GUMBUYA MAKES A SPLASH AS Gumbuya World is the 2019 Casey Cardinia Business of the Year. CEO Ron Weinzierl accepted the award on behalf of his team at the gala dinner held at the Cranbourne Racecourse on Friday night 18 October. He thanked the judges and said it was exciting to think where Gumbuya may go in the future. Stage two of the hugly popular tourist park is expected to open on Melbourne Cup Weekend, further cementing its reputation as one of Victoria’s premier tourist destinations. “In our second year we are only just getting started,“ Mr Weinzierl said. He congratuled the other winners and said the owners of Gumbuya were pleased to be operating in such a collaborative region. “Together we can achieve amazing things.“ Ealier in the evening Gumbuya won the award for Tourism and Travel. Gumbuya World boasts a state-ofthe-art Wildlife Trail allowing visitors to experince more than 50 species of Australian wildlife. Oasis Springs has 12 thrilling water experiences and Outback Explorer offers 11 exciting rides for all ages. “Whether it’s spending endless hours in the water park, getting up-close and personal with wildlife, enjoying the rides and attractions or attending one of our many events, Gumbuya World has something for everyone,“ Mr Weinzierl said. This year Gumbuya has undergone a major expansion as stage two takes shape.

As part of stage two Oasis Springs, the theme park’s water world, will almost double in size. In addition to the new family wave pool, visitors will enjoy six brand new gigantic waterslides comprising two monster twister slides and thrilling four-lane rally race slides. The expansion is part of a major redevelopment of Gumbuya World set to continue over the next three years. When completed the theme park will offer 50 new attractions as well as

a range of onsite accommodation, new cafes, shops, a chocolate factory and a microbrewery. It will also include Indigenous, dinosaur and woolshed precincts for educational programs. By 2022, it is anticipated that Gumbuya World will attract a million visitors each year from around Australia and the globe – ensuring tourism remains strong in Victoria and the Casey-Cardinia region. The judge was blown away by the

FIRM’S FAMILY VALUES WIN OUT The family-orientated culture of Nobelius Land Surveyors impressed the judges of this year’s Casey Cardinia Business Awards. A CUT ABOVE THE COMPETITION New York Barbers is a slice of the Big Apple in the heart of Berwick. The business was established in 2014 by owner Mario Fallace to provide a quality men’s grooming service in the South East suburbs and Casey region. The state-of-the-art barber shop was inspired by the traditional, old school New York barber shops and the famous city itself. Under Mario’s watchful eye, the team of barbers service all gentleman providing haircuts, beard trims and shaves. Mario’s love for the Big Apple is evident in the carefully curated space which includes arresting photographs of iconic New York landscapes. One corner of the barbers is devoted

to the history of the craft with framed antique cut throat razors and a centuryold barber’s chair. Mario describes New York Barbers as an “old school barber shop with a modern fusion". “When I decided originally to open a barbers it would have been very easy to paint a white wall and put in chairs and mirrors and call it a barbers shop,“ explained Mario. “But I got to thinking about barbering and how big it was in the 1920s through to the 1960s in New York. At that time there was a barber on every corner. That’s why I wanted to have a New York inspired feel and hence why we became the New York Barbers." Customers and those waiting with

them can also indulge in a coffee, frappe, milkshake, cup of tea, soft drink or hot chocolate from the cafe. Mario says his team of barbers are like family. “The team is awesome. They are well experienced in all aspects of barbering from close shaves, to modern fades. It’s about looking after men. “I am really proud of my team because that is exactly what they do. A car, which smashed into a home in Narre Warren, left extensive damage.

A car became airborne and plummeted into a front bedroom of a home in Narre Warren on Wednesday 16 October. The incident, which occurred at the corner of Sinners Ave and Kurrajong Rd at 3.30pm, left the house extensively damaged. Narre Warren State Emergency Service, police, ambulance, and firefighters from Hallam CFA attended the scene. An SES spokeswoman said it's believed the elderly woman driver lost control of her Volkswagen Golf after a bag became stuck under her brake pedal. SES volunteers installed acrow props to hold up the house's structure in place as well tarping the damaged room. Amubulance Victoria spokesman Jamie First said paramedics treated a person although they were not taken to hospital. In a separate incident three days earlier, a young couple woke in shock when a car ploughed into their Berwick home.

Bashed for ‘debt’ The dental repair bill was at least $6800, the court heard. Yazdani, sporting a significantly swollen and bruised right hand, was interviewed by police via an interpreter the next day. Defence lawyer Siva Kandasamy told the court that Yazdani was provoked, unarmed and struck the victim only once. Yazdani had been working for the boss for four months and was constantly met with "excuses" over not being paid. He had earlier approached police for help but was told it was a civil dispute - and he was unlikely to succeed due to being a sub-contractor, Mr Kandasamy said.

"He doesn't know how to manage stress and that's a contributing factor," Mr Kandasamy said. A 21-year-old hired painter has pleaded guilty to brutally bashing his employer into unconsciousness during a dispute over unpaid wages, a court has heard. Rahmatulla Yazdani, without invitation, knocked on the front door of his boss's family home in Lynbrook on a Saturday afternoon in August. The pair argued outside the house over the alleged $1100 non-payment, with the boss pushing Yazdani in the chest and challenging him to fight, Dandenong Magistrates' Court was told on 22 October.

Yazdani struck the boss to the forehead with an unknown object, then repeatedly punched the victim to the head, police alleged. He continued hitting even as the boss lay on the ground unconscious, police told the court. When finished, Yazdani flicked his cigarette to the ground, and was driven away in a waiting car. An ambulance was called by a witness. The victim was transported to Dandenong Hospital slipping in and out of consciousness. He suffered a deep laceration and fracture to his brow, a laceration to the bridge of his nose that required stitches as well as seven broken teeth.

