Navigating the first step into school is a milestone that can often be accompanied by many uncertainties. To support incoming Prep students for the new year, Heritage College offers a ‘Step into Prep’ pathway for families. The program delivers a helpful information session in a relaxed environment where families can meet the Prep teachers and have plenty of time for questions and answers. As part of the Step into Prep pathway, Orientation Days run throughout Semester 2. Orientation days allow incoming Prep students to view the classroom spaces, meet their teacher and classmates and familiarise themselves with learning areas and activities. Fun things to do together An independent school for girls in the UK has come up with a bucket list of fun and outdoor activities for children to tick off before they turn 5. Burgess Hill Girls in West Sussex developed a list of 50 things for girls to do to get them outside, build their curiosity and love of nature, and get them away from their screens. It follows research showing that many preschoolers are spending less and less time in nature. Some of the things to do include hunt for worms or fly a kite. The school, for girls aged 2.5 to 18, has made headlines around the world with the novel idea. Headteacher Liz Laybourn told Danielle Galvin they know young children love to play on their parent’s phones, iPads and tablets, and have even mastered the “swipe” action early on. “In the same vein, playing and exploring seems to be a thing of the past and children are not developing some of the most important life skills - resilience, ability to failure, taking risks, adaptability, being comfortable in the environment and trying things that they have never been encouraged to do,” she explained. “It was relatively easy to think of the 50 things, as many we had ourselves done as young children, and then we thought about the types of activities we now encourage our nursery pupils to do. “Our focus as a school is on outdoor learning and allowing the pupils to try real live things. “Education is best when it is alive.” Ms Laybourn explained while they weren’t
necessarily witnessing young children being addicted to screens, it’s an ongoing issue for both parents and educators. “Not necessarily screen addiction but a definite lack of dexterity in their motor skills due to being used to swiping screens rather than using keyboard skills,” she said. “Phones and tablets are an easy option to keep children active when out for dinner or when parents are busy. “Once they get a taste of it they just want more and more. It can be a real challenge for parents.” The school posted the challenge with a graphic on their website in January, encouraging parents to take part and share their successes. “We have created this list to encourage girls to be bold and curious from a young age and challenge themselves to try new activities.” “It is specifically targeted at girls of preschool age to help them learn essential skills before they start their first year of school.” The list encourages girls to mix potions, make slime and mud pies, and gaze up at the stars. Although there’s one activity Ms Laybourn had to explain - egg rolling. “Egg rolling is when the children paint hard boiled eggs - make them truly pretty and individual and then find a really steep hill to roll them down,” she said. “A tradition in some areas of the country but great fun!”

Pakenham Primary School The staff, parents and students of Pakenham Primary School were very excited to attend their very first day of learning for 2021. The whole school community were really grateful that families were allowed onsite to walk their children down to their Learning Communities and meet our staff and other families in person. Despite the rain, there were lots of smiling faces and first day photos being taken. Our students looked so grown up in their new uniforms. The staff and students had a wonderful day and enjoyed getting to know each other. So much fun was had by all during their first day. The students made many new friends and learnt all about being a student at Pakenham Primary School. Students demonstrated our school expectations of ‘Be a Learner’, ‘Be Respectful’ and ‘Be Safe’. We are looking forward to watching our students grow and learn over the coming year. 2021 is shaping up to be a great year, with lots of exciting new learning initiatives and activities planned for our students.

Exciting future at schools Building works are steaming ahead at Crest Education with both Hillcrest Christian College and Rivercrest Christian College having just completed major projects, with more to come in 2022. Hillcrest Christian College Primary students are enjoying the College’s new, stateof-the-art Multi-Purpose Centre, completed in December 2020. Complete with kitchen, portable stage and integrated sound system, this modern facility will enable primary-aged students to engage in sport and physical activity in all weather conditions ensuring students stay healthy and active. “This space will shelter us from the hot sun and protect us in winter from the rain and the cold” says Leanne Dube, Hillcrest Primary Sport Coordinator. Surrounding the new Multi-Purpose Centre will be a high-quality grass field, which is currently being constructed. Students can look forward to utilizing this later this year. ‘The best day of my life’

