Like the Grinch who stole Christmas, a man masquerading as a delivery driver has taken off with a car-full of nicked parcels from Grandvue Estate in Pakenham. Multiple CCTV videos show a man pulling into driveways on Tuesday 6 April to pinch packages that had been left only minutes before. Pakenham Senior Sergeant Amanda Douglas said police had received six reports from residents of the estate but hoped other victims of the thefts would continue to come forward. “It’s an ongoing opportunistic theft trend across the state,” she said. “The main message is to prevent this happening - suggest parcels be hidden in a meter box or behind a gate. “People walking up to front doors isn’t uncommon so if a neighbour saw it they wouldn’t have thought it was suspect.” One resident, who wished to remain anonymous, said she was alerted to the thefts by multiple posts on the Grandvue Residents Group (Pakenham/Officer, Vic) Facebook page. “Everyone watches out for everyone on the page,” she said. She had hand-delivered a baby bundle for a friend three doors down and said she was saddened to learn it had been stolen by the unknown offender. The man had even pulled into her own driveway to look to see if there was a parcel he could take. “It’s creepy,” she said. “We’re at the back of the estate so he had done the rest of it already. “You can see in the video the front seat piled with parcels.” She said based on the other CCTV shared to the Facebook page, the man was wearing a high-vis jacket which helped him appear as just another delivery driver. “If you saw him you’d think nothing of it,” she said. “He’s a pro, he’s clearly done it before.”

Crophouse relapse By Cam Lucadou-Wells A relapsed ex-drug addict oversaw a Pakenham growhouse after financial pressures during the Covid-19 pandemic, the Victorian County Court has heard. Hung Van Nguyen, 43, from Keysborough, pleaded guilty to cultivating a commercial crop of 172 cannabis plants at a home in Greenway Drive Pakenham. He also pleaded guilty to possessing suspected proceeds of crime in $17,620 cash in his pants and his car’s glovebox. As part of Operation Sapphire, police discovered Nguyen at the “sophisticated” hydroponic set-up during a pre-dawn raid on 3 September 2020. They seized 163 kilograms of plants with a further 8.5 kilos of cannabis found in cocopeat bags and 2.5 kilos mixed with unidentifiable plant matter. Nguyen was in the front room with an inflatable mattress, hydroponic-light heat shields, and a light timer to give the appearance that the home was occupied. The “virtually unhabitable” house had a large hole in the wall for an electrical bypass into the mains power supply, and another hole for access to the garage. Temporary walls were installed to create extra grow rooms. In sentencing, Judge Howard Mason noted Nguyen’s “subjectively very serious” offending. The grow house was capable of producing “significant” quantities of cannabis. There was no evidence Nguyen established the operation but he played an important role by his presence, including crop maintenance. Judge Mason noted Nguyen’s “extensive”

Highway drug driver caught A 33-year-old Pakenham man has been caught driving on a disqualified licence after a previous conviction for drug driving. The man was pulled over by Cardinia Highway Patrol around midday on Saturday 4 April on the Princes Highway in Pakenham. The driver was also subject to an alcohol interlock condition as a result of being caught drink driving in the past. He was found to be breaching the condition by not having an interlock fitted in the vehicle. The man recorded an alleged breath alcohol reading of 0.025 and also returned a positive drug test result for both cannabis and methylamphetamine. His ute was impounded for 30 days at a cost of $895 and the driver will be attending court at a later date.

Learner driver learns his lesson criminal record connected to his drug addiction between 1997 and 2008. Before his recent “unfortunate relapse”, Nguyen had been offence free for 12 years. He had had “commendable success” overcoming his addiction. He worked long hours as a delivery driver, supporting and caring for his partner and four children. Nguyen’s relapse coincided with a family bereavement and financial pressure during Covid-19. He’d lost overtime hours, his job was under threat and his health deteriorated, Judge Mason noted. In a reference, his employer stated the charges were “out of character” for the “trustworthy” and “hard-working” worker. Judge Mason noted Nguyen faced mandatory jail for commercial cultivation. He jailed Nguyen for up to three-and-a-half

