The first sod has been turned by some very enthusiastic diggers at the new Berwick Campus Early Explorers site. With the help of a $50,000 State Government grant the space will soon be developed into a natural outdoor ‘classroom’. When completed the site will feature wetlands, woodlands, open pasture, a garden with indigenous plants, paths, platforms and sensory spaces. Here, children will learn about local Aboriginal culture and heritage and the connections to the land around them. The Early Explorers program is integral to the curriculum at Little Beacons. Through play, children connect with their land in a way that can’t be done under a roof, or within walls, and they develop a respect for the space.

Scam calls alert A cruel scam targeting women and seasonal workers has been circulating in the community, prompting a warning from police. The victims are said to be promised a “quick way” of earning extra money straight away, police say. But the scammers then force their victims to pay a “one-off joining fee” of $780 and recruit two people within one month to receive the $5000 bonus. According to Victoria Police, the scammers are mostly targeting women or seasonal workers and have been described as “very convincing”.

Police have urged the public to warn their loved ones about the mean deception. The recent swindle comes as Telstra revealed it is blocking 1.5 million scam calls a week as part of their ‘Cleaner Pipes’ initiative. On an active day, up to 500,000 calls are blocked by the telecommunications giant before they can potentially defraud customers, with an average of 6.5 million suspected scams cut off monthly. Telstra regional general manager Loretta Willaton said scam calls weren’t only annoying, they also had a real financial impact on Australians.

“We know scams cost Australians $48 million each year but we’re stopping scammers in their tracks with a new, smart platform that monitors scammers in real time and blocks millions of calls from ever reaching our customers,” she said. The dodgy calls are monitored through a smart platform which can track inbound calls on the Telstra network that have suspicious characteristics. Prior to the automation, Telstra was already blocking more than one million calls per month using a manual process. “While we’re seeing more scams and they’re more becoming more sophisticated, we’re

meeting the challenge at Telstra and we’re blocking 1.5 million calls each week,” Ms Willaton said. “We’re doubling down on scammers through Telstra’s Cleaner Pipes initiative and blocking around 6.5 million suspected scam calls a month before they even reach our customers.” Some of the most prolific scams include spoofed number calls either pretending to be a legitimate service (like the ATO) or a random number entirely, and the ‘Wangiri’ or one-ring scams. Family hub is on its way By Mitchell Clarke Construction on a $4 million early learning centre in the heart of an Officer estate will begin next month. A contract was officially awarded to build the Timbertop Early Learning Centre, located within the Timbertop estate, during Cardinia Shire Council’s February meeting. Officer Ward councillor Tammy Radford said the “very exciting” development was critically important for the booming community, which is made up of many young families. The centre will hold two kindergarten program rooms, three consulting rooms for Maternal Child Health nurses and allied health professionals, as well as a community room, staff room, amenities and outdoor play areas. Cr Radford said Officer residents had long been struggling to access the services within these facilities. “Many residents have had to go out of their Ward, out of the Shire even, to get to these services, so (this is) needed for this growing Officer Ward,” she said. “I am sure there will be many young families in our local area looking forward to this exciting new hub for kindergarten, early learning and care services for young children and their families.” The new centre will be located next to the newly-opened Orchard Park Primary School. Cr Radford said the development will “deliver on one of the final key pieces of community infrastructure in the Timbertop estate”. “I’d like to refer to it as a one-stop shop for families. It’s much easier to be able to have everything integrated together,” she added. The project follows the start of construction at the nearby Rix Road Integrated Child and Family Centre, which will provide more than 130 kindergarten places.

Cardinia Shire Council mayor Brett Owen

said he was pleased the project had moved a step closer. “Council’s significant investment in family and children’s services, including increasing the number of kinder places available, will address the forecast growth in demand and represents our commitment to the future generations of

Cardinia Shire,” Cr Owen said. The project will be funded by developer contributions and the Victorian School Building Authority, including $1.6 million from the Victorian Government’s Children’s Facilities Capital Program. Construction is expected to start in March 2021, with an opening date slated for 2022.