Excitement, joy, a few tears and a sense of adventure were some of the features of the first day for Foundation students at St Clare’s Catholic Primary School in Officer. The students were welcomed by the Principal, Ms Helen Staindl, as they walked along the red carpet and under the archway of balloons. Each student was presented with a medal of St Clare as a reminder of the school namesake and charism. This is one of the mementoes that children keep of their time in primary school. The 72 Foundation students were also presented with a book from their Year 6 buddies and shared the opportunity to read together. One Foundation boy proclaimed his first day at school as ‘The best day of my life’. St Clare’s School continued to grow this year and now has an enrolment of over 520 students. One of the major developments for 2021 is substantial landscape works to incorporate further sport fields and playgrounds. St Clare’s continues to go from strength to strength. As part of the parish of St Patrick’s in Pakenham, the school is on site with the Early Learning Centre and the Officer campus of St Francis Xavier College. This provides a seamless transition from early childhood to secondary education with state-of-the-art facilities. Each learning space has been designed by education award-winning architects to provide a rich environment conducive to relevant, meaningful learning. Areas are spacious and well-resourced so as to meet the diverse needs of all learners. Helen Staindl, our Principal, was born and raised in Gippsland and has been a Principal in Stratford, Melbourne, Geelong and now at St Clare’s Catholic Primary School in Officer. She has studied both internationally and locally and has Masters Degrees in Theology and Education as well as further degrees in Religious Education and Administration. Helen was a member of the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority Board for many years and has broad experience in the Catholic and Private sectors and with the International Baccalaureate Program. When not at school, Helen performs and tours with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra Chorus and has sung at the MCG Grand Final, the Commonwealth Games, the Olympics and with celebrities including John Farnham.

work towards fixing the problem and finding the culprits. “Out of all the bad things that can happen in the community, there are some wonderful people out there who are generous and giving and it’s wonderful to see, despite the bad stuff,” he said. Since posting about the latest robbery on the club’s Facebook page on Tuesday 2 February, Mr Anning said that many people had come forward to offer donations and supplies for ‘pink ladies day’, to make up for the stolen vodka. “It’s important to remember that there are an enormous amount of good people out there, it’s really heart warming,” he said. Although the robbery had come as yet another low blow, Mr Anning said that the club would ensure there were still plenty of pink drinks to go around at the pink ladies day, being held on Saturday 13 February. The event is set to begin at 3pm at Toomuc Reserve, Oval 2 in Pakenham where there will be a large marquee set up with socially distanced seating to view the cricket and enjoy some food and drinks.

For the third time in 14 days, members of the Pakenham Cricket Club have found their clubrooms ransacked by thieves, with charity supplies being stolen in the most recent attack, leaving the club “frustrated” and “disappointed”. It is believed that the most recent robbery occurred in the early hours of Monday 1 February, when the thieves broke in, damaging external and internal doors before stealing 12 one litre bottles of vodka. This vodka was bought by the club in order to make their famous ‘pink drinks’ at an upcoming fundraiser, aiming to raise money for the Jane McGrath Foundation on their annual Pink Ladies Day. Club president Phil Anning said he was shattered that thieves had been targeting their clubrooms so often, particularly as what was stolen was going towards a good cause. “It’s extremely disappointing and frustrating that this has happened again,” Mr Anning said. “I estimate that nearly $600 worth of stock has been stolen, and this will have a direct impact on what we can make for the McGrath Foundation.” Mr Anning noted that, unfortunately, their club wasn’t the only one to be struck by thieves in recent weeks either. “I know the Pakenham Upper Cricket Club has also been broken into recently,” Mr Anning said. “It’s unfortunately becoming a common thread in the area. “All our sporting clubs are not for profit organisations and for this to happen, it just impacts everyone. Jurgens locked up - again By Danielle Kutchel Employees of caravan manufacturer Jurgens have again been locked out of the factory after an alleged dispute between the company and its landlord. A document taped to the company’s fence on Sharnet Circuit, Pakenham, announced that the landlord has repossessed the property. Prior to this, according to the document, the landlord had served a Notice to Quit on Jurgens, requiring the company to leave the premises on or before 31 January 2021. The document stated that Jurgens failed to comply with the notice. But the manufacturer has hit back via a statement on its website and Facebook page, saying the company was relocating. “We are committed to continue manufacturing in Australia and will be moving to new premises to support this endeavour,“ the statement reads. The statement also elaborated on the dispute with the company’s landlord. According to Jurgens owner Paul Kyriacou, the landlord had agreed in writing to a rental discount, which Jurgens never received. Jurgens had fallen into arrears on its rent during Victoria’s Covid lockdowns. Jurgens had contacted the landlord in November 2020 to discuss how to settle the arrears, and alleges that the landlord never responded. “We have paid all rent on time since we opened after the Covid-19 lockdown in Victoria,“ the statement said. Jurgens promised to “defend our staff, customers and our brand“ and said it would release further details about the relocation “at the earliest opportunity“. When Star News visited on Tuesday 2 February, a security guard at the gate said he had been told not to comment.
The gates are locked at Jurgens’ Pakenham site. A former employee was also seen visiting the site. Star News Group was contacted by a person who claimed that workers were not told of the new development in the ongoing Jurgens saga, and were shocked to find themselves locked out. It’s not the first time employees have been locked out of the site. On 18 March 2019, employees arrived at work to find a lease termination sign posted on the locked front gates and security guarding the premises. At the time, employees said they had been left in the dark about the company’s financial situation. Later in 2019, employees enlisted the support of the Australian Workers Union, after Jurgens allegedly failed to pay JobKeeper entitlements to staff. The union also claimed that Jurgens had not paid superannuation payments for over a year. Jurgens responded at the time, saying that financial woes had impacted the superannua-
The deserted factory. tion payments but the company would resolve the issue by catching employees up on their super. In an article published in Caravancampingsales in late 2018, company owner Paul Kyriacou admitted there had been “significant speculation about the future of Jurgens Australia” following its South African branch, which can trace its DNA back 60 years, being placed into provisional liquidation. The Pretoria High Court in South Africa placed Jurgens Ci Pty Ltd in provisional liquidation and called on all interested parties “to show cause on or before 6 February 2019 why the respondent (Jurgens) should not be placed in final liquidation ... ” Paul Kyriacou was reported telling Jurgens Australia staff that the provisional liquidation was “old news“. “We are in negotiations regarding this issue and I do not foresee Jurgens going into final liquidation,” he’d said at the time. Jurgens Ci (Pty) Ltd is one of the largest caravan manufacturers in the southern hemisphere and has built more than 100,000 caravans since 1952.

