Due to the extensive damage to the property, the cause of the fire remains unknown, however the suspicious fire is being investigated by detectives from the Cardinia Crime Investigation Unit (CIU). A Victoria Police spokeswoman said a crime scene guard had been placed on the property and would remain on site until an arson chemist is able to attend the scene. A suspicious house fire at a vacant Officer property is being investigated by the Cardinia Crime Investigation Unit. Up to 30 firefighters were called to the property, located just off the Princes Highway near Brunt Road, around 4am on Wednesday morning, 23 September. Officers from the Pakenham police station had been patrolling the area when they noticed smoke in the vicinity and raised the alarm.

A CFA spokesperson said the brick house was “fully involved” when emergency services arrived on scene. It took crews an hour to bring the blaze under control, which was believed to have been burning for some time. Volunteer crews from Beaconsfield and Officer CFA responded with two pumpers, two tankers and a pumper tanker. They were also supported by a breathing apparatus van from Bayswater and CFA operational support vehicles. One Fire Rescue Victoria (FRV) appliance from Pakenham was also 12425088-FA36-19

Feline fury, note threat By Mitchell Clarke A vile letter threatening to torture and kill cats has been distributed to a number of residents living within a Pakenham complex. The note stated: “If you haven’t seen ‘don’t f**k with cats’, I suggest you do, because the next time your cat is in my backyard, that’s what I am going to do to it”. It appears to have been made in reference to a Netflix true crime documentary which featured footage of a murderer who gained internet infamy by circulating videos of himself killing kittens. One man, who wishes to remain anonymous, said he received the letter late Thursday night, 17 September. The man contacted Pakenham police station, who recommended him to purchase CCTV in a bid to catch the cranky cat hater in the act. “At the moment, I feel that someone’s going to jump into my backyard and mutilate my cats,” he said. “I don’t want to get into a paranoid state but that’s how I’m feeling because now we know there’s a psycho living near us.” But it appears the sender has his neighbours and their cats mixed up, as the letter

recipient claims he’s never let his pets off his property. “We don’t trust our cats to be outside, so we built them a cat enclosure in our backyard instead,” he explained. “It’s obviously someone else’s cats. Everyone in the units has suspicions on who sent it, but I don’t know for sure who it was. “They’re a coward though. It’s as simple as that, and they obviously have got something against cats. “The most valuable thing is communication, so if you’ve got a problem, have the decency to talk to people rather than hiding behind a note.” Cardinia Shire Council laws state that all cats must be kept contained to their own property at all times. Problem cats can be reported to the council if they pose a health risk, keep coming on to your property or are too noisy. According to the council, the problem should only be reported after attempts are made to contact the cat’s owner first. A council spokeswoman did not comment on the specific incident. RSPCA Victoria was contacted for comment.

High traffic zone: Church application before council By Mitchell Clarke A contentious planning application to build a $1.5 million Mormon Church in Pakenham is currently before council. The Church of the Latter Day Saints is proposing to build a place of worship on the vacant block of land on the corner of Army Road and Murphy Road, opposite Pakenham Hills Primary School. According to the planning document, the development will include a one storey meeting house, which features a main multipurpose room with a seating capacity of 208, as well as a series of smaller practice rooms and parking. It’s understood each congregation will host about 170 people on site, with regular scheduled activity occurring between 6 and 8am and 6 and 9pm on weekdays. The site will also be used between 8am and 5pm on Saturdays and between 9am and 4pm on Sundays, with up to 124 vehicles set to move between the site during 11 and 12pm, when worships and religious instructions are held. Neighbouring sites have also been warned to expect that “irregular” activity

The busy church will be located over the road from Pakenham Hills Primary School. 216180 could occur until midnight on Friday and Saturday evenings. More than 60 car park spaces will be created on the site, with entry to the site set to be located along Murphy Road via two driveway crossovers.

