Noosa swings into Jazz Festival It’s springtime and once again Noosa becomes the beating heart of Australian jazz with the launch of the Noosa Jazz Festival on 28 August. For more than three decades world-class musicians have been coming to Noosa to entertain locals and visitors with live jazz performances on the river, in our theatres and restaurants. This is no ordinary music event: expect evening performances from the Australian Jazz Ensemble, combined with the Noosa Chorale, at the J Theatre on the opening weekend, a Sunday afternoon tribute concert, jazz in the brewery, a sunset river cruise with dinner, and an easy run of lunch and dinner concerts in local venues during the week. The festival builds to its traditional finale: the Noosa Jazz Party at The J Theatre on 5 September, a joyful jam session where musicians who have spent the week performing together finally cut loose. Restoration funds By Steve Linnell A major restoration project targeting the Noosa River estuary and Lake Weyba has received a funding boost as part of the Queensland Government’s $1.3 million investment in community-led environmental projects. The Noosa Integrated Catchment Association (NICA) is among 16 organisations across Queensland to receive funding through the State Government’s Grassroots Environmental Grants
program, which is supporting projects to restore marine plants and strengthen the health of the state’s waterways. The Noosa project will rehabilitate 43 hectares of intertidal habitat across five sites within the Noosa River estuary and lake system by removing invasive weeds, restoring biodiversity and improving soil stability. The project will also focus on reducing sediment entering Weyba Creek and the Lake Doonella seagrass beds, while planting site-spe-
cific marine and riverbank vegetation. A trial of seagrass plugs in low-flow areas with similar salinity conditions will also be undertaken to help restore important marine habitats. Across Queensland, grants of up to $100,000 are being awarded to projects stretching from Bundaberg to the Gold Coast, supporting practical initiatives to rehabilitate creek and riverbanks, restore intertidal zones, improve seagrass meadows and repair habitats damaged by erosion, flooding, invasive weeds, marine debris and rec-
reational activity. Environment Minister Andrew Powell said the funding would deliver practical environmental outcomes while empowering local communities to care for the waterways they know best. “The State Government is investing in projects that deliver real environmental outcomes for Queensland communities,” Mr Powell said.
