We offer a diverse range of engaging subjects and courses designed to extend student learning, foster academic excellence, and develop problem-solving, critical thinking, and leadership capabilities within a vibrant community of talented peers.

CHES serves as a vital bridge connecting schools, universities, metropolitan and rural communities, and students. We provide advanced learning opportunities through our unique hy-flex teaching model, which innovatively blends face-to-face, online, and hybrid learning, ensuring all students— regardless of location—have full and flexible access to our programs. Sport, Arts & Community

EDUCATION in Victoria has long been about more than textbooks, exams, and classrooms. While academic learning is essential, schools increasingly recognise that a well-rounded education extends far beyond traditional lessons. Sport, arts, and community engagement provide opportunities for students to develop confidence, resilience, creativity, and social skills, preparing them for life both inside and outside school. Victorian schools are leading the way in offering programs that balance academic rigor with rich, hands on learning experiences.

Sport has always been central to Australian school life, and Victorian schools are no exception. From inter-school competitions to local club participation, physical activity provides students with more than fitness, it teaches teamwork, discipline, and perseverance. Programs like the Victorian School Sports Program and initiatives coordinated by School Sport Victoria encourage students from primary to secondary levels to engage in a wide variety of sports, from traditional favourites like football, netball, and cricket to emerging sports such as ultimate frisbee and athletics events. These experiences help students develop leadership skills, learn to handle both success and failure, and cultivate a sense of belonging within their school community.

Arts programs are equally vital in Victorian schools, fostering creativity, self expression, and cultural understanding. Music, visual arts, drama, and dance provide outlets for students to explore their talents and develop critical thinking skills. Programs such as The Arts Education Strategy support schools in integrating the arts across the curriculum, while initiatives like the Victorian Young Artists Program and local theatre collaborations give students opportunities to perform, exhibit, and showcase their work beyond the classroom walls. Engagement in the arts has been shown to boost confidence, communication, and collaboration skills, qualities that serve students in all areas of life.

Community involvement further enriches learning by connecting students with the

world beyond their school gates. Victorian schools encourage students to participate in volunteering, environmental projects, and local cultural events. Programs like Student Voice initiatives and partnerships with organisations such as The Smith Family or Landcare Victoria empower students to contribute meaningfully to their communities. These experiences teach empathy, civic responsibility, and the value of teamwork, while giving students a sense of purpose and pride in making a positive impact.

Regional Victoria offers unique opportunities for learning beyond the classroom. Outdoor education programs in the Grampians, the Dandenong Ranges, and along the Murray River allow students to engage with nature, build resilience, and develop leadership skills through activities such as hiking, canoeing, and team challenges. These programs foster problem-solving, cooperation, and self-confidence, and they give students a deeper appreciation for Victoria’s diverse landscapes and the environment.

Victorian schools also embrace extracurricular clubs and special interest groups as part of holistic education. Robotics clubs, debating teams, environmental committees, and cultural societies enable students to explore their passions and develop specialised skills. Participation in these activities complements formal learning, encourages innovation, and promotes critical thinking. It also strengthens social bonds, as students collaborate with peers who share similar interests, forming connections that often last a lifetime.

The benefits of learning beyond the classroom are significant. Students engaged in sports, arts, and community projects often show higher levels of motivation, improved academic outcomes, and enhanced socialemotional skills. They learn to manage time effectively, communicate clearly, and work collaboratively, skills that are increasingly important in today’s rapidly changing world. Victorian schools understand that these experiences are not “extras” but essential elements of a comprehensive education.

Schools also recognise the role of partnerships in extending learning opportunities. Collaboration with local sports clubs, arts organisations, cultural institutions, and community groups allows students to experience real world applications of their skills. For example, a partnership with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra or Arts Centre Melbourne may provide students with masterclasses or performance opportunities, while connections with local councils and charities enable meaningful community engagement projects. These collaborations enrich school programs, expose students to diverse pathways, and inspire ambition beyond the classroom.

Parents and carers are vital partners in supporting learning beyond the classroom. By encouraging children to participate in sports teams, music ensembles, or volunteering opportunities, families help reinforce the value of a balanced education. Schools across Victoria often host familyinclusive events, performances, and showcases, strengthening the link between home, school, and community.

In essence, Victorian schools understand that education is about preparing students for life, not just exams. Sport, arts, and community involvement cultivate resilience, empathy, creativity, and leadership, qualities that academic lessons alone cannot fully develop. By investing in programs that extend learning

By encouraging children to participate in sports teams, music ensembles, or volunteering opportunities, families help reinforce the value of a balanced education.

beyond the classroom, schools are equipping students with the skills, confidence, and values needed to navigate the challenges and opportunities of the modern world.

Learning beyond the classroom ensures that education is vibrant, engaging, and inclusive. Whether it’s scoring a winning goal, performing in a school play, or planting trees in the local park, these experiences help students discover their potential, pursue their passions, and contribute positively to the community. In doing so, schools are shaping not just scholars, but well-rounded, capable, and compassionate citizens ready to make their mark on the world.

