World of Roberts By Shamsiya Hussainpoor Kallista Primary School students recently took a deep dive into the world of Tom Roberts - not just as an artist, but as a storyteller of Australian life. As part of the town’s centenary celebrations, the kids explored Roberts’ iconic works like ‘Shearing the Rams’ and ‘Bailed Up’, connecting national history with their own community. With guidance from long-time visual arts teacher Georgie Ruzyla, the students discovered how Roberts captured the spirit of the land and its people - and how Kallista played a special role in his story. “Some of the kids lived on Tom Roberts Road,” Ms Ruzyla said. “They could picture the land he painted, and it became real to them.” To read more, turn to page 16

‘Character lost’ By Shamsiya Hussainpoor Residents in Kalorama are raising concern over the ongoing tree removal across the Dandenong Ranges, particularly in Kalorama. They’re urging both the local council and landowners to focus on replanting rather than continuing to clear trees.

The area, still recovering from a major storm three years ago that wiped out thousands of trees, continues to see regular removals, driven by safety concerns from the council and private landowners alike. Locals said they are worried the area’s natural beauty and environmental stability are being eroded, with trees disappearing faster than

they’re being replaced. Many fear Kalorama is losing its unique character and becoming more like a typical suburban area. While the Yarra Ranges Council said removals are only done when necessary and that replanting programs are underway, community members believe not enough is being done to

restore the lost canopy. There is growing concern about the impact on local wildlife, erosion, and climate. For long-time residents, like Ron Thomas, the issue is about more than trees - it’s about protecting the Dandenongs’ identity, environment, and way of life. Read more on page 10
