Big rigs go for heavy haul thrills By Brendan Rees Big rigs and hotted up cars roared into town at the Tooradin Tractor Pull and Truck Show on Saturday 18 January. Show president Allyn Reeve said the event held at Rutter Park on the South Gippsland Highway, drew large crowds. "The burn-outs are a big attraction, there were no worries about that; they drew the crowd from the fence," he said.The show also included show a jet car display, modified and vintage track pulls, a live band, helicopter rides, live music, and trade stalls. Stand down call By Brendan Rees Casey ratepayers have labelled Casey Council's latest meeting as a "joke" after refusing to answer questions of councillor Sam Aziz's whereabouts and just "acknowledged" a petition calling for their sacking. Former councillor Lynette Pereira submitted a question to council asking about Cr Aziz's whereabouts which was knocked back, instead council announcing an "apology" on his behalf regarding his absence at the 21 January meeting.
"I think it's a legitimate question to ask where this councillor is - it shouldn't be secret," Ms Pereira said, adding the apology was "pathetic." "They're harbouring a fugitive ... He's meant to be representing his community. He absconds basically and gets paid. Wow ... shocking," she said. It comes as Cr Aziz fled to Egypt late last year before the IBAC Operation Sandon inquiry began it hearings - where Cr Aziz was alleged to have pocketed $900,000 from a
developer. Cr Aziz's leave of absence expired on 31 December but Casey Council says "any further leave of absence would need to be considered and approved by council." Meanwhile, he and 10 other councillors continue to get paid - all funded by ratepayer cheques. At the meeting, Cr Geoff Ablett made his first appearance since the IBAC hearings where it's alleged he pocketed $330,000 from a developer; however he did not seek to make a
further leave of absence. Shocked Hampton Park resident Sue Lanigan said: "This is my first council meeting I've been to ... what a joke," before labelling Cr Ablett's attendance as an "insult". "You know what you've done and yet you sit there ... he's still accepting ratepayers money. You should automatically being standing down," she said. Ms Pereira said: "He's got very, very thick skin." Station design released Merinda Park Station is set to undergo a complete rebuild as part of the Cranbourne Line Upgrade. The new station, used by around 1,500 passengers each weekday, will have a more logical layout, better access and a modern waiting room. A well-lit pedestrian underpass will provide direct access between platforms, while the main entrance will be moved to a more convenient location near the centre of the car park. Creating a new underpass also provides a new pedestrian link between Cranbourne North and Lyndhurst and means the current pedestrian level crossing can be removed. To help people get to the station, the car park will include dedicated drop-off zones and a higher number of accessible parking spaces. Key features include: centralised station access points and dropoff zones new pedestrian underpass new passenger information displays and hearing loops upgraded lighting and CCTV improved weather protection secure storage for cyclists, including bike hoops and a Parkiteer cage. Additionally, engineers and designers have completed plans for a new steel truss bridge over Eumemmering Creek, located in Dandenong South. The bridge will support a second train track running over the creek and is part of the works to duplicate the Cranbourne Line. Protecting the creek's ecosystem has been a major focus for engineers. The design means no foundation or pillars need to be dug into the waterway and no modifications are needed to the existing singletrack bridge.

Calls for Casey councillors to step down From page 1 The Casey Ratepayers and Residents Association (CRRA) lodged a petition of 27 signatures to council asking the State Government to "terminate" the position of all councillors "as soon as possible". But council refused to publicly reveal any further details of the petition with Mayor Susan Serey saying: "I wish to acknowledge the petition received by councillor Flannery from the Casey Ratepayers and Residents Association." Furious ratepayers said they were "disgusted" by the mayor's response saying council was "looking for an easy way out." "You can't just say 'oh yeah we've got a petition'," Ms Pereira said. "They don't even read the petition; they don't say how many signatures are on it. "These clowns do not know how to run a meeting. I can't believe what I just saw." The CRRA's president Anthony Dissanayake said "it angers us that they don't discuss it" in relation to the petition."In way we can't expect any more from this council," Mr Dissanayake said. He said it was their hope that councillors would be stood down and an election be called - as the CRRA believes if the State Government does sack the council and appoints commissioners this would "not be in the best interests of the community."
Cr Rex Flannery, who accepted the petition, said councillors should not be asked to stand down. "The community becomes the judge jury and hang-man. They read the media and all of a sudden they become barristers and solicitors and they make decisions based on what they've read," he said. "Nobody's been charged to anything. It's only alleged there's been conflict of interest." Cr Flannery said the public were "jumping the gun" in accusing councillors of corruption and conflict of interest when "none of it's proven." "I can't prove that people are guilty of anything until IBAC finishes its hearing," he said. He added the CRRA was acting on its "selfinterests" so its members could run for council at the next election - an accusation the CRRA says is untrue. "At the moment, the community don't trust them. We're paying for some councillors that we don't trust," Mr Dissanayake said. "If there is election the community will vote and let them vote." Adding further backlash to council, councillors voted to endorse a Special Planning Committee which will relinquish their responsibility for planning decisions after public confidence had been obliterated. Speaking in her opposition to the Special Committee at the council meeting, Cr Rosalie
Crestani was cut off and told to "sit down" four times by the mayor, who said the Special Committee was "allowed under the Local Government Act." Outside the council chambers, resident Sue Lanigan said she was shocked by the councillors' behaviour. "They were shutting her (Cr Crestani) down before she could even finish - that's rude." "What happened to having a public voice? They're supposed to be representing us." Cr Crestani said she "should have been allowed" to express her "elected rights to represent community concern on planning applications" which she described "were being forcibly removed." "They did not have my permission to form this committee so I can't see how they can go ahead with it," she said. "Sure, the Local Government Act permits formation of special delegated committees but the same Act also recognises the oath I took and the councillor role to represent the people. "The community can still convey to me if they have concerns about future applications. I will find a way for them to be fully heard." It is anticipated the Special Committee will meet monthly, starting in February and be open to the public.

