Vale Ray Brown By Gabriella Payne Councillor Ray Brown sadly passed away on Friday 16 April after a prolonged illness, and people throughout Cardinia have paid their respects to him and his “exceptional” work over the past few days. Remembered as an “exceptional councillor” and community advocate, Cr Brown made a lasting impact in the area, both in his time as a Cardinia Shire Councillor representing the Westernport Ward and as a passionate volunteer. At the council meeting on Monday 19 April, councillors each paid tribute to Ray Brown as they remembered his passionate advocacy for local issues, his many achievements and the “mountain of a man” that he was. The Cardinia Shire Council informed the Gazette that same day that the relevant processes were underway to select someone to take over Cr Brown’s position. At this stage, it is still not determined who will step into the role of Westernport Ward Councillor, but a Cardinia Shire Council spokesperson said that the appropriate authorities had been advised of Cr Brown’s passing. “(Cardinia Shire) council has notified the Minister for Local Government and the VEC who will in turn advise the council and the community of the next legislative steps,“ the spokesperson said on Monday. On Wednesday 21 April, the council spokesperson said that they had not yet heard back from the VEC or Minister for Local Government about who would be stepping in to Cr Brown’s position, but they expected to know in the coming weeks. In the meantime, the spokesperson said that Westernport Ward residents could reach out to the Cardinia Shire Council directly if they had any queries or concerns and added that neighbouring councillors in the area would also be more than willing to help. Cr Brown is survived by his wife Ellen, three children, three step-children, seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

‘Gender lens’ is needed A south eastern women’s health and wellbeing agency has urged the State Government to adopt a gender lens when considering social and affordable housing. Women’s Health in the South East (WHISE) has submitted a response to the Victorian Government’s 10-year vision for social and affordable housing applying a gender lens to demonstrate the need for equitable access to housing for women. “Women are most negatively impacted by housing instability and homelessness and the two biggest risk factors are domestic and family violence and being aged over 55 years,” says WHISE CEO, Ms Kit McMahon. Using their extensive experience working with women in the community and by consulting with a representative from Olive’s Place - a refuge service which provides support to women and children escaping family violence - WHISE submitted a list of recommendations for increasing equitable access to housing for women. WHISE recommended that the Victorian Government: 1. Ensure that social and affordable housing is close to major facilities, services and infrastructure; 2. Build a State Government housing plan and 10-year vision that is based on the reality of changing demographics in our community, for example, larger families with 5 or more children; 3. Design a plan where all emergency and social housing meets the needs of marginalised and disadvantaged women; 4. Improve the system for transferring women between different types of accommodation. “Whilst a large increase in social and affordable housing options is a long-term solution, there are also urgent changes which need to occur to lessen women’s need for social housing and/or alleviate some of

Three additional recommendations were also proposed by WHISE: 1. Fund support services for women once they have transitioned out of crisis accommodation; 2. Make childcare more affordable to increase women’s ability to work;

Pakenham murderer found dead in cell

The man who murdered Pakenham mother-of-three Kylie Blackwood has been found dead in his maximum-security prison cell. Scott Murdoch, 43, was convicted to life in prison last year after he pleaded guilty to the murder of Ms Blackwood in 2013. Murdoch’s body was found around 6am on Monday 19 April at Melbourne Assessment Prison, where he was set to serve his 36-year minimum non-parole period. A Department of Justice and Community Service spokeswoman said: “A 43-yearold prisoner died at Melbourne Assessment Prison overnight.” “As with all deaths in custody, the matter has been referred to the Coroner, who will formally determine the cause of death.” A Victoria Police spokeswoman said it was standard for homicide detectives to investigate deaths in custody. “The exact circumstances relating to the death have yet to be determined,” the spokeswoman added. The Dandenong-born man had also been convicted to inflicting intentional serious injury to 72-year-old Ilona Prohaska, an elderly Endeavour Hills woman. The two “cowardly” stabbing attacks occurred within three months in 2013. At the time, Murdoch was on parole for a similarly brutal stabbing and bashing of Karen Cheeseman in her Berwick home in 2006. At the time of his sentencing, Justice Dixon said Murdoch had targeted women alone at home with no chance to escape. He’d shown no interest in their welfare after the attacks.

