Gifts offer hope By Danielle Kutchel The Australian community has opened its heart to the beloved Sikh Volunteers Australia, donating funds in record time to help the organisation build its new facility. Money poured in from across the country $628,000 in fact, in just five days. Jaswinder Singh, secretary of Sikh Volunteers Australia, said “each and every single penny” would go towards fulfilling the organisation’s dream of a new, purpose-built site in Cranbourne West. Construction is expected to start later this
year or early next year. The facility will allow the volunteers to increase their food production approximately nine-fold – from around 1500 meals a day to 10,000. Mr Singh said all 300 of the organisation’s volunteers - who currently work out of a location in Devon Meadows - were looking forward to it. “With this new facility in place, we can have more hands on deck and everyone can contribute,” he said. He thanked the community for donating to the cause and said it proved Australians were
willing to extend a helping hand to those in need. “It’s really heartwarming and touching that the whole multicultural society is coming together and trying to help people in need,” he said. “This is the spirit Australia needs and the way we can go forward.” Sikh Volunteers Australia is currently running home deliveries of freshly cooked vegetarian meals to those in need in the south east of Melbourne. Faster broadband service on the way By Danielle Kutchel Businesses in Cranbourne South will be among those hitting the web at high speed, with a new deal set to improve internet connections. The State Government has struck a deal with the NBN Co that will see broadband upgrades delivered in 120 locations across Victoria over the next two years through the $550 million Connecting Victoria program. The State is kicking in $73 million as part of the agreement. The first round of upgrades will see more than 1000 Victorian businesses in 12 locations get access to faster and more reliable fibre internet. The NBN will build infrastructure for improved fibre connections free of charge, with businesses only paying to connect to the service. The State Government is subsidising the infrastructure to minimise costs for businesses, leaving them to only pay for their internet plan. As well as Cranbourne South, the first areas to benefit from the roll out will be Pakenham North, Pakenham South, Dromana, Lara, Colac, Hamilton, Portland, Wonthaggi, Inverloch, Warragul and Benalla. Businesses in these areas will be able to contact NBN to order the new connections from September 1, with work expected to be completed within 90 days of each order.
Renewed appeal over home invasion Detectives from Casey Crime Investigation Unit detectives are renewing their appeal for witnesses to an assault during an aggravated home invasion in Cranbourne North in February. Investigators were told three male offenders attended a Lindenow Court address and ransacked a bedroom about 7.15pm on Monday 1 February. A neighbour heard an occupant scream and jumped the back fence to assist when he was confronted by the offenders. The man was struck to the head with an unknown weapon by one of the offenders before the group fled on foot. The 41-year-old victim was transported to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries while the occupants of the address were not injured. Detectives have released CCTV footage of an offender running from the scene followed by a silver utility leaving the location, as well as FACE images of two people that may be able to assist with their investigation. Police are investigating whether the burglary was targeted, and it remains ongoing. Lisa’s brimming with smiles and coffee By Danielle Kutchel During lockdown it’s nice to be able to enjoy the little things – and it’s the little things that Lisa, owner and barista at Brewed Up Kombi, is so good at. While lockdown means that Lisa is unable to take her bright orange van to markets and sporting events, she has continued to park up at Pearcedale Community Centre during the week to deliver those delicious shots of caffeine goodness. She said she’s been fairly busy too, with residents and passers-by stopping in for a socially-distanced, Covid-safe takeaway drink. “I think people like the fact that they can get out and have a quick chat while I make a coffee, and have something they like,” Lisa said. She loves putting smiles on her customers’ faces and said hearing their compliments and the way her drinks lift their spirits makes her day too. Lisa set up Brewed Up Kombi in November 2020, after Covid drove her to follow her dreams. “I’ve always loved making coffees,” she said. “As scary as it was [to set up], I love it – it’s the best thing I’ve ever done, I’m really happy.” She stays positive during her visits to Pearcedale, and said she’s glad she can keep pumping out her customers’ favourite brews.
Police are investigating after a man was assaulted in his car in Clyde North. The incident occurred on Thursday 26 August after a verbal altercation took place between two drivers at the intersection of Berwick Cranbourne Road and Hamersley Drive just before 8am. Investigators have been told the offender exited his vehicle and punched the victim to the face while he was seated in his silver Holden Captiva. The 45-year-old Berwick man sustained facial injuries as a result of the assault. The offending man is perceived to be of Pacific Islander appearance, with a solid build, about 30-years-old and was wearing a hi-vis yellow top. He was driving a dark coloured SUV which was last seen driving south along the Berwick Cranbourne Road. Anyone who witnessed the incident is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential crime report at crimestoppersvic.com.au
New Cranbourne exposure site The Cranbourne Turf Club vaccination centre has been named an exposure site. The centre has been named a tier two site only for clients attending the centre. A positive case visited the venue on Saturday 21 August from 1.30-2.30pm. Anyone who attended at this time should get tested urgently and isolate until they receive a negative result. Dr’s orders - get vaxxed By Danielle Kutchel A Cranbourne medical clinic is warning people to take the threat of Covid seriously and get vaccinated. Our Medical Home in Cranbourne is offering both AstraZeneca and Pfizer to its patients, with 300 Pfizer vaccines available each week for patients to book. “There’s more demand for Pfizer,” explained lead doctor Mark Overton. However the clinic is still currently busy with AstraZeneca doses, with plenty of shots of this vaccine available for both walk-ins and bookings.
Dr Overton said the clinic had been “flat out” since the latest outbreak began in Sydney and in Melbourne, when interest increased in getting vaccinated. “Vaccination gives protection against dying, and if you haven’t been vaccinated it’s like Russian Roulette as to whether you live or die when you come into contact with Covid,” Dr Overton said. “And it’s not just dying of Covid – there’s also long Covid, the brain fog, fatigue, aches and long-term effects on your heart, liver and lungs.” Dr Overton said it was disappointing to see people not taking Covid-19 seriously or
spreading conspiracy theories about the virus. “If you had a problem with the plumbing system, you’d call a plumber. If you’ve got a medical problem in a pandemic, surely you’d listen to the experts – the epidemiologists, the virologists and the medical people, rather than a Facebook post,” he said. He recommended people stay on top of the latest health advice from the government to get the most accurate information about Covid. Hunt continues for Eric the dalmation By Danielle Kutchel