years, including 209 days in pre-sentence remand. He will be eligible for parole after two years. Nguyen and two other men were charged after police raids on four properties in Noble Park, Pakenham, Springvale and Springvale South on 3 September. One of the co-accused Duy Khanh Phuong, 31, faced Melbourne Magistrates’ Court at a committal mention hearing on 1 April in relation to three alleged properties. Pending DNA analysis, Phuong faced charges of cultivating and trafficking a commercial amount of cannabis in Pakenham and Springvale South. He was also charged with growing cannabis at Noble Park, possessing suspected proceeds of crime and three counts of stealing electricity. Phuong was remanded in custody until a further committal mention on 25 May.

A learner driver who was on a suspended licence and driving without a supervising driver has been caught by police in Pakenham on Friday 2 April. Cardinia Highway Patrol intercepted the BMW on the Princes Freeway, Pakenham at 2.50pm. The 21-year-old man from Cranbourne had his vehicle impounded for 30 days at a cost of $1280 and will be required to go to court.

Henty Street speedster nabbed A 23-year-old Parkdale man was caught driving 54km/h over the speed limit on Henty Street, Pakenham. Police nabbed the man, who was driving a red Ford XR6 travelling at at 104km/h in the 50km/h zone around 7.15pm on Friday 2 April. The driver underwent a roadside drug test and allegedly returned a positive result to Methylamphetamine. Due to the excessive speed the man’s vehicle was immediately impounded at a cost of $1280 and he was arrested for unrelated matters where he was charged and bailed to attend court.

Sex attack kill threat Detectives from the Dandenong sexual offences and child abuse investigation team are appealing for anyone with information to come forward and help in their search for an unknown assailant, who sexually assaulted and threatened to kill a woman in Pakenham. The victim, a 60-year-old woman, was taking an early morning walk at about 6.30am on Tuesday 2 March along a footpath just off Toomuc Valley Road in Pakenham when the attack occurred. As the woman was walking, she was approached by an unknown man on a bicycle, who asked her for the time. When she pulled out her mobile phone to check the time, the man grabbed her by the neck and forced her to the ground. He then sat on her and pinned her to the ground by her neck, while he sexually assaulted her and demanded the password for her phone. The victim tried to call for help, but the man threatened to kill her. She was only released when the man was

interrupted by a passing car, causing him to flee on foot with her phone and credit card. The woman managed to flag down a passer-by for help shortly after, and was not physically injured in the attack. The male offender is described as being of Caucasian appearance, between 18-30 years old, 160-170 cms tall and was wearing a black mask, black cap and black jacket with the hood pulled up. The bicycle he was riding at the time had a blue cross bar and a blue/white frame. Detectives have released CCTV images of a male they believe may be able to assist them with their enquiries. Name it: ‘We want you-th’ By Gabriella Payne With the new, state-of-the-art Pakenham youth centre on the horizon, the Cardinia Shire Council are calling on the region’s young people to get involved in local matters and have their say in a new online survey, aimed at meeting the needs of young people across Cardinia. Young people aged between 12 and 24 years of age who either “live, work, study or play” in Cardinia are being encouraged to share their thoughts and ideas with the Council, so that they can better cater to young people’s needs and aspirations as the area continues to grow. Open until Friday 7 May, mayor Brett Owen said that it was a fantastic way for young people to get their voices heard and make an impact in the area. “We want to hear about what is important to you as a young person in Cardinia Shire,” Cr Owen said. “This information is important for us at the council as it helps us plan services, advocate for and support young people.” On top of this, the Cardinia Shire Council are also encouraging young people to make suggestions for the name of the new mega youth centre currently being built in Pakenham. Cr Owen made a special stop in at Pakenham’s current youth centre, MyPlace, on Thursday 1 April and spoke with some of the staff and patrons there about what this new centre would mean for the community. Kat Scott and Kaylie Pert, the youth engagement officer and youth services officer at MyPlace both agreed that the new three storey facility would be amazing for many reasons. “I think the new centre is going to be a lot more accessible for a lot of people,” Ms Scott said. “We’re going to have a recording booth in