Our vision is that young people feel connected to our school and take pride in being a student here. They develop into inquisitive, literate and numerate life-long learners with a strong sense of community.

We deliver a rich curriculum that motivates students to be engaged in their academic learning. Student data is used to inform and support both academic and wellbeing needs.

We provide a nurturing learning environment that inspires high academic expectations and prioritises health and wellbeing to ensure each student feels safe, valued and respected as an equal member of our school community.

Grade 6 to Year 7 Transition

We put significant efforts into Year 7 transition because we know how important it is. The transition programs we conduct as students move from Grade 6 to Year 7 provide us with a general overview of each student’s learning abilities, strengths, interests and challenges. We utilise this data to offer additional supports in Literacy and Numeracy, and to ensure that each student is extended to their fullest ability. Students are supported with multiple visits, additional small group afternoons, primary school visits by school leaders and the support of our professional wellbeing team.

Student Leadership Program

Student leaders across the College are formally trained to lead their peers and the community. Students from all year levels are provided with leadership opportunities.

Deaf Facility

At Charles La Trobe P-12 College we provide access to education for all students. Our Deaf Facility, established in 1984, provides highly individualised programs for students with a bilateral, sensoryneural moderate to profound hearing loss.

La Trobe University

Students at our College excel by embracing

opportunities provided through our official partnership with La Trobe University. Students have access to university facilities and participate in university programs.

Quantum Victoria

Quantum Victoria is a specialist Science and Maths centre that is an integral part of Charles La Trobe College delivering programs in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM).

Clubs & Extra-curricula

We know that the events that young people remember when they look back on their time at school are often those moments that were life-changing, or brought them into contact with a new life-time friend. These moments frequently fall outside of normal class. We are proud of our Extra-curricular program.

Soccer Academy

In 2023 we established our Boys & Girls Soccer Academy. Intended for Year 7 & 8 students, the academy is designed to support positive behaviour, academic effort, strong school engagement, improved attendance and powerful adult-student relationships.

Our college is a diverse and vibrant organisation, where we ensure each part of the organisation thrives as a unique setting, while building powerful connections to each other. Regardless of the setting, we are committed to providing enrichment education experiences for all our students.

We pride ourselves on being a community that welcomes all students and families.

We support students to develop strong interpersonal and social capabilities as well as to strive to attain academic achievement. The education programs on offer across the College enable each student to achieve to their full potential as teachers personalise learning to meet the individual needs, interests and abilities of all students. Our goal is for all students to become self-directed learners who are able to take responsibility for their learning, both at and beyond school.

High-Ability Education

Empowering Victoria’s High-Ability Students

“High Ability students are the next generation of leaders, problem solvers and innovators. Society as a whole will benefit from these students being given every opportunity to reach their full potential.” — Parliamentary Inquiry into Gifted and Talented Students

The Centre for Higher Education Studies (CHES) was established in 2023 to support and nurture high-ability students during their senior secondary years in Victorian government schools. CHES complements existing programs like the Victorian High Ability Program (VHAP) and the new Year 9 and 10 Advanced Maths Camps by offering extension, enrichment, and acceleration opportunities for high-ability learners.

Recognising the unique challenges faced by high-ability students, CHES is dedicated to fostering their talents and helping them contribute meaningfully to the world while ensuring their wellbeing and personal fulfillment. Navigating the balance between academic achievement, personal growth, extracurricular activities, and social responsibilities can be challenging for students.

To address these complexities, CHES has a “hy-flex“ learning model that allows students from metropolitan, rural, and disadvantaged backgrounds to access advanced universitylevel subjects without leaving their local communities.

We collaboratively develop Individual Achievement Plans with our VCE students to align their studies with personal aspirations, support their wellbeing, and manage workload effectively. Students consistently report strong connections with peers here within a supportive statewide community of high-achieving students.

In addition to supporting academic achievement, here at CHES, we aim to enable students to apply their talents toward meaningful contributions out in the world. Our partnerships with leading Victorian universities enable us to offer Higher Education Studies courses across diverse fields such as sciences (astronomy, biology,

physics, psychology), humanities (history, politics, philosophy), business (accounting, marketing, public relations), technology (information technology, space industry, sustainable development), education, health sciences, law, and climate change.

These university courses are complemented by the VCE subjects we offer — Extended Investigation, Algorithmics, English Language, and Specialist Mathematics — in terms of equipping students with the critical thinking, problem-solving, and research skills needed to address significant local and global challenges.

CHES serves as a bridge between school and university and fosters a community where high-ability students cultivate curiosity, responsibility, and ethical leadership.

By meeting the diverse needs of highability learners, we aim to empower students not only to excel in VCE but also to lead fulfilling lives and contribute positively to the world beyond school.

BRAYBROOK COLLEGE

Congratulations to the CLASS OF 2025

Braybrook College is a proudly multicultural, single campus school with a strong academic reputation offering extensive programs from Years 7 - 12. Our underpinning philosophy is that students should have opportunities to develop their skills to the optimum level. Students are supported across a broad range of areas and the more talented students have the opportunity to be selected for one of our advanced classes.

