It is said that the worst of times often bring out the best in us. And this year Victorians met the ever-evolving challenges of the pandemic head on. Hospitalisations and deaths were kept to low levels, however there will be pain for many families this Christmas with one less family member at the Christmas table. Together we pulled through, supported those around us and achieved over 90 per cent double vaccination levels. Vaccination has meant we can open up and live life closer to normal. Victoria is now one of the most vaccinated places on earth and for that I am proud, humbled and thankful to you. Yes, we have freedom but collectively we are responsible to each other too. I would like to thank all the frontline health workers, emergency workers, nongovernment organisations, charities and community support groups for their phenomenal efforts in helping those facing their toughest days. The Narre Warren South community sacrificed so much, cared for one another, and provided safety and warmth in times of despair. From community food banks providing hot meals to those who have stayed safe but vigilant; you all played a vital part towards a brighter future ahead. The unity of this community and the efforts of all has been the catalyst for our ability to now enjoy a return to what we love the most and the people we have missed. A sc-RUM-ptious Christmas cake recipe By Gabriella Payne With the festive season once again upon us, locals have been sharing their Christmas ideas and recipes in the lead up to the big day - and this funny one caught our eye. Longwarry residents had a good chuckle when this recipe popped up on the local Facebook noticeboard recently, and we thought we’d share it with you too - Merry Christmas! (Shared by a Longwarry local, original writer unknown): It’s that time of year and since I’ve been unofficially crowned “Fruit Cake Queen“, here is my recipe.
THE BEST XMAS CAKE RECIPE: Once again this year, I’ve had requests for my rum Christmas cake recipe so here goes. Please keep in your files as I am beginning to get tired of typing this up every year! (Made mine this morning!) Ingredients: 1 cup sugar 1 tsp. baking powder 1 cup water 1 tsp. salt 1 cup brown sugar

juice · lemon · 4nutslarge eggs · 1 bottle rum · 2 cups dried fruit ·
Method: 1. Sample a cup of rum to check quality. 2. Take a large bowl, check the rum again to be sure it is of the highest quality then repeat. 3. Turn on the electric mixer. 4. Beat one cup of butter in a large fluffy bowl. 5. Add one teaspoon of sugar. 6. Beat again. 7. At this point, it is best to make sure the rum is still OK. 8. Try another cup just in case. 9. Turn off the mixerer thingy. 10. Break two eggs and add to the bowl and chuck in the cup of dried fruit. 11. Pick the fruit up off the floor, wash it and put it in the bowl a piece at a time trying to count it. 12. Mix on the turner. 13. If the fried druit getas stuck in the beaterers, just pry it loose with a drewscriver. 14. Sample the rum to test for tonsisticity. 15. Next, sift two cups of salt, or something. 16. Check the rum. 17. Now shift the lemon juice and strain your nuts. 18. Add one table. 19. Add a spoon of sugar, or somefink. 20. Whatever you can find. 21. Greash the oven. 22. Turn the cake tin 360 degrees and try not to fall over. 23. Don’t forget to beat off the turner. 24. Finally, throw the bowl through the window. 25. Finish the rum and wipe the counter with the cat. Hallam businesses say they have been left repeatedly high and dry by long-dwelling floodwaters across Centre Road and Rimfire Drive. Most recently on Wednesday 17 November, both lanes of Centre Road were deeply submerged for three days due to overflow from the adjoining Hallam Valley flood plain. Eclipse Security Systems owner Greg Flood said local enterprises were effectively stranded from customers and deliveries. “Some of these small businesses have suffered really badly in the pandemic, and now they haven’t been able to get customers.” About seven cars were drowned in floodwaters, trucks damaged and staff ferried by 4WD to get to work. Violence dismay By Marcus Uhe The 2020-21 financial year produced some of the highest figures for sexual offences and family incidents in Victoria in the last five years, according to data from the 2020-21 Victorian Family Violence Database. A ‘family incident’ includes offences such as family violence, interfamilial-related sexual offences, and child abuse incidents attended by police, according to the Crime Statistics Agency. The database included statistics on sexual assaults in Victoria for the first time, in re-
sponse to the Victorian Government’s commitment to building an evidence base under the Family Violence Reform Rolling Action Plan. Crime Statistics Agency chief statistician Fiona Dowsley noted the value of the publication of sexual assault data through the database. “For the first time, this year’s database provides an in-depth look at sexual assault data in Victoria, including the overlaps between family violence and sexual assault,” Ms Dowsley said.
“Monitoring and publication of this data is important for increasing understanding so responses to both sexual assault and family violence can continue to be improved.” Along with state-wide statistics, figures were also grouped by Local Government Areas with the City of Casey ranked sixth for recorded sexual assault offences in the last financial year with 488, and Greater Dandenong not far behind at ninth on 431. Cardinia Shire Council was significantly lower at 154 offences, however, when compared to Casey for cases per 100,000 people,
they ranked similarly at 130 compared to Casey’s 132.1. Greater Dandenong was considerably higher on the cases per 100,000 figure at 262.2. Casey was also in the top 10 LGAs for the number of emergency room presentations for sexual violence injuries between July 1 2016 and June 30 2021. There were a number of key findings from the data. There was an increase of 10.8 per cent in the number of sexual offences recorded by police, up from 13,589 in 2019-20 to 15,062 in 2020-21. Continued page 7