Gastro about in childcare The City of Casey has seen 17 outbreaks of dreaded gastro at childcare centres since the beginning of the year. That’s compared to just six outbreaks in neighbouring Cardinia Shire, and two in Greater Dandenong. It means Casey is second only to Greater Geelong in the gastro stakes, with the western city recording 29 outbreaks since the start of 2021. But experts say good old-fashioned handwashing with soap and water is still the best defence against the outbreak of viral gastroenteritis which has spread through Victorian early childhood education and care services this year. Overall there have been 389 outbreaks in childcare so far in 2021, up by more than 140 on a month earlier, and four times higher than the average for this time of year. Victoria’s executive director for communicable disease, Dr Bruce Bolam, said childcare workers, the children and their families all had a role to play in limiting the spread of the virus. Children needed to be taught and reminded of the need for handwashing, and families needed to keep their kiddies home from early childhood services until 48 hours after they recover. “Gastroenteritis can spread quickly through settings such as early childhood education and care services, where children play and interact closely with each other and can readily spread their bugs,” Dr Bolam said. “It is important that early childhood services have good hygiene practices in place and to respond quickly with thorough cleaning if any children become ill.

“Handwashing with soap and water is still the best personal hygiene method to minimise the chance of spreading the virus. “A good old-fashioned scrub with soap and warm water is the best way to remove the gastro virus from our hands and prevent passing it on to infect others.” Dr Bolam said that while alcohol-based sanitiser is at the front line in tackling coronavirus, it is much less effective against bugs such as norovirus, which is the predominant cause of the current childcare outbreaks. Viral gastroenteritis is highly infectious. Symptoms include nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, fever, abdominal pain, headache and muscle aches. They can take up to three days to develop and usually last between one or two days, sometimes longer. In rare cases it can develop into much more serious illness. Infants or children in early childhood services or school as well as staff who develop vomiting or diarrhoea should stay at home for at least 48 hours after their symptoms have stopped. If symptoms are severe or they persist, people should see a GP for advice and testing. Anyone recovering from gastroenteritis should avoid visiting hospitals, early childhood services and aged care facilities to avoid spreading the infection to those most vulnerable. Any person living in a household with someone who has gastroenteritis should refrain from visiting these high-risk facilities until at least 48 hours after the last person in the household has recovered.

Murdoch had tried to cover his tracks, tried to solicit false alibis from third parties and initially denied his involvement to police. A “brazen” Murdoch attended appointments with his parole officer on the same day as his attack on Ms Prohaska – before and after the event.

Ashley’s reign begins By Danielle Kutchel Narre Warren South has a new queen! Sixteen-year-old student Ashley Lucey-Jannert was crowned Miss Teen of Australia in a ceremony on Thursday 8 April. It follows a journey of more than a year - she was named as a finalist in the competition in March 2020. Ms Lucey-Jannert said it felt “incredible” to take home the sash. “This was most definitely not something I was expecting!” she said. “As this was my first time competing in a pageant, I knew that I would be lucky to receive any title or award. “Any of the girls in my division could have been crowned, the competition was that close. “When they finally called out my name, I was completely shocked but so excited!” Ms Lucey-Jannert has been dancing since the age of four, and has performed in a number of City of Casey events, as well as films, television commercials and voice-overs - so being able to attend the final of the Miss Teen of Australia competition in person was particularly special. “As a performer, I was really keen to be able to get back out in front of an audience after being in lockdown for so long,” she said. Along the way, she raised funds for the Ellen Fund, an organisation that raises money to house endangered gorillas in Rwanda. Ms Lucey-Jannert raised a stunning $2000 - a fifth of the total raised by all of the contestants in the competition.

