Quick reads: Little books spark a whole lot of joy By Mitchell Clarke As the famous saying goes, it’s often the little things in life which bring the most joy - and that’s proven true, especially when it comes to Coles’ Little Treehouse books. The success of the supermarket giant’s mini collectable series has brightened up lockdown for many local families. But now - thanks to a Pakenham woman’s noble quest - the books are about to make their way into the hands of some very sick kids in need of colour in their life. “People have really got behind it. They love it and just want to get involved,” she explained. Ms Miszkowiec, who works in Narre Warren, has been able to pick up the books from people living between her house and work. “The books are left in the letter box, so it means I can just drive past and pick them up contact free,” she said. Ms Miszkowiec’s sister co-created the ’Amy & Allie’s Band-Aid and Sticker Project’, which collects character band-aids, stickers and bubbles for children in hospital. A Pakenham couple - who only moved to the area nine weeks ago - have had their dream car stolen and torched during a bizarre aggravated burglary. Cardinia Crime Investigation Unit detectives are investigating the incident, where it’s believed at least two people broke into a three storey Lakeside townhouse in the early hours of Sunday morning, 27 September. The residents, who have asked to remain anonymous, said they slept through the entire ordeal. One of the victims woke around 5am on Sunday morning to find their house had been burgled. “Everything was fine when we went to sleep, so it had to have happened between 12.30am and 5am,” the woman explained.

“When I got up, I went downstairs and saw the back door had been opened and one of the cupboard doors was also left open.” In her half asleep state, the woman hadn’t fully processed that someone had been rummaging through her new home. “I thought ‘oh my god’. It was all a bit strange. I was really confused and couldn’t work out what was going on,” she said. The unknown offender/s allegedly stole the woman’s 2019 Honda Civic and handbag, as well as motorbike gear, a work phone and credit cards. But a number of other possessions including the couple’s new TV, a laptop and new speakers, which were left in plain sight, weren’t taken. “I thought if we’ve been burgled, they’d take more stuff. Fakes: Election heats up By Mitchell Clarke The Australian Federal Police (AFP) have wrapped up their investigation into a series of “fake” social media profiles and anonymous Facebook pages “trolling” Cardinia Shire Council candidates. Federal La Trobe MP Jason Wood - who last week denied any untoward links to a controversial bloc campaign - has this week announced he contacted the AFP following “serious allegations of corruption”. Mr Wood said people were “creating fake, so-called community groups and individual accounts where they simply troll”. It follows controversy around the upcoming election, and in particular the candidates running under the Clean Up Cardinia alliance. Running in the cohort are Mr Wood’s campaign manager at the last election Andrew McNabb (Beacon Hills Ward), his sister in-law

Kaye Cameron (Westernport Ward), Travis Hamilton (Toomuc Ward), Shoheli Sunjida (Officer Ward), Sharon Verschaeren (Bunyip Ward), Brijal Parikh (Central Ward) and Nav Malhi (Henty Ward). A number of other candidates have also since been linked to the group. Two former mayors have both warned the community about the group’s political intentions, claiming links to the Liberal Party. But much of the chatter has come from two anonymous Facebook pages - Cardinia Election Truths and Cardinia Candidates Fact Check - both particularly vocal in questioning the Clean Up group. Star News made numerous attempts to contact each administrator in an attempt to reveal their identity, however none of the pages responded. Mr Wood said his office first reported the

pages to Facebook after specific allegations were made and apparent links were drawn between the Liberal politician and the Cardinia Shire Council election. “As Prime Minister Morrison has previously said, they are the type of people who hides in their mother’s basement, behind a computer screen to troll others,” he said. “As Facebook has failed to act on some of these, we have reported the matter to the AFP to investigate as we wish to find the person or people involved in this slander. “Fake accounts on social media can be reported to places such as Facebook, but some serious allegations or attacks should be reported to the police, like I have done so myself when serious allegations of corruption were falsely spread recently.” Mr McNabb told Star News the accounts appeared to “deceive voters and distract can-

didates”. But he said he wasn’t going to let that happen. “I’m all for free speech, but people should stand by what they say. “Anonymous Facebook posts are cowardly. If someone can’t put their real name to something, they’re not credible,” he said. “I just hope the people of Cardinia don’t get distracted from what really matters. The focus must be on ratepayers. Improving people’s lives is all that I am focused on.” The AFP received a complaint about the pages on 1 October, a spokesperson confirmed. “The complaint was assessed in accordance with standard AFP protocols. This assessment process did not reveal sufficient evidence to suggest a Commonwealth offence had occurred,” the spokesperson said. “The AFP considers this matter finalised.”

