Welcome to the Rockhampton Region By Mayor Tony Williams, Rockhampton Region FROM beef to barra and where the outback meets the ocean, I hope you enjoy all that beautiful home has to offer. No matter how you like to holiday, there is something for you here. If adventure calls, take in some of the best fishing anywhere in Australia with one of our charters helping you land the giant barra and king threadfin that stalk the Fitzroy River. If fishing isn’t enough to get your blood pumping, a short drive over the river will land you at Mount Archer, a National Park with a peak over 600 metres above sea level. Here you can find everything from heart-stopping mountain biking to gentle skywalks and trails that wind through the clouds. Bushwalks range from 200 metres along the summit to around five hours if you want to travel from the peak to the bottom. Before you go, make sure you check out the maps and advice (https://www.npsr.qld. gov.au/parks/mount-archer/about.html) to be properly prepared – with 300 days of sunshine a year, it pays to pack that extra bottle of water no matter the season. There’s also our free zoo which is home

to the only chimpanzee troop in Queensland, including a number of adorable young ones. We also have cuddly koalas and ferocious crocodiles so make sure you come and say hi to our zoo family. In fact, why not spend the day and take in our botanic gardens located right next door? After a full day of exploring the region, Rockhampton is also the perfect place to wind down. Enjoy fine dining at one of our restaurants near the Riverside precinct or take in a picnic on a scenic river cruise – just keep an eye out for crocodiles. While you’re visiting, I highly recommend a visit to historic Mount Morgan. Once home to Australia’s most successful gold mine, the hinterland town has a rich history which is well worth the trip for. No matter where you go in the Rockhampton region, there’s something to do and see. From the outback to the ocean, there’s an experience to be had, a place to be visited and a memory to make.

Meet Rocky’s Big Bulls ROCKHAMPTON prides itself as being the Beef Capital of Australia and this is represented by the city’s famous bull statues. Six statues representing the main breeds of the area are situated throughout Rockhampton.

The statues are located near highways and major roads and were built to be realistic depictions of the breeds: 1. The Brahman Bull was erected in 2000 at the roundabout on the southern entrance to the city. 2. The Santa Gertrudis Bull, in Frank Ford Park was erected in 1985. 3. The Droughtmaster Bull, at the entrance to the airport was erected in 1994. 4. The Braford Bull, located on the Bruce Highway was erected in 1978. 5. The Romangnola Bull, located in O’Shannesy Park, was erected in 1997 to commemorate the Italian Beef Cattle World Congress. 6. The Brahman Bull, located in the median strip near the Red Hill Homemaker Centre was erected in 1978 and represents the breed most suitable to this climate.

The culture runs deep here A VISIT to Rockhampton would be incomplete without a visit to the only Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Cultural Centre of its kind in Regional Queensland. Dreamtime Cultural Centre is the only Cultural Centre that offers tours and talks from both Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander tour guides. Dreamtime has been sharing Traditional stories since it opened more than 30 years ago, way back in 1988. The highly recommended guided tour commences at 10.30am weekdays. Fossick for thundereggs LOCATED 30 minutes west of Rockhampton on the Capricorn Highway, Mount Hay Gemstone Tourist Park is internationally known as a destination for thunderegg fossicking. Mount Hay is the remains of an extinct ancient volcano, which was last active about 120 million years ago.

Fossicking Visitors can fossick through piles of thundereggs. Each visitor is given a bag for their stones, a tool to fossick, and shown what to look for. Any stones collected can be kept, and upon completion of their search each person can have a couple of stones cut for free. Fees apply for fossicking and enclosed footwear is required.

Spectacular Wreck Point COOEE Bay, just south of the Yeppoon CBD, is home to one of the Capricorn Coast’s most spectacular lookouts. Wreck Point Scenic Lookout on Matthew Flinders Drive is an undisputed ‘must see’. The lookout depicts a ship’s deck and boasts almost 360-degree views of the

Tops, located two and a half hours south of Rockhampton, is worth a stopover if travelling in that direction. As this is a National Park, a permit is required to camp; however, there is the option to visit for the day and explore.

