Night for Briohny By Glenn Fisher On 12 April this year, Sunbury mum Briohny Kerr’s life changed forever. Driving on the Monash Freeway on a Sunday, Ms Kerr was involved in a devastating car crash that tragically claimed the life of her 12-year-old son and left her with serious, life-changing injuries. Now, with the support of her family, her children’s school and the wider community, Ms Kerr and her eight-year-old daughter will at least be able to rebuild their lives without carrying a heavy fi nancial load. Both of Ms Kerr’s children attended St Anne’s Catholic Primary School in Sunbury and a planned trivia night by the
Parents, Teachers and Friends Association (PTFA) to fundraise for the school quickly turned into a much larger event to raise money for the Kerr family following the tragic accident. As well as a GoFundMe page set up by the family, St Anne’s PTFA committee members Petrece Brazelis, Clare Jackson and Rosa D’Urso quickly got to work on a ‘Night of Hope and Healing for Briohny’, a cocktail party to be held at Club Sunbury in Riddell Road on Saturday 25 July. Ms Brazelis said the fundraising event is what communities like Sunbury do for each other. “Organising the night for Briohny quickly transformed from a school event into a whole community pulling together for one of our own,” she said.
“We walked around the whole of Sunbury, we called every business in the town, and we used every connection we had to get donations.” At last count, more than 50 organisations and businesses had donated goods and services valued at $25,000, with door prizes, a silent auction, raffles and a live auction conducted by One Agency Sunbury to be held during the evening. Some of the donated goodies on offer include a travel package, Trek bike, AFL Medallion Club tickets, signed AFL and NRL memorabilia, a $500 car service, cosmetic and skin care packages, wine and spirits and even toolkits. The $100-a-head tickets include a welcome drink on arrival, food, entertainment, photo booth and a thank
you gift. But there is a 250-person limit in the function room at Club Sunbury, so you’ll need to get in quick. “Th is event is an opportunity for our community to rally around Briohny and show that she is not facing this journey alone. As they say, it takes a village,” Ms Brazelis said. Ms Kerr’s brother-in-law, Pat McKenna, told Star Weekly that she had returned home late last month after more than two months in the Alfred Hospital and a Caulfield rehabilitation centre. “Briohny is starting to walk again. She was previously in a wheelchair and then had to use a walking frame,” Mr McKenna said. Contined: Page 4.
