Gazette lauds fire recovery team effort As Australia faces an unprecedented bushfire crisis, victims of the Bunyip State Park fires in March last year continue to rebuild their lives. Community members and organisations were crucial in the response and recovery efforts of the devastation and have been deservedly recognised as the Pakenham Gazette’s 2019 People of the Year. This was completely unprovoked.” Ms Brown said her son, an apprentice cabinet maker, would struggle to continue to catch public transport and said he has lost “complete confidence“. “He’s struggling, he really is struggling,” she said. “And it’s not just Lachlan. Mr Brown was then assaulted, with the alleged offenders ripping his shirt before stealing his phone, wallet and a bag. He was left with a swollen nose, fat lip, scratches to the face and bruises across his body. Paramedics treated him at the scene before he was transported to Casey Hospital for further tests, worried about potential kidney damage. Thankfully, everything came back clear. Lachlan’s mother, Helen Brown, told the Gazette her son would recover physically but the ordeal would “scar him” mentally. “They laid into him really, really aggressive-

Lachlan Brown was allegedly assaulted by a group of men, believed to be of African appearance, at about 3pm on 2 January outside Pakenham station. A Victoria Police spokesman confirmed the victim was approached by three men who asked for a cigarette. Feeling uneasy, the victim is believed to have run away but was chased by the thugs who demanded cigarettes and a mobile phone.

Pakenham brings in 2020 By Mitchell Clarke Over 2000 locals gathered in Pakenham to bring in 2020 during the shire's first ever New Year's Eve event. The family friendly night, organised by the Lakeside Residents Group (LRG) was held at Toomuc Valley Football Ground on 31 December from 6pm, with a closing fireworks display at 9.30pm. From food trucks to face painting, funky hair and a jumping castle, there was something for everyone as local artists entertained the masses. Lakeside Residents Group president Wendy Andrews said the group were "overwhelmed" with the response to the event, conceding this year's event would need to be "much bigger". "The idea of this event was conceived in a Lakeside Residents Group meeting in March 2019 when it was felt that a New Year's Eve event was needed in Pakenham, as a lot of our residents had to travel to Melbourne's CBD to enjoy New Year's Eve," Ms Andrews said. Lakeside Residents Group secretary Tony O'Hara added: "This followed writing proposals, collaborating with local organisations, fundraising, massive planning, risk assessments, and so on to make this happen." The LRG committee thanked attendees and sponsors Brad Battin MP, Officer Sikh temple, Pakenham Racing Club, Cardinia Gujarati Association, Barry Plant and Coles.

Police swoop and seize firearms in Officer raid By Mitchell Clarke A number of imitation firearms and ammunition have been seized during an early morning raid at a residential property in Officer. Members from the Southern Metro Divi-
sion 3 response unit and the Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT) swooped on the property in the early hours of Tuesday 7 January, executing a search warrant at 4.45am. Officers were able to seize a total of seven imitation firearms, knuckle dusters and a large
quantity of ammunition. A 46-year-old Officer man, who was one of two occupants in the house during the warrant, was arrested and interviewed at the Narre Warren Police Station. He was later charged with seven counts of
possessing an imitation firearm, possessing cartridge ammunition without a license or permit and possessing a prohibited weapon. The man was bailed with conditions and will appear at the Dandenong Magistrates Court in February.

Tiger time in Cardinia By Mitchell Clarke Tiger tragics turned out in droves, determined to get their paws on the 2019 Premiership Cup during a visit through Cardinia. The yellow and black army arrived hours before doors opened at the Officer Community Hub on 17 December, with many still celebrating their beloved Richmond Football Club’s demolition of the GWS Giants in the Grand Final. Cardinia Shire Council has a strong partnership with the Richmond Football Club through their 100 percent owned subsidiary Aligned Leisure, which partners with council to manage Cardinia Leisure facilities. Council’s leisure facilities and active reserves team leader Michael Casey said Cardinia residents were “pretty lucky“ to be able to have this opportunity. “This is an opportunity for all of the Richmond fans in Cardinia to come get a picture, grab onto the handle and take in the atmosphere with other fans and just enjoy their success,” Mr Casey said. “It’s great that we’re in a bit of a privileged position where we do have a strong partnership and they love bringing the club and the cup out to Cardinia.“ But the visit wasn’t strictly limited to those living in Cardinia, with some diehard fans travelling from as far as Kew and Korumburra for the photo opportunity.