Gun runner stung by cops By Cam Lucadou-Wells A Narre Warren South man has been jailed as part of an organised crime ring in drugs, guns and stolen luxury cars. Malaki Salesui, 22, was the last of four offenders sentenced as part of an undercover police sting in Melbourne’s South East in 2019. He pleaded guilty to handling an $180,000 stolen Mercedes Benz, a $26,000 stolen Audi as well as being a prohibited person possessing a fully-automatic SKS assault rifle. Victorian County Court sentencing judge Gerard Mullaly on 2 December noted the “particularly lethal” rifle, capable of firing 100 rounds a minute, was of “great concern”. The stolen cars were also of seriously high value.
However, Salesui played a lesser role in the organised racket, which was busted by several covert police operatives as part of Operation Thrives. A co-accused Jayden Schmidt arranged to sell the stolen Audi with the assault rifle in the car boot to a covert police operative for $18,000. Salesui drove the stolen merchandise to Olive Street Dandenong where the transaction was made. In June 2019, Salesui arranged for the stolen Merc to be towed to a Pakenham address and later towed to Worrell Street, Dandenong to sell to a police operative. At that rendezvous, two of his co-offenders were arrested by Special Operations Group police. Salesui later presented himself to Melbourne West police station.
Salesui’s youth – 19 years at the time – was a central factor for a more “merciful” sentence, the judge noted. “The courts must persevere and endeavour perhaps by carrot and stick to move you towards … your rehabilitation.” Raised in the South East suburbs, Salesui had struggled with alcohol and substance abuse. His intellectual disability, “fragile” mental health and solid church and family relationships were also taken into account. As were his early plea, long delay in sentence and being remanded in adult jail in onerous pandemic conditions. Salesui’s recently-approved NDIS support was “said to be the most sure way to … settle you when you’re back in the community”. Co-offenders Schmidt, of Narre Warren,
Iqan Mehrdadian, of Trugannina, and Andrew Rohan, of Hampton Park, were sentenced in the County Court in May and June. Schmidt and Rohan, who were also sentenced for serious separate offending, were jailed for up to three years and eight months and five years respectively. Judge Mullaly said Salesui’s lesser role was most similar to Mehrdadian, who was jailed for 13 months with a two-year community corrections order. However Salesui warranted a different sentence due to his intellectual disability. He was jailed for 10 months – which had already been served in 317 days of pre-sentence detention. Salesui was facing possibly further jail at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court hearing the next day, Judge Mullaly noted.
Business anger as Hallam’s floodwaters not receding By Cam Lucadou-Wells A row of stranded cars’ number plates hung forlornly in a nearby tree during the Hallam flooding calamity. It’s been a case of rinse and repeat for the past dozen years, Mr Flood says - despite calls for either a levee or the raising of Centre Road. In the meantime, housing and industrial development threatens to create more runoff. Melbourne Water, which manages Hallam Valley floodplain, and City of Casey, which is responsible for Centre Road and its drains, have been in talks. Melbourne Water south east waterways manager John Woodland said the “possibility” of raising the section of Centre Road was being discussed with Casey. “We are currently investigating the design and construction of a new channel in the floodplain which will reduce the amount of time floodwaters remain on the road,” Mr Woodland said. The water authority regularly inspects the floodplain drains, with contractors recently desilting an open channel and “jet-
ting” the drain to “ensure it is functioning correctly. Casey’s city presentation manager David Richardson said the council was advocating to Melbourne Water to improve the floodplain’s drainage system. It also sought Melbourne Water to “investigate new approaches” to protect Centre Road, Mr Richardson said. During the emergency response, Club Hallam owner David Gaul says he witnessed a “comedy of errors” in which a worker poured petrol into a running pump. Unsurprisingly, the machine and its operator managed to catch alight. Mr Gaul’s brothel in the meantime was inaccessible to staff and customers for three days. “This flood was the worst I’ve seen it in 18 years here. The Uber drivers with our girls wouldn’t come in.” “There’s been a lot of back and forth between the council and Melbourne Water but we don’t see any action.” Meanwhile, Mr Flood was encouraged that “at least they’re both talking about it”. “But all they’ve been doing for 13 years is talk about it.”

