Dumping ground However the shop owners fear the issue is now getting worse and could be attracting rats. "We were petrified of mice and rats," Ms Mclatchie said. "The problem has probably been happening quite a bit all along but lately it has just escalated. People just have no responsibility," Ms Mclatchie said. "I saw a news article that said collection of household rubbish is going up so I imagine we haven't seen the last of my dumpers." Mr Kibarer believes the issue has been ongoing since about November last year but when Ms Mclatchie asked the council to resolve the issue she was allegedly told "there is nothing we can do about it".
Since the Gazette contacted Cardinia Shire Council for comment on Wednesday, the rubbish has been entirely cleaned up. "The council have cleaned up the whole area - it looks amazing," Ms Mclatchie said. Cardinia Shire Council's infrastructure services manager, Emma Cadd, said dealing with illegally dumped rubbish is costly for the council. "It negatively impacts our environment, and is unsightly for our community," she said."Illegally dumped rubbish is also an offence under the Environmental Protection Act 1970 (the Act) and offenders can be charged under the Act and if found guilty of an offence, may face a penalty of up to $6342."

Business owners are sick of "disgusting" piles of rubbish being dumped behind their shops in Pakenham's Main Street. Cardboard boxes, food scraps and cans are just a few of the items left behind the Main Street shops, including Cheap as Chips, The Great Australian Bakehouse and Kebabs Pakenham. "It's an ongoing problem and I don't know if it's tip rates that people don't want to pay or just people's laziness, but the problem around our car parks and recycling area is getting worse," bakery owner Lynette Mclatchie said. "It's frustrating and really disgusting: nappies, food scraps etc. The smell and the mess
- it looks horrible. I just don't know why people think it's ok to dump their rubbish on others. "The business owners around here have had their locked bins forced open and when they can't get into the bin they dump the rubbish on the ground - it's so lazy." Kebab shop owner and store manager, Alex Kibarer, said the garbage monstrosity could be mistaken for a tip. "I walked past it this morning and it just looks like a tip - it's ridiculous," he said. "It doesn't look very good and it is especially not a good look for Main Street because Main Street is usually very clean. "It's like someone's had a heap of rubbish in their car and decided to throw it out."

90 children from the Pakenham Little Athletics put on their fastest running shoes for a shot at taking out the Pakenham Gift championships on Saturday 22 February. The run, which is loosely based on the Stawell Gift, is an annual handicapped event run by the Pakenham Little Athletics at Toomuc Reserve. President Justin Piccolo said the event, now in its third year, had been an extremely popular event amongst participants of all ages. “The day went really well - the kids love it, their parents love it and we love holding it,“ he said. Hamish Pitts won the junior boys title and Mollie McNamara took out the junior girls, while Tye Beadel claimed the senior boys title and Madison Taman captured the senior girls championship. The free event was open to the public but only members of the Pakenham Little Athletics were eligible to physically compete - however it’s hoped that could change as early as next year. “So far this has been a thriving success and now we’re beginning to look at opening the event externally and offering other centres around the area to get involved,” Mr Piccolo added. Organisers said the day was made possible because of the generosity from sponsors and expressed thanks to the Nimmo family, Barry family, McAuley family, Helloworld Travel Bunyip, Bravehearts, Steppin out for Stevie and Cora Lynn Junior Football Club.

Extra bin about to begin By Mitchell Clarke Somewhere over the rainbow of colourful bins, recycling nirvana lies. A bold new proposal to reduce landfill waste by 80 percent in ten years will see the introduction of four colour-coded bins to homes, and Cardinia Shire Council is bracing for the positive change. Premier Daniel Andrews and Environment Minister Lily D'Ambrosio announced the $129 million initiative on Monday 24 February which aims to "better sort" waste, recyclables and organics. The project will equip households with a purple bin for glass recycling; a green bin for food and garden organics; a yellow bin for plastic, metal and paper recycling and a red bin for general household waste. By collecting glass separately, the product can be effectively recycled - with jars and bottles transformed into multiple different products, including new roads and footpaths. In a statement to the Gazette, Cardinia Shire Council confirmed they were "aware" of the Victorian Government's announcement to implement the four-bin system. "We're committed to using best practice principles and working with industry and different levels of government to deliver workable solutions to the challenges facing the recycling industry, and we know our residents are great recyclers," a council spokesperson said. But as to exactly what the new proposal will mean for ratepayers, it's still too early to tell. Initial concerns from residents include the potential of a rate increase, general confusion and not having the space for four bins on a property.