Police are looking for two hooligans who ran into the path of horses during a race at Cranbourne racecourse on Friday 17 January. Footage shows a shirtless man sporting a mullet run onto the track as horses surged at the home bend during a night race. The man, who had jumped a 1.3m fence and had been waving his top above his head, was immediately tackled to the ground by a security guard. But the man managed to break free after a friend joined the scuffle and pulled the security guard away. The shirtless man continued running in the wrong direction of the track while flailing his arms as horses bolted towards the finishing line - only metres away. Both men avoided being hit by the eight horses - who luckily appeared unfazed by their intrusion. Club CEO Neil Bainbridge said it was "unacceptable behaviour" and called for the "idiots" to be handed a lifetime ban. "The club's investigating along with Racing Victoria and the club will hold some discussions with Victoria Police," Mr Bainbridge said. "Activities such as that are unacceptable at a racecourse at any level and the club will be imposing bans on the individuals from ever returning to Cranbourne racing events and also encouraging Racing Victoria does to the same. "We've got very good images of the individuals involved and we're happy to identify them today." Mr Bainbridge also praised the efforts of security who "put themselves at risk by intervening." "It had the potential to be a ... quite a difficult situation and the potential to cause injury and harm," he said. The louts, he said, escaped at the end of the track and ran off but the club was confident they would find them. "We'll come down as hard as possible on these individuals - they're clearly not individuals that we need at race meetings. Victoria Police spokesman Sergeant Cameron Scott said police were called to the incident but no arrests had been made. "Upon arrival officers spoke to staff who informed them two people had invaded the racetrack but had left before police attended," Sgt Scott said. "Police have not received a report of an assault or any injuries. "Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident and appeal for anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000," he said.

A routine passenger pick-up for Uber driver Mohamed Ashik turned into a nightmare when, he says, he had a knife and gun pointed at him. The 26-year-old ride share driver from Cranbourne, picked up three passengers about 1.50am in Cerbera Bend, Cranbourne on 15 January, before two revealed weapons and made demands for his vehicle. Mr Ashik left the car and the thugs fled in the keyless car. They allegedly returned a short time later to steal the keys from the victim, striking him on the arm with a baseball bat when he refused. He then handed the keys over and the offenders fled again. Mr Ashik sais he raised the alarm with a passing motorist and called triple-zero. He sustained minor injuries and was treated at the scene. "I thought that's my last day of my life," he said. Police say the three offenders, a 17-year-old Narre Warren South teen, 18-year-old Berwick man and 23-year-old man of no fixed permanent address, were arrested about 4am following a search of the area. They have been charged with aggravated carjacking and armed robbery related offences and will appear before the Melbourne Magistrates' Court at a later date.

Heavy rain batters region By Brendan Rees A big clean-up begun after wild weather lashed the region on Wednesday afternoon, 15 January. Residents were chocked by smoke blowing in from the bushfires raging in East Gippsland and sweltering temperatures - which was replaced by the downpour about 5pm. Narre Warren State Emergency Service received eight calls for help after severe thunderstorms brought flash flooding and caused trees to fall onto roads. This included a large tree which blocked a driveway and damaged a car in Lynbrook about 10pm where SES crews worked during the night using chainsaws to clear the tree. Two trees came down on Baxter-Tooradin Road in Cannons Creek during peak hour while flash flooding on Pound Road in Hampton Park caused chaos. Another job on Thursday morning, 16 January saw a roof collapse in Hampton Park. Senior forecaster Rod Dickson from the Bureau of Meteorology in Melbourne said the highest rainfall in the southeast was 30 to 37 millimetres in Keysborough. Ten millimetres of rain fell in Officer, while 11 millimetres of rainfall was recorded in Cardinia, and 18 millimetres in Berwick. "There was damaging winds associated with the thunderstorms but most of the reports were reported over the northern and western side of the city," Mr Dickson said. Avalon was smacked with the strongest wind gusts - which reached up to 113km/h. "Those more intense storms had probably weakened a little bit by the time they got over to Casey," he said. "We don't have a lot of observation sites down past about Moorabbin," he said, which received wind gusts up to 70km/h. "The rain helped cleared the air a little bit

And a lightning strike near Richmond caused trains to be stopped between Flinders St and Burnley.

