There are some simple steps you can take straight away to stay safe this ire season.
Make a ire plan and know your trigger to enact it. Talk to your loved ones and make sure they know the plan too. Know where you’ll get your emergency information from and have your emergency kit ready to go. And for more information on how to prepare, visit vic.gov.au/knowire. Taking the right steps now could make all the difference.
Prepare early for survival. Danger lies in the healthy grass growth fed by spring rains, says CFA Assistant Chief Oficer for the South East Region Trevor Owen. The lush, tall grasslands are expected to quickly dry out to a ire hazard within a few weeks, Mr Owen said. Residents hit by the devastating Bunyip State Park ires in March will be particularly nervous. The fuel loads remain high in surrounding forest at Maryknoll, Garield and Bunyip. Even in suburban areas, parks and reserves carry high fuel loads of trees, shrubs and grass. “Being prepared” is again the
key advice. Preparation, such as cutting back shrubs and trees to allow clear gate access for ire trucks, needs to happen now, not on the day of the ire. Also remember
“What’s more important is your life.” to remove mulch from around the base of homes, maintain sprinklers and water pumps in working order, get appropriate hoses and remove leaves from roof gutters. Don’t expect ireys to save your property - especially in a high
ire-risk area on a severely hot day, Mr Owen says. “You can’t expect ireighters and volunteers to put themselves in danger to protect a property that they are unlikely to save anyway. “Last season, people’s assumptions were that we would. “People need to accept responsibility and do what they can to protect themselves, not assume that a ire truck will be there.” As hard as it is, Mr Owen says the best decision may be to leave earlier in the day and to accept your property might be destroyed.

Facts you may not know about fire Conditions in Victoria make it one of the most bushire-prone regions in the world, along with California and Spain. Just two weeks of hot, dry and windy weather creates potentially disastrous bushire conditions that normal Victorian homes are not equipped to survive. At 1100°C, radiant heat from bushires can kill from up to 300 metres away and cause trees to combust without touching them.
Fires can travel at 25km/h, making them impossible to outrun. A change in wind direction can alter their trajectory in seconds and they move twice as fast uphill on a slope of just 10 degrees. Burning embers can spread bushires up to 40km ahead of the ire front, starting dangerous new spot ires in seconds. Rural grassires can be just as dangerous as bushires, travelling faster and starting earlier due to grass drying out more quickly.

Pakenham businesses were targeted by a woman who allegedly urged for "donations", following an elderly man falling victim to a hit and run incident on Tuesday. The blonde-haired woman, believed to be in her 30s, allegedly claimed to be a family friend of victim Kelvin Rees. She visited multiple businesses along Pakenham's Main Street as the incident was occurring in the Main Street Plaza car park about 9am.
A staff member from the florist on the corner of John and Main Streets stated she knows Mr Rees, and doesn't believe his wife would "set someone up to go asking for money". "We know the family very well - we see them on a daily basis," the woman, who wishes to remain anonymous, said. "To me, I just thought it was out of character because I know them and I don't reckon she would've put someone up to that." The alleged scammer also visited a real es-

When did you learn to play the bugle and what got you interested? I started playing the bugle in 2001 and the thing that got me interested was listening to the last post being played and seeing the images and veterans talking about mates and events that hit them at the time of the bugle being played.

The Hallam Valley Trail is a picturesque cycling and walking track that winds through the Hallam Creek Valley, taking in many Casey landmarks. It's also perfect for bird watchers who might spy a variety of feathered fauna. The circuit is 10km long and flat concrete, good for all abilities. Main parking areas are at KM Reedy Reserve and Sweeney Reserve, and while the trail can be accessed at any point, main entrances are on Hallam Road, Shrives Road and Narre Warren-Cranbourne Road.

Lysterfield Park offers many paths for cyclists and walkers. Cyclists should pay attention to signs that indicate where a path is for walking only. There is a network of gravel bush tracks that are well-loved by runners too. Look out for some of the bouncy locals, kangaroos and wallabies!

