Mid-February will mark the beginning of major works on the Cardinia Road level crossing project and motorists and public transport users can expect further disruptions. Piling works are currently underway and major works to prepare the rail network for the new road bridge is set to kick off this month. Cardinia Road will be closed to traffic between Henry and Bridge roads and Shearwater Drive and Arena Parade during overnight works from Wednesday 12 February to Friday 14 February. Those roads will also close for an entire weekend from 9pm on Friday
21 February and won't re-open until 5.30am on Monday 24 February. Vehicles can detour via the Princes Highway, Station Street, Bridge Road, Princess Highway and McGregor Road. Shearwater Drive and Arena Parade will not be affected by these works. The pedestrian crossing on the eastern side of Cardinia Road will also be closed over the weekend, between Friday 21 February and Monday 24 February. Buses will replace trains between Westall and Cranbourne/Pakenham from 8.30pm on Friday 21 February to the last train on Sunday 23 February. Congested level crossings at Racecourse Road, McGregor Road and Main Street will all be replaced with a rail over road design by 2025.

He pleaded guilty to resisting police arrest on warrant in Officer, stalking and several charges of driving unlicensed and refusing drug-driving tests During one of his unlicensed driving offences, he crashed an unregistered motorcycle into a kangaroo on Brown Road Officer in January 2019. A woman on board was thrown from the bike, and suffered non-life threatening injuries, the court heard. Other charges included failing to appear at court as well as breaching bail, a community corrections order and an intervention order. Corrections Victoria reported that Yarmouth had been “unresponsive” to officers during his corrections order, the court heard. Defence lawyer Siva Kandasamy told the court that things “weren’t going well” for father-of-four Yarmouth over the past year.
He submitted for Yarmouth to receive another chance on a CCO to tackle his drug use which was the cause for much of his offending. If resolved, “there’s a good chance that he could be rehabilitated,” Mr Kandasamy said. The unemployed Yarmouth had recently received a TAC payout for a motor-vehicle crash six years ago, and was seeking a disability pension, the court heard. Police indicated they would seek the forfeiture of the black Commodore - which was owned by Yarmouth’s father. Magistrate Costa Kilias said Yarmouth had been “very busy in a very anti-social way”. Yarmouth was jailed for 120 days, including 51 days in pre-sentence custody. He was ordered to effectively re-start his CCO, including supervision and 100 hours of unpaid work and treatment. A Pakenham ice-user has pleaded guilty to a string of charges, including evading police after being seen driving in a closed-up bushfire zone in Tonimbuk with suspected stolen goods in his car, a court heard. Raymond Daryl Yarmouth, 30, was allegedly in a black Commodore seen at a rural property on Ernie Nash Road about 1.20pm on 2 July. At the time, the road was open for ‘local traffic only’ due to the 2019 bushfires, Dandenong Magistrates’ Court was told on 11 February. Soon afterwards, the Commodore accelerated away from police on Tonimbuk Road, Tynong North. Five kilometres down the road, Yarmouth was discovered with the car about 30 metres down a gully, off a sweeping bend, the court heard. From the car, police seized suspected stolen goods - a Galaxy S10 phone still in its box
and wrapping, a 4WD electric winch, a transmission radio and a light bar. Yarmouth claimed he bought the goods. Police were unsure if Yarmouth lost control of the car - which had a damaged front end or if he was attempting to hide it in scrub, the court was told. He refused demands to take detection tests for blood-alcohol or drug levels. This was because he didn’t like the police officer, he later told police. He confessed to smoking ice earlier - further confirmed by the powder residues and an ice pipe in his car. In a police interview, Yarmouth said he evaded police because he was “dressed like this”. He was also afraid that his car would be impounded due to him being unlicensed. Yarmouth faced up to 24 charges during the hearing, including punching, stomping and kicking a man during a four-way affray at a Since 1989

Have a say on boundaries By Mitchell Clarke The community is invited to have its say on Cardinia Shire Council's 2020 electoral structure, following the release of a report from the Victorian Electoral Commission (VEC). The preliminary report is part of the VEC's electoral representation review of the shire, which commenced in November last year. Eight preliminary submissions were received. Cardinia's current structure consists of nine councillors who cover three wards (one
four-councillor ward, one three-councillor ward and one two-councillor ward). Electoral Commissioner Warwick Gately AM encouraged community members to get involved by reviewing the report and making a submission. "We want to ensure all voters are represented in a fair and equitable way, so now's the time to speak up," Mr Gately said. "You have one month to consider the options and make your submission supporting or opposing the options."