As well as the major crown, she received the Miss Charity Princess Award and was voted Miss Teen Congeniality. She hopes now to compete in more pageants, nationally and perhaps even internationally. The newly crowned Miss Teen will use her platform to raise awareness for Beyond Blue, a charity that’s close to her heart after the loss of her uncle Sam in 2016 from mental health issues. “Throughout my reign, I am hoping to make public appearances around Melbourne to raise awareness for Beyond Blue, the Miss of Australia pageant, and hopefully empower others to be the best that they can be,” she said. It’s not just a crown and a new title that Ms Lucey-Jannert has gained; she has also come away from the competition with new friends around the country, experience in public speaking and enhanced confidence. “Winning Miss Teen of Australia 2020-2022 has made me feel like I can do absolutely anything I set my mind to and I hope that it inspires other people to feel that they too can achieve their goals. Safe at work The State Government is reminding employers of the importance of keeping vulnerable young workers safe, with the return of WorkSafe Victoria’s Unsafe is Always Unacceptable campaign. The campaign is running on digital and social platforms and features young workers being confronted with questions about their willingness to ignore health and safety concerns if it means they can secure a job. Out of 23 young workers, 21 said they would work without training, accept bullying and harassment as part of the job, and accept unsafe working conditions to secure employment. So far this year WorkSafe has accepted 774 injury claims for workers aged between 15-24, in addition to 2390 claims accepted in 2020. Nineteen per cent of these claims were in the construction industry, making it the most hazardous for young workers. A further 17 per cent were in the manufacturing industry and 8.6 per cent in retail trade. Young workers may lack experience, can be hesitant to ask questions about how to do things safely or raise safety risks and often don’t know about their health and safety rights. Employers have a responsibility to ensure every worker is safe, no matter their age or their understanding of important health and safety information. For young workers this includes ensuring they are correctly trained and empowered to speak up if they have concerns or are unsure how to complete a task safely. A cop car has been rammed by an allegedly stolen tow truck in Cranbourne. On Saturday 17 April at around 9.40am it is alleged a tow truck was stolen from a business located at the intersection of Clarendon Street and High Street in Cranbourne. A short time later the stolen tow truck was located by police in Duff Street, where it rammed a marked vehicle before driving off. The police car was extensively damaged, however fortunately no-one was injured. The tow truck was located a short time later abandoned in Central Parkway, Cranbourne West. Taking action for disability In a bid to make workplaces, services, programs and the entire community of Cardinia more accessible to disabled people, the council are calling on community feedback to help devise their new disability action plan. The community survey, which will be open from Monday 26 April until Monday 7 June, will gather local’s thoughts on how best to make the Cardinia Shire more disability-friendly. Cardinia Shire Council Mayor, Brett Owen, encouraged everyone to get involved so that a strong and considered plan could be created and implemented in the area. “To create a strong disability action plan, we need people who live, work, study and visit Cardinia Shire to tell us what the council can do to support our people with disability, creating an accessible and inclusive community,” Cr Owen said. The disability action plan will be based on four key principles from the Victorian Disability Act of 2006. These include reducing barriers to help people with a disability in accessing goods, services and facilities, reducing barriers for disabled people when it comes to finding and maintaining work, promoting inclusion and participation for all people within the community and lastly, achieving changes in attitudes and practices which discriminate

A trek to keep kids safe AFL legend Matthew ‘Richo’ Richardson and a team of trekkers are undertaking Western Australia’s famous Cape to Cape walking track this October to raise funds for Narre Warren based not-for-profit Windermere Child and Family Services. The group of 27 trekkers are raising funds to support Windermere’s Kids on Track program. The early intervention and preventative program works within local schools and in partnership with Victoria Police. It targets vulnerable children at year 5 and 6 level and covers topics such as anger management, drugs and alcohol, bullying and cyber safety. Kids on Track is designed to support children to make safer life decisions, increase their

understanding of what they can do if they feel threatened or unsafe and reduce their risk of being involved in antisocial or criminal behaviours. Each individual Cape2Cape participant has committed to raise $2,500 towards the cause. “Prevention is always better than a cure. I want our kids to know who can help them if they or a friend feels unsafe or worried about something and what to do about it,” says Mr Richardson. Recognition: Council in running for Vic sport award By Gabriella Payne The annual Victorian Sport Awards champion the best our state’s sporting clubs and programs have to offer - and this year, the Cardinia Shire Council is in the running to take out one of the top prizes. Nominated as a finalist for their ‘mental health in sports clubs’ program, the Cardinia Shire Council is excited to have been recognised for their work throughout Melbourne’s 2020 lockdowns, which helped many people remain healthy - both mentally and physically - through a tough period of time. The Cardinia Shire Council active communities manager, Kristen Jackson, said that it was great to be acknowledged in the ‘Bunnings trade local government initiative of the year’ category for this program, which had

helped train clubs in mental health first aid courses throughout the year. “We are pleased to be a finalist in the Victorian Sport Awards for our ‘mental health in sports clubs’ program,” Ms Jackson said. “The program was established to help build the capacity of volunteers through a recognised accredited mental health first aid course, in partnership with the Richmond Institute and Monash Health.” Ms Jackson said that between October and December of last year, the program had helped 24 people from 15 different clubs in the Cardinia Shire to complete the mental health first aid course - and had helped shine a light on the importance of looking after one’s mental health. Vicsport CEO, Lisa Hasker, applauded