Can you briefly introduce yourself? I’m Susan Davies, the Secretary of the Westernport Swamp Landcare Group and I live on a 50 acre farmlet in the swamp grasslands leading an idyllic life.
What are you currently reading? The Pakenham Gazette, Call of the Reed Warbler by Charles Massy about regenerative agriculture, and Slater Field Guide to Australian Birds.
Are you from Kooweerup originally? Not a Kooweerup old timer yet. As a kid in the ‘50s and ‘60s, I lived on a farm at Queenscliff, in the ‘70s in Melbourne as an office worker, the Dandenongs in the ‘80s, then the ‘90s in Nar Nar Goon North, and since 2000s in the Bayles/Monomeith area.
If you could invite six guests to a dinner party, who would you invite? Dr Andrew Campbell of Landcare Australia, Rachel Berger comedienne, Charlie Bezzina detective, Greg Hunt Minister for Health, Arron Wood environmentalist, Professor Michael Buxton architect.
And what is your favourite thing about the local community? Amazingly genuine people! And there are lots of great local annual events. The Lang Lang Primary School Arboretum at the top of town is a hidden three acres of magical nature reserve, full of native flora and fauna, where our Landcare group has just held three successful Bug Blitz Days for students, thanks to a Beach Energy grant. May I add, the best treasure is the Yallock Creek! It’s the most wonderful biolink full of birds and remnant swamp vegetation, where one may even spot an endangered bandicoot. Starting at Cora Lynn Outfall with its flood history, one can drive down to Murray Road Bridge with magnificent views to hills, then along lovely Dineen Road to Bandicoot Corner run by CEC, then to the Bayles Bridge and MW easements to reach the Bayles Fauna Park. Continue down to No 5 Drain Road Bridges to see more amazing natural assets. The Yallock then runs

What is your favourite native plant and why? I need an A4 sheet please! I adore all the indigenous species of the great Kooweerup swamp, namely manna & swamp gums, cherry ballarts, swamp tea-trees, the wattles, hop goodenias, kangaroo apples, poas, reeds, sedges and ferns, because they are naturally suited to the growing conditions. How beautiful are the whispering phragmites along the waterways. How gorgeous are the golden wattles flowering along our roadsides and bridges. Prettiest of all is the clematis traipsing over trees in spring with prolific fluffy cream flowers.
How long have you been a part of the Westernport Swamp Landcare Group for and what do you like about being involved in the group? I joined Landcare in 1997. I love the tremendous bunch of vital people caring for neighbours and our local land. What is your favourite food? Roast dinner, vegetables, salads, fruit, blackberry pie with custard and cream. If you could travel anywhere in the world right now, where would you go and why? No, nope, I love where I live!
What is something people don’t know about you? People do not realise my main wish is for the world to treat all animals humanely, and secondly to protect wildlife habitat and ecosystems.

Save with bonus offer The Victorian Government is encouraging households doing it tough with energy bills to apply for the one-off $250 Power Saving Bonus payment, as the 12-month program marks more than 320,000 payments totalling more than $80 million. Bass MP Jordan Crugnale is encouraging all eligible households (who have not already applied for this rebate) to take advantage of the one-off $250 payment before the program ends on 31 January 2022. “There are still many eligible households across the Cardinia and Bass Local Government Areas who have not yet applied for what could be crucial financial relief throughout the second year of Covid-19, including those receiving the Aged Pension,“ Ms Crugnale said. “This one-off $250 payment helps reduce household bill pressure, so if you or anyone you know receives a pension, JobSeeker, Austudy, Abstudy or Youth Allowance, please check eligibility and apply - we are here to help with the application.“ Households can apply for the scheme by calling 1800 000 832 or visiting compare.energy.vic.gov.au. To assist eligible households who may not have access to a computer or require assistance with their application, the government is providing support through the Power Saving Bonus Community Outreach Program. With electricity bills a top cost of living issue and about 20 per cent of Victorian households requesting financial assistance with bills in 2020, the program aims to reduce cost of living pressure with a $250 payment transferred electronically into bank accounts or provided via cheque on request, typically taking about two weeks to arrive. The Power Saving Bonus, part of a $797 million household energy affordability package, is delivered through the government’s Victorian Energy Compare website, which sees more than one million visitors each year. The website helps consumers find the best energy deal available, with data showing seven out of every 10 users save money by switching energy offers and a typical annual saving of $330.

Scout leaders honoured Two women who have dedicated over half a century to Scouts in Cardinia Shire have finally been awarded their Medal of the Order of Australia. Scouting stalwarts Margaret Turner and Lyn Stephenson were invested with the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) earlier this year. Last month, they were able to attend a ceremony held by Her Excellency the Governor of Victoria in the ballroom of Government House to receive their award.
Ms Turner and Ms Stephenson have already given 64 and 53 years service respectively in Scouting to support the youth in Cardinia Shire. This was followed by the Governor hosting the first post Covid afternoon tea outside in the Fountain Courtyard supported by former Cardinia District Commissioner Olive Elston OAM and Bob Taylor AM, also a former DC and former Chief Commissioner of Scouts Victoria. Olive has also been invested with the Silver Kangaroo, for Eminent Achievement and
Meritorious Service on Sunday at Gilwell Park Gembrook by the Chief Commissioner of Victoria for 35 years of service with Scouts. Over her time in Scouting, Olive has held many roles including two separate stints as District Commissioner. Olive agreed to take on the role of District Commissioner in 2016. She has created a culture of learning, enthusiasm, mentoring and most importantly having fun whilst enjoying the program.
In the background, Olive practiced what she preached and mentored many of her leadership team and challenged her team to grow Scouting. Olive has mentored leaders who have now stepped up to take Cardinia to the next stage in their growth. Olive continues to assist the growth of Scouting by taking up short stints in groups, to ensure they benefit from an enthusiastic Leader and a quality program for our youth.