Bus yet to hit the road By Danielle Kutchel Officer Secondary College students are waiting for a bus that will seemingly never come. In November, the Pakenham Gazette reported that parents and members of Officer Secondary College’s school council had been fighting for a bus to the school for three years. Multiple applications have been denied and it seems their calls have fallen on deaf ears. That hasn’t stopped frustrated parents however, who are continuing to lobby the State Government. Georgia Davies-Jackson, whose son attends Officer Secondary after having been zoned out of Berwick College, has been writing to Education Minister James Merlino and Public Transport Minister Melissa Horne since August 2019 in the hopes of gaining some traction. In correspondence seen by the Gazette, Mr Merlino told Ms Davies-Jackson that “connected public transport services” were already available for students travelling to and from the school, essentially rejecting their appeal for a dedicated bus. In his letter, Mr Merlino referred to both bus and train services that students could use. Officer Secondary College is located around 900 metres from Officer Train Station, and a Berwick College bus diverts from its usual route twice a day - once in the morning and once in the afternoon - to drop off Officer students at their school. But Ms Davies-Jackson said the response and the options - weren’t good enough. “For anybody living in Timbertop, they have to go out of Officer to get to a train station to come in to Officer,” she said. “We’ve highlighted to both the ministers and anyone who would listen that the 926 and 927 buses run on the highway, and if they could just divert them before and after school that would solve the problem. “But for some reason, no one seems to want to take it up. “I’m frustrated and disappointed that they built a secondary school with no consideration of how kids will get there.” A petition for a bus that was started by Gembrook MP Brad Battin has so far attracted over 400 signatures and counting, according to a spokesperson from Mr Battin’s office. She added that Mr Battin will raise the issue of the bus in State Parliament when it resumes. Minister Merlino’s office and Cardinia Shire Council have been contacted for comment.

Dream car stolen By Danielle Kutchel The theft of a “dream car” has left an Officer resident “paranoid” for her property’s safety. Morgen Bennett‘s 2015 Jeep Wrangler was stolen on Monday 3 February from what the owner described as a usually quiet street. Ms Bennett said she heard her vehicle’s engine start up at about 11.40pm and saw it being reversed down the driveway by the thief. Her husband jumped in his van and gave chase through Beaconsfield and Officer but had no phone on him to alert authorities as to where the stolen car was. The couple later realised that the van had been broken into as well, with tools stolen and other personal items strewn across the curb. When police arrived, they also found a backpack with ammunition, cigarettes and knives, allegedly left behind by the thief. Ms Bennett said her car was found in Springvale two days later, significantly damaged and with stolen plates.

She added that on a recent night, they had witnessed several vehicles acting suspiciously, driving up and down the street multiple times. “We get no traffic ever, especially at night,” she said. “We have all been paranoid since and are not sleeping, now knowing about the bullets and what could have happened.” She said the Wrangler had been her dream car since the age of five and the theft had thrown their family into turmoil, with her son missing a day of prep in his first week and her husband missing work. His employees have been forced to make insurance claims for lost tools. Ms Bennett said it was so serious they had considered moving. “We’re super paranoid,” she said. There have been several other thefts and attempted break-ins reported by Arcadia residents in recent weeks. Police were contacted but were unable to provide any information prior to deadline.

