One of the fastest growing sectors of the local economy is tourism. TOURISM Cardinia Shire offers wineries, potteries, restaurants, cafes, working farms, adventure playgrounds and iconic tourist attractions like Puffing Billy, Emerald Lake Park and now Gumbuya World. Cardinia Shire is an easy day trip for people living in the vast majority of Melbourne’s suburbs. The opening of Gumbuya World 2 years ago has produced a surge of tourists flocking down the Princes Highway. Tourists are also draws to the northern part of the municipality, affectionately called ’The Hills’ by locals, and includes the villages of Emerald, Gembrook, Cockatoo and Upper Beaconsfield. The southern coast area includes world acclaimed RAMSAR wetlands, the townships of Kooweerup and Lang Lang and further afield Pearcedale and Tooradin. This area is especially rich in asparagus growing, supplying most of Australia’s asparagus crop and there are several working farms that attract tourists from home and abroad. EDUCATION Cardinia Shire has a network of great education options that includes private schools such as St Clare’s Primary School at Officer, St Francis Xavier, Beaconhills, Chairo Christian School and Lakeside College. The shire’s government schools include Pakenham Hills PS, Cardinia PS, Pakenham PS, Pakenham Consolidated, Bridgewood PS and Pakenham Springs. There are also numerous Catholic Primary

Schools like St Patrick’s, St James and Columba Primary at Bunyip. There are state run high schools in Pakenham, Kooweerup, Officer and Emerald preparing young people for the future. Pakenham has seen an explosion of building activity in the past decade as former farmland has been transformed into planned communities such as Timbertop, Heritage Springs, Lakeside and Cardinia Lakes. The median price in Pakenham according to the Real Estate Institute of Victoria is now $511,000, compared to the metro Melbourne median of $860,000. Median rent is $360 per week. The shire’s building boom is set to continue in coming years when the huge Pakenham East development comes online. Local developer Parklea will play a huge role at Pakenham East with its Ridgelea Estate, a self-sustaining community with plenty of local facilities and open space. Pakenham East will eventually be home to 20,000-22,000 people and approximately 7,100 dwellings. Residents will also be provided with a town centre, convenience centre, two sporting reserves, two government primary schools, a non-government primary school, a government secondary school, parks and waterways. Planning for the 15-year project is well underway, with Parklea anticipating to start selling Ridgelea Estate land in 2021. HEALTH Residents are serviced by a network of health care providers led by general practitioners through to allied health professionals like radiologists, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, dietitians, psychologists, audiologists and podiatrists. Kooweerup is the only town within the shire that has a hospital. The Kooweerup Hospital first opened its doors as a bush nursing hospital on 11 April 1921. Staff provide round-theclock medical services on the large hospital site as well as district nursing in and around the community. Cardinia Shire has also been working with Victoria Police and the University of Melbourne on Together We Can, an initiative to prevent and end family violence in Cardinia Shire. SPORT Cardinia Shire has long been a hub of sporting activity in Melbourne’s south-east. Its football and netball clubs - including the likes of Beaconsfield, Officer, Pakenham, Nar Nar Goon, Kooweerup, Garfield and Bunyip have long fought out ferocious battles in their respective leagues, with some of the best playing talent around stemming from those clubs. AFL Outer East and the West Gippsland Football Netball Competition draw bumper crowds on a weekly basis as the Cardiniabased clubs compete with those throughout Casey and, in the case of West Gippsland, right down to tourist hotspots Inverloch and Phillip Island. Pakenham is one of AFL Outer East’s biggest clubs, and its proud history of premiership wins spans through the generations. On the cricket field - in the West Gippsland Cricket Association - Pakenham and Kooweerup enjoy the fiercest of rivalries. They’ve both won through to the past five straight WGCA Premier grade grand finals, with Kooweerup just ahead in that premiership ledger 3-2. Pakenham Racing Club's showpiece venue, Racing.com Park in Tynong, is not only the home of local racing, but has forged a reputation as one of the best factilities in the country. Some of Australia's leading trainers have already relocated their stables to the Tynong facility. On the basketball and netball courts of Pakenham’s Cardinia Life stadium, players of all ages and abilities put their all into the nightly competitions; while other indoor sports such as floorball also take pride of place within the shire. Cardinia also has a number of hugely-popular bowls and golf clubs that many throughout the region proudly call their sporting home. THE FUTURE The future looks bright for the growing shire as new road, school and level crossing removal