IACC unites and educates By Mitchell Clarke Across Casey and Cardinia, members of the Indian Australian Community Cooperative (IACC) have been working day and night to assist in the bushfire crisis. The dedicated volunteers have sent six trucks through the Centre of Oneness, working with Sunny Duggal, Adarsh Kumar and Dk Tuli to raise a "huge amount" of cash donations to areas in East Gippsland ravaged by bushfires. Co-ordinating local efforts, volunteer Aanchal Meshram opened her house to accommodate donations. "Since we started this drive, we collaborated with many organisations, like the Centre for Oneness, Malayalee Association, local resident groups and local authorities," she said. Under the campaign, they collaboratively collected supplies from locations in Cranbourne, Narre Warren and Pakenham. But the campaign was also about educating the community on how to assist without getting in the way of volunteers on the ground. "I know everyone wants to support but it is essential to know the best way to provide support," Ms Meshram added. "My husband is a volunteer with the State Emergency Services and I want to advise people to not go (to the danger zones) as an individual. "There are many authorities on ground to help. We have coordinated with them and sent them donations. But going there personally is dangerous." The efforts from IACC have generated community awareness and reached more than 10,000 community members who were able to donate to various collection points set up by fire authorities, Salvation Army and other relief centres. "It was not about IACC doing the collections, it was about generating awareness

message across 10,000 people in our community," Ms Meshram said. "There is a massive amount of damage which has happened but if each one of us makes a small contribution, we can help to build country Victoria again."

Rapping, running for relief By Mitchell Clarke Narre Warren’s Empire R&B nightclub will team up with the mega popular HP BOYZ to host a bushfire relief fundraiser from 9pm on Friday 10 January. With $12,000 already raised, all door proceeds from the night will be split evenly and donated to the Red Cross and CFA. Empire spokesman Carlo Paduano said these two charities were chosen after much consideration. “After much investigation, we decided these two charities were the closest to the heart of the bushfires and being able to help people in need,” Mr Paduano said. “Our thoughts and prayers remain with all the firefighters, families, animals and all others that have been affected by the bushfires.” Hampton Park rap group HP BOYZ will headline the night after approaching the nightclub with the idea of a bushfire relief concert. “They wanted to do their first ever Melbourne show in the south east to raise money for the CFA and Red Cross, so we joined forces with them,” Mr Paduano added. “And so together, HP BOYZ and Empire R&B booked a line-up of local south east artists from the Casey area to put on a show to raise cash.” Rounding out the line-up is DJ Horizon, referred to as Australia’s best R&B DJ, famous for headlining Austereo’s RNB Friday’s. He’ll join Melbourne producer and DJ Joel Fletcher, Rockafellas and ESG, who have all agreed to perform for free. Over 400 people have already purchased tickets and more than 1000 people registered their interest on the official Facebook event, where tickets can be purchased. For those wanting to nurse their hangovers the next morning, Beaconsfield’s New Fit Per-
HP Boyz, of Hampton Park, will headline Empire R&B's bushfire relief fundraiser. sonal Training will host a marathon training session from 8am on Saturday 11 January, with all funds being donated to the Victorian Bushfire Appeal. NewFit owner Michelle Newman said the event was a fun way to raise much needed financial support to assist in the devastation caused by Australia’s current bushfire crisis. “It’s my bit to help, to do the best I can to help others who are less fortunate than I am at
the moment,” she said. “I thought why not change our boot camp into something a little bit more meaningful?” Participants will complete 42.2kms of rowing, riding, walking or running, and Mrs Newman has even vowed to participate. “It’ll be fun, intense but rewarding and I’m going to participate with my clients as well, so it’ll be great,” she laughed.
Entry to the boot camp is $15, but participants can donate more if they’re in a position to. “I don’t have a figure in mind, I’m just hoping to raise as much money as possible,” Ms Newman said. “I’ve got some very generous clients and a few who can’t make it down here on the day have said they would match what we raise.” To register, visit the NewFit Facebook page.

A culture of wheeling and dealing has infiltrated Casey Council and grown like an insidious cancer with no certainty of how deep or how wide it has spread. The IBAC inquiry is only investigating the most extreme examples. On 17 December, with the prospect of government intervention looming large, the governance arm of council’s administration put forward a motion to relieve the councillors of their role in the decision-making process and replace them with a “Special (Planning) Committee”, selected entirely by the relatively new CEO, Glenn Patterson. This was far from ideal. Unlike his beleaguered predecessor Mike Tyler, Glenn Patterson is still an unknown quantity yet to prove himself. Moreover, tucked away in the wording was a clause allowing councillors to dispense with the committee at any time. Who proposed a takeover in the first place? And why did Casey’s governance department recommend forming a committee with no details regarding size, make up, qualifications, transparency, powers, financial arrangements, checks and balances, or community input ramifications? Even this document would have handed power to a faceless body accountable only to an already potentially compromised bunch of councillors who currently hold the balance of power. But these same councillors promptly rejected this delegation model, and put up an even more dangerous version, cutting out the CEO and giving them unconstrained authority to select the “Special Committee” themselves. In what can only be seen as an act of sheer desperation, some have gone one step further.
To all the communities getting behind donating to the bushfire appeal. Seeing the pictures from Bunyip IGA and the amount of water donated, made my day.