Cassie vies for Miss World title By Brendan Rees A Berwick school teacher is celebrating after winning her way to the preliminary finals of the Miss World Australia 2020 title. "This is such an incredible opportunity and I'm just absolutely thrilled," Cassie Van Zeyl said. The 26-year-old is among 50 young hopefuls vying for the coveted crown - but Cassie says the opportunity to help better the lives of Aussie kids was something close to her heart. The Brentwood Park Primary School teacher has been busy raising funds for Variety - The Children's Charity, as part of the pageant's 'Beauty with a Purpose' journey. Cassie has about 30 to 40 Berwick businesses on board with sponsorship but is encouraging more people to donate. Through her online fundraising page, Cassie has raised just over $1,700 and hopes to achieve her goal of $10,000 before the preliminary finals on 4 April in Melbourne. "I honestly love children and I have always wanted to empower students with low selfesteem and push their spirits so high that they strive to achieve their dreams," her fundraising page says. "I'm trying so hard," she said. "I really need help spreading the word to raise as much money as possible to support".
Cassie is following in the footsteps of her Mum, who competed in a different version of Miss World. "This time I get to do both - raise money for the sick children and compete for the title of Miss World!" Cassie, who has been working with children for 13 years, said giving kids the support and love they deserved had been a lifelong dream. "I always wanted to be able to support children's fundraising and plan events to help sick children," she said. A lifesaving Pakenham-based venture, spearheaded by a paramedic and a teacher, has received a federal cash injection to provide free first aid training throughout Melbourne's south-east. Tiny Hearts - founded by sisters Rachael Waia and Nikki Jurcutz - will arm 1800 local parents and carers with the skillsets required to save their children in the event of an emergency. In a regional first, 300 parents are also set to be trained bilingually, catering for Chinese and Afghan communities. Their journey began in a garage, but Tiny Hearts now has a headquarters in Pakenham's Industrial Park - proving that business success is attainable under the most challenging circumstances. Ms Waia, a former educator and volunteer first responder, was first aid trained when she was just 15 years old. She is determined to share her vital knowledge with as many parents as possible. "I've got two kids of my own and I know what it's like when they choke and when they're really sick," she said. "Because we've got such a good report built with our parents, we get a lot of feedback where they say, hey, you literally saved our babies' lives. "I love what I do - waking up and making a difference." Tiny Hearts worked in conjunction with the South East Melbourne Primary Health Network to secure the federal grant. The organisation also hopes to reduce the number of inappropriate admissions to the emergency department and create a better
health care system for the entire community. According to government figures, 45 per cent of metropolitan emergency department presentations are non-urgent. Tiny Hearts has also compiled statistics from participants, illustrating the importance of teaching the critical first aid skills. After the course, 98 per cent of parents said they felt more confident to act effectively in an emergency. Almost 50 per cent reported that they had used their acquired infant and child first aid knowledge within six months of undertaking the course. Narre Warren's Shelby Cooke, who performed CPR on her choking two-year-old daughter while paramedics rushed to their home, stressed the importance of first aid training. She believes that had she not received the course through her workplace, her daughter may have suffocated. "I still owe everything to having those skills," she said. "The more people that are equipped with them, the less tragedies we're going to see with children, babies and toddlers. "It's such a frightening thing to go through - so you need to be prepared." The free sessions will be held across the region, including at Beaconhills College, in Pakenham. Topics covered will include choking, fevers, convulsions, burns, drowning, bleeding, caring for an unconscious person, bites and stings and head injuries. Fury at brazen plant theft By Brendan Rees Green-fingered thieves have been caught on camera wheeling out thousands of dollars’ worth of plants and other goods at a Narre Warren North plant nursery. The Squatting Frog Plant Nursey owner Geoff Caldecoat said two intruders had cut a hole in the fencing at the front of the nursery about 4.45am on Saturday 8 February. The nursery’s CCTV footage, he said, appeared to show the hooded males wonder around the Heatherton Road nursery for about 40 minutes where they loaded up trolleys and a wheelbarrow full of plants, potting mix and composting bags. Mr Caldecoat said the men wearing gloves, wheeled out the stolen goods to a white van, believed to be a Volkswagen, which was parked on Belgrave-Hallam Road near the Coles Express service station. “It was somebody targeting plants to plant their own garden out,” Mr Caldecoat said. It’s believed the males took about $4000 to $5000 worth of items. “They didn’t touch the building at all,” Mr Caldecoat said. “You can see them going up to the windows peering in”. The nursery has taken to Facebook in the hope the community with any information will come forward. “Please keep an eye out maybe your neighbour is planting out their garden,“ the nursery’s Facebook post said. Among the items stolen were about 30 to 40 plants including Japanese maples, fruit trees, fruit trees, dwarf pear trees, fig trees, crepe myrtles, dwarf crepe myrtles, three trolleys, a wheelbarrow, potting mix, and mulch. Mr Caldecoat said he was devastated and his partner left in tears; adding it had been some years since the nursery had been hit by thieves. “We used to get broken into quite a few years ago ... but since the service station next

