Clyde North will soon have its own FRV fire station, with the State Government revealing the chosen site for the service. On Wednesday 7 April, Fire Rescue Commissioner Ken Block joined Parliamentary Secretary for Police and Emergency Services Paul Edbrooke MP, Bass MP Jordan Crugnale and Cranbourne MP Pauline Richards at the chosen parcel of land. The new Clyde North fire station will be situated on the corner of Matterhorn Drive and Thompson Road in Clyde North. It’s directly opposite a planned ambulance station, which will also be built on Matterhorn Drive. The new fire station will be large enough to accommodate up to eight firefighters per shift and up to two appliances. It will also feature space for training and drive-through bays. “Melbourne’s outer suburbs are growing and expanding as is much of regional Victoria, and as a modern fire and rescue service, FRV is ensuring that we adapt our resources and response to reflect this,” Commissioner Block said. “The acquisition of this land is a fantastic step forward for this project, which will mean that residents in the south east will continue to be protected 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.” Ms Crugnale also labeled the announcement a “major step” for the community. “With work due to start later this year, we are well on the way to delivering our commitment of providing more services for our local community,” she said. “This is a growing community that needs a full suite of emergency services - we already have an ambulance station site, a fire station site and the 24 hour police station and Clyde CFA site will be announced soon,” she said. Mr Edbrooke said having the station built as families move into the area - rather than after - was “what we should be doing”. “It’s a strong example of how it should be done.”

Cultural celebration day More than 200 members of the Afghan community celebrated International Women’s Day and the Nawruz Festival last month with the Bakhtar Community Association. The joint event was held in Somerville on Friday 12 March and featured speeches from Bassir Qadiri, chairperson of Bakhtar; Cranbourne MP Pauline Richards, Russell Barrett of Victoria Police, Bakhtar Cultural Association youth coordinator Benazir Rasoli and Ashleigh Newnham from Monash Legal Service. The speeches were followed by poetry, artistic Indian dance, award presentations, live music, Afghan national dances and a fashion show. Bakhtar Women of The Year Award is an annual award program initiated by Bakhtar Cultural Association in 2019 to acknowledge the exceptional contribution, achievements and commitment of Afghan Women in Australia. This year saw a number of outstanding and inspirational finalists nominated from many parts of Australia, all of whom received a nomination certificate on the night: Drkhanai Sayed Ansari - Melbourne Gulgotai Bezhan - Melbourne Maryam Zahid - Sydney Mursal Jamshedi - Adelaide Roia Atmar - Perth Zahra Haidar Big - Shepparton Maryam Zahid won the title of Bakhtar Women of the Year 2021 and the award was presented to her by Ms Richards. Maryam Zahid came to Australia as a refugee in 1999 at age 20. She works as a domestic violence prevention project officer for Sydney West Multicultural Services, working with community leaders and with newly arrived refugees and migrants in Western Sydney.

She is the founder and director of ‘Afghan Women on the Move’, an initiative which mentors refugee women, nurturing self-empowerment through art and cultural programs and storytelling.

gram at Blacktown Arts. Also on the day, Navid Forogh and Favad Hassani received recognition awards for their contribution towards the Afghan community through Bakhtar Cultural Association. The event was supported by the City of Casey, the Victorian Government, Victorian Multicultural Commission and PRD Legal.

IN BRIEF Tooradin body ‘not suspicious’ The death of a man whose body was found floating near the boat ramp in Tooradin is not being treated as suspicious. The body was sighted in the water near the boat ramp at about 10.30am on Saturday 3 April. The exact cause of death is yet to be determined, however Victoria Police confirmed it is not being treated as suspicious at this stage. Police will prepare a report for the coroner.
Lochie’s gift to sick kids By Danielle Kutchel Seven-year-old lemonade entreprenuer Lochie is a star of the screen now, after presenting his fundraising total to the televised Royal Children’s Hospital Good Friday Appeal. Lochie and his mum Claire travelled into the city on Good Friday to present a cheque representing their total donations to the hospital, following Lochie’s successful lemonade stand fundraiser on Saturday 27 March. The cheque included the donation total from Aspire Childcare Cranbourne West, who raised funds for the hospital too by holding a BBQ in conjunction with Lochie’s lemonade stand. In total, Lochie donated $2014.65 to the
hospital on Good Friday. Claire said she was proud of her son, who she said “did well” on the day despite some pre-filming nerves. She said they had a great day contributing to the cause. Now, Lochie and Claire are planning for next year’s lemonade stand, with hopes of making the day even bigger and better.
Drivers caught in Easter rush Motorists in Casey were in a hurry to get to their Easter celebrations over the weekend, if the results of Operation Nexus are anything to go by. Operation Nexus ran from 12.01am on Thursday 1 April until 11.59pm Monday 5 April, and during that time Victoria Police handed out 87 infringements for speeding offences in the Casey police service area. A total of 19 unregistered vehicles were picked up over the long weekend too, and police found one disqualified driver and two unlicensed drivers. One vehicle was impounded. Seven drivers in the Casey area were under the influence - five from alcohol, and two from drugs. Six drivers were caught disobeying signals and signs, and police found one seatbelt offence along with three motorists using their phones while driving. But cyclists came out on top over the long weekend, with no cyclist offences detected.