projects progress over the next 12 months. There will be some relief on the road fronts across the shire, as Cardinia Shire Council prepares to launch a mammoth 10-year-project to upgrade 111 kilometres of unsealed roads across Pakenham Upper, Beaconsfield, Cockatoo, Emerald and Gembrook. The $1.4 billion Monash Freeway upgrade is officially underway, as commuters eagerly wait to have their travel times slashed by up to nine minutes off a peak-hour trip from Pakenham to the city. The project will see the busy freeway expanded from four to six lanes between Clyde Road and Cardinia Road and from eight to ten lanes between Springvale Road and Eastlink by 2022. Meanwhile, in the growth areas of Pakenham and Officer, congestion busting projects are well underway, with the removal of the Cardinia Road level crossing fast-tracked to be completed by the end of 2021. Level crossings at McGregor Road and Racecourse Road will be replaced with a rail over road design, expected to be completed in 2025. Works on Healesville-Kooweerup Road in

Pakenham are also set to commence “mid to late year”. The arterial Kooweerup bypass will be widened two to four lanes for 10 kilometres between Princes Freeway and Manks Road. With the community’s congestion concerns addressed, the focus shifts to ensuring the needs of growing populations are met. Residents in Pakenham are a step closer to having a new local school open, with the yetto-be-named Henry Road Secondary College opening next year. And the future is also looking green, as Cardinia Shire Council has joined 15 local councils in the south east under a landmark collective tender to build a waste-to-energy facility at a yet-to-be-decided location. The initiative will see the amount of household rubbish sent to landfill reduced by at least 85 percent. On the entertainment front, a new stateof-the-art park, Deep Creek Reserve, opened in Pakenham in October last year. Deep Creek Reserve is a place of environmental and recreational significance within Cardinia Shire, and the location of one of the area’s best all-abilities play spaces. After six years of waiting, the Cockatoo BMX Pumps Track, at Alma Treloar Reserve, officially opened on Saturday 21 March. The BMX track is just one of the projects to be completed as part of the Alma Treloar masterplan. An upgraded off-leash dog area, which will feature an enclosed area with temporary agility equipment, will be built soon. A $200 million world class motorsports complex in Pakenham is set to be completed within the next two years. The 128 hectare McGregor Road site will include a 3.6km race track – capable of accommodating V8 Supercars – a drag straight, pit facilities, a 1.4km rallycross circuit, driver education and experience centre, 900 metre go-karting circuit, 50,000 square metres of spectator viewing and grandstand areas, a sport shooting range, and vehicle storage buildings. Meanwhile, the $20 million Puffing Billy Railway discovery centre is set to open to the public by Christmas next year. The all-weather facility aims to provide unique cultural interpretations of the relationship between the Dandenong Ranges and Puffing Billy. Thursday, 26 March, 2020

Parklea founder Andrew Facey has been a leader in the real estate industry for more than 50 years.

Andrew joined the family firm in 1968 embarking on a long and successful career. He rose from salesman to director and partner of the firm, taking the reins from his father, Angus, in the 1970s. In 1974 Andrew turned his attention to property development and Parklea was born. “I was excited by the idea that I could be a part of building communities - places where