Motion calling for Casey Council sacking is defeated Sustainable Australia MP Clifford Hayes has added his voice to calls for the State Government to sack Casey Council - which has been embroiled in one of Victoria’s biggest alleged corruption investigation. The Southern Metropolitan Region MP presented a motion calling on the State Government to dismiss Casey Council - however the motion was lost 33 votes to five at a state parliament sitting on Thursday 6 February. “You have to wonder why the government allows this particular council to continue,” Mr Hayes said. “Is it because either some of the councillors or some of the property developers have enough on government ministers that they are in too weak a position to move to sack the council?” During the motion debate, Mr Hayes labelled the Independent Broad-based Anticorruption Commission (IBAC) revelations
at Casey Council as a “disgrace” and “an ugly stain on Victoria’s integrity and reputation.” It comes as Shadow Local Government Minister Tim Smith and Liberal MP for Gembrook Brad Battin have also called for Casey Council to be dismissed. Among those voting against the motion was Eastern Victoria MP Harriet Shing who said the State Government was unable to support the motion proposed by My Hayes as Casey Council was currently the subject of an IBAC investigation. “I do not wish to express any views on matters which the IBAC will contemplate and make findings on. However, it strikes me that there is yet to be any evidence put to the IBAC,” Ms Shing said. She said the motion was at the “very least pre-emptive and at its very least speculative in that it relies upon a making out of the evidence and the revelations”.
Ms Shing added it was “vital that we enable those processes currently in train to take place and to be concluded before making any decisions as a government, before the minister takes any action or does not take any action in relation to these matters”. Leader of the Upper House David Davis welcomed the proposed motion but said it was “phrased in a cumbersome way which is not quite accurate and for that reason we will not support it”. “I want to note that he (Mr Hayes) has brought this in very good intent with purposes of highlighting weaknesses in our system, with purposes of ensuring that IBAC has strong support in this parliament—and those objectives I agree with,” Mr Davis said. The motion had also called on the government to introduce legislation to ban donations to political parties, sitting politicians, state and municipal candidates entirely.
It also sought to ensure that property developers could not provide direct or indirect financial support or gifts to MPs, councillors, planning staff, or their families. One of the key figures in the IBAC investigation is former Casey mayor Sam Aziz, who sold his home and fled to Egypt last November before the IBAC began its public hearings. Casey mayor Susan Serey said it had no choice but to grant a request for further extension of paid leave until 31 March based on medical grounds. A monitor appointed to examine governance at the City of Casey was due to report to the Minister for Local Government Adem Somyurek on 11 February. Meanwhile, Casey councillor Rosalie Crestani said the IBAC investigation should be respected and any motion calling for council to be sacked would be “premature” and “everyone should be accessible” to a “fair process”.