Witnesses needed after possible assault Police are appealing for witnesses who were in the vicinity of Amberley Park Reserve, Narre Warren on 28 March 2021. At approximately 1pm, a 15-year-old female, wearing dark clothing, was at Amberley Park Reserve. It is believed the female was assaulted by a male and was located unconscious by an unidentified female walking her dogs. Police are appealing for the female witness, and any other witnesses who observed or heard anything relating to the incident at the time. Holiday gardens fun Four days of free Big Bandicoot Backyard fun are coming to Royal Botanic Gardens Cranbourne. These school holidays herald the return of the Big Bandicoot Backyard to the gardens. From 10am to 2pm, between Wednesday 14 and Saturday 17 April, families are invited to pack a picnic and spend the day immersing themselves in all things bandicoot. Casey Highway Patrol had a busy night at the end of March, impounding two vehicles within minutes of each other. Initially, the unit intercepted a Toyota sedan driving on Monahans Road in Cranbourne. The 33-year-old driver recorded a positive reading to alcohol in his system, a positive recording to illicit drugs in his system and to top it off he was unlicensed. His vehicle was impounded for 28 days and he will face a magistrate to explain his poor choices at a later date. Whilst the members were speaking to the driver, they could hear a car doing burnouts nearby. They drove a few metres up the road and located a Holden Commodore sedan with smoking tyres and rubber on the road. The 20-year-old driver had only ever held a Victorian learners permit and he had been driving without a licence holder present. His car was impounded for 30 days at a cost of $1004 and he will also face court at a later date.
Learner driver learns his lesson A learner driver who was on a suspended licence and driving without a supervising driver has been caught by police in Pakenham on Friday 2 April. Cardinia Highway Patrol intercepted the BMW on the Princes Freeway, Pakenham at 2.50pm. The 21-year-old man from Cranbourne had his vehicle impounded for 30 days at a cost of $1280 and will be required to go to court.

What was the best day of your life so far? I have been fortunate to have six children, three I gave birth to and three I acquired through marriage. I can’t differentiate so I have to say the birthday of each of my daughters. (Besides when they read the paper, they’ll be furious if I don’t include them all!) What is your proudest achievement? Given the honour of representing Cranbourne, especially as the first woman in the role. What would your last meal be? I love food, all food. It would be a bowl of steaming, pan fried dumplings. What do you love most about your role as an MP? Representing the people of Cranbourne is the best job in the world but visiting the amazing schools is the highlight. The children in our community are sparkling and I find schools to represent the optimism of our Cranbourne in its purest form. What event past, present or future would you like to witness and why? I would love to witness the falling of the Berlin Wall. Just writing about this brings me to tears. Imagine all those families that had been separated meeting again after all that time. What is your favourite TV show? Derry Girls Which six guests, dead or alive, would you like to invite to dinner? Barack Obama, Bruce Springsteen, my father (lots of things I want to ask him), Pope Francis, Gough Whitlam and Emmeline Pankhurst. What has been your most embarrassing moment? There are so many, I often fall and stumble into wrong rooms. I was asked to speak at the launch of the Labor campaign in 2018 and was quite nervous. As I walked on stage I took a mouthful of water but accidentally poured

