You stand up and look at yourself in the mirror; the amazing dress you have been waiting all year to wear fits just right, your hair and makeup are on point thanks to a local stylist and makeup artist and you are ready to celebrate. Maybe your suit fits just right and the sight of you hopping into a particularly stylish car is enough to bring a tear to your mother’s eye.

COMMUNITY LEADERS

Congratulations to the graduating class of 2020! This is a challenging, but exciting time to be completing your years of schooling. It’s been an incredibly tough year, and even pre-Covid, the future required all of us to be adaptable and prepared. My message to the graduating classes of 2020 is simple: you can do anything if you’re willing to work hard. Who knows where it might lead you? Life is an opportunity but it’s up to you what you make of it. My high school motto is ‘Success is earned’ and it remains true today. You can be anything you choose to be, so take the opportunities available to you; the world is your oyster. As you leave your classrooms for the final time you might reflect on the help you’ve had throughout your time at school. At the heart of a successful school is a group of passionate, dedicated teachers and staff who inspire and encourage their students to try their best every day. And let’s not forget about your family who have provided support and guidance at home. I wish every single graduating student good luck as you make the transition from high school and I wish you every success in your future endeavours.

On this milestone occasion, I hope you and your loved ones take some time to reflect on your journey and celebrate your remarkable achievement thus far. 2020 has been an incredibly challenging, uncertain year for many, but you managed to rise above these adversities and have undoubtedly come out the other end stronger and more determined than ever. Through your education here in the Bundaberg and Burnett region, you and your peers have had a wonderful start to a promising future. I have no doubt that your mentors have equipped you with the knowledge to take on new challenges and make meaningful contributions. You have the power to make a positive difference in our communities and I am sure you will continue to make your family, school and community proud as you look towards a future full of potential and promise. I wish you all the very best as you start the next exciting chapter of your lives. Here’s to a lifetime of success, good health and happiness. Congratulations to you all.

STEPHEN BENNETT MP Member for Burnett

KEITH PITT MP Federal Member for Hinkler

Congratulations to every senior student across the Bundaberg Region as you no doubt count down the days until the end of your secondary school education. The senior year prom is a fitting reward for the hard work students have dedicated to their education over a dozen years. This year, the reward is even greater because the opportunity to attend this event, viewed by many as the formal exit from high school, has been achieved during a period of adversity caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. The reports that have emanated from our local high schools from principals and teaching staff speak glowingly of the resilience and perseverance of the 2020 Year 12 cohort. The dedication to completing what really was a fractured year of learning speaks volumes for the character and stoic resolve of our young people. It is a familiar but none-the-less true saying that you are “the leaders of tomorrow”. The education you have gained during your years of study have primed you either to venture into higher education or to seek a position in the workforce. Your scholastic learnings, I believe, have been greatly enhanced by your exposure to this crisis that has enveloped the world. You have lived through this, gained experience from it, learned to cope with the hardship of the limitations the pandemic placed on our daily lives. You have emerged as more knowing individuals. We live in what I firmly believe is the best region in Australia - if not the world. It excites me to witness this transition of young people from high school to new worlds of opportunity. I hope many of you continue to live in the Bundaberg Region and contribute to its development. The schools that have held you and the teaching staff who have mentored you through these formative years are also deserving of our thanks. Walk the path of life that now unfolds before you firm in the knowledge that there is nothing that is beyond reach. Parents, teachers, and your own selfresolve have prepared you well for the journey.

2020 has been a unique year for the Class of 2020. It seems like such a long time ago that we first heard about this strange virus impacting part of China. Never in our wildest imagination did we consider it would pan out the way it has for our Year 12 students, the Class of 2020. At the beginning of the year, I spoke with the students about what to expect for Year 12. I use the metaphor that completing Year 12 is like climbing Mt Everest, you have to plan your journey, take the time to acclimatise, don’t rush to the top, and be aware of what is happening around you so you can adjust your approach. Little did we know how the year would eventuate. For the Class of 2020, change is normal. They have lived it throughout their lives. They were the first of the full Prep intake, the first Yr 7 cohort as the introduction to secondary school, and the first to experience the new external exams and ATAR arrangements. With this background, they competently engaged with the changed circumstances the pandemic caused. I congratulate the Year 12 students for their focus and commitment this year, making the most of the curtailed opportunities they had. They showed great independence with how effectively they engaged in online learning and demonstrated fine leadership with keeping students connected with the school through the innovative spartan challenges; the toilet paper trick shot episodes were a personal favourite. 2020 was certainly a lesson in resilience and agility for us all and I have been humbled by the generosity of spirit and support demonstrated by all members of the St Luke’s community to help our Year 12 students to thrive in otherwise challenging circumstances. We wish to acknowledge and thank the Class of 2020 for their commitment, contributions, leadership and scholarship this year. They deserve to feel a strong sense of pride for what they have achieved, we are certainly proud of them.
