Cooking up a storm Thousands flocked for a feverish feast of foods, including the smoking Turkish Grill and Kebab (pictured), at Dandenong’s inaugural Ramadan Night Market last week. The nine-night festival including 50 food stalls in Thomas Street as well as prayer services and music in Harmony Square continues until 2 April. More pictures, turn to page 14

Nuclear bombshell The Federal Election is set for 3 May, and Star News readers have emphatically spoken. In our readers survey, South East respondents seemed to overwhelmingly back the Coalition’s proposal for nuclear energy (71 per cent). Also, with a nuclear power station touted for Gippsland, most (55 per cent) supported a plant
in their local area. Cost-of-living, electricity prices, immigration, health services and roads and rail were readers’ top five issues. In other findings, cheap electricity (78 per cent) was prioritised over reduced carbon emissions.
There was also massive support for less immigration (74.5 per cent). On our readers’ election wishlist were a new Dandenong railway station, a new Palm Plaza, a link between Westall Road and Monash Freeway, a Melbourne Airport rail link, a new Dandenong Hospital emergency department and
fixing road potholes. Global security was looming as a concern for 66 per cent of respondents, as well as housing affordability (56 per cent). For more on the results, turn to page 3
