Rail risk takers! By Brendan Rees From distracted pedestrians to a car slamming into a train, alarming footage has emerged of recent close calls on the Pakenham and Cranbourne lines. While less people are travelling due to Melbourne’s stage-four restrictions, the Transport Department has urged people to be alert and pay attention to crossing signals and signs. It comes as the Department released shocking video during Rail Safety Week to highlight the risks people take with recent near misses recorded at Dandenong, Beaconsfield and Cardinia Road. Metro train driver Stephen King knows all too well the “far reaching effects” of peoples risky behaviour on the railway. “I personally know of colleagues of mine that have been involved in one incident and have been forced to resign from their roles,” he said. “They’ve actually had to move on and find another career. “The impact of these incidents isn’t just for that one person who is up the front, which is the train driver, but it is to absolutely everybody - family, friends, colleagues and everyone else concerned.” The Department has documented a number of dangerous acts including people ignoring pedestrian gates to run across the tracks and driving through boom gates when traffic has banked up, which “can have devastating consequences resulting in deaths and serious injuries”. Near misses and trespassers on the network result in delays to services and can cause significant distress to train and tram drivers and other witnesses. On average there were 328 trespasser incidents each month on the metropolitan network in the year to July. On the regional network, there is a near miss every four days on average. The State Government has committed $10 million to installing fencing at key metropolitan and regional locations across the rail network, to help improve safety and protect lives. Although Rail Safety Week finished on 21 August, the Department has stressed rail safety was all year round. “Serious incidents and near misses on our rail network can cost lives and have devastating impacts on drivers and other passengers so please take care when around trains and trams,” a Transport Department spokesperson said. “Please put away your mobile phones when at rail crossings, only cross at marked crossings and stay behind the yellow line at platforms and tram stops.”

Fighting for the homeless By Mitchell Clarke A charter addressing the “urgent need” for social housing and homelessness services within the Cardinia Shire has been endorsed by all councillors. The regional local government homelessness and social housing charter is made up of 13 south eastern and eastern councils who collectively identified both homelessness and the “chronic shortage” of affordable housing as a significant issue. The group of councils - which represents more than two million residents - will work in partnership with the Federal and State Government, as well as public and private sector organisations, to increase the provision of social housing and respond to homelessness in their respective communities. As part of the initiative, Cardinia Shire Council will scope land which could be re-purposed for adaptable housing needs, while also advocating for mandatory inclusionary zoning within developments. According to an ABS Census in 2016, 220 people were sleeping rough within the Cardinia Shire at any given time, whether that be living in their car, on the streets or couch-surfing. Housing issues and family violence were the biggest contributors to homelessness at 39 and 38 percent respectively, while financial issues; 11 percent, interpersonal relationships; four percent and health; two percent, were

Most people accessing homelessness services were living on “extremely low incomes” with 76 percent reliant on Centrelink and 14 percent having no income at all. Central Ward councillor Michael Schilling described the figures as “tragic”. He said the
council should be advocating to developers to allocate two percent of their developable land to affordable housing projects. “Council has a proud history of supporting those in the community who need it the most,” Cr Schilling said. “The charter really shows a collective power
that local government can have when unified for a common cause.” A report presented to council stated the most impactful activity that local governments can undertake to reduce homelessness is to support the delivery of homes that people can afford. It also recommended that council’s needed to understand homelessness in their area, identify their current response and develop strategies to fill in the gaps. Ranges Ward councillor Leticia Wilmot said the Covid-19 pandemic would only a further negative impact on the housing crisis. “The need for social housing will be increased as a result of this crisis that we’re in, and we won’t have any idea of what that really looks like until we’re well and truly on the other side of this,” Cr Wilmot said. “The longer it does go on, the greater the impact will be for sure ... not only for people who are currently homeless, but also the impact it will have on people who lose their jobs and can’t afford their mortgages.” Central Ward councillor Carol Ryan wanted to draw attention to vulnerable women in the over 55 age category who were at risk of homelessness. “They’re the forgotten ones in all this,” she said. “We need to look at every situation and try and improve the conditions and the home environment for people within our community.”

The upcoming Cardinia Shire local government elections have been given the green light to go ahead, despite calls to postpone the vote due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Scheduled for Saturday 24 October, Local Government Minister Shaun Leane confirmed the elections can proceed following advice from Chief Health Officer Brett Sutton. “The Chief Health Officer has advised that October represents a period when risk is likely to be substantially lower than at present, and there are no compelling public health grounds for the elections to be delayed,” Mr Leane said on Wednesday 19 August. Mr Leane said Professor Sutton had been working with the Victorian Electoral Commission (VEC) to ensure appropriate physical distancing, cleaning, hygiene and workforce planning had been considered and met the VEC’s CovidSafe plans. “This decision was not made lightly and is based on the best public health advice available,” he said. “I am pleased Victorian communities can have their say on their local government representatives at democratic council general elections as planned.”
The clarification comes after recent media speculation about whether, in fact, the elections should be called off. When questioned, a Cardinia Shire Council spokeswoman said the council had actively taken part in discussions with the Municipal Association of Victoria (MAV). The Municipal Association of Victoria has been calling for a 12-month deferral of council elections, citing the principle of ‘free and fair’ local government elections was under “significant strain”. “Our position remains the same,” a MAV spokeswoman told the Gazette. According to VEC Electoral Commissioner Warwick Gately, postal voting was “safe” and of “high integrity”. “The situation remains dynamic and the VEC continues to actively monitor conditions and restrictions,” Mr Gately said. “Additional measures in place include increased distancing in election offices, limiting face-to-face contact, enforcing mask wearing where mandated by the Victorian Government, and moving operational activity online whenever possible.” For councillors and candidates, a set of Safe Campaigning Guidelines have been developed in consultation with the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS).