the Cardinia Shire Council for their efforts and said that it was “fantastic” to see initiatives like this connecting people with sports throughout the worst of last year’s lockdown. “It’s fantastic to see lots of councils doing these programs and shows that the hard work they did over Covid to keep [people] connected with sport has worked,” Ms Hasker said. “Obviously we were worried about people being away from clubs, not having that connection, that comradery and not being with their buddies at sporting clubs - and Cardinia obviously recognised that, which is just fantastic.” After being deemed a resounding “success”, Ms Jackson said that the program had inspired the council to continue the program

Great Art Show’s back By Danielle Kutchel A favourite Berwick art show is returning for its 21st year. The Haval Great Art Show will be held over the weekend of 23 - 25 April at Nossal High School, Federation University Campus Berwick. The event is sponsored by Berwick Motor Group’s Haval dealership. This is the 21st major show organised by Provenance Artists Inc, a not-for-profit society of artists from the City of Casey and Cardinia Shire. The Great Art Show is now the largest art show in the south east and features amazing pieces from leading Victorian and interstate artists, including multicultural artists. More than just paintings, the Great Art Show will include a variety of exhibits showcasing different forms and modes - even sculptures. This year’s exhibition will also feature paintings from Provenance Artists’ Lest We Forget - Vietnam exhibition, a collection of 30 paintings of Vietnam veterans and their memories of the war. After the Great Art Show, the Lest We Forget exhibition will be given to the National Vietnam Veterans Museum on Phillip Island.

Council an award finalist By Gabriella Payne All sorts of organisations, including local councils, are learning to adapt and transform in this digital age as the times keep on a changin’ - and our very own Cardinia Shire Council have been recognised for doing just that. The Cardinia Shire Council have been chosen as one of the finalists in the 2021 Municipal Association of Victoria (MAV) Technology Awards for Excellence - and are one of only ten Victorian councils to have done so. These annual awards are held to recognise how local government councils are transforming and adapting so that they can continue to serve the community in the ever-changing digital era. The MAV President, David Clark, said that the award finalists were all excellent candidates and reflected the hard work that councils were putting in to enable a cultural and technological shift, Australia wide. “Across the sector, especially in response to the Covid-19 pandemic, councils have embraced digital solutions as a way to maintain high levels of community service in difficult circumstances,” Mr Clark said. “These awards are an excellent opportunity to share key learnings, as well as congratulate those involved for their innovative thinking and cross-organisational collaboration to move these digital projects from conception to implementation,” he said. The Cardinia Shire Council have been selected as a finalist in the ‘digital leadership achievement of the year’ category for their work on the ‘Cardinia M365 records transition’

project, and a council spokesperson said that they were thrilled to be in the running to win this prestigious award. “We are so pleased to be a finalist in the 2021 MAV Technology Awards for Excellence, after the hard work and careful planning of our information services team, to transition our organisation to a new online document management system,” the spokesperson said. “The project involved introducing a userfriendly system to capture all organisational records. Shifting to this platform was one project in a series of bigger projects that helped enable easier remote working during the pandemic,” they explained. “The project saw a very large number of documents transitioned from the old system to the new system, compliant record capture across key systems, a comprehensive training program for our entire workforce and more, which was delivered internally by our information services team.” Other Victorian councils in the running are the Hobsons Bay City Council, Brimbank City Council, City of Boroondara, City of Casey, City of Greater Geelong, City of Melbourne, Melton City Council, Alpine Shire Council and Yarriambiack Shire Council. The winners in each of the five categories will be announced at the MAV’s Awards for Excellence dinner on Thursday 29 April at Marvel Stadium, Melbourne and the winners will then be eligible for the Victorian and Australian Achievements of the Year.

Halls of power: Students meet with local leader By Danielle Kutchel Students at St Francis Xavier’s Officer campus are honing their leadership skills in a new school program. The program sees students purposefully develop their leadership skills through a series of focused projects and discussions with invited community leaders. The first session was with Western Bulldogs AFLW coach Nathan Burke. On Thursday 1 April, Gembrook MP Brad Battin visited the school to meet a cohort of Year 9 students, where he spoke about his personal leadership experience as a small business owner, police officer and politician. Describing the visit as “a pleasure”, Mr

Battin said the students were “very receptive”. “We discussed the key to good leadership is communication, respect, and surrounding yourself with people that will challenge you to be your best,” he said. “Wanting to make a difference for the youth in our community is the reason I got into politics and being able to have honest conversations and share some of the lessons I have learned through my journey with students is always rewarding.” A representative of St Francis Xavier said Mr Battin’s visit covered preparation, the expectations and responsibilities of being a leader and the importance of serving the community.