Two nabbed after robbery Two knife-wielding men have been charged by police following a series of thefts in Pakenham on Wednesday 31 March. The men are alleged to have attempted to steal a parked car from the driveway of an Arlington Avenue home at around 6.30am on Wednesday morning, but were unsuccessful as they were disturbed by the homeowners. One of the men produced a knife and point-

ed it at the homeowners before they both fled on foot. Having been notified of the attempted burglary, police arrived at the scene quickly and arrested one of the men as he was attempting to get away on a motorbike on Armidale Drive. The second man fled on a stolen motorised bicycle, but was arrested shortly after

Cheeky hunt for regional dunnies Now that state borders are open, the Easter and school holidays are upon us and Aussies are hitting the road in droves, the Continence Foundation of Australia is asking for help to hunt down Australia’s regional public toilets. The foundation is asking those who are out and about across the regions, whether on family holidays, road trips, weekends away or those who just want to help people out, to register the location of regional public toilets on The National Public Toilet Map through www. toiletmap.gov.au or on the app, available on Google Play or the App store. The National Public Toilet Map means there is no need to get stuck without a loo while you are travelling or out and about, and everyone who submits a regional public toilet location to the map has a chance to win one of three $500 Eftpos vouchers. While this is a cheeky campaign to build up The National Public Toilet Map, the underlying purpose is to support the millions of Australians living with continence related issues by providing them with a real time, reliable map of public toilets across the country. The National Public Toilet Map, which lists over 19,000 toilets, gives people the confidence to go about their lives, feeling supported. “The fear of not having access to toilets in public can restrict, and even stop, people from leaving their home for everyday activities,” Rowan Cockerell, CEO of the Continence Foundation of Australia, says. People living with a variety of health conditions, expectant or new mothers and the elderly can all be living with incontinence but the toilet map is also an asset to families with young children, grey nomads and day trippers alike. Dog attack horror By Danielle Kutchel A Narre Warren woman was forced to watch in horror as her dogs were attacked by a neighbour’s dog in her own house. Stephanie Korosa’s 14-year-old cavalier and four-year-old mastiff were allegedly attacked by her neighbour’s American staffy while she was out of the house. Ms Korosa said she had left her dogs asleep on her bed while she did the school run on Monday 29 March. She said when she arrived home, she knew something was wrong when she heard the dogs barking. Entering her house, she said she saw the neighbour’s dog in her room, tossing her dogs around. “I yelled for help. This went on for 25 minutes. It was agonising,” she said. “[My neighbour] walked in with a broom. I was screaming and trying to break it up. “It was tossing my dog around like a ragdoll,

it was like a crocodile with prey.” Even with the two of them there, Ms Korosa said they couldn’t break the dog’s hold. She alleged it had smashed through her fence palings and gotten into the house through her back sliding door. “It’s my worst nightmare,” she said. She was in contact with neighbours immediately after the attack but hasn’t heard from them since. She said the neighbour has not offered to assist with vet bills or take responsibility for the attack. Meanwhile, Ms Korosa’s vet bill has hit more than $2000. After the attack, she contacted the council - and was stunned by their response. After being assured the neighbour’s dog would be seized, she said the council told her that would not happen and no action would be taken. “All of a sudden there’s no case, because they can’t determine who bit who first,” she said.

“I’m so frustrated.” Ms Korosa said her own dogs are still in pain and suffering from anxiety, and she is considering her legal options. “It’s not about the money, it’s not about the vet bills, it’s the principles and the morals,” she said. “Take responsibility, take ownership, be empathetic.” Daniel Osborne, manager safer communities at the City of Casey, said the alleged incident was being investigated. “All dog attack investigations are completed within the framework set out under Sec 29 of the Domestic Animals Act 1994. As there were no witnesses to the incident, Council has been unable to take further action,” he said, asking anyone with information to contact the City of Casey on 9705 5200. The RSPCA confirmed the alleged attack does not fall under its jurisdiction as it is responsible for investigating acts of cruelty by people towards animals.

