Club trailer, BBQ stolen A club dedicated to the community was left shattered after the theft of their fundraising equipment. Lowood Lions Club’s box trailer, containing their barbecue, gas bottles, eskies, and utensils was stolen from a member’s private property at Tarampa in mid February. President Yvonne Hawkins said the loss has cut off their ability to raise money for the community. “We can’t fundraise,” she said. “We’re disheartened. It’s really hard. “The motto of Lions is ‘We Serve’, and it’s very hard to serve when you haven’t got the equipment.” STORY PAGE 5

Mayoral showdowns and a new MP:
Zap, pow, voting Weekend voting saw some suprises at home, with a new mayor in Somerset, a poll that was too close to call in the Lockyer and a surprise new MP emerging in Ipswich West. By Sunday, Jason Wendt was to be the new Mayor in the Somerset Regional Council, while
in the Lockyer Valley, incumbent Mayor Tanya Milligan was not ready to declare victory, despite having 44 per cent of the preliminary votes. “I’m not celebrating yet because it just feels too close,” Cr Milligan said. “They still need to do the preferences, so we’ll see how that plays out.
The Somerset mayoral contest was a battle between Cr Wendt and his fellow council member, Sean Choat. Cr Wendt said he was humbled by the result. The biggest surprise was in the Ipswich West by-election, where the LNP’s Darren Zanow upset Labor’s Wendy Bourne.
Overcoming a 14 per cent margin, Mr Zanow had 39.59 per cent of the votes at the time of writing. “I’d like to say thank you to the people of Ipswich West for putting their faith in me,” Mr Zanow said on Sunday. VOTING COVERAGE PAGES 2, 3, 4