Council documents said the Church had identified a need to purchase the land “many years ago”. It’s understood the local Mormon community currently meets in a leased facility but has identified a demand and capacity to

build its own purpose specific centre. “The use is a not for profit community services to ensure the wellbeing of people who live and work in the area,” the application stated. The applicant was contacted for comment. Cardinia Shire Council development and compliance services manager Owen Hardidge said a planning application notice had been provided to properties adjacent to the land. Rob Charles, 67, recently had life-changing robotic surgery at St John of God Berwick Hospital to remove a cancerous tumour. A resident of Mornington, he knew from research and advice from his specialist, urological surgeon Tony De Sousa, that robotic surgery would be a good option given its proven outcomes around effective removal of cancer whilst minimizing surgical complications and post-operative pain. St John of God Berwick Hospital (SJGBH) acquired the da Vinci Xi, an investment costing over $3.5 million, in September 2019. St John of God Berwick has a number of surgeons trained in robotic surgery who are able to perform surgery on patients with disease in kidneys, bladder, bowel, prostate, stomach and the female reproduction organs. The robot features arms which are placed into the patient’s body by the surgeon. These arms connect with the da Vinci’s advanced console system. The console allows the surgeon to sit in a comfortable position throughout the operation, giving them greater movement and dexterity than historical surgical techniques. A year on and Mr de Sousa has recently completed the hospital’s milestone 100th robotic case whilst his colleague, Mr Shekib Shahbaz, conducted the hospital’s first robotic case in September 2019. “St John of God Berwick’s purchase of the da Vinci Xi robotic platform has been one of the most exciting medical developments for the Casey-Cardinia and Gippsland regions, bringing world class technology to the people of the south east Melbourne and Eastern Victoria. The advanced, minimally invasive robot allows our patients access to the latest world class technology close to their homes,” said Mr Shahbaz. Rob echoes the sentiment: “I am very pleased with the result and my recovery time and Berwick was certainly a better option all round than travelling into the city.” The robot enables the surgeon to access tra-

ditionally difficult-to-reach areas and has allowed some patients to receive surgery which, historically, may not have been possible. “(The da Vinci Xi) allows the surgeon to operate with an unparalleled ... precise and minimally invasive capability to enable excellent outcomes for the patient,” Mr Shahbaz explained. SJGHC South East Melbourne Hospitals CEO, Lisa Norman added: “It is exciting to be able to offer patients world-leading technology close to home and get the benefits of these minimally-invasive procedures which can enable them to recover faster in hospital and at home, and generally experience less pain,” she said. The hospital’s most prevalent da Vinci surgical experience has been total removal of the prostate gland related to cancer. The classic presentation for this condition is difficulty passing urine and blood in the urine. It is important that men see their GP quickly to allow them to perform tests and then if required referral to a specialist urologist for ongoing treatment. Men can frequently experience difficulty passing urine as a result of the prostate growing larger as part of the normal aging process. In a very small number of cases it relates to a cancer growth and the robot provides a great method to safely remove the prostate in this scenario. The good news for men is whether poor urine flow relates to normal prostate enlargement or cancer related prostate enlargement, the urologist has multiple techniques to ensure good relief of symptoms depending on your specific circumstance, so please seek help from your GP if passing urine is an issue. Mr Charles is thrilled with the outcome of his surgery and, whilst he is still required to have ongoing check-ups, he describes having the surgery as a “huge load off his shoulders, both mentally and physically.” He now has his life ahead and looks forward to playing tennis at his club and travelling.

Cardinia’s candidate crush By Mitchell Clarke Almost 30 candidates will fight for just five spots to represent the booming Pakenham and Officer communities in the upcoming Cardinia Shire Council election. The new single wards - Central, Henty, Officer, Toomuc and Pakenham Hills - will allow just one councillor to be elected to represent their respective ratepayers. A whopping 10 hopefuls have nominated to run for Officer Ward, the Henty Ward has seven candidates, Toomuc has six, Central four and Pakenham Hills just two. Prior to this election, Central Ward covered all of Pakenham and was made up of four councillors - Collin Ross, Carol Ryan, Michael Schilling and Jodie Owen. Mr Ross, Ms Ryan and Mr Schilling will all re-contest their spot in different wards, while Ms Owen has decided to step away from her council role. Ms Owen, a former mayor, issued a plea to those vying for a spot. She urged all candidates to run for the right reasons. “I hope that those that come in behind me do so for our community - don’t do it to get on State or Federal,” she said.