Picture: SUPPLIED "While the full details of the recent proposal are still to come from the State Government, changes that would bring improvements to the waste services available to our community and reduce the effects of waste on our environment would be welcomed," the spokesperson added. Also welcoming of the initiative is Pakenham Community Garden coordinator Max Godber, who said it's a positive step in addressing the "waste crisis". "I believe it's about bloody time and I think what will be crucial to this new program's success is the education of the general public," Mr Godber said.
"Communities need to step up their proactiveness and be part of the solution - whether it's apathy or dependence on government to fix the problem, this really takes a whole community approach to overcome this waste crisis." Mr Godber said the habit of putting everything into one bin had made people lazy and acknowledged it'd take some time to notice results. "I'm not expecting people to adapt to this change overnight, it will take this generation and the next generation to adapt and then get behind it," he said. "Obviously the reduction (of waste) should
be a priority rather than just relying on the recycling of the waste we produce." The Premier said the transformation will put Victoria as a national leader in recycling. "Most importantly, it will deliver a system that Victorians can actually rely on. This represents a holistic approach to reducing, reusing and recycling our state's waste," Mr Andrews said. The new bin rollout will gradually begin next year, as the State Government works to design and deliver the scheme alongside councils and industry to ensure it's fully developed by 2023.

Every March, students across the Cardinia shire are encouraged to walk, ride or scoot to and from school to help build healthy, active habits for life. Mobile March started last week and now in its tenth year, the council's campaign aims to increase physical activity in children through awareness, education, competition and prizes. Cardinia Shire mayor Jeff Springfield encouraged students to step up to the Mobile March challenge and experience the value of physical activity and quality time spent with peers and family. "Only one in five kids aged five to 17 years get the recommended one hour of physical activity every day, which is why it's so important that we have as many primary schools participating in Mobile March as possible," he said. "In 2019, 17 local schools participated in Mobile March, with more than 6500 students involved, and we're hoping to beat this record again in 2020. "It's great to see students engage in active, healthy and social ways to get to and from school - and I look forward to seeing all the

On right track for fun run By Jessica Anstice An ambitious mission to support community projects was well-supported with the 2020 Cardinia Shire Community Fun Run on 1 March. Sunday morning’s event saw more than 130 people run either five or 10 kilometres around Pakenham Racecourse in Nar Nar Goon. Over $3000 was raised for the Casey Cardinia Foundation, which provides financial support for community projects across the two municipalities. Hosted by Aligned Leisure, Cardinia Shire Council and the Casey Cardinia Foundation, the event aimed to promote physical activity, while supporting families to have fun outdoors. Cardinia Shire Community Fun Run committee member Paige Kristalyn said the event provided a “fun vibe” on the day. “The event was well received by the community,” she said. “There was a face painter, along with the Cardinia leisure street team car with a heap of fun activities to keep the children entertained. “Our group fitness captain warmed everyone up prior to their start time.” Event participant Danielle Kutchel, who walked five kilometres, hailed the event a success. “It was just a peaceful way to start the morning - the atmosphere was really nice,” Ms Kutchel said. “The track was nice and smooth so it wasn’t too hard on your joints, which was good. “My friend said the marshals were really encouraging and at the end we received a little goodie bag so I just thought it was nice that we got something afterwards.” The event sponsors included: Shanikas Pakenham, Chelle’s Soulfoods, NC Fitness and Life Fitness.