Cranbourne resident Rebecca says hoons are terrorising the neighbourhood. 203254 Others say they can't sleep due to the noisy hoon driving which was "always going on" and "not good for safety." Casey Highway Patrol Sergeant Russell Bratton said police had a zero tolerance towards hoon behaviour and were conducting more operations in the area. "We're impounding more vehicles than ever before," he said. "The best thing is for people to report it as
much as possible so we can start gathering the intelligence so we know where it's happening," Sgt Bratton said. "The more information the better, we can actually have more operations focussed on the key times so we can have maximum enforcement." He added Operation Sumatra, which operated in Dandenong, would be expanded to Casey and Cardinia to target hoon behaviour.

A resident of 12 years, who asked to withhold her name, said cars often conducted drag racing one to two times a week in their usually quiet street. Fed-up Cranbourne residents say it's just a matter of time before a hoon driver loses control of their car and ploughs into their homes. The neighbours who live on Valepark Crescent say they are frustrated with louts regularly doing burn-outs and have called for the reckless behaviour to stop. Mother of three Rebecca, who wished to withhold her surname, said she feared for her family's safety. "We are petrified one day someone is going to come through our front fence," she said. "Sometimes it's during broad daylight and times when kids could be outside playing. "The situation that's around you can change; there can be grease on the road, there can be a slippery spot, you just don't know." Rebecca said a traffic calming device - being a strip of concrete on the median - did little to deter hoon activity and pointed out a number of rubber marks on the road to Star News - with one about 30 metres long. Rebecca said she had seen a matt black Ford with no number plates terrorising the neighbourhood. "It's not always necessarily the same person," she said, adding the hoon activity happened up to five times a week. She said the culprits had "rocks in their head" in they thought they had control of their vehicle. "A couple of times that we have called police ... they did come," she explained, who "couldn't get over the length" of one burnout. "They need to put something at the corner of Valepark and Wallis where those two streets meet so they can't come flying around that corner." Another nearby resident, Shirlee, surname withheld, said she felt "uneasy" about the hoon drivers.

Drugs raid Police have swooped on a Cranbourne West property and charged two men with drugs and firearms offences. Police members from the Southern Metropolitan Division Three Divisional Response Unit executed a search warrant at the residential property on 17 January. They located an alleged illegal handgun, ammunition, quantities of methyl amphetamine, butanediol, amphetamine, ecstasy, a large sword and cash. A 31-year-old Cranbourne West man was arrested and has been remanded in custody after being charged with firearm, drug and weapons offences. A 28-year-old Cranbourne man was arrested and charged with drug offences. They will appear at the Frankston Magistrates Court at a later date.

Dove shot with blow dart By Brendan Rees A dove has been put down after being shot with a blow dart - in an attack animal rescuers have described as a "barbaric act". Nigel Williamson of Nigel's Animal Rescue was called to Ardmore Street in Cranbourne about noon on Saturday 18 January where he found the badly injured dove in a garden. Mr Williamson assessed the dove which he said appeared to have been shot in the stomach with about a 10 inch blow dart - with more than half it protruding through the dove's back. "We then proceeded to capture the bird which we did successfully as it tried to fly away as it was still able to fly," he said. The poor dove was rushed to Casey and Cranbourne Veterinary Hospital but sadly had to be euthanased. Mr Williamson said the bird was a turtle dove which was not native to Australia.
"If it was a native bird we possibly could have saved it ... we did actually have wildlife people wanting to take it but it was after the event," he said. "Absolutely it's a barbaric act of an innocent animal." Mr Williamson said he believed a "professional dart" had been used which he likened to a hypodermic needle. "It is heartbreaking for sure ... we're just trying to find anybody with information." he added. Mr Williamson reported the incident to Barrie Tapp of the Animal Cruelty Hotline, which he described as a "despicable act". Accused armed burglar defies curfew, court told By Cam Lucadou-Wells A Clyde North man accused of two aggravated burglaries in which he threatened residents with weapons has been refused bail. Rawlin Laile, 26, was said to have been on a bail curfew at the time when he allegedly broke into two family homes in Berwick and Narre Warren South on 19 January. The father-of-two allegedly disturbed occupants, and threatened them with weapons such as a hammer, police told Dandenong Magistrates' Court on 21 January. Laile was accused of stealing a motorcycle helmet and gloves, hand tools and a motorbike from a home garage in Berwick about 2am on 19 January.
A male resident chased Laile, who had rolled the motorbike down the driveway and then fled on foot on Albrecht Avenue and Chirnside Road, the court heard. Laile threatened his pursuer with an unknown weapon, believed to be like a pole, according to police. Nearby, police allegedly found a backpack with some of the stolen items as well as a record of a police interview and other documents in Laile's name. Police told the court that the victim's description of the intruder, including forearm tattoos, matched Laile. In the second burglary in Narre Warren South, Laile allegedly broke into a garage while a couple and their young children were
home about 9am. A man living at the house confronted Laile, screaming at him to leave. Laile aggressively wielded a hammer that he'd allegedly stolen from the garage, police told the court. According to police, Laile could be clearly identified on the home's CCTV footage. Laile told a police interview that he'd been sleeping outside Trios Sports Club using his backpack as a pillow at the time of the burglaries, the court heard. He woke up the next day to find his bag and shoes were stolen, he allegedly told police. He said he then walked to a Clyde North home, where he slept until 11am.
In opposing bail, police argued Laile's serious alleged offending while on bail was "causing unrest in the community". Laile, who represented himself in court, said that he could prove he was at a family member's home at the time. He argued that the burglar featured on the home CCTV was "clearly ... not me". Magistrate Costas Kilias said Laile failed to meet the 'exceptional circumstances' test for bail. The police case against Laile was "strong", the allegations "serious", he said. Laile was remanded to appear at Dandenong Magistrates' Court for a lawyer-represented bail hearing on 11 February.

