‘Mates’ not fine By Jessica Anstice A Pakenham man has been slapped with a hefty fine after breaching the Chief Health Officer’s coronavirus ‘stay at home’ directions. The man travelled to Dandenong overnight on Tuesday 11 August to “hang out with some mates”. Police sighted him wandering the streets of Dandenong before issuing him with an infringement notice. Most people are doing the right thing though, with local streets deserted. Over the past week, there have been a number of cases detected across Cardinia Shire. The Health Department this week revealed how many Covid-19 cases are in each postcode. Covid confusion By Mitchell Clarke A Pakenham woman is still without answers as to whether she has contracted coronavirus - a month after she was first tested. Steph, who asked for her real name not to be used, claims she has been given the run around by both the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) and Monash Health. On 13 July, Steph was informed that she had come into close contact with a positive case at a medical clinic in Pakenham. She got tested the following day but didn’t receive her result, and was told that her test had likely been misplaced, when she called to enquire a few days later. On 17 July, Steph presented for her second test, and was advised the following day that she had contracted the virus.
She informed her partner Alex, who also did not wish to use their real name, and the pair began self-isolating immediately. A DHHS officer told Steph she would receive daily text messages and an information package through email, however she didn’t receive either. On 3 August, Steph and Alex got retested and while Alex returned a negative result, Steph never heard back. Instead, the DHHS officer said: “I think someone has accidentally deleted your case file”. But two days later, on 5 August, Steph received a text message from Monash Health which advised her that she was negative. Another text came through on 10 August, also from Monash Health, which informed her
that she was, in fact, positive. Throughout the ordeal, Steph hasn’t developed any symptoms other than a mild cough. “I’m really starting to question if I ever was positive or if I ever needed to quarantine,” she explained. “We didn’t know what was going on, and we still don’t, so we’ve just stayed in quarantine. We’ve been stuck at home this whole time.” The pair are both essential workers and are itching to get back to work, but it’s understood they can’t return until two weeks after Steph’s second negative result. “This whole thing has obviously been really frustrating because we just want to get back to work,” Steph said. “It’s just really inconsistent messaging. I understand if we have to wait for the manda-
tory isolation period, but just give us some directions and tell us what we have to do,” Alex added. “It’s literally taking the p*ss.” The confusing case has attracted the attention of Premier Daniel Andrews, who was questioned on the incident in his Tuesday press conference. “When you’re dealing with this task, as challenging as it is, you can never deliver something that is completely perfect. There will always be some error. This is humans talking to humans, it’s a massive task,” he said. “I can understand that would be deeply frustrating for that person ... I’d like to know what’s gone on there as well.” DHHS and Monash Health have been contacted for comment.

Covid creativity to reflect these times By Jessica Anstice When the pandemic was declared, lockdown and stay at home orders formed a whole new way of life for residents coping with extra downtime and social isolation. As the local community lives through the second round of lockdown, Cardinia Shire resident Jillian Ronald has taken the opportunity to create mosaic artworks. At first, she started with a ‘Covid kettle’, then moved onto a corona inspired mirror and is now working on her ‘emoji virus’. Ms Ronald has also been working on preparation for Art Show Pakenham’s Isolation Exhibition. The Isolation Exhibition will include projects such as craft, artworks, jigsaws, lego, spoonville, photography and displays of events such as Anzac Day and birthdays. “This will be a great opportunity for people who have completed a project while we have been stuck at home,” she said. “It would be a historical snapshot of how the community handled this unprecedented time, providing inspiration and goals for people to attempt their own projects while establishing community connection. “It is open to everyone and the projects will be displayed on our Facebook page, then after lockdown in a window display at Pakenham Place and finally when cultural activities return exhibited in a gallery setting.” Art Show Pakenham is a community based, volunteer run, not for profit, incorporated group. It has been running the local art show for
Burnouts not so fine By Jessica Anstice A hoon driver was issued a number of fines after he was caught performing burnouts in Pakenham. Victoria Police’s public safety officers (PSOs) were patrolling John Street in Pakenham when they observed a Holden Commodore driving recklessly on Saturday 8 August. The PSOs quickly radioed a nearby highway patrol unit who swiftly attended before intercepting the Commodore and speaking to an 18-year-old man from Pakenham. The driver was interviewed for numerous offences and his vehicle was immediately impounded for a period of 30 days at a cost of $1390. All four tyres on the Commodore were also found to be unroadworthy. The driver was also issued with an infringement notice at $1652 for breaching the Chief Health Officer’s coronavirus directions. He will be required to attend court at a later date to explain his actions to a Magistrate.