Bestchance at graduation By Mitchell Clarke A non-profit organisation, which expanded its operation to Pakenham in 2018, has proudly watched on as 25 students from across the Cardinia region recently graduated into their dream field. Since 2018, Bestchance Training, an Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA) registered training organisation has trained 114 students in the fields of early childhood education and care, and education support. The organisation's purpose is to help children, families and individuals thrive within the community, with the belief that accredited training leads to higher employment rates, economic growth and social participation. Cardinia Shire Council mayor Jeff Springfield attended the graduation ceremony to commend students on their achievements. "Good luck in your new careers where you will go on to make a big difference in the lives of children in our community," Cr Springfield said. With further growth predicted within the

"One of the things that makes Bestchance Training different is that we work collaboratively with employers to better prepare our students for the workforce," Bestchance Training general manager David Greenwood said. "Our students complete their study with the knowledge, skills and confidence to achieve success and gain employment." According to Bestchance's 2018 annual report, 78 percent of surveyed graduates found employment within the early year's industry, a rate which is 9 percent higher than the Victorian average. Of those surveyed in Cardinia, 46 percent stated they found employment either during or shortly after they became qualified. "I am so glad I chose to study with Bestchance. My trainer was excellent and I even got a job offered after my first placement," diploma student Anuradha Kodithuwakku said.

After the course, 98 per cent of parents said they felt more confident to act effectively in an emergency. Almost 50 per cent reported that they had used their acquired infant and child first aid knowledge within six months of undertaking the course. Narre Warren's Shelby Cooke, who performed CPR on her choking two-year-old daughter while paramedics rushed to their home, stressed the importance of first aid training. She believes that had she not received the course through her workplace, her daughter may have suffocated. "I still owe everything to having those skills," she said. "The more people that are equipped with them, the less tragedies we're going to see with children, babies and toddlers. "It's such a frightening thing to go through - so you need to be prepared." The free sessions will be held across the region, including at Beaconhills College, in Pakenham. Topics covered will include choking, fevers, convulsions, burns, drowning, bleeding, caring for an unconscious person, bites and stings and head injuries. A lifesaving Pakenham-based venture, spearheaded by a paramedic and a teacher, has received a federal cash injection to provide free first aid training throughout Melbourne's south-east. Tiny Hearts - founded by sisters Rachael Waia and Nikki Jurcutz - will arm 1800 local parents and carers with the skillsets required to save their children in the event of an emergency. In a regional first, 300 parents are also set to be trained bilingually, catering for Chinese and Afghan communities. Their journey began in a garage, but Tiny Hearts now has a headquarters in Pakenham's Industrial Park - proving that business success is attainable under the most challenging circumstances. Ms Waia, a former educator and volunteer first responder, was first aid trained when she was just 15 years old. She is determined to share her vital knowledge with as many parents as possible. "I've got two kids of my own and I know what it's like when they choke and when they're really sick," she said. "Because we've got such a good report built with our parents, we get a lot of feedback where they say, hey, you literally saved our babies' lives. "I love what I do - waking up and making a difference." Tiny Hearts worked in conjunction with the South East Melbourne Primary Health Network to secure the federal grant. Heartbeat of community By Mitchell Clarke A series of programs which aim to strengthen the local community have just been launched at Pakenham library. The "multi-pronged approach" will see the library work with social agencies to provide support services to homeless communities, assist jobseekers, give legal advice, host women's empowerment programs and create a social cafe for those feeling isolated. Spearheaded by Pakenham Library's branch manager Bec Mitchem, the initiative was created to help address a number of challenges identified by staff and regular library users. "As a trusted community service, staff at the library get to know our visitors and hear their stories over time," Ms Mitchem said. "Through these regular discussions, we recognised a number of common themes and challenges our members experience and thought we should get our heads together with the experts to work out what we can do to help." The growing issue surrounding the lack of affordable housing in the region has seen the library partner with Eastern Region Mental Health Association (ERMHA). Every Wednesday, Pakenham Library will now host the Community Connections Program (CCP), to offer housing options and support services to offer those experiencing homelessness. "Through the Cardinia Shire Council hosted network meetings, the CCP Program and Pakenham Library staff were able to connect, identify community needs and trends and establish a weekly 'Homeless Outreach Post' at the library," ERMHA program manager Tim Spinks said. "The collaboration and sessions have already achieved positive outcomes by provid-