It was the initiative that dished up smiles during lockdown, but now a decrepit looking Spoonville site in Pakenham is providing anything but joy. During the one hour exercise limit - which is now a distant memory - Spoonville sites across Cardinia Shire were the most popular place to visit. Despite the fad having died down entirely, the Cardinia Lakes community was understandably upset at news their local site appeared to have been targeted by cruel vandals. Estate resident Laksika noticed the destroyed site during her daily walk on Sunday 24 January. “I think someone has just walked over it or kicked them all over. It’s very sad to see it. We always used to stop there and have a look for new ones,” she wrote on Facebook. The reaction from her neighbours was similar. “Absolutely disgusting. The highlight of our walk is our toddler stopping to look and admire the spoons,” one local woman said. “That’s so disappointing. My kids had spoons in there,” another woman added. Pakenham Hills Ward councillor Jack Kowarzik said the news was “really frustrating”. “Spoonville was created by locals for the enjoyment of local children and to see it vandalised is disappointing,” he said. Cardinia Art Society president Jillian Ronald described Spoonville as an “amazing initiative” during Melbourne’s lengthy lockdown. “It’s given joy and positivity in some very dark times and I just think it’s really disappointing that, when the community put together a project to support each other during a difficult time, that someone would take the trouble to destroy it. They’d be better off going home to create a spoon and putting it with

The quirky saga soon made its way to Cardinia - after Australia’s first ever site was constructed up the highway in Longwarry. Within weeks, the site had spread to Pakenham, Officer, Garfield, Nar Nar Goon, Emerald and Beaconsfield.

Ms Ronald acknowledged the Spoonville craze had now hit a dead end. “They’re getting a little bit tired, so maybe it’s time for the spoons to come home,” she said. Ms Ronald, who commissioned the two local sites at Lakeside in Pakenham, encouraged community members to collect their spoons from their local sites. She added that in mid-February she’d look to clean up all remaining Spoonville’s and relocate any leftover spoons to an “undisclosed location”.

Grants spark creativity By Gabriella Payne Last year’s lockdowns had a huge impact on artists of all kinds, but a new grant program run by the Cardinia Shire Council is set to give artists the spark they need to get their creative juices flowing once again. Local artists and art groups are being encouraged to apply for the ‘arts and culture small change grant’ for 2021, which will help provide the successful candidates with a financial boost to help kick start the arts in Cardinia this year. The grant provides financial assistance to artists and art groups to the maximum amount of $1,000, for initiatives that “utilise, expand and promote the arts” within the Cardinia Shire. A previous recipient of the grant, the Ignite Youth Festival, is one example of the many great artistic projects that the money goes towards funding.

Held in the hills, the Ignite Youth Festival is a music concert which was designed to help emerging artists and singer-songwriters be part of a free, all ages event where they can share their own talents and collaborate with one another. So be it music, painting, acting, dancing or anything in between - every artist in the region is encouraged to apply for the ‘arts and culture small change grant’ this year. Applications opened in mid-March and will be closing on Monday 12 April at 5pm - so get on it quickly! Sudanese youth support A popular community support group (CSG) for South Sudanese young people has been expanded into Cardinia by the Centre for Multicultural Youth, following its huge success in both Dandenong and Casey. The CSG was officially launched at an event at Pakenham’s Living and Learning Centre on Saturday 27 March, and was attended by many community leaders and eager supporters of the program. Kenyatta Dei Wal, the project coordinator for the CSG in Dandenong, Casey and Cardinia, said that he was thrilled to see the program expand and it was wonderful to be welcomed into the Cardinia Shire. “The launch was fabulous and fantastic,” Mr Dei Wal said. “When people heard that there was an event of such magnitude and also that the service itself - which is focusing on young South Sudanese people and their families - is coming to them, they were just so excited and they were happy to be a part of it,” he said. Since its inception in 2018, the support group has helped many young people from the South Sudanese community find their feet and reach their potential, and hopes to do the same here in the Cardinia Shire. “We have realised that - and also as per our data, that many people are moving out from Casey and Dandenong to Cardinia,” Mr Dei Wal said.

