Cranbourne’s Cup hope By sports editor Russell Bennett This is not a mirage - Cranbourne is set to have a runner in the 2019 Lexus Melbourne Cup. Mirage Dancer finished little over a length behind winner Mer De Glace to run third in the Caulfield Cup, and is now primed for a tilt at the race that stops the nation. The six-year-old is listed high on the third acceptances list. Now trained at Cranbourne by Trent Busuttin and Natalie Young, the former Sir Michael Stoute-trained son of Frankel impressed all with his Caulfield Cup run - his Australian debut. Prior to that, he had an 11-week let-up. Busuttin told the News that he was particularly pleased with Mirage Dancer's performance following his journey out from the UK. "He's an old campaigner that's been around the races a bit and he travelled over perfectly, and it was a trouble-free preparation," Busuttin said on the Caulfield Cup run. "You're always there to win, and there's nothing like winning - there's a big difference from winning to running third and you don't get the wider press or anything like that - but we had a trouble-free preparation, the horse travelled over beautifully, he didn't have an issue, and he went into the (Caulfield) Cup with no complaints and had a trouble-free run in the race, so he had every chance. "He went well, the owners were happy, and going forward he's a chance in the Cup - without getting carried away. He'll go there and perform well on the day." Clearly, Busuttin and Young are heading into the Melbourne Cup with Mirage Dancer with every confidence that he'll run well - despite the unknown of the 3200-metre distance. Cup day returns to Casey The Cranbourne Turf Club will be the place to be this Melbourne Cup Day, with the racecourse to host a meeting and major community event to celebrate the race that stops the nation. The club is looking forward to an actionpacked day with plenty of entertainment for all ages, as well as televising all the action from Flemington live on the big screen. A key highlight at this year's Melbourne Cup Day at Cranbourne is the return of the Heat Beads 'BBQ Turf Wars'. Patrons and barbecue enthusiasts will be able to watch 29 of the best competition teams strive for the most prestigious honour in barbecue, "The Melbourne BBQ Cup". There will be $7000 to be won in cash, prizes and trophies, sanctioned by the Kansas City BBQ Association. An exciting new addition on the day will be the running of the inaugural 'Golden Snag Competition'. As the name suggests, participants will be required to eat as many sausages as they can in three minutes. Those interested will be required to inbox the Cranbourne Turf Club Facebook Page a 30-second video explaining why they think they should participate. Ten lucky contenders will then be selected, where over $1000 worth of prizes will be up for grabs. There will also be a wide range of free kids' activities and entertainment on the day, including Dodgem Cars, pony rides and a jumping castle, just to name a few. Children of all ages look set to have a fantastic, fun-filled day. For the second year running, the Cranbourne Turf Club will also be running a Melbourne Cup sweep. By pre-purchasing a general admission ticket, patrons will go in the draw to be allocated one of this year's Lexus Melbourne Cup runners. The lucky patron who draws the Melbourne Cup winner will win a tiered dining table for six on a Friday night race meeting in 2020, valued at $450. 'Blue Sunday' will be entertaining the crowd with live music on the stage, playing from midday well into the afternoon. The meeting will be a full TAB meeting, where punters and racing enthusiasts can bet live on all races at Cranbourne.

Huge crowds turned out for some gasolinefuelled action as motorbikes roared into the streets of Cranbourne for the City of Casey biggest annual event. Thousands gathered to wave-off motorcyclists at the Cranbourne GP Run where riders headed en-mass from High Street to the Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix in Phillip Island on Saturday 26 October. The event featured market stalls, food and drink vans, workshops for kids, face painting, sausage sizzles and fire brigade displays. Sixteen year-old Ebony Portelli, who was the winner of Star Search for a Cause and Casey’s Got Talent 2018, sung the national anthem. For more turn to page eight.
Footy predator By Cam Lucadou-Wells A convicted paedophile “inveigled” his way into a South-East junior football club as a trusted sponsor and sexually assaulted a 12-year-old boy in 2008, the County Court of Victoria heard. Hugh Lean, 66, pleaded guilty to the indecent assault of a child - after initially denying the attack in the boy’s bedroom. He also pleaded guilty to four counts of breaching his sexual offender reporting obligations. Between 2012-’16 Lean failed to report to police that he was involved with the junior football club and that he was using the alias ‘Aaron Smith’.
In 2008, Lean donated $1500 a year to the club. Childless, he falsely told members that it was in tribute to his son who died in a car crash and had loved football. It gave him “special status” at the club, Judge Felicity Hampel said during sentencing on 28 October. The “considerable grooming” included Lean befriending and drinking with the victim’s father at the family home. On the night of the assault, Lean was invited to sleep on the children’s bedroom floor. The victim woke up that night in his bed - in a headlock and with Lean’s hand over his mouth, Judge Hampel noted.