Every Friday, support services for job seekers will see one-on-one advice, resume help, interview tips and assistance in filling out application forms, will be carried out by the library in collaboration with Outlook, AMP and Max Employment. Also on Friday mornings, free legal advice from Springvale Monash Legal Service will be on offer.

"The library offers a welcoming space for vulnerable women who attend programs like the 'Keeping It Together' program," Casey North CISS's Sancha Noranho said. "Going to new places can be daunting but the library takes some of that anxiety away as they are able to use the space offered to con-

"The staff are incredibly welcoming and friendly, and this contributes to making the venue one that women enjoy attending." Early morning raids seize large cannabis crops By Mitchell Clarke Police have raided a house on the corner of Corymbia Promenade and Greenbank Drive in Pakenham, seizing 84 cannabis plants. At least six police vehicles descended on the property at about 9.45am on Tuesday 3 March, with neighbours reporting seeing police in plain clothes searching the house and backyard. In a statement, police said the search warrants followed months of preparation and "intel gathering" regarding a commercial illegal cannabis crop.
The Gazette understands the house was a rental and has been told the previous family moved out last year. Meanwhile, police also searched a property in Clyde North, seizing 125 cannabis plants. "Make no mistake, this is a seriously large amount of an illegal drug, the money and people involved are linked to further crimes," a Victoria Police spokesperson said. "We will be working hard to execute more search warrants."

A 19-year-old man has been taken into police custody following a house fire in Pakenham. Emergency services responded to reports of a fire at a property on Hartland Circuit in Lakeside on Wednesday 26 February about 8pm. Five CFA vehicles from Pakenham and Toomuc attended the scene and extinguished the fire by about 8.10pm. It's understood Victoria Police and Ambulance Victoria were also notified. Detective sergeant Frank Van Doeselaar from the Dandenong family violence unit said the property had received "considerable damage". "I wouldn't say the damage is significant but it's certainly considerable," he said. "We understand there is considerable damage to two rooms of the house and some further smoke damage throughout." The 19-year-old Pakenham man, who is believed to be known to the victim, was arrested. He remains in police custody where he's said to be "assisting officers with their enquiries". He is yet to be interviewed and a motive is not yet known.

The Berwick RSL sub-branch is on the lookout for volunteers for this year’s Anzac Appeal. Berwick sub-branch president, Wayne A’Vard, is calling on the local community to support this year’s Appeal by buying a badge - with 100 per cent of funds going towards supporting veterans. “Our focus at Berwick is upon providing a supportive and nurturing environment for current and former service personnel and their families,” Mr A’Vard said. The sub-branch’s welfare program offers social, financial, emotional or practical support. This includes covering costs of accommodation, school fees, utility bills and medical/ dental expenses for veterans and their families; visits to veterans in aged care facilities who find it difficult to attend a sub-branch; and social gatherings including bus trips, carpet bowls, darts, dinners and special events. Other forms of support consist of gardening, general cleaning and rubbish removal for those who cannot manage these tasks. The funds raised through the Anzac Appeal will allow the RSL to deliver much-needed assistance to those men and women who have served our country, Mr A’Vard said. “In order to continue to offer this support, we raise funds through our Anzac and Remembrance Day Appeals. Both Appeals run for the two weeks leading up to each of these significant days. “The sub-branch at Berwick is strongly supported by our members in the selling of tokens during these periods. However, we cannot provide personnel to all the available selling locations,” he said.The RSL is calling on anyone who can spare a few hours or a day or more to sell badges. A rubbish situation I would not be writing these facts if the Suez landfill were operating within the rules of the Industry Licence: NO DUST, NO LITTER, NO ODOUR, and NO RUNOFF (unless ?) beyond the BOUNDARY FENCE. Our farm directly east of Suez landfill has suffered from migrating litter polluting waterways and litter strung up on farm fences like clothes on a clothesline dozens of times since 2016. Litter has also ruined our hay harvest crop for the last four seasons. Suez landfill runoff from both the south and east boundaries has been an issue since 2018. This has resulted in orange-coloured water full of silt flooding directly into the farm dam. The water in December turned green; even the scavenger birds departed. They knew it was toxic and we had to lock our cattle away from the “dam”. Recent rains resulted in further damage, bringing large deposits of silt onto pasture because of runoff from Suez landfill on the south-east boundary and again clay-orange coloured water, flowing into the farm’s waterways. NO APOLOGIES OFFERED. The encroachment of Suez on our land is unjust and unacceptable. When are the responsible authorities going to enforce the rules? Winsome Anderson, Nar Nar Goon.