A Cranbourne East family is desperately searching for their lost dog which went missing more than two weeks ago. Eric the dalmatian was last seen at the family’s home on the afternoon of Sunday 8 August. The family believes he was spooked by loud noises and managed to open the door to escape. Owner Amanda Brown described him as a “gentle giant” and said the whole family is distraught. Adding to their heartache is the close bond Eric shares with Amanda’s daughter, Emma, who has autism and tourettes. Eric is an untrained support dog for Emma and helps calm her tics and anxiety. Since he went missing, Amanda said Emma has struggled to eat and sleep and has disengaged from school. “My daughter is beside herself, I’ve never
seen her this upset,” Amanda said. She has set up a Facebook group, Help Find Eric the Dalmatian, to galvanise public support in the search and to keep track of sightings. There was an unconfirmed sighting of Eric around Ramlegh Park Primary School on the day he went missing, however he hasn’t been spotted since. Amanda has turned to a pet psychic to try and find some leads on Eric, and was told he is not far away – around five to seven kilometres east to north east of the family home in Cranbourne East. The psychic also said Eric had been sheltering on a farm with cows and horses and is scared of the noise the animals make. He is said to be near farm machinery that is not used daily, and is scared to approach people. According to the psychic, Eric is in a rural area without many people or roads and doesn’t know how to get home.
Amanda said she is feeling confident now that they have an area to focus the search on, and is sure that Eric is still alive. “I think he’s just lost and can’t find a way home,” she said. She’s been blown away by the community’s reaction to her pleas for help, with hundreds of people joining the Facebook group and pledging to look for Eric. “It’s hard to describe how good it feels. It’s really heart-warming to think people love him as much as we do,” she said. Eric does not bark so he won’t try to attract attention, but he does respond to his name when called. The 11-year-old dalmatian has a distinctive diagonal line of spots that lead from the top of his head to the corner of his eye. His spots are brown. Anyone around Cranbourne East, Clyde, Clyde North and Officer South is urged to keep an eye out for Eric and to contact Amanda on 0400 500 545 if they find him.
Clyde Road, rail, top of mind for concerned residents Casey residents want to see action taken on a Clyde rail link and a better Clyde Road. That’s according to a recent Casey-wide survey, which showed almost all respondents support the Clyde rail link with most people in the community also calling for a better Clyde Road corridor. Approximately 600 residents responded to the Connecting Casey survey to have their say about which key projects they would like to see funded and why. City of Casey chair of administrators Noelene Duff thanked residents for sharing their views, which will help the council develop its Connecting Casey advocacy campaign. “There are three key areas our community wants to see more investment in. Roads and public transport is the number one area of concern, followed by local job opportunities and health services and facilities,“ she said.
“More than 97 per cent of residents want to see the Cranbourne to Clyde rail extension and the majority (96 per cent) support railway lines and stations above the road to ease congestion. “This much-needed rail project will serve the fast-growing areas of Clyde and Clyde North, which has tripled in population size over the past five years.” The Clyde Road corridor, which links the Clyde, Clyde North, Cranbourne and Berwick communities via Cranbourne-Berwick Road and Clyde Road was ranked as the most urgent arterial road project to be fixed. “More than 84 per cent of residents consider Clyde Road corridor as the most important project to advocate on. Parts of this corridor are single-lane carriage ways, which lead to growing congestion and frustration for residents every day,“ Ms Duff said. “Arterial roads such as Cranbourne-Berwick
Road and Clyde Road are managed by the State Government. Council has identified the improvements to help residents travel more safely and effectively, including duplicating sections and improved traffic management technology. “Council is requesting both State and Federal Governments to deliver the upgrades needed for the vital Clyde Road corridor. “When schools and workplaces re-open, our community will again face growing delays on this corridor.” Ms Duff said the Connecting Casey campaign will continue to engage with the community in its advocacy efforts. “City of Casey’s Council Plan 2021-25 outlines Council’s direction to advocate to State and Federal Governments for ‘key service and infrastructure delivery,’ and via our Connecting Casey work, residents can keep track of the projects and share their support.”