Bungled break in on CCTV By Mitchell Clarke A brazen would-be burglar was caught on camera casing out an Officer estate before he purportedly targeted one family home and attempted to break in during the dead of night. Arcadia Estate resident Drayton, surname withheld, was fast asleep at 2am on Monday morning, 10 August, when an unwanted guest was lurking outside. When he checked his phone in the morning, a notification alerted Drayton to movement out the front of his property just hours before. “This surprised me as we are all under strict lockdown with the curfew, so I didn’t expect any sort of trigger,” he recalled. “Only when reviewing the footage did I notice the individual attempting to break in ... I then also noticed that they had made a few earlier visits to the lane to case out the area.” Drayton said it was a relief the bungled burglar couldn’t gain access to his house, and added that it was lucky there was no attempts to break into the family car. “It was very surreal to watch someone trying to get into your house, where a lot of us would feel is our own sanctuary,” he said.
“It’s a shame that this is still happening during the current pandemic. You would think that people would be more caring because of the current climate, but people are taking advantage of the curfew and reduced movement at night.” With a toddler in tow, Drayton said his first instinct was to take further precautions to ensure the house was completely secure. The matter was immediately reported to the Victoria Police assistance line. “Unfortunately, the person on the line advised that since it was an ‘attempt’ and the person did not actually break into the house, there was little they could do,” he explained. The incident follows a string of similar attempted break ins and thefts throughout the estate - including a family on Flanagan Avenue who reportedly had their car broken into on the same morning. “A few other people mentioned online that their cars had been broken into on the same night and also shared footage ... You could see that it was the same guy trying his luck in multiple places,” Drayton said. “Some people did not have any incidents, but caught the individual on the security cam-

“Arcadia is a large estate and is densely populated. It’s also a growing suburb, with some houses staying unoccupied while people slowly move in or try to rent out,” he said. “This makes some houses easy targets, which then makes the surrounding houses at risk as well.”
It’s fine to flee, as escaping violence is essential By Mitchell Clarke Domestic violence victims will not be fined for fleeing violent family members or hostile situations despite the 8pm lockdown curfew, Victoria Police has confirmed. Family Violence Command acting assistant Commissioner Andrea McAlpine said instead of issuing fines to victims for Covid breaches, police would protect and assist them in seeking support options. “Police will not issue infringements to family violence victims who leave their homes to escape harm or are at risk of family violence,” A/C McAlpine said. She said as part of Victoria Police’s Operation Ribbon, a team of specialist detectives from the Family Violence Investigation Unit would continue to check in on high risk victims. The operation also involves police knocking on the doors of known perpetrators to ensure they were not committing harm. “We are aware that there may be an increased presence and heightened dependence on the perpetrator, and limited contact with friends and family who might detect that family violence crime is occurring during this time,” A/C McAlpine explained. “Our message is that police will respond to any report of family violence during the coronavirus pandemic - whether from the victim directly, from a friend, family member or other concerned person on their behalf.” Almost 1500 family violence incidents