SAUCE 1 tbsp instant coffee 300ml boiling water 3/4 cup brown sugar 2 tbsps Dutch cocoa METHOD Preheat oven on CircoTherm to 180°C and lightly grease 6 x 200ml individual ramekins. Sift flour, cocoa and caster sugar into a mixing bowl. Whisk melted butter, egg, vanilla essence and buttermilk together. Make a well in the centre of the flour then whisk in buttermilk mixture, mixing until smooth. Fold in chopped chocolate. Divide mixture evenly between ramekins. IBAC HEARING
CEO: Developer banned By Cam Lucadou-Wells Casey chief executive Glenn Patterson has told an IBAC hearing that developer John Woodman and his planning consultant Megan Schutz were “the most difficult” for council planning staff to deal with. On 4 March, Mr Patterson said the pair had been nominated “in terms of behaviour, style and a poor method of engagement”. It was in contrast to the “extremely professional” development “community” generally around Casey. Mr Patterson said Mr Woodman had been serving a three-month ban from contacting council officers as a result. It had been handed down by interim CEO Steve Dalton and was lifted after a threemonth review under Mr Patterson’s tenure. The day before, IBAC heard a tapped phone call between Mr Woodman and Ms Schutz bragging of a “strong connection” with Mr Patterson. Ms Schutz on 8 October, 2018, described Mr Patterson’s decisive response after a Casey planning officer had reorganised a meeting with her. Mr Patterson, formerly CEO of Yarra Ranges and Baw Baw councils, had started in the role less than a month earlier. “Within two hours Glenn Patterson had obviously intervened and, basically bashed (the officer) over the head and fixed another meet-