Our college is the ideal size to provide the programs required to meet the varied needs of students: academic opportunities which will take students on to University Courses or Vocational Educational Training; Music and Instrumental Music through to Year 12; extensive Sports and Outdoor Education programs along with a support structure that encourages students to strive for individual excellence. This breadth of opportunity has resulted in some outstanding results in recent years where our VCE performance has regularly been above the state average. Clearly, the individual attention and tuition Braybrook College provides students, especially in the senior years, results in excellent outcomes including a full range of post-secondary options.

Whilst focusing on the learning outcomes for students our push to provide modern equipment and facilities is evident. Each year we aim to complete at least one

major building project. In recent years these have included a state of the art Science Centre, the re-modelling of our gymnasium and a new Art Precinct. Our next project, beginning this year, is the building of an auditorium/lecture theatre. Additionally, the college has prioritised information communication technology. We have a ‘Bring Your Own Device’ program across all year levels as well as computer laboratories for specialist subjects. Teachers and students also have wide access to electronic data projectors and/or interactive whiteboards installed in all rooms throughout the college. The parent community is able to easily communicate with the school via our online parent portal (Compass).

The college is proud of the way in which parents, students and staff work together to ensure an ongoing commitment to achieving excellence. We pride ourselves on being able to offer personalised attention in a safe, secure environment.

If you would like to enquire about the college programs contact the Assistant Principals, Ms Arlene Bailey, Ms Mary Liokos or Mr Sean McMahon on 9312 2900.

Calm Minds, Confident Learners

IN the fast-paced world of childhood and adolescence, children face more pressures than ever before. From academic expectations to social challenges and the constant presence of digital media, many students experience stress and anxiety at levels that can affect their learning and wellbeing. Recognising this, schools are increasingly turning to mindfulness programs as a practical, evidence-based approach to help students develop calm minds, emotional resilience, and confidence in their learning.

Mindfulness, in its simplest form, is the practice of paying purposeful attention to the present moment, without judgment. For children and young people, this can mean noticing their thoughts, feelings, and bodily sensations while learning to respond thoughtfully rather than react impulsively. Research shows that mindfulness can improve concentration, emotional regulation, and social skills, as well as reduce anxiety and stress benefits that directly support learning outcomes and personal development.

Victorian schools have embraced mindfulness across all year levels, from Prep through to secondary schooling. Programs are designed to fit seamlessly into the school day, often incorporated into classroom routines, recess activities, or structured wellbeing sessions. Initiatives such as Smiling Mind, an Australian digital mindfulness platform, provide teachers and students with ageappropriate guided exercises that focus on breathing, awareness, and reflection. Schools also integrate mindfulness into broader socialemotional learning frameworks, helping students develop empathy, self-awareness, and resilience alongside academic skills.

Introducing mindfulness in the early years of schooling is particularly valuable. Younger children are naturally curious and open to new experiences, making this an ideal time to build habits of attention and self regulation. Simple techniques, such as guided breathing exercises, “listening walks,” or quiet reflection at the start of the day, can help children settle, focus, and transition smoothly into learning. These strategies not only reduce stress but also foster a sense of safety and routine, creating an environment where children feel ready to engage and explore.

Mindfulness, in its simplest form, is the practice of paying purposeful attention to the present moment, without judgment.

For older students, mindfulness programs can address the unique pressures of adolescence. Secondary school students often face increased academic demands, social challenges, and questions about their future. Mindfulness offers practical tools to manage stress, regulate emotions, and maintain perspective during high-pressure periods, such as exams or performance assessments. Techniques like body scans, mindful movement, and reflective journaling help students stay grounded, reduce mental fatigue, and enhance focus, supporting both wellbeing and learning.

A key strength of mindfulness in schools is it’s accessibility. Mindfulness does not require special equipment or extensive training; it can be adapted to suit different age groups, abilities, and classroom environments. Teachers receive professional development to incorporate mindfulness into daily routines, and programs are often reinforced with digital resources, printed materials, and school wide initiatives. This flexibility ensures that mindfulness can become part of the school culture, rather than a stand alone activity, embedding calm, focus, and resilience into everyday learning.

Mindfulness also benefits social interactions. When students practise awareness and selfregulation, they are better equipped to navigate conflicts, understand the feelings of others, and respond with empathy. Classroom climates improve as students develop patience, respect, and cooperative skills. Schools report that mindfulness contributes to more harmonious learning environments, where students feel supported and valued, and teachers can focus on teaching rather than managing stress-related behaviour.

Parents and carers are essential partners in supporting mindfulness beyond the classroom. Victorian schools often provide workshops, resources, and guidance to families, helping them understand and reinforce mindfulness practices at home. Simple activities, such as shared breathing exercises or mindful listening games, encourage continuity and consistency, allowing children to integrate these skills into their everyday lives. This collaborative approach ensures that mindfulness is not just a school-based intervention but a shared journey towards wellbeing.

The benefits of mindfulness extend beyond immediate emotional regulation. Students who practise mindfulness regularly develop long-term resilience, enhanced attention, and improved coping strategies. They become more confident learners, capable of tackling challenges with a clear mind and a steady sense of self. By prioritising mindfulness, schools are equipping children with lifelong skills that support mental health, academic success, and personal growth.