School gets its start By Mitchell Clarke The doors of Pakenham’s newest secondary college have officially opened, with 120 Year 7 students officially beginning their secondary school journey. Education Minister James Merlino joined Bass MP Jordan Crugnale on Friday 29 January to officially open Edenbrook Secondary College. The government officials met with school principal Johanna Walker and community representatives for a tour of the school. “It feels like only yesterday I was opening John Henry Primary School, so to be back here opening Edenbrook Secondary College is just great,” Mr Merlino told the Gazette. “You can immediately tell the students are engaged.” He credited the design and build of Edenbrook, stating: “I love it. The quality of the finish, the natural colours, the openness, it’s just amazing.” The Minister said the completed project was a “prime example” of the State Government’s school building boom across Victoria. Edenbrook is one of 14 new government schools to open across Victoria in 2021. A new primary school, Orchard Park, also opened in Officer’s Timbertop estate. “Growth is one of the major factors in terms of where we invest - whether it’s upgrading a school, expanding a school or building a new school,” Mr Merlino said.

I was at Ramleigh Park primary school (in Clyde North) and on day one we had 460 primary school kids on the first day at a brand new school. “Schools are the best way that you create a sense of community and we’re building them right across the state and we’re building them where there is enrolment demand, like here in Pakenham.” In September last year, frustrated prospective parents urged the Education Department to rezone the “ridiculous” boundary after

many families, who deliberately bought property near the site, were rejected from enrolling. “We work very closely with the Victorian School Building Authority to make sure that, as the population grows, we‘re providing the facilities to meet that demand and we’ll keep doing that,” Mr Merlino said, when questioned by the Gazette about zoning concerns. “There’s more that we need to do, whether it’s future stages for Edenbrook or upgrades for other schools. Families love this area and the demand is there and we’re investing to make sure that we keep up with that demand.”