Upcoming works change conditions

Traffic conditions on Narre Warren-Cranbourne Road are set to change. As part of the Narre Warren-Cranbourne Road Upgrade, ground and utility service investigations will continue throughout December so construction will be ready to start in early 2022. The investigations will occur between Thompsons Road and South Gippsland Highway, and on Berwick-Cranbourne Road between Narre Warren-Cranbourne Road and Broad Oak Drive. Short term lane and shoulder closures may occassionally be implemented as well as reduced speeds to keep workers and motorists safe. Drivers have been asked to follow on-road signage and traffic controllers’ instructions, and allow extra time for journeys. The works will occur on weekdays between 7am and 5pm, however, some works will need to be completed overnight to minimise disruption to the community. These works will occur between 8pm and 5am. Narre Warren-Cranbourne Road will become the straight through route when travelling north from South Gippsland Highway, aiming to reduce traffic on Cranbourne’s High Street. Christmas is a time for giving, and one local school has gone the extra mile to ensure vulnerable community members don’t go without this festive season. Hundreds of hampers will go to local families in need this Christmas thanks to generous donations from the Beaconhills College community to its ’Hope for Christmas Appeal’. The College’s Berwick and Pakenham Campus families, including Friends of the Pakenham Campus Junior School and school staff all donated money and boxes full of grocery items and toys to this year’s appeal. Students from the Beacon of Hope student committee including Sarah Davis, Dylan Crossley and Sarah Lockwood (pictured) have been busy sorting and packing the goods for distribution to charity organisations across the local region.

Tackling high-tech abuse By Danielle Kutchel Family violence takes many forms, and a new project aims to identify and disrupt one of its more modern and insidious forms. Homelessness and family violence support service Wayss has partnered with safety assessment provider Protective Group to create the Nicholson Project, which explores new ways of disrupting digital abuse. A report into the pilot has just been released, and the results show just how needed the approach is. Research suggests 99.3 per cent of family violence workers in Australia have clients who had experienced technology-facilitated stalking and abuse. “It’s well-known in the sector that technology, social media and online means are used as a way to perpetrate abuse and exact coercive control over family violence survivor-victims,” explained Robyn Roberts, who oversaw the pilot as general manager of client services at Wayss. “Wayss has increasingly heard from family violence victims referred to our service that they believed they are being tracked, stalked and controlled by their abuser using technology. “Others referred to us were unaware this often-hidden form of abuse was happening to them and their children, leaving them vulnerable to further abuse.” The question was how to protect survivorvictims and their families, as quickly as possible. Early intervention against high-tech abuse is not always part of the immediate response from family violence services. And, the ever-increasing sophistication of technology and the internet is often beyond the capacity of family violence workers. “We needed a way to provide a skilled, targeted early intervention that assessed the digital vulnerability of family violence victims, removing the threat of technology-facilitated abuse and enabling their ongoing safety,” Ms Roberts said. Typically, services like Protective Group will visit survivor-victims to conduct a physical assessment of their safety, including their online devices. The aim of the Nicholson Project was to complete these assessments remotely.
This can reduce the amount of time needed to make vulnerable families as safe as possible. After this remote assessment, if vulnerabilities are identified, Protective Group will conduct an in-person assessment. The report into the project found interpreters and in-language information were important tools. For the assessment, families need to charge all their devices and gather information about all accounts – from social media to financial. The report also found that many survivorvictims don’t believe they are experiencing technology-facilitated abuse – highlighting that all survivor-victims should take the assessment, even if they don’t believe they are at risk. Finally, the report noted that children and
young people can become victims too, or be used as proxy abusers by the perpetrator, so their devices need to be included in the assessment. Ms Roberts said the pilot had positive benefits for survivor-victims. “We found that participants felt more confident that they were not being tracked and abused via technology as well as in their knowledge and ability to manage their use of technology and online platforms,” says Ms Roberts. The pilot comes at a key time, with the south east continuing to record some of the highest rates of family violence in the state. According to the latest crime statistics, the City of Casey recorded an 8.6 per cent increase
in family incidents to the end of June 2021 – the third straight rise. Greater Dandenong recorded a 0.3 per cent increase, and Cardinia 1.8 per cent. Wayss and Protective Group are now focused on building their knowledge in the area and increasing the availability of the project. “The ability to deliver the service remotely in the first instance provides huge potential to scale this up to make this kind of support available to more victims of family violence across Victoria and Australia,” Ms Roberts said. Family violence statistics are a cause for dismay From page 1 Overall, the number of family incidents recorded by Victoria Police increased by 6 per cent from 82,205 in 2019-20 to 93,440 in 2020-21. Larger increases were seen in the number of incidents recorded between former partners, up 8 per cent, and where the victim was the child of the alleged perpetrator, up 14 per cent. Other significant state-wide numbers from the data included: 2021 had highest number of recorded sexual offences in the five-year period with 15062 cases, an increase of 8 per cent from 2020 with 13859. The number of recorded family violence incidents by financial year has increased every year since 2018, peaking at 93,441 in 2020-21. The number of sexual offences against children was up 44.1 per cent from 2272 in 2020 to 3274 in 2021. Between 2017 and 2021, women were three times more likely to be victims of family violence than men, while men were three times more likely to be offenders. There were just under 200 more recorded sexual offences by 25-34-year-olds (1053) in the 2020/2021 financial year than the next highest age group, which was 35-44 year olds with 859. 2021 saw the highest number of recorded sexual offences by men in the five-year period with 4036 recorded offences, up from 3521 in 2020.

