Parade’s history
An early Yakkerboo Street Parade from the corner of John and Main streets.
By Corey Everitt Yakkerboo is back after a four-year Covid-induced hiatus, but this will be the first without its signature street parade. The disheartening decision was made due to the organising committee’s inability to acquire insurance that would cover the parade.
Jeanine Pushman is the secretary of the Yakkerboo Festival committee and says the decision to exclude the parade was not an easy one. “We tried our hardest to have a parade, but it just wasn’t successful,” she said. “The emotion that was in the room from the stress of making the decision, you could
have cut it with a knife.” Yakkerboo faced a small amount of time to get cover for the elaborate parade. Cardinia Shire Councillor for Bunyip Ward, Graeme Moore, another Yakkerboo stalwart, empathises with the committee’s tough decision. “I feel for the committee who had make this
choice,” he said. This is the first time in Yakkerboo’s history that there will be no parade. This happens as insurance has become increasingly costly and difficult for local event organisers. STORY PAGE 3