Cost of councillors By Brendan Rees Casey councillors claimed $137,243 in ratepayer funded expenses in the past financial year - a 58 per cent increase in just three years. Casey's 11 councillors claimed expenses for overseas trips, car travel, mobile phone, laptop and internet use, as well as education and training costs in the year to July, the 2018-19 Casey annual report has revealed - with the total up $50,396 from 2015-16. The costs has been slammed by Ratepayers Victoria as "irresponsible spending." "There's little or no accountable how our money is being spent. We've had enough of it," Ratepayers Victoria vice-president Frank Sullivan said. Mayor Amanda Stapledon had the most expenses of any councillor - $50,154, including $14,096 for travel costs and $17,895 in carer expenses for her son Pete who has a disability. Next was Cr Sam Aziz with $29,315 in total expenses, including $17,848 for travel. Claiming the least was Cr Milla Gillic who spent $590. In a statement, Cr Stapledon said expenses reported in the annual report were compliant with councils adopted Councillors Reimbursement of Expenses Policy. Councillor Rex Flannery said he would be challenging $2,284 in total expenses contending he doesn't "waste a penny except for my phone bill". He also wanted to see "proof in the pudding" with council overseas trips, after ratepayers paid $70,000 for councillors and council officers to visit China on two separate trips this year - which council argues was about "forming relationships and identifying opportunities to create trade, economic development and arts and cultural benefits for our region". But Cr Flannery said: "The money we've spent overseas could've been invested into employing people or helping businesses to employ more people".

The mayor also received an annual allowance of $107,819 pro-rata while councillors got allowances of $33,535.

Jail time for baby killer A man found guilty of shaking his then-partner's baby in Cranbourne West, causing the child's death, has been sentenced to eight and a half years in prison. Jesse Vinaccia, who was 22 at the time of the offence, was sentenced in the Supreme Court on Monday 14 October, more than three years after the child's death. In his sentencing remarks, Justice Michael Croucher noted Vinaccia's extensive admissions to police and the remorse he had expressed, including a suicide attempt following the baby's death, despite entering a not-guilty plea. Justice Croucher also noted Vinaccia's "good prospects of rehabilitation". The court found that on the evening of 23 January 2016, Kaleb Baylis-Clarke was found unresponsive in his cot by Vinaccia, who had been caring for him while his mother, Erin Baylis-Clarke was at work. Vinaccia was in a relationship with Ms Baylis-Clarke at the time and lived with them in Cranbourne West. The infant was rushed to the Monash Medical Centre and placed on life support. While he had no external injuries, he did have serious brain injuries and bleeding in both retinas which examiners concluded had been caused by violent shaking. Vinaccia later admitted to police that he had "grabbed [Kaleb] off ... his [mat] with a bit of force"; that he may have "shaken [Kaleb] with ... quite significant force"; that he put him down in his cot "pretty rough"; and that he was "frustrated" at the time after a conversation with Kaleb's father. Kaleb died on 30 January 2016 after his life support was switched off. Vinaccia was found guilty of child homicide in June this year. Vinaccia must serve at five and a half years before being eligible for parole.

Man charged following sexual assault Police have charged a man with sexual assault of a 22-year-old Hampton Park woman which allegedly occurred in Dandenong on Tuesday 15 October. The 21-year-old Chadstone man was charged with sexual assault, assault with intent to commit a sexual assault, sexual activity directed at another person, sexual exposure and commit indictable offence while on bail in relation to an alleged sexual assault in a Cleeland Street carpark about 1.20pm. However, Dandenong Sexual Offences and Child Abuse Investigation Team detectives are appealing for witnesses or footage following the incident. The 22-year-old Hampton Park woman was not physically injured during the incident. The Chadstone man will appear before the Melbourne Magistrates' Court on 25 October. Detectives are urging anyone who may have been in the carpark at the time, or driving in the area with dashcam footage, to come forward. What made you decide to start your charity Clean as Casper in offering free showers to the community? Around five years ago, I set up a charity called Orange sky laundry in the south east (a mobile laundry service for the homeless). I met a homeless gentlemen named Casper who revealed to me one night that he had not showered for 6-7 years. He had purchased internet security for me after over hearing me saying I needed it. As I was not allowed to accept any gifts, I bartered with him and in exchange, I promised to build him a mobile shower- and so the journey began. What days/times does the mobile truck operate? Lucky number $666,666 By Mitchell Clarke A Berwick man has woken up to a real life dream, pocketing $666,666 after scoring division one in Tattslotto. The thrilled winner held one of six division one wins nationally in Monday and Wednesday's Lotto draw 3914 which was drawn on Monday 21 October. Wishing to remain anonymous, the man admitted he was initially sceptical when he woke to the remarkable news.

"I woke up to a few missed calls and an email telling me to check my ticket," he said. "I had no idea what was going on as I thought it must be spam or some other bulls***. "I checked my account and saw that I had won and all I could think was 'what the hell!'". The man explained he played the same numbers every week, admitting he's been playing QuickPick for years. "It's only a small four-game entry, so I've got it on a subscription for every week, so I

know I'll always have my numbers in. "I never expected I'd win division one!" The money comes at a particularly crucial time, with the winner claiming he really needed it after a few rough weeks. "This windfall takes the pressure off us for sure," he said. "It's been a tough few weeks I've got to say so this has come at a really good time." While a holiday is already planned, he's keen to upgrade and enjoy himself that little bit more.