“So we want to bring the services to them, but also more importantly, we want to engage young people.” Mr Dei Wal said that the CSG offered many different services to youth and their families in the area, including youth leadership programs, homework clubs, family support packages, sport and recreation activities and employment pathways to name a few. As each individual has their own unique challenges, Mr Dei Wal said that the CSG’s “services vary as per the need of the person” and each program would be individually customised to best suit that particular individual. “Our research has shown that the more we keep young people engaged, particularly at schools, the likelihood of them getting into trouble or involved in antisocial behaviour is much less - and therefore, that’s what we intend to do,” Mr Dei Wal said. With a new space allocated for this CSG at the state-of-the-art youth centre currently being built in Pakenham, Mr Dei Wal said he was excited to welcome South Sudanese young people to the program and hoped to help as many young people and their families as possible. “Everyone from the South Sudanese community is welcome, but if there are also people in the wider Cardinia community who want to volunteer and provide support to the South Sudanese community, please reach out to the CSG too,” he said.

Hot cross fun for Easter By Gabriella Payne Residents at the Evergreen Retirement Village in Pakenham enjoyed a lovely morning filled with hot cross buns, chocolates, cups of tea and plenty of great conversation when local Member for Bass, Jordan Curgnale MP, hopped by for an Easter morning tea on Tuesday 30 March. After a difficult year last year, the senior residents and staff at Evergreen were thrilled to welcome Ms Crugnale on Tuesday as things slowly get back to a sense of normality, and everyone had a great time getting into the Easter spirit. Sharyn Allsop, the assistant manager at Evergreen Retirement Village, said that it was a “beautiful” day and the residents had loved chatting with Ms Crugnale over a cuppa and an Easter treat. “It was such a privilege for Jordan to come down and spend some time and acknowledge us, it was just so beautiful,” Ms Allsop said. “And to bring hot cross buns and Easter eggs was such a beautiful gesture on their behalf, we all had a great time.” Ms Allsop said that about 30 residents came along to the morning tea, and it was wonderful to see them socialising and having a great time with one another - especially after last year’s lockdowns. “The residents have just suffered so badly with their mental health over the past year, so

this was just a great chance to have a bit of fun, a good laugh, and to get together again,” she said. Related to the above quote in many ways, this refers to the need to properly define the various steps, activities, staff, milestones and key activities required to achieve a particular outcome. The key here is that this stuff needs to be written down so that it can be shared and referred to on a regular basis. I frequently encounter businesses that say they have a plan, but if it is not documented and published, it doesn’t actually exist. “If you don’t know what you stand for, you will fall for anything” (Alexander Hamilton, one of the Founding Fathers of the USA). One of the reasons I particularly like this quote is that it gets to the heart of why company culture in a business is so important. Like it or not, every business has a culture, but defining precisely what you would like this to be and then working towards it will speak volumes about the nature of your business and why people should want to engage with you. A well-defined company culture can be used to attract the right staff, set expectations of behaviour of those within it, be used as the basis for expressing your value proposition through your website and other marketing material and finally defining those key differentiators that separate you from the rest. Posters were also hung around the office at the registered NDIS provider. Managing director Ravi Bhatt said a common misconception was that disabled people couldn’t also have diverse sexual orientations and gender identities.

“We have clients who are on the Autism spectrum and identify as transgender,“ he said. Senior support coordinator Amanda Dalton said she hoped people with disabilities and diverse gender identities knew Sunrise2Sunrise was a safe service to come to for support. “People should be treated as people,“ she said.