In Victoria, mindfulness programs are part of a broader commitment to student wellbeing. Schools are recognising that academic achievement and emotional health are inseparable; children learn best when they feel safe, supported, and able to manage their thoughts and feelings. By introducing mindfulness into the school years, educators

provide students with practical tools to navigate life’s challenges, reduce stress, and cultivate focus, creativity, and confidence.

Getting started with mindfulness in schools can be simple and effective when approached gradually. Begin with short exercises, such as two to five minutes of guided breathing or mindful listening at the start of class, and look for ways to integrate mindfulness into existing routines, including classroom transitions, recess reflections, or end-of-day wind-downs. Digital supports, such as Smiling Mind or the Mindfulness in Schools Project, offer structured programs tailored to different age groups, helping both teachers and students engage consistently. Involving families by sharing strategies and resources allows mindfulness to be reinforced at home, while promoting a school-wide culture of mindfulness encourages staff, students, and community members to embrace these practices collectively, embedding them into the school’s values.

Mindfulness is more than a technique, it is a mindset. For Victorian schools, it represents a commitment to nurturing calm, confident learners who are equipped to face both academic and personal challenges with resilience. By supporting children to cultivate awareness, emotional regulation, and focus, schools are helping young people develop the skills, confidence, and wellbeing they need to thrive in school and beyond.

Think Before You Click

IN today’s digital age, children are growing up in a world vastly different from that of previous generations. From smartphones and tablets to social media and online gaming, technology offers incredible opportunities for learning, creativity, and connection. Yet it also introduces risks, making it essential for parents, schools, and communities to equip children with the knowledge and skills to navigate the online world safely and responsibly. Teaching kids boundaries online is no longer optional, it’s a fundamental part of growing up.

Children are spending more time online than ever before. According to recent studies, Australian children aged 8 and 12 spend an average of two to three hours online daily, while teenagers can spend upwards of five hours a day engaged with digital content. With this increased exposure comes a greater likelihood of encountering online risks such as cyberbullying, inappropriate content, privacy breaches, and online predators. Victorian schools recognise that building digital literacy and establishing clear boundaries are essential strategies for keeping children safe while fostering positive online experiences.

Digital boundaries involve understanding what is appropriate to share, how to interact respectfully, and recognising potential dangers. For younger children, this often starts with basic rules around screen time, appropriate websites, and supervised use. Parents and educators can encourage children to ask questions when they see something confusing or upsetting online, reinforcing a culture of openness and trust. Schools across Victoria incorporate digital citizenship lessons into their curriculum, teaching children to respect themselves and others, understand privacy settings, and think critically about the content they encounter.

For older students, the conversation expands to include social media, online friendships, and digital reputation. Teenagers often underestimate how permanent online content can be and how quickly it can spread. Schools teach students to set personal

boundaries, such as limiting sharing of location information, photos, or private details, and encourage them to consider the impact of their online interactions. Programs like eSmart Schools, widely adopted across Victoria, provide structured resources and training for students, teachers, and parents, helping schools promote responsible online behaviour, cyber safety, and resilience against digital risks.

Cyberbullying is another critical area where boundaries are essential. Students need to recognise that they have the right to set limits on online interactions, block or report harmful content, and seek help when needed. Victorian schools provide access to trained counsellors and digital safety programs to help students develop coping strategies, understand empathy online, and respond effectively to negative experiences. Promoting a supportive school culture where students feel safe to speak up is vital in preventing and addressing cyberbullying incidents.

Parents and carers are key partners in teaching digital boundaries. Open communication about online habits, sharing experiences, and setting household rules around screen time and device use help children feel guided rather than restricted. Families are encouraged to co-create family agreements on safe online use, monitor online activity appropriately, and celebrate positive online experiences. Tools such as parental controls, privacy settings, and screen time limits can provide structure, but they are most effective when combined with conversations that teach children to make wise choices independently.

Victorian schools are also introducing innovative programs to engage students in active learning about online safety. Workshops, interactive games, and digital literacy projects allow children to explore concepts like digital footprints, identity management, and ethical online behaviour in practical, age-appropriate ways. By combining knowledge, discussion, and reallife scenarios, these programs help students internalise safe online habits while building critical thinking skills that extend beyond the screen.

Cultural awareness is another important aspect. Many students engage with global online communities, which can expose them to diverse perspectives but also to culturally insensitive or harmful content. Schools encourage students to recognise and respect differences online, setting boundaries that promote inclusivity and respect while protecting themselves from negative influences. This approach helps children develop digital empathy, a skill as important as traditional social-emotional learning.

The benefits of teaching kids online boundaries are clear. Students who understand how to navigate the digital world safely are more confident, resilient, and

capable of making informed decisions. They are empowered to enjoy the benefits of technology, learning, creativity, and connection without unnecessary risk. Importantly, these skills are lifelong, equipping children and teenagers to manage future challenges in an increasingly digital society.