“Love your community and get elected because that’s whats important, and that’s what’s kept me going.” Collin Ross will hope to be elected to the new Central Ward while Carol Ryan and Michael Schilling have nominated to represent

More questions come from expenses By Mitchell Clarke A review into the expenses of councillor Collin Ross has recommended Cardinia Shire Council make further inquiries as to whether a code of conduct breach has been committed. The investigation, carried out by Justicia Lawyers, was presented to the September council meeting, after outgoing Ranges Ward councillor Leticia Wilmot called for a review into the claims of Cr Ross. The review was centred around the Central Ward councillor’s travel and out-ofpocket expense claims, with reference to his paid positions on the board of the Victorian Local Governance Association (VLGA) and the Metropolitan Waste and Resource Recovery Group (MWRRG). On a number of occasions - 15 February 2018, 30 October 2019 and 27 November 2019 - Cr Ross was found to have been paid sitting fees by MWRRG and was reimbursed for travel. But he is also alleged to have claimed travel expenses from the council too, for a 136 kilometre return journey from Pakenham to the CBD to attend unpaid meetings on the same dates. The review found Cr Ross also received a sitting fee of $426 per meeting from the VLGA, in addition to being reimbursed by council to attend the meetings on 8 and 29 August, 28 November and 2 December 2019. The reviewer recommended the council put further inquiries to Cr Ross and obtain legal advice as to whether any breaches had occurred. A new report will be tabled to the November council meeting, but due to the timing of the investigation, Cr Wilmot fears the inquiry will be dropped. “There’s a certain level of non-transparent behaviour here and I have a real issue with that. It’s in our code of conduct that we actually conduct ourselves with transparency and I don’t think there’s been full transparency here at all,” she said. “It needs to be further investigated. There is still something there that is not right and I hope the findings are completely transparent and that whatever legal advice comes from this, is not just dropped and swept under the carpet. “That is my biggest fear, because of the timing, that it will get swept to the side.” The report also highlighted Cr Ross’ unconventional route of travel into the city. Google Maps stated the shortest route to VLGA meetings was 121.9 kilometres, which was 14 kilometres less than the 136 kilometre return journey claimed. When questioned by the Gazette, Cr Ross said his actual routes were about 148 kilopakenhamnews.starcommunity.com.au

Cr Collin Ross has long been a supporter of rate caps. 209223 metres, and he took them to avoid traffic and notorious pinch points. He said he deliberately claimed less (136km) in case he drove off track to visit his elderly father or pick up his daughter. Councillor Jodie Owen said there were several points of the report that alarmed her. “Councillors must take the direct and shortest route to any meetings or any venues. When I read Cr Ross’ response to how he drives to Melbourne, it raised alarm bells in my head because I have never in my life considered driving from Pakenham through that route,” she said. “As councillors, our allowances are paid with ratepayers money. It is not our money and it is for this reason, I believe, that further legal advice is paramount.” Councillor Ross said he welcomed any inquiry, but said the whole investigation was an “election stunt” and a “witch hunt” aimed at causing harm.

“We just want procedural fairness and a natural justice, but there has been no fairness at all,” he said. “It’s like they (council) gag you. They put tape around your head and they sit you in the corner and say you can’t talk in the council meeting to defend yourself. “I have been the most scrutinised person in the history of Cardinia Shire Council.” Port Ward councillor Ray Brown told the meeting he wouldn’t become part of the socalled witch hunt. “I think as soon as people hear the word investigation, they think that equals wrongdoing, well that’s not always correct,” he said. “I’ll let the report unravel exactly what the issues are, exactly what Cr Ross is accountable for, if anything.” Council CEO Carol Jeffs will prepare a report for the November council meeting.

