Big success By Gabriella Weir and Mikayla van Loon The third Hills MND Big Freeze took place on Sunday 31 May at Paradise Valley Hotel and was described by the organisers as a “hugely successful day”. Raising funds for FightMND, the calendar event supports the charity in research into treatments for Motor Neurone Disease (MND) and improving the life and care for people living with the disease. In the winter chill, the event returned to its roots in Emerald with an ice bucket challenge and the new addition of a walk from Puffing Billy Park to Paradise Valley Hotel. Signage lined the track highlighting statistics and the achievements of FightMND and this year ten challengers volunteered to have an icy bucket poured over their heads, ranging from football club committee members to RSL presidents and community leaders. Peter Mcilwain said the council appreciate that it’s been a disruptive time for the house and for residents accessing their services. “I’d like to extend a sincere thank you on behalf of the council for everyone’s patience, understanding and flexibility while we worked through this process,” he said. Yarra Ranges Council said it plans to make essential repairs and also take the chance to make other general improvements to the building. “In addition to repairing the termite damage, we’ll install new flooring and split-system heating and cooling units, address some of the temporary fixes that have been made to the building over the

The future of Selby Community House has been green lit as the local council has fronted up to repair the site after massive termite damage was discovered at the community house late last year. Yarra Ranges Council has formally confirmed it will undertake the major repairs and improvements to save the much-loved Selby Community House building after it was shut down and then had to operate across multiple venues to continue operations. Yarra Ranges Council has said it expects oper-
ations to progressively return to the building from spring and Selby Community House shared the welcome news on 29 May via social media. Selby Community House Manager, Danielle McMinn, said the news had brought relief and hope to the community. “Council has reaffirmed their commitment to the future of Selby Community House,” she said. “They understand how important this place is to the township and the wider hills community, and they’re just as excited as we are to see it open, better than ever.” Acknowledging the disruption to staff and volunteers, Yarra Ranges Lyster ward Councillor