Man charged after pursuit

A 39-year-old Cranbourne man has been charged following an alleged pursuit in Melbourne’s south. It’s alleged a stolen Audi reversed into a police vehicle and drove off towards Cranbourne on the morning of Sunday 29 August. Police arrested the man on Peninsula Link after successfully deploying stop sticks. The man has been charged with offences including theft of motor vehicle, damage to emergency service vehicle, dangerous driving, reckless conduct endangering life. He remains in hospital under police guard and was expected to face court on Tuesday 31 August.

The library may be closed, but that doesn’t mean Children’s Book Week was cancelled. Casey Cardinia Libraries got into the spirit with a number of fun online activities for readers. Sarah Litchfield, team leader at Doveton Library, was among those getting into the spirit of the occasion by dressing up as Cruella de Vil. Passionate about children’s literature, Ms Litchfield said parents should begin reading to their children as early as possible to help with their language and literacy development. “It’s a beautiful way of bonding with a child as well,” she said. She said reading doesn’t necessarily need to be books – parents can pick out food labels on trips to the supermarket for example, to inspire kids to think about the words and
what they mean. “Just reading and talking is the most important thing you can do,” she said. Chris Buckingham, chief executive officer of Casey Cardinia Libraries, said books could transport readers to different places. “Books are our passport to other worlds. It is so important during these disrupted times that children are able to exercise their imaginations through reading,” he said. “Children’s Book Week is an opportunity to celebrate reading with the young people our lives and help them navigate their way to happy spaces and places.”

Helen Lambert joined the Hampton Park Bowls Club in 2007. She came to bowls after a stellar career in women’s football. Helen will be remembered for her sense of humour and her refusal to quit on any challenge. At Hampton Park BC, she quickly became
proficient at bowls, finishing with three women’s singles’ championships (2011/12, 2015/16 and 2018/19). Lady president, bar manager, selector and board member were some of the positions held by Helen during her time at the club. She was fiercely competitive when it came to bowls, both against women and men, wanting to be the best. Even when she was in poor health, the will to compete was always there. Helen’s pioneering work had laid the foundation for growing the game of football for women and girls.
As a founding committee member of the VWFL, 40 years ago in 1981, Helen was a driver in those first years to what we see in the game now, where the AFLW has added a vibrancy and excitement to the game. With a key role in the formation of the Victorian Women’s Football League in 1981 (the earliest ongoing league for women in Australia), Helen was the inaugural captain of the Broadmeadows Scorpions, leading them to a premiership in the first season of the competition. In 1983 she became president of the VWFL, was subsequently awarded life membership,
and continued to serve as president until 1986. Helen’s legacy will live on in football with the best and fairest medal in the VWFL named in her honour, with the first Helen Lambert Medal backdated to 1983. With the formation of a national women’s competition in 2017, Helen’s pioneering contribution to the code continues to be recognised by the Lambert-Pearce Medal, awarded to the best and fairest player in the premier division of the VFL Women’s competition. Condolences to the Lambert family and we thank them for her contribution to football.

Friendly jab advice By Danielle Kutchel Tooradin Pharmacy has leapt into action as part of the Covid-19 vaccine rollout. Pharmacist Brendan Green said since starting the Covid vaccination clinic in mid-August, patient levels had picked up well with many days booked out. The pharmacy is currently vaccinating around 10 to 15 people a day. “We’ve been able to double the vaccination capacity in the town,” Mr Green said. He explained pharmacies were ideally placed to provide the Covid-19 vaccine because pharmacists are often one of a person’s primary and regular care providers, and are therefore a welcoming and familiar face. Pharmacists also understand their patients’ medical history and are qualified to provide expert advice on the vaccine. “The community trusts us; we can answer their questions in a safe and private environment.” He said while there had been some vaccine hesitancy – which he said was different to being anti-vaccination – patient numbers were definitely on the increase. “I think there’s been a bit of vaccine hesitancy due to the mixed messaging that’s been around, but I think the messaging has streamlined in the last couple of weeks to say the most important thing we can do is get a vaccine, in a timely manner. “If people are concerned about getting the vaccine, we’re happy to talk to them. Building up A Clyde North primary school is getting extra space for students to study with State Government funding for two state-of-the-art, double-storey relocatable classroom to meet growing student enrolment. Bass MP Jordan Crugnale announced on Monday 30 August that Ramlegh Park Primary School would receive the new modern classrooms to offer flexibility to manage enrolment growth in time for the 2022 school year. Ramlegh Park Primary School is among 17 schools across Victoria to share in 25 of these buildings for 2022. The relocatable buildings come complete with double-glazed windows, improved thermal insulation to reduce heat loss, acoustic insulation to reduce internal noise reverberation, and are built to an energy-efficient design. “We are delivering a modern, twostorey relocatable building for Ramlegh Park Primary School because we know that quality infrastructure gives our students and teachers the learning environments they need to achieve their best,” Ms Crugnale said. “Going two-storey means they still have plenty of open play spaces at this wonderful local school.” Ramlegh Park Primary School principal Linda Corcoran welcomed the government’s announcement. “We are excited to be part of the growing community of Clyde North and thrilled to have modern two-storey classrooms that will allow for this growth while keeping our spacious playground.” The State Government allocated $114 million through the Victorian Budget 2021/22 to the Relocatable Buildings Program.