I’ll make no secret of it, I love quotes. A simple one-liner can often succinctly convey more than entire paragraphs of text and effectively apply to a range of different situations. As such, I frequently use these as an integral part of some of my presentations or when doing business coaching. Here are five of my favourites (four of them come from the US): ”Action Expresses Priorities” (Ghandi). How often do your staff come to you and tell you that they were unable to complete a task because they ‘did not have time’? In reality, assuming that the impossible had not been requested, this is never actually true and so the resultant action(s) indicate an individual’s priorities. What has typically happened is that other “priorities” have occurred which can prevent the agreed task being accomplished. The best way to address this is to agree up front that should anything arise that might jeopardise the end result, these be discussed as and when they occur. ”People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care’ (Theodore Roosevelt). Obvious when you think about it, but would you rather work with someone who genuinely cares about getting a result for you but may not be an expert in the space, or someone who is an expert, but is not particularly bothered about the outcome? People who really care will do whatever it takes to achieve an objective and will learn what needs to be known in order to accomplish it. “Give me six hours to chop down a tree and I will spend the first four sharpening the axe” (Abraham Lincoln). In America the term “sharpening the saw” (derived from this quote) means taking the time to improve the process. This insightful quote reminds us to think carefully before embarking on a significant task to make sure that we have the right tools and mindset before we start. Rushing in before being properly prepared never gives as good a result of as will properly considering

What was the best day of your life so far? I have been fortunate to have six children, three I gave birth to and three I acquired through marriage. I can’t differentiate so I have to say the birthday of each of my daughters. (Besides when they read the paper, they’ll be furious if I don’t include them all!) What is your proudest achievement? Given the honour of representing Cranbourne, especially as the first woman in the role. What would your last meal be? I love food, all food. It would be a bowl of steaming, pan fried dumplings. What do you love most about your role as an MP? Representing the people of Cranbourne is the best job in the world but visiting the amazing schools is the highlight. The children in our community are sparkling and I find schools to represent the optimism of our Cranbourne in its purest form. What event past, present or future would you like to witness and why? I would love to witness the falling of the Berlin Wall. Just writing about this brings me to tears. Imagine all those families that had been separated meeting again after all that time. What is your favourite TV show? Derry Girls Which six guests, dead or alive, would you like to invite to dinner? Barack Obama, Bruce Springsteen, my father (lots of things I want to ask him), Pope Francis, Gough Whitlam and Emmeline Pankhurst. What has been your most embarrassing moment? There are so many, I often fall and stumble into wrong rooms. I was asked to speak at the launch of the Labor campaign in 2018 and was quite nervous. As I walked on stage I took a mouthful of water but accidentally poured

Perfect Cup win for Butt By Kyle Galley Four-year-old pacer Perfect Stride produced a track record breaking performance in winning Easter Sunday’s $35,000 The Downtowner Warragul Pacing Bowl Cup. Driven by talented young reinsman Zac Phillips for Melton trainers Anthony Butt and Sonya Smith, Perfect Stride was patiently driven, settling at the rear of the nine horse field from the start of the 2627 metre event. Phillips moved his horse three wide on the track heading into the final lap, before a sweeping run up to the lead horses on the home turn. Perfect Stride overhauled the race leader Fourbigmen in the closing stages to score a three metre victory. Majestic Cruiser also made good late ground to run second with Fourbigmen holding third spot at the finish. The winning mile rate took half a second off the track record set in the 2016 Cup race, courtesy of a solid tempo set throughout. Perfect Stride won the Cobram Pacing Cup earlier this year, and now boasts a record of 13 wins and 14 minor placings from only 38 starts for owners the Stride family, and looks set to continue his rich vein of form in coming starts. Not long after their Warragul win, Perfect Stride’s and trainers landed a second feature race win, when Wolf Stride won the $100,000 Riverina Championship Final at Wagga, to cap a big day for all concerned. Elsewhere on the Cup program there were small fields in most events but still some entertaining racing. The Eddie Evison Memorial Trotters drew plenty of attention, with Stress Factor taking out the handicap race for trainer Brent Lilley and driver Daryl Douglas, in his return visit to Logan Park since making a comeback to race driving. Douglas has now driven the winner of the Gippsland trotting feature three times, with his other pair of winners, Homer Hawk and Our First Jewel, being among the top trotters of their time. Stress Factor collected the feature trot at Echuca at its previous run, and may continue to work towards being compared to those other two trotters - the six-year-old has now won 13 times from only 43 starts. Douglas wore the club’s colours of white with the blue W, normally a bad omen for the wearer if you believe the old racetrack talk. However this set of silks were also sported by the winner of the first race of the day, Bonnie Belle, for driver Greg Sugars and trainer Alan McDonough. Eleven-year-old gelding Wonderforce won

