Dearest damage By Jed Lanyon The growing invasion of wild deer continues to plague Yarra Valley wineries, costing businesses hundreds of thousands of dollars in damages and preventative measures, but a strategy to deal with the issue could still be months away. Eildon MP Cindy McLeish told Star Mail she has been frustrated at the lack of response and action taken by the state government in releasing a deer management strategy, which is now a year overdue. Ms McLeish said that the Minister for Agriculture reported to her stating the final deer management strategy would not be released until later this year. “I have complaints constantly from locals who are fed up with their crops, vineyards and gardens being destroyed,” she said. “Even worse are reports of illegal hunting. Residents can hear gun shots close by, spot light torches being shone into their homes and often find headless carcasses left by the road.” Wine Yarra Valley president and local winemaker Franco D’Anna said re-classifying the destructive animal as a pest, would be a great start to tackling the issue. “They really need to change the legislation ... They’re not native and the desecration to the bushland is unbelievable. “Unless they are declared as a pest it’s going to be hard to keep their numbers under control.” Mr D’Anna fears deer numbers will spiral as estimates state that the current Victorian deer population of one million could explode to 2.5 million in just five years. “20 years ago you wouldn’t see one deer, now it’s like every night you’ll see them,” he said. “The deer can do up to $100,000 in damages in just one night. Once they eat the crop it’s gone. And there’s not a lot of ways to stop them

To address the issue, Mr D’Anna opted to erect 1.9 metre high cyclone fencing around the 270 hectare vineyard at Hoddles Creek Estate as a preventative measure. He said the costs to secure the property with fencing exceeded $200,000. “It’s a massive cost tho the industry and it’s only going to get worse.”

Australian Deer Association executive officer, Barry Howlett expressed his concerns to Ms McLeish. “Increasing deer numbers in Victoria are impacting agriculture and biodiversity in the region,” he said. “We need a well-considered plan that takes into consideration the views of everyone in the community.” “We have been waiting over 12 months for a practical framework that identifies actions based on the greatest needs.” A Victorian government spokesperson said they are developing a Deer Management Strategy that will provide a clear and coordinated
approach to deer management in Victoria. It is being developed between the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning and Department of Jobs, Precincts and Regions in response to several factors, including the rapid increase in wild deer numbers across the state. "Swift action has been taken to control deer following the bushfires earlier this year, which has been aimed at reducing their impact and spread following the fires," the spokesperson said. "Release of the final Victorian Deer Management Strategy will be later this year.”