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A Dandenong migration agent is offering free advice to evacuate immediate family members stricken in an increasingly desperate Afghanistan. Thay-Horn Yim said he was able to provide Afghan-Australians citizens and permanent residents with official information to help their family as well as interpreters and staff who assisted Australian and Western-allied forces. “There are specific instructions they have to follow and these instructions could change rapidly.” This includes the documents they need to take to Kabul International Airport, whether to lodge new or previously lodged applications and what to do if they receive or miss a call from Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs. Mr Yim also had information on what phone number evacuees must ring, how close to the airport before they ring and which airport gate to enter. He has offered a volunteer service through Refugee Legal in Collingwood for more than 15 years, but the dire situation in Afghanistan compelled him to do more. “I want to do extra now for this urgent need in the City of Greater Dandenong.” The Taliban had swept to power during the staged withdrawal of the US, Australia and allies. In the past week, thousands, including Australian citizens, have flocked to Kabul’s international airport after the withdrawal of US, Australian and allied forces led to the Taliban sweeping back into power.

Katelyn is talking to help heal trauma By Shelby Brooks A Clyde North woman has taken the plunge and started her own podcast, sharing stories of trauma as a way of healing. Katelyn Dawson-Brunsch has been through a lot in her 21 years and believes the best way to heal is to talk. “My mythology is when you start to talk about it, you start to heal from what you’ve been through,” she said. “I always thought I was meant to do a lot more with my life, I know that sounds cheesy but I’ve been through a lot of trauma and horrible things. “I thought about writing a book, but podcasts are the new thing, everyone listens to them these days.” Her podcast, called Our Journey, will share her own story of trauma, as well as other people who want to share their journeys. “I want the podcast to be a safe space for other people to share their stories with no judgement,” Katelyn said. The tag line is ‘our journey starts here’, reflecting that this will not just be her story, but for anyone who wants to share their experiences. She released her first episode on Saturday 28 August- a little introduction to the idea behind the podcast. “I got so many messages from people saying they were proud of me and excited and glad I’m doing it so have to keep going now,” Katelyn said. Available on Spotify, the podcast will cover a range of topics such as domestic violence, suicide, cancer, bullying, rape, and PTSD, with guest speakers on each topic. Katelyn did a call out on social media to see if any other survivors wanted to share their stories on her show. “Two hours after posting about it, I had 50 messages from people wanting to talk. By the next morning, I had 150- it went crazy,” she said. “I’ve got about 200 episodes written down, so I can’t give up on it.” Katelyn has also started an Instagram page for the podcast, called ourjourney_podcast_byk cranbournenews.starcommunity.com.au

South-East families have had their fears for loved ones in Afghanistan further rocked by terror bomb blasts outside Kabul International Airport. The Australian evacuation mission ended hours before the bombings killed nearly 200 people at the airport’s gate on 27 August including 13 US troops and locals desperately trying to flee the Taliban-run country. Barat Batoor, from the 16,000-strong Hazara diaspora in the South East, was shattered by the violence. But he expected it since the US negotiated to withdraw from Afghanistan, paving the way for a Taliban takeover. Islamic State had taken responsibility for the attacks. They and the Taliban were enemies but “two sides of the same coin”. “It’s the same ruthless Taliban, the same ruthless ideology who believe in violence, torture and killing, which are not in line with 21st-century values. “I believe if they do change, their ideology will collapse.” Mr Batoor, a photo-journalist who fled for his life from Afghanistan in 2012, works as an organiser for Asylum Seeker Resource Centre. The Taliban’s true colours were already emerging ahead of the 31 August deadline for the US withdrawal, he says. He’d seen footage and reports of the Taliban beating and preventing Hazaras from reaching the airport due to their ethnicity. Others in fear of retribution for working for foreign powers and the UN have been stopped at Taliban check-points and “disappeared”. Despite warnings of terror attacks, many were desperately braving the trip to the airport or fleeing to the Pakistan border. “It is like welcoming death if they go to the airport. “People are not knowing what to do. Things will get worse and people will suffer. It’s an uncertain situation.” Mr Batoor reiterated the call for the Government to boost its humanitarian visa offer from 3,000 to 20,000 places. He also called for permanent protection and family reunion visas to Hazara asylum seekers in Australia, who have had the threat of deportation hanging over their heads for up to a decade. On 27 August, Prime Minister Scott Morrison announced 4100 had been evacuated as part of the Australian mission from “one of the most dangerous places on Earth”. They included more than 3200 Australians and Afghan visa holders for Australia, he said. Foreign states had airlifted a total of 70,000 at that point. “Australia’s operations now for the evacuation have been completed. “We were able to ensure the departure of the remaining Australian personnel over the course of last night, not that long before the terrible events that unfolded last night took place.” Mr Morrison condemned the “evil”, “calculated” and “inhuman” attacks on the “innocent” and “brave” at Kabul airport. The US troops had fallen in a “very worthy cause”. “These brave young Americans stood at that gate to protect life, to save life but lost their own in providing a pathway to freedom for others.” Foreign Minister Marise Payne said it was a “very distressing situation for Australians still in Kabul, for people with visas, and for family and friends who are here in Australia”. “Our new travel advice says Australian evacuation flights from Kabul have ceased.”