Turf Club’s smooth move By Marcus Uhe The Cranbourne Turf Club opened the doors to its new hospitality venue on Wednesday 8 December. Silks Cranbourne will offer a modern Australian menu, local and imported drinks, big screen televisions and entertainment at its upstairs venue at 1475 South Gippsland Highway. The Turf Club invested $450,000 into the upstairs venue which will provide all-day dining from Wednesday to Sunday for between 120-130 people in the bistro. Venue manager Luke King said the addition to the dining and events landscape of Cranbourne came at an exciting time as Melbournians rediscovered their appetite for getting out and about after Covid. “I think there’s a little bit more of an appeal for people to get back to hospitality settings now that vaccination rates are so high, so from that perspective, I think people are going to feel safer, and in general, they want to get out,” King said. “They want to get out, enjoy dining, have a beer with their friends and we’re keen to get them back into the venue.” “We are committed to elevating the dining and entertainment experience in the area and building something special here.” Silks is replacing the old Cranbourne RSL which closed in October, however the Turf Club was able to offer positions to staff who were affected by the closure, which assisted in the handover and addressed the significant staffing issue facing the food and beverage industry. Stage two of the redevelopment on the downstairs dining area next to the bowling green, which will include a new commercial kitchen, is scheduled for completion in late 2022. When stage two is complete, Silks will become a function space with the capacity to

Cranbourne Turf Club Chief Executive Neil Bainbridge is excited for the development to come to fruition. “Our facilities are a work-in-progress but I can confidently say it will be a state-of-theart facility for the whole community to enjoy quality dining and great entertainment all year round,” he said. The venue was originally scheduled for completion in November, however, progress
was hampered by lockdowns. “There has been a bit of a delay in getting the construction workers back in, but also a delay in being able to get product and services because everyone was just flat out as soon as everything opened back up,” King said. “It has been hard, it’s been hard from a staffing point of view, which I think everybody has seen. Rex name shame By Mitchell Clarke Almost one year since alleged corruption was exposed within the City of Casey, a former councillor is still fighting to clear his name. Former Springfield Ward councillor Rex Flannery, who resigned as deputy mayor just days before the State Government sensationally sacked the entire council in February 2020, says the events of the past 12 months are still “eating” him up. He has now officially requested that his name is removed from both a councillor honour board in the customer service centre and a wall plaque in Bunjil Place. “I have never had any involvement into this alleged corruption scandal and therefore I do not wish to have my name associated with past or former councillors who may have brought our City of Casey into disrepute,” he told Star News. “People look at your name and they see that you’re from Casey Council and immediately they put you in that same mould, which couldn’t be further than the truth. “It’s just horrible to have been a councillor in that term. It gives you a sickening feeling in your gut and now I have to live with that.“ Mr Flannery argues his name should never have been placed on the plaque celebrating the $126 million Bunjil development because at the time he didn’t support the project. “I guess I’ve eaten a little bit of humble pie with Bunjil Place. I’ve been able to see the value that place brings to the community but at the time I was against the development and I wasn’t once consulted (about having my name included),” he said. He also claims former ex-ward partner, Sam Aziz, stated to him that he “wished he never had my name added to the plaque”. “That was the only time I agreed with him,” Mr Flannery said. While Mr Flannery hasn’t accused any former councillor of committing wrongdoing, he said anyone found guilty from the IBAC hearing should immediately have their honours stripped. “They need to have their plaques removed