Earlier Mr Woodman told her of the “strong connection between Glenn (Patterson) and you (Megan Schutz) and Andrew Wyatt (from developer Blueways) and Heath (Woodman,
who is John’s son)”. Ms Schutz replied: “Well, they, they know about the strong connection now because (the officer) got absolutely bashed over the head. “So he has obviously went straight over, said what the f*** is this about?” She told Mr Woodman that Mr Patterson had “already” indicated that two planning officers were “on the way out”. They were indeed later dismissed, Ms Schutz later told IBAC. In a tapped call with Mr Woodman on 21 December 2018, Ms Schutz told of Mr Wyatt having a cup of coffee with Mr Patterson, in which they allegedly talked about Pavilion Estate. Regarding the Pavilion Estate, Mr Patterson had said he wasn’t at Casey at the time but criticised his planning staff for not being able to “argue anything”, according to Ms Schutz. Mr Patterson had reportedly said he’d look at the “FOI matter” in which Mr Woodman and Ms Schutz was seeking information on Casey’s staff complaints against the developer and who leaked them to The Age newspaper. At the time, Mr Woodman threatened defamation action against The Age, IBAC heard. “(If) my officers leaked material and I f***ing find out about it they’ll be f***ing fired, was what he said,” Ms Schutz told Mr Woodman. In the call, Ms Schutz referred to an arranged meeting between Mr Patterson and Mr Woodman being set for 7 January, 2019. Then
councillor Geoff Ablett had highly praised Mr Woodman to Mr Patterson, according to Ms Schutz. In his IBAC evidence, Mr Patterson said he’d long known Mr Wyatt, who had been a development consultant on projects in the Shire of Yarra Ranges. He was an “acquaintance” who he’d also met with while at Casey. Mr Patterson said Mr Wyatt, who he assumed was acting as a development consultant, hadn’t raised with him any of the planning issues of interest to IBAC – Amendment C219, the H3 intersection or Pavilion Estate. But Mr Wyatt was interested in how Casey’s planning department would improve. Mr Patterson told the hearing he knew of Mr Wyatt’s “partnership” with Wolfdene. In separate evidence, Ms Schutz said Mr Wyatt’s employer Blueways often worked with Wolfdene - run by Mr Woodman’s son Heath on projects. As part of starting at Casey, Mr Patterson said he consulted up to 500 people, including developers Leighton and Dacland – but not Woodman-linked companies Wolfdene and Watsons. He said he first met Ms Schutz in late 2018, who criticised between six to 10 planning staff. About two-to-three of them lost their jobs, Mr Patterson told IBAC. Mr Patterson said he’d also informed Mr Wyatt of staff departures after the affected staff were notified.
Wolfdene’s $1m gift to Stapledon pet project By Cam Lucadou-Wells A charity linked to property developer John Woodman provided $1 million-plus to a disability service attended by Casey ex-councillor Amanda Stapledon’s son, IBAC has heard. The Wolfdene Foundation - associated with Mr Woodman’s son Heath - funded four independent living units for adult clients at Blairlogie Living and Learning. The first units are said to be “close to completion” in developer Blueways’ estate in Cranbourne East. Wolfdene often acted as development manager for Blueways projects, IBAC was told by planning consultant Megan Schutz on 3 March. “Wolfdene was building it and basically Wolfdene had seed funded the project.” Ms Schutz provided her services pro bono for the project, such as running the planning application. “The work I did pro bono for Wolfdene Foundation was probably about between $15,000 and $20,000 worth of planning work, with council waiving the application fees because it was a charity.” She agreed with Counsel Assisting IBAC, Michael Tovey’s assertion that Wolfdene contributed in excess of $1 million. On the project’s subcommittee were Ms Stapledon, parents of the four clients being accommodated, Blairlogie chief executive Carolyn Carr and a Wolfdene development manager, Ms Schutz said. Mr Woodman had also given Ms Stapledon $15,000 towards the care of her son in 2018, as well as donated to her state election campaigns for the Liberal Party, IBAC’s Operation Sandon hearing was told. While a Casey councillor, Ms Stapledon managed the conflict of interest by declaring an “undisclosed” interest, Ms Schutz said. At IBAC, surveillance photos showed Ms Stapledon, who was mayor at the time, meeting with three people on Mr Woodman’s payroll at the Sandhurst Club on 14 November 2018. The trio were Ms Schutz, Mr Woodman’s lobbyist and former Casey mayor Lorraine Wreford and Save Cranbourne West Residents Action Group president Ray Walker. Ms Schutz told IBAC they were discussing the H3 intersection project in Hall Road, Cranbourne West - something that Mr Woodman and another developer Leighton Properties were lobbying hard for. Casey readies for relay A sea of purple will descend on the City of Casey ahead of the Casey Relay For Life event from 13-14 March. Relay for Life, an annual event featuring a walk to remember survivors of cancer and those who have lost their battles, will take place at Akoonah Park, Berwick, starting Friday 13 March. The event has attracted $127,377 in donations with a goal of raising $400,000 - with 2,500 participants ready to take on the Casey's 24-hour relay event. Now in its 17th year, the Casey Relay for Life has raised nealy $4.5 million for cancer research. The event will include a candlelight ceremony to remember loved ones lost and support those currently facing cancer as well as activities, music, and games. What makes this year's event more special is Donna Harrison, the chair of the event organising committee who has been selected as the 2020 Global Relay For Life Heroes of Hope. Awarded by the American Cancer Society this elite group of cancer survivors and caregivers are a beacon of hope and inspiration to cancer patients, survivors and caregivers, and a reminder to all involved in the Relay across Australia to stay determined in the quest to elimitate cancer. There is no better deserving candidate than Donna, who, after surviving an anplastic lymphoma diagnosis at the age of 39, is dedicating the next 10 year's of her life to the Casey Relay for Life. Narre South gun claims the Wookey at DDCA awards By Nick Creely Narre South star Morteza Ali has been crowned as the Dandenong District Cricket Association's champion player of the 2019/20 season, claiming the prestigious Alan Wookey Medal. In the count - held at the Dandenong Club on Sunday - the Lions all-rounder capped off an extraordinary Turf 1 individual season, and has been a driving force in the club's incredible rise into third spot after being promoted from Turf 2 only a year ago. The all-rounder was at his destructive best at the top-of-the-order for the Lions throughout the season, crunching 438 runs at 33.7 in the regular season games, with a blistering 125 against North Dandenong his most prolific performance of the year. With the ball Ali was equally as consistent, snaring 24 wickets at 15.1, with two five-wicket hauls - 5/11 against St Mary's and 5/58 against Hallam Kalora Park - often providing the huge breakthroughs in crunch games for his side. Ali will be a major factor with the DDCA finals set to kick off this weekend, with his Lions set for a home final against reigning premiers, Buckley Ridges. 22 STAR NEWS