The first stage of the school build, which has been fully funded, caters for a maximum enrolment of 500 students. At the completion of future stages, the buildings will cater for a maximum 1200 student enrolment. Bass MP Jordan Crugnale said she was committed to fighting for Pakenham and the greater Cardinia community. She said every child deserves access to a great local school close to home. “That is why, as our community grows, we need to open new schools just like Edenbrook Secondary College,” Ms Crugnale said. “This is a brilliant facility and I’m so proud to have been a part of the journey. We committed to building the school and here it is two years later. “It just looks amazing. It almost looks like a tertiary institute. Seetali’s solar farm A solar powered farm created by Beaconhills College graduate Seetali Mack has earned selection for Top Designs, part of the VCE Season of Excellence. Seetali completed the farm design last year in her Systems Engineering subject. Its features include solar panels that track the sun and an automated water trough. Seetali and her Systems Engineering teach-
er Peter Van Waart, from the College’s Pakenham Campus, were thrilled to hear of the project’s selection. “At first I was shocked and didn’t believe it,” Seetali said. “2020 had just been a terrible year, so for something like this to come out of it was amazing.” She said while Systems Engineering was traditionally a male-dominated subject, she
strongly encouraged other girls to study it. “This subject was just heaps of fun as I really enjoyed working with other people on our projects - everyone was really supportive.” Seetali is also keen participant in the performing arts, and enjoyed playing and creating music with other students at Beaconhills. This year she will study a Bachelor of Music Industry at the Box Hill Institute.
Cardinia Shire Council has unveiled its new Covid-19 Community Recovery Committee. The committee, chaired by Officer Ward councillor Tammy Radford, will work together towards addressing the many mental health and social isolation issues as well as employment and financial insecurity brought about by the pandemic. The first committee meeting was held on Tuesday 19 January, and the council say the group will continue to meet regularly. Cardinia Shire mayor Brett Owen said the committee will work towards supporting community wellbeing and advocating community needs and priorities. “A community led recovery is a strong recovery because the community is empowered to influence decision making and build community resilience,” Cr Owen said. Cr Radford said she was looking forward to working towards Cardinia’s Covid-19 recovery and “sharing the work of the committee” in the coming months. “The committee members bring a wealth of experience and different perspectives to the table to ensure a variety of voices are heard as we continue to experience the impacts of this pandemic,” she said. Sweet relief for busting By Danielle Kutchel Desperate visitors to Rotary Park in Toomuc Creek Reserve will no longer need to cross their legs, thanks to the opening of a new toilet block. Cardinia Shire Council mayor Councillor Brett Owen joined Central Ward Councillor Collin Ross, La Trobe MP Jason Wood MP and members of Pakenham Rotary Club on Thursday 28 January to open the new facility which contains two accessible toilet cubicles equipped with automated functions. The new toilets, located near the BBQ shelter, feature graffiti and vandal-resistant surfaces and are universal gender. Local children were consulted in the selection of the colour scheme. The vibrant blue and yellow facility echoes the colours of Rotary International and Cardinia Shire. The opening marks the end of a years-long wait for park users, and Cr Owen acknowledged the ongoing work of the Pakenham Rotary Club in advocating for the facility. “We are pleased to officially open this purpose-built facility here at one of the most popular parks in Cardinia Shire,” Cr Owen said. “This toilet facility will not only be important for our local families but also the Pakenham Parkrun participants and those users of the soon to be completed off-leash dog park which is part of the wider reserve. “The Rotary Club of Pakenham has worked hard to bring the project to fruition with the help of Cardinia Shire and the Australian Government. We congratulate them on their great community initiative,” Cr Owen said. “It’s another great example of what can be achieved when all levels of government work together.” The Rotary Club of Pakenham was successful in obtaining $180,000 in funding from the Australian Government with Cardinia Shire
Cr Collin Ross, Mayor Brett Owen, Jason Wood MP and Geoff Young open the toilet block. Council contributing in excess of $30,000 and the Pakenham Rotary Club contributing $9,995 to complete this project. Geoff Young, president of Rotary Pakenham, said members had worked hard to see the project through. He signalled that the Rotary Club would continue developing the area and installing new amenities for park users. Stuart Brady, sales manager of WC Innovations, said the toilet block would be thoroughly cleaned six days a week, including every surface.
He added that users are expected to grow now that school is back, and with footy starting soon. Since its soft opening, the toilet block has been accessed by over 900 users already - underscoring just how vital it is to park users. Federal Member for La Trobe, Jason Wood MP said the new public toilet facilities would benefit all visitors to Rotary Park for years to come. “This was an election commitment of mine in 2019. I am so pleased to see it completed which also ensured workers have their jobs
during the Covid-19 crisis. “This is another great example of passionate volunteers in our community working in partnership with different levels of government to enhance the Cardinia Shire community,” Mr Wood said. Central Ward Councillor Collin Ross said the addition of this new toilet facility would make Rotary Park even better. “This investment means families can enjoy the park more, and spend longer here at this great reserve. This is a welcome win for our community,” Cr Ross said.

IN BRIEF A sobering night A motorist who allegedly blew four times the legal limit was apprehended by witnesses following a minor collision in Officer. Cardinia Highway Patrol were called to the Princes Highway at about 9pm on Sunday 31 January, after members of the public called 000 following the crash. Police say witnesses stopped to assist at the scene and could tell the male driver was under the influence of alcohol and prevented the man from driving away. The 23-year-old man from Narre Warren was required to undergo a roadside breath test returning a positive result. A further evidentiary test allegedly returned a result of 0.209. The man’s vehicle was immediately impounded for a period of 30 days at a cost of $895. Due to the driver’s level of intoxication he got a ’one way’ trip to the police cells to sober up. The man can expect a summons to appear at court for DUI and drink driving.