Despite the boy’s resistance, Lean overpowered him and indecently assaulted him. Lean stopped only after another child got up to go to the toilet. That night, he threatened the victim not to tell anyone or he’d “come back for you”. Nine years later, the victim reported the incident to police. After the assault, the boy led a troubled, angry adolescence, stopped playing football and disengaged from school. He was unable to tell his parents for many years, the court heard. “My innocence was lost that night,” he stated to the court. At the time, Lean had already been jailed in
2002 for rape and indecent act with another 12-year-old boy. A psychologist in 2002 had assessed Lean as having no sexual interest in boys. In late 2008, Lean was placed on a 24-month CCO for soliciting a sexual service with a 14-year-old boy. Judge Hampel said Lean’s rehabilitation prospects were “guarded” despite his remorse, early guilty plea and no subsequent “contact” offences. He was jailed for up to six-and-a-half years with a four-and-a-half year non-parole period. Lean is required to report as a sexual offender for life.

How long have you been a part of the Berwick RSL Sub-branch? I joined the sub branch in 2012. I was elected to the committee in 2016 and elected as vicepresident in 2019. What is the sub-branch's primary aim? Primary aim is to provide welfare assistance to veterans and their families and sub branch members. What are some of the important services the sub-branch provides to the community every year? The two main community services provided during the year are Anzac Day and Remembrance Day Services. In addition we as required, do visits to school, aged care and nursing homes. What's your favourite holiday spot in Australia? Tasmania.

While this is Cr Serey's first term as mayor, she has served as a City of Casey councillor for the Edrington Ward for seven years. She has previously served as deputy mayor.

Community service has long been a priority for Cr Serey, who has volunteered at the St Vincent de Paul Society. In accepting her position, she said she would give some special focus to youth in Casey during her time as mayor.

New mayor at helm By Brendan Rees Casey councillor Susan Serey has become City of Casey's youngest mayor. As the newly elected mayor, the 29-year-old has pledged to keep rates down and "focusing on the issues that matter". Cr Serey was voted in during a special council meeting on Tuesday 29 October. She will serve as mayor from 2019 to 2020. The Edrington Ward councillor of seven years said she was humbled to take the reins and was excited for the year ahead. "No doubt, I will learn a lot more this year, but you can be assured that I will work hard, focus on achieving practical outcomes and foster a strong teamwork so that we can continue delivering for our residents and ratepayers of today, while continuing our work towards creating Australia's most liveable city for tomorrow," she said. Cr Serey, who unsuccessfully ran as a Liberal candidate for the seat of Narre Warren South at the 2018 state election, said she her priorities would be a focus on young people and their families, making Casey a safe and inclusive community, improving transport, boosting the economy, making Casey the most liveable city and "creating a sense of place in our communities" "As the city's youngest mayor, it is beholden upon me to give some special focus to Casey's youth, making sure that our young people have the opportunities needed to grow and develop into healthy, positive, and productive citizens," Cr Serey said. "Issues affecting our young people and their families today and, in the future, will continue to be at the forefront of my decision making. "I am a practical person committed to achieving practical outcomes which can make the lives of our City of Casey residents easier, more productive, more rewarding and more enjoyable." She thanked outgoing mayor Amanda Stapledon for "her hard work and making people with disabilities special focus in her community work" and hoped to continue in her footsteps. Cr Flannery was a former member of the Casey Residents and Ratepayers Association, while Cr Rowe, a former police officer, was the Liberal MP for Cranbourne from 1992 to 2002 before being elected to Casey Council in 2012. In accepting her new position as mayor, Cr Serey thanked those who have provided
mentorship and support during her time on council, in particular her fellow ward councillor Tim Jackson and former Casey mayor Mick Morland. Born to Chilean parents, Cr Serey said she understood the "hardships and aspirations of newer arrivals and multicultural communities". "We are indeed very lucky to have the opportunity to live and build new lives in this great country of ours of which I hope our community will continue being very proud," she said.

Two people have been taken to hospital following a crash in Blind Bight on Sunday 27 October. Casey Highway Patrol attended the scene where it's believed a car failed to give way on Warneet Road at Blind Bight Road about 7.20pm. Ambulance Victoria said paramedics treated a man aged in his teens who has leg injuries. He was flown by air ambulance helicopter to Royal Melbourne Hospital in a stable condition. A pre-school aged boy was treated for minor injuries. He was taken to Monash Medical Centre in a stable condition. Police are investigating. Man arrested following carjacking
Diwali festival shines bright at Bunjil One of the biggest Indian festivals of the year was celebrated at Bunjil Place on Saturday 26 October. Hundreds gathered for Diwali, known as Hindu's Festival of Lights, which featured all the colour and sounds of India. The evening was bustling with vendors serving a wide variety of cuisines, while crowds also had the chance to dance to some classical and Bollywood beats. There were also various workshops including yoga, art, cricket, cultural stage performances, rides and more. The night sky lit up with a magical fireworks display to cap off the day.