The ex-Premier Cricket great crunched 617
runs in the regular season for the Bears in his most prolific season of cricket for a couple of years. Buckley Ridges run machine David White (30) finished in third position in the count, while Springvale South's Ateeq Javid and Berwick speedster James Wilcock rounded out the top five. The Turf 1 Team of the Year was also announced on the day. The All-Stars of the future By sports editor Russell Bennett The pathway for local girls into women's cricket was highlighted significantly on Sunday at Starling Road in Officer when the hometown Bullants and Carlisle Park went head-to-head for the WGCA All-Star Girls crown. In what was a carnival-like atmosphere in front of a bumper crowd, the Vikings completed the double after finishing on top of the ladder and then claiming the Bendigo Bank Cup in their grand final win. West Gippsland's girls competition has taken massive strides forward since its inception three years ago. Seven clubs competed in 2020, and the standard of the cricket played has clearly risen significantly. The WGCA's girls cricket committee opted to create a carnival where participants could have fun in a full, immersive cricket experience before the commencement of play. The Cardinia Life 'Street Team' entertained a host of local youngsters in Officer on Sunday, while Cricket Victoria's Region 8 manager and Pakenham Premier XI skipper - Rob Elston conducted a skills clinic to give the kids a taste of the action out in the middle. Perth Scorchers and Melbourne Cricket Club star Hayleigh Brennan was also on hand to help take the youngsters through their paces, pose for photos with them, and answer their probing questions. Out in the middle, Officer won the toss and batted first - reaching 11/90 from their allotted overs. In reply, the Vikings countered with 5/125. Carlisle Park's steadiness in the field and line-and-length, stump-to-stump bowling was a particular standout of the game, with Alyssa Jackel shining - claiming 4/6 and scoring 10 not out. Following the game, Brennan presented premiership medallions to the winning players, while Liz Wade - the Bendigo Bank's Kooweerup branch manager - presented the cup.
Carlisle Park and Officer put on a WGCA All-Star Girls Twenty20 grand final to remember on the weekend. Officiating umpire Michael Dawes, a small army of volunteers from Officer, and the WGCA officials were also thanked for their involvement in, and organisation of a fantastic day's cricket. Kim Isaacs, the coach of the Officer girls side and a trailblazer of women's sport in her own right, praised the performance of a standout Carlisle Park outfit, but also spoke about the significance of the All-Star girls tournament. She spoke about how over 50 per cent of women between the ages of 18 and 64 don't participate in enough physical activity, and urged females of all ages to get involved in
sport - at whatever level. "It's up to us as volunteers to create an environment that encourages them to get involved - that's very important," she said. "Some girls almost feel shunned away from playing sport - and that's any sporting environment." Isaacs said it was vital to have a welcoming environment that allowed girls to flourish - particularly in their formative sporting years. "We're in a grand final and some of these girls (prior to this season) had never, ever played cricket before so getting those new girls in - with some of them starting at the age of 10