‘Mercy’ for killer driver By Cam Lucadou-Wells An unwell Cranbourne South sales rep should not have been driving at the time when he fatally crashed with a Hallam motorcyclist in Clyde, a sentencing judge has stated. Jacob Kerry Hague, 36, was jailed for up to five years for dangerous driving causing death at the notorious South Gippsland Highway and Clyde-Five Ways Road intersection about 4pm on Sunday 13 October 2019. At the time, an “aggressive and impatient” Hague was in a hurry to get to hospital when he failed to give way. He pulled out from the centre median strip into 80 km/h northbound highway traffic - a split second before a Harley Davidson ridden by Stephen Troman crashed into the car. Mr Troman, a 67-year-old retired boilermaker and welder, had been riding home after an organised ride with motorcycle club Dan Hogs. He died at the scene from his injuries. On a fine, clear day, Hague’s view had been obscured by another waiting car. “You admitted that you did not see Mr Troman, even though he must have been almost entering the intersection as you commence to make your right-hand turn,” Victorian County Court judge Frances Hogan said in sentencing on 1 April. In the lead-up, Hague had failed to give way
to right-turning vehicles as he pulled into the centre median from Clyde Five Ways Road. A witness stated that he “looked like he was in a hurry ... agitated”. “He appeared to be in a rush,” another observed. At the median ‘rest area’, Hague “was waving his hands in the air” at a driver ahead of him, trying to make them move into the northbound traffic. Hague, with a known arrythmia and a family history of heart problems, had been suffering dizziness, chest pains and breathlessness. The night before, he’d twice woken in a “state of fright and short of breath”. Earlier that day, a doctor at Duff Street Medical Clinic, Cranbourne West advised Hague not to drive and to go to hospital. He declined an offer of an ambulance, as well as his partner’s offer to drive him to hospital. Hague instead drove himself to work in Clyde North for an appointment with a client. After more chest pain and dizzy spells, he drove towards home for his partner to take him to hospital. On the way, he stopped to text his boss to say he would take the next day off for health tests. After he resumed driving, the fatal crash occurred. Medical testing ruled out a cardiac cause for Hague’s symptoms. The symptoms however
were “clearly concerning” to him before the crash, Judge Hogan noted. Hague’s “heightened state of anxiety” due to his concern that he may suffer a cardiac event was a significant factor. “I am satisfied beyond reasonable doubt that you were distracted by your symptoms and health concerns from fully focusing upon your driving and obeying the road rules. “The gravity of your offending is that a person, like you, who was suffering symptoms of chest pain, shortness of breath and dizziness, no matter what the causation, should simply not be driving a car.” Judge Hogan said the Clyde intersection’s layout without traffic lights was a “problematic one” but didn’t excuse Hague’s “irresponsible” behaviour. “However, I make the observation that, in these circumstances, the human frailty of impatience is more likely to come to the fore.” Victim impact statements by Mr Troman’s wife Dianne and three adult children were “deeply moving” and told of “terrible grief”, Judge Hogan said. His family described a dependable “rock” and companion, a “fun loving, hard working, playful and straight forward father”. A perfectionist and skilled handyman with cars, and in the home and garden. appeared a “genuinely broken man, sobbing and distraught”, Judge Hogan said. “An innocent life has been lost by your dangerous driving,” she said. Hague had been previously charged with suspended or disqualified driving three times the last in late 2014. He had received speeding tickets for up to 40 km/h over the limit. Since then he’d matured in a stable relationship with a partner and two children. “I accept that you are fundamentally a moral person who is very family-oriented, hardworking and decent.” Since the crash, Hague was “riddled with remorse and guilt to an almost debilitating degree”. “It is graphically illustrated by the statement to your father that if you could give your life so that Mr Troman’s life could be returned, you would do so.” Judge Hogan said she was moved to exercise mercy for the sake of Hague’s partner and very young children who would be “deprived of their father’s love, care and financial support for a significant period of time”. Hague was jailed for up to five years, with a minimum two-and-a-half year non-parole period. He was disqualified from driving for the minimum 18 months.

ce and Minister for Aboriginal Affairs Gabrielle Williams called on Victorians passionate about a strong, diverse and fair Victoria to apply. The State Government has announced it will develop a new state-wide Anti-Racism Strategy to proactively prevent and address
racism in Victoria. The strategy will focus on a broad range of elements that underlay and perpetuate racial discrimination like unconscious bias, privilege, and the intersection of race and other forms of discrimination. The taskforce will also consult directly with

Now that state borders are open, the Easter and school holidays are upon us and Aussies are hitting the road in droves, the Continence Foundation of Australia is asking for help to hunt down Australia’s regional public toilets. The foundation is asking those who are out and about across the regions, whether on family holidays, road trips, weekends away or those who just want to help people out, to register the location of regional public toilets on The National Public Toilet Map through www. toiletmap.gov.au or on the app, available on Google Play or the App store. The National Public Toilet Map means there is no need to get stuck without a loo while you are travelling or out and about, and everyone who submits a regional public toilet location to the map has a chance to win one of three $500 Eftpos vouchers. While this is a cheeky campaign to build up The National Public Toilet Map, the underlying purpose is to support the millions of Australians living with continence related issues by providing them with a real time, reliable map of public toilets across the country. The National Public Toilet Map, which lists over 19,000 toilets, gives people the confidence to go about their lives, feeling supported. “The fear of not having access to toilets in public can restrict, and even stop, people from leaving their home for everyday activities,” Rowan Cockerell, CEO of the Continence Foundation of Australia, says. People living with a variety of health conditions, expectant or new mothers and the elderly can all be living with incontinence but the toilet map is also an asset to families with young children, grey nomads and day trippers alike. Open the door to fostering The State Government is encouraging more Victorians to open their homes and their hearts to foster children by making the fostering process easier. On Saturday 3 April Minister for Child Protection and Carers Luke Donnellan met Vince and Kym, who have been foster carers for more than 20 years. They have cared for more than 70 children and currently provide long-term placement for three teenage boys. While there are challenges and ups-anddowns, Vince and Kym believe the experience of caring for a child is always worth it - and there is a lot of support when you get started. The Labor Government has committed $5.8 million over four years to continue the Fostering Connections program to promote the benefits of foster caring and make the recruitment process more accessible for Victorians. Run by the Centre for Excellence in Child and Family Welfare, Fostering Connections provides a centralised service that connects prospective carers with foster care agencies, helping Victorians find the right agency in their area. Fostering Connections also provides accurate and detailed information about the process of becoming a foster carer and answers any questions people might have about fostering before they contact an agency. At any given time, about 1,700 children are being looked after by foster carers or are waiting for a placement. While the Covid pandemic has placed significant stress on many families across Victoria, it has also demonstrated the enormous goodwill of Victorians to support each other during hard times. The State Government has committed