Fasting together as one By Gabriella Payne People of all backgrounds and faiths came together on Saturday 17 April at the Pakenham Library to celebrate their differences and learn from one another, sharing stories and an Iftar dinner (breaking the fast meal) during this holy month of Ramadan. Organised by the Ahmadiyya Muslim Association, the afternoon was a great success and saw many multicultural leaders from across Cardinia take to the stage and share a bit about their own unique faith and culture. A spokesperson for the Ahmadiyya Muslim Association, Dr Tariq Butt, said that the event “went really well” and it was great to see

so many people in attendance and enjoying themselves. “Everyone had a great time - we chatted about different things, different faiths and how they experience fasting in their religion,” Dr Butt said. “It was a very informative session for everyone.” Dr Butt said that it was fantastic to have the chance to learn about other peoples’ cultures, and the association had received a lot of positive feedback from those who attended. “People really liked the effort that we put in to bring the different communities together,” he said. “Australia is transforming into a very multi-

It was the initiative that dished up smiles during lockdown, but now a decrepit looking Spoonville site in Pakenham is providing anything but joy. During the one hour exercise limit - which is now a distant memory - Spoonville sites across Cardinia Shire were the most popular place to visit. Despite the fad having died down entirely, the Cardinia Lakes community was understandably upset at news their local site appeared to have been targeted by cruel vandals. Estate resident Laksika noticed the destroyed site during her daily walk on Sunday 24 January. “I think someone has just walked over it or kicked them all over. It’s very sad to see it. We always used to stop there and have a look for new ones,” she wrote on Facebook. The reaction from her neighbours was similar. “Absolutely disgusting. The highlight of our walk is our toddler stopping to look and admire the spoons,” one local woman said. “That’s so disappointing. My kids had spoons in there,” another woman added. Pakenham Hills Ward councillor Jack Kowarzik said the news was “really frustrating”. “Spoonville was created by locals for the enjoyment of local children and to see it vandalised is disappointing,” he said. Cardinia Art Society president Jillian Ronald described Spoonville as an “amazing initiative” during Melbourne’s lengthy lockdown. “It’s given joy and positivity in some very dark times and I just think it’s really disappointing that, when the community put together a project to support each other during a difficult time, that someone would take the trouble to destroy it. They’d be better off going home to create a spoon and putting it with

The quirky saga soon made its way to Cardinia - after Australia’s first ever site was constructed up the highway in Longwarry. Within weeks, the site had spread to Pakenham, Officer, Garfield, Nar Nar Goon, Emerald and Beaconsfield.

Ms Ronald acknowledged the Spoonville craze had now hit a dead end. “They’re getting a little bit tired, so maybe it’s time for the spoons to come home,” she said. Ms Ronald, who commissioned the two local sites at Lakeside in Pakenham, encouraged community members to collect their spoons from their local sites. She added that in mid-February she’d look to clean up all remaining Spoonville’s and relocate any leftover spoons to an “undisclosed location”.

What is your secret talent or party trick? I can dance! What is your biggest motivation in life? I’m motivated by regret. That’s why I’ll continue to sweat. When I’m old and grey, maybe my knees don’t work no more, I want to be proud of the life I’ve lived and the things I’ve strived to achieve. I want to still do good in this world before my time comes. Leaving it better than I found it. What has been your most embarrassing moment? As part of our Year 10 camp, we got a chance to go to New Caledonia and on this particular day there was celebration and lots of food! After I got my food, I looked up to see that my group were already huddled up and I would have to be that guy that joins the group in mid conversation. I thought I will go to the group and chat to them while leaning on something because that’s what cool people do. But there was no nearby pole or tree. Only a dumb mini fridge ... Mid way through the conversation, I noticed the dumb mini fridge was sliding away slowly! I went to place my hand on the mini fridge, to my surprise the top was open so I ended up going in the fridge. Whole top half of my body went in. Feet up in the air. In front of everyone in the party. I just wanted to be the cool guy! What three words would your friends use to describe you? I hope my friends see me as motivational, hardworking and creative. What three CDs would you take to a desert island? What are CDs? Can I take my Spotify list instead? Or my laptop or portable charger? Is there free WiFi on this island? No? Then I’ll choose two books, ‘Survivors Handbook’ by Bear Grylls and ‘The Magic of Thinking Big’ by David J. Schwartz. I’ll turn the deserted island into a tourist attraction in no time!