The period of remote learning is creating stronger connections among the St Patrick’s Primary School community. Staff and students at the Pakenham school have adapted well to the online learning shift, and despite the uncertainty and disruption, a number of positives have been identified. The connection between teachers and parents has been strengthened, according to Year 6 teacher Lauren Rietschel. Ms Rietschel has been in touch with parents each week during the remote learning period, which is something that isn’t usually possible during any regular school week. “It’s been really great to be able to build those relationships, and check-in with each other,” she explained. “The students have adapted so well. They understand what’s going on, and that we need to keep everyone safe.” Year 6 student and school captain, Vaughan Gridley, has also been able to search for the positives throughout the experience. He said he’d never imagined that he would lead the school as captain during a global pandemic. “I think remote learning has been an education for students and teachers alike. I’m grateful that we learnt how to use the technology at school before all this started, because now accessing it at home is easy,” he said. “I look forward to our weekly Google Meets and the chance to have some sort of social interaction with one another.” St Patrick’s Primary School principal Simon Dell’Oro said it was heartening to watch the school community come together to support each other and make the most of remote learning. “I thank our staff, students and families for the way they have adapted to the changes that have been imposed on them this year,” he said. “I’m so impressed by the resilience and responsibility they have shown. Particularly in the older children, we have seen them blossom into independent and self-motivated learners who are able to seek help when they need it. These are really valuable life-skills.”

Farmers market reprieve By Brendan Rees Stall holders will be allowed to trade at the Berwick Farmers Market after it was abruptly banned in what was labelled as a “shambolic debacle”. It comes after the State Government moved to close farmers’ markets across the state from a list of permitted food retailers under Covid-19 stage-four restrictions on Friday evening 21 August, leaving many farmers blindsided and forced to cancel markets before the weekend. But following public outrage and pressure from the Victorian Farmers’ Markets Association (VFMA), the State Government had backflipped its decision by 8.30pm last Friday, allowing farmers’ markets to stay open. Hanna Hamod, a Baxter farmer who runs a fresh fish stall at the Berwick Farmers Market, said the decision had left his small business “extremely vulnerable” and resulted in insufficient time to prepare for last weekend. He said the last-minute reversal also meant “there was nowhere near the customer volumes because everyone was confused” when he and other farmers traded at farmers’ markets last weekend. “We don’t know what the government’s going to do next. We have no security in what they’re going to do,” he said, but added: “To now know that Berwick and a few of the other markets just gives us a bit of certainty”. Geoff Rankin from the VFMA who also oversees the Berwick Farmers Market, said the decision came without warning and a “total shock to the industry” and the only way it was found out was when someone had viewed the Department of Health and Human Services website. “A few of us in the industry... mustered our combined effort to ask for a please explain from the State Government and a request for the decision to be overturned,” he said.
The Berwick Farmers Market will hold its next market on 12 September. The Berwick Farmers Market, which Casey Council ordered to shut down in March despite the State Government saying food markets could stay open, will hold its next market on Saturday 12 September at the Old Cheese Factory thanks to the efforts of Mr Rankin who pushed the council to lift its ban, allowing trade to resume in August. A Victorian Government spokesperson said after concerns were raised around density requirements, the Chief Health Officer and the
Minister for Agriculture reaffirmed that farmers’ markets could continue for takeaway. “We want to ensure Victorians have access to the fantastic local produce our farmers and artisan producers have to offer, keeping local providers afloat during this pandemic,” the spokesperson said. “Markets are limited to takeaway food and drink sales only - to be consumed offsite - with Covid safe restrictions in place including density requirements, signage and cleaning.”