Six ways to sustainability Many years ago I did some work with an established business that understood the value of strategic planning and set specific goals every year. The year I joined them 15 business goals had been set of which 11 were financial. Because the company did a good job of rolling these goals out annually, the staff were very well aware of what the key focus areas were for that year and with more than two-thirds in the financial space, everyone knew that the intention was to make money and save money wherever possible. However, one evening two key staff members rang in sick and so the team leader for that section saw this as an opportunity to save staff costs by not bringing in temporary staff to cover their absence. Unfortunately however, the workload that evening turned out to be higher than expected with the result that quality was well below the normal high standard, the existing staff were put under significant pressure, things were delivered late and customer satisfaction dropped with some regulars not coming back. This is what can happen when a company puts too high degree of focus on one particular aspect of its operation and so to counter this, I derived ‘the Six Foundations for Sustainable Business’. This framework represents six fundamental areas of a business and can be used in a variety

However, the most common reason I apply it is to check whether each of these areas has been properly considered when defining strategic or business goals for an organisation. It is not required that there is the same number of goals for each of the six areas simply that each area be properly considered and appropriate goals be defined. Here’s another way to think about this. Suppose you are a car enthusiast and want to make your standard saloon car go much faster. It might be tempting to think that buying a V8 engine and dropping this in would do the trick (assuming it would fit), but if you could do this, unless you upgrade the brakes, the suspension, wheels and tyres etc, you may not get quite the ride you expect! Fundamentally, this comes down to achieving balance within a business and in fact you

Op shop to close doors By Danielle Kutchel The Backpacks 4 Vic Kids charity op shop on Camms Road, Cranbourne, is closing down after 18 months of trading. The store made the announcement via Facebook in early August. The op shop opened in early 2020 to support the work of children’s charity Backpacks
4 Vic Kids, which provides bags of essential items to kids entering care. The shop is currently clearing all its stock, with 50 per cent off storewide. Rex name shame By Mitchell Clarke Almost one year since alleged corruption was exposed within the City of Casey, a former councillor is still fighting to clear his name. Former Springfield Ward councillor Rex Flannery, who resigned as deputy mayor just days before the State Government sensationally sacked the entire council in February 2020, says the events of the past 12 months are still “eating” him up. He has now officially requested that his name is removed from both a councillor honour board in the customer service centre and a wall plaque in Bunjil Place. “I have never had any involvement into this alleged corruption scandal and therefore I do not wish to have my name associated with past or former councillors who may have brought our City of Casey into disrepute,” he told Star News. “People look at your name and they see that you’re from Casey Council and immediately they put you in that same mould, which couldn’t be further than the truth. “It’s just horrible to have been a councillor in that term. It gives you a sickening feeling in your gut and now I have to live with that.“ Mr Flannery argues his name should never have been placed on the plaque celebrating the $126 million Bunjil development because at the time he didn’t support the project. “I guess I’ve eaten a little bit of humble pie with Bunjil Place. I’ve been able to see the value that place brings to the community but at the time I was against the development and I wasn’t once consulted (about having my name included),” he said. He also claims former ex-ward partner, Sam Aziz, stated to him that he “wished he never had my name added to the plaque”. “That was the only time I agreed with him,” Mr Flannery said. While Mr Flannery hasn’t accused any former councillor of committing wrongdoing, he said anyone found guilty from the IBAC hearing should immediately have their honours stripped. “They need to have their plaques removed

Jill speaks to the declining tone of civility in real life and the on-line world. It’s an excellent analysis of the impact that this has on debate, our mental health and ultimately the formation of public policy. It’s an excellent read. Next on the list is a Paul Keating biography by Kerry O’Brien. I suspect that my taste in non-fiction is terribly predictable. Kindle/e-book or hard copy? - thoughts of the author and the thoughts of your own. It opens concepts, views and opinions that you might not have otherwise considered. For me, a descriptive phrase can sometimes mean I will view that concept, feeling or object in those words from then on. Reading has the power to convey this.