Shed damaged in Cranbourne fire By Brendan Rees A Cranbourne shed went up in flames where firefighters managed to save two birds from an adjoining aviary on Friday night, 17 January. Four fire appliances from Cranbourne, Hallam, and Narre Warren were called to the blaze on Circle Drive North about 7.45pm. The detached shed, which was about 6m by 3m, was well alight by the time crews arrived where 25 firefighters took nearly an hour-anda-half to contain the fire. Firefighters saved a Rainbow Lorikeet and a White budgie from an aviary on the property. The fire threatened nearby homes but did not spread, however it did impact a fence and tree. Firefighters say it was lucky the wind blew

2020 and more TAKING CARE OF BUSINESS IAN ASH As we head into a new decade and thinking about what this may hold in store for us all, I am mindful of the wise words of Confucius (551 BC - 479 BC): “Study the past if you would define the future” and so have reflected on what I have seen over the better part of the past four decades as I believe there has been clear, unique focus area in each one of these. Having started out in the early 1980s as a software programmer, the focus was on quality. Deming’s teachings on continuous improvement and a “Total Quality Management” approach back in the 1960s and 1970s began to bear fruit and it soon became evident to software development companies that this led to less rework and more reliable applications. In addition, the American car manufacturing industry was overtaken by the quality-oriented Japanese as the world’s largest producer of automobiles in that decade. Yes, quality was here to stay. Enter the 1990s and this became the decade of customer focus. Simply concentrating on internal results counted for nothing unless you were providing your customers with what they really needed. Consequently there arose a lot of books and advice to seek first what your target market actually needed. “Our staff (are our most important asset)” became the catch-cry in the new millennium as epitomised by Richard Branson’s famous quote that “Clients do not come first. Employees come first. If you take care of your employees, they will take care of the clients.” It is pretty well widely accepted now that your staff are “ambassadors of your brand” and as such must be nurtured and valued and those companies that fail to recognise this do so at their own peril. However, it also became a mantra that could easily expose the difference between words and actions and so managers needed to become more accountable for ‘walking the talk’. The most recent decade has been very much about sustainability and the “triple bottom line” as the effects of global warming now became indisputable. Any company that demonstrated an ability to provide quality results, focus on the customer, look after its staff and be environmentally conscious gave itself an edge in the eyes of both prospective customers and prospective employees. So what will the next 10 years hold? Well I think we are already seeing the focus here: “Wellness and Wellbeing”. Fuelled by an increase in mental health issues driven by anxiety at work, a number of companies now offer personal support such as mindfulness training, flexible hours to allow staff to drop off and pick up their kids or even offer childcare facilities. This of course has massive benefits in terms of staff attraction and retention. None of the focuses from previous decades has gone away - they have all now become almost accepted business practice. I strongly suspect this will be the way of things through the 2020 decade as well.

Aussie Day celebrations Plan to enjoy the company of locals by celebrating Australia Day this weekend at one of four council-supported events. Youngsters get dancing Cathy-Lea Dance Works has expanded its preschool performing arts program to include the Ready Set Dance classes for 2-4 year olds. Ready Set Dance classes run at the CathyLea Studios in Vesper Drive, Narre Warren on Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday mornings. Early Learning specialist Dr Cathie Harrison explains the benefits of the Ready Set Dance Program, describing it as innovative. It is designed specifically to introduce young children to the world of dance. She said in each class, teachers explore aspects of the curriculum through playful approaches which are responsive to the curiosity and imagination of young learners. “The children respond with active and joyful engagement and participation that enables them to practice and refine the skills and ca-

Sikh group aims to serve By Brendan Rees A group of Casey Sikh volunteers - who served thousands of free meals to bush fire affected communities - say they are grateful for the "tremendous love" they received. Undeterred by the raging fires and smoke, the volunteers of Sikh Volunteers Australia - a not-for-profit organisation based in Devon Meadows - drove more than 250 kilometres to a relief centre set up at the Bairnsdale football oval on 30 December. They arrived at 1.30am and began handing out hot vegetarian meals and unloading their van packed with extra food supplies. For the next 16 days the volunteers prepared breakfast at 4.30am and 'lunch' at 8am, serving up to 1000 people a day who had been forced to live in temporary shelters. Sikh Volunteers Australia vice-president Manpreet Singh said they saw it as their duty to help other Australians and follow the Sikh principles which had taught them to recognise the whole human race as one and deep respect for people. He said they received the call for help after being contacted by the Bairnsdale neighbourhood Centre - which also assisted with accommodation and extra cooking facilities. "We slept in the cars and decided to stay there," Mr Singh said. "Every day we were cooking 50 kilograms of rice ... even the lunch we were serving the 800 to 900 people. "People started to like the food and more people were coming to the relief centre." Mr Singh said he saw emotional scenes during his 16-day visit. He recalled a time when a woman aged about 25 "did not say anything; just hugged the volunteers and started to cry." Premier Daniel Andrews visited the group where he shook hands and thanked each volunteer.