Crash at lights outside Star News headquarters By Mitchell Clarke and Danielle Kutchel A man was taken to The Alfred hospital following a crash in Pakenham. Emergency services were called to the intersection of Army Road and Princes Highway just before 4pm on Friday 19 February following reports of a crash. A silver Mercedes sustained significant damage after it appeared to have been struck by another car on the passenger side door. Two people were assessed on scene, an Ambulance Victoria spokeswoman confirmed, however she couldn’t provide details on age or injuries.. An air ambulance was dispatched to the area and was seen hovering over the Star News Group office however it later landed at the Pakenham oval. Police initially said the male patient was being airlifted because of the “extent of his injuries”.

The Gazette understands he was eventually taken to hospital by road ambulance. A spokesman from The Alfred hospital confirmed the patient was in a stable condition. The circumstances surrounding the collision aren’t yet fully known.

Toomuc overhaul on way By Mitchell Clarke Long awaited works to upgrade the Toomuc Recreation Reserve in Pakenham are expected to be complete by the end of the year. Construction on the project is expected to begin in March 2021, after Cardinia Shire Council awarded a construction tender during the February council meeting. The $6.3 million project - which received funding from all three levels of government will see the site’s three pavilions and the little athletics building upgraded. The northern pavilion will have the ground floor extended to include change rooms for both football and cricket clubs, as well as separate facilities for the netball club. A renovated canteen, new first aid room, extra storage and a balcony extension on the upper level is also planned. The southern pavilion will be upgraded to have accessible amenities and change rooms, public toilets, a first aid room, and an upgraded kitchen. The baseball pavilion will include accessible toilets, a canteen, new umpire rooms and accessible ramps and paths, while the little athletics building upgrade is set to involve the refurbishment of the kitchen. Federal La Trobe MP Jason Wood had previously described the current facilities as “ageing” and “totally unacceptable”. “My first visit alongside budding netball

They’ve got no showers, no facilities and it was bucketing down with rain. There will be a lot of excitement at the club, especially for the hard-working volunteers, parents and players who have put up with very bad facilities,“ Mr Wood said. Cardinia mayor Brett Owen said Toomuc was a popular recreational facility, adding that sport and recreation were of “great importance” in the shire. “These upgrades will cater to the growing needs of sporting groups and enhance acces-

sibility for the large number of families who use the reserve,” he said. Toomuc Ward councillor Stephanie Davies said the announcement was “welcome news” for clubs and residents alike. “After the upgrade project, we expect Toomuc Reserve to be used even more by local sporting groups,” Cr Davies said. “This project is a great example of what can be achieved when community groups, federal, state and local government collaborate and work together in genuine partnership.” The Federal Government put $4.75 million towards the project, while Cardinia Shire Council and the State Government each funded $1.5 million and $50,000, respectively. Sport Australia also contributed $500,000. In a social media statement, the Pakenham Lions Netball Club said they were “absolutely thrilled” for all clubs based out of the reserve. “For our netty family, this is a game changer, in having facilities and amenities for the future,” the statement read. The club will be forced to temporarily move to the James Bathe Recreation Reserve during construction. “Although our preference is always to remain connected and stand proudly with the Pakenham Football Club, in this instance we will be at a seperate location but it will only be for a few months, before we are all home together again,” the statement added.

Vaccine ready to roll out By Mitchell Clarke Aged care premises across the south east are among the first in the state to roll up their sleeves for the highly awaited Covid-19 vaccine, but facilities within the Cardinia Shire will need to wait a bit longer. From Monday 22 January, more than 240 aged and disability care homes in 190 Australian towns and suburbs will receive the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine. Facilities in Drouin, Warragul, Cranbourne and Cranbourne East were among the towns and suburbs selected. Not one town within Cardinia Shire was included in the first phase of the roll out. When asked how the facilities were chosen, Department of Health secretary professor Brendan Murphy said the selection and scheduling of facilities was a “complex logistic exercise”. “As of already, we do not have community transmission, so there is no burning platform. It’s perfectly safe to take four or five weeks to vaccinate all of the aged care residents,” he said “And the logistics teams have planned a very detailed logistics plan along with the distribution providers, along with surge workforce providers to get distribution across the country, and a schedule where they can move