‘Accident’ road upgrades slammed By Jed Lanyon Seville East residents have slammed the State Government’s response to fixing the Warburton Highway, which has seen another accident nine days after a Labor MP claimed the road was “much safer.” A two-car collision took place on the highway on Saturday 14 March with paramedics assessing two women at the scene, thankfully neither requiring hospitalisation. But accidents like this have become commonplace on the Warburton Highway. For over a year, Seville East residents Joel Supple, Claire Knowles and Evelyn MP Bridget Vallence have been leading the campaign to have a dangerous stretch of highway between Douthie Road and Peters Road fixed. They want to see safety measures implemented such as designated turning lanes to prevent rear-end collisions in both directions as well as pedestrian islands to assist children crossing the road to reach the bus stop. It’s not a huge ask considering a Woori Yallock man was killed at the location last April, while two other incidents resulted in serious injuries in 2019 alone. But instead, the State Government installed reflective road tilings and guideposts, which they said would reduce the risk of run off road crashes and head on collisions, while ignoring the practical solutions to prevent Seville East residents from being sitting ducks as they attempt to reach their homes.
“It’s a slap in the face. We’re highly insulted that our lives are not valued enough to put more infrastructure into this stretch of road,” Mr Supple said. According to the Department of Transport, in the five year period between January 2014 and May 2019, there were nine recorded crashes on the Warburton Highway between Peters and Douthie roads. However, those figures don’t paint an accurate picture of the carnage caused by the car crashes in Seville East. Many accidents, like the most recent one on 14 March, often go unreported as official incidents by police when drivers and passengers walk away uninjured, despite their vehicles being written-off. “This is an absolute joke that the Labor government think that this is a satisfactory solution to make the people who live in Seville East feel safer when they are on the roads,” Ms Vallence said. “We should not have to wait for another tragedy before the government thinks it’s acceptable to act. “We have many serious crashes in this area. You only have to talk to the local emergency services ... They tell me it’s a regular place where they attend crashes.” Collisions occur so frequently that Mr Supple has become acquainted with local fire brigades who continue to attend to the scenes of accidents in Seville East. “It’s becoming so common now that the
local firies now know me and they give me a wave and say hello when I see them. It’s pretty sad that they know me just from this campaign,” he said. For Bridget, Claire and Joel, they want the Minister for Roads Jaala Pulford to come out and see just how dangerous the road is for herself. They want state government officials to see how they feel having to turn into and out of the Warburton Highway, a risky roll of the dice some residents are forced to take several times a day. They want the Department of Transport to listen to the voices of locals like Helen Lewis, who has been rear-ended three times on this same stretch of road. “Locals have to modify their driving behaviour to accommodate the dangers on this road,” Ms Knowles said. “They are pushed into having to drive so defensively because there is the risk that they are going to lose their life. “This is so far away from the (Transport Accident Commission’s) Towards Zero campaign that it’s pathetic.” Mr Supple vowed that their fight for safer roads will continue until the Warburton Highway receives the safety upgrades it requires. “We know it’s going to be a long battle, but we’re not backing away from it.”
Victoria Police wants to make it very clear that the exposure risk to coronavirus from a preliminary breath test (PBT) machine is no different to going about your daily life in the community. Expert medical advice has been sought and Victoria Police has been reassured that it is safe for people to participate in a PBT. It is against the law for drivers to refuse a PBT on the basis that they suspect coronavirus could be contracted. New straws and gloves are used every time a PBT is conducted. The machine is also disinfected between use. If the driver is not confident this has taken place, they can ask the police officer to complete the steps in front of them again. If a person refuses to undergo a PBT, normal penalties apply. This includes your licence being cancelled for two years and maximum fine of nearly $2000.
Supermarket behaviour Victoria Police is encouraging people to act in a respectful and law-abiding manner - including in public spaces, such as supermarkets throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. While instances of people exhibiting unruly behaviour in supermarkets and shopping centres have occurred, the vast majority of people do the right thing and there have been plenty of examples where goodwill and generosity have been shown to those less able or disadvantaged. We (Victoria Police) know a visible police presence assists the community in both feeling and being safe and minimises anti-social behaviour. We urge Victorians to act in a respectful manner in spaces such as supermarkets to ensure police resources can be used keeping the community safe and on other enforcement activities.
Coronavirus enforcement Victoria Police has established a coronavirus enforcement squad of 500 officers to ensure containment measures that have been put in place to combat coronavirus are followed. The officers will be out in the community doing spot checks on returning travellers who are in 14-day isolation, as well as enforcing the bans on indoor and outdoor gatherings. This includes the decision of the National Cabinet to implement Stage 1 of a shutdown from 12pm Monday 23 March, which is aimed at slowing the spread of coronavirus.

Virus fears hit Anzac Day By Jed Lanyon Numerous RSL sub-branches will cancel Anzac Day Services due to concerns surrounding the Covid-19 pandemic. The decision comes after RSL Victoria held an emergency meeting of the Anzac Day Commemorative Committee on 16 March to discuss whether commemorative services would go ahead. Several RSL sub-branches across the Yarra Ranges such as Warburton, Mount Evelyn, Emerald, Monbulk and more will be holding commemoration services that will go ahead without the participation of the public. Warburton RSL president Wayne Morgan said the decision was ’sad’ and that their Anzac Day commemorations will take place with RSL committee members only. Former Emerald RSL president Peter Maloney said, “We have to recognise the fact that we’re in a serious situation particularly with our veterans who are not getting any younger. “They are more prone because of their age so we have to recognise that and respect that.” Upwey-Belgrave RSL president David Eaton said the decision was “heartbreaking” but he understood why it was made. He said the financial impact on the RSL will be significant. “It’s going to be a massive hit for us. Anzac Day financially is our biggest day of the year,” he said. “That’s going to be devastating but we just hope the local people will support us and if they are in the position to make a donation to welfare that they do that.” Mount Evelyn RSL member Anthony McAleer also held concerns regarding the loss