This includes $64.7 million over the next four years and ongoing funding for the Home Stretch program, to extend state care and supports for young people in care from 18 to 21 years old. This means young people can stay with their kinship or foster carer for longer, or transition to supported independent living arrangements. The government has also allocated $10.3 million to the Better Futures program, which helps young people in care prepare for life after care, including education, employment advice and life coaching. Training and supports are available to foster carers through the Carer KaFE initiative and Client Support Funding. Warning on toxic fungi Poisonous mushrooms have started growing in Victoria following widespread recent rain and ideal growing conditions. Victoria’s deputy chief health officer Dr Angie Bone has issued a warning for people to avoid gathering wild mushrooms around Melbourne and in rural Victoria. “The recent conditions have been ideal for poisonous mushrooms, and recent rains have seen them start to sprout in metropolitan Melbourne and regional Victoria,” Dr Bone said. “While commercially-sold mushrooms are safe, poisonings can occur when people gathering wild mushrooms inadvertently include toxic species. Poisonous mushrooms may appear very similar to edible varieties.” In 2020 the combination of coronavirus and an ideal growing season saw a record number calls about mushroom poisoning incidents to Victoria’s Poisons Information Centre. Last year there were 426 calls about potential mushroom poisoning. This is more than double the number of calls in the previous two years - 194 calls in 2019 and 200 calls in 2018. There were multiple poisoning cases requiring admission and treatment in an intensive care unit. The mushrooming season starts when rain encourages growth of the fungi in the still warm earth. Two toxic mushrooms are the Death Cap fungus, Amanita phalloides and the Yellow
Staining mushroom, Agaricus xanthodermus. The Death Cap is a large mushroom, with a cap ranging from light olive green to greenish yellow in colour. The gills are white, and the base of the stem is surrounded by a cupshaped sac. The commonly found Yellow Staining mushroom turns yellow when the cap or stem is bruised by a thumbnail. The most dangerous variety is the Death Cap, usually found near deciduous trees, especially around oaks, in some Melbourne suburbs and rural areas. Dr Bone said anyone who becomes ill after eating mushrooms should seek urgent medical advice and, if possible, take samples of the whole mushroom for identification. “Symptoms of poisoning can include violent stomach pains, nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea. “Symptoms may subside after a day or two -- but this doesn’t necessarily mean recovery in the case of Death Cap poisoning,” Dr Bone said. “Death can follow within 48 hours from serious liver damage. The Death Cap is extremely toxic and responsible for 90 per cent of all mushroom poisoning deaths. “If you have any doubts about a species of fungus or mushroom, don’t eat it. Cooking, peeling or drying these mushrooms does not remove or inactivate the poison.” The Poisons Information Centre can be contacted on 13 11 26.

Rex name shame By Mitchell Clarke Almost one year since alleged corruption was exposed within the City of Casey, a former councillor is still fighting to clear his name. Former Springfield Ward councillor Rex Flannery, who resigned as deputy mayor just days before the State Government sensationally sacked the entire council in February 2020, says the events of the past 12 months are still “eating” him up. He has now officially requested that his name is removed from both a councillor honour board in the customer service centre and a wall plaque in Bunjil Place. “I have never had any involvement into this alleged corruption scandal and therefore I do not wish to have my name associated with past or former councillors who may have brought our City of Casey into disrepute,” he told Star News. “People look at your name and they see that you’re from Casey Council and immediately they put you in that same mould, which couldn’t be further than the truth. “It’s just horrible to have been a councillor in that term. It gives you a sickening feeling in your gut and now I have to live with that.“ Mr Flannery argues his name should never have been placed on the plaque celebrating the $126 million Bunjil development because at the time he didn’t support the project. “I guess I’ve eaten a little bit of humble pie with Bunjil Place. I’ve been able to see the value that place brings to the community but at the time I was against the development and I wasn’t once consulted (about having my name included),” he said. He also claims former ex-ward partner, Sam Aziz, stated to him that he “wished he never had my name added to the plaque”. “That was the only time I agreed with him,” Mr Flannery said. While Mr Flannery hasn’t accused any former councillor of committing wrongdoing, he said anyone found guilty from the IBAC hearing should immediately have their honours stripped. “They need to have their plaques removed