people could live, work and play,“ Mr Facey said. “The idea drove me to property development and later became Parklea’s ethos.“ Parklea is now the biggest broad acre land owner in Cardinia Shire and has residential and commercial developments underway from Gippsland to the Great Ocean Road. Despite all this, Parklea’s biggest challenge is yet to come - helping transform 630 hectares on the eastern edge of Pakenham into a new community. Parklea is developing 3000 lots at Ridgelea as well as a shopping centre. The vision for Ridgelea is for a self sustaining community with plenty of local facilities and open space. Land sales are due to get underway at Ridgelea next year. Mr Facey said his enthusiasm for real estate and creating quality developments had not waned. “The population in Melbourne’s South East is booming with thousands of families making their home here. I’m proud that Parklea is an integral part of shaping new communities during this exciting period of growth.” Giving back to the communities is also part of the Parklea ethos. The company supports numerous local community groups including the Pakenham United Soccer Club, Pakenham Football Club, Casey Cannons Hockey Club, Ellinbank and District Football League (EDFL), Deep Creek Reserve, and the Pakenham Show.

Clough family motors on For almost five decades, the Clough family has been keeping Cardinia’s motorists moving. It all began in 1974, when Bruce Clough purchased a business in Nar Nar Goon that consisted of a mechanical workshop, tow truck business and other automotive services. The family later acquired the service station next door too, and the Clough Automotive Group was born. The original businesses still stand to this day and have entered local lore; Bruce Clough’s servo is a popular stopping point on the journey to the outer Cardinia region, with its cheap petrol and guaranteed friendly service. In December 2016, the second generation of the family unveiled the Pakenham Mazda showroom, located in the bustling SouthEast Business Park in Pakenham. It’s the latest move by the family to continue providing the highest standard in automotive services to residents. Kane Clough, part of the second generation of the family, says it’s important to the Cloughs to give back to the community that they’ve been part of for so long. “We wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for them,” he says. The family is Cardinia-born-and-bred and still has a farm in Nar Nar Goon, so they’re embedded in the community they serve. Kane acknowledges that the region has changed over the past 46 years, with the population of Cardinia increasing “enormously” but the family’s focus hasn’t changed. “We provide service that suits both the new population and the originals who have been here for longer than us,” Kane says. “It’s good that Cardinia still has that family feel and local community spirit.” Locals have embraced the new Pakenham

Adapting to the growth has been challenging but is paying off, Kane says, with the team expanding to cater to the area’s needs. Nature at their doorstep Cardinia Waters Retirement Village is home to not only 537 residents, but also a healthy population of birds, frogs and fish. The village’s magnificent wetlands are the pride and joy of the close-knit community. Residents who are keen on bird watching have recorded 52 different species at the wetlands, which cover an impressive 2 acres stretching from the Racecourse Road entrance to Deep Creek Reserve at the back. The area is teeming with life including the protected growling grass frog, pelicans, ducks, swamp hens and blue wrens. “We have swans nest and hatch their young and there are a lot of different species of ducks. When the ducks or the swamp hens walk around followed by their chicks the residents just love it,“ explained village manager Manny Vella. “We have 358 units here at Cardinia Waters but the wetlands provide a real sense of open space.“ The wetlands are maintained by an enthusiastic group of village volunteers who meet once a month to weed, mulch, plant, remove rubbish and generally maintain the delicate ecosystem. One of the most dedicated volunteers is Jim Harrison, who can be found working there almost every day, alongside Judy and Ralph Smith. “The work is never ending, but it’s great getting out in the fresh air,“ said Jim, who has lived at Cardinia Waters for 9 years. Fellow resident Margaret Rutherford calls the wetlands “therapeutic“. Margaret, a resident of 11 years, helps with the weeding and regularly bird watches with the aid of her binoculars and bird book.

Helping students shine On 7 February 1978, St Francis Xavier College opened its doors to the first intake of 72 students. Today the college has grown into a threecampus educational institution with a student enrolment of more than 3000 students, a combined staff of over 400 and an extensive building complex. Make a difference today By Edward O'Donohue MP Our world is changing very rapidly during unprecedented times as Covid-19 continues to spread throughout Australia and the world. While we all need to look after our health and ensure good hygiene to try and limit the spread of this disease it is important to keep in mind other practical ways we can help our local community. Local businesses need our help, with many facing closures or reduced services for the foreseeable future. One thing we can all do is support local businesses that are still able to operate, including local food and retail outlets that offer online shopping. These businesses will need our