"We already have a little getaway planned in the next couple of weeks, so I think we'll be celebrating then," he said. "We'll be able to go away on our break and splurge a bit. Multiple arrests as police crack down on youth crime By Brendan Rees An 18-year-old Cranbourne West man was arrested in relation to a robbery in Carnegie and related deceptions offences. The man was arrested on Monday 21 October in relation to a robbery that occurred on Rosstown Road in Carnegie on 8 October. Police have charged the man with deception offences and was bailed to appear at Moorabbin Magistrate's Court on 20 November. Investigations into the robbery are ongoing. A 16-year-old Pakenham boy was also arrested in relation to a robbery on Rosstown Road, Carnegie on 8 October and related deceptions offences. He will appear at a Children's Court later this week. Police have arrested 57 people over the past three days as part of Operation Liege to crack down on youth offending across the state. Fifty-seven people were arrested and multiple charges have been laid for offences including carjacking, aggravated burglary, robbery and vehicle crime linked to serious offending. In case you didn't notice, last week was AntiPoverty Week and Casey council did absolutely nothing about it - even though no community, especially in the south- eastern suburbs, is free from poverty. According to the Victorian Council Of Social Research ( VCOSS ) there is not one community that has not been impacted by poverty today. Moreover, under the spatial-modelling used by VCOSS the common face of poverty is now found in the south-eastern suburbs with many families struggling to get by. Often people living in poverty are under-24 years of age with more than one in every six children in Victoria living in poverty. Further, more than a quarter of adults living in poverty have a job. Low incomes and public policy are driving people into poverty in the south-eastern suburbs. In my view, councils really need to take a stand against the lack of affordable housing, advocate for more training and education opportunities, and categorically reject Federal government austerity policies. Most of all, local government can help make a difference because it has the capacity to actually reduce some of the cost of living pressures impacting on many local residents. Recently Casey council has refused an opportunity to support a national campaign to increase Youth Allowance and New Start assistance for all unemployed people. CCTV push A Cranbourne mother whose teenage daughter was attacked at a bus stop has started a petition calling for authorities to install CCTV cameras. April Pearce said her 13-year-old daughter had been left traumatised school after a group of girls punched her to the back of her head on Lyall Street on Wednesday 16 October. She said her daughter had just got off the school bus about 3.30pm when she was set upon by the thugs, described of African appearance. Her 15-year-old brother and his friends tried to barricade the bus door in an attempt to stop her attackers from entering the bus. She managed to escape and call her mum, who then picked her up nearby and called police. "She was very intimidated ... she doesn't want to go to school," Ms Pearce said. "I stood up to them a couple of times and said 'Why are you doing this to my daughter?" she said. "They said 'Oh she's done nothing, we just hate her and we hate you'. "I've even approached the girl who started it - her mum twice in the last two years so that girl had actually stopped" but added the others had "kept going". She said the girls had also pushed her and threatened to slice her throat and "get bikies after me". The girls in the past have tried to steal her daughter's jacket and phone in the past, she said, adding there had been about 20 attacks at the bus stop in the past two weeks. "Every day my children come home and tell me about people trying to roll other children for their shoes," she said. A change.org petition calling for CCTV cameras on Lyall Street has garnered more than 700 signatures to stop the violence. Casey manager of safer communities Caroline Bell said council was reviewing the CCTV within the municipality and "we're in the pro-

cess of developing a policy management plan on the use and placement of CCTV cameras in public spaces." "Lyall Street in Cranbourne and surrounds will be considered as part of this process. In the interim, Victoria Police and Council will conduct a safety audit in Lyall Street, Cranbourne near the bus interchange," she said. Casey local area commander Inspector Donald Brown said police had gathered witnessed statements in relation to the assault and had also received further reports of public order issues on Lyall Street."Investigations are ongoing into this matter," he said, adding "Cranbourne police have increased their patrols of the area and will continue to task their resources to where they're needed most." "Police will continue to target those committing offences and are working hard to hold them to account."

Mayor Amanda Stapledon will finish up her term as mayor at the end of October. Among those to pay tribute the outgoing mayor was Casey chief executive officer, Glenn Patterson, who said Cr Stapledon would leave behind a "really impressive legacy" and "was a fantastic ambassador for the City of Casey" and thanked her for her "tireless effort" over the past 12 months. "I've worked with about 22 mayors over my career in the role as a CEO over many years and without doubt councillor Amanda is the most committed, the most energetic, and the most passionate of any of those ... no doubt about that," he said. Casey's mayoral race is underway with councillor Rosalie Crestani officially announcing she was putting her hand up for the top job. With the next mayor to be decided on 29 October, Four Oaks Ward Cr Crestani said she would be honoured to take over the reins with a pledge to provide a "peaceful and united city with purpose, safety and security." At this stage no other mayoral contenders have publicly thrown their hat in the ring. Current mayor Amanda Stapledon has not indicated whether she will run again as mayor.Cr Crestani, who was currently serving as deputy mayor, said her "greatest driver" to become the next mayor was to address social issues in the community including mental health, drug and alcohol addictions, family violence, and unemployment. "I hope I can continue working in these areas to ultimately see our community set free from constraints and assist them in walking out their purpose for long term fulfilment," she said. Long-time councillor and former mayor Wayne Smith has ruled himself out, while former Cranbourne MP Cr Gary Rowe said he wouldn't contend due to his busy schedule. "It's something I would love to do but you've got to be realistic in these things," Cr Rowe said. "I think Susan Serey might get up," he said, adding if she was to be voted in he would "probably" put his hand up as deputy mayor. Mayor Amanda Stapledon chaired her final council meeting on 15 October after 12 months at the helm. In her final speech, Cr Stapledon told fellow councillors as well as council staff and the public gallery that she was proud to serve as mayor and felt "a great sense of achievement and gratitude". "This year has been sensational - there is no other way that I can describe it," the two-time mayor said.