"These legends from Sikh Volunteers Australia drove up to Bairnsdale from Melbourne on Monday - and they've been serving free, hot meals ever since." "People helping people. That's what Victoria is all about," he said. The volunteers have since arrived back to Casey and have paid tribute to the people of Bairnsdale on the Sikh Volunteers Australia group Facebook page. "During these last 16 days it feels like we have made an unbreakable bond, an unex-
plainable connection with the people of East Gippsland and the place feels like home," the post said. "We had received tremendous love, affections, gratitude and appreciation from all over the world and specially from local people of Bairnsdale," it read. On Saturday 18 January, the Bruthen community has invited the Sikh volunteers for a barbeque to say thanks. The food van usually provides freshly cooked vegetarian food to the people facing tough times in the City of Casey two nights a week.

Inclusion on the down-low By Danielle Kutchel A new initiative to make Bunjil Place more accessible for those with sensory sensitivity was a quiet success. On Saturday 18 January, the library and gallery at the precinct were modified for Quiet Hour, to provide a low-sensory experience for members of the Casey community who have sensory sensitivity or who appreciated the extra quiet time and minimisation of potential triggers. Visitors took part in crafting activities and browsed Bunjil's library and exhibitions. Arts access/inclusion officer, active communities at Bunjil Place, Jessica Moody, said the morning went well and had a nice, calming presence. Now, she and the team behind Bunjil Place are looking for more ways to make the entertainment venue more inclusive, beyond the relaxed performances already offered in the theatre. "It's about being receptive and acknowledging that yes, we've got people engaging with this space, but thinking about who aren't, and why are they not coming into this space, and what can I do to make that happen," she explained. Narre Warren Seniors will re-open on 15th January. All activities will resume as usual till the end of January. From February 1st, for about six months, the centre will be closed for building renovations. However most of our activities will continue at other seniors club venues in the locality. The Wednesday Club Day and table tennis will be held at Hampton Park Seniors, Indoor Bowls will be at Hallam Seniors, Line Dancing and Sing-along will be at Berwick Seniors while Cards will continue at Fiddlers Green. The Garden Club will make their own arrangements month by month, while the Gentle Exercise and Darts Group will be inactive for this period. Chandrasinghe is a rising young talent By Nick Creely As the years go on, and talented Casey-South Melbourne opening batsman Ashley Chandrasinghe continues to develop his game, he's going to be a tiring sight for opposition bowlers. A batsman with the ability to occupy the crease for long periods of time regardless of the conditions, stay focused in the moment and never waver from their focus don't grow on trees. So its little wonder the stylish 18-year-old left hander is forging a strong reputation at representative and club level. While Chandrasinghe, a self-described 'nudger' with the blade in hand - who has scored 53 off 112 balls, 44 off 97, 36 off 55 and 44 not out off 60 throughout the season in the seconds for the Swans - prefers to occupy the crease, grind down the bowlers and then capitalize, his Youth Premier League tournament last week for the Southern Pioneers' Under 18 side showed a different side to his game. And as that part of his game continues to evolve, look out. In the Twenty20 format - in which the Pioneers went undefeated but had three games cancelled due to smoke from the bushfires Chandrasinghe shone, overcoming self-doubt about his abilities with the white-ball to be the leading run-scorer of the tournament. At a strike rate of 115.1, Chandrasinghe crunched 206 runs at an average of 206, striking scores of 55, 88 not out, 14 not and 49 not out against some of the most talented young
cricketers in Victoria. "It was interesting; I didn't even know there was a smoke policy to be honest. It was a little difficult to keep the concentration levels up during the day, but I think as a group we did well, stayed focused and got around each other," he said of the tournament. "But I was a bit nervous coming in to the tournament, I believe I'm a bit of a nudger and I like staying in for long periods of time, so I was a bit nervous going into such a high tempo game. "I had to believe in myself, it was a bit tough but I ended up surprising myself, and probably surprised some other people as well." But despite an obvious ability to find the boundary at a rapid rate, Chandrasinghe is technically gifted and extremely patient, and adopts a classical opening batters approach, similar to that of his role models, ex-International legends Mike Hussey and Kumar Sangakkara, both left-handers who possess an incredible attitude towards the game. "It's about ball-by-ball concentration, and just trusting my technique and allowing myself to get in and stay there for as long as I can," he said. "If you stay in there, you'll make runs, and that's my mindset when I'm batting. "I've been taught that if nothing's going right for you on the day, that technique is something you can always fall back on, so I try and focus on that a lot." With the momentum gathered from a whirlwind tournament, the rising star's focus is now on continuing to improve his game
at club level with the Swans, and hopefully breaking through for a first XI debut. "It was a little bit disappointing at the start of the season to get a few starts and not go on with it and with the Carnival just passing it was pleasing to get some results for the hard work," he explained. "Starts are better than nothing, I'm happy with how I'm starting my innings', but a few more scores would be good. "I'm trying to push for ones selection, so another couple of big scores would top the season off well I guess. For the rest of the season, I'll try and push my case - I need to work hard for it, need a few more scores and try and make my ones debut." Chandrasinghe first played Premier Cricket at the Swans in 2015/16 after playing two games for the Dandenong fourths in 2014/15, and has since worked his way up the grades to play 67 matches, including a breakthrough century in the seconds last season. He's also been part of the representative programs for Victoria at the Under 17 National Championships and with the Pioneers since the under 14s. And he credits his rapid development to a few key people along his journey who have guided him along the right path to a bright future in cricket. "Brian (Keogh) at Casey has been a massive help for me, he's always got my back and obviously my family, especially Dad taking me to training, and my personal coach Owen Mottau have been massive," he said.
Casey-South Melbourne's finals hopes in the Victorian Premier Cricket competition took another hit, going down to a youthful Monash Tigers at Central Reserve on Saturday. The Swans were always behind in the game with stars Luke Wells and Nathan Freitag after winning the toss and batting, as well as emerging duo Aaron Fernando and Joel Mitchell back in the sheds with the score 4/27 after a searing spell from Tigers quick Marcus Berryman (4/41). Upon his return to the first XI, Lachie Sperling (21) looked terrific, dispatching young spinner Reiley Mark for two monster sixes on his way to a 34-run stand with Michael Wallace, but a horror run-out - just as the pair looked settled - was the catalyst for a middleorder collapse. Despite Wallace (51 not out) playing a lone hand in a terrific knock from the stylish leftie, who seems to thrive on the pressure and responsibility, the Swans were rolled for 125, with the pace of Mitch Perry (3/12), as well as the wily mediums from Andrew Humphries (2/16) proving too hard a task to handle. But the Tigers didn't have it all their own way in the chase. In fact, at one point, it looked as if the Swans could pull off one of their most impressive wins of the season. Seamer Jordan Hammond (1/9) managed to find the edge of opener Kyle Viccars in his second over, in what proved to be an excellent new-ball spell, before a double strike by leggie Luke Wells (2/27) saw the home side slump to 3/38. With the pressure well and truly on the home side to respond, the Tigers lifted another gear. The returning Scott Edwards (58 not out) - who looked confident and stylish from the outset - built the chase with Berryman (33) putting a dent in the Swans' faint flicker, and the home side cruised to victory with six wickets and 15 overs to spare. The Swans will be looking to bounce back on Saturday when they take on Northcote at home for day one of the two-dayer.

