
• Skill development and consolidation
• Building routine, confidence, and mastery over time
School Holiday Intensives
• Daily 1-hour sessions every day for either one or two weeks
• Targeted skill-building and pre-teaching upcoming content
• Ideal for boosting confidence before a new term
• Accelerated progress in a focused, supportive environment
These intensives are highly effective in helping students catch up, keep up, and get ahead.

Play. Support. Connect.
FOR people of all ages, sport is about so much more than physical activity. It provides an opportunity to build confidence, develop lifelong skills, create meaningful friendships, and become part of a supportive community.
For children and adults living with disability, inclusive sporting programs open the door to experiences that promote independence, wellbeing, and personal achievement while ensuring everyone has the chance to participate, regardless of their ability.
The range of inclusive sporting opportunities continues to grow. Community sporting clubs, schools, disability organisations, local councils, and state sporting associations are working together to create programs that make participation accessible for everyone.
Whether someone is interested in team sports, individual activities, recreation, or competitive pathways, there are now more options than ever before to become involved in an environment that celebrates diversity and inclusion.
Programs are designed to cater for a wide range of abilities and interests. Participants can choose from modified football, cricket, basketball, netball, swimming, athletics, cycling, tennis, dance, martial arts, gymnastics, equestrian activities, and many other sports.
Flexible formats, adaptive equipment, and modified rules ensure participants can enjoy the game while developing their skills at their own pace.
Many organisations also offer come-andtry days, holiday programs, social competitions, and introductory clinics that allow families to explore different activities before committing to a regular program.
The benefits of participation extend well beyond physical fitness. Regular involvement in sport improves strength, coordination, balance, mobility, and overall health, while also supporting mental wellbeing through increased confidence, reduced stress, and improved self-esteem.
Accessing local disability sport networks, council recreation officers, or support coordinators can also make it easier to find programs that best match an individual’s goals, interests, and support needs.
Learning new skills, setting goals, and celebrating achievements, whether large or small, helps participants develop resilience, independence, and a positive outlook that carries into school, work, and everyday life.
An important part of every successful program is the support network surrounding participants.
Accredited coaches, trained volunteers, disability inclusion officers, integration aides, therapists, and dedicated club members all work together to create welcoming and positive experiences.
Many clubs offer buddy programs, orientation sessions, sensory-friendly environments, accessible facilities, and family information evenings to ensure new participants feel comfortable and confident from their very first visit.
Families and carers also play a significant role in encouraging long-term participation.
By supporting individuals to explore different activities, celebrating milestones, and maintaining open communication with coaches and program coordinators, families help create positive sporting experiences that build confidence over time.
Accessing local disability sport networks, council recreation officers, or support coordinators can also make it easier to find programs that best match an individual’s goals, interests, and support needs.
Schools continue to play an important role by introducing inclusive physical education programs and working closely with community clubs to create smooth pathways into local sport. These partnerships help children continue participating outside the classroom while developing friendships and becoming active members of their local community. For young people, this continuity can have a lasting impact on confidence, social development, and lifelong participation in physical activity.
For adults living with disability, inclusive sport provides valuable opportunities to stay active while building social connections and maintaining independence. Social sporting competitions, walking groups, fitness classes, recreational clubs, and state-level competitions cater to people with varying abilities and aspirations. Many participants discover not only improved health but also lasting friendships, leadership opportunities, and a renewed sense of belonging within their community.
Technology and adaptive equipment are also making sport more accessible than ever before. Wheelchair sports, vision-impaired activities, modified cycling equipment, communication supports, and specialised coaching techniques continue to remove
barriers and create opportunities for people to participate safely and confidently. As awareness grows, more clubs are embracing inclusive practices and investing in accessible facilities that welcome participants of all abilities.
Perhaps the greatest benefit of inclusive sport is the sense of community it creates. Sport brings together participants, families, volunteers, coaches, and supporters who share a common goal of ensuring everyone has the opportunity to enjoy the physical, social, and emotional rewards of being active. It teaches teamwork, communication, respect, perseverance, and inclusion while creating memories and friendships that often last a lifetime.
Inclusive sport is about opening doors rather than creating limitations. Whether a child is taking their first steps onto the field, a teenager is developing new skills, or an adult is looking to stay active and connected, there are countless opportunities available throughout Victoria. With the right support, welcoming clubs, and inclusive programs, people with disability can enjoy all the benefits that sport has to offer, building confidence, improving wellbeing, developing independence, and discovering that everyone has a place to belong.