Schools, families, and communities are working together to ensure children grow up safe, smart, and responsible online. By prioritising digital literacy, setting clear boundaries, and promoting open communication, young people learn to respect themselves and others, protect their privacy, and engage positively in the online world. Technology will always be a part of growing up, but with guidance, children can enjoy it safely and confidently.

Teaching kids boundaries online is not about restriction it is about empowerment. By providing knowledge, tools, and support, Victorian schools and families help students navigate the digital landscape with confidence, making choices that keep them safe, connected, and responsible. In doing so, children become not only competent users of technology but thoughtful, resilient, and ethical digital citizens of the future.

School & Family Connections

EDUCATION is more than what happens inside the classroom. Schools are increasingly recognised as central hubs for families and communities, providing support that extends beyond academics. By fostering strong connections with families, local organisations, and community networks, schools help students thrive socially, emotionally, and academically. These “community connections” are vital in creating environments where children feel supported, engaged, and motivated to succeed.

Victorian schools understand that children’s learning does not happen in isolation. Families play a central role in a child’s development, and schools actively encourage parental involvement from the earliest years. From Prep orientation sessions to parent/ teacher conferences and workshops, families are welcomed as partners in the educational journey. This collaboration ensures that students receive consistent guidance at home and at school, helping them develop positive habits, resilience, and confidence.

Early engagement is particularly important. In the early learning and primary years, schools offer programs designed to support social-emotional development, literacy, and numeracy. These programs often involve families directly, with workshops, reading programs, and interactive events that give parents practical tools to support learning at home. Schools also provide guidance for

families navigating challenges such as learning difficulties, behavioural concerns, or social-emotional issues, connecting them with specialists and community services as needed.

Secondary schools continue this focus on partnership and support, recognising the complex challenges that adolescents face. Schools provide counselling services, student wellbeing programs, and mentoring opportunities, offering students the guidance they need to manage academic pressures, social challenges, and personal growth. By working closely with families, schools ensure that support is consistent, timely, and tailored to the needs of each student.

Beyond individual support, schools build links with community organisations to extend learning and wellbeing opportunities. Partnerships with local councils, libraries, sports clubs, arts centres, and cultural organisations enrich the curriculum and provide students with practical, hands on experiences. For example, students may participate in environmental projects with local Landcare groups, collaborate with performing arts organisations, or engage in volunteer programs that develop leadership, empathy, and civic responsibility. These connections help children understand their role in the wider community, fostering a sense of belonging and purpose.

Victorian schools also prioritise inclusivity and equity through community engagement. Programs supporting students from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, Indigenous communities, or those with additional learning needs ensure that every child has access to resources and opportunities. Schools work with local agencies to provide language support, mentoring, and specialised learning programs, creating pathways for all students to succeed. This inclusive approach strengthens both the school and the broader community, promoting understanding, acceptance, and mutual respect.

Technology has further enhanced schools’ ability to connect with families and communities. School portals, apps, and digital newsletters allow parents to stay informed about learning programs, events, and student progress. Online forums and virtual workshops also enable greater participation, particularly for families in regional or remote areas. This increased communication helps families feel engaged, supported, and empowered to contribute to their child’s education.

Mental health and wellbeing are central to community connections. Victorian schools integrate social-emotional learning into the curriculum, provide access to psychologists and wellbeing staff, and run programs that promote resilience, stress management, and positive relationships. By partnering with families and local mental health organisations such as Headspace, schools ensure students have access to timely, effective support when challenges arise. These partnerships also empower families with strategies to nurture wellbeing at home, reinforcing the school’s efforts and creating a consistent support network for students.

Events and extracurricular activities further strengthen the bond between schools, families, and the community. School fetes, sporting carnivals, cultural performances, and open days allow families to engage actively with the school environment. Students benefit from seeing their achievements recognised, while families gain a greater sense of connection, understanding, and pride in their child’s learning journey. These shared experiences help foster a strong, supportive school culture that values collaboration, respect, and

Schools also provide guidance for families navigating challenges such as learning difficulties, behavioural concerns, or socialemotional issues, connecting them with specialists and community services as needed.

community spirit.

In essence, community connections transform schools into more than just educational institutions, they become safe, nurturing, and inclusive environments where students can flourish. By actively engaging families, partnering with local organisations, and providing comprehensive support programs, Victorian schools ensure that students are not only equipped with academic skills but also with the social, emotional, and practical tools needed to succeed in life.

The strength of schools lies in their ability to bring together families, students, and communities in a shared commitment to learning and wellbeing. When schools, families, and local organisations work together, students thrive academically, socially, and emotionally. These connections create a foundation for confident, resilient, and engaged learners who are prepared to contribute positively to society.

Community connections are more than an educational strategy, they are a philosophy that underpins the success of students across Victoria. By prioritising relationships, support, and collaboration, schools are helping children and young people navigate their educational journey with confidence, security, and a sense of belonging, ensuring that every student has the opportunity to reach their full potential.

St Albans Secondary College has regularly been recognised as a high performing school. In studies undertaken by the Department of Education and the University of Melbourne we were well above state benchmarks in all measures. These outcomes, together with excellent attendance rates, continued growth in students' literacy and numeracy skills, and significant improvement in students' sense of connectedness and safety, are a testament to the combined efforts of staff, families, and students.