Past patient Riley Tomlin recalls Last year on a cattle station near Moura, Riley Tomlin traded in his bulldozer for a motorbike and returned to the role of stockman. “I had 5-6 years experience in mustering so when they asked, I said yep” It would be a fateful decision as an unknown landscape proved to be dangerous for Riley. “I was mustering on my motorbike when a beast broke away from the mob so I went to chase it. Not knowing the country, I guess I’ve come off. I upended the motorbike a couple of times and it landed on top of my right thigh. It punctured and cut a few arteries.” Riley’s workmates were quick to his side, putting pressure on a gaping wound and calling RACQ CapRescue by pressing the button on their satellite

tracking device. Station director Ben says the memory of how close they went to losing the “big fellas life” stays with the close knit family business. So much so, the company thought it was important to recognise RACQ CapRescue, through a donation, stating that it was a bad accident, with a really great outcome. Today Riley is back on the property doing all the things he loves to do, but he hasn’t forgotten the crew “worth their weight in gold”. “The RACQ CapRescue crew were phenomenal, they got me to hospital in one piece and alive, which is more than anyone could ask for with the severity of the injury. There would be a lot more lives lost if there wasn’t people around like them”

Climb 600 metres to Turtle Lookout for a great view of Keppel Bay and spot turtles swimming in the water beneath you. Toilets and BBQ’s available at picnic facilities just a short walk from the car park.

FAN ROCK AND ROSSLYN BAY LOOKOUTS

BYFIELD NATIONAL PARK Located 30 minutes drive north of Yeppoon, Byfield National Park offers a number of walking trails.

MOUNT ETNA CAVES NATIONAL PARK Located 25km north of Rockhampton, Mount Etna Caves National Park has two walking trails. Cammoo Circuit Grade: Easy Distance: 600m return Time: 45 minutes Wander through dry rainforest ecosystem and limestone caves and outcrops.

Expansive views of limestone ridge, the historic Pilkington Quarry and old mine wording feature strongly on this walk. These tracks are closed to independent visitor’s during the bats’ breeding season from 1 November to the end of February. Rocky Girls Grammar School ROCKHAMPTON Girls Grammar School’s (RGGS) agricultural studies, offered as an elective from Year 8 through to Year 12, is providing girls with access to the latest research through partnerships with local businesses and industry such as Central Queensland University, Fitzroy Basin Association and Department of Agriculture, as well as local cropping farmers and livestock producers. Constructed by students in 2020, the garden beds incorporate small crops such as vegetables and herbs, potted colour and also companion planting and harvesting yields. Fruit trees will provide a long-term environment and learning opportunities as well. The new gardens also strengthen the partnership between the classroom and the dining room, through the use of vegetables and herbs grown by the girls as part of their studies. The Girls Grammar Show Team is run out of “Tea Tree Park” at Bouldercombe, a short 15-minute drive from the school. The girls work with cattle, donated through the generosity of our community, to build their insights into animal husbandry and animal welfare. The RGGS show team is well recognised at major cattle showing events in Queensland, including Beef Week every three years. Boarding students can also agist their horses at “Tea Tree Park” whilst they are at school. Current facilities include covered stables, day yards, a sand arena and small paddocks, as well as a feed shed, and a tack shed for storage. This supports girls with a passion for equestrian to remain connected to their horses and engage in their love of riding whilst at boarding school. Lessons by a qualified instructor can also be facilitated, as can the opportunity to join and participate in local clubs. Girls Grammar is an active member of Equestrian Australia. Girls participate in dressage; show jumping; camp drafting; eventing; showman; and combined training. They also compete at the Interschool Sporting event which attracts over 150 local riders. Over the years, Girls Grammar girls have been successful in qualifying and being selected in the Queensland team to compete at national level. Girls Grammar is more than a school, it’s a community. Plenty of entertainment in CQ THE Pilbeam Theatre is one of the finest theatres in regional Australia and is the focal point for the performing arts in Central Queensland. ‘The Pilbeam’ offers a diverse range of productions all year round from the best local, national and international entertainers. Drama, dance, music, comedy – you’ll be laughing, crying, marveling and held in suspense. It all began on 6 June 1979 when the venue was officially opened by the Governor General of Australia, Sir Zelman Cowen. Following the opening there were nine days of celebratory performances by local and touring companies including the Queensland Symphony Orchestra, Queensland Ballet, Rockhampton Little Theatre, Rockhampton Youth Orchestra, Rockhampton Brass and Pipe Bands and local dance schools. Local firm Neil McKendry Architects was engaged to design the building, which was built, along with the Art Gallery, at a combined cost of $3.5M, according to newspaper reports of the day. Within the first few years of operation, the Pilbeam Theatre had hosted performances by international artists and shows including the Compagnie Philippe Genty, George and Mildred, Ertha Kitt, Galapagos Duck, The Platters, Jon English, Peter Allen, The Rocky Horror Show, Spike Milligan, Charlie Pride, Dick Emery, Ronricco, Slim Dusty, The Black and White Minstrel Show and Harry Secombe. It also hosted regular performances by local groups including the Rockhampton Musical Union Choir, Rockhampton Little Theatre and Beverley Prange Academy of Dance. 44