Teenager airlifted to hospital
A knife-wielding man who allegedly tried to steal a car in the carpark of Casey Hospital on Wednesday 23 October has been arrested. Police say a 55-year-old woman was sitting in her car near the entrance to the hospital's emergency department when the man allegedly got into the passenger seat just after 5.30pm. The man allegedly produced a knife and demanded that the driver get out of her car. The woman attempted to grab the keys from the ignition and as she did, the man pushed her from the car, police say. The victim fell to the ground, fracturing her shoulder, while the man drove away in her Mazda sedan. Police arrested the 44-year-old man of no fixed address, in Wantirna South earlier Thursday 24 October. Casey Crime Investigation Unit detectives charged with aggravated carjacking, recklessly cause serious injury and theft of motor car. He has been remanded to appear at the Melbourne Magistrate's Court on Friday 25 October.
Vehicles damaged at station Six vehicles parked at Merinda Park train station have been found to have their windows smashed from Friday 18 October to Saturday 19 October. Damage included broken windscreen, slashed tyres and scratches to panels. Police believe it occurred late evening or early morning. Police are seeking any witnesses to the damage or suspicious loitering in the area at the station in Cranbourne North. During the attack Mr O'Toole, who suffered from Parkinson's Disease, came out from the workshop to defend his wife and began wrestling with the assailant. "We were just trying to fight him off ... Dermot was desperately trying to save me." "Dermot fell over, he tripped over and he turned on him and stabbed him to death," she said. Mrs O'Toole attempted to pull the offender away from her husband and in doing so she was

The robber, Gavin Perry, 27, was high after taking ice and on parole at the time of the murder. He was jailed for 27 years in 2014 for the crime. Mrs O'Toole remembers her husband of 41 years as a wonderful man who was a funny, kind and loyal man."I had the best husband and we had a great life together," she said. "Life has just been horrible since."

Catering for the eighth-fasting growing municipality in the country, Casey Hospital’s much needed $135 million redevelopment is nearing completion, with external signage being installed on the new tower. Once complete, the full expansion will allow an extra 25,800 patients to be treated annually through an extra 8000 surgeries and procedures while also supporting an extra 1300 births. The redevelopment will consist of 128 new inpatient beds as well as the hospital’s first intensive care unit in the tower, meaning critically ill patients presented to the emergency department won’t have to be sent to other hospitals. Six new operating theatres, a new day surgery unit, an upgraded pharmacy, back-ofhouse areas and expanded parking facilities are also included in the expansion. Minister for Health Jenny Mikakos visited the site to view the signage and tour recently completed patient recovery areas within the new tower. “Casey Hospital looks after one of our most rapidly-growing communities and this massive expansion will ensure they have the facilities they need to continue providing the best possible care,” Ms Mikakos said. “The hospital will be able to treat critically ill patients on site, undertake more surgeries and procedures and support thousands more births - which are services we know this community needs.” Member for Narre Warren South Gary Maas said the redevelopment was part of a larger plan to provide healthcare to the booming outer suburbs. “This is all part of our plan to ensure those living in Melbourne’s south-eastern suburbs have access to world-class healthcare now and into the future,” he said.

Casey set to dump plastic
A Berwick woman has told of her shock after thugs hurled a milk carton at her car, shattering the windscreen. Barb Davies was travelling along Cresthaven Boulevard in Berwick when her windscreen was struck by the object at 12.53pm on Friday 25 October. "I didn't even see it flying in the air to be honest, it happened that quickly," she said. "It just completely shattered my windscreen and glass all over the dash." Ms Davies was on her way to an appointment, driving just under 50km/h, when the incident occurred. She said she pulled over straight away and was helped by bystanders who found the one litre milk carton about 10 metres down the road "completely ripped apart". "One picked up the item off the road because they questioned 'What's happened? What's happened?' "I just ended up on the side of the road shaking like leaf. "I had to pull myself together and sort of work out what was going on ... I rang my husband and he came and calmed me down," she said. Luckily Ms Davies was not injured and is thankful the cartoon didn't go through her windscreen. She hopes to have her car repaired later this week but will be "out of my pocket unfortunately." Ms Davies, who posted dash cam footage of the incident on Facebook in the hope to find the culprits, said she was quite upset with the amount of "nasty" messages she had received from strangers about the cost of repair. "It's really frustrating me. The quote alone was $1,400; that's not even the towing," she said.