However Mrs O'Toole, of Lyndhurst, was attacked by the armed assailant who pushed her into a glass cabinet and stabbed her several times. "He was screaming like a lunatic," she recalled. During the attack Mr O'Toole, who suffered from Parkinson's Disease, came out from the workshop to defend his wife and began wrestling with the assailant. "We were just trying to fight him off ... Dermot was desperately trying to save me." "Dermot fell over, he tripped over and he turned on him and stabbed him to death," she said. Mrs O'Toole attempted to pull the offender away from her husband and in doing so she was

further assaulted. The assailant then ran out of the shop. Mr O'Toole, 64, was fatally wounded and tragically died at the scene. Mrs O'Toole was taken to hospital where she had to undergo plastic surgery for the extensive serious stab and slash wounds and the glass shards that were embedded in her back. For her actions, Mrs O'Toole was awarded the 2018 Gold Clarke Medal during a presentation at the Melbourne Town Hall on Thursday 23 August. "It was a beautiful day," says Mrs O'Toole. "I was totally humbled and to be deemed worthy of such a prestigious award I couldn't believe it." The medal is an award of The Royal Humane Society of Australasia and is the Society's highest award for the most outstanding case of bravery. Mr O'Toole was posthumously awarded the Star of Courage in 2017 - Australia's highest bravery accolades which recognises "acts of conspicuous courage in circumstances of great peril". The robber, Gavin Perry, 27, was high after taking ice and on parole at the time of the murder. He was jailed for 27 years in 2014 for the crime. Mrs O'Toole remembers her husband of 41 years as a wonderful man who was a funny, kind and loyal man."I had the best husband and we had a great life together," she said. "Life has just been horrible since."

Childcare centre approved By Brendan Rees A childcare centre for 54 children will be built in Hampton Park, despite Casey Council rejecting the plans, the state's highest planning tribunal has ruled. The council rejected Winnima Realty Pty Ltd 's proposal for 9 Winnima Avenue on the grounds of location suitability, the impact on the character of the locality, and amenity impacts on neighbours. Two nearby residents also opposed the grant of a permit. The Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT) overturned the council's decision on 7 October, allowing the project to go ahead. VCAT member Michael Deidun said in his report the development was appropriate with the building design, setbacks, facade treat-

ment, building materials and colour scheme being "consistent with the surrounding residential environment." "I find that the proposal will not result in any unreasonable built form impacts on the surrounding properties, including by way of visual bulk, overlooking or overshadowing," the report said. He further stated the design of the building and acoustic fences will ensure that noises from the childcare centre "will be appropriately contained on-site, and limit the amenity impact on the adjoining residents." Mr Deidun stated a number of residents raised concerns about Winnema Avenue being used as a "shortcut" through the residential neighbourhood. But Mr Deidun believed the proposed

childcare centre would not result in "unreasonable traffic impact on the surrounding road environment" despite an additional 216 vehicle movements being added to the local road network. "As Winnima Avenue provides access to an arterial road to its north, and a collector road to its south, the traffic movements from this child care centre will be split between these two destinations. As such, no single point along Winnima Avenue will experience the additional 216 vehicle movements that will be generated from this proposed development," he stated. Mr Deidun dismissed suggestions it would be expected non-residential land uses located within a residential zone would "appear just the same as the nearby residential properties."

"Non-residential land uses have a particular form and function, often require additional car parking, and have other attributes or requirements that must be provided in a proposed design," he stated. Casey acting manager of statutory planning and building Services Nick Moore said council declined the application for the childcare centre as it failed to comply with the local policy of the Casey Planning Scheme. "Some of the main concerns raised by council included the site's location not being amongst other non-residential uses, its potential to detract from the neighbourhood character, and the potential to cause adverse amenity impacts to the surrounding residents," he said. The proposed hours of operation will be restricted from 6.30am to 7pm on weekdays.

CFA’s snags and fun galore By Brendan Rees Narre Warren North fire brigade threw its doors open to public ahead of the summer fire season. There was plenty for families to do during the open day held on Saturday 19 October. The day attracted more than a thousand people which included live demonstrations of vehicle rescue, a barbecue, tours of the station, educational handouts, and a chance to check out the brigade's ultra-light tanker. There were also fire uniforms and helmets for children to wear, and a chance to sit in the driver's seat of a fire truck. The brigade's communications officer Aaron Tams said the open day helped build community relationships and awareness of what the fire brigade did. "The brigades and other services put on sev-

eral demonstrations such as gas flare-off, casualty removal, thermal imaging in smoke filled structures, hazmat awareness and draughting water from static supplies," he said. "We really enjoy being able to put on these events for the community. After all we are there for them," he said. "The kids and the 'big kids' really enjoyed the different activities available to them like the Little Pat fire truck and getting to wear their own structure gear, using the brand new ultralight tanker to put out simulation spot fires." The brigade thanked Narre Warren SES, Victoria Police, Hallam fire brigade, Upwey fire brigade, Officer fire brigade, Rapid Relief Team, Kennards Hire Narre Warren, Narre Warren Baptist Church, Ambulance Victoria, Rob's Amusements and all brigade members for making the day possible.