THE early years of a child’s life lay the foundation for lifelong learning, confidence, and wellbeing. Families of children with a disability have access to a growing network of services and programs designed to support development, encourage exploration, and celebrate every milestone, no matter how small.
Early intervention is key. Research shows that timely support can make a meaningful difference in communication, social skills, motor development, and learning. Families can access early intervention services through the NDIS, local councils, and community-based providers, offering a range of therapies such as occupational therapy, speech therapy, physiotherapy, and specialised play programs. These services are tailored to each child’s strengths, helping them build skills at their own pace while fostering confidence and independence.
Local community programs across Victoria are also an important part of the journey. Libraries, community centres, and playgroups offer sensory-friendly sessions, interactive workshops, and social activities that encourage curiosity and connection. These programs provide a safe environment for children to practise new skills, explore their

interests, and build friendships outside the home.
Parents and carers are central to the early years advantage. Engaging in everyday learning experiences such as reading together, playing, or exploring nature, reinforces therapy goals and encourages curiosity.
Open communication with therapists, educators, and other professionals ensures strategies are consistent across home, school, and community settings, giving children a sense of stability and confidence as they grow.
Transitioning from early intervention to school can feel daunting, but schools and educators are increasingly focused on inclusivity.
Many primary schools, both public and private, offer programs that support children with diverse abilities, including tailored learning plans, classroom aides, and social skills initiatives.
Early collaboration between families, therapists, and teachers ensures children step into school ready to participate, learn, and thrive alongside their peers.
The early years are a time of remarkable growth, and in Victoria, families have access to a rich ecosystem of support to guide each child’s journey. By taking small, intentional steps, whether through therapy sessions, community activities or daily learning at home, children with disabilities can make big progress.
Families of children with a disability have access to a growing network of services and programs designed to support development, encourage exploration, and celebrate every milestone, no matter how small.
These experiences build confidence, independence, and resilience, laying a strong foundation for school and beyond.
With the right support, encouragement, and opportunities, the early years become not just a preparation phase but a launching pad for success, helping children with disabilities reach their full potential, one small step at a time.

Since 1972, the Hearing Unit at Yarra Valley Grammar has provided exceptional educational opportunities for students who are deaf or hard of hearing. Located within the mainstream school community in Ringwood, the program was established when the parents of four students came together with a shared vision for inclusive and specialised education. More than 50 years later, the Hearing Unit continues to be recognised for its innovation, expertise and commitment to supporting every student to thrive.
At Yarra Valley Grammar, students are immersed in an inclusive learning environment that values independence, connection and personal growth. Students benefit from access to outstanding facilities, the latest hearing technology, and a diverse range of academic, co-curricular and wellbeing programs, enabling them to participate fully in all aspects of school life.
The Hearing Unit currently supports 32 students from the three-year-old Early Learning Centre through to Year 12. Students learn within mainstream classrooms alongside their peers while receiving support from highly trained Teachers of the Deaf who provide personalised assistance and tailored learning strategies. In addition to classroom support, students participate in small group and individual sessions designed to strengthen communication, listening, literacy and academic skills while building confidence and independence.
A defining strength of the program is its collaborative and multidisciplinary approach.
Teachers of the Deaf work closely with families, classroom teachers, audiologists, and onsite specialists including speech pathologists, psychologists and occupational therapists. This partnership ensures that every student receives individualised support that nurtures academic achievement, emotional wellbeing and social development throughout their educational journey.
The Hearing Unit is also proud of its mentoring program, which creates meaningful connections between younger and older students. Through shared experiences and regular opportunities to come together throughout the year, students develop leadership skills, friendships, confidence, and a strong sense of belonging within the Hearing Unit community.
Students at Yarra Valley Grammar have access to advanced hearing technology including FM systems, soundfield systems, cochlear implant compatibility and assistive listening devices. Combined with modern learning spaces designed to optimise listening and communication, these resources help students engage confidently in their learning and fully participate in the broader life of the School.
An exceptional hearing facility is one that combines specialist expertise, innovative technology, personalised learning, and a genuine sense of community. At Yarra Valley Grammar, the Hearing Unit empowers students who are deaf or hard of hearing to flourish academically, socially and emotionally, preparing them with confidence for life beyond the classroom.