Young local reinsman Kyal Costello steered the Ahmed Taiba trained pacer Major Mal to a nice win in the third event, while Cranbourne horseman Scot Ewen won the Trotters Handicap with Trouble Giero. Reinswoman Taylor Ford landed her first winner at Logan Park with The Chancer in the sixth event for trainer Jodi Quinlan. One lucky punter left the course with a broad grin after Croydon trained pacer Lotakevi scored an upset win in the last race of the day. Lotakevi gave reinsman Daryl Douglas a winning double, and the lucky punter, who had his name drawn out of the barrel for a $10 TAB betting ticket, managed to turn his free flutter “on the nose” on Lotakevi into a return

of just over $1000. The nine-year-old pacer scored at odds of 100/1...and for the sake of the punter in question the horse picked the right day to score just his third career win at start 85! Warragul Harness Racing Club officials were pleased to welcome back a crowd to the racetrack for the first time in over 12 months. Though numbers are down on traditional crowd sizes as the racing industry eases its way back to how things used to be, there was a still a good atmosphere trackside on Sunday. Patrons were impressed with upgraded spectator facilities at Logan Park, which now sees Warragul offer one of the most comfortable places to watch the racing action, certainly as far as the smaller trotting tracks in Victoria are concerned. Racing returns to Warragul on Monday afternoon, May 24th.

Two Victorian titles up for grabs at Nyora Raceway By Dean Thompson Nyora Raceway will give fans not one, but two Victorian titles on the same night this Saturday. The Victorian title race for Speedway Sedans - Victoria Junior Sedan competitors in up to 1500cc engine powered race cars whilst the Victorian Speedway Council Sports Sedans will also compete for their state title on the same night. Also for the first time in years, the Formula 500s are appearing at the ‘Bullring’ for adults and juniors and the event is also supported by the Ladies Standard Saloons. The best of the best in Victorian Junior Sedan racing will line-up in the Speedway Sedans Victorian Junior title with many of the cars that have already been competing at the track among those to watch out for. Carter Metcalfe from Mildura is coming to Nyora for the first time, and so far on results he has been one of only two drivers matching it with winning drivers such as Jayden Bryant and Linken Paterson, the other being Jaxson Vella another who is also in the field. In the Sports Sedan title race Victorian champion and Nyora member Jamie Paull leads the nominations. The line-up is a cracker and we could pencil in half the field for a potential win with all things going right for them. Some of the drivers to watch though include Officer’s Dale Morrison, Pakenham’s Damien Miller a former champion, Ricky Cornwall, Warrick Taylor from Cranbourne, Tristan McGraw, David Donegan, Lee Beach from Ferntree Gully and Andrew Jordan. Nyora has a great number of competitors in the class all looking for a home track advantage and a top result. Speedy Zack hits track By Russell Colvin Jam Jerrup’s Zack Johnson will back on track again in just over a weeks’ time for the third round of the mi-bike Motorcycle Insurance Australian Superbike Championship (ASBK), which heads to Wakefield Park on the outskirts of Goulburn in New South Wales. Johnson was more than happy with his points haul after a less than straightforward run to sixth place overall in the opening round of the Australian Supersport 300 Championship, which took place at Winton Motor Raceway last month. Scoring a 9-5-8 result, Johnson heads into this weekend more than confident of being able to replicate his results again. “After the weekend we had in Winton it has given the Johnson Racing Team and I a big boost heading into Wakefield Park, and for the rest of the 2021 season as well,” said the 21-year-old, who is just 13 points away from third place in the championship and a further 35 points off the championship lead. “We went into Winton with a goal of finishing inside the top 10 overall, so to be sitting in sixth place in the championship, and as the highest placed Kawasaki rider, it just makes me even more confident,” added Johnson. Overall, Johnson has had a total of five race starts at Wakefield Park, two of them in the 2018 Australian Supersport Championship, and the other three in the 2017 Australian Supersport 300 Championship, which saw him finishing with an 8-6-8 result. Johnson says the 2.2km rural circuit is simple in design, but is a really fun track to race on. “It’s a track with not many fast corners, so you can normally make some moves which makes the racing quite competitive and good to watch,” Johnson explained. “It’s also forgiving if you don’t qualify well – it’s not the end of the world if you start the race towards the back of the grid as you can always make up positions under brakes into turn two,