Cardinia to clean up

Cardinia Shire residents, businesses and schools are encouraged to sign up for this year’s Clean Up Australia Day event on Sunday 7 March. Cardinia Shire Council mayor Brett Owen said there’s already a number of local spots registered and last year community volunteers and council removed around 15 cubic metres of bagged rubbish and 19 tyres from across the shire. “I encourage everyone to get involved this year, find a local park, reserve or walking track. You can register a new ‘clean up’ site , or sign up to attend a local spot already registered on the Clean Up Australia Day website,” he said. All Cardinia Shire residents who register a site will receive a free clean-up kit including bags and gloves. Cardinia Shire will also assist with the collection and disposal of all rubbish collected on the day. Over 18.3 million Australians have donated their time as part of Clean Up Australia Day activities over the last 30 years. Clean Up Australia Day started in 1990. It is estimated that more than 380,000 Ute-loads of rubbish has been removed as part of Clean Up Australia Day activities Schools and local businesses can sign up for Business Clean Up Day on Tuesday 2 March and Schools Clean Up Day on Friday 5 March. Hoons to feel full force By Mitchell Clarke Hoon drivers have been put on notice, with Victoria Police vowing to target reckless driving meets across the south east as part of a pointed operation. Operation Sumatra, which runs most weekends across Cardinia, Casey and Greater Dandenong, is now in full swing and has resulted in several vehicles being impounded locally, police say. “Police have no tolerance for behaviours that often lead to injuries including fatalities and senseless damage,” a police spokesperson said in an online statement. “Expect that if you participate in these events that your vehicle will be scrutinised with any faults resulting in fines and certificates of unroadworthy.”

The stern warning coincides with a police crack down on hoons, which saw 14 people arrested in raids across Melbourne suburbs including Officer, Hampton Park and Dandenong North. Over two days, officers raided 14 properties as well as seizing 12 cars of a total value of more than $370,000. The raids were carried out in relation to an alleged illegal hoon meet in St Kilda on 21 January. The arrested men, aged 18 to 45 years, face “serious criminal” charges carrying up to six years’ jail. They have been charged with a raft of offences including conduct endangering a person, possess prohibited weapons, possess controlled weapon, possess drug of dependence, possess imitation firearm, attempted criminal

damage and behave in a riotous manner. Victoria Police Assistant Commissioner Russell Barrett said hoon activity was “dangerous and not simply a bit of harmless fun”. “We’ve seen these kinds of behaviours result in both death and serious injury,” he said. A/C Barrett said the penalties for hooning were significant. “We have no tolerance for illegal hoon activity and remain committed to disrupting and prosecuting anyone involved in this type of dangerous behaviour,” he added. “We know this type of behaviour is incredibly frustrating for local residents and police are committed to working closely with community groups to address their concerns.” To report any dangerous driving or hoon activity, contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Turn the compost corner By Gabriella Payne In Victoria, around half of our household waste is made up of food and garden scraps which end up in landfill each year, breaking down to create harmful greenhouse gases that affect the air quality and contribute to climate change. But a new initiative from the Cardinia Shire Council is inspiring locals to put their food scraps to good use and encouraging everyone to get on board the composting train - with their new and improved compost corner at Deep Creek Reserve, Pakenham. The newly invigorated space hopes to teach residents about the benefits of composting and show everyone just how easy it is to start your own system at home. A trail has been set up in the reserve, inviting visitors to go on a journey and learn about food wastage and worm farms through a range of new displays and signs. The nearby Deep Creek Reserve Cafe is also making use of these new facilities, by depositing their food scraps in the composting system and utilising the newly built worm farms and herb gardens. Cardinia Shire Council Mayor, Brett Owen, said that it was fantastic to raise awareness about the importance of composting and hoped that this initiative would inspire many locals to get started on their own sustainable projects at home. “This space is not only practical for the onsite cafe to compost their food scraps and grow food, but is also an engaging area that will be used for school and community education,” Mayor Owen said. “And best of all, the composting systems on display are available at your local hardware store or online, so you can easily create your own compost corner at home.” But if you don’t have room at home for your

According to the organisation, in the Cardinia Shire, “34 percent of what the population throws in the bin is food scraps” - something they are hoping to see change over the coming years. As a way of thanking residents for their composting efforts, members of the Living & Learning scheme are rewarded with a free bag of ready-to-go garden compost each year - a