Hamilton will run in Schilling’s area, while fabled former councillor Kate Lempriere is hopeful to claim Ryan’s ward in a bid to get back on council. Collin Ross will need to beat newcomers Brijal Parikh and Naomi Horsley, who have both led active social media campaigns. A brand new councillor will take over Officer, after no existing councillors nominated to run in the new ward. Those in contention include Larissa Damouni, who is a notable community volunteer, and Shoheli Sunjida, who will run as part of the ‘Clean Up Cardinia’ campaign. The Clean Up Cardinia campaign, headed by Liberal member Andrew McNabb, has drawn attention for being perceived to run as a bloc in a bid to gain a majority on the council. Mr McNabb will come up against long-time councillor Brett Owen to take over the Beaconhills Ward. A further 11 candidates will go head to head for a spot on the shire’s three remaining wards - Beaconhills, Western Port and Bunyip - as former mayor Jeff Springfield has already claimed Ranges Ward by virtue of an uncontested election.

We have still had no clarification whether, as an industry, we can send a technician to fix a pool or even open for water testing in store, ultimately leaving our clients and franchise partners completely in the dark. The bacterial health risk is also only one side of it - the physical and mental health benefits for locked-down families to enjoy recreation in their own backyard pools, where they don’t even have to leave home, is ultimately just as important. We have the support of local councils who are terrified of the public health risk to domestic, public and commercial pools if forced to go untreated by the government’s refusal. Incredibly, the Premier has deemed dog washing more important than human health, with commercial dog washing approved from 23 September but not pool maintenance - bodies of water that Victorian people submerse in.

The only reason the Andrews’ Government could continue the ban on pool maintenance is the belief that ‘only the rich have pools’, which has been indicated to us as political thinking. Firefighters are calling for action following a spate of house fires across the state including Cranbourne. Six Victorians lost their lives in house fires in the three months from April through to June. The tragic news comes as residents without working smoke alarms in Cranbourne East, Ringwood East, Bundoora, and Cheltenham narrowly escaped after their houses caught fire during July. In September, four people were rushed to hospital following two separate house fires in Cranbourne West. Sadly, a 35-year-old man died following a house fire in Cranbourne West in May, which was deemed non-suspicious. Fire Rescue Victoria’s deputy commissioner of fire safety, Michelle Young said it was discouraging to discover that many people are still not installing and maintaining their smoke alarms. “If you don’t have working smoke alarms throughout your home you’re putting yourself and your loved ones in danger,” said Ms Young. “It takes as little as three minutes for flames and smoke to engulf a whole room - and in an emergency every second counts. “Install smoke alarms in all bedrooms, hallways and living areas and make sure they are interconnected so that when one alarm activates, all alarms will sound. “Don’t think it can’t happen to you - having a fire escape plan in place and working smoke alarms is what will save your life.” Ms Young’s comments were echoed by CFA Acting Chief Officer Gary Cook who said other simple steps such as never leaving cooking unattended, not overloading power boards and turning off all heat sources before going to bed “can mean the difference between life and death”.

‘Road fix’ blitz wraps up during this massive road maintenance blitz. “On any given night more than 100 workers were on the ground in Melbourne and more than 1,500 jobs were supported right across the state.” Crews attended more than 2200 out-ofhours callouts, totalling more than 5000 working hours, to remove hazards like trees or debris,attending accidents and assessing roads impacted by fires or floods. A whopping 15,000 tonnes of recycled materials - such as glass, plastic and tyres - was also used in the creation of more durable country roads. Good eating Students at St Patrickâ€™s Primary School Pakenham have been getting their hands dirty in the garden, growing fresh produce to use in their kitchen classes. The program, which teaches children the importance of sustainability and healthy eating, is popular at the school, with students sharing the dishes they prepare with their classmates and volunteers. Family’s survival struggle By Brendan Rees David* (not his real name) says his family recently sold their furniture just to meet expenses during the stage four lockdown. The Berwick resident and temporary visa holder lost his job as a result of Covid-19 and the Brotherhood of St Laurence has helped him gain casual work but his family is in severe debt. “I have a lot of debts as a result of Covid-19 and I need a lot of help to pay for my registration, my bills, my expenses and rent as well,” David says, who migrated to Australia from Africa with his wife, 15-year-old son and a 17-year-old daughter in 2013. His family doesn’t have a Medicare card or enough money to cover their son’s hyperactivity medication. And they also aren’t eligible for Red Cross hardship support given David’s casual work. According to the Refugee Council of Australia, a recent report predicted almost 19,000 asylum seekers and refugees on temporary visas would lose hours or jobs as a result of the Covid-related economic downturn. They aren’t eligible for JobKeeper or JobSeeker on the basis of their visa status, forcing people into poverty. The council also said research predicted a 12 per cent rise in homelessness among them. Some also don’t have access to Medicare and there are as many as 16,000 children of people seeking asylum in Australia. This is putting considerable pressure on service providers and charities, which are experiencing a dramatic increase in demand for their services as they struggle to provide emergency accommodation, food packages and other lifelines to those affected. David says he works up to 20 hours a day as an Uber driver just to make ends meet. He earns $2080 a month and pays $1650 a month in rent, leaving little left over for living expenses.

