Defibs in train The cardiac arrest death of a Pakenham man on board a V/Line train could trigger a monumental change in the presence of defibrillators onboard, after a Coroner’s Court inquest recommended the installation of the machines on the train service. 50-year-old Carl Anthony Van Der Kaay died after suffering a cardiac arrest on board a V/Line train on his early morning commute to work in July 2019. Those aboard the train administered resus-

Mysterious horse deaths A recent spate of sudden horse deaths across the state, including the South East, has instigated an investigation from Agriculture Victoria into this yet to be identified illness. The sudden death of 10 horses on three separate properties across the Mornington Peninsula, South East Melbourne, including Narre Warren, and South West Victoria have been confirmed to be linked to this identified illness. A Narre Warran property is one of the case sites and has been under constant stress after losing two yearlings since May, with many still currently ill. The investigation has thankfully eliminated some known diseases as the cause and from reports the mysterious illness seems to not spread rapidly. However the investigation still goes on to find it’s source. STORY PAGE 4

citation efforts and contacted emergency services, but a defibrillator was not available on board or at the station, they were told. The Coroner’s investigation confirmed that Mr Van Der Kaay died of natural causes, but recommended that defibrillators be installed on V/Line trains in response to his sudden death. As mandated under the Coroners Act 2008, V/Line has three months from the publishing of the Coroner’s report to produce a statement of action to the Coroner. STORY PAGE 3

Birthday rapist gets jail A bricklayer who “callously” raped a sleeping and heavily drunk teenager at an 18th birthday party in Pakenham has been jailed. Dylan Berry, 27, was found guilty by a Victorian County Court jury of digitally raping the victim in late 2017. In sentencing on 10 July, Judge Martine Marich accepted the victim was in a “true state of intoxication” at the time. Berry, who had earlier been among the victim’s ‘carers’ that night, later approached her on the couch and assaulted her. According to her “very credible” testimony, she told him several times to ‘stop’. STORY PAGE 3

Terry Dillon gets his hands on his 1986 premiership jumper for the first time in 37 years. 348117 Picture: SUPPLIED

37-year wait for jumper! Iconic Cora Lynn figure Terry Dillon was in a reflective mood on Saturday after coming to grips with his 1986 premiership jumper for the first time in 37 years. Dillon gave the jumper to a fan after the grand final win, with the supporter returning the fa-

mous guernsey to its original owner on the weekend. Only four players have worn the number 5 jumper at Cora Lynn in the last 53 years. Turn to Footy Shorts on page 33 to find out who those special players are...and who the supporter is that gave it back!