said Stage 4 lockdowns could pose an increased risk to women and children experiencing abuse. “Right now, staying at home is the safest thing we can do, but we know for some people, being at home is anything but safe,” Ms Williams said. “If you are experiencing family violence, leaving for your safety is perfectly legitimate ... You will not be fined.” A/C McAlpine said it was important that family violence victims weren’t waiting for restrictions to be eased to seek help. “We really want to emphasise that no matter how minor someone thinks a matter is, we encourage this to be reported to police, or a support organisation - do not wait until the restrictions have been lifted,” she said. “Earlier reporting of family violence incidents to police will provide us with a chance to intervene early to prevent potential escalation and increase perpetrator accountability. “While we know there are additional pressures during this period, there is never an excuse for abusing a loved one.” Family violence frontline services, including crisis accommodation, continue to operate to support women, children and families during the coronavirus emergency. Wild chase ends in crash By Brendan Rees Two teenagers have been arrested after being chased and tasered following a police pursuit that ended in car crash at a Berwick shopping centre on Thursday 6 August. The incident unfolded after the teens allegedly stole a black Holden wagon after breaking into a Malmsbury Road home in Cranbourne North about 10.10am. Victoria Police say the allege the victim, a 37-year-old woman and her two children were home at the time and one of the males threatened her with a knife. A short time later the vehicle was travelling on the Princes Freeway when it struck an unmarked police car, causing the police vehicle to hit a concrete barrier and injuring a female senior constable in the vehicle, requiring her to be hospitalised, a Victoria Police spokesperson said. A police helicopter followed the vehicle and stop sticks were deployed on Clyde Road after the vehicle exited the freeway and travelled south, a police spokesperson said. It’s alleged the vehicle came to a stop after crashing into a number of parked cars at Eden Rise Shopping Centre at the intersection of Clyde Road and O’Shea Road before the male occupants fled on foot. One of the males, an 18-year-old man from Doveton, was arrested nearby after a police dog bit him on the arm. He was taken to hospital under police guard with non-life threatening injuries and is expected to be interviewed following his release from hospital. The other boy, a 17-year-old boy from Clyde North was arrested about 200 metres away on Clyde Road after a “conducted energy device” was deployed, a police spokesperson said. In relation to the Cranbourne North aggravated burglary, he has been charged with

He has also been charged with more than nine offences in relation to further aggravated burglaries in Pakenham and Rowville including home invasion, assault with a weapon, threat to inflict serious injury, and breaching Chief Health Officer directions, police say. An Ambulance Victoria spokesperson said paramedics were called to the incident at Berwick at 11am and treated a male patient who was taken to The Alfred hospital with an upper body injury while a teenage boy was taken to Casey Hospital in a stable condition. Crime scene tape cordoned off part of the carpark as investigators tried to piece together the chain of events including members of the
Public Order Response Team and detectives. A picture of the Holden wagon showed extensive damage to the bonnet. Members from the Southern Metro Crime Team are investigating. A worker nearby, who asked not to be named, said he heard a loud bang before looking outside to discover police and bystanders everywhere. Shocked onlookers also took to social media saying there were about 15 police cars at the scene as well as a police helicopter hovering above. “The pursuit led them to here where the car has crashed into parked cars and then tried to escape. Sniffer dogs have caught the two guys,“ a witness wrote. Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Covid-19 by postcodes By Jessica Anstice There were 85 active cases of coronavirus across the Cardinia Shire as of Tuesday 11 August, according to the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS). The steady daily increase of cases over the past week has brought the total ever number of cases in the shire to 136. The Pakenham 3810 postcode is the largest of the Cardinia Shire Covid-19 hotspots, according to figures released by DHHS. The postcode, which includes Pakenham South, Pakenham Upper and Rythdale, has 46 active cases, as of Tuesday. The Officer and Officer South postcode 3809 has 27 active cases. Police have been patrolling the streets overnight to ensure residents are obeying the Stage 4 lockdown 8pm-5am curfew. Overnight on Wednesday 12 August, a Pakenham man who travelled to Dandenong to “hang out with some mates” was caught by officers wandering the streets. The man was issued with an infringement notice for breaching the Chief Health Officer’s stay at home directions. Over the last week, Covid-19 cases have emerged in schools and in supermarkets across the shire. A reported case was detected at Pakenham Primary School, prompting a precautionary closure. In a letter to the school community via Compass, principal Gail Butterworth said the case had been reported to the Department of Education and Training (DET) and was being investigated by the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS). On Thursday 6 August, a student from Beaconhills College in Berwick tested positive to coronavirus. In a statement sent to parents and guardians, the college said the year 10 student had not been on campus since Tuesday 28 July. The college’s Berwick campus and Little Beacons Early Learning Centre closed for students and staff from Thursday 6 August for 24 hours. A staff member who works at Coles’ Cardinia Lakes was self-isolating after testing positive for coronavirus.