A 25-year-old Cranbourne North man has applied for bail after being accused of drug trafficking while on bail. Jarryd Scott had been allegedly intercepted in a Camry with a co-accused woman and a "large amount of differing drugs" at a servo on Overland Drive, Narre Warren just after midnight on 11 February, police told Dandenong Magistrates' Court. Police say they seized 10 mL of 1, 4 butanediol, 13 milligrams of meth, a phone and $1935 cash from the woman. A 'vanilla essence' bottle containing 120 mL of 1,4 butanediol was also found in the car, , Victoria Police remand liaison officer Sergeant Will Harvey told the court. In the car's back seat, police allegedly seized Scott's bum bag containing a deal bag of 0.2 milligrams of ice, two blister packs of prescription tablets and a folding knife.
Scott, who was an unlicensed driver, did not comment to police questions, the court heard. He had been on bail at the time for an alleged armed robbery in Clarendon Street Cranbourne on 27 July. The victim had arranged to supply cannabis to Scott and two co-offenders, Sgt Harvey said. At the rendezvous, Scott allegedly opened the victim's car door, punched him in the face, held a knife to his throat and searched his pockets. After being charged with armed robbery, Scott was bailed on CISP support, a night curfew, daily reporting to police and other strict conditions but failed to appear at court on 31 October. He was arrested on warrant and bailed a second time - this time from a police station - to appear at Dandenong Magistrates' Court on 28 February. After his latest arrest, Scott told the court
that the lack of strict bail conditions on the second occasion led to him re-offending. "With strict conditions, I won't reoffend again. "Curfews or what-not could get me a better place in life." He said he may be offered to return to a brick-laying job if bailed. In opposing bail, Sgt Harvey said the unemployed man would continue to traffick and use drugs, and drive unlicensed if released. The co-accused woman had pleaded guilty to drug charges, and was set for sentencing at Dandenong Magistrates' Court on 12 February, he said. Magistrate Suzette Dootjes told Scott that "it's apparent even if there are no (bail) conditions that any re-offending will be a breach of your bail". Firefighters slam thieves The brigade has reported the theft and police have launched an investigation. There was no CCTV footage was available as staff had turned their cameras off after closing at night. Mr Earle said the brigade’s “biggest concern” was for the thieves to set up the helmet elsewhere and trick the public into donating. “We don’t want people to be conned by it,” he said, adding the yellow helmet had red lettering on the sides if people recognised it. He added staff had assumed brigade members had taken the helmet to empty it of donations. Mr Earle said the brigade was devastated by the low act: “It doesn’t matter if it’s the CFA or the Red Cross or SES; the money goes back into the community as much as possible”. “It’s not just against the organisation - it takes away from the whole community”. Cranbourne Police have been contacted for comment.
By Brendan Rees Clyde firefighters have been left gutted after heartless thieves made off with their fire helmet used to collect donations at a shopping centre. The wildfire helmet had been gathering donations for the bushfire appeal when it was snatched from underneath the counter of That Bakery at Shopping on Clyde shopping centre in Cranbourne East. It’s believed the thieves struck sometime between 6pm Friday 31 January and Monday morning, 3 February - despite the helmet being chained to the counter. “They’ve obviously gone in there with a small spanner and undone that,” Clyde firefighter Ian Earle said. “Whether they’ve gone behind the counter to see the fridge was open and seen it or they knew that the helmet was there we don’t know”. Mr Earle said it’s believed a small amount of

Thugs wave knife in supermarket By Brendan Rees Hooded bandits have held up a Woolworths store in Lyndhurst on Sunday 9 February, terrorising customers and wielding a knife for those that tried to stop them. The group of males burst into the Thompsons Road store before 9pm, stealing a trolley load of goods. Police have been told a knife was allegedly produced and several customers attempted to intervene. The group left the scene in a vehicle and have yet to be located at this stage. Witness Daniel, who asked not to publish his surname, said he had just returned to his
car in the carpark about 7.30pm to 8pm when heard a row break out. “I heard a bit of a commotion behind me and they were taking a full trolley of shopping and running off without paying,” Daniel said. The men, he said, were of African appearance and aged between 15 and 30 years of age, and had become aggressive when customers tried to intervene including punching and kicking. “More customers from Woolworths came out and fought them off ... as the fight started one of the guys ran off with the trolley back to the getaway car,” he said. added. “I heard that they came back later on with a knife. “It wasn’t really what I expecting on a Sunday night”. Once he knew police had been called, Daniel got into car and drove around the area, checking if anyone had been injured.At one point, he said the group pushed the trolley out of the way, and a bit of it fell out “so they didn’t get away with everything”. “It was pretty intense”. Crowds enjoy the market By Jessica Anstice Akoonah Park in Berwick hosted its weekly market on Sunday, with stunning weather, scrumptious produce and exiting entertainment for people of all ages. More than 5000 marketgoers walked through the gates - which according to the event organisers Gary Maker and Catherine Waters, is a fantastic number for this time of year. “Our market is a complete joy to run. Many of our stallholders have been with us for 10 plus years so we have a history and community spirit which would be difficult to match,” Ms Waters said. “The market has evolved over the years from a farmers market with a handful of stalls in the 1986, to a thriving hub for food, plants, produce and handcrafted artworks.” Foodies were treated to an array of fabulous food, including Dutch poffertjes, churros, do-
nuts and scones, gluten free cakes, multicultural dishes, handcrafted sorbets, spectacular egg and bacon rolls, burgers and more. Children were entertained with pony rides, and adults with live music performed by local artists. “We love this market because we have regular customers coming to see us, but we also like the community spirit which exists amongst the stallholders and customers alike,” stallholder Gary Oliver said. “We are often amazed by the distance people will come to visit our market. For example, this week we had customers from inner city Melbourne, Lang Lang, Drouin and Cranbourne. “We have even had customers buying plants whilst on holiday which were heading to NSW.” The next Akoonah Park Market is confirmed for Sunday 16 February.