Fatal combination The antics of a speeding, alcohol affected Pplater have left police shaking their heads and asking the question ’when are people going to learn?’ Made more frustrating for police was the fact the driver in question was nabbed travelling on a wet road, near the same location as last week’s fatal collision outside Gumbuya World. Casey Highway Patrol averted the potential tragedy when they caught the BMW allegedly travelling at 125km/h on the Princes Highway in Tynong North on Saturday 30 January. The 32-year-old driver allegedly recorded a breath alcohol reading of 0.161. Her licence was immediately suspended for 12 months and her vehicle was impounded for 30 days. She will face a Magistrates court at a later date.
Slow down and keep safe School is back and police are again reminding motorists to slow down and adhere to the 40km/h school speed zones. The speed zones are in place daily between 8-9:30am and 2:30-4pm. Officers will be patrolling school zones at these times to ensure drivers are sticking to the reduced speed. I do recall the overriding reason you noted was the cost to all Casey ratepayers to relocate it however you forgot one thing. I urged you on numerous occasions to ask council to request additional funding contributions from the developer or as a second option propose a relocation of the roundabout to Domain Drive, a very dangerous intersection that will have to be upgraded anyway. Yes Rex you might say now what was the community so angry about and it looks great now. Let me remind you it was only after a very long and bitter battle funded by the community that ended up in VCAT that secured the full reinstated entry features we see and enjoy today.

Target will shut its doors in Pakenham. It’s understood Coles and Good Neighbour Pharmacy will continue to trade throughout the renovations. Pakenham Place centre manager Andy Yusuf said the new look shopping precinct would give the growing suburb a town centre again. “I think it’ll be amazing for the area. The food offer and the new shops that we are planning will just reinvigorate Pakenahm place completely,” Mr Yusuf said. “From what I’ve been told, 20-30 years ago, this was the hub of Pakenham but it’s gone down a bit since. One of Pakenham’s original tenants will close in June to make way for a new Aldi supermarket. After months of speculation, Target has officially confirmed to the Gazette their store in the Pakenham Place shopping centre will shut down. “We want to thank our Pakenham team, the local community and all of our customers for shopping with us over the years and hope they will consider visiting us online,” a Target spokeswoman said. The move will mean around 53 crew members will be without a job, but the retail giant has vowed to work with staff on redeployment opportunities. “Our focus is on supporting our team through this time as we work through achieving their desired outcomes for the future whether that is in suitable redeployment within other Wesfarmers businesses as well as with other employers in town or accessing their entitlements for any permanent team members,” the spokeswoman added. The Gazette understands Target had been negotiating rents and lease with the shopping centre’s new landlord for some time. The Pakenham Place shopping centre is preparing to undergo a drastic makeover, with construction slated to begin in July. It means traders, including Toy World, will be required to relocate by June. It’s hoped construction will be finished before April 2022.

A GoFundMe page has been launched for a “hero” dad who was savagely assaulted with a tomahawk after rushing to the aid of his distressed neighbour in Cranbourne North. Russell Irwin, 41, heard his terrified neighbour’s screams for help after a group of three armed men broke into her Lindenow Court property just after 7pm on Monday night, 1 February. Without hesitation, the single father
of three children, aged eight, nine and 13, jumped into action, launching over his fence and approaching the armed thugs, who had just ransacked a bedroom. Police say one of the thugs used a weapon to strike Mr Irwin on the head before the group, believed to be armed with a tomahawk, rifle and baseball bat, fled on foot. The occupants of the house, who are understood to have known the offenders, were not injured.

A paramedic provides first aid on scene. A bloodied and bruised Mr Irwin suffered a fractured skull, seven lacerations to the head, a puncture wound to the back of his thigh and cuts and bruises on his back. Mr Irwin’s cousin, Bree Martin, told Star News he managed to climb back over the fence before attempting to stop the offenders. “One of the offenders pulled out a rifle and threatened him with that,” she said. “At this point Russell’s blood was boiling. He’d just gone from fighting two of the attackers and had tried to rip their balaclavas off so he could see them before he was struck by the third. “I know if they didn’t have weapons, they