Schools and community groups can now apply for sun shade grants thanks to a State Government sun smart initiative. Narre Warren South MP Gary Maas announced the Shade Grants Program round five had open and encouraged all those eligible to apply. Under the Shade Grants Program government schools can apply for up to $25,000 for shade development while eligible community groups can apply for grants of up to $50,000, both of which can include up to $700 for sun protection items. Applicants may also request up to $700 for sun protection items only. Since the initiative began 1325 shade grants have been awarded totalling more than $12 million since 2015. The State Government said it had continued to invest in prevention and early detection of skin cancer with a $15.1 million commitment, including $10 million to the future of the Shade Grants Program from 2019 to 2023. “Two in three Australians will be diagnosed with skin cancer by the time they’re 70 and yet it’s one of the most preventable forms of cancer,” Mr Maas said. “That’s why the Andrews Government’s commitment to the Shade Grants Program and skin cancer prevention in our communities is so important.” The schools application stream closes on 28 August and the community group stream closes on 11 September. A masked and muffled mix By Alivia Mantel* One in six Australians suffer from a hearing impairment, according to the Australian Network on Disability, which can make every-day communication difficult. For these Australians, the introduction of mandatory masks in public spaces, a new Covid-19 prevention measure, has made communication even more difficult, a problem that many members of our community have overlooked. Since the government announced this new Covid-19 restriction, hearing-impaired workers within our community have been facing aggression from customers when encountering issues with normal communication. Holly Townley, an employee at Pakenham Officeworks, has made the decision to wear a badge displaying that she is half-deaf, after having many negative experiences with customers. “I’ve been lip reading my whole life. It’s a skill most deaf people use, especially if they don’t know sign language,” Ms Townley says. “It’s been harder recently; I often misunderstand customers.” She claims she has had “a lot of encounters with people who yell and swear, especially when asked to repeat themselves”. Ms Townley says choosing to wear the badge is “a personal decision to keep (her) safe”. Despite the badge clearly asking others to “please be patient” as she is “hearing impaired”, Ms Townley continues to encounter “customers who still don’t understand or care”. This is the “first time in [her] life” that she has had to wear a badge telling people she is hearing impaired, an outcome that represents the enormous unprecedented effects of Covid-19 on the community. The pandemic has resulted in difficulties
Chris Soumilas wears a mask made by his wife Maree. 212090 that many have yet to consider, resulting in aggressive customers like those that Ms Townley has dealt with. “I want people to be aware that they have to be patient and respectful,” she says. “You have to be willing to help the other person, especially when speaking softly or in a busy environment.” Ms Townley has taken to posting on her social media, in an attempt to spread her message and raise awareness for the hearing-impaired members of the community. “I want to make people aware that the next few weeks or months may be hard for those

who are deaf,” says Ms Townley in a post on Facebook. “Even just repeating something a few times, as much as that may seem frustrating, can make someone’s day easier”. Ms Townley also shared a video on Instagram that demonstrates gestures adapted from Australian sign language, used by those with hearing impairments to request a pen and paper or ask someone to type out their words when wearing masks. The simple gestures, while not being a part of Auslan, are clear and easy to understand. The creator of the video, @auslan_otd on
Instagram, writes there are “no excuses” for ignoring these simple gestures. “Don’t neglect us during this difficult time,” they write in the caption of the video. In our current social climate, these activists are asking for patience and understanding, requesting our help in maintaining effective communication. Servo struck by burglars Police are investigating a burglary at a Lysterfield service station that is believed linked to an attempted ATM theft in Dandenong in July. Two male offenders allegedly forced their way into the Lysterfield Road servo about 5.40am on 5 July, stealing a number of confectionary items before fleeing. On this occasion, the males were using a blue early to mid-90s E-Class W210 Mercedes Benz with no front bonnet ornament. Police believe the pair also tried to allegedly steal an ATM from a market on Clow Street about 3am the following day. They were unsuccessful and left the scene empty-handed, police say. Investigators from Greater Dandenong Crime Investigation Unit have released photos and close-circuit television of two males they believe may be able to assist with their inquiries, along with pictures of the Mercedes. The first male is perceived to be Caucasian, tall with a thin build, large nose and has dark features. Aziz back to face the heat By Brendan Rees Besieged former Casey mayor Sam Aziz, who left for Egypt 10 months ago, has finally returned to Australia. Mr Aziz is a ’person of interest’ regarding an ongoing Independent Broad-based Anticorruption Commission, where it is alleged he had dealings with a developer, however, he flew overseas last October, just before the hearings began. An IBAC spokesperson confirmed the watchdog was “aware of the recent return to Australia of Mr Aziz” who remains a focus of IBAC’s Operation Sandon, “an ongoing investigation into allegations of corruption concerning Casey Council“. “We intend to resume public hearings as soon as practical, in line with the directions of the Chief Health Officer,“ the spokesperson said. “For legal and operational reasons, IBAC is not able to provide further comment at this time.“ Mr Aziz has been teaching at a business school in Cairo but it is understood his contract ended in July. He last spoke to Star News in February, saying his lecturing duties at Bloom Business School were “sporadic” as he battled a heart failure condition. According to The Age, Mr Aziz flew into Sydney last week and is now in hospital. The nature of his condition is not known but in a court document filed by his lawyers earlier this year it claimed Mr Aziz had ongoing health conditions including a chronic heart condition, diabetes and mental health concerns. He will face a two-week mandatory Covid-19 quarantine in Sydney after all international flights that were scheduled to land in Melbourne, where Mr Aziz lives, have been