Coup fears By Gabriella Payne Many people from Melbourne’s Burmese minority groups are becoming increasingly worried about friends and family members back home in Myanmar, in light of the country’s recent military coup. With the military now once again in control of the country and political tensions continuing to escalate, many leaders from Melbourne’s Rohingya, Karen and Chin communities say that they “fear the worst” for their compatriots, due to the military’s history of violence and ethnic cleansing. In 2017, almost 800,000 Rohingya people fled to neighbouring Bangladesh when Myanmar’s military began murdering, raping and torching Rohingya villages in the Rakhine state, a move labelled as “a textbook example of ethnic cleansing” by the United Nations. Majid Abdul, a Rohingya community leader from Melbourne’s South East who was persecuted by the military and fled the country fearing for his life, said that he was afraid that the current situation would see more violence break out against minorities in Myanmar. “Many people are worried about family members still in Burma,” Mr Majid said. “We don’t know what will happen. There are protests all over the country but the military are powerful and ruthless.” Since Myanmar’s military (the Tatmadaw) seized control of the nation from the democratically elected leader Aung San Suu Kyi on the morning of Monday 1 February, citizen protests and demonstrations have been met with gunfire, tanks, internet black outs and arrests as the military declared a year long state of emergency and took Ms Suu Kyi and other ministers into custody. This is not the first time Myanmar’s military have taken control over the country either from 1962, the armed forces ruled Myanmar (formerly Burma) for almost 50 years, and it wasn’t until 2011 that the country began making tentative strides towards regaining democracy. Aung San Suu Kyi was elected as Myanmar’s leader in late 2011 and was hailed as a “beacon of democracy” by many, after spending almost 15 years under house arrest (when the military ruled) and being awarded the Nobel Peace prize in 1991. However, Ms Suu Kyi’s international reputation suffered greatly in recent times, as news of the military crackdown and Rohingya genocide in Myanmar’s Rakhine state surfaced in 2017, which, to this date, Ms Suu Kyi has failed to condemn and acknowledge. Majid Abdul is just one of the Rohingya people who faced military persecution in the Rakhine state, and after escaping Myanmar for the safety of Bangladeshi refugee camps, he eventually made his way to Australia - but the atrocities he saw have stuck with him. “I grew up in the Rakhine state and my parents ran their own business, fishing, cultivating and growing produce,” Mr Majid said. “And then the military came when I was young and arrested our parents and extorted them, and I remember all of us children crying together, I still remember.” Mr Majid said that once a month, sometimes even once a week, the military would re-

turn to arrest his parents and extort them, and “if they didn’t have money, they would have to sell everything”, in order to meet the military’s demands. “We were scared and thought we must hide,” Mr Majid said. “We fled the country because we knew that the military would kill us one day.” Now, having made a home in Australia, Mr Majid feels lucky to have found a “safe and happy” place to live, free from danger, but with the recent coup seeing the Burmese military rise to power once again, he fears for fellow Rohingyan people back home and those stuck in refugee camps. “Our people are persecuted and discriminated against,” he said. “We would like to see more pressure from the international community on the military to restore democracy and stop violence against minorities.” The United Nations have also expressed concerns that the recent military coup will worsen the situation for the estimated 600,000 Rohingya people still living in Myanmar and for those people currently living in refugee camps, who will now be even more fearful of returning home. Talks had begun about the possibility of Rohingyans stuck in Bangladesh’s refugee camps to start returning home to Myanmar soon, but with this recent coup frightening many, this move looks unlikely. Cath Scarth, the CEO of migrant refugee settlement agency AMES Australia, said that the conflict and uncertainty happening in Myanmar at the moment could cause higher levels of anxiety and stress for Burmese refugee communities. “People are incredibly anxious, and particularly because for many of the refugees who are here, they have gone through that kind of period of persecution themselves and so will be very, very anxious about family members and what it might mean for them,” Ms Scarth said. “And just the uncertainty. I think it’s very difficult for people to understand what might happen. Anything like that is hard when you’re at such a distance, but doubly hard when it’s not always easy to get direct information about loved ones,” she said. Ms Scarth encouraged Melbourne’s Burmese community to reach out if they needed help or just someone to talk with, and recommended people “check in on one another” in a neighbourly way. “It’s even more important in times of crisis, such as the coup in Myanmar, that refugee communities are given as much support as possible,” Ms Scarth said. “The (Burmese) community here will be feeling very helpless in terms of what’s going on, so even just asking if someone is ok could make a difference.” If you or a community member you know is worried about the situation and needs help or someone to talk to, there are many organisations providing assistance. On Saturday 20 February, Level Crossing Removal Project crews said goodbye to the old boom gates. Prior to its removal, more than 23,000 vehicles travelled through this level crossing each day, where the boom gates held up traffic for a third of the morning peak. “The road bridge opened in December and what a difference it has made to the 23,000 ve-

hicles no longer stopping at the gates in wait,” Bass MP Jordan Crugnale said. “It is hard to visualise the original road already.” The new community open space under the Cardinia Road bridge set to open to the public by mid 2021. The Cardinia Road level crossing removal is part of the State Government’s $15 billion investment in projects to improve the Pakenham line.