RSL Victoria said there will be a single dawn service at the Melbourne Shrine of Remembrance, which the public will also not be able to attend. The event will be conducted with a small number of officials and guests, while being modified to minimise any risks. The Anzac Day March through Melbourne’s CBD and midday service at the Shrine of Remembrance have been cancelled. RSL Victoria State president Dr Robert Webster OAM said, “Anzac Day 2020 will not look like the Anzac Day that so many of us are used to participating in. “Traditionally many of us have marked Anzac Day by attending a dawn service at our local cenotaph or the Melbourne Shrine of Remembrance. “But in 2020, on April 25, when you can’t go to a local dawn service, the RSL is asking that instead you tune in via radio, social media or television and take a moment to reflect on the service and sacrifice of our veterans and those who are still serving today,” Dr Webster said. “The most important thing is that together we remember our pledge as a nation. A 500-strong police ‘coronavirus’ taskforce and a shut-down of “non-essential“ services has been announced in a bid to “save lives“ during the Covid-19 pandemic. The “non-essential” businesses will be shut down from midday on Monday 23 March, and government school holidays have been brought forward to Tuesday 24 March. As of early on 23 March, Victoria had recorded 355 coronavirus cases - up by 59 in the previous 24-hours. Premier Daniel Andrews announced that coronavirus police squad officers will increase spot checks on returned travellers in 14-day isolation as well as on limits to indoor and outdoor gatherings. Mr Andrews said police would not hesitate to enforce fines of up to $20,000 for breaches. It was confirmed that police had found a number of travellers breaching isolation rules, as well as intervening in misbehaviour at supermarkets. The crackdown was necessary because “unacceptable” mass gatherings at nightclubs,

Coronavirus closures By Jed Lanyon and Romy Stephens The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has seen a number of community and council organisations to close temporarily following Prime Minister Scott Morrison’s announcement that gatherings of more than 100 people indoors should cease immediately from Wednesday 18 March. The new measures are in addition to the banning of mass outdoor gatherings of more than 500 people and the 14-day isolation of travellers coming to Australia that are already in place to slow the spread of COVID-19. Yarra Ranges Council announced the temporary closure of public libraries, cultural and recreation centres from 19 March to 14 April in an attempt to help slow the spread of COVID-19 within its workforce and the community. All Yarra Ranges Council libraries operated in partnership with Eastern Regional Libraries will be closed. This includes Belgrave Library, Healesville Library, Lilydale Library, Montrose Library, Mooroolbark Library, Yarra Junction Library. Aquatic and recreation centres will be closed, including Lilydale Outdoor Waterplay, Seville Waterplay Park, Monbulk Aquatic Centre, Kilsyth Pool, Jack Hort Pool and Yarra Recreation Centre. Cultural venues such as The Memo Healesville, Art Centre Warburton, Montrose Town Centre, Mooroolbark Community Centre, Burrinja Cultural Centre and Yarra Ranges Regional Museum will also shut down temporarily. Council said there is a possibility that these

closures could be extended beyond the initial period stated. “These are important services and Yarra Ranges Council understands the additional social and cultural role these facilities play in our community,” A Yarra Ranges Council statement said. “We will look to find alternative and creative ways to engage and connect people over these coming weeks.” Parks Victoria decided to close high visitation sites with a typical attendance of over 500 people outdoors, and 100 people indoors.
These included the 1000 Steps, Lyrebird Track, Dandenong Ranges Botanical Garden and William Ricketts Sanctuary. Puffing Billy announced a temporary closure of its services from 23 March after careful consideration of advice from the State and Federal Government. “With the effects of the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak being felt more each day, our primary concern is for the safety and wellbeing of visitors, volunteers, employees and the community at large,” the organisation said in a statement.
“In these uncertain times, we must all help ease the spread of this virus and look out for those most vulnerable. “We will work with Victorian Government and public health officials to assess when it is safe to reopen the Railway and will communicate this via our website and social media channels.” The TarraWarra Museum of Art has shut their doors to visitors from Thursday 19 March. “In light of the rapidly evolving COVID-19 situation and with the safety of our staff and visitors in mind, TarraWarra Museum of Art will temporarily close to the public.” Healesville’s YAVA Gallery and Arts Hub followed suit closing for the foreseeable future, but said they hope to introduce an online model to support those in isolation. A YAVA spokesperson said, “Our current show Outsiders, with works from Kerryl Shirley and NW Wenhuda, will be represented online so that people can see it without the need to visit in person ... We are working on creating a series of online content to keep you connected to our arts community and fill the void while in isolation.” Some local fire brigades have modified their activities in response to the coronavirus pandemic. Seville Fire Brigade and WesburnMillgrove Fire Brigade announced the cancellation of training and meeting sessions as well as community events and appearances. CFA Media did not respond for comment. The Giant Dogs Picnic Fun Day set to take place at Lillydale Lake on 19 April was also one of the latest community events to be canceled.
Online learning preparations for schools shutdown By Taylah Eastwell Primary and secondary schools across the Yarra Ranges have spent the last few weeks preparing to transition to online-learning alternatives, which they will now implement following the Victorian Government's decision to close all schools from Tuesday 24 March. Premier Daniel Andrews informed National Cabinet on Sunday night that Victoria will implement a shutdown of all non-essential activity over the next 48 hours to combat the spread of coronavirus. Victorian school holidays have been brought forward to allow for the closure from Tuesday, with the decision to re-open after the Term One holidays to be determined following advice from the Chief Health Officer. Principal at Woori Yallock Primary School Oliver Thockloth said that Woori Yallock Primary has respected the wishes of students and their families who have chosen to isolate over the past few weeks, saying approximately "one seventh" of the school chose to remain home amid coronavirus fears. "We're making sure there are online resources that parents can access for kids that are staying home and if they don't have internet we're providing packs so that kids can still