Australia’s borders are closed but only Australian citizens, residents and immediate family members can travel to Australia. Court documents revealed in November last year that Mr Aziz had brought forward his return flight from Cairo to Melbourne by a month, however on the day of his return flight, Mr Aziz was said to be “suffering from symptoms including heart palpitations, shortness of breath and was visibly perspiring” and
therefore had to cancel his flight. The former councillor left Australia after IBAC investigators executed search warrants on his properties in Berwick and Roxburgh Park. A significant amount of Mr Aziz’s personal property, including documents and electronic devices were seized during the raids, court documents stated. Mr Aziz allegedly sold his home in Berwick prior to fleeing the country but the sale of the house was seized as proceeds of crime - with a
restraining order also in place. Mr Aziz is alleged to have committed offences including misconduct in public office, bribery of a public official, and dealing with the proceeds of crime, according to a court document filed by IBAC with the County Court. He continued to claim paid leave from the City of Casey while overseas until the State Government moved to sack the council in February. Mr Aziz could not be reached for comment.

Paws up for Petember By Mitchell Clarke A Pakenham woman - and her furry four legged friend - plan to raise much needed funds for kids in need of assistance dogs. Cardinia Lakes resident Nadia Rodrigo will dress up her dog, Harley, in a different costume for each week of September as part of the ‘Petember’ initiative. Petember is the biggest doggie dress-up com-paw-tition, which aims to raise awareness and funds for kids in need of life-changing Variety assistance dogs. “Each week in September we will be dressing Harley up to the assigned theme to raise funds for kids in need of assistance dogs,” Ms Rodrigo explained. From taking photos of Harley working from home to dressing him up as a celebrity lookalike, every cent raised will go towards linking kids in need with their very own Harley. Ms Rodrigo was inspired to take part in the initiative after learning of the important role that assistant dogs play in the lives of children with epilepsy, autism and anxiety. “This funding can and will change the lives of children in need,” she said. “I think that this is such a great thing as it allows the child to become much more confident. “It’s also a fun and worthwhile activity since we are all stuck in lockdown at the moment.” In the last financial year, Variety - the Children’s Charity, funded nine assistance dogs but this year alone, eight children are currently on the waiting list.

Scoring wins off the court By Cam Lucadou-Wells Black Rhinos basketballers have swapped dunking baskets for packing food parcels during the pandemic. Under the umbrella of Afri-Aus Care, the players have delivered food and hygiene products for families in the organisation’s women’s groups in the South East since March. After five long months, there’s no doubt the young athletes are missing their basketball. But now they’re scoring the satisfaction of helping families in need with the weekly food drops - about 20 in Greater Dandenong, 35 in Pakenham and Cranbourne. “It’s about connecting - they connect to families that they are not otherwise in contact with,“ Afri-Aus Care Founder Selba Gondoza Luka says. The need is certainly real during Covid, with job and work-hour losses hitting the community hard, Ms Luka says. Afri-Aus Care supply households of women and children with culturally-appropriate food items for instance. It also offers culturally-appropriate counselling and referrals to appropriate agencies and GPs as the community suffers high rising levels of depression and anxiety. More support in this area is needed, Ms Luka said, Since the pandemic, the women’s groups can no longer meet in person. Beforehand, they’d regularly gather for gardening, sewing, cooking and help with domestic violence, mental health and parenting skills. But Afri-Aus Care is keeping in touch online and through food deliveries. Personally, Ms Luka takes refuge in morning prayer and meditation. It’s her “self-care“ routine that helps her “help people to help others“. “That’s what makes me happy. That I’m able to wake up and do the work I’ve always loved - which is to help people and mentoring the young people at Afri-Aus Care who have become leaders of today“ Her group, her work is built on the concept of ’Ubuntu and the Positive Change Model’ that is, “harmony and humanity,“ she says. “Under the Ubuntu concept, if someone is going to harm the family our community would do anything to protect you.“ Afri-Aus Care is flanked by young leaders like youth coordinator Atong Ayom. “It’s all worth it seeing the reactions in the end,“ she says of the food relief service. “It’s a lot of work getting done, I love doing it.“ A law and youth work student, Ms Ayom is also support worker for “my boys“ at the Black Rhinos Basketball B Team. It’s a basketball program that doubles as crime prevention. She’s there to support them with all kinds of issues - like getting a job, fine struggles or family issues. Meanwhile, digital content creator Vivian Tong who is a social worker at Afri Aus Care is on hand to “capture the moment of helping“.

