Weddings too dear By Margie Maccoll With Noosa’s wedding permit fees almost 10 times the price of Sunshine Coast fees Noosa wedding business owners say Noosa costs do not equate to cost recovery costs which is a requirement of their calculation under Queensland law, are discouraging a lucrative industry and giving Noosa an “unwelcoming” reputation. Wedding business operators Jacqueline Gray of Noosa Wedding Organisation and Melinda Gannan of Noosa Chamber of Commerce called for a review of Noosa’s wedding permit fees when they delivered a deputation to Council’s ordinary
meeting on 16 July. Jacqueline told council the permit fees, permit terms and conditions which include a ‘no refund policy’ and ‘no exclusive use’ of the site were constantly raised by potential wedding clients who identify Noosa as “an unwelcoming place to visit”. “In 2013 a fee for a permit to marry at one of our Groves along Main Beach was $159. As of 2026, the fee is $799 – an increase of 402.5 per cent,” Jacqueline said. Council Property Manager Hayley Jamieson told Noosa Today council’s wedding permit fees were informed by reasonable cost recovery prin-
ciples and supported by Council’s Full Cost Pricing methodology. Ms Jamieson said council welcomed weddings in Noosa and recognised the important contribution they make to the local community, visitor economy and local businesses. “Our objective is to ensure wedding permit fees reflect the reasonable cost of administering the service and managing the private use of Council-managed public spaces,” she said. “The fee reflects the end-to-end costs associated with administering wedding permits, including application assessment, booking ad-
ministration, permit preparation, compliance activities where required, and a contribution towards the management and presentation of Council-managed beaches, parks and foreshores used for ceremonies.” “The higher fee applying to ceremonies within the Noosa Main Beach Foreshore Area reflects the premium nature of these locations together with the higher level of management and presentation required to maintain these highly visited public spaces while balancing private ceremonies with ongoing public access.” Continued page 6