Lightweight plastic shopping bags will be a thing of the past in the City of Casey when the State Government's plastic bag ban comes into effect this November. From Friday 1 November, it will be illegal for retailers in Victoria to supply lightweight plastic shopping bags including degradable, biodegradable and compostable bags. Casey Council is encouraging all retailers to cease plastic bags and for shoppers to get into good bag-habits early by remembering to grab their reusable bags before they leave the house. The community is highly supportive of the upcoming state-wide ban with more than three quarters of residents already bringing reusable bags with them. Casey mayor Amanda Stapledon said retailers across Casey and Victoria had already chosen not to offer plastic bags. "We have seen many retailers as well as shoppers already getting into great habits by using other resources such as empty cardboard boxes, paper bags, cloth, jute or hessian bags instead of plastic bags," she said. "Considering the impact of plastic pollution and the long term effects it has on the environment, the state-wide ban is the first step toward reducing plastic pollution in our environment and protecting the wildlife of Casey and Victoria." Although Victoria has relatively low litter rates, litter from lightweight plastic bags still poses a problem in our community and is the main source of litter Australia wide. By the end of 2019, all states and territories across Australia, except NSW, will have banned lightweight plastic shopping bags. Produce bags used for unpackaged foods such as fruit, meat, seafood or bread; garbage bags and bin-liners; dog waste bags will still be acceptable.

Reading the news 24-10-19 the report by Mr David Atkins about heavy traffic on High Street, Cranbourne, I have lived in Hampton Park longer than Mr Atkins in Cranbourne. The Cranbourne bypass was on the planning table back in the late 1980s and early 1990s but it never got don. Houses were more important. The council get rates but they can't get rates from a bypass. IBAC to hear Casey corruption claims The state's anti-corruption watchdog will hold public hearings as a part of its investigation of planning and property development decisions at Casey Council. The hearings are part of an IBAC investigation Operation Sandon into allegations of "serious corrupt conduct" into councillors and property developers in Casey. IBAC Commissioner Robert Redlich QC will preside over the hearings. He said the hearings will consider whether "public officers" involved in planning decisions were improperly influenced by donations, gifts, pro bono services or "other hospitality" "These public hearings will examine the transparency and integrity of planning and property development decisions, and whether
lobbyists or planning consultants have had undue influence over state and local government planning and property development decisions," Commissioner Redlich said. "More broadly, they will consider whether current systems and controls in place are sufficient to ensure the integrity of the planning process, and if serious corrupt conduct is identified, how organisational culture and practices may have fostered that conduct or prevented it from being detected and stopped." City of Casey has released a statement saying: "We are aware of the investigation and are cooperating fully with IBAC. Given this is an ongoing matter, we will not speculate or make any further comment at this point in time." Casey Residents and Ratepayers Associa-
tion spokesman Brendan Browne said the association welcomed the news IBAC would hold public hearings into allegations of corruption at Casey Council. "For years we have had concerns about how conflicts of interests are managed at a local government level and the lack of transparency that often exists," he said. "Without wishing to pre-emptively pass judgement on the City of Casey, we feel confident that shining a spotlight on their planning and development decisions can only be a good thing. Without IBAC and other investigative bodies, it is all too easy for local Government to avoid serious scrutiny. "We look forward to any recommendations IBAC may make," Mr Browne said.
Safety in mind in grants boost for Casey Four public precincts in Casey have been revitalised with new lighting, improved public amenities and better accessibility routes. Minister for Crime Prevention Ben Carroll today toured sites in Cranbourne, Cranbourne East, Berwick and Endeavour Hills, which have benefited from more than $420,000 worth of Public Safety Infrastructure Fund grants. Mr Carroll joined Casey mayor Amanda Stapledon and Cranbourne MP Pauline Richards in visiting the Camms Road Shopping Precinct in Cranbourne on Thursday 24 October to mark the project completions and to announce additional funding of $120,000 for the City of Casey as part of the latest 2019-20
Public Safety Infrastructure grants round. The Camms Road Shopping Precinct received a range of upgrades including new footpaths, seating, signage, rubbish bins and bicycle racks, with the improved amenities encouraging better use of the area and deterring anti-social behaviour. The redesign follows concerns around public safety and anti-social behaviour raised by local business owners. Buchanan Skate Park in Berwick received five new lights in and around the skate park to enhance safety for people using the park at night. Charles Green Reserve Car Park in Endeav-
our Hills also received increased lighting and signage, improving accessibility and safety for residents accessing the nearby senior citizens' and sporting clubs. The additional lights and improved footpaths around the car park will enhance the safety and confidence of pedestrians and members accessing the reserve in the evenings. The Casey Recreation and Aquatic Centre and Stadium Complexes in Cranbourne East has seen the installation of 33 solar lights and 68 bollards to support safer movement and restrict vehicle access from pedestrian zones.