Ever heard the term “elevator pitch”? If not, this is an American term given to the short time (less than 30 seconds) that you may have to pitch your business. It derives from the scenario in which you and someone else enter an “elevator” (lift) on a high level floor and as the doors close the other person asks you what you do for a living. The intent is to gain interest from the other person so that by the time the elevator reaches the ground floor, they continue the discussion with you about your business. In practice, having an elevator pitch is very useful since you never know when you might get asked about your business, e.g. networking functions, conferences, promotional events etc and having a practical way to gain interest in your company within a very limited timeframe can be very valuable indeed. Most business owners when asked about their business will tend to focus very much on what they do, e.g. “I run a manufacturing business that produces high quality steel products” or “ I run an accounting company that maximises tax returns” and whilst these may well be statements of fact, they are unlikely to result in any particular interest in their products or services, so why bother? Well, the reason both these (and similar) statements provide little value is that neither is inspiring or unique (there are many businesses that can claim to “produce high quality steel products” and many accountants that will assure clients that they can “maximise tax returns”). Why? Because statements like these focus on what the business does, not why they do it and according to Simon Sinek, “people don’t buy what you do, they buy why you do it”. To illustrate the point, if you currently source products and services for your business, ask yourself whether you could purchase any of these cheaper elsewhere? I am sure that for most businesses the answer would be yes, but
the reason people are prepared to pay more for goods or services from one particular supplier is that they trust and value what they do, i.e. they understand why this business does what it does (e.g. provides a better level of customer service/support, supports local charities, takes care of its staff etc). Contrary to popular belief, price is not always the primary consideration especially if making a larger purchase. A good elevator pitch should contain words, ideally contentious, that actually differentiate the business from the competition. Words like “quality”, “cheapest”, “great customer service”, “best” etc are not true differentiators and will be used by many (competing) businesses. The reason I suggest that you include something contentious (but true!) in your elevator pitch is that you actually want people to challenge you about this because then the dialogue on your business has started! Many years ago I worked with an electrical manufacturing client that derived an elevator pitch along the following lines: “We use our agility, expertise and experience in electronics to provide enduring, high quality, innovative solutions for industry – worldwide”. The one word that really stands out in this statement is “enduring” meaning long-lasting in a positive sense, you rarely see this stated. They actually wanted people to challenge them on this since they sold products worldwide including into New Zealand and when the first major earthquake struck in Christchurch back in 2010 (my wife and I were actually there at the time, quite an experience!), when their competitors’ products fell over, theirs were still able to function. This was therefore a great example of how they could genuinely claim to make “enduring high quality, innovative solutions for industry” and use this as a key differentiator. Obviously, if they started to talk to someone about their product sales into New Zealand, few would bother to listen attentively, but with a carefully crafted elevator pitch that invited a challenge, it paved the way for the business to provide a unique story to attest to their unique abilities. Cops’ ‘dead letter’ search Narre Warren police are hoping to locate the owner of stolen burial documents which were found during an intercept at Clyde North in May. Police intercepted a car with two occupants inside on Blackhazel Crescent about 5am on 6 May. Officers searched the vehicle and allegedly found drugs, weapons and suspected stolen items including burial documents, police say. Investigators have made attempts to locate the rightful owner but have been un-
successful so far. “The documents date back to 1867 and investigators believe they would hold sentimental value to its owner,” a Victoria Police spokesperson said. Investigators have released images of three separate documents in the hope someone recognises them and comes forward. Anyone who believes the documents may belong to them is asked to contact Narre Warren Police Station on 9705 3111.

TRAR’s due by 28 August The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) has reminded businesses that pay contractors for certain services that they may need to lodge a Taxable payments annual report (TPAR) with the ATO by 28 August 2020. This is the first year that businesses that pay contractors to provide road freight, information technology, security, investigation, or surveillance services may need to lodge a TPAR with the ATO. This is in addition to those businesses providing building and construction, cleaning, or courier services that are already required to report. “In response to Covid-19 many businesses have had to quickly adapt, and many have needed to contract out more services. We also know many contractors are struggling right now. It is not fair if an honest contractor misses out on business because a competitor is under-cutting them by doing things like under-declaring or not declaring income. The TPAR helps us shed light on payments to contractors and keep things fair,” ATO Assistant Commissioner Peter Holt said. Businesses should take the time to check if they need to lodge a TPAR and to make sure it is lodged with the ATO by 28 August 2020. The ATO website ato.gov.au/TPAR has information that businesses or their advisers can use to quickly determine if they need to lodge a TPAR. “Many restaurants, cafes, grocery stores, pharmacies and retailers have started paying contractors this year to deliver their goods to customers as a result of COVID-19. These businesses may not have previously needed to lodge a TPAR. However, if the total payments received for these deliveries or courier services are ten per cent or more of the total annual business income, you’ll

Additionally, some commercial software providers have now integrated automated ABN checking into their accounting software packages, which makes ABN checking more streamlined during the year as well as when it comes time to lodge the TPAR. This sustained effort has led to a $500 million improvement in reporting of payments to valid ABNs across the building and construction industry,” Mr Holt said. Lodging the TPAR online is quick and simple. There are four options : Check if your business accounting software can create and lodge the TPAR. Talk to your software provider if you’re not sure. Complete and lodge your TPAR through the ATO’s Business portal. Individuals and sole traders can lodge using a myGov account linked to the ATO. Registered tax professionals can also lodge the TPAR on behalf of their clients.