“I was working in a good position before, as I was working in a big organisation and Uber as well but as a result of Covid I almost lost 85 per cent of my income,” he says, adding his wife is unable to find work due to an English fluency barrier. “I knocked all doors of charities to help me to pay some of our expenses and most of them help in a way or another.” To add to their burden, David says being in

isolation due to the Covid-19 lockdown is “not good for all of us” and their daughter who is in year 12 has struggled with the shift to remote learning. “The communication among the classmates is lost and the interaction with the teachers is very weak,” he says, adding his family also struggled to afford internet connection. But despite their challenges, David is remaining optimistic.

“I try to do my best, I wake up every day maybe around 4am (to be available for work),” he says. “I don’t mind of course to do anything to support my family, I have no other people to help.” For national emergency relief services, including food, clothing, vouchers or help with bills, contact your local arm of The Salvation Army or St Vincent De Paul.

There is a new face of the Yakkerboo Festival, Pakenham’s most iconic event each year. Michael Porter has announced he will be stepping down as president of the Yakkerboo committee, after nine long years of leadership, dedication and success. Scott Griffiths-Hewitt was sworn in as the new president at a virtual annual general meeting via Zoom held on Wednesday 26 August. The committee was also pleased to welcome five new members but farewelled two who will continue to help on the festival days. The new committee includes Jeanine Pushman as secretary and Debbie Douglas as treasurer. Outgoing president Mr Porter has been on the executive committee for the past 10 years, running it as president for nine of those years. He has decided to remain on the committee for one more year as vice president to assist Mr Griffiths-Hewitt in his transition. During Mr Porter’s decade on the committee, he has seen many changes to the festival. “Originally in Bourke we had to move to PB Ronald Reserve for the 2019 festival as we had outgrown Bourke Park and it was getting harder to close off all the streets we needed to,” he said. “The festival now has over 100 stalls, four

major rides, as well as numerous smaller rides, the Saturday night part of our festival we have live bands, and the all-important fireworks. “The festival always brings our community together as one and shows just what the Cardinia Shire is made of.” Mr Griffiths-Hewitt said the committee is well underway in organising the 2021 event which will be held on May 1 and 2, with the theme ‘superheroes’. He acknowledged the parade entrants’ excitement for next year’s festival. “With Covid forcing us to cancel the 2020 festival we will be back better than ever for 2021,” Mr Griffiths-Hewitt said. “On behalf of the festival committee we want to thank Michael Porter and his wife Vicki Ferguson for all the time, energy and ideas they have put into the festival the past 10 years. “These two are as we like to call them Mr and Mrs Yakkerboo, whilst they were leading the committee into another festival they also planned and got married. At just 33, Megan Jordan is in the fight of her life. The doting Narre Warren mum of 10 was diagnosed with cervical cancer 12 months ago and now doctors have told her it’s terminal. After undergoing months of chemotherapy and radiotherapy, she believed she was in the clear. Then, recently, while in lockdown, doctors delivered the devastating news that the cancer had returned in a more aggressive form while she was 26 weeks pregnant. Megan had one session of chemotherapy but had to stop the treatment until her baby was born at 32 weeks due to the potential risk of harm to her unborn child. She now has six to 12 months to live but there is one last glimmer of hope for the brave mum as doctors attempt immunotherapy treatment, a type of drug treatment that uses the body’s own immune system to fight cancer. It is different to chemotherapy, which works by killing cancer cells. However, the rate of success varies depending on the type of cancer, but doctors hope it will prolong Megan’s diagnosis and offer her more time with her kids. Among those touched by Megan’s heartbreaking ordeal is friend Brooke Moller of Pakenham, who has launched a GoFundMe. Despite having never met in person, the pair began chatting six years ago via Brooke’s Facebook page called ‘Mum Life Australia - You Got This!’ a social page for mums to connect. Brooke said the fundraiser was the least she could do to help Megan whom she described as a “genuinely nice person”. “We’ve never met up and had a coffee or hung out,” she said. “We don’t do barbecues together. It’s just that for me, the second I saw that on her own Facebook (page), she was trying to fund her own funeral so she’s not leaving any debt to her kids, that broke my heart