support more than ever. The Eastern Victoria Region has already suffered following the summer bushfires with many businesses and services severely impacted. Together we can make a difference to our local business community by shopping locally where possible and supporting one another through this uncertain time. Happy home When it came time for Ray and Maxine Johnstone to move into a retirement village, the most important thing for them was to know that they would be close to their loving family. They were also keen to feel comfortable in their new life - having lived in only one house in Keysborough for their entire married lives, the trepidation at the move was real. Go direct to the source Around Victoria, more and more people are moving towards buying their fresh produce direct from the source, scouring farmers’ markets and farm gates for fruit, eggs and spreads direct from the source. That’s made easy here in Officer, with Bellevue Orchard on our doorsteps. Bellevue Orchard is the home of Summer Snow juice, a staple in fridges in the region. The farm now has an on-site farm shop, offering their boutique sparkling and plain apple juice made fresh on the farm. “Everyone has been impacted by this crisis and we can only try to reduce that impact as much as possible - our own business has had a significant detrimental impact. “Please shop locally, help an impacted business and keep as many people employed as we can.” Mr Macdonald is the owner of online platform ‘A Guide to Cardinia’ and Ms Day is the CEO of Meraki Business Solutions in Pakenham. “The gift cards idea came out of everything else I do with A Guide to Cardinia - it’s all about supporting and bringing together the community, and small business is a vital part of our community, in so many ways,” Mr Macdonald said. “I was looking for a way to help businesses support each other, support their customers and have customers support them. “The gift cards do all of that, and more.”

A big believer in small businesses, Mr Macdonald says there needs to be more support for them. The aim of the initiative is for small local businesses to gain combined marketing power, increase brand awareness and gain another stream of revenue they might not have had previously. “It brings people together. The current situation with the coronavirus has only highlighted the need,” he added. “The response so far has been extremely positive.” Once the project officially launches, the community can become involved through social media, and by heading into the participating businesses where they’ll be able to purchase the gift cards for any amount between $10 and $1000. “Gift cards are a great way to increase customer loyalty and strengthen community en-

gagement,” he said. Cafe’s major changes

By Jessica Anstice The hospitality industry can be notoriously precarious at the best of times but with the coronavirus global pandemic spreading across the state, the situation for small cafes has become dire. Like most small businesses across Cardinia region, Khan’s Hospitality Services is evidently feeling the financial strain. Khan’s Hospitality Services caters Vista Cafe at the Cardinia Cultural Centre, as well as Lardner Park, weddings, school balls, corporate events, and more. Within the space of three days last week the business was diminished to the point where 100 percent of its functions and events were cancelled, not to mention the slow down of customer base in the cafe. Owner and director, Adam Sadiqzai, was forced to lay off 15 staff members last week. “The saddest thing to deal with is standing down our team of staff who we love - many of our staff has been employed for over 10 years,” he said. “We have seen their kids grow up into fine young adults and many of these kids have also worked with us over the years while they have studied.

Vista Cafe will be expanding its services to accommodate the demands of the public by not only providing a safe environment to grab a take away coffee or bite to eat, but it has also created a menu of pre-made meals. The pre-made meals will provide all the ingredients for popular family dishes which customers can prepare themselves at home. For example, the chicken parma dinner pack - which includes four chicken schnitzels, ham, Napoli sauce, shredded cheese, mixed vegetables and washed potatoes.

“As a business we have a policy of where ever possible we purchase locally which inevitably means we are purchasing from smaller family businesses,” Mr Sadiqzai explained. “As a result of our business being hit so hard the downstream impact is also felt with these small businesses no longer benefiting from our business. “Local businesses support the local economy so before people think of jumping in their car and going through drive through, think twice and support a little business.” As the cafe itself is located inside the cultural centre which has vast space, social distancing is entirely possible for customers and staff alike. It is ideally located next to the Lakeside lake which provides a great opportunity for customers to grab a coffee or takeaway lunch and enjoy a relaxing walk or a picnic on the grass.