Picnic fun with teddies By Jessica Anstice Teddy bears and prep enjoyed a teddy bears’ picnic at Haileybury’s Berwick campus on Monday 10 February. The teddy bears’ picnic is part of the school’s buddy program, teaching students to become more comfortable in their new environment. The program requires the prep students to team up with a Grade 4 student who will act as their ‘buddy’ throughout the school year. During the picnic, students shared stories about their teddy bears and got to know one another as they ate lunch together. “Buddy programs are an integral part of welcoming Haileybury students to primary school and ensuring that they are supported during this new transition,” head of junior school at Edrington Michele McGill said. “The students will meet throughout the year for fun and educational activities and support each other.”

New year brings a new kinder at Beaconhills By Jessica Anstice The kinder students were mostly all smiles as they settled into the brand new Little Beacons Learning Centre at Beaconhills College's Berwick Campus last week. The eagerly-awaited early learning centre opened its doors on January 8. It replicates Beaconhills' award-winning counterpart at the Pakenham Campus, offering the same natural, light-filled design, programs, values and commitment to quality. Head of Little Beacons, Vicki Reid, said enrolments were strong, but there were still some vacancies available and families were welcome to contact the centre for a tour. "This is a great opportunity for children to begin their Beaconhills experience before starting prep," she Reid said. "We are also thrilled to have many siblings and college staff children. We have certainly built a very strong community focus in a very short time." She said children were adjusting to their new centre and had already had excursions to explore the college's ovals, vegetable gardens and other parts of the campus over the holiday break. "Children have also enjoyed the library in the centre, the dining room and have welcomed the opportunity to interact with some of our new centre animals. "We were very fortunate in bringing half of our educational team across from the Pakenham campus which has allowed us to implement the same high level of care and education. This year’s Cardinia Relay for Life will see the team Concepts and Results return to the track for its third year on Friday 21 February. The team has been hard at it over the past few months, raising vital funds for cancer patients. “This year we have increased our fundraising efforts,” team captain Bethany Campbell said. From raising money at cinema outings, social dinners and quality raffles, to date, the group has raised more than $8000 but has an end goal to raise at least $10,000 before the big night. When Ms Campbell was 12-years-old, and her sister was 10-years-old, their mum was diagnosed with breast cancer - and fortunately won her battle. “I want to help raise money so that one day they may find a way to prevent or cure cancer, which will not only greatly assist those who are going through cancer but also the lives of the families,” Ms Campbell said. “Myself, parents, sister and her husband, have all been involved in the Relay for Life the last three years so not only can we raise money for the future but also celebrate that my mum has come out the other end of it. “My cousin Shane joined the team last year and walked nonstop for the whole 18 hours which was a great inspiration to the team.” Ms Campell said cancer has touched the team’s members personally and will inspire them during the 24-hour nonstop relay. “I know so many people to have been effected by cancer in the last 12 months specifically,” she added. “Relay for Life is not only a great way to raise money and awareness for Cancer Council and cancer research but it’s also a fun event for all those involved. “We have found it a great social activity for all the employees at my workplace and family and friends to get involved as there is so much going on at the event with entertainment and activities throughout the night to make it memorable.”