Hilltop Nature Reserve in Cranbourne North is a good place for a stroll with the family. This trail is a little shorter than others but offers good views and is close to open areas for the kids to stop and play. Visitors have spotted wallabies, echidnas and snakes in the past, so keep an eye out!
How honourable do you feel to be invited each year at the Cranbourne cenotaph to sound the Last Post at Anzac Day and Remembrance Day services? For me Anzac Day and Remembrance day is about remembering how much we have to thank our returned wounded and killed veterans but also these days are both about reflection and honour respect mateship and loyalty these men and women took to the battlefields and peace keeping operations as it says in the bible: "No greater love has no man than to lay down his life for his brothers or sisters". What made you decide to join the Salvation Army in Ferntree Gully and what opportunities has this provided? I decided to be at Ferntree Gully Corp because it has a brass band and the opportunity it has provided me with is being able to give back to the community and also play the bugle for all of us to remember what the valiant men did for our freedom. What is your full-time job? I'm a carer for my dad after he got bowel cancer in February of 2018. He has the same fighting attitude as a veteran as his dad fought on Ambon and escaped but we pray dad will keep fighting and showing other cancer sufferers that there is hope. What's your favourite holiday spot in Australia? My favourite holiday spot in Australia is Walhalla as I also volunteer up there as a guard on
the train it is so beautiful and peaceful. What is your favourite book? My favourite book is squadron 303 which is about the polish squadron during the Battle of Britain. At school I ... I was part of the rock band as they needed a horn player I really enjoyed those days. What's something people don't know about you? What people don't know about me is I have been in foster care, had families abuse me and
threaten to do harm to me but I am a survivor. Also if anyone is in that situation there is help and support out there. If you were PM for a day, what would you do? If I was PM for a day I would try to help all the veterans to get housing and the support that they need as we should show them the respect and honour they are sincerely overdue for. Best concert/live show/performance you have attended? Best live show I have ever been to is the stage production of the Lion King the way the animals come to life and the music it's amazing.

Milly tops the Oaks Day fashion stakes By Jessica Anstice The bar was set high for fashionistas vying for first place in Fashions on the Field at the Pakenham Gazette Oaks Day on Thursday. Faced with the challenging task of choosing the day’s best dressed, racing personality and MC Casey Bruce said the local judges, Gavin Saunders, Leanne Duiker and Brooke Cassar, chose deserving winners. For the first time in Pakenham racing history, Fashions on the Field saw the gentlemen compete against the women. “I thought that men actually fronted up to the ladies quite well and I could see there were a couple of men who competed that were really well dressed,” Ms Bruce said. “It’s hard for the men to compete against the ladies: Can it be done? Yes it can. But did we see it today? No, we didn’t which is disappointing.” Milly Smith from Dromana took out first prize in the Most Fashionable category. “I’m really happy and excited that I won,” Ms Smith said. “I entered a lot of Fashions on the Fields before I had a baby but that was seven months ago now so I thought I’d get back into it.
“I’m wearing a dress that we cut into a skirt and added a white top to match the headpiece.” Gaye Weir from Perth, Western Australia, claimed first prize in the Most Elegant category, with Officer’s Jenean Richards coming in second. “I was just blown away and very surprised - I couldn’t even think when I found out that I had won,” Ms Weir explained. “This was my first time entering Fashions on the Fields and I was talked into it by my friend. “The fashion here is fantastic. It’s unbelievable. There were so many beautiful outfits.” Ms Bruce described the day as “quite challenging” with the poor weather, but the spirits were not dampened. “We had to move the stage to accommodate for the weather but the club did a wonderful job in moving it to a space that was undercover,” she said. “It was interesting because even though it was freezing cold, a lot of the contenders stuck to their original outfits, and they didn’t falter so that was good. “The day overall was great but I do feel sorry for all of the racing clubs this year because the weather has really cut their crowd numbers in half.”