Cardinia’s own board game proves a hit with readers By Jessica Anstice The Cardinia Shire community is celebrating the success of the A Part Together board game that was published in last week’s Pakenham-Berwick Gazette. With help from the local community, project coordinator Jenni Ivins designed and created a board game during the coronavirus lockdown. Throughout the four month-long process, it received extensive support from residents right across the shire. “The game has been well received. I’ve had so much positive feedback,” Ms Ivins said. “I’m delighted, and a little relieved, that people like the game.” Residents were asked to contribute drawings or photographers of sites in the municipality to help create the game. Images representing isolation activities like the teddy bear hunt and spoonville, the shire’s many parks and walking tracks, remote learning, the local post office, masks, pets and Zoom meetings were among those submitted. “Knowing everyone who submitted a drawing is now going to see their art in the paper really warms my heart,” she said. “People have remarked on how great it is to have a game about the shire and I have been told the game is quite educational too.” Ms Ivins said figuring out how to get to the destination town on the cards helps players to get to know the 47 towns in the Cardinia Shire. The game is also an opportunity for young children to develop or improve counting skills. “I love the educational aspects of the game,” one player said.

Ms Ivins said players have been considering how to protect their copy so that it lasts longer. This has led Ms Ivins to her next task: providing a more durable version of the game for people to have a permanent memento of their lockdown activities. As for what’s next for her, Ms Ivins said she will continue to conduct livestreams of her weekly workshops in the Mandala Mondays Facebook group.

“It’s six months since I started the group and I believe they are making a positive difference to others’ lives,” she said. “I have been able to do this thanks to the JobKeeper payment for businesses severely impacted by Covid-19 restrictions. “With my cancelled exhibitions and workshops, that is certainly mine.” As the state moves away from Stage 4 restrictions, the payment will be reduced and Ms Ivins hopes to find a way to ensure her arts practice will be viable in contemporary times. “It will be a long time before I can resume my exhibitions, let alone with the same sized audiences; and my finely detailed mind drawings don’t show up as well in online exhibitions,” she added. “That is, unless I add colour, but doing that tells the person viewing the art what to see and a lot of the organic gestalt (seeing more than one thing in the same lines) is lost.” Ms Ivins will develop her shop on Red Bubble, where people can buy her art as prints or have things printed onto other merchandise like furnishings, stationary and clothing. The A Part Together game will eventually be made available as a jigsaw puzzle that will come in a tin. “I’ll also make it available as a poster and on a notebook to be used for keeping score,” she said. “I will upload the GO-TO cards onto mugs and stickers. “This way a lovely hamper could be put together to make a nice gift. Yes, I’m thinking ahead to Christmas.” The board game appeared in last week’s Gazette and more cards are printed in this week’s edition. Last week’s paper is still available at the Gazette offices, corner Princes Highway and Army Road.

Finding their ‘new normal’ Narre Warren North local Toni Arfaras is determined to make life after stroke easier for fellow stroke survivors of working age. The 53-year-old has been selected to join the Lived Experience Working Group as part of the Stroke Foundation Young Stroke Project. The project, funded by the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA), will help working-age Australians (18-65) find their ‘new normal’ after stroke by determining their unique needs and developing information and resources to better meet those needs. Toni said she was honoured to be part of the group guiding this innovative project. “To look at me you wouldn’t know it, but stroke has had a massive impact on my life,” Toni said. “I experience sensory overload every day. It can result in not being able to walk or talk properly. I am unable to go out by myself, drive or work anymore. “It took one week to diagnose my stroke and I was never admitted to rehabilitation, so I missed out on post-stroke assessment and education and had to search for answers myself.” Toni was 46 when stroke changed her life in an instant. Like Toni, many younger stroke survivors have much of life ahead of them; children, careers, roles in the community and financial responsibilities. Stroke impacts all of these things. Around 20 strokes a day impact Australians under the age of 65 with 96 percent of young stroke survivors having reported having ongoing needs after their stroke. Stroke Foundation national manager StrokeConnect Jude Czerenkowski said there was currently little age-appropriate information available for younger stroke survivors. “Almost 90 percent of younger stroke survivors have specific needs relevant to their stage of life, they are telling us these needs are not