“Going for a walk around the lake with a coffee in hand is good for mental and physical health, supports local business and people can enjoy the company of their loved ones,” he added. Mr Sadiqzai said he is also worried about fellow business in Lakeside and asks that the community keeps them in mind when shopping. “Remember them when you are getting house hold items, so when you are getting chicken get it from the poultry chop, if you need vegetables or fruit get it from the local fruiterer, if you want family pies get it from the local pie shop and so on,” he said. “Although the supermarket has all these items, they will pull through with the sales of toilet paper alone. Just give a moment thought for the small independently owned business in Lakeside.”

‘Be kind to each other’ By Mitchell Clarke Cardinia Shire Council is urging the community to stay informed and heed government warnings during these unprecedented times. “We encourage our community to follow government directions and to be kind to each other during this time,” Cardinia Shire Council CEO Carol Jeffs said. “Due to the rapidly evolving nature of this pandemic, council will continue to reassess the situation and take into consideration any further developments and advice from health authorities. “We are working incredibly hard to be able to continue to deliver essential services, modify delivery where we need to, and protect the health of our community and staff.” Essential services such as maternal and child health, immunisations and waste services will continue to be delivered, however some modifications have been made. “Council is committed to working and delivering as many services as we can,” Ms Jeffs said. “These are services that are really important to our wellbeing ... most of our services are continuing but in a modified service.” Maternal and child health centres have closed, with a fully booked, over-the-phone consultation service to continue from 8.30am to 5pm - the number for parents to call is 5943 4250. My Place youth centre will remain open until Friday 27 March from 2-5pm by appointment only with strictly no drop-ins. Teenage school holiday programs have been cancelled but the council’s youth services team will continue to be available by phone on 1800 496 884 during business hours. Meanwhile, a number of council facilities will close or amend services to meet government guidelines and to reduce the risk to community and staff.

At least 10 cases of Covid-19 within the Casey region have emerged, according to the state's health department. The data from the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) also revealed three cases of the disease in Cardinia. The Department only provided information on local government areas - not information regarding each suburb. In Casey, the data showed those who had tested positive to Covid-19 were eight females and two males. This includes one man is aged in his 80s and a female in her teens.The Department's figures have reported a total of 284 cases in Victoria, despite the state's total infection rate surpassing reaching 411 on Tuesday 24 March, indicating some cases may have been under-reported.The state's new cases include 36 men and 27 women (and one being further investigated), with people aged from pre-school age to late eighties. At the present time, there are six confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Victoria that may have been acquired through community trans-

Bakery ‘takeaway’ open By Mitchell Clarke One of Pakenham Main Street’s most recognised and popular eateries is calling on the local community for support, as they face their most difficult period in business. The Great Australian Bakehouse, a traditional family run bakery which has been operating for more than 15 years, is still open to the public for takeaway. Owner Lyn Mclatchie said the “unprecedented crisis” has been made even more difficult due to its constantly evolving nature. “As a team we have tried to do our best to carry on and serve our customers to the best of our ability, and to abide by all government recommendations,” Ms Mclatchie said. “Our business follows all the government guidelines with regards to managing through this crisis. Up to this point, this means that we are only selling food for ‘takeaway’. “We’re also adhering to social distancing rules, including ensuring everyone has four square metres of space.” Now more than ever, the business is reliant on the community’s help to remain afloat. They’re urging people to continue to purchase their products - and while they won’t be able to enjoy them in-store, they’ll be able to eat them in the comfort of their home. “Everything that we do is about making our customers happy,” she said. “Our customers are buying different types of products and we’re responding to their requests. For example, our customers can buy our delicious pies directly from the fridge to take away and eat at home.” Cardinia Shire Council’s economic development manager Andrew Pomeroy said many local businesses will continue to struggle under the current climate. “Some local hospitality businesses are now offering a hot takeaway or delivery meal ser-