Fun and laughs at awards By Danielle Kutchel Easter Monday in Cranbourne West was full of laughter, colour and fun as families enjoyed the first ever African Cultural Day Awards. This event was hosted by Multicultural Youth Support Services (MYSS), at Cranbourne West Community Hub. Families came to celebrate the vibrant African culture and the achievements of youth within the south-eastern African-Australian community. “We weren’t sure about the weather in the morning but it turned out to be great sunny day” said MYSS project manager and speaker Danyal Diallo The celebrations started outdoors with children enjoying a nearby playground, impromptu soccer games, a barbecue lunch and face painting by Mel’s Face Painting Melbourne. As the weather cooled down the families headed inside the hub for the formalities of the day. “It was a huge turnout; we were expecting between 50-100 people to arrive; it turned out in big numbers,” Mr Diallo said. Guests enjoyed an array of traditional African dances as well as a speech given by an inspirational year 12 student from the MYSS Homework Club, Sarah Machar. Sarah shared the challenges she has faced coming into a new country and learning a new language from scratch. The event acknowledged the hard work of MYSS in connecting the community, especially during the Covid-19 pandemic when MYSS staff distributed supermarket vouchers and advocated for better support for members of the community. This hard work was acknowledged and recognised by the City of Casey, which named MYSS the ‘2021 Community Group of the Year’ earlier this year. MYSS founder Peter Mamer Aguto and Mr Diallo thanked those who have been supporting the organisation. Mr. Aguto said: “MYSS is a product for African communities that is led by the community and for the community. “It is a privilege to serve the community in such a direct way. It’s fulfilling having to see the seeds we plant in our generation and to ponder on what they may become in the future, I thank God for it all,” he said. Spirited effort by our firies By Danielle Kutchel Casey firies have raised thousands for the annual Good Friday Appeal as residents opened their hearts and wallets for the cause. Berwick CFA and Narre Warren CFA collected a total of $10,472.35 from their collection spot at the High Street intersection in Berwick, beating their total from 2019. Berwick firefighter Meg, whose 20-monthold son Bailey has spent time in the specialist care of the hospital , said the total was “incredible” and said the Berwick and Narre Warren CFA crews were grateful to those who donated.
“The Berwick CFA and Narre Warren CFA would like to send a huge thankyou to everyone who donated at either the High Street intersection on the day or to our virtual tin shake,” she said. Over on Sladen Street in Cranbourne, members of the Cranbourne CFA raised $19,495.25, bringing Casey’s total to $29,967.60. “We definitely weren’t expecting that,” said Cranbourne firefighter Zoe Russell. “In 2019 we only raised $13,500 at that intersection so it’s a big jump after the year we’ve had.” She said passers-by had wanted to give “as
much as they could”, and even donations of just 50 cents had made a huge difference. Ms Russell said she and her fellow firies hope that the money raised will help give sick kids better quality of life, improving the technology available to help them get better and live the life they deserve. “We hope it goes a long way,” she said. Overall, the CFA as a whole collected a whopping $1,028,328 for the Royal Children’s Hospital. On Good Friday, CFA Chief Officer Jason Heffernan presented the cheque for more than $1 million alongside members from Berwick
and Narre Warren Fire Brigades. Mr Heffernan gave congratulations to all involved in this year’s Appeal. “It was an honour to present the cheque to the Royal Children’s Hospital on behalf of the dedicated CFA members right across Victoria,” he said. “CFA brigades have a long and rich history supporting the appeal and this year was no exception. “Congratulations to all of our CFA members involved in raising funds for the Royal Children’s Hospital - it was a fantastic effort and you and your communities should be proud.”