Our commitment to foster the academic and personal development of each student, to provide a high-quality education, and to guarantee a broad range of programs to challenge and enrich all students, is a significant factor in these achievements. Our Attendance Policy of 90%, close monitoring of student absences, and effective communication with parents ensure that the importance of regular attendance for successful student learning is well embedded in the school culture.

The SEAL (Select Entry Accelerated Learning) program is offered to challenge and motivate gifted and talented students from Year 7 right

through to Year 12. Additionally, enrichment electives are offered from Year 9, and VCE subjects are available to selected students from Year 10. Our top achievers are supported with scholarships, as well as university mentoring programs including the Kwong Lee Dow Scholars’ program, and they consistently gain entry into top level tertiary courses.

A focus on positive, respectful relationships as an essential part of a safe, enjoyable learning environment is an essential aspect of the College's culture, as is our strategy of enhancing student voice and leadership across the school and providing a rich extracurricular program. Activities include a comprehensive instrumental music program, drama and music production, public speaking and debating, writers' workshops, a camps program, sports teams and carnivals, a House system, and a range of student clubs.

Our vision for wellbeing is to support all members of our school community to develop a resilient mindset by striving to ensure that everyone feels Connected, Protected and Respected. The development of a comprehensive allied health team approach to student wellbeing, recent work on resilient mindsets, and further strengthening student wellbeing programs have been important in fostering engagement, positive behaviour, and respectful relationships.

St Albans Secondary College is a community where staff and parents work together with, and for the benefit of, students. Staff are deeply committed to the academic progress, and personal development and wellbeing of each student.

Top Local Schools for Every Age

CHOOSING the right school is one of the most important decisions a family can make. In Victoria, local government schools offer a diverse range of programs and opportunities that cater to children of all ages, from the early years of Prep to secondary education. These schools are designed to support academic growth, foster social and emotional wellbeing, and encourage students to develop the skills they need to thrive in an ever changing world. Understanding what local government schools offer can help families make informed choices for every stage of a child’s educational journey.

The journey begins with Prep, where children are introduced to formal schooling in a nurturing environment. Government primary schools focus on creating a safe, supportive, and stimulating setting where children can develop essential skills in literacy, numeracy, and social interaction. Many schools provide structured programs alongside play-based learning, recognising that children learn best when curiosity and creativity are encouraged.

Early learning initiatives often include programs to support social-emotional development, preparing children to manage emotions, build friendships, and navigate the classroom environment confidently. Schools also offer specialist support for children with additional learning needs, ensuring every child has access to opportunities that suit their unique strengths and abilities. Parent involvement is highly valued, with schools offering workshops, orientation sessions, and regular communication to help families engage in their child’s learning from the start.

As children progress into the upper primary years, government schools continue to emphasise a balance between academic achievement and personal growth. Students are encouraged to take on greater responsibility for their learning while exploring a broader curriculum that includes science, technology, arts, and physical education. Many schools offer specialist programs in areas such as music, drama, languages, and sports, allowing students to discover their passions and talents.

Many schools offer specialist programs in areas such as music, drama, languages, and sports, allowing students to discover their passions and talents.

During this stage, social and emotional learning remains a priority. Schools provide programs to build resilience, teamwork, and problem solving skills, ensuring students are prepared to handle the challenges that come with adolescence. Leadership opportunities, peer mentoring, and extracurricular activities help students develop confidence, communication skills, and a sense of belonging within their school community.

Government secondary schools focus on preparing students for both academic and vocational pathways. The curriculum expands to include a wide range of subjects, including English, mathematics, science, humanities, and technology, as well as opportunities for students to specialise in areas of interest. Programs such as the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE), Vocational Education and Training (VET), and the Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL) provide flexible pathways tailored to individual student goals. Beyond the classroom, secondary schools emphasise wellbeing and personal development. Counselling services, mentoring programs, and student leadership initiatives support mental health and social skills. Schools also encourage participation in sports, arts, and community engagement projects, helping students build teamwork, resilience, and empathy. These experiences not only enrich learning but also equip students with life skills that are critical for success beyond school.

One of the unique strengths of government schools is their connection to the local community. Schools work closely with families, local organisations, and support services to create a network that nurtures students academically, socially, and emotionally. Partnerships with community groups, cultural organisations, and sports clubs provide students with additional learning opportunities, from music programs and art exhibitions to environmental projects and volunteering.

Inclusive practices are central to local government schools, ensuring that all students, regardless of background, ability, or circumstance, have access to a high-quality education. Programs for students with disabilities, English as an Additional Language (EAL) support, and targeted literacy and numeracy initiatives help every child reach their potential. This focus on equity and inclusion ensures that every student is supported to grow into a confident, capable learner.

Selecting a school involves more than examining academic results. Families should consider the school culture, extracurricular offerings, specialist programs, wellbeing support, and community engagement.

Visiting schools, attending open days, and speaking with staff and other parents can provide valuable insights into the learning environment and the opportunities available. Many schools also offer transition programs to help children settle in, making the shift from early learning to primary, or primary to secondary, a smoother and more confident experience.