- it's just been unbelievable," she said. "We've got girls who're 10-years-old playing in this game, and that's fantastic. "It's the really good thing about it, and as much as you want to walk away with the silverware, the main thing is that they're participating. "When I started playing cricket I started at the age of 10, playing against adult women (because) that was the only league I could play in. "To see this pathway develop, it makes you feel really warm inside as a coach, and just as an administrator of women's sport."

By Russell Bennett Tom Papley’s State of Origin footy journey may’ve only just begun, but there’s an Origin legacy in his blood. His grandfathers on both sides of his family - Jeff Bray and Max Papley - played for South Australia and Victoria respectively, and last Friday night in front of a bumper crowd the Bunyip product got the chance to follow in their footsteps. But he didn’t just follow them, he made his own stamp on the big stage - booting five majors against an All-Stars side coached by his Swans coach, John Longmire, and further cementing his status as one of the current day’s best small forwards. In many people’s eyes, Papley would have even been a worthy winner of the best on ground medal, which ultimately went to the player judged by most as the AFL’s best - Richmond superstar Dustin Martin. But Papley - despite having played in an AFL Grand Final before - was pinching himself to even be out there on the same team as the likes of Martin, Cotchin, and Pendlebury. “Mate, he said just running out with those stars - let alone getting high fives from them as team mates during the game - was unreal,” Papley’s father, Dave, told the Star News. “He couldn’t believe that after one of his goals Cotch, Danger and Dusty all gave him a high five. “But, honestly, he was most excited about playing Origin in the first place - just like Jeff and my old man. “He said he could hang his jumper up next to Paps’ (Max’s) now.” But it wasn’t just the AFL’s most recognised stars that Papley relished calling team mates. “He raved about Toby Greene (from Sydney’s mortal enemy, Greater Western Sydney) - he spoke so highly of his footy brain, and said of all his Victorian team mates he was probably the one he connected with most. “He’s still pinching himself about the game even now - he said it was just great. “He knows he may never get the opportunity again, but he said it was just unbelievable.” Two-time Richmond premiership coach Damien Hardwick led the Vics last week, and

Papley received one from Collingwood icon, Peter Daicos. “He was just so rapt with that - it’s a massive feather in his cap getting a letter from him, and he said he’d frame it too” Dave said. “And what a great idea from Dimma (Hardwick), too. He really got right behind it. “Even though the players didn’t have a huge amount of time together under Dimma, Tom said it was like having a mate coaching them. He could tell how much of a ripping bloke he really is.” The cause behind Friday night’s blockbuster - bushfire relief - was one that’s particularly close to his heart. In March last year he set up a GoFundMe page to raise as much money as possible for the victims of the fires that ravaged well in excess of 100,000 hectares and destroyed 29 homes in the local area. The page raised just shy of $10,000 in a matter of days. But Dave said his son was still hurting with the knowledge that so many people in and around his home town were still suffering 12 months on from those blazes. “He was right behind the cause because those Bunyip State Park fires still haven’t been forgotten by anyone around here - not by a longshot - particularly by those who experienced them directly,” Dave said. “He was hoping that some of the money raised on Friday night would make its way to those families too.” Thursday, 5 March, 2020