Entertainment goes online By Tania Phillips Well-known musical director John Foreman is heading back into loungerooms across Australia as part of the Arts Centre Melbourne’s Big Night In program each Wednesday night from 9 September from 7pm. Following the success of the first season, broadcast earlier this year a second season has been commissioned with six new episodes providing more light entertainment from Foreman and the Aussie Pops Orchestra together with artists and musicians live in their own homes. Art Centre Melbourne CEO Claire Spencer AM said the program is part of the centre’s digital program Together With You. “In a time where audiences have had to find new ways to connect with their favourite artists, it has become clear that music and song have the power to tell stories when we often can’t find the words,” she said. “Seeing audiences engage with John, the Aussie Pops Orchestra and some of their favourite artists in these challenging times has been a highlight of the series and why it was such an important initiative for us to bring back.” Before the second season airs, audiences have been treated to two special encore episodes featuring fan favourites David Campbell, Marina Prior, Casey Donovan and Human Nature as some of the best interviews and musical moments from the original digital season. The first was held on Wednesday 26 August while the second will be played 2 September. Almost 50 per cent reported that they had used their acquired infant and child first aid knowledge within six months of undertaking the course. Narre Warren's Shelby Cooke, who performed CPR on her choking two-year-old daughter while paramedics rushed to their home, stressed the importance of first aid training. She believes that had she not received the course through her workplace, her daughter may have suffocated. "I still owe everything to having those skills," she said. "The more people that are equipped with them, the less tragedies we're going to see with children, babies and toddlers. "It's such a frightening thing to go through - so you need to be prepared." The free sessions will be held across the region, including at Beaconhills College, in Pakenham. Topics covered will include choking, fevers, convulsions, burns, drowning, bleeding, caring for an unconscious person, bites and stings and head injuries. A lifesaving Pakenham-based venture, spearheaded by a paramedic and a teacher, has received a federal cash injection to provide free first aid training throughout Melbourne's south-east. Tiny Hearts - founded by sisters Rachael Waia and Nikki Jurcutz - will arm 1800 local parents and carers with the skillsets required to save their children in the event of an emergency. In a regional first, 300 parents are also set to be trained bilingually, catering for Chinese and Afghan communities. Their journey began in a garage, but Tiny Hearts now has a headquarters in Pakenham's Industrial Park - proving that business success is attainable under the most challenging circumstances. Ms Waia, a former educator and volunteer first responder, was first aid trained when she was just 15 years old. She is determined to share her vital knowledge with as many parents as possible. "I've got two kids of my own and I know what it's like when they choke and when they're really sick," she said. "Because we've got such a good report built with our parents, we get a lot of feedback where they say, hey, you literally saved our babies' lives. "I love what I do - waking up and making a difference." Tiny Hearts worked in conjunction with the South East Melbourne Primary Health Network to secure the federal grant. The organisation also hopes to reduce the number of inappropriate admissions to the emergency department and create a better

Rallying around Ryan By sports editor Russell Bennett As Ryan Frazer prepares for his biggest fight yet, he’s spurred on by the astonishing generosity of the local community that’s rallied behind his cause. The popular Kooweerup local turns 22 next month, and has just learned that the brain cancer he first fought with every fibre of his being in 2017 has returned. Ryan hasn’t stepped foot on to an oval for a competitive footy game for his beloved Demons for more than three years, and now that wait doesn’t have a foreseeable end date. But that day - when he can pull on the red and blue guernsey again - well, that’s what’s fuelling him. Ryan - a game development officer with AFL Gippsland - struggles to put into words just how blown away he is by the level of support he’s received from the community since he revealed his second battle with brain cancer. A GoFundMe page, created by one of Ryan’s childhood mates Troy Dolan - himself a highlyrespected Kooweerup footballer - staggeringly raised more than $26,000 within the first two days of it being posted. More than 290 donors contributed, on average, nearly $90 each. Many of those donors Ryan has never met. And the total is still rising. That - at a time when the community is battling with both the health and financial challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic - has left Ryan gobsmacked. “It just made me feel so loved, to be honest,” he said. “Half those people I don’t even know, and they’re donating money at such a tough time for everyone in the community given the pandemic.