Spectacular Show at Yeppoon By Ken Landsberg, Yeppoon and District Show Society president YEPPOON and District Show Society Inc will hold our annual two-day show on the 5 and 6 June. A true agricultural show, we have cattle, horses, a petting zoo with all the small animals, as well as pavilions with all sorts of competitions. There’s cooking, embroidery, quilts, arts and crafts, photography, pottery, horticulture, rare fruits, pineapples and pumpkins, a wheelbarrow competition for green thumbs, a Lego competition, an innovation invention competition, woodwork, wood chops and a historical society display. Schools will create displays on our theme, Sustainability in Agriculture. Our entertainment this year will include a fashion parade and a puppet show with life size puppets made out of Huon pine. Both of these will be held on a portable stage out in the ring on both days of the show. Don’t miss the Airtime FMX motorbikes doing acts over a ramp, these guys are real daredevils and put on a great show. There’s also Luke Cheyne’s Reptile

Kingdom, a fireworks display, a night show with a variety of acts, numerous food stalls and a variety of other stallholders displaying their products and wares. And of course the Showmen’s Alley with all sorts of rides and knock’em stalls. Our gate fees are $10 for adults, $5 school children and seniors, with under school age free. fruit doves, king parrots, lyrebirds and a collection of water birds that forage in the pond. Once inside the aviary, you can walk through to the Cassowary viewing platform. As you wind your way around the Zoo, a must-see are the family of chimpanzees. Rockhampton Zoo is one of only four zoos across Australia with chimpanzees, and the family of seven includes two baby chimps, with the older sibling being the first chimp to be born in Queensland since the 1970s.

Long history of racing HORSE racing has a long and cherished history in Rockhampton dating back to 1868 when the Rockhampton Jockey Club was formed. In fact, the first race meeting in the city was held in July 1868 at the original racetrack in West Rockhampton. Callaghan Park racecourse virtually located in the heart of Rockhampton close to the Fitzroy River and a stone’s throw from the City Centre, has been the home of racing in the city since 1898. The track with a circumference of over 1600 metres is widely regarded as one of the best turf tracks in Australia. For over a century until the opening of the grass track in September 1984, racing was run regularly if not every Saturday on a sandy loam track. Since the transformation to a grass surface, racing in Rockhampton, which is one of the city’s biggest industries, has become a major player in Queensland. It’s Saturday and mid-week TAB racing dates attracts horses, trainers and jockeys from far and wide throughout Queensland and interstate. Over the years some of Australia’s best

jockeys have ridden at Callaghan Park – the likes of Melbourne Cup winners Peter Cook, Darren Beadman and Harry White – just to name a few. Rockhampton has always been associated with a lucrative Winter Racing Carnival run annually in June and July but in recent years a feast of racing in Autumn has added a new dimension. During the month of April, the Capricornia Yearling Sale Racing Carnival is staged. It comprises two days of outstanding TAB race meetings – Friday, April 9 and Saturday, April 10 as well as yearling sales on the Sunday, April 11. The Capricornia Yearling Sale (running

for 25 years) is unique in that is the only one of its kind staged in a regional city in Australia with all the others staged in the Capital Cities or the Gold Coast. In 2021, the CYS Carnival will offer almost $500,000 in prize money while a first-class draft of 100 yearlings will be auctioned by the Magic Millions company at the Rockhampton Showgrounds on April 11. The fabric of the racing industry in Rockhampton is renowned for its hospitality and the social activities and functions conducted by the race club. Take the scenic route WITH 23 kilometres of coastline to explore, make sure you follow the Scenic Highway from Yeppoon to Emu Park and witness some of the best beaches the Capricorn Coast has to offer. Rosslyn Bay is a man-made harbour and is a popular local fishing spot. The harbour has a public jetty, boat ramps, Yacht Club, Coast Guard and service station. Perfect spot for fishing Fishing and the Fitzroy River Rockhampton is the only city in Australia where you can fly in, check in and boat out in less than an hour targeting trophy Barramundi and King Threadfin. The Fitzroy River (Tunuba) is famous for Barramundi, pronounced “bardda moon di” by the Darumbal people. This defines the Fitzroy River catchment as the genuine Home of the Barramundi in Australia. King Threadfin are also found in abundance in the Fitzroy River (Tunuba), the largest river on the eastern seaboard of Australia. With a total catchment area of 156,000 square kilometres, the river provides prime estuary and freshwater fishing country. The floodplain holds a number of freshwater lagoons, brackish lagoons and waterholes. These include some easily accessible lagoons on the south side of the city which can be fished from the bank.