Making Lives Better
®
In your own home, on your own terms.
Claire Oldham, owner of Nurse Next Door Home Care Services Pakenham, knows what it feels like when someone finally understands. During her 23 years as a teacher specialising in inclusive education and learning disabilities, she watched families search for years to find real support. That moment stayed with her, and it is what drives her desire to provide care guided by a core purpose of Making Lives Better.
Claire is passionate about making a difference in her community, bringing that same philosophy home through a heart-led service grounded in admiration, possibility and empowerment, finding a better way to help individuals thrive. She believes happiness comes from noticing the joy and wonder around us, and that no place is as comforting as home. As a proud local, she holds a deep affection for the region’s community spirit.
Every client journey is overseen by a dedicated Registered Nurse and Care Designer, giving families a trusted point of contact and the confidence that comes from knowing care is never left to chance. OC Connections
Opportunity, Choice and Connection
AT OC Connections, we believe everyone deserves the opportunity to live a life that is meaningful, connected and shaped by their own goals and aspirations.
For more than 70 years, we have been supporting people with disability to build confidence, develop skills, strengthen relationships and participate fully in their communities. While the world around us continues to change, our commitment remains the same: putting people at the centre of everything we do.
We understand that no two people are the same. Every person has their own strengths, interests, experiences and ambitions. That’s why we take the time to listen, understand what matters most, and work alongside each individual to create opportunities that are right for them.
Our approach is built on partnership. We don’t believe in one-size-fits-all solutions. Instead, we focus on supporting people to make informed choices, pursue their goals and build the future they want for themselves. Whether someone is looking to develop greater independence, build social connections, explore new opportunities or simply enjoy greater choice in their everyday life, we are there to provide support that is flexible, responsive and tailored to their needs.
At the heart of OC Connections is a strong belief in inclusion. We know that meaningful participation happens when people are valued, respected and given opportunities to contribute in ways that are important to them. That’s why we work to create environments where people can connect with others, learn new skills, discover new interests and be active members of their communities.
We are equally committed to supporting families, carers and support networks. By working together, we can help create stronger foundations for people to achieve their goals and navigate life’s opportunities and challenges with confidence.
What sets OC Connections apart is our focus on building long-term relationships. We walk alongside people through different

stages of life, adapting support as needs, goals and circumstances evolve. Our aim is not simply to provide services, but to help people build fulfilling lives defined by choice, belonging and possibility.
Every day, we see the difference that genuine connection can make. It’s found in the confidence to try something new, the pride of achieving a personal goal, the joy of belonging, and the freedom to make decisions about one’s own future.
At OC Connections, we’re proud to be creating opportunities, supporting choice and building connections that help people thrive.