Mum’s gift saved Jake Six-year-old Jake Shiels had only two days left on life support when his mum gave him an incredible life-saving gift. The Cranbourne North boy was battling a mystery virus that had caused his liver to fail and he needed a transplant to have any chance of surviving. Time was running out to find a donor when his mum, Claire DeStratis, discovered she was compatible but donating part of her liver meant risking her own life. “The surgeons said ‘look, one in four you’re going to have a major complication and one in 200 don’t survive the surgery’,” the mum of three said. Burbank sells future Clyde town centre Burbank Group’s National Pacific Properties (NPP) has successfully sold land to be developed into the new Clyde town centre. The site is next to the future Clyde Train Station and adjoins NPP’s Eliston Project and nearby NPP’s projects Hartleigh and Bella. The Clyde sale follows a major deal by NPP to purchase more than 28 hectares of land for 500 homes in the new Melbourne suburb of Pakenham East.
NPP general manager Tom Trevaskis said NPP was focused on ramping up their real estate development business to take advantage of strong demand for land and affordable homes in the area. “This successful deal reflects the strength of sales being experienced in the Clyde, Cranbourne, Berwick region,’’ he said. The work they do is driven by their vision of creating and supporting inclusive communities where people with disability can live, work, play and participate fully in community life. With a strong history and presence of over 50 years, they strive for everyone’s full and equal participation in all aspects of society. This year’s International Day of Persons
with Disabilities theme is Building Back Better: toward a disability-inclusive, accessible and sustainable post Covid-19 World, and that is exactly what they have been doing at Outlook. General manager community services Gabriella Browne, said, “During lockdown, the disability services team re-designed our centre-based and community-based programs and now, more than ever, Outlook has a range of programs and activities to suit all abilities. Of course, we’ve kept the favourite activities Outlook customers have
always enjoyed. “Whether people with disability in our community are looking for further education, employment, social interactions or just plain fun, there’s something for everyone at Outlook. We’ve also introduced enhancements to our supported employment services and we have new sustainable long-term work opportunities for school leavers. Classic Kah claims cup By David Nagel Champion jockey Jamie Kah has returned to the winner’s enclosure for the first time in more than three months after a brilliant victory aboard the Cranbourne-trained Smokin’ Romans in the Listed $300,000 Pakenham Cup (2500m). Kah had a smile from ear-to-ear after giving the five-year-old gelding - trained by now Cranbourne-based trainers Ciaron Maher and David Eustace - a dream run in the cup, run in front of an enthusiastic crowd for the first time since 2019. Smokin’ Romans was never threatened in the straight, holding off the local challenge of the Phillip Stokes-trained Good Idea to win by two lengths on the line, with the Matt Cumanitrained Team Captain two lengths further back in third. Kah was ecstatic after riding her first winner since piloting the Peter Moody-trained Invincible Caviar to victory at Sale on August 22. Kah has recently returned to the track after being suspended for attending an illegal gathering during Victoria’s Covid-19 lockdown. “It’s amazing, I’ve missed it greatly, I love the horses and that’s why I do it, and to come back on a day like today, with the crowds here, and get a win like that it’s very rewarding,” Kah said after the race. “I’m just really happy to be back.” Smokin’ Romans has had an incredible campaign, with his Pakenham Cup win his 14th start in 2021, with nothing more than a five-week freshen up between runs. “They’re amazing horses, and this horse is just the same, it makes you really give credit to Dave (Eustace) and Ciaron (Maher), they have had this horse up for so long and I’ve never seen him look this good,” Kah said. “I knew I had a fit horse underneath me, so if I needed to go if I got challenged, I could, but I wanted to give him the easiest ride I could early.” “He does it all himself this horse, he can feel them coming and he quickens up when they get to him.”

“He’s a funny horse, he’s always had his quirks, but he was really good today and probably the best he’s been. He’s just growing up, he’s just a popular winner and a real favourite at the stable.” Eustace said Smokin’ Romans was thoroughly deserving of victory after a close-up second in the Group-3 Bendigo Cup. “He was a little bit stiff in the Bendigo Cup, we just put the blinkers on today and he got in a lovely spot,” he said. “Jamie did what she does, she rode him as he jumped, and he jumped well, and she just let him stride and got him in a beautiful rhythm and it’s great to have her back…she’s a star of the sport and she showed why today. “She’s just a very naturally gifted rider, it’s a rare thing, she’s got it, the horses run for her and that horse stretched very well for her today. “She took the initiative, it wasn’t necessarily the plan to be so forward, but he jumped well and she went on with it. “It’s good to have her back.”
Trainers Maher and Eustace now call Cranbourne home By David Nagel Of all the recent arrivals to the Cranbourne Training Complex – it’s the site of the allconquering Ciaron Maher and David Eustace team that has made Cranbourne locals sit up and take notice. The Maher/Eustace partnership – racing under the banner of Ciaron Maher Racing – were the dominant figures in Victorian racing last season, training 73 metropolitan winners and a remarkable 228 across the state! And that winning run continued on Saturday with their exciting-prospect Marine One taking out the $130,000 3YO BenchMark-70 Handicap (1000m) at Pakenham on cup day. Marine One has contested some highquality races in his short seven-start career. This time last year he had his first start in the $200,000 Group-3 Maribyrnong Plate (1000m) at Flemington on Derby Day, running a cracking third behind smart performers Finance Tycoon and Ingratiating. In his first four starts – then under the care of Lloyd Kennewell – the valuable Capitalist/Golconda now three-year-old colt ran in group or listed company, before joining the Maher/Eustace stable in the early months of this year. In his new stable Marine One was dropped back in class, breaking the ice with a maiden win at Swan Hill (975m) in late September before going to Moonee Valley and winning a three-year-old handicap over 1000m. The stable then tested him at Group-1 level, running down the track in the $1.5million Coolmore Stud Stakes (1000m) on 30 October, his last run ahead of his Pakenham assignment on Saturday. Eustace, who along with Maher now calls the Cranbourne-training facility home, was excited by the effort. “It was a good performance because he probably raced a little bit like we were worried he might do, a bit fresh early, but he was better once he saw a bit of daylight in the straight when it opened up,” Eustace said.
“Instead of trying to restrain him Josh (Richards) did exactly the right thing and let him go. “He (Richards) said pre-race that he thought the rail was absolutely fine, he didn’t know why they weren’t going down it, so once he was able to get clear air and was able to let him slide, he was quite impressive.” Eustace was surprised to see Marine One veer to the fence in the straight, needing to be
redirected several times by Richards. Eustace said his exciting colt still has a lot to learn. “I’d say it’s going to be a bit of racing that will sort him out, but he hasn’t really shown that to us in the past, the lugging in, but we’ll just work out where to go from here,” he said. “It’s just good to get another winner in these colours, so hopefully he can progress from here.” Jockey Richards said getting the colt to settle was his main priority. “Dave (Eustace) just said to come out neutral on him and I had to spend a bit of time to get him to relax,” Richards said. “He jumped, I had a perfect sit on him, he travelled up really, really strongly, and once the run came at the top of the straight, he was only idling…he did it quite easy.” Thursday, 9 December, 2021