Pictures: SUPPLIED “It’s a truly incredible feeling, and it’s really empowering to know so many people are behind me and it’s taken so much pressure off us as a family.” He’s not scared of the battle he’s facing or outcomes beyond his control. He’s just focussed on his fight, with his family and his partner alongside him every step of the journey. Back in July of 2017, after months of misdiagnosis, he was told he had a medulloblastoma - the most common kind of cancerous brain tumour in children, but rare - and often aggressive - in young adults. At just 19, Ryan’s life changed completely. But through it all, his fighting spirit has only continued to strengthen. After having surgery in mid-2017, he underwent six straight weeks of radiation from
that September onwards. Six weeks, five days a week. Remarkably, he’d played footy right up until just a few weeks before his diagnosis. He was nauseous and would vomit most mornings, but he had no idea why. After finally being encouraged to get an MRI - following his initial misdiagnosis - he was at home alone when he got the call to say he had a mass on his brain. “I was more filthy I had to leave home - that I had to be in hospital,” he explained with a laugh. “I was watching the Blazers in the (NBA pre-season) Summer League final and I was absolutely dirty I had to leave. I was watching it in the car on the way to the hospital while everyone else was pretty upset. I’ve been pretty level-headed through it all. I’ve taken it on pretty well, I think.” In January this year, before the Covid pandemic took hold, Ryan - a Portland Trailblazers diehard - headed to the United States, with his family and his girlfriend Megan, for the trip of a lifetime to celebrate being in remission. Ryan simply idolises Blazers superstar Damian Lillard and even got his likeness tattooed on his forearm. In January, not only did Ryan get to meet his hero before a home game against the Charlotte Hornets, he showed him his tattoo. Lillard, one of the NBA’s biggest names, even recognised the game the tattoo was based on, and signed Ryan’s arm so he could add to it the following day. Since Ryan’s initial diagnosis, he’s gone from not fully understanding the role of an oncologist, to being inundated with information on brain cancer. He said his initial diagnosis was “almost a

relief” because he then knew what he was facing - what he could take on, head-on. “Then it became ‘now we know what’s going on, let’s get it fixed. Let’s get on top of it’,” he said. This time around, Ryan became aware that his cancer had returned through a routine sixmonthly scan. “I feel the best I’ve felt in ages - I don’t feel sick at all right now,” he said. “It’s obviously a bigger challenge now - it’s worse because it’s a relapse. I have four little tumours now, and I’ve been told how we’re going to treat it.” The only time he’s felt scared through this second diagnosis was when the subject came up of having palliative care as an option down the line, if his condition worsens. He doesn’t want to know his prognosis, given the uncertainty. “I don’t know what’s going to happen. I could be perfectly fine soon, or it could go the other way - we just don’t know. But what we do have is a lot of treatment options on the table,” he said. “And what I do know is how important it is to just live your best life and keep doing it, because you just don’t know what’s in store.” Ryan will undergo clinical chemotherapy trials through a hospital based in Memphis, Tennessee. They will run for more than two years, but he won’t have to spend each day in hospital. Rachael’s grand triumph By Russell Bennett Rachael Cunningham still can’t quite believe what her horse, Bee Tee Junior, was able to accomplish on Sunday. Cunningham, who trains out of Sportsbet Pakenham in Tynong, was in awe of her nineyear-old as he crossed the line with her great mate Lee Horner on board to claim the timehonoured Grand National Steeplechase over 4500 metres at Ballarat. Astonishingly, it was Bee Tee Junior’s very first steeplechase start. Cunningham explained to the Star News that she always had confidence in the horse. “He was just going so well over the hurdles that we put it off (the switch to the steeplechase), but our thinking with going to the Grand National this year was that he would get in this year on the minimum weight, whereas if he wins a few more races next year and we get to the end of the season he’s going to carry a lot more weight, so he’s a really talented horse,” she said. “He really hasn’t jumped a lot of the bigger fences, so it’s a remarkable effort from the horse. He’s a very talented.” Bee Tee Junior thrived on the Heavy 10 surface against even-money favourite Ablaze claiming a commanding win in the $192,500 to-the-winner feature. “He’s a funny horse,” Cunningham explained. “He won his first start at Warrnambool for us over here, and he only just won by a nose. “Lee Horner, who’s ridden him the whole way through, said he could have won it by 10 lengths - he just needs to race better horses and he’ll match them.” On Sunday, he stormed home to crush the previously undefeated jumper Ablaze by nine lengths. Incredibly, Cunningham has only had the former New Zealand-based horse for a matter of months. “He’s an older horse, and they tend to know

Pictures: COURTESY OF RACING PHOTOS their craft fairly well and they learn to give you what they need to,” she said. “We thought he was as good as those top couple, and he’s proved us right.” Cunningham added that her new star just continues to exceed expectations. “Racing can be so disappointing - you always have goals with every horse,” she said. “It doesn’t matter if it’s a picnic horse - you always set these goals, and not many horses exceed your expectations every time they go out, but he’s one of them. “We seem to just keep raising the bar, and he just keeps meeting it. “There were some pretty tired horses after the run (given the Heavy 10). The track was unbelievably heavy, which we knew he loved - coming from New Zealand he’s run on those bottomless tracks and he loved it. “But he wasn’t tired at all. He pulled up and he was still bouncing around.” He’d never even been tried over the 4500-metre distance before - having run second to Ablaze over 4200 metres in the Grand National Hurdle earlier this month.
“We’re proud of him, but jumps racing is tough and anything can go wrong,” Cunningham said. “We knew going into the run that we couldn’t have him any better (prepared), but you need a lot of luck as well - it doesn’t take much, even a mistake from another horse and it can all go very pear-shaped.” Cunningham is just amazed at what her new stable favourite seems to be capable of. “He arrived at the start of the year, but as soon as he arrived he looked a class above the other horses,” she said. “He’s a magnificent animal, and he’s so arrogant - he thinks he’s the best horse around, which I think helps him. The attitude is half the battle. “He’s a really competitive horse - if you lined him up close to something, he wants to race it. If there’s nothing around him, he lobs around on his own and doesn’t try very hard. “For us with jumps racing, we always try and have a big team every year. “We’ve got the Grand National and the Grand Annual, which I think are the two races
on everyone’s bucket list if you train jumpers, and we’ve managed to tick one of them off now.” And Cunningham is full of nothing but praise of the training centre at Sportsbet Pakenham. “They’ve been really accommodating, because obviously the jumpers need a lot more work than your average racehorse so with the grass gallops and things they’ve been really helpful - especially with this horse,” she said. “We’ve been allowed on the course proper, just to get some really good work into him on a good surface. “In a couple of years it’s going to be amazing. With the hill tracks and things that are coming, I can’t wait. I’m really looking forward to it, and we’ve just got the pool there and that’s really helped.” And as for what’s next for Cunningham and Bee Tee Junior? “Well, I’d like to get a few more of him into the stable - that’d be ideal!” she said with a laugh. “He will actually head to the paddock now. I think he’s earned a break - he’s had a really good preparation. “He’ll head to the paddock, and I’ll spend the next few months until next jumps season trying to find another one like him!”