Taking a tiger by the tail By Brendan Rees A deadly snake has been caught in the front yard of Cranbourne South property before being safely released. Barry Goldsmith from Snake Catcher Victoria said he was called out to the property after the owner spotted the critter slithering in the garden on Wednesday 6 November. "It was just hiding, when I rustled it, it came flying out so that was good; textbook capture," he said. Video of the capture was posted to Mr Goldsmith's Snake Catcher Victoria Facebook page. The caption read: "Here's a feisty Cranbourne tiger snake. Nice early morning heart starter." At one stage Mr Goldsmith used his hand to lift a shrub in an attempt to the find the snake before it spilled out onto a nearby path. "I was holding it by the tail, that's the only time a snake's dangerous when you're interacting with it," he said. "Any other time they're not going to jump out of the grass and bite ya, he just wants to be left alone. "I let him loose on some private property". Mr Goldsmith, who has been catching snakes for 40 years, says he's had about 30 callouts to snakes in the South East area for the past six months. His recent catch, he said, was "another day in the office". When asked where he finds snakes, Mr Goldsmith said "Where don't I find them? Everywhere". "Inside the house, toilets, walls, underneath fridges, underneath Christmas trees ... washing machines, chicken coups. "There is no increase in snakes this year as oppose to any other year," he said. "If you spot a snake all you have to do is step around it, give it some room - he's not go-
ing to jump and bite you, he's not going to attack you," Mr Goldsmith said. "I've never been attacked and never been bitten," he said after having handled thousands of snakes.

health care system for the entire community. According to government figures, 45 per cent of metropolitan emergency department presentations are non-urgent. Tiny Hearts has also compiled statistics from participants, illustrating the importance of teaching the critical first aid skills. After the course, 98 per cent of parents said they felt more confident to act effectively in an emergency. Almost 50 per cent reported that they had used their acquired infant and child first aid knowledge within six months of undertaking the course. Narre Warren's Shelby Cooke, who performed CPR on her choking two-year-old daughter while paramedics rushed to their home, stressed the importance of first aid training. She believes that had she not received the course through her workplace, her daughter may have suffocated. "I still owe everything to having those skills," she said. "The more people that are equipped with them, the less tragedies we're going to see with children, babies and toddlers. "It's such a frightening thing to go through - so you need to be prepared." The free sessions will be held across the region, including at Beaconhills College, in Pakenham. Topics covered will include choking, fevers, convulsions, burns, drowning, bleeding, caring for an unconscious person, bites and stings and head injuries. A lifesaving Pakenham-based venture, spearheaded by a paramedic and a teacher, has received a federal cash injection to provide free first aid training throughout Melbourne's south-east. Tiny Hearts - founded by sisters Rachael Waia and Nikki Jurcutz - will arm 1800 local parents and carers with the skillsets required to save their children in the event of an emergency. In a regional first, 300 parents are also set to be trained bilingually, catering for Chinese and Afghan communities. Their journey began in a garage, but Tiny Hearts now has a headquarters in Pakenham's Industrial Park - proving that business success is attainable under the most challenging circumstances. Ms Waia, a former educator and volunteer first responder, was first aid trained when she was just 15 years old. She is determined to share her vital knowledge with as many parents as possible. "I've got two kids of my own and I know what it's like when they choke and when they're really sick," she said. "Because we've got such a good report built with our parents, we get a lot of feedback where they say, hey, you literally saved our babies' lives. "I love what I do - waking up and making a difference." Tiny Hearts worked in conjunction with the South East Melbourne Primary Health Network to secure the federal grant. “This centre provides a place to not only appreciate and participate in all things art and culture but is a meeting place for artists and creators to share their ideas and inspirations.” Cardinia Shire Deputy Mayor Collin Ross acknowledged that “there are a lot of people whose gifting probably isn’t in sport, it’s in art” and therefore this facility will provide those people with “an avenue to pursue and feel excited about what council is doing to try and help their pursuits”. “Council already spends 10’s of millions of dollars on sports and recreation, which is wonderful, but the arts area has always sort of been left behind,” Cr Ross said. “It’s the first time this facility has been expanded for 20 years so it’s really exciting for the art group within our shire.”