He wouldn’t have let them and instead they’d be running away from him.” She said Mr Irwin was extremely lucky to walk away with non-life threatening injuries. “Someone’s life could’ve ended. He was very, very lucky. If it wasn’t for his size and build, if it was a smaller male, it could have ended differently,” she explained. “Crime in this area is just out of control. You see so much of it happening and you think it’ll never happen to someone you know, so when it does, it’s shocking. As a family we all look after each other and we’re very close.” Ms Martin said the incident had highlight-

ed the kind of man her cousin is. “Russell would rather cop the blow instead of a woman. He wouldn’t look at it like he’s a hero,” she said. “I’ve always looked up to my cousins. If I’ve ever been in trouble, I’m the first to ring my cousins and they’re always there. They would literally do anything for anyone.” Mr Irwin’s other cousin, Kara, said he had shown “unsung bravery and willingness to sacrifice himself in order to save another”. “There is not enough men in this world like him, those whose first instinct is to protect his fellow man,” she said.
“This man has not voluntarily signed up and vowed to protect others like the police, a soldier, a firefighter. This man is a rarity in today’s society and if this world was filled with men like him, what a beautiful world it would be.” Mr Irwin, who is a boilermaker, is expected to be out of work for some time. Money raised from the GoFundMe will go towards medical bills and everyday expenses. In just under 24 hours, more than $6000 had been raised. Fresh faces needed They’re the dedicated group rallying for the ratepayers of Officer, but the Officer and District Community Association are on the hunt for fresh face. The Association, which has been in existence for many years, would like to bring a youth voice to their team. With Officer growing at an extremely fast rate, and more families moving in everyday,

Cardinia Shire Council is running free facility tours as it gets ready to open the doors at James Bathe Community and Sports Hub in Pakenham. The one-hour tours will take place on Thursday 18 February at 10am, 11am and 12.30pm. The tours will give community groups, not-for-profit organisations and businesses the chance to see the facilities and community rooms available for hire for ongoing community services and activities. Kids across the City of Casey have made their long awaited return to the classroom, in what is shaping up to be a better year than the last. With many hopeful that at home learning will remain a thing of the past, this year’s Prep students have began their studies the traditional way - from a classroom. It may take two to tango, but it doesn’t matter whether you’re alone or with a partner for prima Russian dancer Ninelle Salem’s tango classes, where everyone is invited to come down, slip on their dancing shoes and learn the ‘dance of love’. Ms Salem will be sharing her vast dancing experience in a special series of classes run on Monday nights at the Narre Warren Bowls Club, in a collaboration with Carlos Argentina, founder of Tango Gippsland. Having started her dancing journey as a professional ballerina in Russia, Ms Salem is no stranger to the stage and has studied and performed a range of different dances all over the world. After immigrating to Australia in the late 1990’s, Ms Salem opened up her own pilates studio and fell in love with tango, going on to travel and teach others the art of the dance. Mr Argentina said that Ms Salem’s vast “technical skills” made her an incredibly talented teacher and he encouraged people of all ages and abilities to come down and try a class, stating that “if you can walk, you can tango”. “Ms Salem teaches the technique which is the foundation of dance,” Mr Argentina said. “Her peers and students hold her in very high regard and after a few weeks of classes, you too will be on the road to being addicted to tango.” The 90 minute classes are running every week at 7pm on Mondays at the Narre Warren Bowls Club, with beginners receiving their first class for free. Ms Salem will be teaching a range of core tango skills, including how to both lead and follow, balance, weight change, respect and axis and some improvisation as well. Mr Argentina said that although he would love to be running the classes himself, he was very excited to work with Ms Salem and is looking forward to enjoying the classes with the local community. “The beauty of tango is that you can go anywhere in the world and dance,” Mr Argentina said. “Even though you might not speak the language of that country, you can have a dance with a stranger. Tango is just a language of its own.”

Club in good hands
Club Treasurer Lisa Mckenzie Our new treasurer is Lisa Mckenzie who hasn’t stopped working hard behind the scenes since the beginning of 2020, keeping the financial side up-to-date for the club. Lisa has set a professional standard in this role that can be very demanding for the Junior Club that any business would be
lucky to have . Lisa also has been with the club for many years from voluntary work, helper, supporting all members within the club and our U/12s to u/16s girls teams.We are very fortunate to have Lisa in this role for 2021. Club Registrar Kylie Camenzuli Kylie Camenzuli needs no introduction. She has been with the PJFC for over 15 years and has done amazing things over the years and hasn’t stopped yet from voluntary work, helper, committee member, supporting all members,teams, team managers and coaches and of course our registrar which is just about a 24 hour operations . We have been very lucky as a club to have had Kylie doing and continuing the role as registrar for 2021. Club Merchandise / Fundraising Laura Kors Laura Kors has done many amazing things for the PJFC over the years being with the club for a long time. Laura along with being a committee member has been running the club’s Merchandise Shop along with fundrais-
ing which has helped the club financially. To this day Laura hasn’t stopped working behind the scenes since 2020. Her hard work has helped set the club for 2021. Her amazing support to all club members,Teams U/12, U/14 and U/16 girls, along with U/17s boys, team managers, coaches and committee. We are lucky as a club to have Laura in this role for 2021. Footy Operations Tom Dalton Tom Dalton has been around the football scene all his life from Junior to Seniors football, Being a life member of the PJFC and being part of the Junior Club for many many years. His hard and continued work for the club continues from supporting all coaches,team managers, players and members. Tom has coached for many years and helped the development of all players from their junior football and senior football to this day. Tom’s vital role for the club consists of working with the AFL SEJ and directing all and any queries and answers needed within the club. We are very fortunate to have Tom continue in this role and support the PJFC. We as the Pakenham Football Club are very lucky and fortunate to have this great group of people in these roles for the our club. To this day with their hard work they are the backbone of the club.