Help for Bass businesses Local businesses are urged to investigate their eligibility for wage subsidy payments of up to $20,000 per worker to take on people who have been most affected by the pandemic. The State Government opened employer applications for the $250 million Jobs Victoria Fund on Friday, 26 March. The fund will support at least 10,000 people into work and is a key component of the government’s $619.4 million Jobs Victoria boost which also involves the quadrupling of the service’s job search and support workforce. Victorian small and medium-sized businesses, sole traders, local councils, social enterprises, universities and not-for-profits are invited to apply for a share of the wage subsidies pool. The fund will help Victorian businesses and organisations to rebuild and grow by providing a wage subsidy of up to $20,000 per eligible employee to meet the costs of taking on new workers for the first 12 months of their employment. Women’s employment has been disproportionately affected by the pandemic and $150 million of the fund is dedicated to supporting women back into work, including $50 million supporting women over the age of 45. The fund also focuses on people looking for work who are young, those who have been unemployed for six months or more, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, refugees and asylum seekers, and people living with a disability. “These subsidies could be the difference between a business being able to put on a

Paws for a good cause RSPCA Victoria is encouraging Victorians to join thousands of other Australians and their pooches to hit the pavement this May, to raise funds for the RSPCA. The RSPCA’s Million Paws Walk is an annual highlight for dog lovers across the country where people and their canine friends walk together to raise funds to support the thousands of animals that need the RSPCA’s help every year. In response to the pandemic, RSPCA Victoria has adapted the much-loved national dog walking event for 2021. Replacing organised community events and running in a revised event format, Million Paws Walk: Walk This May is asking Victorian dog owners to pound the pavement in their neighbourhood or backyard for 30 minutes a day for the month of May to raise funds to fight animal cruelty. Million Paws Walk: Walk this May runs nationally and while social distancing is a national priority, Australia’s super pooches still need enrichment and exercise. RSPCA Victoria CEO Dr Liz Walker hopes Victorians will take the opportunity to celebrate their four-legged friends by walking to fundraise for animals in need. “The past year has highlighted for many of us the invaluable comfort and companionship our pets provide. However, there are many animals that haven’t yet found caring forever homes,” she said.
“It’s our job at RSPCA Victoria to care for, protect and find homes for the many animals in need and we rely on community support to do this. “I encourage all Victorians to take on the challenge and register to Walk this May with the knowledge they will be helping other animals find their perfect companion.” Participants are encouraged to record all their dog walks using the ‘Pawdometre’ on the Million Paws Walk website, as well as fundraise in the lead up to the event. Money raised from online fundraising and merchandise sales will be used to support RSPCA Victoria’s work within the community, including caring for more than 20,000 animals that come through its shelters each year. RSPCA Ambassador Tim Campbell has hosted the Million Paws Walk at Albert Park for 12 consecutive years and while he won’t be on stage at Albert Park this year, he’ll be walking his RSPCA rescue dog, Oscar, in acknowledgement of the many animals in need across the state. “It’s more important than ever that we keep on walking our four-legged friends this year. While the pandemic has impacted our lives in many ways, we still have a responsibility to our pets and all the animals in our community so while I walk Oscar this May, I’ll be thinking of all the animals we’ll be helping RSPCA Victoria to care for and rehome,” said Tim. Speedy Zack’s on track By Russell Colvin Jam Jerrup’s Zack Johnson will back on track again in just over a weeks’ time for the third round of the mi-bike Motorcycle Insurance Australian Superbike Championship (ASBK), which heads to Wakefield Park on the outskirts of Goulburn in New South Wales. Johnson was more than happy with his points haul after a less than straightforward run to sixth place overall in the opening round of the Australian Supersport 300 Championship, which took place at Winton Motor Raceway last month. Scoring a 9-5-8 result, Johnson heads into this weekend more than confident of being able to replicate his results again. “After the weekend we had in Winton it has given the Johnson Racing Team and I a big boost heading into Wakefield Park, and for the rest of the 2021 season as well,” said the 21-year-old, who is just 13 points away from third place in the championship and a further 35 points off the championship lead. “We went into Winton with a goal of finishing inside the top 10 overall, so to be sitting in sixth place in the championship, and as the highest placed Kawasaki rider, it just makes me even more confident,” added Johnson. Overall, Johnson has had a total of five race starts at Wakefield Park, two of them in the 2018 Australian Supersport Championship, and the other three in the 2017 Australian Supersport 300 Championship, which saw him finishing with an 8-6-8 result. Johnson says the 2.2km rural circuit is simple in design, but is a really fun track to race on. “It’s a track with not many fast corners, so you can normally make some moves which makes the racing quite competitive and good to watch,” Johnson explained. “It’s also forgiving if you don’t qualify well – it’s not the end of the world if you start the race towards the back of the grid as you can always make up positions under brakes into turn two, eight and 10. I’m just excited to get back there and see what we can do,” he added. What makes Johnson even more eager for the upcoming ASBK round, and hopeful of possibly even better results, is the fact he will have his ‘crew chief’, Chris Edmunds from Lynchy’s Garage trackside for the first time this

So, to have Chris at the round itself will no doubt make the progression a lot easier and be able to hit the ground running to focus on a good race setup.
“On top of that, we have been doing a lot of added work to the Bitubo suspension which will help with lap times for sure.” Johnson’s goals for round three are pretty straight forward – to finish within the top five and keep chipping away at a possible third place finish overall in this year’s championship. “Now that we know what we can do as a team, I have set a target of at least finishing in-