Booth’s Paralympic dream By David Nagel Emma Booth is certainly no stranger to overcoming adversity and the former Berwick local has continued that admirable quality at her second Paralympic Games in Tokyo. Booth - competing in Para-Equestrian Dressage - finished in eighth place in the Grade III Individual Test with a score of 70.059, overcoming an early error to earn qualification for the eight-strong Individual Freestyle Test. Booth and her steed, Zidane, became the first athlete-equine pairing to represent Australia at two Paralympics after they first took on the biggest stage in world sport in Rio in 2016. In Rio, Booth and Zidane finished fifth in the Individual Grade II Test and she was a member of the Australian team that finished ninth in the Team Competition. The 30-year-old, who now lives in Langwarrin, became a paraplegic and suffered multiple injuries after a car accident in April 2013, where a truck jack-knifed and hit her car head
on as her and a friend returned from a horse event in Albury. A severe knock to the head caused a brain bleed, while she also suffered a punctured lung, fractured clavicle, fractured sternum, compound fracture to her left ankle and lifethreatening abdominal injuries. But Booth showed great determination to make an emotional return to the saddle, and soon paired up with Zidane to make her Paralympic dreams come true. Booth was relieved after her first ride in Tokyo, telling channel seven that she was proud of representing Australia in the Paralympic Games. She was also proud of Zidane, after the pair faced an early hiccup. “It was really good, I’m just really happy to be here and representing my country on the world stage for a second time,” Booth said. “I think the performance tonight was really good, there were a few bits where we could have gained a few extra points here and there but overall, I’m just super happy that he (Zi-
dane) stayed with me, he looked after me. “The weather conditions here, it’s pretty humid, he was super, so I’m stoked, really happy.” Booth then explained just how much time and effort went in to facing the judging panel for the first Paralympics in five years. “With any sport there’s so much that goes on behind the scenes to get one athlete here, and I’ve said it before, that I’m the one riding in the arena but there’s a whole team of people that have got me to this point,” she said. “And with horses there’s just a whole other layer of things that need to be done in order to get them here. “I don’t think a lot of people really realise just how much actually goes into, not only getting here, but then keeping the horse sound, getting them on that stage and actually being able to do our thing…. there’s a lot.” Booth became emotional when explaining the impact that Zidane has had on her life since the pair were first introduced on the Mornington Peninsula.
“Zidane has taken me on a journey that is beyond words, he’s really changed my life, and he’ll retire after this,” Booth said, before wiping away her tears. “So again, this was just so good to be able to do what I love with him…for the last time. “He’s an amazing horse and one that is going to be very difficult to replace, so it’s going to be an emotional journey from here on here out.” Booth said Zidane had definitely helped her with the healing process. “Absolutely, after my accident in 2013 he really gave my life purpose and meaning and he’s done for me what I think no other person or people could have done,” she said. “Him and my family and friends at home, and everybody that has supported us on the journey, it’s just been amazing. “It’s just a really big relief to have actually done it and it’s been five years in the making, and that in itself has added a whole other layer to Zidane’s journey and getting him here.”
Melbourne City announce key signings for Casey Fields By Nick Creely Melbourne City FC is continuing to make key signing announcements as it begins preparations for the A-League and W-League season. The club - which is beginning to settle in nicely to its new home in Casey Fields - have announced the re-signing of W-League captain Emma Checker on a two-year deal. Having joined City in 2019, Checker has made 23 appearances for the club and was named captain last season. Playing in a star-studded team during her first season at City, Checker was part of the record-breaking 2019/20 squad that went through the season undefeated on their way to a premiership and championship double. having represented New Zealand in the last two Women’s World Cups as well as the last three Olympics. “It’s exciting to have a player with a resume like Hannah’s join us for the upcoming season,” Vidosic said. “She’ll be a goal-scoring threat in the final third for us and she has shown her quality in Europe and on the international stage plenty of times in recent years. “Hannah will provide us with some crucial experience and leadership on the pitch and we expect her to complement our style of play well. “We look forward to her arriving in Melbourne and joining us for pre-season.” City has also announced the re-signing of of defender Chelsea Blissett for the next three seasons after missing all of last season due to an ACL injury.
City’s A-League squad has also confirmed a key signing, with central defender Jordon Hall inking a two-year contract keeping him at the club until the end of the 2022/23 season. A product of City’s Academy, the 23-yearold is an athletic ball-playing central defender who has spent the last two seasons at NPL club Green Gully. “Jordon is a player who came through the City Academy and after two excellent seasons in the NPL with Green Gully, we feel is ready to take the next step at A-League level,” Melbourne City FC Director of Football Michael Petrillo said: “He’s good on the ball, defends well, is mobile and suits the City style of play perfectly. Local guns up for Combine By Nick Creely Four emerging Dandenong Stingray youngsters have been named in the NAB League Combine with plenty of Victorians set to show their wares in front of AFL recruiters. With the uncertainty of the Covid-19 pandemic, the annual draft combines will be purely state-based in 2021, but regardless, the emerging AFL stars will have plenty of opportunity to impress with the draft now only a matter of months away. The exciting Mac Andrew (Berwick), Miller Bergman (Berwick), Judson Clarke (Berwick) and Connor Macdonald (Doveton) have all been selected from the Stingrays in what is likely to be a fruitful draft period for the Shepley Oval-based NAB League outfit. Star News Group interviewed Bergman - a beaming runner with plenty of scope for improvement - in May this year, where he spoke about his desire to make it to the AFL level, and how he’s used Covid as a way to improve not only his fitness, but his game. “During games I just try and run as much as possible and be loud, then try and use it when I’ve got it,” he said. “During the Covid lockdown (in 2020) I was running maybe three to four times a week. “5km, 10km, then sometimes a short 1km run to just tick the legs over every now and then. “Now that training is back, I run once or twice a week. I am preparing for the harder stages if I am able and lucky enough to get there. “I have gone and watched North Melbourne train, I am a mad North Melbourne supporter, I have seen how hard they work at training, I have tried to get that into my own scenario. “Keep fit and work hard, it is never going to get easier the higher you go.” The 2021 NAB AFL Draft Combines - with the Victorian combine to be held on 9 and/ or 10 October in Melbourne - will assess each player’s physical strengths through several tests including 20-metre sprint, agility tests and vertical jump.