Toni said she was determined to ensure

other working age people with stroke were well informed and able to navigate the health system effectively. “I hope that this project will create something tangible across a range of platforms that stroke survivors and their loved ones can use to educate themselves and improve their lives,” she said. The Stroke Foundation Young Stroke Project is seeking stroke survivors of working age, their partners, families and friends along with health professionals and researchers to be involved.

A lifesaving Pakenham-based venture, spearheaded by a paramedic and a teacher, has received a federal cash injection to provide free first aid training throughout Melbourne's south-east. Tiny Hearts - founded by sisters Rachael Waia and Nikki Jurcutz - will arm 1800 local parents and carers with the skillsets required to save their children in the event of an emergency. In a regional first, 300 parents are also set to be trained bilingually, catering for Chinese and Afghan communities. Their journey began in a garage, but Tiny Hearts now has a headquarters in Pakenham's Industrial Park - proving that business success is attainable under the most challenging circumstances. Ms Waia, a former educator and volunteer first responder, was first aid trained when she was just 15 years old. She is determined to share her vital knowledge with as many parents as possible. "I've got two kids of my own and I know what it's like when they choke and when they're really sick," she said. "Because we've got such a good report built with our parents, we get a lot of feedback where they say, hey, you literally saved our babies' lives. "I love what I do - waking up and making a difference." Tiny Hearts worked in conjunction with the South East Melbourne Primary Health Network to secure the federal grant. The organisation also hopes to reduce the number of inappropriate admissions to the emergency department and create a better

health care system for the entire community. According to government figures, 45 per cent of metropolitan emergency department presentations are non-urgent. Tiny Hearts has also compiled statistics from participants, illustrating the importance of teaching the critical first aid skills. After the course, 98 per cent of parents said they felt more confident to act effectively in an emergency. Almost 50 per cent reported that they had used their acquired infant and child first aid knowledge within six months of undertaking the course. Narre Warren's Shelby Cooke, who performed CPR on her choking two-year-old daughter while paramedics rushed to their home, stressed the importance of first aid training. She believes that had she not received the course through her workplace, her daughter may have suffocated. "I still owe everything to having those skills," she said. "The more people that are equipped with them, the less tragedies we're going to see with children, babies and toddlers. "It's such a frightening thing to go through - so you need to be prepared." The free sessions will be held across the region, including at Beaconhills College, in Pakenham. Topics covered will include choking, fevers, convulsions, burns, drowning, bleeding, caring for an unconscious person, bites and stings and head injuries. Resident’s rubbish anger By Jessica Anstice A “giant” pile of rubbish left on a nature strip in Pakenham has a resident fuming. Dumped near the intersection of Macleod Court and Tyalla Way, the unsightly mountain of trash has left Pakenham resident David Connor feeling frustrated. Plastic bags, buckets, cushions, drink bottles, cat scratching posts, footballs, trophies, electrical wires, books and pots are among the items left scattered across the grassed area. “I rang Cardinia Council on Monday after seeing it from the Princes Highway as I drove past and it was still there last night,” Mr Connor said. “It’s absolutely disgusting and I’m noticing more and more rubbish being dumped on nature strips since council’s hard waste collection scheme was changed from annual or bi annual to a ring and book system. “May be several reasons as to why it’s there, ranging from bins being too small for larger sized families or that we have moved away from regular hard rubbish collections to a booking service which people are either unwilling, unable or unaware of.” Taking into consideration the rubbish pile is not placed directly in front of a house, Mr Connor said he is certain it is not hard rubbish. However a Cardinia Shire spokesperson said it was a pile of hard rubbish booked by two homes at the location. “Our hard waste contractor has removed the booked materials,” the spokesperson said. “The residents have been asked to remove the remaining unacceptable and excess items.” Nevertheless, Mr Connor believes it is a potential “health risk” to members of the community. “Surely this has to be a health risk not to mention potentially attracting vermin,” he said. “There is also the potential to add fire haz-