Safety push over trucks By Brendan Rees A Cranbourne resident of 35 years says the number of trucks driving straight through Cranbourne is a disaster waiting to happen. David Atkins said trucks weaving their way through streets were creating a headache for everyone, and he could not fathom why a bypass wasn't in place. "We thought it might've happened in the 90s but never did happen," he said. "For traffic heading southward toward Cranbourne there was an uncertain proposal to have Thompsons Road and the Clyde Road toward Five Ways as the preferred route as well - of course this never happened. "They need a big 5000 litre BP truck to jackknife in the centre of that town and wipe out a lot of people ... then those idiots will sit up and take notice," Mr Atkins said. "It's been 12 to 15 years since VicRoads let any trucks got through Sunbury ... you won't see any heavy trucks roll through Lilydale ei-

"Cranbourne is in a time warp and treated as such in so many ways," he added. The Department of Transport spokesperson said there were no current plans for a bypass

route for heavy trucks around Cranbourne, adding their Transport Safety Services team "regularly patrolled" the Cranbourne area to monitor and improve the safety of heavy vehicles, as well as "ensuring a safe environment for local residents while ensuring those who rely on heavy vehicles are able to go about their business effectively and efficiently". The State Government announced last year the Narre Warren-Cranbourne Road Upgrade, expected to start in mid-2020, would improve access around the Cranbourne town centre and reduce traffic on the South Gippsland Highway and High Street. The project, due to be finish by the end of 2025, will see a four-kilometre stretch of Narre Warren-Cranbourne Road duplicated between Thompsons Road and the South Gippsland Highway in both directions, and cut congestion for more than 33,000 vehicles which use this road daily. Casey mayor Amanda Stapledon said council believed traffic using High Street (South

Gippsland Highway) should be managed, respecting the role of the Cranbourne Town Centre as a thriving hub in Casey. Casey council has welcomed a range of transport upgrades announced by the State Government, including the Thompson's Road duplication, Narre Warren - Cranbourne Road duplication, and Koo Wee Rup Road duplication and Monash Freeway Upgrades, which will all provide alternative routes for regional and truck traffic around the Cranbourne Town Centre. Love of gardening raises money for a worthy cause By Brendan Rees Geoff and Helen Cousins of Cranbourne have used their stunning garden to help raise $510.00 to help sick children. The couple opened their amazing Earlston Circuit garden to raise much-needed funds for Casey Hospital's children's ward. Their one and ¾ acres garden attracted about 60 to 80 people on Saturday 19 October - with one couple travelling as far as Euroa and another from St Kilda Road, Melbourne. Guests were treated to a great selection of plants on sale, and raffle prizes donated by Tri-

os, Amstel Golf Club, Kellys' Hotel and Cranbourne RSL plus many other prizes donated. The majority of Geoff and Helen's garden features native plants and a central pond with "many unique plants and artistic features." "The garden was started back in 2010 and is an ongoing project, which we thoroughly enjoy amercing ourselves in. We love to see all the changes in the plants during each season and are constantly amazed at nature's beauty," the couple said. Baked slices and cupcakes as well as tea and coffee were also on offer on the day."The food was very popular as many guests went back for a second helping," the couple said.

Casey rescue cat brings untold comfort to family

UFO landing to celebrate By Brendan Rees It's the mysterious landmark that quickly fuelled rumours of alien visitors. The giant crop circle which had been etched into the grass of Kurll Park in Narre Warren North had heads turning on Friday morning, 18 October. While it sent the minds of UFO hopefuls racing, the rumours were quickly quashed when it was revealed the crop circle was the work of a birthday stunt. Owen Watson, who lives adjacent to the park, said his prankster daughter was behind the act as she wanted to surprise him for his 50th birthday. "I've never had a crop circle before, that's pretty cool," he said, admitting he was known as an "alien enthusiast". After his daughter knocked on his bedroom door to say happy birthday, he also found a "card with a tin foil hat on the floor that I had to wear." She told him to look through his telescope

when he says he discovered the mysterious circles and patterns. He said his 18-year-old daughter spent about five hours in the torrential rain with friends creating the piece. "It's every bit of half a football field," he said. "She should be studying for her VCE instead she's making crop circles," he laughs. "It's a great gift so I'll get out there and get some photos," Mr Owen added. He said the crop circle was closely kept under wraps by his family. "My wife took me out to the movies yesterday (Thursday) from about 3.30 and then out to dinner," he explained. "I could tell something was going on because I wasn't allowed back, I wasn't even allowed out to drive down certain roads. "I thought that they were decorating the house or something. I had no idea." "It's a bit of a joke in the house ... I'm always out on the balcony looking at night seeing what I can find," he says of his telescope.