Firefighters lend a hand By Brendan Rees Two volunteer firefighters from Clyde CFA fire brigade travelled to New South Wales in an effort to help fight the Busbys Flat fire. Andrew Strang and Andrew Palmer joined a Victorian contingent of 21 firefighters after flying out from Melbourne Airport on Friday 25 October for a five-day deployment. With several large bushfires raging across NSW, Victorian firefighters were requested to assist with the fire activity in and around Busbys Flat, about five hours north of Port Macquarie, which has burnt more than 50,000 hectares and destroyed homes. Mr Strang has been involved in a number of bushfires during his four years experience as a volunteer while it was the first for Mr Palmer to encounter a bushfire in NSW after completing wildfire training last year. Fortunately the duo has work rest days which didn't impact on their employers, who would have granted special leave anyway as both support the CFA. Clyde CFA captain Milligan ensured there were enough volunteers at the brigade to answer any calls before approving the deployment. Neither member was injured during their deployment. CFA chief executive officer and chief officer Steve Warrington said crews will work hard to support our partner agencies in NSW during this challenging time. "These devastating fires have seen properties lost and communities under threat so we are pleased to share these resources and much needed support with our interstate colleagues," Mr Warrington said.

Spectacle roars into town By Brendan Rees Dark clouds may have threatened as thousands of motorbikes descended on High Street in Cranbourne but it didn't dampen the spirits of riders or those cheering them on. Crowds gathered in droves as motorbikes laden with chrome and leather waved goodbye as they headed en-mass to the Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix on Saturday 26 October. There were high-fives, grid women walking on stilts, outstretched arms from the crowd taking photos, chequered flags, and flashing lights from Casey Highway Patrol motorbikes as they escorted the riders. The event, hailed one of Casey's biggest events, also featured market stalls, food and drink vans, workshops for kids, face painting, sausage sizzles and fire brigade displays. Casey Radio also broadcast a live-to-air coverage of the event while sixteen year-old Ebony Portelli, who was the winner of Star Search for a Cause and Casey's Got Talent 2018, sung the national anthem. For the first time this year, a lucky member of the public was chosen to go up in the cherry picker with the Casey mayor to help wave off the riders. That special person was Vanessa Ferriman who was the winner of a Facebook competition to determine the waver. However, Ms Ferriman decided to give the once-in-a-lifetime prize to her brother Steve Ferriman as a gift. He followed in the footsteps of legends like Cathy Freeman, Arj Barker, Leisel Jones and Shane Jacobson for the experience. Casey mayor Amanda Stapledon described the day as incredible and thanked the weather gods for not spoiling the party. "The number of bikes and the crowd was heartening to see and confirmed that no matter the weather, this is an event well worthwhile, and so beneficial to both the City of Casey families and bike enthusiasts," she said. "It was a privilege to be in the cherry picker with the competition winner and avid motorcyclist, Steve Ferriman; a Cranbourne resident who rides in the wave-off each year." Volunteers from the Casey Cardinia Foundation were also out in force rattling tins and encouraging visitors to donate. All money raised goes towards not-for-profit charities and organisations that directly impact areas including disability, older persons, disadvantage, crisis and youth within the region.

Magpie Army’s ‘Joffa’ opens up about tough childhood By Brendan Rees He's the well-known Collingwood cheer squad supporter every rival footy fan loves to hate. But there's so much more to Jeff "Joffa" Corfe, the larrikin who became famous for his iconic gold jacket. He opened up about his rocky childhood after speaking to members of the Rotary Club of Narre Warren at Fountain Gate Hotel on Wednesday 23 October. Joffa's father was a drunk and his mother, who suffered from mental illness, was a violent and "nasty" woman. Joffa, one of four boys and three girls, remembers his mother picking up an old kerosene heater and throwing it against the wall in an attempt to light the house on fire. "We were lucky to get out alive," he recalls. His mother, who was a Collingwood supporter, would often blame her children if her team lost. "There would either be a cold bowl of soup or a hunk of tripe (stomach lining of farm animals)," Joffa says. At five, Joffa was sent to Allambie boys' home in Burwood after his mother was sent to a psychiatric hospital. He found comfort with another homeless youth as they agreed to "look after each other" until he took his own life at 16-years of age. Joffa lied about his age when he went for a job at a plastics factory before moving into a boarding house that reeked of urine and faeces. He continued to watch Collingwood play at Victoria Park which he says "quickly became a home for me". Joffa rose to fame when he began wearing his gold jacket during footy games in 2002. For the past 19 years Joffa has helped the homeless as a welfare worker with the Salvation Army, and is also an advocate for epilepsy awareness as his daughter lives with the neurological condition. Today, to the surprise of many, Joffa says he will be moving to Fiji next year and won't be attending any more footy games. "I've been to many Grand Finals, I've seen two premierships - I should've seen three, magnificent crowds on Anzac Day, weekends, what else is there for me to see? ... When you barrack for Collingwood you see it all," he laughs. Joffa's story is featured in his new book, Joffa: Isn't that life? He's sold just over 4000 copies and all money raised from sales goes towards the Epilepsy Foundation. At the end of his presentation, Rotary Club of Narre Warren presented Joffa with a $500 donation for the Epilepsy Foundation.