Prospective pet owners in Pakenham are being urged to consider adopting a pet rather than purchasing from a breeder or pet shop. A number of local animal rescue organisations are gearing up for National Pet Adoption Day on Saturday 15 February, an initiative led by PetRescue in conjunction with PETstock Assist. Olympian and television personality Giaan Rooney is fronting the adoption day campaign and is urging Australians to adopt different in 2020, by adopting a new way of thinking when it comes to animal adoption. "I honestly believe every rescued animal knows it has been lucky to find its forever home and they know they have been given a second chance at a happy life," she said. "For owners, adoption means families can find the perfect fit for them - the rescue group can provide an overview of the animal's behaviour and personality so you know exactly what you're getting." Wells’ record-breaking day By Nick Creely It was a masterclass of some magnitude. A knock now etched into Casey-South Melbourne's history forever. And it was from a man who's had such an impact on the club that his legacy at Casey Fields will go beyond just the raw stats, or the ability to wear down an opposition like few others can in the competition. Luke Wells produced one of the all-time epic Victorian Premier Cricket knocks on Saturday, crunching 290 off 275 balls, and in the process surpassing the record for the highest individual score in club history - a record that was set in 1889/90. It was also the highest individual Premier Cricket innings since Bill Lawry's 282 not out in 1965/66 for Northcote. Wells isn't exactly immune to monster centuries - he's cracked seven of them at Premier level in just 25 digs, and has 18 first-class centuries for Sussex. His father, Alan, also crunched 46 first class hundreds and eight List A centuries himself. But it wasn't all rapid boundaries for 369 minutes of his knock. It was all about the build, the patience, picking off the bad balls and eventually punishing a tiring bowling group. After the Swans lost young duo Ash Chandrasinghe and Aaron Fernando early, both caught behind after looking solid - and with the Greenvale Kangaroos bowling some tight lines - Wells, as well as fellow leader Nathan Freitag (57), had to really knuckle down. The stylish Sussex star was at one point two off 22 balls, but a series of crisp strokes in succession, as well as an expert ability to work the ball into gaps quickly turned things around. But it was his straight driving that was the feature, and even with the Kangaroos stacking the off-side field in an attempt to try and force him into a false stroke, the ball whizzed along the carpet and straight into the fence at a rapid rate. At lunch, the Swans managed to claw its way to 2/87, with Wells skipping past the halfcentury and Freitag sitting comfortably on 21, and looking rock-solid in defense. The Kangaroos had a few nice moments with the ball straight after the break, but couldn't break a stand threatening to really take the game away, before Wells once again completely changed the momentum. Racing into the 70s, Wells crunched one through backward point, nailed a sweet drive into the sightscreen, before latching onto a short ball and sending it to the mid-wicket boundary in three consecutive balls. And all in different parts of the ground. From there, it was almost inevitable that Wells would reach the triple figures as he crafted the ball into gaps and made his way to the milestone at a steady rate. With a punch just wide of mid-off and a quick scamper through the wickets, the lefty brought up his seventh century for the club, but there was a determination for more. And it came after tea in one of the most dominant patches from a batsman in recent memory.

In just a shade under a session of play, Wells scored a further 169 runs, sent over a dozen sixes sailing over the rope, and toyed with the opposition as he ticked over for the first double-century in four years in the competition. The cars parked just outside the ground were also under threat, and not from the strong gusts of wind but from an avalanche of power hitting. In the midst of his extraordinary session, Wells passed the club's all-time record for runs scored in an innings just after 6pm. From 200 to 290, when Wells finally fell only moments before stumps searching for the triple, he piled on a further nine sixes and five fours as a rate triple-century came within reach. In total, he sent 33 fours and 14 sixes to the rope, a staggering 216 runs in boundaries. But all good things come to an eventually, and with the score 5/470, the damage was well and truly done. Wells told the Star News that it was the type of innings where he didn't feel any pressure despite starting off slowly against the new-ball. "I'm very proud with the efforts and the score at the end of the day - it was probably the best I've felt in a long time, and all my movements were exactly how I wanted them, and I
hit the ball exactly how I wanted," he said. "I just felt so in control - when I got in, and got settled, I felt like I could expand my game and go through my gears - they're not the strongest bowling attack, but they did just keep plugging away. "I just had fun - once I got past 200 I didn't really care about going out, I just wanted to see how many sixes I could hit, and I just kept going." It was Wells' highest score in any form of cricket he's played, surpassing his amazing 258 for Sussex against Durham a few years ago. Despite his record-breaking knock on Saturday, the Englishman still rates his County double as his finest. "That innings (258) is the best I've ever played mostly because of the situation, it was my first innings back in a good chunk of time due to a knee injury," he said. "I played a one-dayer against the touring South Africa team and (Kagiso) Rabada got me out first ball LBW, and they were questioning whether I should play the game with my injury, and I went and played, and got 258 which was mad. "That was my pinnacle, but this innings was great fun as well - it was the first time in a long time that I've felt at the peak of my powers like in 2017 back in the UK. "It's exciting for me, and hopefully I can keep this feeling and hopefully move onto the English summer back home."