The main thing we have to do is finish every race. If we can do that, we should be a in good position come the end of the year.” The third round of the Australian Superbike Championship is scheduled for 16-18 April.
It’s Batt to the future for Lang Lang’s toughest breed By David Nagel Lang Lang legends Greg and Rod Batt played in an era where it was important to be ruthless and show very little emotion on the football field. It was almost a case of hit-or-be-hit in the ‘70s and ‘80s when the Batt brothers plied their trade for their beloved Tigers. Showing emotion – well it just wasn’t considered the done thing. But even these two tough guys were hit in the heart on Friday as the Lang Lang Football Club hosted its official function to launch its brand new facility on Soldiers Road. “There’s no argument about it, there is definitely an emotional feeling about it all and we couldn’t be happier for the club to be honest,” Rod said, standing shoulder to shoulder with his brother, just as they did in their playing days. “I never thought this day would come to be honest and it’s sensational to be here and see this. The car park is full and you can’t ask for any more than that.” The Batt name is synonymous with Lang Lang, with Fred Batt awarded life membership in 1975 before his son Rod received the ultimate recognition in 1988. Rod’s son Kurt is widely regarded as the greatest ever player at the club. them got up to mischief. “They looked after us and it was enjoyable, we always felt at home at the football club.” Greg said he hoped the new facility would have the same impact on potential recruits as it had on him on Friday. “It might sound funny but seeing this facility and what they’ve got today just makes you want to go out and play football again,” he said. “Surely it’s going to attract some quality players and make the club as a whole even stronger.” The Tigers are currently in the midst of one of the longest premiership droughts in Australian football, with their last senior title coming all the way back in 1936. The next premiership promises to be one of the more stunning chapters in the storied history of the region. “We went close a couple of times but were never quite good enough,” Rod explained. “I’ve heard guys that have gone before us, parents and old players and the like, and they’ve dreamed that one day we could do it. “Now I’m in the same boat, hoping my sons could do it - and that’s gone past now and now they’ll be dreaming of the next generation doing it. A new place to call home By David Nagel You get the feeling that Lang Lang president Chris Brew hasn’t had too many opportunities to just sit back and enjoy the magnificence of the club’s brand-new facility at Soldiers Road. Brew has been run off his feet in recent times as the club prepared for one of its biggest ever occasions, the grand opening and firstgame at its new venue after a 120-year stay at its traditional home at the showgrounds. In farming terms – quite appropriate given the grounds surroundings - it’s been a long row to hoe for Brew and his team in recent times. But on Friday night, with official duties done, he finally got time to take a breath. “I just feel very proud at the moment, very proud of everyone associated with the club,” Brew said, sipping a cold beer on the club’s new balcony. “A lot of teamwork and a lot of group involvement has taken place between the sporting clubs, the council, the Bendigo Bank - our community company - the committee, and the players have been incredible as well. “It’s just been a fantastic effort to get the facility to where it is today after such a short turnaround from the cricket grand final last Sunday. We had five days to turn it into a football venue when we had never played here before and had no idea what it looked like…it’s just been an incredible effort all round.” Brew said many factors had made this a challenging time, not just for him but his football club. “I said to someone earlier today I’m just taking things five minutes at a time today because it’s been an overwhelming experience to be honest,” he said. “It’s been a really challenging time for my family personally, but also for the club, coming from where we’ve come from, without the success, the build-up of expectation from last year, and getting the handover of the facility one week before Covid struck. “Then we had the build up again this year, so to finally be here is really satisfying. Now we want to just sit back and enjoy the football and netball.” Brew agreed when it was suggested that the Tigers new home ground is comparable to anything in the region. “It is fantastic and we are really grateful and really fortunate to have what we have here today and it gives us the opportunity to present ourselves as a showcase venue for the Ellinbank league,” he said. “We now have a suitable venue for our new women’s team to play their first game in three weeks’ time and we just couldn’t even consider something like that without a facility of this quality. “It gives our community an opportunity to pull together as one, with men’s, women’s and junior football, and netball, it gives us a great 18 STAR NEWS