Pop down to your local cenotaph or war memorial throughout the day to spend a quiet moment reflecting. Bring a flower or sprig of rosemary to lay at the memorial too if you wish. There are cenotaphs in Berwick, Beaconsfield and war memorials in Cranbourne and Narre Warren North, among other locations.

Drop into the RSL later in the day and enjoy the hospitality of the venue. You may find yourself in the company of a veteran enjoying his or her day too. Leave with a full belly and the knowledge that you’re supporting an organisation set up to help veterans and their families.

What has been the best day of your life so far? The best day so far has been the day I’ve discovered Earl Nightingale’s speech titled “The strangest secret in the world”. In his speech, he said “You become what you think about”. I was in year 9 when I first heard those words, so naturally, I didn’t think much of it. But somehow, I kept listen to that particular speech and by the grace of God, 6 years later, I’m a TEDx speaker, actor, project manager and marketer at Multicultural Youth Support Services. I’m represented by Platinum Speakers Australia, and Great Expectation Speakers and Trainers. I’m a student at AAFTA and Yonder Window Theatre company which is based in New York! With the ambitious goal of travelling to L.A to create more magic in the near future! I highly recommend that video! What is your proudest achievement? I can honestly say my greatest achievement to date is the day I made peace with God. Now, I don’t stress as much about anything as I know that he is in control! Also read Matthew 11:28! Great Bible passage! What would your last meal be? What budget do I have in this situation? Unlimited? If that’s the case, then I want to taste every dessert in the world. I might get really bad tooth cavity but it would be worth it I reckon! The main course will definitely be the word of God of course with a side of salad. FOCUS ON … ANZAC DAY

Local Anzac Day services Veterans and their families will pause to remember and reflect this Anzac Day at a number of memorial events across the region. After 2020’s Anzac Day was marred by Covid, this year local RSLs are looking forward to being able to mark the occasion in person- albeit in reduced numbers to adhere to ongoing Covid restrictions. Berwick RSL president Wayne A’Vard encouraged people to lay a wreath at the Berwick cenotaph in their own time after 11am as the club would not be holding a public event in the main street this year. Instead, there will be a 6am dawn service held at Bunjil Place in conjunction with Casey Council with restricted numbers. “I think we had wonderful support last year in the way that the public demonstrated their feelings for Anzac services,” Mr A’Vard said. “It is a very special occasion and the ceremony means a lot to not just veterans, but to the general public as well.” Pakenham RSL will not be holding a public ceremony this year because numbers are capped well below the usual number of attendees. President Terry McDonald said usually two or three thousand people attend the dawn service, well above the 700 cap. He said although it was disappointing, the club just didn’t have the means to host an event ensuring the reduced numbers were not exceeded. Anzac Day services will be held by the local RSL sub-branches across Cardinia on Sunday 25 April. Berwick A 6am dawn service will be held at Bunjil Place, in conjunction with Casey Council.

Cockatoo A 6am dawn service will kick the day off at the Cockatoo cenotaph, followed by a gunfire breakfast. A march will be held at 10.15am with the main service beginning after that at 10.30am. The afternoon will include a BBQ, Two-Up and live music. Emerald A dawn service will be held at the Emerald cenotaph at 5.15am. This will be a free event, however tickets need to be obtained in advance. For those who can’t make it, the service will be live-streamed on the RSL sub-branch’s Facebook, YouTube and website. Gembrook The cenotaph on Redwood Road in Gembrook will be the centre of two services, one at dawn at 5.45am and another at 11am. Gembrook and Emerald Football Clubs are playing an Anzac match on the Saturday. Kooweerup People of Kooweerup will assemble at the end of the Avenue of Honour on Rossiter Road at 5.45am to march up to the cenotaph for the beginning of the dawn service at 6am. Lang Lang A guest speaker from the navy will be the feature of Lang Lang’s dawn service at 5.30am with a gunfire breakfast to follow. Lang Lang and Catani will clash in a muchanticipated football match on the Saturday. Nar Nar Goon A dawn service at 6.00am will be held at the Nar Nar Goon cenotaph, with a guest speaker Terence Reeves who is an Afghanistan veteran and Nar Nar Goon RSL member.