Cardinia’s newest art space was officially opened at the Cardinia Cultural Centre in Pakenham on Friday 8 November. The Cardinia Cultural Centre underwent a redevelopment worth almost $9m that saw parts of the existing facility updated and new sections added. Cardinia Shire Council provided $5.9m to fund the upgrades, adding to the State Government’s Growing Suburbs Fund which contributed $3m towards the project. Cardinia Cultural Centre is now equipped with a new art space, dance/rehearsal studios, a workshop, a laundry, a new entrance and foyer, more car parking space and better amenities. At a special VIP official opening and gallery launch Cardinia Mayor Graeme Moore described the facility as a “place of social and artistic significance”. “In my opinion, it’s the heart of Cardinia and I’m sure people will come from all over to visit this facility that promotes art training and participation in art pursuits,” Cr Moore said. “I’m extremely proud. This extension has delivered such an impressive and unique gallery space which we’ve needed for a long time. “Now and in the future, people will be able to visit the gallery to appreciate projects that allow professional and community artists to work together to make all kinds of visual and sound art exhibitions and installations.” Amongst those excited over the new art facility were members of the Cardinia Arts Society, including visual artist Sue Jarvis who was thrilled to see the facility up and operating. “I think the gallery’s wonderful. We’ve waited for years for this - some of us generations really,” Ms Jarvis said. “It’s just wonderful that we’ve got something close to the Cultural Centre, close to a cafe where you can sit down and think about what you see - it’s a bit hard if you have a gallery that’s not in the middle of the community. “I think it’s going to be brilliant for the shire here to have its own art place.” Ms Jarvis confirmed that the next annual Pakenham Art Show will be held inside the Cardinia Cultural Centre however it will be an “edited version” in order to fit into the space. “It will be really great for people to know that they have actually had their work shown in the local gallery because there’s no gallery here in Pakenham,” she added. “There are so many artists and people in this area that we need to show that it’s not just a wilderness but there is so much going on.” Bass MP Jordan Crugnale, alongside Cr Moore, officially unveiled the Cardinia Cultural Centre plaque. “This $8.9m state-of-the-art development provides even more opportunities for the growing number of residents in the area to experience a wide range of performances, exhibitions and activities,” Ms Crugnale said. “I’m thrilled that through the Growing Suburbs Fund we contributed $3m towards this artistic focal point for Cardinia shire and importantly the wider region

Changing Casey If you have ever felt that Casey Council could be organised better or that it has too many councillors, now is your chance to act. Put in a submission to the Victorian Electoral Commission’s Representational Review by 4 December 2019. In my opinion,Casey council needs to change and one way to achieve change would be for the Victorian Electoral Commission to change Casey Council from its current multicouncillor,subdivided model, with 11 councillors and six wards, to an unsubdivided model with fewer councilors and no artificial ward boundaries. This would offer many advantages including substantial savings on councillors’ annual allowances and their large (and often unnecessary) travel allowances claimed by some councilors who state they are interested in local affairs, but spend thousands of dollars of ratepayers' money on overseas travel. An unsubdivided representational Casey
Council will provide residents with the opportunity to vote for all their councillors at election time. It will maintain the principle of one vote one value and help discourage “dummy" candidates from standing by NOT giving power over election outcomes to dodgy preference dealers. The Victorian Electoral Commission should give more power to voters, under any revised municipal model, by only requiring voters to vote for their preferred candidates, in proportion to the new number of councillor vacancies, instead of voters being required to compulsorily vote for, and preference, every single candidate named on their ballot paper. A unsubdivided representational Casey model will also have the advantage of maintaining equal weight for all votes and preventing any malapportionate that can happen under multi-ward council models. By Brendan Rees Victorian MPs visited two government projects in Hampton Park on Thursday 7 November which has helped create jobs and skills for the disadvantaged. Assistant Treasurer Robin Scott joined Member for Cranbourne Pauline Richards and Member for Narre Warren South Gary Maas at the Hampton Park resource recovery centre which is operated by Outlook Environmental. Outlook Environmental is working in partnership with the State Government since the Social Procurement Framework was launched in April 2018, helping disadvantaged Victorians benefit from Victoria's Big Build. Outlook Environmental manage and recycle construction waste material from some of the state's major infrastructure projects, including level crossing removals and the Metro Tunnel Project. The MPs also visited the Evans Road level crossing where Outlook Environmental employees collect the waste and takes it to their recovery centre - where the company recycles about 90 per cent of construction materials, such as concrete, plastic, timber sleepers and metals. More than 70 per cent of Outlook Environmental staff are people with disability or from a marginalised background. Since signing their first Labor Government contract in 2017, they have created an additional 30 new jobs, increasing the number of staff to about 150 employees. Assistant Treasurer Robin Scott said it was the State Government's aim to benefit as many Victorians as possible through their projects "that's why we consider the social or environmental possibilities with every purchase we make." A man who has been jailed after police seized over 140 cannabis plants in his Berwick home claims he was supplying medical marijuana. Police executed a search warrant at Robin McGillien's Tennyson Close home on 18 July last year when they discovered an "elaborate hydroponic setup" located at the rear of the house, encompassing six rooms. In an interview with police, the 63-year-old stated his motivation behind the operation was to "help people with medical issues" and that it was not for profit. Mr McGillien told police he only sold the weed to cover establishment costs - the rest was used for personal medical purposes with some given away to friends. During the search, not only did police locate two firecrackers in a filing cabinet drawer, they also discovered that the crop house was powered by an illegal electrical bypass. With no prior criminal history, Mr McGillien said he paid someone $8000 to install the electrical bypass, resulting in the overall setup costing him between $22,000 and $25,000. The "sophisticated" setup included carbon filters, exhaust fans, water pumps for irrigation and timing devices. County Court Judge Irene Lawson said the offending was "well planned and executed". "Having regard to the sophisticated nature of the setup and its extent ... I consider that this was a commercial operation," she said. "Whilst accepting that you were altruistic with respect to your intended distribution of the cannabis oil, nonetheless, there was a degree of commerciality to your venture and this is not the case of spontaneous offending." Mr McGillien was sentenced to two years and three months' prison with a non-parole period of nine months. In respect to the theft of electricity, Mr McGillien will compensate Energy Australia in excess of $7000.