Bounce back With the return to the 2021 school year commencing, the mental and physical wellbeing of children post Covid-19 lockdowns is a concern for many families. Without their tireless behind the scenes work for the Club it would not function smoothly before and during the season. Club Secretary Belinda Haslett Has taken the role on as our new secretary. Belinda has an important role for the club which involves working with the AFL SEJ and communicating all information to the Pakenham Junior Football Club. Belinda has been with the PJFC for many years and has done great things from general volunteer, committee member, team manager for U/17s Boys team along with supporting all members . We look forward to what Belinda will bring to the club as secretary in 2021.

Storm to return to Casey Melbourne Storm will make its long-awaited return to playing in its home state of Victoria when it hosts Newcastle Knights in the club’s only official NRL pre-season trial for 2021 at Casey Fields. The reigning premiers haven’t had the chance to play in front of their home crowd since the corresponding trial last year which attracted more than 6000 fans to the first game played as part of the club’s partnership with the City of Casey. This year, due to Covid restrictions, the crowd for the February 27 clash will be capped at 4500 people with kickoff at the family friendly time of 5.30pm. Storm is guaranteed to field a powerful line-up, featuring the bulk of the team which claimed a memorable 2020 premiership by beating Penrith in the grand final. As a bonus for Storm’s 2021 ticketed members, everyone who has signed on for this season will be able to claim one free trial game ticket during a special members pre-sale that will run until tickets sell out. Entry for Storm non-ticketed members will be just $10 for adults and $5 for children, with general public tickets, available from Ticketmaster from 9am Friday, $20 for adults and $10 for children. Storm has also launched special Casey membership packages which include a ticket for the trial game, ticket for a Storm home game at AAMI Park and a member merchandise item.
The Melbourne Storm are back in Casey for a trial match in February. All memberships are available via melbournestorm.com.au/membership or call 1300 786 767. As well as the Storm v Knights clash, many of the best players in the NRL Victoria competition will be showcased in a special Nines competition to be run as part of day’s activities. The Storm Harmony Nines on the Casey Warriors’ home ground will feature juniors for the first time along with men’s and women’s teams.

They will play a round-robin competition to decide the finalists who will get the honour of playing the curtain-raisers to the NRL pre-season showdown on the main field. The City of Casey and the surrounding areas are a stronghold for Storm members and rugby league fans with seven of Victoria’s local rugby league clubs located in South-East Melbourne. The preliminary matches will be held on two fields with the action getting underway at 9am. Admission to those matches will be free of charge.
“In partnership with City of Casey, February 27 will be a great day for rugby league and Storm in particular as we play a game in front of our home fans for the first time in almost a year,” Storm CEO Justin Rodski said. “We can’t wait to see the Purple Army come together and enjoy seeing their team live after such a long break. “Last year’s trial at Casey was a huge success and we expect it will be another fantastic day in one of the heartlands of the game in Victoria. “I’d also encourage all local league fans to check out the local talent at the Nines before watching what is sure to be an outstanding NRL trial.” City of Casey CEO Glenn Patterson said Council was proud to host the pre-season trial at “our very own leading sporting facility”. “The Nines competition combined with the signature game between Melbourne Storm and the Newcastle Knights is an event not to be missed,” he said. “The opportunity for the winners of the round robin competition that day to play as a curtain raiser to Melbourne Storm is also a fantastic way to demonstrate the amazing pathways that are available in our community, for our younger generations. “I hope to see plenty of our Casey residents get down and check out our local talent, followed by what’s sure to be a very entertaining game that evening.”
A step in the right direction with bubble to burst By Lance Jenkinson The racing ‘bubble’ will burst at Sportsbet Pakenham on Thursday night. The barrier that has restricted jockeys, trainers and horses from interacting with owners, members and the general public will finally come down. For the first time since March, spectators will be able to get up close to the stars of the turf. It will still not be a normal raceday, moreso Covid normal. Those entering the course will need to scan in using QR codes, social distancing will be strictly enforced and allocated seating will remain. Only 1000 people will be allowed at the
course at one time - so the crowds will remain sparse. However, it is a step in the right direction, and Pakenham Racing Club general manager of racing and commercial Wade Calderwood is ecstatic about the latest development. “The bubble comes off!” he said. “When we race next Thursday night, we will have the ability for our owners, members and the public to be allowed to go around the course and they’ll get down to see the horses close up again.” The decision by Racing Victoria to pop the bubble has been long anticipated by everyone in the racing industry. Calderwood sensed “frustration levels of people have raised” the more restrictions on the wider general public were eased.
But Calderwood understands why it has taken so long for the bubble to end. “It’s taken the racing industry quite a bit of time to come to this,” he said. “They’ve been ultra conservative as you would expect, but it’s worked well to date, so I’m sure they didn’t want to undo all the good work that’s been done. “Now is the time to release the shackles and we’re getting somewhere near normality on site with the Covid protocols. “People just want to get back to normality as quickly as possible.” Why it will be so satisfying for everyone to be one again at Pakenham on Thursday night is the hard work that has been done to get to this point. Throughout the pandemic, Calderwood has praised all quarters of the racing indus-
try for their understanding and willingness to play their part in keeping horse racing Covid free and operating. “We praise the level of support of the jockeys, the trainers, the owners, members and the general public have given,” he said. “It’s been their commitment that has allowed us to continue racing all the way through, so it’s great that we’re finally getting back to some level of normality. “The key thing we’ve learnt as a racing club is that the entire industry was at risk, the employment of everybody at every level of our business and everyone took it with a real level of maturity to ensure sure they did obey all the rules and regulations and changed with them because they were changed quite regularly. “We’re appreciative of those efforts made by everybody.”