Art is at their fingertips By Danielle Kutchel A new gallery exhibition at Bunjil Place is promising to be the most accessible yet, thanks to an Auslan video label pilot. Auslan (Australian Sign Language) video labels have been loaded onto two iPads, which are available by request at the Bunjil Place Gallery front desk to accompany members of the Auslan community as they visit the David Griggs: Between Nature and Sin exhibition. The pilot is aimed at deaf or hard of hearing people who use Auslan, parents and children of deaf people, Auslan students and interpreters. Arts access/inclusion officer at Bunjil Place, Jessica Moody, said while Auslan tours are not new within the gallery sector, they often involve a tour guide who is well versed in the exhibition and who can take a tour group around it. The downfalls of this approach include the tours being bound to one day or time, and an inability to stop at every piece in the exhibition. Ms Moody was keen to encourage the agency of individual visitors, and with Auslan video labels, visitors can visit at any time during opening hours and navigate the gallery. There are twelve videos loaded onto each iPad which correspond with the labels inside the gallery. Users can select the thumbnail corresponding to the title of the artwork they are looking at to view the Auslan video. Each video features a deaf artist who has translated the English artwork labels into Auslan. The videos are captioned in English and can be watched in any order. "At Bunjil Place, we welcome all. Three-year-old Connor wouldn't know life without his pet kitten, Puss-Puss. Connor had a rough start to life, with more health issues, specialist appointments and hospital admissions then a boy of his age should have to go through. To lift his spirits his parents decided to find him a furry friend to bond with during the tough days. They began looking around at local rescue organisations, when tragedy struck their family. Their youngest son, Albie, was stillborn on 26 November 2018. "We put our search on hold as my family and I navigated through this devastating, griefstricken journey," mum Mikaela says. Several months later, they resumed our search and came across Second Chance Cat Rescue in Cranbourne South. "They were nothing short of amazing, and suggested Renate, an older kitten, as a good fit for our family," From the moment Connor met Renate, the family of Maroopna knew "she was the one for us" and could provide her with a loving home and family. Connor, who renamed her Puss-Puss, does "everything together" and given "so much love and helped ease the anxiety" for the family since losing Albie. GP Run ready to roar! The blast of motorcycle engines and a sea of colour and chrome will engulf High Street in Cranbourne this weekend when the Cranbourne GP Run returns to our streets! Thousands of motorcyclists will descend on High Street on Saturday 26 October in a huge street party, to depart en-mass for the Phillip Island Grand Prix. Any rider can take part and no registration is required. Motorcycles can start lining up on High Street from 7.30 am. Ebony Portelli will sing the national anthem this year. Ms Portelli was the winner of Star Search for a Cause and Casey's Got Talent 2018. For the first time this year, a lucky member of the public has been chosen to go up in the cherry picker with the City of Casey mayor to help wave off the riders. That special person is Vanessa Ferriman who was the winner of a Facebook competition to determine the waver. Dig deep for GP charity By Danielle Kutchel The Casey Cardinia Foundation has been named as the charity partner for this year's Cranbourne GP Run. The organisation is a philanthropic community foundation that raises funds for community groups throughout the City of Casey and Cardinia Shire, through the provision of a series of grants. These grants are awarded each year to notfor-profit charities and organisations that directly impact areas including disability, older persons, disadvantage, crisis and youth within the region. In the past, the grants have supported the vital work of groups like Turning Point Cranbourne, Outlook Victoria, Echo Emerald, Casey North Community Information and Support Service, Beaconsfield Officer Scout Group, Lakeside Pakenham Scout Group, Hillveiw Bunyip Aged Care, WAYSS, and many more. Money raised during the GP Run helps fund the foundation grants, according to executive officer Carlos Santin. "Any money raised goes into the program for next year. It's not so much what we'll do with it right now, but what it will actually fund," he said. Volunteers from across Casey and Cardinia mingle with the crowds at the GP Run, rattling tins and encouraging visitors to donate. Mr Santin said the Foundation has seen fantastic support from the public over the years, with groups who have previously received grants providing volunteers to the Foundation to help out on the big day. The Foundation has also experienced an increase in applications for grants, which Mr Santin says is evidence of greater support for what the Foundation does.

Sikh celebration for Guru By Brendan Rees The 550th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak, the founder of Sikhism was celebrated at Bunjil Place for the first time. Organised by Sikh Volunteers Australia, the ceremony attracted hundreds of people who gathered for a seminar themed 'Share and Care' where various community groups were awarded in recognition of their service in cooperation, multiculturalism and support for people in need. The event was attended by MPs, Casey councillors, council staff and representatives of south east organisations. Guest speakers included Tim Costello, the Australian Baptist Minister and current chief advocate of World Vision Australia; Philip Rosie of Victoria Council of Churches, and Jasbir Singh Suropada of the Sikh Interfaith Council of Victoria. A big-hearted group of Sikh Volunteers also provided free vegetarian food on the day. In her speech, Casey mayor Amanda Stapledon said council was "incredibly proud" so many people call City of Casey their home. "We love our Sikh Community and are so grateful for our Sikh Volunteers. We know how important this special event is and that is why raised the 550th anniversary in council to light up Bunjil Place on the 12th of November; an event that we invite the whole community to," she said. "Council is proud and will continue to work alongside the many diverse community groups and members to create an environment that fosters respect, inclusion and collaboration." Siblings set for whirlwind experience By Brendan Rees What mighty siblings Viv and Joey lack in height, they more than make up for with their charisma and determination. Measuring four foot five inches, and five foot two inches respectively, the pair are looking forward to racing around the globe when they compete for a cash prize of $250,000 in Channel Ten's The Amazing Race Australia. In a race where every second and every step counts, Viv, 25, of Cranbourne East and her brother Joey, 28, of Noble Park, say they will be "super reliant" on Google Maps for directions. And they are ready to deal with painfully slow taxi rides, furious camels,and kayaking despite Viv admitting she's not "particularly strong (psychically)." Often being made fun of growing up, they now embrace their size and see it as an advantage in the race. Together, they have travelled to the USA, Vietnam, Hong Kong and Macau. "Joey and I grew up watching the show together, and family and friends said that we'd be the funniest pair to watch," Viv says. Their parents migrated to Australia from Vietnam in the 1980s. Viv says having the opportunity to travel around the world was a chance to "live out our childhood dream of being on the race." But Joey says: Viv can sometimes be very stubborn and when disagreements arise, this makes it very hard to communicate with her. In situations like this, it's usually her way or the highway." When asked what his go-tip for getting through a long-haul flight, Joey responds: "Make friends with the flight attendants so that they give you extra food and snacks!" Mum fined over theft By Cam Lucadou-Wells

Brother-sister Viv and Joey are ready to tackle The Amazing Race Australia.