Hot shots to benefit from A Lucky night for Lance change to basketball size By Jason Adams
A focus on better shooting and handling skills for Victorian junior basketball players has led Basketball Victoria to introduce size 5 basketballs for its Under-12 competitions. Following months of in-depth research and a recommendation paper from its High-Performance Head Coaches, Basketball Victoria is excited to implement the change starting in September 2021. This change is in the players’ best interest as the smaller ball helps improve shooting skills at an earlier age. The size 5 ball will allow under-12 players to develop correct techniques with an appropriately sized ball before transitioning to larger basketballs in older age groups. In-game performances, training sessions, external case studies, and a number of interviews formed the basis of a recommendation paper, which was approved by the board of BV in July. The smaller basketball will be introduced to the Victorian Junior Basketball League (VJBL) for the 2021/2022 season as well as Junior Country Basketball League (CBL), Country Championships, Metropolitan and Country Jamborees, as well as Skills Days and other High Performance related programs from January 2022. Players will continue to use a size 6 basketball - under-14 boys/under-14 girls and older – and size-7 balls in under-16 boys and older in Basketball Victoria competitions. “We want to enable Victorian players to develop exceptional shooting skills so they can take their talents to the highest level across Australia and the world,” General Manager – High Performance and Pathway Grant Wallace said. 26 STAR NEWS

Lucky Lance recorded his first Victorian city win last Thursday night at Sandown Park for trainer and part-owner Gavin Kearns. ‘Lance’ defeated hot prospect Rebellious comfortably in the night’s Grade 5 final and continues to justify the decision by connections to purchase him. “A mate of mine in Queensland, Robert Ayres, noticed him and we were looking to buy a dog. So we purchased him off Andy Lord and he’s been wonderful for us. I half own him with Robert and his family,” said Kearns. He was bought after just one start at Temora in New South Wales in March. Ayres took training duties in Queensland and they quickly saw success. He won six of his next 15 starts which included the Listed Chief Havoc Cup at Gunnedah in June. “There weren’t too many races to target so he came down here for the Maturity in July. Unfortunately we had to scratch as he was ill.
Since then he’s had four starts and won his past two at Sandown Park. “We got him back to the track and here we are today.” Lucky Lance is one of just three racing greyhounds at Kearns’ Churchill property. He’s been connected to the sport his whole life though has been on and off when it comes to training due to work. “I’ve been training on and off for 30 years. It’s getting hard for me, it’s getting tough to trial at times outside of working hours.” “I work at the Yallourn Power Station looking after all of the conveyor systems, and have done that for 20-odd years now.” He was introduced to the sport at a young age which planted the seeds for lifelong involvement. “My dad had a few dogs when I was growing up and we used to walk them. He got out of it for a little bit then one of my mates bred a litter. He asked me if I wanted some of them, I got back involved and I’ve been hooked ever since.”

Tigers hunt for local stars By Nick Creely There’s no secret that talented Victorian young cricketers, and certainly from the south-east, enjoy playing cricket at Richmond, but more importantly flourish in the highly successful program under Shannon Young. The Tigers continue to build a strong reputation for developing some of Victoria’s most talented cricketers, with an influx of underage state representatives, contracted players and emerging youngsters making for one exciting list at Central Reserve. Names like Jake Fraser-McGurk, Mitch Perry and Wil Parker are already well-known, having come through the program and now flourishing at state level, but there are more success stories on the horizon. Young told Star News that it’s certainly an exciting time for the club, who are in the midst of a five-year plan to bring together the list and hopefully build into sustained success, both on-field and in progressing its players to the next level. “It’s mostly young guys, the list we’ve built over the last few years, everyone’s in agreement, it’s pretty talented,” he said. “Our job is to give these guys opportunities at first and second XI level and let them find their feet and understand the standard and individually what they need to upskill in. “We made the decision three years ago to take on an AFL model I guess - traditionally, you have 13 or 14 guys you consider really crucial to your first XI plans, but we expanded that out to 20, particularly with Covid and one-day cricket, what we’ve seen is more interruptions, so we had to extend those guys. “That’s the path we’ve gone down - in the last two years, we’ve played just over 30 guys in first XI cricket.” The Tigers have had very little movement this off-season, locking away their exciting crop of kids, but have injected some experience in, with Berwick premiership player and ex-Casey-South Melbourne club champion Brendan Rose linking with the club in an exciting playing-coaching capacity. “Rosey’s come across, he’s played some T20s for us, and he’ll probably increase our depth, and he’ll come across in a bowling coach capacity as well,” Young said. “In terms of having a young group, if you’re going to go out and get senior guys, you want someone that’s going to offer a lot to the group, so Rosey’s much a recruit from an off-field perspective as much as on-field. “He’s a good player, and from a depth point of view we expect he’ll be thereabouts.” While on experience, the Tigers will be once again led by skipper Dom Matarazzo, who Young praised for his exceptional “communication skills”, while reigning Ryder Medalist Scott Edwards is locked in again but will only play eight to ten games because he will be representing Netherlands in the T20 World Cup this year.