Embarking on a new era By Nick Creely Stepping into the powerful Eastern Football League’s Premier Division – arguably the strongest local football competition in Victoria – a lot of eyes will be firmly fixed on how Berwick travels in 2021. After a stunning period of success for the club, which culminated in premierships in 2015, 2017 and 2018, the Wickers are ready and primed for a new challenge. We’ve been tracking along well, both our practice matches have been good, we’ve put in some young kids. They’re fit, so it’s just about getting our number one side on the park.” On entering the Eastern Football League’s top-flight “We know we’re going into a really strong league. In that five years we’ve been dominant in Outer East and South East, the guys are now coming into that prime, and we’ve also got a new crop coming through who’ll be looking to take over that mantel. Sides are a lot different in this league, so there’s a lot of different things you’ve got to put into it – its exciting, but it’s an unknown for us.” On the recruitment and list strategy “We’ve retained basically everyone, and got them on board straight away which is great – once we had the opportunity to look at what we have, we were then lucky in recruiting. With the salary cap and the unknown, it was challenging. We’ve tried to recruit what we need, and then we’ve got guys back and a few young guys in too. There’s much anticipation and focus on the Wickers heading into its first season in the Premier Division after winning three flags since 2015, and with new coach Clint Evans steering the ship, there is growing confidence that the group can do some damage and really push itself against the likes of Vermont, Blackburn, Balwyn and many more powerful clubs. A round one blockbuster against Noble Park – the Wickers’ closest Eastern rival – will make for spectacular viewing for a variety of reasons, with the 17 April clash expecting to draw a monster crowd at the picturesque Edwin Flack Reserve. Understanding the need to tinker with the list slightly after 2019’s runnersup finish to Narre Warren and the power of the Eastern league, Evans has set about bringing back some former premiership heroes to the club, as well as lock away almost all of its champion list. Headlining the list of returnees/recruits is star ex-skipper Bryce Rutherford, one of the south east’s most dominant midfielders, important defender Michael Riseley who played with Woori Yallock in 2019, as well as forward Trent Thomas. Anthony Vella and Anthony Burr are also two huge additions to the Wickers after joining the club via Noble Park, but played at Cranbourne in 2019. Vella
in particular is pure class with ball in hand and an elite runner who will add another element of speed and dare to the Wickers. One of the Wickers’ major strengths will be its midfield group, headlined by Bryce Rutherford, Madi Andrews, Travis Tuck, Anthony Vella and many more, while the forward and backlines are unbelievably stable and possess a strong mix of power and running ability. After kicking 64 goals in 2019, and 56 in 2018, Harry Money is another to keep an eye on. He’s a handful for opposition defenders because of his ability overhead plus his speed at ground level and is sure to relish the challenge of playing on Eastern’s defenders after a couple of dominant seasons. The likes of Tim Gunn, Jo West, Tom Brennan and Bailey Asher are also unheralded stars who are also vitally important to the side’s fortunes. After missing 2019 with a knee injury, skipper Luke Sheppard is basically a new recruit for the club and is a genuine line-breaking player capable of tearing the game apart. The Wickers will certainly feel the loss of Lucas Jellyman-Turner, but feel it has plenty of depth and kids coming through to cover the speedster’s departure. It won’t be an easy opening month of the season for Evans’ group, with the Bulls to open the season, before Rowville (fourth in 2019) and Balwyn (second in 2019) in consecutive weeks, but one thing is for certain, the Wickers won’t take a backwards step.

Two state titles go up for grabs at Nyora Raceway By Dean Thompson Nyora Raceway will give fans not one, but two Victorian titles on the same night this Saturday. The Victorian title race for Speedway Sedans - Victoria Junior Sedan competitors in up to 1500cc engine powered race cars whilst the Victorian Speedway Council Sports Sedans will also compete for their state title on the same night. Also for the first time in years, the Formula 500s are appearing at the ‘Bullring’ for adults and juniors and the event is also supported by the Ladies Standard Saloons. The best of the best in Victorian Junior Sedan racing will line-up in the Speedway Sedans Victorian Junior title with many of the cars that have already been competing at the track among those to watch out for. Carter Metcalfe from Mildura is coming to Nyora for the first time, and so far on results he has been one of only two drivers matching it with winning drivers such as Jayden Bryant and Linken Paterson, the other being Jaxson Vella another who is also in the field. Farrell, Jessica O’Donnell, Bryce Leek, Rowdy Andreatta, Riley Taylor and others fill up a healthy list of entrants. In the Sports Sedan title race Victorian champion and Nyora member Jamie Paull leads the nominations. The line-up is a cracker and we could pencil in half the field for a potential win with all things going right for them. Some of the drivers to watch though include Officer’s Dale Morrison, Pakenham’s Damien Miller a former champion, Ricky Cornwall, Warrick Taylor from Cranbourne, Tristan McGraw, David Donegan, Lee Beach from Ferntree Gully and Andrew Jordan. Nyora has a great number of competitors in the class all looking for a home track advantage and a top result. Troy Glassborow, Jayde and Chris Aarts, Matt Reddecliffe, Simon Bent and Cameron Dike are some of those racers. All the action on Saturday starts from 4.00pm whilst the gate will be open for public from around 11am for entry. The cost is great value at $20 for an adult, kids 12 to 16 are $10 each whilst all other children are free. Pensioners are $10 and a family ticket of two adults and two kids 12-16 is $50.