Paving the way forward By sports editor Russell Bennett “You can’t be what you can’t see”. That’s the saying guiding Pakenham Netball Club president and revered community sporting figure Marg Jones in her role as part of AFL Outer East’s new women’s advisory group. The newly-formed group is made up of a number of key figures from within clubland across the region, as well as region general manager Aaron Bailey and Nicole Kimpton and Josette O’Donnell from Eastern Health. AFL Outer East’s finance officer Sheryn Harbert is also part of the group, along with a number of the most influential ladies from within clubland across the region - including Jones, Bec St Mart from Cranbourne, AnneMarie Ebbels from the Healesville juniors, Mount Evelyn’s Sue Harty, and Broadford Football Netball Club president Bonnie Cavanagh. More than half of all participants in the region’s competitions are female, and the advisory group aims to promote the involvement - and development - of women in leadership roles within clubs. “Creating inclusive environments for females in our competitions and our region needs to extend past participation on game day,” Bailey explained. “We are committed to ensuring we create opportunities for women to take senior leadership roles, both committee and coaching. “With over 50 per cent of our participants being female, this is a responsibility we take really seriously. “This is a wonderful initiative and we thank our current female leaders and Eastern Health for embracing and driving a program such as this that provides increased opportunity and ongoing support for the women of Outer East.” Jones’ involvement over a long period of time at Pakenham is the stuff of legend, but she’d be the last to admit that. Like so many others throughout the region, she’s far more interested in rolling the sleeves up and furthering her club and her community in the sporting space. “This is a wonderful initiative by AFL Outer East, and I feel very honoured to be invited to participate and represent Pakenham, and (have) the opportunity, personally, to work with this inspiring group of women,” she said. “With the growing profile of women’s sport, and the momentum only increasing, I personally think it is important for the young, talented girls and women coming through grassroots community sport on and off the field and court to see role models around them. “I personally love the saying: ‘You can’t be what you can’t see’. “I have been on committees since I was 18

The potential and opportunity here is inspiring.” Cavanagh, a proud Aboriginal woman, already has an impressive reputation in Outer East circles - despite Broadford not yet having taken to the region’s courts or fields. And it’s easy to see why. “The league is very proactive in a number of areas and they’ve been wanting to raise the profile of women within the league, and promote female inclusion - finding a way that you can address matters that are affecting female footballers and netballers, and also the volunteers around the league,” she explained. “I think the concept is a great show of leadership and it’s a genuine means of increasing

female participation. “We’ve come into the league as a new club (in 2020), and what I’ve found really impressive is that when they’re making decisions that directly impact on a particular group, they’re making sure that the right people are at the table when those decisions are made. “If you’re trying to make it equal, don’t make it about one group over another. “My passion is diversity and inclusion, and if you’re trying to have a good, broad understanding that’s reflective of your community, you really need to have a really good commitment to making sure you’ve got a diverse group that’s very inclusive. “You never know what people’s backgrounds or talents may include. It’s about giving people a safe platform to get the confidence to show what they can bring to the table.” Cavanagh said she’s proud to be involved in an initiative that empowers people - whoever they may be, regardless of background or gender - to take a more active role in how their

clubs and competitions are run and led. “It doesn’t matter if someone is young, or a woman, or from a different background - everyone should have an opportunity to have their say or some input so they can genuinely contribute to their clubs. “With this group, we’ve got the opportunity to give advice that’s actually taken on board. This isn’t just a box ticking exercise for diversity - this is very genuine, and there’s a very real opportunity to bring in some great ideas and events.” The women’s advisory group is set to support AFL Outer East in developing a gender equality policy, advising the commission on matters affecting women and girls, and priorities for the 2021 season. AFL Outer East’s commitment to inclusion has also extended to the all abilities space, with the region inviting its clubs to become ‘All Abilities Centres’ moving forward. This is set to include information sessions for families within the region, explaining what’s on offer.