The south-east community was well and truly involved in the Christmas spirit, donating more than $12,000 towards Casey Cardinia Libraries (CCL) annual Christmas Charity Appeal. From donations of gifts and non-perishable food items worth more than $10,000 to donations of cash, the 2019 contribution to the appeal exceeded that of previous years by several thousand dollars. Partnering with eight local charities during the six-week campaign, the gifts and donations were distributed to help brighten up the festive period for those in need. The charities included WAYSS, Barry Plant Emerald, Salvation Army Pakenham, Cranbourne and Casey North CISS, Hampton Park Community House and Transit Outreach Service. Casey Cardinia Libraries CEO Chris Buckingham said the generosity of library members
Riley Nicholas from Emerald Barry Plant receiving food and gifts for the Annual Charity Drive from Emerald Library's Sue Walters. was "inspiring". "Our members have once again shown kindness and empathy at a time that can be
difficult for many others in our community," he said. "It's great that our libraries can facilitate their generosity via this annual appeal." But the work isn't stopping anytime soon, with Casey Cardinia Libraries announcing they'll commence fundraising for the current bushfire crisis, donating to the Gippsland Emergency Relief Fund. "Public libraries do so much more than providing information and resources. Each day libraries can be seen building stronger and more connected communities," Mr Buckingham added. "Through public campaigns such as our Christmas Charity Appeal and now our bushfire relief fundraising, libraries changes lives in so many ways." All donations received through library donation tap points and via library branches from now until the end of February will go directly to the Gippsland communities impacted by bushfires. pakenhamnews.starcommunity.com.au

Dive into nature Parks Victoria is inviting children and their families to unplug from technology and get into nature by joining a Junior Ranger activity this summer school holidays. Park rangers host the free program which offers activities for children aged 6 to 12 and their families. It is designed to give kids a healthy nature fix, inspire curiosity and teach them about Victoria’s wonderful plants, wildlife and amazing natural and cultural heritage. Kids and families can watch tiny critters through microscopes on a Minibeast Discovery, follow clues to discover animals in the bush as a Wildlife Detective, or find out what lies beneath the water in a Rockpool Ramble. Junior Rangers will get their hands dirty playing games, creating masterpieces, exploring streams, catching bugs and rummaging around the beach or bush. They may even visit places that few park visitors ever see. “The Junior Ranger program is a great way to get families outdoors having fun in nature together. The variety of activities we run through the Junior Ranger program help teach kids about the natural world around them,’
said Parks Victoria Education and Interpretation Officer, James Adams. “It’s wonderful to see kids getting out of the lounge room to explore and enjoy Victoria’s beautiful parks. At Parks Victoria, we believe that nature is essential for human health and wellbeing, and everyone should have the opportunity to connect with nature, especially children. “Spending time playing and learning outdoors provides children with developmental benefits such as improved physical and mental health and social connections. All the activities are designed to inspire curiosity.“ All activities are free, but bookings are essential, and children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian at all sessions. Be the first to know what’s on by signing up to the Junior Ranger Mailing List. Check the website www.juniorrangers.com. au in mid-December for activity locations and dates, and to register your attendance. For more information, call Parks Victoria on 13 1963.
Children are encouraged to become junior rangers these school holidays.

Pre-entry is required for all horse events, except the Fun Ring. Lang Lang now has a stud sheep competition to round off the farm experience. The pavilion will once again be filled with art, photography, craft, cookery, produce and much more. The Bubble Muffin Kids Cooking Club will be in attendance again this year. They run 4 free entertaining shows throughout the day for children aged between 5-11 years. They educate children about healthy eating in a fun way. There are a host of other free activities such as an animal nursery, face painting, balloon twisting and a free art activity with the wonderful Bob Greaves.
Lang Lang locals Logan, Skye, Lilly and Kacie enjoyed the action at last year's show. 176903 Also on offer are the usual showbags and sideshow rides, among other things to keep the kids entertained. What is Organic? Whole systems approach - Organics is not just "chemical-free". It is whole systems or holistic means of growing and handling food. The entire system is linked - Soil, Plants, Ani-