Anzac race car gesture A Pakenham race car driver has made a unique show of support for veterans this Anzac Day. Andrew Anderson, who owns Pakenham Tyres and More, has displayed an Anzacthemed car bonnet on his Commodore VN SS Group A. The striking red poppy bonnet also includes a list of everyone who has received a Victoria Cross. “Hundreds of people come to the track and take photos. I don’t want them to forget,“ Anderson said. “It’s my way of commemorating Anzac Day.“ Anderson has been racing for over 30 years across the state and regularly attends meets at Sandown Park and Phillip Island. Stay local on Anzac Day The State Government has urged Victorians to “stay local” this year when it comes to honouring Australia’s servicemen and women on Anzac Day. The Victorian Government has worked with RSL Victoria to ensure veterans and their families could march this year, but encouraged Victorians to stay local on Anzac Day. Melbourne’s Anzac Day March can proceed with 5500 people, in line with an application submitted by the RSL and approved under Victoria’s Public Events Framework. The traditional Dawn Service and Commemorative Services will also be held with smaller numbers in partnership with the Shrine of Remembrance, and live streamed for all Victorians to watch at: facebook.com/ rslvic. Victorians are once again asked to share their show of remembrance from home by taking part in #lightupthedawn on social media while observing the traditional minute’s pakenhamnews.starcommunity.com.au

Zippy Zack’s dream run It was without a doubt a dream weekend for Jam Jerrup’s Zack Johnson at last weekend’s third round of the mi-bike Motorcycle Insurance Australian Superbike Championship (ASBK). Johnson entered the Wakefield Park round optimistic of scoring good results, but he openly admitted that he certainly wasn’t expecting to finish on the overall podium. The 21-year-old started the weekend off by setting the second fastest lap time in the combined practice times on Friday, with a 1:05.588 which he posted in free practice three. Johnson explained that he was able to push hard from the get go, thanks to the bike setup being in the ‘window’, which allowed him to focus on lap times, rather than chasing a setup, like he had to do at Winton Motor Raceway in March. Saturday’s sunshine brought ideal conditions as Johnson navigated the Johnson Racing Team Kawasaki Ninja 400 around the 2.2km circuit to secure his first Australian Supersport 300 Championship front row start of his career, by qualifying with the third fastest time with a 1:06.263. “I’m very happy with how qualifying went,” said Johnson. “We will make a few more changes to the bike, which should make it even better for race conditions. I just have to make sure I get a good start off the line in the three races. “If I can do that, I’m sure we will be there or thereabouts,” he added. Race one on Saturday afternoon saw Johnson getting a shocking start off the line. He was first involved in an aggressive contest for second spot, having made his way from sixth to second in three laps. Johnson put his head down with a handful of laps remaining to finish in second place, 4.503sec ahead of Reece Oughted. “My start was not the best, which made it

Race two went more according to plan with Johnson managing to get a good start. After battling with Angus Grenfell for the first part of the 10-lap race, Johnson was able