Mr Rennick said that current departmental advice is that Student Assessed Coursework (SAC's) for senior students have been pushed back for an indeterminate period. "We are clearly mindful and doing everything we can to maintain the continuity of learning for students in Years 11 and 12," he said. The Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA) are the body responsible for VET and VCE curriculum and assessment. The Department of Education and Training last week launched a website titled Learning from Home in preparation for school closures, listing ways that teachers can allow students to continue learning via online resources. The decision to close schools also follows an announcement on Friday 20 March that NAPLAN testing will not take place in 2020 due to concerns the impacts of coronavirus may have on the delivery of testing, assessment and implications for nationally comparable data if a large number of students are unable to do the test. Minister for Education and Member for Monbulk James Merlino said that the Victorian Government was preparing for every possible scenario during this outbreak. "Many schools already have a range of tools available to help them teach remotely, and many schools are experienced in supporting student learning online," he said said.

Billion dollar bug invasion By Jed Lanyon Grapevine eating bug, phylloxera, continues to wreak havoc on the Yarra Valley’s wine industry as Agriculture Victoria confirmed new detections in February, leading to the infestation zone to be increased across the entire Yarra Ranges wine region. Phylloxera was first detected in the Yarra Valley in December 2006. The region’s Maroondah Phylloxera Infested Zone (PIZ) boundary has been redrawn seven times since then as new detections have been reported. There are fears for the long term impacts the soft-bodied, vine-killing pest will have on the wine industry in the Yarra Valley. Speaking at a council meeting, Yarra Ranges Councillor Jim Child said, “Expansion of the infestation zone includes the whole of the Yarra Valley now, not just one or two properties. It’s all of the Yarra Valley.” While Wine Yarra Valley president Franco D’Anna warned that the insect could halve the output of the Yarra Valley wine industry in a decade’s time. “Phylloxera is going to cost the Yarra Valley