vice. This may be just the injection of hope the business owner needs in a very trying time, and if you like it, tell your friends,” Mr Pomeroy said. The Great Australian Bakehouse hope that message will be heeded, so they can continue to rise before dawn to begin baking each morning. “It’s really important to have the support of our local community at this challenging time,” Ms Mclatchie added. “We are part of the local community - we employ members of the local community, we support local sporting teams and we buy from local suppliers. “We are not a big, multi-national company, and many businesses will simply not be able to survive without the support of the local community. Bell rings on short Term 1 By Mitchell Clarke The final school bell on Monday afternoon signalled an early end to term one for state schools across the Cardinia shire. Premier Daniel Andrews announced his decision to bring the school holidays forward, starting on Tuesday 24 March, as part of the Stage 1 shutdown of all non-essentially activity across the country. “The Stage 1 shutdown will have a significant impact on the lives and livelihoods of many Victorians, but if we don’t do this, more Victorians will contract coronavirus and more Victorians will die,” the Premier said. “I have recently told Victorians that the government will ask them to do things they have never experienced before - these are the types of measures that I was talking about.” State schools will use the time to support teachers and staff plan for flexible and remote learning in the event schools need to move to that method of teaching. Education Minister James Merlino said schools will put remote learning methods in place once the school holidays finish, if required. “Schools will support both children of essential services workers and vulnerable children in this additional holiday period of 24 to 27 March,” Mr Merlino said. “At this stage, schools will reopen in Term 2, with any change to this plan to be based on the advice of Victoria’s Chief Health Officer.” A number of independent schools including Beaconhills College and Chairo Christian College had already opted to move their classes online, prior to the government’s call. Beaconhills headmaster Tony Sheumack said the government’s decision to declare a state of emergency and the growing number of confirmed Covid-19 cases were “significant

Children of essential services workers and vulnerable and at risk students can continue on campus until Friday 27 March. “We have taken this action in line with advice from the Victorian Government to help minimise the spread of COVID-19 within our school communities,” a Diocese of Sale spokesperson said. “The safety and wellbeing of our students, staff and their families remains our highest priority. The situation is rapidly evolving, and we will continue to adjust our approach as needed. We are preparing for the possibility of remote schooling. “Our thoughts and prayers are with those who may be unwell, and those who are working to keep our community safe.”

Struggling tour company’s generous gift of transport By Mitchell Clarke A Pakenham tour company will utilise their buses and transport the elderly and vulnerable to and from supermarkets during exclusive trading hours. Tourism operator Tour Local's buses are currently sitting empty as the company struggles through the Covid-19 pandemic - so the company decided to use their assets for good. Operations manager Raymond Staindl said the initiative to help the community's most vulnerable came about over the span of 24 hours. "We deal with a lot of seniors on our tours and we know firsthand that as capable as some are, there are still some hurdles that may make it harder for some to do something as simple as getting to Coles for 7am," Mr Staindl explained. "We come to your house, pick you up, play some good tunes along the way, take you to Coles, wait for you to do your shopping and then bring you home." The company will run three services to

"We were so proud with how much of our community were so quick to get behind this idea," he said. Like many small businesses, Tour Local has been dramatically affected by the unprecedented Covid-19 conditions, but they're also still reeling from the bushfire crisis. "Being part of the tourism industry, we have been feeling the effects since the start of the year, with the bushfires and the ways in which they've devastated some of our most travelled to locations," Mr Staindl said. "We are a small, family based company and Tuesday was, for us, D-day. From 9am till 5pm, we cancelled over 90 percent of our bookings

A positive amid the panic By Mitchell Clarke As pandemic panic fills the community, Pakenham Sikh Temple volunteers are fuelling positivity and instilling hope by cooking and delivering free food to the elderly and vulnerable. About 10 to 15 volunteers will provide a free vegetarian feed, consisting of rice, vegetables, chickpeas and lentils, for those in need. The inspiring initiative follows weeks of panic buying which has seen supermarket shelves stripped as people face the prospect of lockdowns. "We want to send a message in the community that we're showing a positive side during a negative time," volunteer Charan (Monty) Sodhi said. For the elderly and vulnerable, dedicated volunteers will deliver the meals to their doorsteps between 6pm to 8pm on the same day, provided their request is put in before midday. "These are the most vulnerable people in the community and it's hard for them to travel with limited access, so we've decided to offer this for them," he added. The program will run until at least the end of March, however the group is committed to continuing for as long as necessary. "We're just testing the waters but we have enough supplies to last for a while," Mr Sodhi said.