Survivor is face of hope By Brendan Rees In February this year Nat Wenke found a lump on her breast while showering. Not thinking much of it, she texted her husband telling him she would see a doctor that night and not to stress. Three days later the mother of four was diagnosed with stage three breast cancer, just two weeks shy of her 43rd birthday. She has fought hard all year and to her relief she given the news she was cancer free on the 25 September. "Your life just changes and I don't think I'll ever get back to normal," Nat says. On 16-17 November, Nat of Carrum Downs will join her family in the annual CranbourneNarre Relay for Life at Casey Fields in Cranbourne East - which raises funds for the Cancer Council of Victoria. So far 19 teams have signed up for the event which has already raised nearly $30,000. Nat's daughter, Hayley Zantuck, started the team 'Wenke's Warriors' to support her mum and will be taking part in the Relay for Life for the first time, celebrating the hope they have for the future. Nat has also been selected as this year's Face of Hope - a person who inspires their team and the community. She will have the honour of reading the Relay for Life Oath at the opening ceremony and also cutting the ribbon. "It's not something you want to have a team for but we are here ... we're going to raise as much as we can and support everybody," Nat says. Nat is currently undergoing radiation ther-
apy to treat due to the cancer spreading to lymph nodes under her arms but doctors have confirmed it "hasn't gone anywhere else". "I'm starting to get tired now, I'm three weeks in ... my bones are starting to fatigue," she says. Nat described her six months of chemo therapy as "horrible" where she often felt sick for the first three months. "The thing I hate about it is the effect it has on your friends and family and me being a mum I try and double everything and do it myself," she says. "I'm always helping but I never ask. I had to reply on other people. I'm very independent and I lost all of that. "You just push on because you have to," she adds. "There has been progress made because 10 years ago I had of got this cancer I would've been a goner. There's a drug called Herceptin that I take and that's the life saver". Details for the Relay for Life: Starts at 4pm Saturday 16 November to 12pm Sunday 17 November. There will also be kids activities, live entertainment and food trucks. The opening ceremony will start at 3.45pm on Saturday with a candle light ceremony at 8.30pm. The closing ceremony will be held at noon on Sunday.