over a billion dollars,” he said. “It’s a really serious issue and it’s the perfect storm at the moment ... The incentive to pull plants and replant vines is high and it’s causing production supply issues.“ Mr D’Anna said that only 14-15 per cent of rootstock in the Yarra Valley is resistant to phylloxera meaning that the overwhelming majority of vines will have to be replanted in the next 10 to 15 years. The Hoddles Creek Estate winemaker said that a winery can purchase own-rooted vines at $1 per vine. But the cost to purchase phyl-
loxera resistant stock would be about $5.50 with a minimum two year wait to receive the vines. Mr Child commended Yarra Valley wineries in taking action on the issue and described the replanting process as “a tough gig.” “They are taking a very unselfish attitude to this terrible situation that they are in,” Mr Child said. “They’ve introduced a lot of procedures and are advising other wineries how they can contain a breakout.”
The most recent detections within the PIZ resulted in an extension to the eastern edge of the current Maroondah PIZ boundary, referred to as the ‘Badger Creek extension’. All of the detections were as a result of industry self-reporting. The detections within the PIZ have been confirmed as the G1 strain, the same as that of other vineyards inside the Maroondah PIZ. Phylloxera can be picked up and spread by grapes and grape-related material, machinery and equipment, diagnostic samples and vineyard soil. Agriculture Victoria advises that the movement of the aforementioned ‘phylloxera risk vectors’ between phylloxera management zones within or between states must comply with state movement conditions. Footwear and clothing can also pick up and spread phylloxera, but the movement of people is not regulated. It is the landowner’s responsibility to be aware of, and implement best-practice farm-gate hygiene for phylloxera which will hold vineyards in good stead for prevention of all pests, diseases and weed incursions.
Speed limits tighten at highway works in wine region By Jed Lanyon Ongoing road works between Coldstream and Healesville on the Maroondah Highway will see the speed limit dropped to 80 kilometres per hour in a bid to increase safety on the road. Yarra Valley motorists are feeling the squeeze as the highway is narrowed to accommodate roadside equipment, requiring a temporary 40 kilometre per hour speed limit put in place in a two kilometre stretch. Minister for Roads, Road Safety and the
TAC Jaala Pulford said the works would upgrade four busy intersections with new turning lanes, install flexible safety barriers at high-
risk locations, while describing the highway as a “high-risk stretch of road.” “We’re boosting safety at sites like this to reduce the risk of fatal or serious injury crashes at intersections right across Victoria,” she said. The state government said the safety upgrade works are expected to be complete by mid-2020, with works are taking place from Monday to Friday, 7am to 6pm including some night works. New turning lanes will be built at the intersections of Tarrawarra Road, Domaine Chan-
don, Maddens Lane and Maxwells Road to help drivers safely cross the busy highway. A consistent speed limit of 80km/h between Coldstream and Healesville will be introduced and left-hand side flexible safety barrier will be installed in high-risk locations to reduce the risk of run-off-road crashes. According to the Department of Transport, between July 2013 and December 2018, three people lost their lives and 13 people were seriously injured in collisions on this stretch of road.

Mr Vass said that the gates are in poor condition and after 90 years of wear and tear, the timing is right to restore them to their former glory. “The uprights need some work in the footings to stabilise them. The actual metal gates are in okay condition but due to various works that have gone on around them, they no longer open and close easily, they scrape along the ground.“ The gates will be removed, sandblasted and sprayed in their original heritage green colours, as well as the archway and pillars which will be re-rendered. The project to restore the jubilee gates is supported by the Wandin Seville Community Bank Branch. The school’s 150th anniversary celebrations will take place on Saturday 24 October, which will include the official re-opening of the jubilee gates. Wandin Yallock Primary School’s famous jubilee gates are set to receive a makeover ahead of the school’s 150th anniversary celebrations. Works have begun to temporarily remove the historic gates and its fittings where they will be restored before making their way back to where they have stood since 1929. Principal Trevor Vass wants to reassure Wandin Yallock’s friends and families not to be alarmed when the gates disappear in the near future. “People continually come back to look at the gates,” he said. “I’ve met with lots of past students, who are well into their senior years now and that is one of their great memories. “It’s great to have that connection to the past with the school. We’ve been here for 150 years, hopefully we can be here for another 150 years and those gates can stand there as a reminder of the quality education that we have provided for many, many generations.” Grade 4 student Emanuel said he was looking forward to seeing the new gates and hopes they will be “a lot cooler”. “It represents how long the school has been here for and the things it has done for the community,” he said. The jubilee gates were installed in 1929 ahead of the school’s 60th anniversary in 1930. The Healesville and Yarra Glen Guardian newspaper covered the grand opening of the gates and the diamond jubilee celebrations, which took place on Thanksgiving on 25 October 1929. “The school is ideally situated on the crest of a hill at Wandin Yallock, where an entrancing view of the surroundings hills and valleys is always in evidence,” the newspaper article read. “Sixty years ago the pioneers of the district selected this rise for a school site, and surely