Local government schools offer comprehensive, inclusive, and high quality education for children of all ages. From the early years to secondary education, these schools provide strong academic foundations while fostering creativity, resilience, and social skills. With supportive teachers, specialist programs, and connections to the local community, students are equipped to succeed academically, socially, and personally.

For families navigating the choices available, understanding the strengths and offerings of local government schools can help ensure every child finds the right fit, enabling them to thrive at every stage of their educational journey. Education is more than learning in the classroom, it’s about nurturing confident, capable, and curious learners who are ready to make their mark on the world.

Belle Vue Primary School

Belle Vue Primary School: A Confident Start in a Caring Community

CHOOSING the right primary school is one of the most important decisions families make as their child prepares for Prep. Parents want a school that delivers strong academic foundations while nurturing confidence, wellbeing and a genuine sense of belonging. Belle Vue Primary School offers that balance — a supportive, forward-thinking environment where children are encouraged to grow academically, socially and emotionally from day one.

Located in Melbourne’s leafy eastern suburbs, Belle Vue has earned a reputation for educational excellence grounded in a warm, child-centred approach. For families navigating the transition from kindergarten to primary school, the focus is clear: building confident learners who feel safe, capable and valued.

A Smooth Transition to Prep

Starting school is a significant milestone, often accompanied by excitement and nerves. Belle Vue prioritises a calm and structured transition program designed to help children feel comfortable before their first official day.

Orientation sessions, classroom visits and opportunities to meet teachers and peers allow children to develop familiarity and a sense of belonging early.

Importantly, the school recognises that readiness extends beyond letters and numbers. Confidence, independence and emotional security are equally vital. By working closely with families and local early learning centres, teachers ensure each child’s strengths and needs are understood from the outset.

Strong Foundations for Lifelong Learning

Belle Vue places high-quality teaching at the centre of its approach. Literacy and numeracy are prioritised in the early years through structured, evidence-based programs that build essential skills step by step. Targeted instruction, regular assessment and smallgroup learning allow teachers to support and extend every student appropriately.

Wellbeing and Community at the Core

Academic success thrives in a positive, inclusive environment. Belle Vue embeds student wellbeing into everyday practice, explicitly teaching skills such as resilience, empathy and emotional regulation. Clear expectations and respectful relationships create a culture where children feel secure and supported.

Starting School in Victoria

STARTING school is a major milestone for children and families. In Victoria, this transition is both exciting and sometimes overwhelming. As a parent, understanding how the system works, what to prepare for, and how to support your child can make all the difference. This guide breaks down what you need to know to confidently help your child begin their education journey in Victoria.

In Victoria, the school year generally starts in late January or early February. Children are eligible to start “Prep” (the first year of primary school) if they turn five by 30 April in the year they begin. For example, if a child turns five on 1 March, they can start school that same year; if their fifth birthday is on 1 May, they would start the following year.

It’s important to enrol your child at your local government, Catholic or independent school well before the school year begins. Many schools have specific enrollment deadlines, and early registration helps secure a place.

Most Victorian schools offer an orientation program in the term before school starts. These sessions allow children and parents to: visit the classroom, meet teachers and school staff, learn about daily routines, participate in play-based activities. These orientation sessions help children feel familiar with the environment, reducing anxiety on the first day.

Victorian schooling is divided into three main stages: Primary School (Prep–Year 6) typically ages 5 to 12, Secondary School (Year 7–Year 12) typically ages 12 to 18 & Senior Secondary Certificate (VCE, VCAL, or VET pathways) optional specialised pathways in Years 11 and 12

Prep is focused on literacy, numeracy, social skills, and developing confidence. The emphasis in early years is play-based learning, which supports cognitive, emotional, and physical development.

Before your child starts school, parents must provide an Immunisation History Statement from the Australian Immunisation Register. While immunisation isn’t compulsory for school attendance in Victoria, schools do record immunisation status and may follow up if vaccinations are incomplete.

Schools also need up to date medical and emergency contact information. If your child has allergies, asthma, diabetes, or other health needs, speak to the school early to make a health management plan.

Preparing your child both emotionally and practically can make starting school much smoother. Here are a few simple ways to help:

Build Independence: Encourage everyday self-help skills such as putting on shoes, managing lunchboxes, opening containers, and practising toileting and handwashing routines.

Talk Positively About School: Focus on the exciting parts of school like making new friends, playtime, and learning new things. Read books about starting school, visit the school environment by walking or driving past, and attend orientation sessions together.

Establish Routines: In the weeks before school begins, start practising morning and bedtime routines. Making lunch and snack times part of your child’s daily routine can also help them adjust.

The start of school focuses on creating relationships between students and teachers, helping children settle into routines, introducing foundational skills in reading, writing, and counting. Teachers observe how each child interacts and learns, adjusting activities to support development.

Victorian schools use different communication tools (newsletters, apps, emails, diaries) to keep parents informed. Regular communication helps you understand what your child is learning, know about school events and stay informed about any concerns. Don’t hesitate to talk with your child’s teacher if you have questions or concerns.