Seagulls flying high By David Nagel Tooradin (2/148) has continued its super-impressive start to the WGCA Premier Division season with a comprehensive victory over Merinda Park (144) at Barton Reserve on Saturday. The Cobras were on the back foot from the start, with skipper Paul Stockdale unavailable due to a nasty shoulder injury that will keep him off the park for some time. Merinda Park’s stand-in skipper Dustin Peebles had his first success at the toss, and elected to bat first – with openers Cambell Bryan (28) and star performer Daniel McCalman (18) looking to continue their bright start to the season. Bryan and McCalman summed up the Cobras innings, with both making solid starts but not going on with the business. The Cobras had seven players make it to double figures, but only Sasindu Perera (23) and Tyson Bertrand (18) could combine for a partnership of any significance through the middle order. Apart from that 33-run partnership – and that from the openers – the Seagulls had no trouble in finding a consistent formula to break through. The key ingredient of the formula was Bailey Lownds (3/34), who slightly shaded Dylan Sutton (3/36) for bowling honours, while Jack Mannix (2/19) made two important breakthroughs through the middle stages of the Cobras innings. The Gulls then lost Tom Hussey (11) early, but skipper Cal O’Hare (77 not out) played a masterful knock, crunching 11 fours in an 88ball stay at the crease that reeked of maturity and class. The Seagulls skipper was ably supported by the ever-improving Ben Parrott (20), while Josh Lownds (33 not out) also continued his positive start to the season as the Seagulls cruised to victory with 12 overs left in the innings. Kooweerup (5/123) is ready to take on the challenge of bringing down reigning premier Cardinia this weekend after the Demons put paid to a heavily-undermanned Pakenham (8/122) at Denhams Road on Saturday. Either through injury or unavailability the Lions were without four of their key pillars, with skipper Dale Tormey, in-form batter Chris Smith, and all-rounders Troy McDermott and Jason Williams all missing from the side that pushed Tooradin to the limit at Westernport Oval last week.

Business as usual for Southside Flyers By Tyler Lewis The Southside Flyers lifted-off in the season opener on Saturday night, crushing the Bendigo Spirit. The Spirit – a side that was unable to win a game last summer – showed good intent, pushing the Flyers at times in the home sides’ 94-81 victory. It was a second period onslaught that defined that match, with the Flyers outscoring the Spirit 25-11 in the second. Flyers superstars Rebecca Cole (24 points, four assists) and Sara Blicavs (27 points, 11 rebounds) were once again prominent figures on the court, especially in the second period, where Blicavs scored majority of her points, both inside the paint and from deep. Abby Bishop (20 points, four assists and 11 rebounds) was also impressive with a doubledouble. In her first match against her old side, Leilani Mitchell collected five points and seven rebounds in her new Spirit threads. Mitchell is among several players based in the south east to be named in the Opals FIBA Women’s sqaud for the 2022 World Cup. Dogs feast on low flyin’ Swannies By Nick Creely Casey-South Melbourne was dismantled at Mervyn Hughes Oval on Saturday, with the Swans thumped to the tune of 10 wickets by a fired-up Footscray. The bitterly disappointing Swans would want to quickly erase this one from their memory in the tough outing in the West. Batting first, Michael Wallace’s group struggled from the outset, losing three early wickets before desperately scrambling to salvage something of the innings in the wake of some unbelievably disciplined bowling by the well-drilled Doggies. One bright spark was talented teenager Harrish Kannan, who scored 59 from 89 balls to help the Swans to 193 from 49.3 overs, with Chris Bendek (27) and Luke Shelton (31) also contributing strongly late to at least give the bowlers something to work with. Kannan – who scored 77 in the opening round – has been a revelation through the middle order for the Swans so far this season, and one to keep an eye on. But there was very little to smile about from there on in with Doggies openers Dylan Brasher and Daniel Sartori absolutely putting the Swans to the sword. In 37 overs of dominant white-ball batting, the duo raced down the total without the loss of wicket, with Brasher crunching 101 not out and Sartori 88 not out, with the left-handed Brasher playing some outrageous shots off the quicks. The talented youngster was particularly brutal off some short bowling, with a flick shot off quickie Nathan Lambden for six needed to be seen to be believed. The Dogs made it a perfect weekend against the Swans, winning comfortably in the seconds, thirds and fourths. Will Carr’s side will need to bounce back quickly when they travel to Shepley Oval on Saturday to face their great rivals, Dandenong, in a blockbuster clash for the sides who both boast 1-2 records. Boggie at his best CRANBOURNE BOWLS Cranbourne took on ladder leaders Monbulk on Saturday and won by four shots in a thrilling game played up in the hills on a fast bowling surface. The second side also played a thriller, at home, but went down by just three shots in another close but disappointing loss. Team selectors had a horrendous week with over 18 players injured or unavailable which made their task extremely difficult. (Perhaps a result of players in lock down at home for so long without enough exercise, having some impact.) In mid-week bowls Cranbourne took total points against Keysborough in a well-earned win at home. Side 1 Division 2 Sec 5 Skip Lyn Quigg and his team of Noel Hardy, Ian Barrenger and Garry Hunt enjoyed the fast surface and won by 11 shots which helped set up the win against a team that had not lost a game this year. Skip Doug Boggie was in great form with some amazing saves during the day for his team before finally going down by just one shot, while skip Peter Elgar fought out a tie thanks to a great contribution from Nick Arnold who has been in great nick this year. All bases fully loaded at Casey Softball It was a great day for round two of softball at Casey with a little breeze around but the rain staying away to provide ideal conditions for players. The day kicked off with the Under-16 Mixed Fully Loaded competition….where bases are loaded to start the game! This week it was Cobras Under-16D v Cobras Maroon, in an exciting game where loads of runs were scored with Cobras Maroon eventual winning 18-12. It was the first round of our Under-13 competition for the season, and we were very excited to see our new junior team - Cranbourne Youngstars - take on the Dodgers. All of the young players had a great time and learnt a lot from their wonderful coaches. Youngstars had their maiden win beating Dodgers 3-0. In the other Under-13 game Berwick Cherokee played Cobras…again, lots of fun, with many players new to softball. Cobras were comfortable winners 13-2. Next were the Social Women with Berwick Geronimo’s taking on Doveton Renegades on Diamond-3. Geronimo jumped out of the box with seven runs in each of the first and second innings, while Renegades could only manage three. Geronimo held on for a strong 16-4 win. Best for Geronimo was Ali Smith with two cranbournenews.starcommunity.com.au
There was softball action aplenty at Casey over Picture: ROB CAREW the weekend. 233828 triples, and for Renegades Megan Angel. Berwick Chickasaw then played Narre Warren Penguins. Chickasaw have picked up a couple of good new players in the off season as well as a couple of returning players, which saw them jump to an early lead 11-4 after three innings. Unfortunately, the Penguins were a little undermanned and couldn’t get their bats going, with Chickasaw running out 16-5 winners. Best for Chickasaw was Sarah Villers, and Penguins Jess George.