A 48-year-old mum has been fined due to having only a minor part in shoplifting a trampoline from a Kmart store just before last Christmas. She directed a triumphant 'Ha!' towards the Star News reporter as she left Dandenong Magistrates' Court on 22 October. As had been previously reported, the accused was with her two primary-school aged sons and an unknown male when she paid for bedding and a shirt at the self-serve pay terminal at Kmart in Fountain Gate on 22 December. At the same time, the trampoline in two boxes was loaded on a trolley and wheeled out of the store without payment by the unknown male, police told Dandenong Magistrates' Court. Defence lawyer Bernard Keating argued that the accused had assumed that the unknown male had paid for "his" trampoline. The trampoline was later recovered in the shopping centre's car park. Police dropped charges that the woman had threatened to kill and attempted to strike an intervening customer who had followed them out of the store. On 22 October, magistrate Pauline Spencer said another person was "predominantly involved" in the theft. The woman was fined $500, plus $300 for a careless driving charge. On 20 November, she will contest a charge of refusing a drug-driver test, which carried a mandatory four-year driving disqualification. A preliminary test indicated drugs in her system, but she allegedly refused to submit to follow-up tests, the court heard. cranbournenews.starcommunity.com.au

Hay fire heroics By Jed Lanyon A Lyndhurst truck driver has recounted the moment he helped his mate just seconds before his truck carrying hay bales burst into flames in Healesville. Fred Reid had just finished delivering a load in Healesville when he got the call for help from David Ayres on his CB radio. Mr Ayres had been driving his Kenworth truck, transporting two trailers loaded with hay along the Maroondah Highway when he thought he may have a flat tyre about 7.30am on 20 September. He pulled into a BP and put the callout for help on his radio for anyone in the area. "He called up and asked if I could sneak around him to see what the trouble was," Mr Reid recalled. Mr Reid said Mr Ayres was in "all sorts of bother" with smoke coming out the middle of the B-double. "Being a load of hay, in town and next to a petrol station, I suggested let's get it out of town before you lose the whole truck," Mr Reid said. Mr Ayres then drove the truck about 1.5 km out of Healesville, just past Healesville-Koo Wee Rup Road where he and Mr Reid separated the two trailers and his prime mover to prevent the fire from spreading. "Literally seconds after we got the prime mover out from under the trailer, it just burst into flames," Mr Reid said. "We were standing probably 30 metres away and the heat was burning us; that's how hot it was." Without his assistance, Mr Reid believes Mr Ayres may have been left in a situation where his truck would have ignited in town, leaving him with no choice but to run for his own safety. "Poor fella, I wouldn't wish it on anyone what happened to him. "He's a good young kid, he was pretty

"Afterwards he told me, 'I couldn't have done it without you, I owe you a beer'. "Things could have been a lot worse and we were very lucky to have the outcome we had." Senior Constable Tom Juric of the Yarra Ranges Highway Patrol praised the actions of

the quick-thinking drivers. He said the fire was caused from friction through an upturned mudflap against the truck's tyres. The incident caused the Maroondah Highway to be blocked for several hours with fire crews on scene for five hours. A front end loader from VicRoads was also needed to push the hay off the trailers.

A mobile shower charity truck providing free showers to the disadvantaged and people experiencing homelessness in the south east has had an upgrade. After working out of a trailer, Clean as Casper founder Steve Winterton said getting their truck on the road was a "huge relief" after winning a $20,149 in the State Government's Pick My Project initiative. "It's quadrupled the amount of people using our shower already," he said. He said the truck was purchased two years ago but they didn't have the funds to fit it out. "It's really saved us ... the name will get out there and people can help us more." The truck now has one shower, a washing machine, a dryer and cabinetry.Narre Warren South MP Gary Maas said project such as the mobile shower for the homeless displayed "the power of community engagement as we seek to help those in our area who need it most," adding it would "offer more privacy, more locations, and greater support." Mr Winterton said it wasn't just about people having a shower but also gathering for a friendly chat. They currently services Cranbourne, Narre Warren, Pakenham, Dandenong, Chelsea, and Frankston. "It's really good, the more people hear about it - the more they're coming in and using it," Mr Winterton added. In 2018, the Pick My Project initiative saw the southern metropolitan region received more than $3.64 million in funding, with over 37,000 votes being cast for local projects.

Ladies’ crafty showcase By Brendan Rees Artists of the Country Women's Association Inc. West Gippsland Group showcased their creativity at their recent Creative Arts Expo in Cranbourne. Cranbourne Public Hall was filled with inspiring works from photography to embroidery, patchwork, craft, canvas work, confectionery, cut flowers and more on 18-19 October. Nearly a thousand exhibits showcasing and celebrating the artistic works of members. There were also live demonstrations including a bobbin lace making workshop, spinning yarn for pets, and a gold-work embroidery workshop, and sharpening of knives and scissors by 'The Knife Man' Julian Pfitzner. Pop-up shops at the show included Sewing Connection of Pakenham, and Andrea Roberts' Handmade Cards. West Gippsland Group President Ann Laws said the annual show was a great success. "Members enjoyed chatting with visitors over a cuppa and finding out their interests. We hope that by seeing our many varied crafts it will encourage them to try something new," she said. Other exhibits featured on the day were knitting, crochet, needlework, beading, artwork, card making, jams and preserves, baked goods, floral arrangements, as well as children and family member sections.

The Lexus Melbourne Cup holds historical, cultural and social significance and is held annually on the first Tuesday of November at 3.00pm when it brings Australia to a standstill and is watched by more than 750 million people across the globe. This year marks the 17-year anniversary of the Lexus Melbourne Cup Tour, which has seen the coveted trophy travel over 600,000 kilometres and visit more than 450 towns and cities across Australia, New Zealand and the world, allowing local communities to experience the magic of the 'Loving Cup' first-hand. Former Australian netball champion and 'The Block' contestant Bianca Chatfield made a special appearance at Lexus of Berwick on Clyde Road in celebration of the 'People's Cup'. Jordy is making a genuine difference, one run at a time By Nick Creely Jordan Wyatt is doing everything he can to make a difference. One run at a time. And not just to help his side win games of cricket on the weekends, but more importantly, to help overcome the stigma related to mental health. The Casey-South Melbourne batsman is donating $1 per run he scores this Victorian Premier Cricket season to Mindfull Aus, an organisation founded by Matt Runnalls aimed at encouraging those to come out of the shadows of stigma through self-acceptance and a greater education of mental health issues. For Wyatt, it’s all about creating awareness of mental health issues, and encouraging those suffering to speak up, and not suffer in silence. But on a personal level, the cause and everything it stands for and aims to achieve is dear to his heart after suffering from mental health issues, particularly anxiety in his teenage years. “I’ve previously had issues with mental health, and I know how hard it is to speak up, but once you do, it does get a lot easier, and I want to promote that positivity around it, and try and get rid of that negative stigma surrounding mental health issues,” he said. “So I’m looking for it as an opportunity to create a bit of awareness again. 28 STAR NEWS