A “giant” pile of rubbish left on a nature strip in Pakenham has a resident fuming. ard to that list if someone gets bored in lockdown.” In order to solve the issue of dumped rubbish in the shire, Mr Connor would like to see the council conduct a review of its procedures. “When I rang council several weeks ago to enquire about several sites of hard rubbish in my local area, I was told they could not help me due to privacy reasons and literally was unable to resolve the issue until a much higher authority stepped in,” he explained. “Whereas other councils, like Casey and Kingston, both have systems which are much easier to deal with general enquiries relating to hard rubbish.”

Construction bonus: Casey gets $285m road boost More than $285m will be poured into three road upgrade projects across Casey over the next four years in a major boost for the municipality’s economy. Victorian Liberal senator David Van announced on 5 October the Federal Government was investing over $165 million in matched funding from the Victorian Government into the road infrastructure upgrade projects across the South East, creating an estimated 264 jobs to bust congestion and improve road safety. The projects include: $54.3m for the upgrade of Western Port Highway roundabouts at Ballarto Road and Frankston-Cranbourne Road; $169 million for the upgrade of Hall Road in

The Hall Road project will see 5.2 kilometres of Hall Road upgraded between McCormicks Road in Skye and CranbourneFrankston Road in Cranbourne West. Traffic lanes on Hall Road will be increased to two lanes in each direction between McCormicks Road and Cranbourne-Frankston Road Intersections will also be upgraded at McCormicks Road, Taylors Road, Evans Road, Western Port Highway and Cranbourne-Frankston Road to improve access and reduce the risk of crashes, and new shared walking and cycling path along Hall

Road will also be built. The project is expected to start in early 2022 and finish by late 2024. Meanwhile, the Narre Warren North Road project will upgrade Narre Warren North Road between Fox Road and Belgrave-Hallam Road in Narre Warren North. Upgrades will include an additional lane in each direction, upgrades to the Heatherton Road and Ernst Wanke Road intersections, and new safety treatments for the Memorial Drive and Crawley Road intersections. It is expected to start in late 2021 and finish in early 2023.The Federal Government has matched funding from the State Government for each project, including a fourth project to upgrade South Road in Moorabbin.

Beloved gallah gone By Brendan Rees A Lynbrook woman is hopeful for the return of her pet galah after it flew away from her family home on Tuesday morning 5 October. Laura Black has posted information about her missing her pink cockatoo on Facebook and is praying someone may spot him. “He is tame but might be frightened so please approach slowly,” she wrote. “He loves pine nuts, walnuts and sunflower seeds. His right wing was clipped when we got him, so he can fly but not very well.” Ms Black said her beloved galah named Bink had accidentally escaped their home and flew off towards May Gibbs Crescent. “I lost sight of him,” she explained after Bink was spooked by another bird about 8am. He got out of the door while I was going out and he followed me.” Ms Black said Bink, whom she has owned since the start of the year, was a part of the family and loved to follow their 11-month old son Silvanno around their home “like a puppy”. All students set to return All students in Years 7 to 10 are set to go back to the classroom this month, the State Government has announced. Year 7 students will resume face-to-face learning from Monday 12 October. Students in Years 8 to 10 will return from Monday 26 October. The staggered return is based on the advice of the Victorian Chief Health Officer and is designed to manage the increased movement across the community with the return of staff and students to school. The approach will allow a full 14 days between stages to account for a full incubation period of the virus and enable schools to work together with parents to support the safe return of students to on-site learning. It will also allow schools to review the implementation of risk-mitigation measures as all students return. Primary school students, students studying VCE and VCAL, and students attending specialist schools will return to face-to-face learning in metropolitan Melbourne from