A Casey resident has described the moment a driver "hurtled" towards her after an alleged stolen car wound its way through Hampton Park on Monday 1 April. Robin Dzedins of Lynbrook said she was turning left into Camms Road from South Gippsland Highway about 2.30pm when she saw a car "swerving like a maniac." It came as police were led on a two-hour wild pursuit which began about 12.30pm after a four-wheel-drive was allegedly stolen from Cranbourne. The vehicle was later set alight, police say, before the speedsters fled in a station wagon and later hijacked a ute in Hampton Park. The ute crashed where police say the driver was seen getting out carrying a rifle, which was used to carjack a Ford ute in Carrum Downs. Maxwell prevails in China By Nick Creely For Cranbourne pro triathlete Levi Maxwell, this latest win won’t be forgotten in a hurry. The gruelling nature of it, the 12-hour live TV broadcast, and the eyes in the crowd fixed firmly on his next move. But in the first full distance triathlon in mainland China on 20 October, Maxwell once again triumphed in an extraordinary performance to stream clear with a time of 8:08:41 - a shade under nine minutes clear of the next best athlete. In an international field sprinkled with Aussies, British, Dutch, German, American and French athletes, Maxwell enjoyed a strong swim to start to record the fourth fastest swim in 48 minutes, before entering into the bike course, which is four laps in total. Riding the 180 kilometres in four hours and 30 minutes - which was the second fastest of the day - Maxwell kept in touch, and ready to pounce. In the run, the Cranbourne champion then flourished, making his move at the 25 kilometre mark at an uphill section, surging clear up the hill to open up the race-winning gap. Incredibly, Maxwell ran at a pace of 3.55 minutes per kilometre, as well as travelling at an average speed of 40 kilometres per hour on the bike. Maxwell told the Star News that the final push, one that led to his impending victory over another fellow Aussie, Steven McKenna, was extremely difficult, but was proud that he could stream clear to win comfortably after a gruelling challenge all day. “The weather is slightly warmer than here in Victoria. But it was still quite chilly first thing in the morning and I remember thinking in the first 30 minutes of the bike that it’s cold,” he said. “However, towards the end of the race, it was sunny and mid to high 20s which feels pretty warm. “Those last 10 kilometres of the run hurt a lot. “But with the win in my grasp, I knew I had to endure the pain, and push to the line. At approximately the 41 kilometre mark there was an ‘obstacle’ which was a set of stairs to get you over the bike course and to the finish line. “I knew once I made it over these, and didn’t 20 STAR NEWS

The run was where Maxwell stamped his authority to storm to a comfortable win. fall over on them that the race was mine and I could relax and soak it up.” But that the pain of getting to the finish line was worth every second of the eight hour journey - it was an emotion-filled moment that he’ll never forget for a variety of reasons. “This race win means a lot to me. At a personal level it’s validation that I can produce a world-class time at the full distance, and potentially have a future in the sport,” he said. “I am also proud to produce a win for the people and sponsors who support me. Their hope, time, belief and support now aren’t wasted. “It’s extra special as one of my first sponsors, a bike shop owner by the name of Anthony Moustakas from CBD Cycles had passed away two weeks before the race. So to win and be able to dedicate the win to him, was very emotional and makes it extra special.” In the immediate aftermath, Maxwell described the chaotic scenes of the crowd and the well-wishes from people he didn’t know. “It’s the biggest endorphin rush,” he said. “You cross the line after battling for eight hours and hear the crowd going nuts and the commentator calls out that you’re the cham-
pion. “It’s the best feeling in the world, but this race was another level. The crowd was massive, thousands in the arena, and then ones who had access, swamped you wanting photos and autographs. “After 15 minutes or so of this the Challenge athlete liaison Belinda Granger came and saved me and took me to the quiet of the athlete recovery zone. “It’s here in the quiet that the pain hit me, and the realisation that I had won. “I then read a message from my partner saying how proud she was and I was flooded with thoughts of everyone who has made the dream possible, filling me with pride and emotion.” As a result of the win, Maxwell has snuck into the top five world bonus ranking for the Challenge series, and was full of praise for what the Challenge community has been able to provide not only himself, but his fellow athletes. “Challenge Family has made an effort to fill a void in the triathlon community by listening to what athletes want, and delivering it,“ he explained.