“That’s why $1 per run is going straight to Mindfull and the work they do with especially young men, and not just the 18 to 40 bracket, it’s even younger now which is concerning.” Wyatt said that the first step to overcoming any debilitating mental health issue is being honest with yourself, and taking that plunge into self-acceptance and starting a conversation with someone that is close, and can be trusted. He firmly believes that it’s helped him get on top of his issues in the past, and managing it further into the future. “The biggest battle that anyone with mental health issues faces is owning up to it, and admitting there is even an issue there,” he said. “The thing is, once you do address it, get help and have people on your side and in your corner, they’re able to support you through it. “If you’re suffering in silence, people around you might not know you’re struggling, and therefore might not be able to assist you. “It’s hard; it’s a really challenging thing to be able to speak up. You get quite emotional thinking about it.” Wyatt said that the work Runnalls is doing with Mindfull Aus has inspired him to make a difference and encourage people to access the incredible mental health services available, and to do what he can to ensure people understand that it’s okay to not be okay.

“I’m friends with Matt Runnalls, the founder of Mindfull, and I’ve known him for quite a long time, and knowing him on a personal level is really important I think,” he said. “When I was at school, there definitely wasn’t as much accessibility to councillors and psychologists and all of the access we now have, and working in a school I’m able to witness that, and it gives me a broader understanding of it also. I definitely think it’s (removing the stigma) come a long way, and on the improve. “In my case, I want to be seen as a bit of a role model for young guys coming through the ranks, to be there for those that are struggling and need to talk to someone, and if they can see I’m raising awareness and funds for this organisation and this company, that they might see that and go ‘alright, there’s someone I have common interest with or whatever, and I can speak to that person’. “I feel as though that can hopefully help people speak up about the issues they’re facing, because I know that is 100 per cent the hardest thing to do. “I’ve had a lot of people around school, and my cricket club band together and support the cause - people have been nothing but supportive to me. “People do understand how much of a difficult time it is for young people that are going through these issues, and that stigma is slowly dying.”

Wyatt will be hoping that runs are pinging off his Redback blade across the course of the season, with the Swans star sporting a Mindfull Aus sticker on the back of his bat, all with the hope that people simply ask questions and want to know how they can get involved. Panther champion Brett Forsyth and Comrey Edgeworth nudged the ball around superbly, with the pair getting the visitors to 0/28 off the first 10 overs, before going at three overs over for the next hour to perfectly set the game up at 0/80 at drinks. With the pair set, and with plenty of hungry batsmen waiting in the sheds, the Swans needed a spark, and it came through skipper Luke Wells (1/22), who forced a false shot from Edgeworth (46) to snare the opening wicket. Forsyth quickly nudged past another first XI half century (his 38th), with the Panthers seemingly cruising at 1/115 and with only around a run-a-ball needed. All-rounder Dylan Hadfield (1/35) got another fire started by trapping Cam Forsyth LBW, with the Swans starting to take some control after a pressure-filled period of bowling. Jackson Fry (2/36) managed to snare two vital scalps - that of Forsyth for a brilliant 76, as well as the dangerous Lincoln Edwards for 11 - firmly putting the game in the Swans' grasp. Round 3 of the Casey Softball Association was played on a particularly cool and showery day. Softball, unlike some other sports, will play in most conditions. Other than heavy rain, or extreme heat, games will go ahead. First up was the Mixed Under-15 competition. Berwick beat Doveton in a nailbiter 1211, and Cobras Grey played Cobras Maroon with Cobras Grey victorious 16-8. The Mixed Under-13s saw the newcomers to the competition, Royal Falcons, go down to Cobras 7-1, and Berwick and Doveton played out a thrilling 7-7 draw. The Social Ladies start at 12.30, with the Cranbourne Comets defeating Berwick Chickasaw 11-9 in a close one; Berwick Geronimo proving too strong for the Chiefs, winning 181; MVP defeating Cobras 13-8; and Narre War-

Bucks in a strong position By Nick Creely DDCA TURF 1 AND 2 REVIEW - ROUND 2 (DAY ONE) Buckley Ridges are in pole position to push for a Turf 1 outright win when play resumes against North Dandenong on Saturday. And the dominance came through the Bucks' two overseas dynamos - skipper David White and West Indian Jerome Jones. Jones - a left arm tearaway - ripped through the Maroons after the Bucks sent the visitors in at Park Oval, snaring 5/45, backing up his impressive debut for the club in the opening round. The Maroons battled with the quick's pace and tight lines, and were rolled for just 100 despite a fighting 42 from keeper-batsman Shehan Fernando - who came in when the visitors were under the pump and managed to salvage something out of the innings. Daniel Watson (2/20) was also an absolute handful opening up with Jones, while spinner Wes Nicholas was impossible to get away, snaring 2/9 off 8.5 overs. The Bucks lost champion openers Daniel Watson and Paul Rudd early in their first innings, but managed to pull away through White, who carved a quick fire 58 before being dismissed, leaving his side 3/74 before rain took over for the rest of the day. A real mixed day for Narre Warren on the greens Bowls Victoria's Try Bowls promotion arrives at Narre Warren Bowls Club on Sunday, 27 October. The free day of barefoot bowling will start at 10 am and run until 2pm. Bowls and coaching will be provided free and there will also be a free sausage sizzle and soft drinks.