Monday 12 October. Students in rural and regional Victoria are returning to the classroom in a staggered approach from Monday 5 October. In addition, the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) and the Department of Education and Training (DET) have strategies in place to ensure any potential outbreaks in schools can be quickly controlled. Any school attended by a student or staff member while infectious will be closed. Deep cleaning, contact tracing, and a review by DHHS staff will occur before the school is reopened. Opposition education spokeswoman Cindy McLeish said a ban on classroom learning for students in Years 8 to 10 until the end of this month was too late, and accused the Premier of “making decisions up as it goes along”. “(Daniel) Andrews has had months to develop plans to safely return our kids to classroom learning but instead has been caught up in buck-passing and cover-ups involved with his bungled hotel quarantine,” she said.

Register your pool soon With summer fast approaching, the State Government is reminding pool owners they only have until November to register their private pool or spa. The Government introduced new regulations in December last year to make swimming pools and spas safer and prevent young children from drowning. The regulations include new requirements for owners to register their swimming pools and spas with their local council by 1 November with a one-off fee of up to $79. Failure to register within this timeframe may attract a council infringement notice of up to $330. Due to the impacts of coronavirus the deadline for registration was extended by five months to acknowledge the extra pressure on families and the increased workload on councils. Drowning is the most common cause of preventable death for young children and in Victoria most fatal drownings of young children occur in backyard swimming pools. Lego lovers’ model move A passionate and creative CFA couple from Berwick Fire Brigade have crafted an impressive replica of their fire station using Lego. Last year, firefighters Adrianna Barbu and Jeremy Gillies decided to build a complete miniature replica of the Berwick Fire Station, including the CFA signage, fire trucks and firefighters inside and outside the facility. The project took around three months to complete. Adrianna said they had to source Lego pieces from all over Australia and some from overseas to match the shape and colour scheme of the fire station accurately. “We carefully replicated the entire station to the finest details, such as the pin pad on the turnout door, plant arrangements and even the mops behind the bins at the back of the station,” she said. “We have incorporated a lighting kit inside

the station to light it up for an extra visual effect. “We also matched about a dozen members with similar looking Lego mini figurines and added small identifying details, which meant members were actually able to recognise themselves within the build.” The replica was presented to the rest of the brigade at its annual dinner in June last year and was displayed at the station for the next two months. The entire replica cost the pair around $1500 to bring it life. “We took pictures of every side of the station and used a program to digitally design the layout the software told us the blocks we required to build it,” Adrianna said. “This was our first custom build and we enjoyed doing it. We could possibly look to create more CFA facilities in the future.”

Family’s desperate plea By Brendan Rees In just a few short months a Narre Warren mother’s life has been torn apart. At 57, Leanne Lawtey’s husband sadly lost his 12-month leukemia battle in the early hours of Tuesday morning 5 October. And their 14-year-old daughter Aleacia, who hasn’t been able to see her father since June, is battling a rare disease. “He was the love of my life,” Ms Lawtey said of her husband John. “A beautiful, beautiful soul.” Ms Lawtey said her husband’s condition had begun to improve until he took a turn for the worse and “had no fight left in him”. “We thought there was light at the end of the tunnel for him to come home,” she said. Meanwhile, Ms Lawtey is a full-time carer to their daughter Aleacia who was born with hereditary spastic paraplegia, a neurological disorder that gradually stiffens and weakens the muscles. She has been confined to a wheelchair since she was four and has never been able to walk independently. In June, Aleacia underwent scoliosis surgery but her recovery took longer than expected and required intensive inpatient rehabilitation. While Aleacia was in hospital, Ms Lawtey’s husband was admitted to the Olivia NewtonJohn Cancer and Wellness and Research Centre where he started chemotherapy. But the family was told the only chance of a cure was through a stem cell transplant. While several possible donors were found, the Covid-19 pandemic meant sourcing a do-

nor from overseas “became near impossible and problematic”. Their 16-year-old son then selflessly stepped up as a volunteer which “would change everything“.