Binns is striving for great things in the middle By Tyler Lewis The name Jaxon Binns is destined to be up in lights. Whether it is on the football field or cricket field, the Berwick youngster is taking strides in each sport he plays. Binns has recently been selected for the Under 15s Victorian State side in cricket which will compete in Ballarat from 20 February to 27 February after stringing together some strong representative form to go along with his form for Berwick in the Dandenong District Cricket Association. The top order bat begun his juniors for the Bears, before having a muck around stint in the West Gippsland competition with some mates - but his return has been a challenge against some quality attacks, but is one he has enjoyed. "I think I was about seven-years-old when I first starting playing cricket at Berwick," he said. "Since then I have started getting the love for the game and trained pretty hard. for Upper Beaconsfield, I got to play with my mates and their dad, we played with a fatherson team and it was pretty fun muck around team. "(But) it has been a massive step up (coming back to Berwick). "It has been challenging at times but still really fun because I still get to play with mates over the time at Berwick and I am really enjoying it. "I just feel playing the higher grades I get more out of it. Having better bowlers for longer times, every team has good bowlers and they don't fall away as most teams did last year." As a youngster who has paved the way for a successful future, many influences have come and gone along the way. None other than his batting coach who knows what it takes to be at the highest level, and some familiar names down at Arch Brown Reserve. "The coach Will Carr has been a really big help," he said. "I have a batting coach Bathiya Perera who has been a really big help for me on my cricket
career. They (both) have helped me out a lot. "He (Matt Chasemore) has also been a really big influence. I look up to him a lot and try to play like he does, when he comes to training he helps me out a bit and speaks to me about how I am going with my cricket." While the appetite for success in the upcoming Victorian tournament is clear for Binns, his future in which sport he is to pursue isn't as vivid as he can't get enough of either sport each week. "I want to first have some fun and make some new friends," he said. "But to make as many runs as I can, and really put my name up there for next year. "I am still not sure (between footy and cricket). I love both of them and it is going to be a very hard decision." The Bloods haven't dropped a game since the opening round against Berwick, and continue to play like a side hell-bent on going a step further, and one that is still being driven by the disappointments of the previous two seasons despite a glittering of new faces throughout the side. On a tricky deck, Bloods skipper Ateeq Javid elected to bat in the one-day clash, but the overseas pro was, in a rare sight, quickly back in the sheds courtesy of seamer Tim Phillips (2/26). As per usual, the aggressive Nathan King (46) took to the Lions' new-ball bowlers, but the Lions found regular breakthroughs, removing King, and classy middle-order pair Ryan Quirk (20) and Akshay Ballal (29) for starts. In-form Lions all-rounder, Morteza Ali's (3/26) dynamic spell helped tear through the Bloods' middle order, but a crucial knock from Tim Ford (25 not out) helped lift the visitors to 9/160 off its 40 overs, setting up an intriguing chase. Little did the players, and the spectators know at the time, but Ford would carry his momentum with the bat into a match-winning bowling spell, and one of the performances of the season to date. Tearing through the Lions' top and middle orders featuring handy names such as Morteza Ali, Scott Phillips, Jonty Jenner, Ashan Wijayakumara and Matthew Brooks, Ford took the first six wickets of the chase, leaving the home side in a world of hurt at 6/42. With eight overs of immense pressure from Ford producing 6/19, the damage was well and truly done, with the Lions rolling over for 60, with left-arm tweaker Jarryd Straker (3/10) finishing things off for the Bloods. In another statement down at Frawley Road, Hallam Kalora Park pipped the powerful Buckley Ridges in a final-ball thriller by just one-run to keep its finals hopes well and truly alive. Sitting down the pack and needing a few major scalps along the way to stay in touch, the Hawks produced arguably its finest performance in a couple of seasons, digging deep despite David White once again dominating proceedings with the bat. Using the size of the ground to its advantage, the Hawks never allowed the Bucks to settle after winning the toss and batting, with the experience of Leigh Booth (30), Ryan Hillard (46), Jagveer Hayer (54) and skipper Ben Hillard (21) knocking the ball around in a powerful start. Kevin Kean (35 off 24 balls) ensured the Hawks would set an imposing chase for the champion Bucks, reaching 5/214 off its 40 overs.
