Kids backpack appeal Cranbourne West’s Backpacks 4 VIC Kids has raised $99,636 so far through its third annual Giving Day appeal, as it works towards a $200,000 target. Founder and CEO Sally Beard said rising demand and a 16 per cent cost increase had stretched the charity. Since 2014, it has delivered more than 72,000 packs and 35,000 extra items, supporting children entering care, crisis accommodation and homelessness services. Full story page 10

South east shines South East locals have been recognised in this year’s King’s Birthday Honours for decades of service across engineering, education, health, sport and community advocacy. Pearcedale engineer Robert Lehunt received a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for service to the plastics industry, after more than 40 years in pipe infrastructure, standards and consulting.

Mr Lehunt has been involved with Standards Australia since about 1987 and has served on 11 committees responsible for 73 Australian and New Zealand standards. He said he first thought the call from Canberra was a prank. “I was sceptical about it, but he knew too much,” he said.

Other recipients included Berwick medical scientist Alex Laslowski, Narre Warren cricket administrator Mick Hawking, social justice advocate Kuranda Seyit and former Monash Health chief executive Professor Andrew Stripp.