But that could all change when his two finalists - Equalizer (Box 3) and Squiggle Keeping (Box 8) - contest the Group 2 Backmans Greyhound Supplies Cranbourne Cup (520m) on Saturday night. “I’ve been living in the area for around 25 years and it’s a fantastic place to live,” Thompson said. “I’d love to win the Cranbourne Cup.” Greyhound racing is also a close-knit family affair for Thompson, who adds it would be a huge thrill for his wife Seona and children Luke, 19, and Holly, 17, if they snared the $50,000 first prize. It was a particularly influential knock from Gurpreet Singh, who took just 14 balls to really take the game away, slashing a six and two fours. Down at Denhams Road, Pakenham and Kooweerup were once again matched up with plenty on the line, but the home team were simply clinical. The Lions’ struggles with the bat continued, knocked over for just 130 with skipper Dale Tormey leading the way with 37. The home side was treated to some class with the ball from none other than Jess Mathers (4/27), who was a menace.
It’s been a tough slog for the Lion batters post-Christmas, but based off recent major clashes between the two clubs, it was always going to be a tough chase regardless of the circumstances. A rapid start from skipper Chris Bright (43) all but took the game away from the Lions, with the Demons losing just three wickets to run down the target in just 26 overs. Lachie Ramage (34) found some form for the Demons, while Jess Mathers (30 not out) crunched his highest score of the season. The Seagulls suffered a shock loss down at Tooradin Recreation Reserve against Cranbourne Meadows in a major shake-up to an already unstable ladder. Led brilliantly by Jaswinder Gill (47) the Rebels amassed an incredibly impressive 9/236 from 40 overs, with five players in total scoring between 20 and 40 to showcase some excellent consistency across the board. It was an absolute horror start to the chase for the Gulls, who lost 4/11 courtesy of a stunning new-ball spell from Gurpreet Bharma (2/28) and Gagan Singla (2/14), and despite some fight from Ben Mantel (25), Ben Parrott (23) and Brad Butler (34), the home side were rolled for 125, a whopping 111 runs short. Once again the Rebels were incredibly even, with four bowlers snaring double-wickets, with the cause helped by a run-out too. Cardinia’s impenetrable momentum continued with a domination of Upper Beaconsfield away from home. The Bulls and Maroons are on opposite ends of the table, and Jake Prosser’s side once again showed its ruthless attitude. The home side had some early joy with Alex Nooy and Travis Wheller out in the early stages, but it mattered little as Prosser (37) and Bradey Welsh (67) combined for a 74-run stand that ultimately saw the Bulls post 9/187. Dean Henwood bamboozled the Maroon top-order to leave the home side in tatters, snaring 5/19 from his eight overs to bundle out the opposition for 97 in 33.1 overs. Prosser backed up his class with the bat with another strong bowling performance, as the spinner snared 3/19 from six overs.