Michael Wallace also batted well for his 33. The game eventually ended a draw, with the Swans declaring overnight and the Kangaroos reaching 8/333 at stumps on a wicket described by Wells as "pretty flat". Despite not being able to take the 10 wickets required for victory, Wells said that the chance to pile on a monster score and have some fun out of the middle impacted his decision to not declare on day one. "Our efforts were outstanding, and we bowled really well - the pitch just didn't deteriorate like we thought it would," he said. "A part of me probably thinks we should have declared earlier, but we were just having so much fun - there was a game last year against Essendon and I declared and they ended up chasing 390 in about 70 or 80 overs, so I had memories of that in my head. "So I thought to myself we would keep going and see how many I can get - we can't make finals now, so we thought we'd just have a bit of fun, you don't get many chances like that." The Swans will be hoping to carry its momentum into Saturday's two-day clash with Ringwood at Casey Fields, with the action starting at 11am.

The Eagles are set to soar By Nick Creely Youth will be high on the agenda as Beaconsfield steadily prepares for the 2020 AFL Outer East Premier Division season. After a string of departures from its senior group to rival leagues in the off-season, the Eagles will certainly be youthful, but with still plenty of class running around Holm Park to lead the charge. With two-time Noble Park premiership mentor Mick Fogarty on board as the club's new senior coach, the Eagles are learning a new craft in the midst of pre-season, with the highly-regarded coach expected to have his side playing an entertaining brand of football. Fogarty told the Star News that while there could be some challenges for his side in 2020, the opportunity to push through some talented kids is one that will help bring the club forward. "It's (pre-season) been pretty solid - the boys are adhering to what we're trying to teach them and how I see the game," he said. "But the numbers are a bit down. We've lost a fair few to other leagues, which is a bit disappointing, but we move on pretty quickly. "We know we've got a really strong core of players that represent the Beacy footy club. "Our depth will probably be tested a bit this year but we've got kids coming through. But we're quite satisfied with how things are going along at the moment." The Eagles are renowned for the strength of their junior program, and were runners-up in the Under 18s in 2019, but also enjoyed stunning success in the latter stages of the SEFNL and continue to build its talent in the South East Juniors. Fogarty said while its evident that the Eagles are blessed with plenty of kids capable of being excellent senior footballers, patience is the key moving forward.

The Eagles have brought in ex-St Kilda defender Brandon White after four years and 11 games at AFL level, with the 2014 Beaconsfield premiership star a huge addition to the club. White capped off 2019 by winning Sandringham's best and fairest in the VFL after a
stellar season in the state-league. Another strong inclusion will be ex-Gold Coast utility and current Casey Demon Jack Hutchins, who is expected to play a handful of games for the club in another boost of experience as the club continues to build a strong relationship with the VFL club at Casey Fields. Hutchins - who played 19 games at AFL level for the Suns between 2011 and 2014 captained the Casey Demons to great success previously. The Eagles have also re-signed a strong senior core with the likes of Cory Walker, Jack Griffiths, Scott Meyer, Daniel Johnston, Damien Johnston, Jake Bowd and Sean Dwyer all putting pen to paper, while Eagle trio Lachie Modica, Matthew Johnson and Jimmy Munro will also form part of the senior side when not at VFL level for the Demons. Fogarty said it was pleasing to see many of his players aligned with VFL football, and hopes that the inclusion of Hutchins will help benefit his young group. "I've seen it at Noble Park - it's great for guys like Lachie (Modica) and Matt (Johnson) who had strong years at senior footy and have gone down and acquitted themselves well, and their training standards are high. "When they don't get a game at Casey we'll have them which is great - obviously getting Jack Hutchins is a massive signing for the club. I tried to get him over to Noble Park a few years ago and failed so its massive. "Having him on board is enormous for our footy club - we're young and his experience is important, and while we don't know how many games he'll play it's great. "We're still on the hunt for a couple more, it is late, it's February, but we're still on the hunt - we'll see what happens." The Eagles take on Cranbourne at Casey Fields on Good Friday, Friday 10 April to kick off their season.