The Hawks got off to the perfect start with the ball, removing Daniel Watson in the opening overs, but the opposition headache that is David White continued to cause issues. The Bucks skipper - playing a more tempered innings than has been customary in his time in the association - anchored the chase despite a steady flow of wickets falling through the middle. White - coming off consecutive scores of 80 and 95, as well as a 99 two games prior - once again loomed as the key, joining forces with all-rounder Jerome Jones at 5/138, and with a half-century already to his name. The pair slammed on 64 runs, with White finally breaking through for his first century of the season, in another dominant performance for the South African. But on 101, seamer Chris Pereira (2/44) broke through in a crucial double strike, with White holing out to the deep, before Suren Ekanayake fell first ball and giving the Hawks the upper hand with an over to spare. In a tense final over, bowled by the reliable Leigh Booth (2/41), the Bucks found bat on ball to bring it down to a simple equation off the final ball: two to win, and one to draw, with Matthew Goodwright on strike. But nailing the perfect yorker, sending the stumps flying, Booth found a way to snare a wicket and claim a famous win, and one that leaves them with a sniff at finals cricket. A match-winning effort from star all-rounder Ruwantha Kellepotha, meanwhile, saw Berwick recover in time to post a win against Heinz Southern Districts at Arch Brown Reserve. After the Cobras elected to bat, the Bears were once again impressive with the ball, restricting the visitors to just 9/133 off its 40 overs, with skipper Kaushalya Weeraratne the lone hand with a stylish 47. But the leggies of Kellepotha were vital for the home side, snaring 3/26 from his six overs and providing crucial breakthroughs at the back-end of the innings. With a small target to race down, the Bears got off to a rocky start, sitting 4/57 with skipper Matthew Chasemore and keeper batsman Jordan Cleland back in the sheds. Kellepotha (58 not out) proved the key through the middle, with the Bears falling to 6/98, using aggression and excellent stroke making to guide the home side to victory with six overs to spare. Judd is simply too strong By Dean Thompson Drouin Speedway hosted the latest in the Women's Crash and Bash Victorian series events during the only twilight show for the season with Pearcedale woman Lea Judd in the Alan George owned falcon proving too strong for her competition in the 'Gooses Autos Hell on Heels' in another entertaining biff and barge show from the girls. Competitors included Lea Judd representing the Pearcedale Posse, the Bad, Bad Brown Girls, Maleah, Bianca and Erin, The Queen of Crash, Leeanne Tipple-Young, gun driver for hire Kellie Latham, those nutters behind the wheel from Nagambie, Clare Lynch, Marlena Argent and Felicity Roycroft, and all the girls from South East Squad, Sarah Price, Kirsten and Jessica McKendry along with Dette and Bronwyn Miles. Maleah Brown took a win in heat one by just .962 of a second in the first race over eight laps. Brown defeated Judd, Kirsten McKendry, Roycroft, Bronny Miles, Tipple-Young, Argent and Erin Brown. Judd was fastest as she tried to get past Brown who led the race from start to finish. Winning by the biggest margin of the day in the second heat was Kirsten McKendry with a five second victory in front of Maleah Brown. Roycroft, Bianca Brown, Argent, Bronny Miles, Latham, Jessica McKendry, Erin Brown and Lynch completed the finishers in the second with this time McKendry leading from start to finish. Judd in the fastest heat race of the day won the third when she completed all eight laps in three minutes and 48.523 seconds. This race was also the closest finish of the day with Bianca Brown just .613 of a second behind Judd at the finish line with Tipple-Young in third, and Latham, Price, Lynch, Roycroft, Argent, Dette Miles and Jessica McKendry all finishing. Tipple-Young then completed the day to have four different winners from four heat races when she won the fourth and final heat race. Price broke her steering hitting a big dumpster tyre in the infield and had some work to do prior to starting the feature event. With points tallied for the feature event, Judd began from pole followed by Kirsten McKendry, Tipple-Young, Maleah Brown, Bianca Brown, Roycroft, Latham, Bronny Miles, Argent, Jessica McKendry, Erin Brown, Lynch, Price and Dette Miles. With fifteen laps ahead of the girls, a first lap skirmish finished with front of the field starters Kirsten McKendry, Tipple-Young and Maleah Brown all finding themselves well down in the
field in eighth to tenth as Bianca Brown moved into second with Sarah Price, Roycroft and Jessica McKendry all chasing Judd. A huge comeback from Kirsten McKendry and Maleah Brown saw them carve up the field to move back into the top five, however Judd led every lap and time ran out for the chasing competitors as Judd took the win from Bianca Brown by a quarter of a lap with Kristen McKendry reaching third on her recovery, Maleah Brown in fourth and Roycroft in fifth place followed by Price, Tipple-Young, Argent, Erin Brown and Jessica McKendry. Clare Lynch with great support from inside the pit enclosure from other crews had a tough time of the heats however started the final with a borrowed battery lasting two laps and Dette Miles had the unusual occurrence of overheating on the dummy grid after forgetting to put the fan on whilst riding the clutch as she waited to go on track. Pushed out to compete, she soon spun, and the gear box seized, and her race was done.