“It was no longer an allogeneic stem cell transplant, Ms Lawtey said. “It became a haploidentical stem cell transplant and had never been done at the ONJ centre before. John is now their first haplo transplant.”

A haploidentical transplant uses healthy, blood-forming cells from a half-matched donor to replace the unhealthy ones in which the donor is typically a family member. “All the while I was trying my best to support my daughter in hospital, my son going through the donation process and my husband who was also in hospital,” Ms Lawtey said. In spite of their grief the family now face another hurdle. “When my daughter was finally able to go home we were unable to transport her as we don’t have a wheelchair accessible car and I could no longer lift or slide her into our 14-year-old van,” Ms Lawtey said, adding she was limited to using national patient transport. “Aleacia has missed several appointments at the Royal Children’s Hospital because I am unable to transport her.” With the family’s income reduced to Centrelink support and unable to afford taxi fares, Ms Lawtey has now launched a desperate appeal to raise more than $15,000 so she can buy a wheelchair- accessible car for her daughter. “We are unable to get or pay off a loan, so I have started a GoFundMe in hopes that kind hearted, generous souls will assist us to purchase a reliable second-hand wheelchair accessible car.” Ms Lawtey said she gave a “heartfelt thank you” to anyone that could help her family. Pakenham Produce and Saddlery has been serving the community for more than 40 years - and, thanks to the support of that same community, has been able to continue trading throughout the lockdown period. “It’s been hard, just like for every other business and person out there,” said assistant manager Bree Ure. “We have had to stand on our own two feet, not qualifying for any government assistance. We’ve had to manage anxiety and tension caused by these restrictions with ourselves, staff and customers. We are grateful to have been able trade during Covid restrictions and support the local community and our staff.” During the first lockdown, Pakenham Produce closed its showroom to the public and reverted to drive-thru only.When stage four lockdown was implemented, the business had to find new ways to be able to serve its customers by implementing contactless service through the drive-thru. Fortunately, the showroom was able to remain open as the business was deemed essential as it provides animal welfare supplies. “There’s been many adjustments we’ve had to make for the different stages of the restrictions, some small and some big - our team have been supportive in all the changes,” Ms Ure said. “We have thorough hygiene practises at all points of sale, social distancing, a reduced customer ratio in the showroom, hand sanitiser and entry logs.” With the easing of restrictions now on the horizon, Ms Ure and the team are looking for-

Smoothing school path Cardinia Shire and City of Casey students have been given the green light to return to school-based learning in the coming weeks, under the State Government’s re-opening roadmap. Beaconhills College’s Wellbeing Counsellor Laura Collins said the prospect of going back to school was exciting for some children, but possibly daunting for others. Ms Collins, who works out of the Berwick campus, has a few tips for parents to help smooth the path. Practise school-day routines:Before school returns, run through the morning process a few times, to help ease anxiety. Include packing their school bag, getting ready in a set amount of time or organising their uniform and lunchbox. For younger children you could play ‘pretending we are going to school’ and even include a walk around the block before and after school, to help it feel more authentic. Talk to them about their worries, concerns and what to expect: Talk to your children about anything that can be sorted out before day 1, to ease any anxiety. This gives you time to talk to relevant staff, to potentially resolve/reassure any worries. Talk through what to expect, and normalise their feelings - a lot of people are feeling anxious or uncertain about another change. Re-establish good sleeping habits:Try to re-establish good sleeping habits a week or so before school returns, so there is one less adjustment to have to face in week 1. Encourage them to go to bed earlier, and wake up in time for their old face-to-face learning routine.