We need and welcome the health response from the Victorian Government, but children and youth are also critically part of our pandemic response and need specific information about the changes. Parents need support to talk about the Covid-19 changes - many do not know what to say. Children have questions about Covid-19 that are not being addressed. These questions will differ from child to child. These conversations should happen at multiple levels - and be aided by campaigns where children’s questions and concerns can be acknowledged and addressed nationally. It is imperative for the Victorian Government to hold a child and youth specific press conference where this essential information can be disseminated to children and parents. A few countries, like New Zealand and Norway, did and it’s been successful, with some parents learning a bit more from the responses too. Prep students from Beaconhills College celebrated a milestone as they reached 100 days of learning. While learning from home due to the coronavirus lockdown, students were invited to dress up as 100-year-olds for the day on Monday 10 August. Beaconhills College prep coordinator and teacher, Ruth Holland, said 100 days of school was not just a wonderful landmark for preps to celebrate, but was designed to help build on students’ understanding of numbers to 100. Before lockdown, in class the preps would look at their maths board each day and add a new star or an ice cream stick. When there were 10 sticks, they would put an elastic band around them to make a bundle. “Each day we could count our stars and sticks, at first by ones and later on by tens, as we add on more bundles,” Ms Holland explained. “So we build on the students’ understanding of place value slowly until we get all the way up to 100.” She said to mark the 100 day celebration, students did lots of activities relating to 100, such as making a tower with 100 blocks and filling a container with 100 teaspoons of water. “The students wrote about what they would buy if they had $100, and looked at different ways that we can make $100 with notes and coins,” she said. “We also asked the students to dress up as centenarians.”

A residential shed in Clyde has been gutted by fire on Monday morning 10 August. Fire crews were called to a property at Ballarto Road shortly after 7am, to reports of smoke issuing from a shed. Firefighters in breathing apparatus tackled the blaze, which was brought under control within 12 minutes. A CFA spokesperson said it was believed the fire started in the wall cavity above a wood heater resulting in limited damage to the wall and roof. Clyde CFA spokesman Ian Earle said the shed was well alight by the time crews arrived in foggy conditions. Mr Earle said flames had ran up the wall after a pot-belly stove heater ignited nearby plaster boards. He said the metal shed was still standing but had been gutted inside. Luckily the fire did not spread to the home at the property where two adults and a child were present. Clyde CFA crews also made use of their new thermal imaging camera that can detect hot spots. Two fire trucks from Clyde and Cranbourne fire brigades responded to the blaze and remained on scene until 8am. Meanwhile, Bass MP Jordan Crugnale has urged households in Casey and Cardinia to protect themselves from carbon monoxide poisoning by getting their open flued gas heaters serviced by a licensed gasfitter. Carbon monoxide poisoning can cause long term chronic health issues. It can also kill. Tragically, in 2017, Greensborough grandmother Sonia Sofianopoulos died of carbon monoxide poisoning in her home. In 2010, two young brothers, Chase and Tyler Robinson were also killed by carbon monoxide in regional Victoria. “Since the tragic deaths of the Robinson boys, Energy Safe Victoria has run a state-wide awareness campaign, calling on Victorians to get their gas heaters serviced at least once every two years,” Ms Crugnale said. “Servicing must be carried out by a licensed gasfitter, one endorsed in Type A ap-

Gasfitters carry out an essential service and are permitted to carry out domestic work. They can attend at your home to service your gas heater.” Other simple steps that will reduce the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning include: Never leave your heater on overnight or for long period Make sure there is fresh air flowing through the room when your heater is on Never run exhaust fans such as the kitchen range hood or the bathroom fan at the same time as the heater Never bring outdoor heaters inside for use in your home.