When to come With over 300 days of sunshine a year and warm winter weather, Rockhampton is a fishing destination to visit all year round. If you are heading to Rockhampton to target trophy Barra, it’s best to visit in Barramundi Season. Starting at midday on 1 February each year, Barramundi Season stretches right through till midday on 1 November and allows you to target barramundi and take home your catch. When the season closes, barramundi must not be targeted to allow the fish to spawn. If you happen to catch a Barra within season close, just remember to release it back into the water. 72

What to catch As the largest river system on the eastern seaboard of Australia, the Fitzroy River (Tunuba) provides prime estuary and freshwater fishing options with a range of fish species available to catch. The most popular are Barramundi and King Threadfin. Barra are a fast growing fish and commonly reach legal size in just three years. They can attain trophy sizes of a metre and more in as little as six or seven years, and may survive well into their teens. Barramundi spawn between the months of

October to December each year, making it Barramundi close season from November to January each year. Threadies are a spectacular, hard-fighting fish that rapidly reach a similar status to barramundi in the eyes of keen sport fishers. There are plenty of trophy-sized threadfin over a metre in length, and while they may be easy to find, they can be a little more challenging to catch. No matter who you are, how you want to fish, or what you want to catch, the Fitzroy River (Tunuba) is ready to welcome you. Big river on city landscape By Sean Fox TRADITIONAL owners of the land surrounding the Fitzroy River catchment, the Darumbal people knew it as Toonooba. After generations had passed, the vast waterway was given its English name by European colonial settlers and pastoralists Charles and William Archer on May 4, 1853 in honour of Sir Charles FitzRoy. Believe it or not, it was a time when Queensland was not its own separate colony. The famous boat builder, Colin Archer was the first known individual to sail up the river with his cutter, Ellida. Sitting on the river, 40km from the coastline lies the city of Rockhampton.

During the 19th and 20th centuries, the city was known for being a major port, but it was rocky boulders in the river which prohibited any further navigation upstream. Today, only small commercial fishing boats and an onboard guided tour use the river. Wharves were once found along the banks, but they have since disintegrated or been removed. Port Alma in the Fitzroy River delta is the city’s nearest port. The main industries in the catchment area include coal mining, grazing and cotton. In the earlier days of Rockhampton’s past, the Glenmore Homestead was built on

a property on the northern bank of the river, 7km northwest of the city’s reach. The historic dwelling was originally settled in 1858, and is now listed on the Queensland Heritage Register while being used as a tourist attraction and event venue. Often used for recreation, the river is used for rowing at the Rockhampton Ski Gardens upstream from the barrage. In 2018, a $36 million revitalisation of the Fitzroy river bank was opened for residents and visitors to enjoy. The new development embodies the historic spirit of the city while inviting a modern taste to the city’s landscape, leading everyone to appreciate the story of the vast river and the city that was built on it. The brilliant Barra Bash FITZROY River Barra Bash is back bigger and better in 2021! The Fitzroy River Barra Bash, Australia’s richest Barramundi fishing tournament, delivered a sensational event in 2020 despite the challenging conditions with Covid. Drawing from this success the 2021 event will be back, bigger and better than ever! Anglers will be vying for a share of over $20,000 guaranteed cash and prizes on offer at the Rockhampton event. With sold out events in 2019 and 2020, limited spaces will be available for the competition, which will run from the 27 - 31 October 2021. The competition is designed for all forms of anglers. From the experienced to the novice, and everything in between, contestants are encouraged to enjoy everything the Fitzroy has to offer, whether that be a baby king salmon, or a metre barra! In 2021 the Fitzroy River Barra Bash will grow to a 5 day event with the introduction of a new Celebrity Fish-Off where all prize money will be donated to charities of choice. This will be held on Wednesday 27th October in line with the main competitions registration evening.
