Hairdressers give back Wandin salon owner Nadine Amy and apprentice Hayley Stephens recently volunteered with Australian non-profit Hair Aid on a weeklong humanitarian trip to Bali. The duo visited a local orphanage, a women’s prison, a trade school, and a community centre to teach foundational and advanced haircutting skills. The program aimed to empower women and girls living in poverty by giving them vocational tools to achieve financial independence, culminating in an emotional graduation ceremony. Killara Rd calls By Mikayla van Loon The Killara Road-Maroondah Highway intersection was visited by Liberal MPs on 1 July as the local community continues to call for an upgrade. Liberal opposition leader Jess Wilson and Evelyn MP Bridget Vallence pledged a “starting point” of $20m in funding to deliver an upgrade to the notorious intersection. “This was a project that was scoped up for $20 million, and that will be our starting point,” she said.
“We believe that we can much better manage projects on cost and on delivery, so that’s something that we’ll be focused on, in terms of making sure that these projects actually do meet the budget at which they’ve been set,” Ms Wilson said. Peter Burgi, a resident of Coldstream for around 84 years and a Gruyere CFA member, said he sympathises with his Coldstream CFA counterparts who struggle to exit the station when called to a job. “How the fire trucks get out here at times, I don’t know. People just don’t take any notice of
it,” he said. As the responsible authority for the road, Star Mail posed questions to the Department of Transport about whether plans at Killara Road had been impacted by the Ingram Road proposal. No answer was given. In April this year, the Department of Transport and Planning (DTP) told Star Mail that since the initial commitment in 2019, it has conducted essential planning investigations and value engineering reviews.
The Department noted in May 2025, upon completing these assessments, that it informed the Commonwealth Government that the revised cost estimate for delivering the final project design exceeded the original funding allocation. “We will continue to work with the Commonwealth Government to assess options to upgrade the Maroondah Highway and Killara Road intersection - to improve traffic flow and journeys for families,” a spokesperson said.