These Lions are roaring By Nick Creely While the Pakenham Lions Netball Club was unable to take to the court in the 2020 AFL Outer East season, the family-like culture at Toomuc Reserve has ensured it has wrapped its collective arms around each every member of its community. These have been trying times, and although devastated at how 2020 has unfolded - president Marg Jones said from AFL Outer East, its members, players, and anyone within the community, its been vital to stay connected throughout the challenges the year has presented. “We recognise the incredible work that Aaron Bailey and his team from AFL Outer East did in trying to have a season,” she told the Star News. “During the challenging times that we are all experiencing with Covid-19 in particular the two lockdowns, we set about ensuring we remained engaged with every valued member and acknowledging and supporting our loyal partners in our club sponsors. “As president I am so very proud of our off the court team represented by 20 passionate committee members together with our coaching team for their tireless efforts in ensuring we offered our players (ranging from U9s to A Grade) weekly zoom sessions covering fitness, skill work, yoga, team catch ups together with inspirational club and player videos, club emails, text messages, phone calls since March. “We wanted to ensure that every single person from our netty family felt connected and knew as the old netty saying goes, ‘’here if you need’.” Jones said that providing the players with necessary support for their mental health and wellbeing has been all the more important. “When we spoke about our players’ mental health and wellbeing we turned to the professionals in SALT (Sport and Life Training) to assist us with providing sessions for every player from our U13s through to seniors together with our coaches and committee,” she said. “SALT’s Club Re-Connect sessions were empowering and taught valuable life skills. “We are truly grateful to Netball Victoria and WorkSafe for their support and funding our U17s session, together with AFL Outer East, Bendigo Bank and branch manager, Eddy Leo from Pakenham for their support in funding these vital sessions for the benefit of every player, coach and committee member.” The club has also been recognised by Netball Victoria for its work with SALT and have won a Zoom session with Vixens star Caitlin

Thwaites, with Jones and the club incredibly excited for the opportunity. Jones also said that club chaplain, David Sollberger has been an integral part in dealing with the challenges faced this year. “David has also done an outstanding job which we are so very fortunate having him in this role,” she said. “What some don’t know is David has an extensive elite netball playing career having played and captained the Victorian Mens team and we are so pleased that he will again be coaching a senior team in 2021.” As the Lions now gear up for the 2021 season from an on-court perspective, the club has reappointed highly-regarded coaches Karen Meredith and Matt Cooke, with the pair set to continue their fine work. The pair has extensive Victorian Netball League (VNL) coaching experience together with Victoria’s Talent Academy, and Jones said that the announcement has come with a great deal of excitement. “The outstanding commitment, dedication and work that Karen and Matt together with our team coaches have shown at Pakenham is exceptional,” she said. “Karen will continue in the role of head coach and oversee our entire netball program, while Karen and Matt will co-coach our A and B Grade teams. “Karen and Matt recognise the importance of our junior program and pathway to seniors and we are excited to have Matt taking our U17 Blue and Karen our U15 Blue teams in 2021. “We are extremely proud of the quality coaching program that we offer at Pakenham. The club is now working through the appointment of our 2021 team coaches which is progressing positively.” Pakenham was highly-successful in the 2019 season, clinching a B Grade premiership against ROC in a thriller, as well as winning the 13 under flag and making a total of four grand finals. Jones said that the initial responses from players in regards to the 2021 were overwhelmingly positive, with the club desperate to get back to Toomuc Reserve and get back into community sport. “We can’t wait until the lockdown is over and getting back home to Toomuc Reserve as we continue to plan for a bigger and better 2021 for both our mid-week teams that play at Cardinia Life PNA competition and AFL Outer East teams who play proudly alongside our football club,” she said.