Casey Council chair of administrators Noelene Duff said the facility was the beginning of some exciting new opportunities for sportspeople across Casey, and the city itself. “The facility improvements will enable Casey to attract elite level competition that brings financial benefits to Casey, and provides opportunities for the Casey community to have a first-hand experience of elite sport in their municipality,” Ms Duff said. “This facility will also create more exciting pathways for young women in the area.” The huge new project will also be accompanied by an impressive mural promoting female participation in sport, which is about to get underway. Stage two followed an impressive suite of works, which were complete during stage one. These works saw: a total refurbishment of the lower level of the existing pavilion four new physio and doctors’ rooms a large ice-bath to assist player rehabilitation and an ice machine large strapping area for trainers a large women’s changeroom, which includes 45 lockers and bathroom amenities a lounge area for players to get together with their families post-match and, a new tiered meeting room, with a large inbuilt whiteboard.

The works were delivered through Sport and Recreation Victoria, which funded $5 million of the project, while council contributed $2.5 million and the AFL, $500,000. The wider community will also have access to this facility through partnership opportunities with the Casey Demons, the Melbourne Football Club and educational institutions. These upgrades provide a female friendly pavilion at Casey Fields of an elite standard, and align with the broader 2018 Casey Fields Master Plan, which sets out to create a boutique stadium that fulfils the future needs of the Casey sporting community.

Digby’s lasting impact By sports editor Russell Bennett Digby Hogben thrived off the love he shared with his family and friends, and it’s that shared love they all miss so desperately in his passing. He was born David Charles Hogben on 23 July 1943, but was better known to most over the decades since as, simply, Digby. Attending Kooweerup Secondary College after his family settled in the area, Digby’s love affair with sport blossomed. He loved his footy and was a true dyed-inthe-wool Hawks man, but it was his involvement in local cricketing circles that he truly became synonymous with. He fast became a favourite son at Pakenham - going on to be a premiership-winning skipper and, later, a life member. In his early 20s, Digby went to work for Nestle as a fitter’s assistant and general hand. It was there that he met a fellow worker by the name of Doris Helen Potter, and he asked her if she’d go to a wedding with him. She said she would, but only if he didn’t drink any beer. Digby said he wouldn’t, and was true to his word. But by her own admission, Doris said it didn’t hurt that Digby was particularly goodlooking. And that’s where the nickname came in. In the 1960s, a handsome English movie star named Digby Wolfe came to Australia, and David was the spitting image of him. So from that point on, the nickname ‘Digby’ stuck like glue. Doris and Digby were married in 1965, and their courtship only began 12 months prior. In the coming years, Brett (or ‘Digger’, having been born on Anzac Day as the son of Digby) and Greg (‘Little Dig’) were born. And it was through them, and the greater Hogben family, that Digby found his true calling. Over the decades since, in Pakenham and - most recently - Bunyip, Digby supported his family and friends however he could, even while experiencing his own personal battles. Pakenham Cricket Club president Phil ‘Mitsu’ Anning first knew of Digby when he was living in Deveney Street, Pakenham. On the way home from work, he used to drive past Mitsu and his mates kicking the footy in the street and give them a beep and a wave. As a junior at the Pakenham Cricket Club at the time, Mitsu had seen Digby play in the A Grade side of a Saturday afternoon, and in the season of 1972/73 he got to know him that little bit more when he had his first taste of A Grade - as a 15-year-old. That kick-started what would become a brilliant friendship for so long. “I remember it well for two reasons in relation to Digby,” Mitsu explained as part of his eulogy at Digby’s funeral recently. “Firstly, he was so friendly and welcoming towards me and put me at ease.