What makes Johnson even more eager for the upcoming ASBK round, and hopeful of possibly even better results, is the fact he will have his ‘crew chief’, Chris Edmunds from Lynchy’s Garage trackside for the first time this year at a race meeting. “Chris was not at Winton but he was able to guide us in the right direction in terms of bike and suspension setup,” Johnson said. “That made a huge difference over the

weekend, which is a credit to him. So, to have Chris at the round itself will no doubt make the progression a lot easier and be able to hit the ground running to focus on a good race setup. “On top of that, we have been doing a lot of added work to the Bitubo suspension which will help with lap times for sure.” Johnson’s goals for round three are pretty straight forward – to finish within the top five and keep chipping away at a possible third place finish overall in this year’s championship.

Picture: RUSSELL COLVIN “Now that we know what we can do as a team, I have set a target of at least finishing inside the top five overall for each round, if not a top three finish,” he said. “It’s a long year, so we don’t want to get to carried away and go chucking the bike down the road in races. The main thing we have to do is finish every race. If we can do that, we should be a in good position come the end of the year.” The third round of the Australian Superbike Championship is scheduled for 16-18 April.

A war on wheels at Drouin Drouin Speedway will host the crazy racers from the Crash and Bash Association this Sunday in what will be an action-packed event for the expected big crowd in attendance. Racers will try to inflict damage on each other as they try to get to the finish line first and ensure everybody else does not. Over 25 competitors will do battle in the open class Crash and Bash – a war on wheels -including the Sgroi brothers, the George family, the Leeson brothers, Rob Disher, the Miles family, Jason Judd, Richard Lewandowski, Craig McKendry, and the dastardly best mates Andrew Corlett and James Kane. It is always difficult to choose a winner in the class as almost anything goes, however one thing is for sure, the driver who is the smartest tactically will come out on top. Expect cars to hit tyres, concrete, each other - and let’s just hope they avoid the ambulance! The Crash and Bash girls will also be at it on ‘Drive for Yarnie’ race day with Lea Judd - who recently won at Daylesford - the favourite going into Sunday. The likes of Sarah Price, Kath George, and Bianca Brown will be keen to take victory away from her this time around. The Junior Standard Saloon competitors will be back to finish off their feature event final from the previous race meeting in the Junior Jam. After that is over they will compete in Sun-

day’s racing with the likes of Jack Yeomans, Harry and Owen Cecil, Nathan and Maddison Miles, Cody Drennan and Hunter Carey all competing. Harry Cecil is on pole position for the Junior Jam as top qualifier and Yeomans in his first season of seniors will be keen to win as his junior career winds up. Standard Saloons will have over 30 competitors, continuing the run of incredible family day race fields that have been hosted at Drouin. Jeff Blencowe, Leigh Gooding, Daniel Walkinshaw, Mitchell Blencowe, Andrew Cormack, Matt Leek, Victor Benson, and Darwyn Lee are just some of the racers that could figure in the run to the chequered flag. Ladies Standard Saloon action is also on the schedule. Sharlene Laidlaw, Kate Stuchbery and Rebecca Glassborow are some of the drivers who will be keen to chalk up victory. Gates open from 8.30am.