Guaranteed - To guarantee that products are organic, they need to be certified. Organic certification involves auditing farming and production methods to ensure that they comply with the guidelines of organic production. The most popular Organic auditor in Australia is ACO, with almost 70 per cent of all certified organic operators in Australia certified through them. Rigorous standards - Standards setting follows a highly transparent process with the industry's key stakeholders providing input via the Australian Organic Advisory Groups. Star sprinter Whiskey Riot catapulted to the head of betting markets following glamour greyhound Hooked On Scotch’s shock withdrawal from the final due to injury. A winner of the $435,000-to-the-winner Group 1 Melbourne Cup at Sandown Park in late November last year, Whiskey Riot - trained at Rowsley by Anthony Azzopardi - has now been installed as $2.50 race favourite on TAB Fixed Odds. Whiskey Riot is striving to become the third greyhound in four years to land the Melbourne Cup-Warragul Cup double - Aston Dee Bee (2017/18) and Ando’s Mac (2016/17). Ironically, his close mate - leading NSW trainer Jason Mackay - achieved the feat with Ando’s Mac. Mackay stayed with Azzopardi during that Victorian campaign. “It would be fantastic to emulate a very close friend… I’ve known him (Mackay) for more than 20 years,” Azzopardi said. Azzopardi relocated to Victoria from Shanes Park, on the outskirts of Penrith in Western Sydney, in early 2016. And four years later says he has no regrets with the move. “Victorian greyhound racing is a very professional outfit… For starters, the tracks are a lot better; it gives young greyhounds every opportunity,” Azzopardi said. “I just like the whole setup, it’s the best state for greyhound racing; the top echelon.” Azzopardi looked up to the heavens as Whiskey Riot crossed the line in the Melbourne Cup, dedicating the victory to his late father Charlie who passed away aged 69 due to lung failure in 2001. tion if Whiskey Riot claims the $47,000-towinner Warragul Cup, which would increase his stakes to $686,810. “Dad was my mentor in life and greyhound
racing… He was an amazing man,” Azzopardi said. “We have nine siblings in the family (7 boys; 2 girls) and he loved us all.” Azzopardi said his father “treated us all the

‘Reddy’ to help fire effort? Greyhound Racing Victoria will donate $250 to the bushfire appeal every time a greyhound wins a race from the red box at any Victorian track during the month of January. GRV Board Chair Peita Duncan, along with the Chair of Greyhound Clubs Victoria, Adrian Scott, said GRV, the 13 Victorian clubs and participants had a proud history of banding together to help those in need and the “Red Dog’’ initiative was just one way we could all show our support to the thousands of Victorians going through tough times. “We will also be naming a race at every meeting in honour of our brave emergency services personnel who, day after day, are putting themselves on the line to fight these horrendous fires,’’ Ms Duncan said. “Our hearts go out to all those affected and
I will be cheering the red dog all through January and hope we can raise tens of thousands of dollars for fire affected communities. “In addition to the “Red Dog” appeal I know most, if not all, of our clubs will be holding their own separate fundraisers.” Ms Duncan said Warragul had plans for a fundraiser at its Cup meeting next week and Sale also planned to raise funds at its Australia day meeting. “So, cheer on the “Red Dog” in January and get along to your local greyhound racing club to support this important initiative for the Victorian community.’’ With 17 dogs winning from the red box in the first four days of January the “Red Dog’’ appeal is off to a flying start with $4250 already in the bushfire appeal.
and third to Get It Gizmo in the Topgun. He was also third to Hooked On Scotch in the G3 Shootout. And Azzopardi says the seven-time group race finalist, who recently finished second to Western Envoy in the G2 Ballarat Cup, has become “a real professional”. “You need to pick and choose your races, and practice makes perfect… He’s been constantly meeting the top brass and that’s improved him,” Azzopardi said. He added: “He’s really in the race now… He’s a real big contender. I’d like to see him win a few more group races and then retirement to stud beckons.” In a treat for patrons, Richmond premiership forward Jack Riewoldt will be a special guest at the Warragul Cup meeting.

“He never stopped trying to teach us things, especially working hard for everything you get in life. His last words to me were, ‘I’ve had such a great life… I have a fantastic wife (Georgina) and family. I’m dying a happy man’,” Azzopardi said. “I wear a chain around my neck in his memory, and there’s not a day I don’t think about him. He was, and always will be, my hero,” he added. A winner of 18 races (with 11 seconds and two thirds) from 38 starts, Whiskey Riot broke his G1 jinx when he defeated Western Envoy and his nemesis Hooked On Scotch in the Melbourne Cup. He had previously finished second to Hooked On Scotch in the Adelaide Cup, second to Sennachie in the Maturity Classic,
