March to safety Enough is enough. Up to 300 students and staff took to the streets last Friday (26 June) to protest the ongoing road dangers around Keysborough Gardens Primary School. The march was initiated by the school’s Grade 6 captains and vice captains, Hazel, Adam, Zahra and Siena. They want a supervised school crossing on the narrow Homeleigh Road, which is dangerously congested at peak times.

They also call for flashing electronic 40km/h school zone signs and a review of parking restrictions and traffic management options, such as making the street one-way during pick-up and drop-off times. A recent incident involving a student and a car on Tyers Lane hastened calls for action, on top of several near misses since the school opened in 2020. “I just felt like it was really unsafe and dangerous for all of our students and our community

here,” Adam said. “I just felt like we needed to do something about that.” School captain Hazel finalised the campaign slogan: “Crossing the road should not take courage, give us the lines so we can flourish.” In a show of support, Victoria Police officers and Greater Dandenong Council representatives joined the protest. The school’s principal, Sherri Jenkins says the school is very proud of the Grade 6 leaders and

their efforts, including going to each classroom talking about their campaign. The ward’s councillor Isabella Do says all the residents in the area are “super concerned”. “They are people who don’t even have kids attending that school but are concerned just because of the number of cars, traffic and blind spots.” More on the story, turn to page 4