March 2020 UPDATE– Yarra Valley This season there has been less Queensland Fruit Fly (QFF) pressure in the Yarra Valley than the previous season. Great work from the residents and travelers in the region in keeping QFF out! Fantastic response by the community to cleaning up previous detections!
QFF HAS BEEN FOUND IN SILVAN March 2020 Clean up ALL fruit and inspect.
Recently, we have been supporting the Greensborough community to fight QFF. We have over 200 QFF traps in the Yarra Valley to help our region detect any QFF activity. Unfortunately, we have found a male QFF in Silvan. Extra traps have been deployed and a baiting program has been promoted. Everyone needs to harvest and clean up ripe fruit. Some residents may need to use insect mesh to prevent QFF laying eggs in fruit. Emergency trap kits and fast identification technology are available if QFF is suspected. The Yarra Valley can remain a fruit fly free region if we detect QFF early and if we respond appropriately. Please inspect your fruit, and report any suspect larvae to the Regional Coordinator (qff@agribusiness-yarravalley.com). Installing QFF traps in your garden and checking them often can alert you to any QFF, and it can help the area wide QFF monitoring. Infested produce needs to be treated by boiling or freezing solid before disposal.

Local footy and ‘the bug’ By Nick Creely, Russell Bennett and Taylah Eastwell Following the latest developments in the Covid-19 pandemic, it appears there will be no community football played until June. The AFL announced that "all AFL and AFL State association managed or operated leagues, along with the NAB AFL Auskick Centres programs currently operating or set to begin, will be postponed until 31st May 2020. "The AFL is also strongly recommending that independently governed junior and senior leagues and associations postpone the commencement and/or operation of their leagues/associations until the same date. "This decision and recommendation covers AFL community matches, AFL community training sessions and face to face AFL, WAFC and SANFL education courses." AFL Outer East informed its clubs, players, and members that its season would be postponed until 31 May. All AFL Outer East events have been suspended, effective immediately - likewise all club events, such as practice matches, training sessions, events or functions. "Rest assured, we are committed to holding football and netball competitions in season 2020. Given the unique nature of the situation, we will investigate all possibilities in providing this to our clubs and community," the AFL outer East statement reads. "The current environment is an ever-evolving one and we ask that all AFL Outer East participants, members and stakeholders stay calm and know that their health and safety is at the forefront of every decision." AFL Outer East region general manager Aaron Bailey told the Star News that right now the focus is on the health and wellbeing of the community, and that when the time comes to get back to business, they're committed to ensuring a season can get underway. "The priority is the safety and wellbeing of the community, and I think football is secondary to that at this time," he said. "We're really pleased it's a state-wide approach, it gives everyone the chance to breathe a bit and spend time with family and focus on their own wellbeing in the short-term, and then it'll give us some time to put some steps in place moving forward. "We'll hopefully get football and netball back up and running in that June period." With the Outer East competitions getting underway a little bit later than most community football and netball leagues across Victoria - therefore the season not scheduled to finish until AFL Grand Final Eve - Bailey said there was a range of options to explore in order to get plenty of football and netball action in 2020. "It's early days in regards to what happens after 31 May, but we're really open to exploring every avenue in regards to getting football and netball up and running," he said.
The AFL Outer East season has been delayed. "It's so important for our community that we get a season in, whatever shape or form, so everything's on the table. "After we give everyone a break and focus on just getting through this, we'll engage with our stakeholders, which is our clubs, and see what that looks like. "Our belief is with the nature of where our grand finals sit, we have an opportunity to get all the season or most of the season out, but it's an unprecedented time. "It's ever changing by the minute, and while I'm hopeful we'll back on the 31st of May, I'm