Backing for businesses By Mikayla Van Loon Berwick and Beaconsfield businesses and consumers are being encouraged to take part in a new initiative to buy and supply locally. The Berwick and Beaconsfield Chamber of Commerce has received a $10,000 grant from the Department of Jobs, Precincts and Regions to support local business. The Chamber met on Monday night, 22 February, to introduce the initiative to the community. “[It is] a local first idea where you would basically incentivise local residents to shop locally first and you’d do so by the businesses offering specials, providing rewards, incentives and discounts and so forth,” Chamber President Tammy Lobato said. There are two components to the initiative. The first to get local residents to buy locally, either for the first time or to have them return more frequently. The second component is to get local businesses to use other local businesses as suppliers or providers of services and products. This will be facilitated by the Chamber’s website, where businesses can post a request for a product or service and suppliers can respond with cost, delivery and product details. To simplify the process for customers, the

Chamber has also invested in QR code technology. After the frequent use of QR codes over the last year, Ms Lobato said the Chamber hopes this will make it easier for the community to scan and view the discounts or rewards on offer which will be customisable to each business. Ms Lobato said Covid-19 had a “significant impact on everything about business” and herself and other business owners established the Chamber of Commerce to be a voice for businesses during a troubling year. “I think people have been hesitant to spend up until now but I think it’s coming back a bit now but the whole fear associated with that period has meant that people have changed their spending habits. “So what we’re trying to do is encourage them to come back out locally and to spend where they live and I guess in doing so, reactivate the community,” Ms Lobato said. The program will be up and running in the next month and will be ongoing. Walk for the cord appeal By Danielle Kutchel Members of the Inner Wheel Club of Narre Warren are limbering up to walk for a good cause this week, raising funds to support cord blood research. Around 30 walkers have registered to take part in the ‘Sean’s Two for Ten’ walkathon at Cranbourne Botanic Gardens on Friday 26 February, contributing much-need funds to a promising area of medical research. The walkathon is part of Inner Wheel Australia’s ongoing national project. Walkers are asked to walk 2km and donate $10 to the cause, which has saved many children’s lives over the years - including that of Sean, the ambassador for Two for Ten. When Sean was just one-year-old, he was diagnosed with a rare genetic disease called Severe Combined Immunodeficiency - that is, he was born without an immune system. After a worldwide search for a donor, Sean was injected with 30mL of cord blood that saved his life. He’s now a healthy and thriving nine-yearold, thanks to that fateful donation. Inner Wheel has been supporting cord blood research as its national project for 10 years and over that time has raised $3 million. Each year at the Inner Wheel National Con-

ference, the organisation awards grants to research teams working in the area. Linda Wallace, vice president of the Inner Wheel Club of Narre Warren, said there is currently ongoing research into using stem cells to treat childhood cancers, cerebral palsy and, more recently, severe Covid. The Cranbourne Botanic Gardens was chosen as the perfect setting for their walkathon as it offers an easy and accessible scenic walk for all ages, and those who are unable to walk around the garden are able to take the garden tour bus instead. Walkers will wear red t-shirts and red caps in support of the cause. Anyone who wishes to get involved can contact Ms Wallace on lwal9951@bigpond.net. au or 0466 774 714. Clubs urged to ‘Get set, go!’ on sporting grants Sports clubs across Cranbourne are being urged to apply for a share of millions of dollars in funding available to buy equipment and uniforms, boost administrative skills and improve operations. Cranbourne MP Pauline Richards has announced applications are open for the State Government’s 2020-21 Sporting Club Grants Program. The grants provide clubs up to $1000 for new uniforms and equipment, up to $5000 for training coaches, officials and volunteers, up to $5000 to improve club operational effectiveness and up to $5000 to help sports get back on their feet after the pandemic. They will help people of all ages and abilities take part in grassroots sport, no matter where they live and are a great boost for clubs who are looking to get back on track following Covid-19 restrictions. The annual Pink Stumps Night will be held from 6pm on Friday 26 February at the Pearcedale Cricket Ground, with the mums, sisters, wives and girlfriends of players - or any other lady who wishes to be involved - joining together for a friendly T20 game of cricket and a variety of fundraising activities. A silent auction will see some exciting prizes raffled off, as well as an iPod shuffle with the chance to win $100. All money raised on the night will go towards the McGrath Foundation.