He’s pictured here (left) making his acceptance speech, with former jockey Simon Marshall by his side, after receiving Country Racing Victoria’s Special Achievement Award in 2013. education and training in the construction industry. “What always struck me about him was that he just had that mentoring spirit and it came out in respect to apprenticeships and his views on training,” Hodge said. “But there were so many of us who benefited from his mentoring approach while he was at the Pakenham Racing Club - myself included. “His research, his meticulous attention to detail, and his ability to just be better-informed were just remarkable. “Add to that his wise head and years of experience, along with his natural business acumen, and he was always someone you could rely on for great advice. “It was a complex time for the PRC, and he was the perfect man for that time. “He had a huge influence in a lot of the strategic framework surrounding the racecourse relocation, as did the likes of Max Mitchell, Ron Carroll, and Don Duffy.” In a June 2002 story on Dore’s OAM - ‘Builder has skills to make a difference’ - he said he owed a lot of what he’d achieved to his father’s teaching. “My father was a very good builder and he worked really hard to get better education and training to stand equal to architects and engineers,” he said. “He was self-taught, and he made sure I had a good education. “When I was three-years-old I knew I wanted to be a builder. “I first went out on sites when I was three.
I’d hold things for someone and I just liked being around the site. “When I got older and had a few of my own tools, I would help at the sites every school holidays.” In becoming a master builder, Dore followed in the footsteps of both his grandfather and father. He was also a founding board
member of the Holmesglen institute of TAFE. In a statement, the Pakenham Racing Club said its current committee, staff, and members are deeply saddened by Dore’s passing. “His presence and contribution will long be remembered,” the statement read. “The club extends its deepest condolences to friends and family of George Dore.”

George Dore wore his lack of racing knowledge like a badge of honour, as anyone who knew him would attest. And that’s partly what made his influence on the Pakenham Racing Club so remarkable. A life member of the club, he passed away recently - leaving behind a legacy that will continue to be felt for decades to come. He served on the Pakenham Racing Club (PRC) committee from 1988 to 2015, and was a member for 45 years - having joined in 1975. And despite of his lack of knowledge when it came to the finer points of the sport, itself, Dore was one of the most important figures in one of the most crucial periods in the PRC’s history. He was made a life member in 2009, and in 2013 was bestowed further recognition by the broader racing industry when he was awarded Country Racing Victoria’s Special Achievement award. His involvement with the PRC began in 1964, when he put in the successful tender for the construction of the grandstand at the old Pakenham Racecourse. And he rounded out that contribution more than 50 years later when he oversaw the relocation of the club to its new Tynong base serving as the chairman of the PRC’s relocation sub-committee. In paying tribute to his great mate, former PRC chief executive Michael Hodge said Dore’s legacy won’t soon be forgotten. “What set him apart was that he was meticulous in his detail,” Hodge explained. “As a consequence, he was always so wellinformed and that was the basis for his excellent decision-making and outstanding judgement.” For Hodge, it’s what made Dore the perfect mentor. “On complex issues, he dealt with them with a particular ease,” he said. “And, of course, he was a wise head with decades upon decades of commercial, construction, and project management experience.” In arguably the most crucial period in PRC history, Dore was a guiding light. “He wore his lack of interest in, and knowledge of racing like a badge of honour,” Hodge explained. “I think that’s worth noting, as few knew the enormous time he put into the racecourse relocation, and racing knowledge was not really a key ingredient for him. “What was needed was something completely different, and a set of skills and an acumen that only he could bring to the table. “A knowledge of racing was really obsolete we had plenty who could take care of that side of things.” Hodge said that while Dore wasn’t naturally drawn to the racing side of things, his biggest thrill over his time with the PRC was its people. “He just loved interacting with people, and he was so great at it,” Hodge said.