The Eastern Football Netball League (EFNL) have also made the decision to postpone all community junior and senior football and netball competitions until Saturday 2 May. In a statement released by the EFNL last week, the EFNL stated that the decision was made to manage Covid-19 in a united, consistent and staged approach following a meet-
ing with six senior metropolitan community leagues. All leagues agreed to suspend practice matches and training immediately. "The decision has been reached with consideration to consistency, league and club sustainability and the health and welfare of our players, officials, volunteers, spectators and umpires," the statement reads. The EFNL will re-convene on Tuesday 14 April to review or confirm this commencement date, subject to the status of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Season cancelled but premiers crowned ... by the book By Taylah Eastwell The Yarra Valley Cricket Association (YVCA) has had to turn to the rulebook to announce the 2019/20 Season Premiers, following the cancellation of all planned cricket matches including finals due to coronavirus. The premiers were announced as follows: DJSS - Yarra Junction RAFT Blue - Yarra Junction RAFT Gold - Warburton/Millgrove D Grade - Hoddles Creek 16 and Under - Warburton/Millgrove Under 14s - Healesville Under 12 Friday Nights - Yarra Glen Under 12 Saturday - Yarra Glen In a statement released by YVCA on Friday 20 March, it was stated that the club was hopeful for an indication that finals could be played at a later time but with restrictions on everyday life increasing this wasn’t viable. turn to Rule 24D which states that where a finals match cannot be completed the process is that the match shall be decided by the number of runs scored in each first innings, irrespective of the number of wickets lost. In congratulating the premiers, YVCA President David Peel said the 2019/20 was a season like no other. “The YVCA has experienced everything our funny game can provide, some on the lucky side, some on the unlucky side,” he said. “We are facing a unique unprecedented situation and understand this decision will cause some ill feelings, however we should be thankful at this time the YVCA has a rule applicable to situations where a finals match cannot be completed. The decision comes after the association had no choice but to cancel all scheduled cricket as a coronavirus precaution. In a statement, the Mr Peel said the YVCA “understand this will undoubtedly cause frustration for some within our cricketing community and we need to be mindful of the greater impact the potential catching or spreading of COVID-19 would cause”. The decision comes after Cricket Austra-
lia strongly recommended that all amateur cricket played within the community should cease, including both community cricket and premier cricket. In a statement released by Cricket Australia, it was said that this recommendation was based on expert advice from Cricket Australia’s Chief Medical Officer John Orchard and recent government information. “We want to ensure that cricket is doing everything it can to contribute to the global effort to slow, and eventually stop, the spread of coronavirus,” the statement reads. Cricket Victoria also announced that it “expects local community cricket and school competitions to take the same leadership position and cancel all cricket playing and training activity for the remainder of the 2019/20 season in response to this unprecedented global health issue. S. Lee Tet 18/ 18 and G. Walsh 24/ 9. However, Warburton’s Midweek Team suffered a disappointing loss to Lilydale 1 on Thursday in the Grand Final at Monbulk. The lightning fast green and windy conditions unsettled many Warburton players and they were comprehensively out bowled on the day, 76 to 40. Rink scores were as follows: S. Lord 13/ 26; G. Walsh 12/ 22 and S. Lee- Tet 15/ 28. The Warburton Bowls Club congratulate Lilydale on their fine victory and are also extremely proud of their own Midweek team for a wonderful season. Covid-19 might have affected a lot of sporting events, but golf at Warburton continues unbated. The Warburton Golf Club enjoyed their Stableford competition on Wednesday 18 March. Mick Eldridge put together a great round to finish with 40 impressive points. The daily up was Mark Gunther on a comeback with 39 points. Balls got down to 35. The nearest the pins went to Adam Patrick (3rd), Peter Bell (9th), Old Man River Hubbard (10th), Stu Patrick (12th) and Danny Fox (15th). All points were vital in the twilight competition after last round was scrapped to finish off the event a week early.
Late points were like gold to the regulars who play most weeks. 23 golden points were very valuable to Andy Gill, helping solidify his position in the Top 10. Andy Sweet snared the runner prize and also made the Top 10. Balls only got to 18. Nearest the pin winners were Adam Patrick (3rd), Hatty (6th) & Andy Sweet (9th). Adam Patrick also had an eagle on the eighth, a feature he is doing on a regular basis now. The final top 10 consists of, in finishing order, Jaqui Hall, Andy Sweet, Clint Toohey, Seth Spencely, Sam Dennis, Shane Campbell, Simon Spencely, Steuart Hawke, Luke Patrick, Andy Gill and R.J Hendy. Andrew Williams walked away with the A-Grade voucher with 38 impressive points, helped along by a stunning eagle at the 14th. “Willo“ is our current club champion, and plays off a handicap of 1, so his 38 points equates to an impressive 67 off-the-stick. B-Grade went to David Clinch with 37, which when added to his great 41 last week, easily gives him the Maurie Wakeling title for 2020. Good shooting, Bozo. The daily runner up was Captain Cross with 37 points. If you amassed 35+ points you earned a new ball. Greg Urquhart (13) managed the win playing Stableford with a score of 38. The father-son competition continues with the father, Chris Handaysde (4) defeating Tom Handasyde (28) on countback, both with a score of 36 for second and third place. Chris Handasyde also managed to hit two of the nearest the pins while the other two were hit by Allan Lithchfield and Laurie Tormey. The Skins hole was won by Greg Hay and the Secret Holes was won by Chris Handasyde who scored 10 points over the four holes.