Clair’s love of a good book By Melissa Grant You could say storytelling runs in the family for children’s author Clair Hume. As the daughter of renowned author and illustrator Alison Lester, Clair was forever listening to stories and telling her own from a young age. Clair has just released her first children’s picture book, The Bad Bassinis. Her path to becoming a published author is featured in the autumn edition of Casey Cardinia Kids Today. Clair talks about growing up in Nar Nar Goon and following in the footsteps of her mother, who has authored more than 25 children’s books including The Quicksand Pony and Magic Beach. “I guess she leaves quite massive shoes to fill, so the bar feels unattainably high!” Clair says. “But at the same time, my brothers and I grew up around stories - telling them, listening to them and giving mum feedback on them as soon as we could talk - so maybe a natural direction was always going to be in storytelling and writing and shaping stories.” Clair’s younger brother Lachie has written and illustrated two picture books and older brother Will is also a writer. The trio had a fun childhood, filling their days mucking around outside with a multitude of family pets on the family property at Nar Nar Goon. DDCA’s best of the best It’s been another strong season for some of the star cricketers of the Dandenong District’s toptier, and DDCA reporter Nick Creely has chosen his Turf 1 Team of the Year, based on the home-and-away season. It was an extremely unfortunate end to the Turf 1 season, with the standalone grand final scheduled on Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 March cancelled amid the Covid-19 pandemic, with Berwick picking up its first premiership since 2011/12 due to finishing on top of the ladder at the conclusion of the regular rounds. Buckley Ridges - which was shooting for back-to-back flags - finished as runner-up after qualifying for the decider after finishing in fourth position. Here is the team (in batting order): Matthew Chasemore (Berwick, captain) - 617 runs at 61.7, highest score: 134* Now a Berwick premiership captain, the exVictorian Premier Cricket great enjoyed one of his most prolific scoring seasons in a number of years, mostly opening the batting for the Bears. The left-hander made a superb 134 not out against Buckley Ridges and also struck scores of 55 not out, 70 not out, 91 and 98 to be one of the most consistent top-order players in the association once again. He also led the Bears superbly throughout the season, which ultimately ended up in the Turf 1 flag after finishing on top of the table. Ateeq Javid (Springvale South) - 565 runs at 51.4, HS: 110, four wickets at 31.5 The overseas pro joined the Bloods as their skipper and had an immediate impact with scores of 110, 87, 75 not out and 63 all before Christmas to completely take the competition by storm. Morteza Ali (Narre South) - 438 runs at 33.7, HS: 125, 24 wkts at 15.1, BB: 5/11 The Narre South all-rounder was a deserving winner of the Alan Wookey Medal as champion player of the Turf 1 season, with the exciting Lion proving his worth in the top-flight with some dominant performances that ultimately helped lead the club to an incredible finals appearance after being promoted from Turf 2. Ali belted a memorable 125 against North Dandenong early in the season, while just prior to Christmas, he put Hallam Kalora Park to the sword with 64 and 5/58, while he also snagged 5/11 in a match-winning performance against St Mary’s. David White (Buckley Ridges) - 695 runs at 53.5, HS: 101 It was always going to be a hard act to follow after one of the most dominant individual seasons in 2018/19 in his first season in the association, but the South African star was once again the most prolific Turf 1 batsman of the year, topping the competition in runs and providing his usual fireworks with some of the more entertaining and breathtaking knocks you’ll see. While White wasn’t at his absolute best towards the back-end of the season, the overseas pro led the club brilliantly through a rough patch before the grand final was cancelled, preventing the Bucks from a chance of back-to-back flags. Kaushalya Weeraratne (HSD) - 558 runs at 46.5, HS: 89, three wkts at 28 It was a fascinating season for the Heinz Southern Districts star, who was right up in the association in runs but couldn’t quite break through for the massive score despite showcasing immense consistency in the middle or-

