Scouts nest nature By Jena Carr Ocean Grove Cub Scouts will help provide safe homes for native birds in celebration of World Scout Scarf Day. The scouts will install handmade bird nesting boxes throughout Ocean Grove Park on 1 August while proudly wearing their scarves to celebrate the values of scouting. Cub Scout leader Nicole Wilson said the project provided the opportunity for the cubs to learn about conservation, teamwork, and community service.

“We’ve been collaborating with the Ocean Grove and District Men’s Shed and Ocean Grove Nature Reserve to build some bird boxes to help out the native wildlife and birds,” she said. “There’s been a lot of learning for all of us in this collaboration... and the kids were very excited to build the nesting boxes as there are no bird boxes in the park currently. “The boxes have been built in three different sizes and...how this is going to help native birds by having these safe houses to live in the park. “It’s also helping the cubs understand

that these boxes will help the wildlife come into our community as we’re giving them a safe place to live in and hopefully be around for a lot longer.” Ms Wilson said the project allowed the cubs to leave a lasting legacy for Ocean Grove, while showcasing a colourful and memorable celebration of youth in action. “Members that are in scouting are a lot more resilient to issues at school and problems that might arise at home and things like that,” she said. “It is also a safe environment where they can experience controlled failure,

where they can learn to bounce back from mistakes or when things go wrong. “Making a difference and a positive impact on the local park with this activity gives them that boost of self-esteem and resilience.” World Scout Scarf Day is held annually on 1 August and is a time for scouts around the globe to wear their scarves in public to raise awareness of scouting. Ocean Grove Cub Scouts will be putting up the bird boxes from 9am on the day, with community members welcome to come along and ask questions about scouting.