Digby Hogben’s name will always be synonymous with the Pakenham Cricket Club. “As you could imagine, I was extremely nervous for my first game with players I had always looked up to, and secondly I remember the match well as I got to bat with the great man.” Digby batted at number 10, with Mitsu the last man in. Digby greeted him as he made his way out on to the ground, and Mitsu still remembers his words of wisdom clear as day. “We probably need another 30 runs to have a competitive score, so you just hang around with me and I will get those 30 extra runs,” Digby said. Mitsu thought it was a good plan. “I had to last two balls of the over so nervously I took centre, looked around and set myself up to survive, and that I did,” Mitsu explained. “Even though I didn’t lay bat on ball, the bowler just never had the brains to bowl at the stumps and I played and missed at both balls. “Digby, at the end of the over, greeted me with a ‘well done, now leave it up to me’. “The first ball of the next over Digby proceeded to hit over the fence for six - to clarify the six, we played at St Pat’s, which had a boundary of about 35 metres, but it didn’t matter. I was in awe of this man for what he’d just done. “But the next ball it all went pear-shaped as Digby had all three stumps sent flying through the air, so our 30-run partnership turned into a six-run partnership, lasting just three balls. “As we made our way off the ground, Digby said to me ‘if we get the chance to play together again, just remember do as I say, not as I do’. “Ever since that day I have constantly reminded him that he cost me a hundred, but that game, more importantly for me, was a start of a friendship that has lasted nearly 50 years and my respect and love for him as person started that day and will remain with me forever.” Though Mitsu and Digby did play a few more games together, it was in the twilight of Digby’s playing career that he became the instigator, and founder, of a Pakenham team called ‘Dads Army’ - a rag-tag group of mates
who just wanted to continue to play the game they love, but have plenty of fun and enjoyment in the lower grades at the same time. “It became what I have often said is a golden era for our club - both on and off the field,” Mitsu explained. “This group, in about a 10-year period, won four premierships, but it’s what they did for the club off-field that will be remembered just as importantly as the premierships.” Whether it was back to the top pub after a day’s play, or supporting the club at social functions, it was all mainly due to the influence of one man - Digby. “After each day’s play you would look forward to, over a drink or 20, stories that would eventuate from the Dads Army games, and most of the most humorous would involve Digby,” Mitsu said, adding his great mate had a ritual of wearing Hawthorn footy socks while playing, despite the rules specifically stating white socks had to be worn. Digby would use his trademark pipe - along with his car keys, wallet, and watch - as his bowling marker. He’d just drop them on the ground at the top of his mark, and away he went. But, one day, disaster struck as Digby lost his pipe in the long grass at the end of an over. It resulted in his team mates and opponents alike commencing an extensive search - because he wouldn’t allow the game to resume until it was found. Unfortunately for him, as he was coming in to bowl, he accidentally stood on it - pushing it further into the grass. On another occasion, one of Digby’s opponents ran approximately 13 runs (as his team mates counted) as he lost a ball while fielding - only for the whole team to end up searching for it and finding it six inches down a surface crack on the dry ground. Mitsu spoke with adoration about the impact his great mate Digby had on the Pakenham Cricket Club over an extended period - including after his playing days had come to an end.
“Once his playing career finished his interest in the club was still strong - he always checked the scores to see how the teams and individuals were going; he was a regular attendee at our life members day; he was a social member of the club; and at the start of each season he would ring me to see if we had any new clothing that he could purchase so he could show everyone how proud he was to be part of the club,” Mitsu said. “Whenever any sides - senior or junior achieved the ultimate success, he would be one of the first people on the phone to me asking me to pass on his best wishes to those sides and everyone involved. “Two years ago we had a reunion to celebrate the four Dads Army premierships and what a great day it was - all the players sharing stories of their glory. “The cricket was washed out that day, so our current day players were able to spend time with these greats of that era and one man (Digby) stole the show with his stories of those days.” Mitsu said it was always a pleasure to be in Digby’s company - at the cricket club, or away from it. “Whether it was on a Friday night or a Sunday afternoon, you were always welcome to come and have a beer with Digby - his shed was always open for you to pop in, and these sessions were to become that popular and well-attended that the place became known as the ‘Hilton on Henry’,” he explained. “When a social golf group was formed, it was known as the ‘Hilton on Henry Golf Club’ and, further to that, when a few of the group members formed a horse racing (punting) syndicate, you guessed it - it was named the Hilton on Henry Racing Syndicate. “Our first horse won its first race at pretty good odds - it paid on the tote $60-odd. “Digby backed it with the bookies and got 35/1, and after the race I said ‘are you a bit disappointed that you missed the bigger odds on the tote?’ “His reply was that it doesn’t matter how much you collect, there is no better feeling than having a bookmaker hand over the money to you - they hate, and I love it.” In the 55 years of Mitsu’s involvement at the Pakenham Cricket Club, he said he’d never known a more popular or respected club person than Digby. “Digby Hogben is the epitome of what our club is, and Digby is one of the reasons our club is what it is today,” he said. “The legacy he has left will never be forgotten and will continue for generations to come.” Digby is survived by his wife, Doris; his children, Brett and Greg; his daughter-in-law Kylie; his grandchildren Cassie, Shae, Lachlan, Tieanna, Jayden, Corey, Taylah, Chase, and Harvey; and his sisters Leanne and Margaret. Shooting star is soaring By Russell Bennett Despite the ongoing uncertainty surrounding the Covid-19 pandemic, and its associated challenges, Basketball Australia has announced the most recent group of athletes to receive scholarships to the Centre of Excellence at the world-renowned Australian Institute of Sport (AIS). Among them is Cranbourne West product Nyadiew Puoch, who plays at Dandenong. She was selected in the Victorian High Performance Program for 2019-20, and was also chosen earlier this year to represent the Vic Metro under-18 girls team. She’d previously been selected in the Vic Metro under-16 girls side, which claimed the gold medal at the 2019 Australian Junior Championships in Darwin. Puoch was announced as a new Centre of Excellence scholarship athlete for 2020, and will start once she’s given the approval to travel from Victoria. The Centre of Excellence brings together the best young basketballers from around Australia to live and train together in a highperformance training environment - with the assistance of elite coaches. Puoch is expected to join the program in Term 4, while South Australian Isobel Borlase is expected to join in late January when the program starts up in 2021. Basketball Australia Centre of Excellence women’s head coach Kristen Veal spoke about the opportunity awaiting Puoch and Borlase. “Despite these uncertain and challenging times for many, we are fortunate to be able to provide two very promising athletes the amazing opportunity of a Centre of Excellence scholarship at the world-renowned Australian Institute of Sport,” she said. “Through extensive talent identification