Finishing off the round of Social Womens games was Cobras taking on the MVPs. Both teams started well, but the strong bats of MVP saw them pull away in the later innings. MVPs won 21-10. Best on ground for MVPs was Ashley Patterson. Women’s Open Fully Loaded continued for their second round, with the ladies getting more use to the new format. Two Berwick teams Cheyenne and Comanche faced off in a very fast paced game. Comanche had a triple play in the first innings with Emma Arnett catching a fly ball at deep shortstop; she flew the ball to second for the double play, who threw the ball on to first to complete the triple play! Cheyenne struggled to recover and Comanche won 25-12. In the second game Casey took on the Doveton Destroyers. In a much more even game, both teams scored consistently throughout the game. Casey held on to finish strong and was 21-15 winners. Finally our Open Men finished off the day’s games with Cobras taking on the Cranbourne Meteors. Cranbourne jumped out of the blocks with an 11-2 first innings. Cobras rallied a little in the third with six runs, but the damage had been done. Meteors were comfortable 25-9 winners.
There was a local flavour to the recent Victorian Second XI match, with Dandenong District Cricket Association champion Ruwantha Kellepotha and rising youngster Ashley Chandrasinghe making their debuts on the MCG. Kellepotha – who clinched the DDCA’s highest individual honour, the Alan Wookey Medal last season with Berwick but has had incredible stints with Springvale South, Keysborough and St Mary’s – broke through to higher honours after just one game at Premier Cricket level with the Swans. He is one of the association’s finest players of the last decade. The 30-year-old played 20 First Class matches in Sri Lanka, averaging 38.56 with the bat and 29.41 with the ball, before moving to Australia where he settled in as one of the biggest stars of the south-east suburbs. In the four-day game against ACT/ NSW Country, the pair – both playing their Premier Cricket at Casey-South Melbourne – were extremely impressive as they pushed for potential state selection this season and beyond. Kellepotha’s experience proved vital with the bat in the first innings, scoring a handy 26 not out, including two sixes. But it was his leggies that impressed most, sending down 26 overs for the return of 2/71, bouncing back brilliantly from a shaky start. However, it was 19-year-old Ashley Chandrasinghe – a Buckley Ridges junior – that shone on the wide expanses of the ‘G. The talented young left-handed opening batter top-scored in both innings for the Victorian side, scoring a patient 56 off 151 balls in the first dig, hitting five boundaries before he was eventually bowled. In the second innings, with the wickets tumbling, Chandrasinghe stood tall and helped salvage the Victorians into a winning position, scoring a gutsy 68 from 178 balls, with his side just mustering up 162. He spent a total of almost eight hours at the crease, showcasing his impenetrable technique and patience. Victoria and ACT/NSW Country eventually drew the game with rain intervening late in the fourth day, with Fergus O’Neill (3/43), skipper Xavier Crone (51) and opener Jack Rudd (50) other Victorians to impress across the four day match.