der. Incredibly, Weeraratne made between 30 and 49 eight times throughout the season, and scored two half-centuries after Christmas, and only made one single digit score in the entire campaign. Jerome Jones (Buckley Ridges) - 429 runs at 53.6, HS: 97, 26 wkts at 18.8, BB: 5/45 What a recruit he’s been for Buckley Ridges. The West Indian all-rounder enjoyed an absolutely superb maiden season for the club, becoming a destructive middle-order batsman and outstanding spearhead with the ball, sending them down quickly at Park Oval. Jones often provided some huge individual performances, including a golden 97 against Berwick, and a highly-impressive 5/45 against North Dandenong. Ruwantha Kellepotha (Berwick) - 180 runs at 20, HS: 58*, 26 wkts at 17, BB: 4/8 The star all-rounder joined the Bears with a bit of expectation behind him after an extraordinary 2018/19 season with St Mary’s. While it took a bit of time for the leggie and middleorder batsman to settle in to his new surrounds, as the year wore on his value was evident with a number of excellent displays - particularly with the ball. Kellepotha had a tough start to the year with the bat but made some handy contributions, batting at four later in the season. Troy Aust (Buckley Ridges, wk) - 179 runs at 22.3, HS: 47, 17 catches, six stumpings The Buckley keeper and long-term leader enjoyed another incredibly consistent season and once again proved his skill with the gloves throughout the year and also his capacity to provide handy runs later in the innings for his club. He’s an unbelievably reliable cricketer who seemingly is still playing at an extremely high standard.

James Wilcock (Berwick) - 46 runs at 23, HS: 13*, 31 wkts at 11.7, BB: 5/14 The Turf 1 leading wicket-taker interestingly had a slow start to the season with just four wickets from his first four games, but since then his class went to another level, completely dominating the competition and proving himself to be the premier quick of the DDCA. His patch leading into finals - including 3/3 from eight overs against Hallam and 4/8 against St Mary’s - was frightening. Brendan Rose (Berwick) - 21 runs at 3.5, HS: 7, 24 wkts at 12.8, BB: 5/29 Rose came as a highly-prized recruit to the club from Premier outfit Casey-South Melbourne, and enjoyed a strong first season at the club in 2018/19, but this year, the quick’s class was on display in a scary new-ball combination with Wilcock - providing so much consistency with his lines, something he’s well renowned for. He snared 5/29 in Round 2 to set the scene for his season and seemed to always lift to another level against the top-sides, as shown by his 4/19 against Buckley Ridges in a run-soaked one-day clash. Jarryd Straker (Springvale South) - 20 runs at 5, HS: 7, 29 wkts at 12.1, BB: 4/22 Once again staking a claim as the top spinner of the association, the left-arm tweaker was once again absolutely superb for the Bloods with his consistency, control and ability to wear down an opposition on display. He rarely went an innings without a wicket, and took three or more wickets six times throughout the 2019/20 campaign, including four against Berwick, Buckley Ridges and a quality 3/10 against Narre South. Searching for the solution By sports editor Russell Bennett The postponement, or even cancellation of competitions across Australia has thrown the community sporting world into chaos, with players, clubs and leagues wondering where to turn next in the uncertain times surrounding the Covid-19 pandemic. Of course, there are much bigger things at play here than sport - the community's health and safety, first and foremost - but the future is an incredibly uncertain one for business and sporting clubs alike. Terry Dillon from TD Solutions (TDS) Sports Administration has developed a coronavirus club response package, which aims to educate and direct administrators on ways of minimising damage to clubs and their future prospects, and emerging from the crisis ready to re-engage with their core business. Dillon is working in conjunction with the AFL to provide direction, and the next steps to take for the 3500-plus community clubs around the country to best manage what AFL chief executive Gillon McLachlan admitted is a once in a 100-year challenge. A guide instructing clubs as to how to best move forward will be released this week.