Hero was less than five months old when he was recently left tied to the fence at the Cranbourne Lost Dogs’ Home shelter. The team wasted no time checking him over to make sure he was okay. Nobody came looking for Hero, so it was time to find him a home where he’d be loved and looked after forever. With his happy-golucky spirit the team knew it wouldn’t take long. Hero has now found the most kind and loving new family. He’s the first dog to be adopted from the new Cranbourne dog adoption area. “Hero’s adoption is also special because it marks the expansion of our Dog Adoption Program,” The Home’s spokesperson, Suzana Talevski said. “This will help find new homes for lost and abandoned animals like Hero and hopefully inspire the local community to adopt and change the life of a shelter pet.” Only cats were adopted from Cranbourne

These Warriors battle on By Lance Jenkinson There was an air of confidence about the Pakenham Warriors before they were sideswiped by Covid-19 lockdowns on the eve of the Big V basketball men’s Division 2 season. Only days before their season opener, the Warriors were forced to pack up and close the stadium - having undergone a long and gruelling pre-season. Frustratingly, the Warriors returned for one more training session before a second shutdown. A season of hope and expectations went by the wayside, leaving Warriors coach Brad Bridgewater and his players flat. “We put in a pretty big pre-season,” he said. “I put them through their paces in a college-style program. “We were set, had our first game coming up that weekend, and then to be shutdown was a bit disheartening. “We understand what is going on and that it had to be done.” There will be no shortage of motivation for Pakenham when the group is given the all clear to return for pre-season training. Having finished in sixth place with a 15-9 record in 2019, the Warriors had plans to give the competition a real shake. Bridgewater can sense a team that is hungry for a renewed push after being robbed of their chance following the cancelled season. “That will be a big driving force for the guys,” he said. “We’ve got a new coach, a new system and we’re just trying to see where we can go. “It’s definitely unfinished business.” Bridgewater is keen to keep the Pakenham band together next season. He has received verbal commitments from most of the squad, who want to come back and help the Warriors’ title push. “Most of the guys have said they’re happy to return and that’s positive for me,” he said. “Nothing in concrete yet, but a lot of verbal yes-es. “(We’re) just waiting to see what happens with everything and when we’re able to get back. “We’ll put a lot of that stuff in stone once that happens.” Bridgewater is still on the hunt for one more quality player. While confident the current roster can

At 40, the American wants properly to transition into coaching. “If I can get away with not having to play, that’d be great,” he said. “It’s going to work towards me really getting out of the mind of a player and just being a coach. “I quite enjoyed pre-season [coaching] - it

was really good for me to see that side of the game and I was excited about what was to come.” Bridgewater is delighted with his role at Pakenham. Whether or not it is a launching pad for a career in coaching remains to be seen, but he believes it will give him the best grounding. “It’s an amazing opportunity and I’m grateful to Pakenham,” he said. “It’s ideal because you get to see all sides of coaching. “It’s not like I’m only the offensive coach, only the defensive coach or I’m only the conditioning coach - you’re literally doing it all. “I do have an assistant and he’s brilliant, but for the most part there’s no sort of specialised coaching, so you get a taste of it all, which is amazing because you can grow and learn.” For Bridgewater, it would be a dream to

coach in the college system in the US, but he knows you have to crawl before you walk in the ultra competitive coaching game. He is eager to go about it the right way and sees his role with Pakenham as both a mission to bring success to the club, while taking on an apprenticeship in coaching. “If I can make a career out of coaching, that would be unbelievable,” he said. “For me, it’s all about growing and getting that experience and trying to get some wins under my belt, so maybe someone will recognise that and take a chance on me. “In order for me to get back home and to the college system over there, I think what I’m doing now is a good way to get there. “If I can have this semi-professional experience and have some success, that would be appealing to a team over there and shows what I can bring to the table.”

Nonconformist is their rebel with a real cause By sports editor Russell Bennett It’s ironic that a horse called Nonconformist can bring so many people together behind the same cause. But that’s exactly the effect the Grahame Begg-trained gelding has on the Henwood family as they look forward to its potential runs in the Cranbourne and Caulfield cups. Wayne and Nick ‘Chook’ Henwood would need no introduction to those throughout Pakenham and into west Gippsland footy circles, and they’re just two of the owners with a stake in Nonconformist - along with Nick’s two sisters Anthea Walsh and Mel Elston (the wife of current Pakenham Cricket Club player-coach Rob), and Denise and Danielle Henwood - Wayne’s cousins. In fact, it was Danielle and Denise who raced Nonconformist’s mum, Good Thinking. Wayne and Nick jumped on-board after he was broken in, but they weren’t exactly convinced from the start that they’d made the right call. “About five years ago they sent us a picture of him and we thought ‘s***, what have we got ourselves in for here?’,” Nick said with a laugh. “He just looked as small as anything, but we’ve had a hell of a lot of fun with him so far.” Nonconformist’s biggest win so far was in the Group 2 Alister Clark Stakes at Moonee Valley in mid-March - on a fateful day for the 18 STAR NEWS