This is the third year of the fundraiser; in 2020, the club raised over $2000 for the foundation, and committee member Renae said the ladies hope to raise a similar amount this year. “I think everyone knows someone who’s had breast cancer,” she said, explaining the impact the funds will have on breast cancer support and research. In Tyson’s memory By sports editor Russell Bennett “He never wanted to be a burden to anyone, but if only he knew we never thought of him that way and we would have done absolutely anything for him. We don’t want anyone to go through what we’ve had to. It’s just so important that people know to talk, about anything.” That is the message Tyson Bale’s elder sister Sharni wishes she never had to experience first-hand. Her baby brother was the shy, quiet type around those he didn’t know well. But he was the compassionate, loving, energetic life of the party around those he did. And on the field... boy, was he one hell of a warrior. What he lacked in height, he more than made up for in ferocity, undeniable matchwinning skill, and an unflinching attack on the contest. Tyson, still only 24, passed away suddenly just over six months ago - tearing the heart out of the local community. And in a time shrouded by the uncertainty of the Covid-19 pandemic, and the distance and isolation that came with it, so many were unable to say goodbye. But that will change next month, as Tyson’s former clubs - Buln Buln and the Warragul Industrials - come together for the Tyson Bale Memorial Game on 27 March at Western Park. It will mark the coming together of not only his closest friends and family, but his former club mates, and those desperate to see anyone experiencing their own mental health battles step forward and open up. “We’re all dealing with the same situation, so it’s great that everyone can lean on each other for that bit of support,” Sharni explained. “All the boys, all of Tyson’s mates, have been great with Dad - they still go down and have a few beers in the shed with him, just like they would in the past, just to make sure he’s ok. “We never, ever saw it coming. We knew Tyson was struggling, but never for a minute did we think this would happen. We’re all wondering what we missed. It’s just horrible, it honestly is. “It’s so important to talk to someone when you’re struggling. Tys was the baby of our family so he kept to himself and he was actually quite an emotional person. He never wanted to be a burden to anyone, but if only he knew we never thought of him that way and we would have done absolutely anything for him.” Mindfull Aus will hold next month’s memorial game alongside both the Industrials and Buln Buln, with key figures from all three spearheading the initiative. “With everything that’s happened, Dad is the biggest advocate for encouraging people 22 STAR NEWS

to open up about anything,” Sharni said. “He’s always asking people if they’re ok, and he’s trying to start conversations - and that’s what Mindfull is all about, making everyone aware of just how important it is to talk.” Matt Runnalls is a multiple premiershipwinning midfielder from his time at a number of clubs in the local area. His is a story that’s far from uncommon. In fact, it comes from a situation that’s so eerily similar to that faced by thousands of people across the country. But yet it’s one so often left alone - left unspoken under the guise of a 20-somethingyear-old’s perceived cloak of invincibility, or the fear or awkwardness of opening up. Since he was 17, he’s battled severe anxiety and depression, which led to several suicide attempts. He’s also lost seven close mates who were facing their own mental health battles and couldn’t find a way through the darkness. So Matt refuses to shy away from his battle. He embraces it and hits people right between the eyes with his cold, hard, truth. It even led to him starting his own foundation, and now a registered mental health charity, Mindfull Aus. “For us at Mindfull Aus, to be able to do something like this and host this game with the collaborative help and support of both the Buln and Warragul Industrials football clubs is really important for the community,” Matt explained. “Tyson passed away in a really challenging time for a lot of people during Covid, and a lot of people weren’t able to actually give him a proper farewell and celebrate his life the way he deserved to be remembered. “It’s important we don’t remember him for his struggle. It’s important we remember him for the massive positive impact he made on everyone he touched and came into contact with, both on and off the footy field. It only makes sense for us to welcome the new footy season in a way that meant the world to Tyson. “A massive contributing factor to the reason a lot of people have struggled through this really tough time of physical distancing and isolation is not having those outlets to be, to love, to belong, and to feel a sense of connection to other people. Our footy and sporting communities provide that for so many people. “A lot of us go through these struggles because we believe this narrative about ourselves that just isn’t true. On March the 27th, you’re going to see just how many people did love Tys and did appreciate him. These events can act as a way of helping other people understand that, so that they can choose to be here tomorrow - no matter how dark, painful, or difficult the situation may be. “Every single person, as they drive through the gates, is going to see one thing that’s symbolic throughout the whole day, and that’s the colour green - the conversation starter and the colour for mental health awareness.