I really like Challenge family as they make it all about the athlete, providing great experiences through their events. They also value what the professional athletes bring to the sport, and have taken measures to ensure the race is fair for the athletes by, introducing a 20 metre draft rule during the bike leg. “Other series are only 12 metres, which in bigger fields provides a significant advantage to the faster swimmers, who come out the water together. I strongly recommend athletes choose Challenge events for the best experience, and value.“Now back in Australia, Maxwell is just looking to recover after putting his body through the rigours. “The delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) after an event like this is excruciating,” he said. “The first 24 hours is not so bad, as you still have adrenalin and the high of a win masking it. But it usually hits you bad 48 hours later, and can last for a couple weeks. “To then jump on a bus, two planes, and then your car with a total of 20 hours of travel the morning after the race, adds some extra sting. “You have to be very mindful of hydration and deep vein thrombosis (DVT) risk. So I try to drink a lot and move around plenty, as well as use my 2XU compression tights to lower the risks and help aid recovery. “I had two days off after the race mainly due to travel. I did a light walk jog session for six kilometres on Thursday, which was still very rough. “I’ll likely take another easier week and slowly add some volume, before trying to ramp up the training again. The full distance Triathlon takes a huge toll on you mentally and physically. And I’ve made the mistake in the past, rushing back into things too quickly, and ending up sick or injured.” As Maxwell looks to gear up for another successful home season and potentially another Challenge series race overseas he thanked his sponsors, Anker Concrete, 2XU Australia, Giant Bikes Australia, Highview Accounting and Financial, Pro4mance Endurance Sports Nutrition, Casey Cycles and Giant Ormond for their support. Students of Hope Australia Soccer Academy (HASA) in Casey-Cardinia have created history by breaking a Guinness World Record. About 25 HASA students - plus their families, mostly from Cranbourne North, Narre Warren South and Pakenham - were part of an attempt to set a new world record for the world's largest soccer lesson last Saturday. The attempt involved a 30-minute soccer lesson guided by former Socceroo Kevin Muscat, Matildas striker Kyah Simon and Brazilian soccer stars who are part of Tour of Hope (TOH), a non-profit event that is conducting soccer clinics in Casey-Cardinia this week. A total of 835 participants from children to grandparents were verified for the official count by a Guinness World Record adjudicator. The result beat Poland's record in April 2018 of 705 participants. Organised by Woodlea Estate, the attempt was threatened by thunderstorms which sent everyone indoors for about 10 minutes before the countdown could start. "It was a fun day but cold," said HASA participant Safora Rezai, 13, about the blustery conditions. "But it was good to be part of a historymaking event and it was important for me to be there with my HASA team mates". Her fellow HASA mates agreed. "I was really happy and proud of all of us," said 12-year-old Hasina Rezai. "It feels great to be part of a Guinness World Record and be one of those people who achieved something historic." "The lessons were kinda hard though," Fereshta Rezaie,10, said. "But the best part of the day was when the countdown finished and they announced that we broke the World Record," she continued. NARRE WARREN BOWLS It was a great start to the pennant week for Narre Warren, with all three teams winning. Division 2, at Berwick had one rink win, one draw and one loss. Eric Sydenham, Geoff Ampt, Wally Finlayson and Jim Millar allowed their opponents only four ends on their way to a 26-7 win. Alan Mark, Reg Young, Joe Selfridge and Colin Groom came from behind midgame to draw 21-21, but Keith Mark, Wilma Haringsma, Reg Johnstone and Wilma Stevenson went down 10-23. Narre Warren (1) 13-57 defeated Berwick (2) 3-51. Division 4 was at home at Fountain Gate against Edithvale and also won well. Stan Bulmer, Peter Wilson, Brian Nicholls and Glen Cadman led the scoring (29-9) while Len O'Brien, Nancy Pugh, Gary Wilson and Geoff Miller won 18-14. Les Clement, Pauline Kempf, Joe McGuire and Peter Groom drew 17-17. Narre Warren (2) 15-64 defeated Edithvale (2) 1-40. Division 6 (a side) won its fourth game in a row with a good win over Clayton at Foauntain Gate. Susan Ellery, Truus Henneman and Judy Naughton were the team of the day with a 36-6 win, while Jeanette Cox, Janice Moran and Enid Gibb, went down 18-28. Narre Warren (3) 12-54 defeated Clayton (2) 2-34. Saturday's Pennant had almost everything: gusty winds all day, intermittent rain and sun, a hail storm and thunder, but thankfully no lightning. On the bowing side, Narre Warren had three from four teams win, huge winning margins, and even a full eight count. At Fountain Gate, Division 3 hosted Cardinia Waters, and had a win. The scoring was led by Eric Sydenham, Wally Finlayson, Colin Groom and Jim Millar (24-10) and assisted by Geoff Ampt, Mark Groom, Peter Lister and Cam Lee (21-16) and Graham Dodd, Joe Selfridge, Jim Kempf and Percy Herath also won 26-22. Nanopoulos snags seven By Nick Creely VICTORIAN PREMIER CRICKET ROUND 5 Although James Nanopoulos ran riot with the ball against a star-studded Geelong