broader Melbourne community. “It was on Friday the 13th when the coronavirus restrictions were brought in,” Nick explained. “We were getting ready to go to the Valley as a family that night, and at 4pm it was called off.” Though that brought with it some obvious disappointment, what followed next was a memorable social media video that encapsulated the Henwoods erupting in their living room as Nonconformist crossed the line for a famous win. “That was brilliant, just being at home with the kids,” Nick said. “We obviously would have loved to be there, but we made it special in our own way.” And clearly the story of its first Group level win is one that won’t be forgotten any time soon - given the unique circumstances. But its breakthrough win, on home soil for the Henwoods at Sportsbet Pakenham back in January, was special in its own right. “That was right in our own backyard,” said Nick, a favourite son of the Nar Nar Goon footy club who lives in Maryknoll. “So that was pretty special - having everyone in the winners’ room. Covid Cup to start season By Nick Creely Warragul and District Cricket Association’s ‘Covid Cup’ is set to kick off this Saturday, 10 October, with the five-week tournament generating plenty of excitement. With the regular season set to start in midNovember, the WDCA’s Covid Cup will feature just one club within the Cardinia Shire - Iona - with the remaining clubs within regional Victoria set to battle it out across five divisions. The mini-tournament will be played in one-day format, with 40 overs per side and a 12.30pm start, with a final between the top two sides to be played after the five rounds, on either 8 November or 14 November - depending on when the regular season is expected to start. In the WDCA’s A Grade tournament, Yarragon, Buln Buln, Ellinbank, Hallora, Western Park and Drouin will do battle, in what is expected to be a hotly contested five rounds. Drouin, in particular, has been particularly bolstered, with Casey-South Melbourne stars Jordan Wyatt and Nathan Lambden - who both live regionally - set to feature as they too gear up for another Premier Cricket season, while ex-Long Island star Aaron Paxton, ex-Prahran batsman Cam McPhan will also feature. Troy Lehmann has also signed on as senior coach in a major coup. In other team news, Yarragon has appointed Kurt Borsato as senior coach this season, and announced the recruitment of Dinith Anjula. At Ellinbank, Lucas Plozza has been signed, Damon Healy will coach Hallora, and Western Park have recruited Jack Armour.

One of Pakenham Racing Club’s top horses will be eyeing off Group 1 glory at Caulfield this Saturday. The Phillip Stokes-trained Instant Celebrity will be the top local chance at the first major meeting on the Melbourne metropolitan calendar for this year’s Spring Racing Carnival. “People have got their focus on Caulfield this weekend,” Pakenham Racing Club general manager of racing and commercial Wade Calderwood said. “It’s the first of the big metro meetings that kicks off the Spring racing carnival, traditionally. “There’s a real focus on the Thousand Guineas and the Caulfield Guineas. “It could be a huge story if one of our Pakenham-trained runners win.” Instant Celebrity will be one of the toprated chances in the Thousand Guineas. The unbeaten three-year-old filly is the early favourite to take out the race run over 1600 metres. Her form is spot on, winning the key lead-up race, the Group 2 Thousand Guineas Prelude, in impressive fashion on 26 September. “It was probably the run of the day - it was huge,” Calderwood said. “Three wide and took off with about 600 metres to go.” In Stokes, and Peter Moody, Pakenham has two big stables with huge ambition. We hope that in the second half of this racing season we can all enjoy the excitement of live racing at Pakenham”. Existing members don’t have to do anything to recieve the extension. The PRC has updated its system to ensure 2019/20 membership cards and benefits are extended through the season.