They were also great mates of Tyson’s. Together, they’ve raised thousands of dollars for Mindfull’s mental health cause, and they’re also key pillars behind next months’ memorial game. “This game has been discussed since Tyson passed,” Troy explained. “All we (the Dusties boys) wanted to do was play a game for him as I feel we didn’t get to give him the respect that he deserved. “After I put my hand up to help raise awareness and funds for Mindfull Aus, I thought I could tie all this up with the big game for Tyson. So I’ve got a Buckets Mega Raffle going, which will be drawn after the game. I want the two clubs to have a great day, celebrate the life of Tyson Bale and make sure we don’t have to organise one of these games again is it’s been one of the hardest things I’ve had to do. “How? Speak up if you’re feeling down. I’ve recently tried a few different councillors and I have found one that is helping a lot. The other thing is to be open to listening to others speak - no more “you’ll be right mate”. Let’s get conversations going and be comfortable in talking about your feelings.” Jack said this initiative means everything to those who were lucky enough to be part of Tyson’s life. “This memorial match gives us an opportunity to play for Tys one last time and I know how much that means to both clubs,” he said. “I feel it’s fitting that Buln is to wear his junior number of 17, where he was always a superstar, and for the Dusties to wear number 1, which was his senior number - where he was always amongst the best. “Due to the lockdown last year no one could get together after the funeral to give him the send-off he deserved. This match will hopefully give everyone a chance to remember the champion Tys was, both on and off the field. Quick to draw key votes By Russell Bennett Just 2313 votes - that was the difference between Pakenham’s own Mr Quickie getting a guaranteed start in the $5 million All-Star Mile next month, or having to rely on a wildcard berth. The first Group 1 winner to be trained out of Sportsbet Pakenham in Tynong, the Phillip Stokes gelding made a late charge to claim the 10th and final guaranteed start after a frenetic final 48 hours of voting. The 10 highest vote-getters receive automatic entry into the race, and of the 10 horses voted in this year, only Mr Quickie has previously contested an All-Star Mile race. He ran ninth in the 2020 running of the race at Caulfield, beaten by just over three-and-ahalf lengths by Regal Power after finishing seventh in the public voting. This time around, the third running of the world’s richest mile race will take place at Moonee Valley. Mr Quickie finished with 6168 public votes, just 2313 ahead of the Kris Lees-trained Mugatoo. A record 147,830 validated votes were received for this year’s All-Star Mile, up from 135,097 last year, and 139,427 for the inaugural running of the race in 2019. South Australian star Arcadia Queen topped this year’s vote-getters with 15,105 votes, from Behemoth (14,699) and Kiwi mare Probabeel (14,503). The winners of this year’s race on 13 March will walk away with a cool $2.25 million. Mr Quickie rapidly built up a booming following throughout Gippsland and the southeast last year as he prepared for his first crack at the big race. Whole communities, cities, and even states rally behind horses from across Australia and New Zealand in the race to secure a sport in the final field for the 1600-metre showdown. Last year, in a huge boost to the Mr Quickie campaign, legendary hoop Damien Oliver took the ride for the event. In-demand star Jamie Kah piloted Mr Quickie to third in the Futurity Stakes at Caulfield on Saturday, behind Probabeel and Arcadia Queen but ahead of the likes of Behemoth. Greg Carpenter, Racing Victoria’s executive general manager of racing, said recently: “We are absolutely delighted with the record voting numbers for The All-Star Mile 2021. And this Saturday night she’ll be looking to back it up when with Fernando Cazz’s brother, Fernando Bluey, to line up in the $429,000 Group 1 Australian Cup Final (525 metres), also at The Meadows. Fernando Bluey made it eight wins from his past nine starts (he has won 17 from 30 overall) when winning an Australian Cup heat last Saturday, and he is one of the main chances in the final despite drawing box 6, mostly because of his phenomenal early speed. “I don’t think it really matters where he is drawn because he has such brilliant box manners,” Kayla said.