Ballet at Bunjil By Jessica Anstice Masters of Choreography is returning to Bunjil Place with its latest dance theatre show, Music Box. Town longs for coast walk By Brendan Rees Tooradin residents have backed a proposal to build a walking trail that would encompass the picturesque Mangrove region of Western Port Bay and potentially attract "busloads of tourists". In a big push to promote tourism, Casey Council's has plans for a 'Casey Coastal Trail' which would link up the coastal villages of Blind Bight, Pearcedale and Tooradin. Under the plan, the trail would allow visitors to wander the flooded mangrove forest, tidal salt marshes, and seagrass channels and include a lookout with scenic views across Western Port Bay. It would also feature information boards, bird viewing boxes and/or seats. Councillor Geoff Ablett put forward a motion in October to include the Casey Coastal Trail into council's Draft Walk and Ride Strategy 2019-41 with a feasibility study also to be undertaken - however this would be subject to funding in the 2020-21 council budget. "Most of it would be a gravel path but there would be a huge board walk out over the mangroves and make Tooradin a real tourist attraction that it is," Cr Ablett said, adding "I'm pretty confident the feasibility will be very positive". He said the project was the "number one item" the people of Tooradin wanted in their town plan "which we're about to start working on". Cr Ablett said the study would also need to consider the "complexities" of land ownership - which is currently shared by Melbourne Water, Parks Victoria, Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning - "to negotiate these types of outcomes". Emotional win for locals Local trainers dominated the Pakenham Gazette Oaks Day race meeting on Thursday 7 November, winning five of the seven races. Gun trainer Phillip Stokes led the way with a treble - bookending the meeting with Purvies Princess and Sweet Alvira in the first and last race and also saddling up the well fancied winner Tumanako in the third race. Other locals to salute were veteran trainer John Leek, who lives in Nar Nar Goon and trains out of Cranbourne, with Replay and new president of the Pakenham Trainers Association Michael Huglin with Denero. The first winner, Purvies Princess, was the most celebrated, given the emotional attachment of a number of prominent local owners. The syndicate was put together by wellknown Pakenham Football Club identity Ray ‘Ashes’ O’Connor, who enlisted a group of friends to share the ownership, including his best mate John Dunn, who passed away recently. His share was taken over by wife Diane. Others include long-time barman at the Pakenham Hotel - known as Purvies, hence the name - Stan Young, Peter Visser, Chris and Sam Webster, Evan Broadbent, Brian Brady, Ian Murphy, Paddy Quinn and Bill Henning. Most of those were also involved with cult horse The Wingman, who finished third, fourth and fifth in three Pakenham Cups and, according to Ian, would have won the other he was scheduled to run in before breaking down. After the win of Purvies Princess, at her fourth race start, most of the group assembled in the mounting yard for a photo with their steed. Ashes was no-where to be seen. “I stayed up here to watch the race with Diane,” he explained later. On behalf of the club, committeeman Evan Broadbent congratulated his fellow owners on their success in winning the first race on Oaks Day. What a coup for the Officer Senior Football Club. Fresh off a strong 2019 season in the inaugural season of AFL Outer East’s Division 1 competition - which saw the Kangaroos reach a semi-final - the club has been bolstered by the signing of a big man sure to turn heads, and keep opposition sides on their toes. Returning from Thomastown after a twoyear stint in the Northern Football Netball League, star ruckman Dylan Chapman will once again don the Officer colours in a coup for the club and the competition, returning to the club he dominated for over a four-year period. In 2019, the big man turned in yet another impressive campaign for the Bears, making the Division 2 Team of the Year, and finishing fourth in the club best and fairest after being named in the best 11 times out of 16 games. Chapman’s resume in the south-east is extensive. During his time at the Kangaroos, the big man was named in the SEFNL’s Team of the Year in 2016, won the club best and fairest in 2016, and finished runner-up on two occasions. Now back at his beloved Starling Road ready to take the AFL Outer East on after taking on an opportunity at Thomastown to spend more time with family, Chapman is delighted to put pen to paper at the Kangaroos and get to work. “It’s a chance to come back and play with my mates again, I really missed it,” he said. “Ultimately I want some success in my football and I think Officer is on the verge of something special and I didn’t want to miss it. “I learnt a lot in my time away and I’m hoping to bring some of those experiences and that knowledge back to the club and impart that upon what is a relatively young playing group to help drive us forward.

Brettoner, in particular, had a big day in the Division 3 grand final by being named in the best. “We are happy to welcome a number of other recruits including Jack and Anthony Bernardo from South Belgrave,” he said. “Both are highly regarded, Bernardo will add some grunt to our engine room, whilst Brettoner is a mobile tall who can play at either end.” Star News understands that Officer is eyeing off further recruits as it looks to bolster its list further ahead of the 2020 season.