Cranbourne’s bushfire fundraiser is a huge success Last Saturday, Cranbourne Bowls Club held a special fundraiser social day in support of the recent bushfires. Local businesses donated a number of prizes on the day and as well as bowls being played by over 80 bowlers the club managed to raise over $3,000 on the day which will all go towards bowling clubs that have been devastated by the recent bushfires. Master of ceremonies on the day, assistant chairperson Tony Collins was in great form and had all bowlers and guests fully entertained with his great humour. Tony was well supported by his committee Barry Graham, Lyn Quigg, Stan Myers and Doug Boggie and many others who helped out to put this great day on in short notice. Tony went on to pay tribute to the fantastic support given by local traders, neighbour bowls clubs in particular Cranbourne RSL who came along to support the cause and the great generosity from all Cranbourne club members who came along and supported the day financially. John McKenna and Ray Travica in a game that could have gone either way with Travica starting well but pegged back by McKenna who hit the lead late in the game which had the crowd on edge. But it was Travica who steadied at the very end to win by six shots and claim his fourth
singles title at the club. Ray won his first title in 1992 and not long after left the club to play with Melbourne club in the metro competition and went on to play bowls at Premier Level. Ray returned to the club when Cranbourne joined the metro competition and played Division 1 for Cranbourne.
He then went on to win club singles championships in 2007 and 2011. Ray then went on to gain more bowling experience at other clubs and then returned home to Cranbourne this year and has now be rewarded with another club championship as well as skipping in the top side at Cranbourne. Ray has also represented Cranbourne in the champion of champion competition and so far remains undefeated with the prospect of going all the way for a possible state title. And in other news around the club, Jim Hanks has had to retire from bowls due to ill health and now resides at a local retirement village. Jim has been a member of the club for over 35 years and during that time he put in countless number of hours helping out at the club in assisting the treasurer for ten years and then becoming treasurer himself in 2005 to 2008 and until recently he was the club auditor. Jim was awarded a certificate of Achievement and Thank you for participation and for his loyal support of Cranbourne Bowling Club. The award was presented to him by club welfare officer, Roger Roscoe.
Greyhound racing to support bushfire affected region Victorians are being urged to attend a greyhound race meeting at Sale, Healesville or Sandown on Australia Day, 26 January, to support those affected by bushfires. Greyhound Racing Victoria chair Peita Duncan said GRV, the 13 clubs and participants, were committed to supporting Victorians affected by bushfires both now and into the future. "We have already seen our clubs and so many of our participants lend a helping hand," she said. "Our hearts go out to all those affected and I could not be prouder with the way our clubs cranbournenews.starcommunity.com.au
and participants have rallied behind fire affected communities. "And I can't think of a better way to celebrate Australia Day than by continuing that support at our race meetings on the day. "On Australia Day at Sale we will be raising funds for the Gippsland Emergency Relief Fund in conjunction with the Victorian CFA." Ms Duncan said there would be raffles, sponsored race names, a gold coin donation Aussie BBQ, gold coin face painting, gold coin jumping castle and memorabilia auction. "All our clubs have thrown their support behind the bushfire appeal and each are hold-
ing fundraisers at their tracks," she said. "I urge everyone to get along to their local track to support bushfire fundraising and have a great family day out while doing so." Ms Duncan said GRV would be announcing further fundraising and bushfire support initiatives in coming weeks. Greyhound Racing Victoria is donating $250 to the bushfire appeal every time a greyhound wearing the red number one rug wins at any Victorian track during the month of January. "So far, our Red Dog initiative has raised more than $20,000 and combined with money raised by our clubs and participants, I'm sure that our sport will
raise more than $100,000," she said. Geelong and Bendigo greyhound racing clubs have also backed the Red Dog initiative and are donating $100 every time the red dog wins at their tracks in January. The Meadows has donated $10,000 to the appeal, Warragul's fundraiser at its recent Cup meeting raised more than $2000 and Healesville has raised $600 with fundraising continuing at each meeting.