He’ll call Central Reserve home in 2021/22. 231263 While Young expects his Tigers to be competitive this season, and continuing injecting games into the kids while also focusing on winning games of cricket, he admits the club’s focus is producing Victorian and Australian cricketers. “It’s all well and good to have this young talent, and get the talent identification right, we’ve worked really hard on our academy, but you have to give them opportunities, so for me, having 10 guys around the Victorian Under 19 setup, five or six in the CA system, and three obviously on Victoria’s senior list, seeing the development is super exciting, and it changes the way you coach,” he said. “It changes how you evaluate performance, so what we’re building hopefully is the base for the next five years. “We hope all these guys come through, play good cricket together and hopefully get to 50 or 60 games at the same time - from a coaching point of view, it’s the reason why I front up to do it.” The Tigers have a stack of kids coming through state pathway systems, with Jordan Hesline, emerging off-spinning star Reiley Mark from Berwick who is one of the brightest prospects in the state, another local in Shobit

Young said the pair - hailing from Dandenong District Cricket Association clubs North Dandenong and Buckley Ridges respectively are ones to keep an eye on this season. “All those names are in a developmental phase so expect good things from all of them, but two who are a bit older are Pednekar and D’Rozario who I’m really excited about,” he said. “Both Vic Country representatives, Jono was captain, and there’s never been a question mark over Yash’s talent, he really broke through in the twos with some big hundreds and put together some strong performances in the ones. “Those guys are exciting - (Dylan) Tibbals is another one, he’s had injuries and manages that well, so if he gets a fair crack, he’s got xfactor - can take a new ball and whack it with the bat, has an arm like a cannon, and if there’s

a focus on one-day games, we expect him to really come to the fore.” With Covid-19 lockdowns preventing another proper pre-season, Young said it was a challenging time, but remains hopeful that cricket will resume soon. “It’s near impossible to (plan) be fair there’s some certain stuff, we had last year as a bit of a benchmark so we know it can be done,” he said. “In terms of the playing group, we’re not super big on Zoom, most of my guys sit there all day with school and stuff - we’ve done a couple of little things, like a trivia night, split guys into groups. “But in terms of planning, and practice matches, you’re basically putting a line through it until you get the go ahead. “Obviously you’re governed by restrictions and how that looks for training - you’ve got to be hopeful and put on a bit of a brave face for your blokes. But planning goes out the window.” The Tigers are fixtured to take on Dandenong at home to kick off the season, with Cricket Victoria hoping the season will start on 2 October.
Cricket Victoria Premier fixture a cat with nine lives By Nick Creely Cricket Victoria (CV) is hoping for the Victorian Premier Cricket season to begin on Saturday 2 October, but have released a breakdown of the season which is based around nine different scenarios. In a document seen by Star News Group, CV has confirmed that the plans are in place for the season to begin on the first weekend of October, provided that lockdown ends on or before 10 September, which would give clubs ample time to complete at least three weeks of pre-season training. “Due to the current Covid situation, we again find ourselves in a position of uncertainty about the commencement of the 2021/22 Premier Cricket season,” CV told clubs. “To ensure the clubs, players, coaches and officials have some clarity about what the season will look like, CV Management in collaboration with the Premier Cricket Operations Advisory Group have developed a number of different scenarios which will be implementcranbournenews.starcommunity.com.au

However, with a number of scenarios in place to cater to Victorian restrictions, the season will convert to purely one-dayers once again if the season can’t begin until at least 30 October. There is also a Premier Cricket v Vic State Squad exhibition match locked in for Sunday 16 January, which generated plenty of interest last season. If the lockdown ends by 10 September, the Women’s season is set to begin on Sunday 3 October, in what will be a 14-round whiteball campaign. The Women’s grand final will be played on Sunday 13 March. The latest the Women’s season can start is Sunday 28 November, with the grand final to be pushed back to the latest date of Sunday 20 March Also included in the fixture is seven Twenty20s, with the grand final for the Twenty20s to be played on Wednesday 26 January (Australia Day).