St Paul’s College, VMCH
Belong • Grow • Discover • Achieve FOUNDED in 1957 and now in a purpose-built campus in Balwyn, St Paul’s College is an Independent Catholic Specialist School offering pathways of learning from Prep to Year 12 for students with mild intellectual disability. Guided by the mottos Belong, Grow, Discover, Achieve, the school is a place where every child is known, understood and supported as an individual.
A community built around each student
St Paul’s is intentionally small – around 50 students across Foundation, Upper Primary, Lower Secondary and Upper Secondary levels. Our students are supported to engage with the Victorian Curriculum through Towards Foundation Levels A–D.
Class sizes are truly small – an average of just five students per class, with one Teacher and two Learning Support Officers – giving a staff-to-student ratio of approximately 1:1.7. Every child has an Individual Learning Plan developed with their family, and an on-site allied health team – Speech Therapist, Physiotherapist, Occupational Therapists, Psychologist and School Nurse –who work alongside teachers every day.
A curriculum that opens doors
St Paul’s College’s curriculum includes literacy, wellbeing and future-ready skills. Core programs include the STEM Program, which focuses on science, technology, and mathematics skills; a structured Phonics Program; a Digital Literacy Program; and a Mental Health and Wellbeing Program. Student
leadership is encouraged through Student Representative Council program, while AAC devices and assistive technology are part of daily learning to give every student a voice.
A brand-new library
Adding to the schools specialist facilities, which include a Sensory Room, Living Skills Room, and cafe social enterprise, students returned in Term 2 to refurbished playground spaces, a resources room, a vibrant new mural and, most excitingly, a beautiful new library. The library is fast becoming the centre for literacy learning and quiet discovery on campus.
Preparing for life beyond school
Transition planning starts early. Senior School students focus on work-related skills, personal development and real-world experiences, with the opportunity for pathways to be developed in collaboration with VMCH’s Social Enterprises, including hospitality, retail and horticulture skills programs, and supported employment opportunities. Graduates have also moved on to personalised, interest-based programs funded through the NDIS.

Co-regulation
HELPING children through big emotions: the power of co-regulation Every parent has experienced it: a child overwhelmed by frustration, anxiety, disappointment or anger. In these moments, it can be tempting to focus on stopping the behaviour or finding a quick solution. But research tells us that when children are experiencing big emotions, they are not being difficult – they are having difficulty.
The parts of the brain responsible for managing emotions, impulse control and flexible thinking continue developing throughout childhood and adolescence. Before children can learn to regulate their emotions independently, they first need the support of a trusted adult to regulate with them.
What is co-regulation?
Co-regulation occurs when a parent, caregiver or other trusted adult helps a child manage their emotions within a safe, supportive and non-judgemental environment. Rather than demanding calm, co-regulation focuses on bringing calm and helping a child feel safe enough for their nervous system to settle.
It’s an important stepping stone towards self-regulation, helping children develop the skills they need to understand and manage their emotions over time.
Understanding dysregulation
When children become dysregulated, tasks such as listening, following instructions, problem-solving or reasoning can be incredibly difficult. In these moments, children cannot access the higher-level thinking skills adults often expect from them.
What they need first is connection and support before they can reflect, learn or communicate effectively. Recognising this can help parents respond with empathy and understanding rather than frustration.
Simple ways to support your child Coregulation does not need to be complicated. Sitting quietly beside a child, speaking softly, acknowledging their feelings, offering physical comfort if welcomed, or reducing demands in the moment can all help a child feel supported.
Sometimes a walk outside to change the environment, a drink of water or reconnecting with a trusted adult can help create the conditions needed for regulation. The goal is not to fix the emotion, but to help the child feel safe enough to move through it.
Why adult regulation matters
An important part of co-regulation is recognising our own emotional state as adults. Children often look to us for cues about safety and security. A calm adult nervous system can help calm a child's nervous system.
Slowing your breathing, softening your voice, grounding yourself in the present moment and using reassuring phrases such as “I’m here” or “We’ll work through this together” can help create a sense of safety during challenging moments.
Building lifelong emotional skills
Children learn through repetition and relationships. Over time, these experiences build the foundation for self-regulation. The calm, supportive voice of a caregiver gradually becomes an inner voice they can draw upon themselves.