to pull clear in the closing stages. For the third and final race on Sunday, Johnson again got a decent start but didn’t get into turn one in the best position. But he was able to pick off his competitors one-by-one throughout the race and managed to race into second place by lap two, where he stayed for the duration. With a 2-2-2 result, it handed Johnson second place for the weekend – his best result thus far in the Australian Supersport 300 Championship. Thanks to the results, Johnson climbs to second in the overall standings, 35-points behind the championship leader. “I’m stoked to come away with three seconds places,” expressed Johnson. “I definitely wasn’t expecting to be up in the top three this weekend, and I certainly wasn’t expecting to finish second overall. “I have to thank my crew chief, Chris Edmunds, from Lynchy’s Garage, who just worked his magic this weekend with the Bitubo suspension. We were able to start the weekend off on the right foot as he got our bike settings down pat, which is a huge credit to him. “This allowed me to focus on my race craft and putting in fast lap times, rather than chasing bike setup. It just made the rest of the weekend so easy, which is exactly what you want. “On top of that I have to thank all of our other team sponsors who are making this year possible. Crash and Bash at Drouin Crash and Bash fans filled Drouin Speedway on Sunday and were entertained by crashes, spins, wheels flying from race cars and Adrian Brown and Lea Judd victories. Other stars of the show were Jack Yeomans – who won two finals in Junior Standards - and Jeff Blencowe and Rebecca Glassborow who also earnt chequered flags. The Crash and Bash Association and Drouin Speedway put on a special event in memory of Teahn Murrell, a long-time supporter of the Crash and Bash and a regular fan at the track. A minute silence was held in tribute. Crash and Bash Opens was an all-male event and six qualifying races were held to get to the feature race. Jackson Barneveld, Jason Judd, Time Cole, Anthony Sgroi, and Anthony Segond won the vents that contained some hard hits and crashes. The 30-lap final was a beauty. Jason Judd led on lap one until he had damage, and from lap seven Craig McKendry took command. Adrian Brown then took over from lap 11 before Sgroi passed him on lap 14. Brown reclaimed the lead and took an emotional win from Alan George, Jay Miles, Ian Lamb and Chris Miles two laps behind in fifth. “I am retiring from Crash and Bash at the end of this season and just focusing on my darling wife, the kids and the other racing I am involved with,” Brown said after the win. “To win before I retire, not only for me but for all their love and support is just a dream come true. “It’s not until you win a race that you appreciate how hard it is to do, just once, never mind consistently. Warriors wind things up By David Nagel The Pakenham Warriors have recovered from a deplorably slow start to score an important 70-56 road-trip victory over Bellarine in Big V Division One Women’s basketball. The Warriors left their intensity on the team bus, with the Storm ravaging the visitors with a 20-8 first quarter onslaught, before the Warriors returned fire to move to fourth place on the league table. The experience of Sarah Slater proved invaluable for the Warriors, with her 18-point, 10-rebound double-double providing the platform for recovery and then victory. Slater received great support from Keeley Patterson, who scored a gamehigh 22 points to go with six defensive rebounds. The Warriors cut a 12-point deficit at the end of the first period back to just two at the half, before lighting things up with 48-32 second half. Instigator steals the show By David Nagel The Pakenham Racing Club played host to one of the signature days on its racing calendar on Sunday with the running of the Ecycle Solutions Super Jumps Raceday. The feature event on the eight-race card was the time-honoured $50,000 MJ Bourke Hurdle (3200m), the club’s premier hurdle race of the season first run in 1957. The race is named in honour of Michael Joseph Bourke, who with his brother Hugh originally provided, and later sold to the Pakenham Race Club, the land on which the original course on Racecourse Road was built. In 1926, Michael Bourke was instrumental in the reconstruction of the racecourse, as well as providing the necessary finance. He was the secretary of the Pakenham Racing Club from 1926 until ill health forced his retirement in 1949, at which time his son, David Bourke, took over the position of secretary at age 18. The Bourke family has had long ties with racing and Pakenham, and it is this legacy that has played a pivotal role in the club’s efforts to thrive and head into the future. The PRC also remembered another club great with the running of the $50,000 Jeff Spencer Memorial Steeplechase (3200m). The hybrid race-day featured five races on turf - over the flights - before switching to the synthetic for three 0-58 Handicaps to round out the card. The MJ Bourke Hurdle may provide an important stepping stone for the Aaron Purcelltrained Instigator, who trounced his rivals by seven lengths to record just his second win at start 32. The former German galloper transferred to the Purcell yard after having his last start in his homeland at Hamburg in July,2018. Pakenham trainer Jason Bridgman had a night to remember at Cranbourne on Friday night with his six-year-old gelding Moski taking out the lucrative $25,000 Victorian Picnic Grand Final (1600m). Moski, who started life as a sprinter, trounced his rivals over the Cranbourne mile to remain undefeated at his last three outings. The son of Uncle Mo/Gonski Girl won at Balnarring over the 1200 and 1050-metre trips before stepping out the mile on Friday.

Jockey Jack Virgona gave Moski a perfect run in transit, with the pair racing away to win by three lengths, giving the $3.80 shot the biggest pay cheque of his 37-start career. And Phillip Stokes rounded out a great night for Pakenham trainers at Cranbourne when his promising three-year-old Turquoise Hope improved his record to three wins from eight starts by claiming the last race on the card. Turquoise Hope, who had wins at Ararat and Benalla in December last year, relished his first step up to 1300 metres to score by just over a length on the line. Racing returns to Pakenham this Thursday night, April 22.