If your child has additional learning needs, Victorian government schools provide access to specialist teachers, support staff, speech therapists, and psychologists. Early identification and support lead to better outcomes. Speak with the school if you notice learning or behavioural challenges. Community health services, such as maternal and child health nurses, can also help with developmental questions.

Starting school comes with some costs. Typical expenses include school uniform (often compulsory), school supplies (pencils, notebooks), library bags and art smocks and excursion fees. Government schools may ask for a “voluntary contribution” to support resources and programs. These contributions are optional, and families can ask for a

Speak with the school if you notice learning or behavioural challenges. Community health services, such as maternal and child health nurses, can also help with developmental questions.

payment plan or waiver if needed. Independent and Catholic schools have their own fee structures.

Decide on your child’s way to get to school. They can walk or ride, while practicing road safety skills; use the school bus; or take public transport (children aged 5–15 travel free on weekdays in Victoria with a child myki card). If driving, always observe school zone speed limits and follow road safety rules.

Parents can support their children by being patient, understanding that every child settles at their own pace. It’s important to celebrate achievements, no matter how small, as these successes build confidence and motivation. Encouraging friendships through playdates or shared activities helps children develop social skills and self-assurance. Staying involved by participating in school events and parent groups also strengthens the child’s connection to their learning environment and fosters a sense of community.

Starting school is a significant and exciting transition. With the right preparation, clear communication with your child and their school, and understanding of the system, you can help your child start their educational journey with confidence and joy.

Enfield Dr, Bayswater VIC 3153 (03) 9729 2862

Principal Mr Bret Mottrom

BAYSWATER SOUTH PRIMARY SCHOOL

www.baysouthps.edu.au

Bayswater South is a co-educational Government School in the Eastern suburbs of Melbourne. One of the few truly bilingual primary schools in Victoria, we have a proud history of over 30 years of delivering a unique English/German bilingual program.

Our mission is to embrace diversity and develop global citizenship through a vibrant learning community. We do this using our three pillars – Bilingual Education, IB – Primary Years Programme and a schoolwide approach to Wellbeing; leading the way in best practice teaching and learning, with a focus on supporting the academic progress and personal development of each student.

This difference, or addition, to a standard Government school education, is what makes us stand out as a leading choice for your child’s education.

Why bilingual?

We strongly believe that every child deserves a bilingual education.

Language teachers and educational psychologists have long held the view that learning another language increases and enhances students’ deductive and problemsolving skills. Having frequent practice in working out meaning, making links, and drawing conclusions in the language class, enhances these skills in a broader sense, in other areas of the curriculum and in life in general. Knowledge of more than one language has long-term cultural, social and economic benefits. Tolerance, respect and cooperation are all improved through bilingual education, while being bilingual enhances future job prospects.

What is the IB – Primary Years Programme?

Bayswater South Primary School is proud to be an accredited IB World School offering the Primary Years Programme (PYP).

At Bayswater South we align our vision and mission with that of the IB, in which we strive to, ‘develop inquiring, knowledgeable

and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect’.

As a bilingual school, we are in the unique position within Australia to develop students who are multilingual, internationally minded and who are driven to take action in the local and global community.

Our school’s curriculum framework encompasses that of the Victorian Curriculum, the IB PYP Curriculum and Bilingual Education.

Wellbeing

At Bayswater South Primary School, we value student voice, student engagement and connectedness of students and their families from Foundation to Year 6. We are:

A connected community

Bayswater South Primary School fosters strong relationships with the local German community as well as other organisations and benefits from the support of a vibrant and engaged parent community. With the ongoing contributions from our parents and local partnerships, we have been able to provide playgrounds, learning spaces, Chaplaincy, Connect Groups and a newly formed ‘German Café’, with further development to follow.

Led by students

A highlight of life at Bayswater South includes the opportunity for all students from Foundation to Year 6, to lead the school. From SRC, to student-led assembly, to student input in their learning experiences, our students develop as team playing, confident young individuals, who live out our school values of Respect, Empathy, Honesty and Teamwork. We warmly invite you to take a tour of our school, to learn more about the benefits of an education at Bayswater South Primary School.

A Strong Academic Foundation

We place a strong emphasis on achievement in English and Mathematics, supported by meaningful partnerships between students, teachers, and families. We value parental involvement and encourage participation through classroom support, open days, excursions, and school events.

In addition to core learning areas, we offer specialist programs in:

■ STEM

■ The Arts

■ Physical Education

■ Cultural Studies

■ Auslan (Sign Language)

Our Before and After School Care Program supports busy families, operating daily from 7:00–8:45 am and 3:30–6:00 pm.

Community and Student Wellbeing Community connection is central to our school culture. Events such as Community Lunches and cross-age activities foster strong relationships and a sense of belonging across year levels.

During break times, students enjoy a variety of social and recreational opportunities, including gardening, imaginative play, and sporting competitions, Lego club and Student Leadership Activities.

Our dedicated staff ensure that every child feels valued, supported, and challenged in a positive and motivating environment that promotes both academic excellence and personal growth.