side, Dandenong still faces an uphill battle to claim victory on Saturday. With seemingly-perilous overhead conditions unavoidable and a wicket that, in recent times, has misbehaved, returning skipper Tom Donnell won the toss and sent the Cats in. It took only two Jakeb Thomas deliveries for the decision to pay off with the big quick sending Geelong's opener Mitch Reid back to the shed inside the first over of the day. But it was the elegance and experience of James Nanopoulos who did the brunt of the damage from then on. Nanopoulos claimed two wickets in the space of three balls to change the game early on and move the Cats to 3/19 - his figures at that stage, 2/2 from five. With Eamonn Vines dead-batting everything at one end, gloveman Josh McDonald opted to fight fire with fire by going after the likes of Peter Cassidy in an attempt to shift momentum. When Vines was trapped in front LBW, Nanopoulos had three and seemed impossible for the batsman to score from, let alone survive. All concerns of the threat of the Dandenong bowling attack washed away with the quick claiming 7/43 from 15.5 overs and assisting heavily in bundling the Cats out for 155. The wicket looked an extremely difficult batting deck and it was proven in the Panthers' reply, when Brett Forsyth was the early wicket. The Dales finished the 54th over at 8/118, avoiding an outright loss. VICTORIAN SUB-DISTRICT - EAST/WEST ROUND 2 Endeavour Hills suffered a heartbreaking loss at the hands of Altona. The Hills posted 9/274 last week, but were chased down in the final over by Altona who finished 6/275. Altona was in some early trouble at 2/35 but strong half-centuries to Greg Sheehan (69) and James Grubb (92 not out) guided the home side to victory. Hemantha Jayasundera was the pick of the bowlers for the Hills with 3/75 from 26 overs. WOMENS PREMIER CRICKET ROUNDS 7 AND 8 Dandenong went 0-2 on the weekend when the Panthers took on the powerful Ringwood side. The Panthers were sent in to kick off proceedings in the first match and posted a solid 6/106, Tiana Atkinson the pick of the batsman with 18 at the top of the order. In reply, Rams skipper Bhavisha Devchand carried the innings home with a stirring unbeaten 52, as her side chased down the total in the 18th over. The following fixture had Ringwood setting this time and after Dandenong superstar Emma Gallagher had 3/11, the Panthers were in the box seat needing 99 for victory. But the Panthers fell nine runs short, finishing 9/99 at the end of its innings - Gallagher again leading the way with 27.
Softball shines through the gloom of the miserable skies The weekend's Casey Softball Association round started under particularly windy and showery conditions, testing players and spectators. First up was the Mixed Under-15 competition. Doveton played Cobras Grey in an entertaining contest that saw the Cobras win 16-10. Berwick and Cobras Maroon also played out a high-scoring game with Cobras also winning 17-11. The Mixed Under-13s were up next. Unfortunately Berwick had to forfeit, which gave Royal Falcons their first win 7-0. Doveton
came up against the Cobras with the Cobras winning 7-0. In a fantastic sign, a number of new, enthusiastic kids are playing this season, with their coaches doing a tremendous job in leading them. The Social Ladies took to the diamonds next in what turned out to be the best conditions of the day - strong winds, but no rain. Berwick Geronimo played Doveton in a very close game with Geronimo emerging 7-5 winners. Cranbourne Comets also played out a close one with the Comets victors 9-6.
Berwick Chickasaw started well against Narre Warren Penguins, who came home strong to beat Chickasaw 18-10. The MVPs were too strong for Chiefs with a comfortable 9-0 win. Ladies Open 2 played in the worst conditions of the day, having everything thrown them. They came off the field twice due to lightning and heavy rain. Only one game was completed with Berwick Cheyenne going down to Young Guns 9-3.
Sadly, Mother Nature had the last laugh, and for the second week running the Open Women's 1 and Men's games were washed out. There are no games this weekend with the Melbourne Cup Day long weekend. The association is hoping for better playing conditions when it returns on 9 November. The Swans put to the test By Nick Creely Casey-South Melbourne has its collective back to the wall against a star-studded Carlton team after a a day with several rain delays in Victorian Premier Cricket. With play unable to get underway until 12.15pm due to a ferocious late morning shower, Blues skipper Evan Gulbis had little hesitation in sending the Swans into bat, with his supreme bowling outfit ready to unleash. Luke Wells and Devin Pollock strolled to the middle to face a bowling trio consisting of quicks Cam Stevenson, Evan Gulbis and Xavier Crone, who have a combined 29 First Class matches between them, with Crone making his Victorian debut just a week ago, and showing some impressive signs as a seamer. Stevenson got the ball to talk early, snicking off Pollock to keeper Brayden Stepien, but Wells - and his experienced vice-captain Nathan Freitag - dug deep to guide the home side to lunch at 1/37 in a rain-marred session, and with a platform to launch after the break. With spits and spurts of heavy rain making life difficult, Freitag looked assured after the break, particularly in driving through the covers off an electric bowling outfit that attacked the stumps and really looked to test the strengths of the left-handed Swan.