Program, which has enabled the WGCA to provide a series of opportunities to young players to enjoy their cricket throughout the Cardinia, Casey, and South Gippsland shires. The West Gippsland Cricket Association boys, meanwhile, had four representative teams in action this year - the under-12s, under-14s, under-16s, and under-18s competing in the Victorian Cricket Union’s January junior carnival. Finally, the WGCA is continuing in its strategic planning efforts alongside GippSport - the Gippsland Regional Sports Assembly. It’s their aim to develop a clear vision for the association, with the process potentially able to help resolve any underlying issues or unrealistic ideas for the future. It’s also thought the process can identify the clubs in need of external funding, and to maximise opportunities in that space. At the recent WGCA annual general meeting, Bob Taylor was elected president (for the fourth year in a row), and he is supported on the new committee by Rob Hansen (vice president), Shane Dalton (secretary), Aaron Straughair (treasurer), Shona Lynch (junior cricket manager), and Brent Wilson (fixtures coordinator). The WGCA is also looking for expressions of interest for the positions of MyCricket manager, and umpires advisor.

A process of renewal and reorganisation is on the cards for the West Gippsland Cricket Association as it looks to meet the challenges facing community cricket head-on. High on the agenda for the WGCA is creating a clear pathway for female participation, on the back of the success of the AllStar Girls competition. There’s a range of initiatives emerging throughout the district to ensure that female cricket can not only continue to expand, but also thrive. The Star News understands that community stakeholders have been approached to support these initiatives, which could potentially culminate in female participants having a pathway right up to the elite level of Victorian Premier Cricket at clubs including Casey-South Melbourne and Dandenong. It’s understood the WGCA is looking to introduce a similar set-up for girls cricket as the neighbouring DDCA competition two age groups (such as the under-13s and under-17s) playing in slightly different formats. It’s understood the whole process could take up to five years to become completely operational. And it could be all set to start with a significant focus on the Woolworths Junior Blasters. The WGCA has also put a sponsorship proposal together for its junior competitions. The All-Star Girls competition turned plenty of heads last season, with an impressive turnout at Starling Road in Officer for grand final day. The Carlisle Park girls side put together a sublime performance to defeat the previous season’s champion, Officer, and claim the 2019/20 Lang Lang Community Bank premiership cup. The Lang Lang Community Bank has supported the WGCA for a number of years now through its Community Grants
